— Ace "Reluctantly," you understand. As a last resort, you know.
This basic dynamic — Boehner cannot haggle freely with the president due to the intense opposition to a deal within his own ranks — has not fundamentally changed. What has changed is the president's hand. According to senior administration officials, Obama is not eager to go over the cliff, but he is willing. If no deal is reached by the end of the month, all the Bush tax cuts — for the rich and not-rich — will evaporate. Obama would then demand in early January that the new Congress immediately pass legislation to reinstate the lower tax rates for the bottom 98 percent.
Some in the liberal media are even willing to report that it's beginning to look like the Democrats are pretending to negotiate, while actually doing all they can to avoid a deal.
Over the last 96 hours, it’s become abundantly clear that any post-election momentum that was building for a deal to avert the fiscal cliff has abated and we are, in the words of House Speaker John Boehner, at a “stalemate”.The more intriguing — and harder to answer — question is whether deadlock is right where Democrats want things to be and whether the President’s party has any real interest in finding common ground before Dec. 31.
Republicans have whispered for weeks now that they believe Democrats and the White House want to go over the fiscal cliff and that the PresidentÂ’s initial offer late last week... is blunt evidence that the White House is interested in making it appear as though they are willing to deal without actually being willing to deal.
...
And even the Democratic strategist set insists that their side isn’t interested in taking the leap — although they quickly note that if that was to happen, the party would be in position to benefit politically.
“I don’t believe the Dems want to go over the fiscal cliff — don’t believe it at all,” said Democratic strategist Paul Begala. “But they are prepared for it, and are in a better position than the Republicans should it occur.”

But are they (the Democrats) really in a better position if we go off the cliff? I guess they think this is like the shutdown of the government in Clinton I when the Dems got a huge benefit and Gingrich and the Republicans came out with a black eye. But I am not so sure Obama will come off smelling as well as Clinton did. I just think Obama is more inept and ham handed than Clinton on these issues.
But I am probably wrong as usual.

And again, I just don't see why this is the worst thing in the world for the Republicans. (A) Policywise, its probably better than any stupid deal we would cut and (B) its 2 years until the next election. If the economy is in the tank and the government is gridlocked, I don't think Obama will be able to go the well again and have voters elect Democrats to a majority in the House.

"Meh. Everything's a breeze when you're a dictator and there is no one opposing you."
But he is not and he does have opposition.
FDR -- who was a far better politician than Obumbles -- ran into major political trouble with his court packing scheme even though he enjoyed larger majorities in both houses of Congress.
The voters just voted for Obama over Romney -- they did not vote for Democrats over Republicans. Obumbles is not self-aware enough to catch the distinction.
I think the Republican position should be that we will negotiate in good faith, but if the government is going to "raise more revenue" (i.e., tax more) there must be real, documented, meaningful and immediate controls put in place on government spending. The Dems of course will not accept that deal. But I would be happy to take that position to the voters.

And that'd be all well and good if this got us anywhere towards balancing the budget. IIRC, the spending reductions are the rough equivalent of our annual deficit spread over 10 years.
And the increased tax rates may just offset the spending cuts when economic chilling begins to happen. (Also and related: Laffer Curve.)

For children, how do we distinguish this? For adults, I would propose that they dig fucking ditches every day to keep getting these benefits.
Unable to feed yourself for 10 years??? This needs to be shut down immediately.
In 2010 we spent $57B on food stamps. I would cut that in half. Immediately. (within one year - i.e., by Jan. 2014). With a further goal to get this under $10B in the near term.
In 2010 we spent $41B in housing assistance. I would cut that in half. Immediately (within one year - i.e., by Jan. 2014). With the further goal to get this under $10B in the near term.

From ABC News and Weasel Zippers:
"Republicans are seriously considering a Doomsday Plan if fiscal cliff talks collapse entirely. ItÂ’s quite simple: House Republicans would allow a vote on extending the Bush middle class tax cuts (the bill passed in August by the Senate) and offer the President nothing more: no extension of the debt ceiling, nothing on unemployment, nothing on closing loopholes. Congress would recess for the holidays and the president would face a big battle early in the year over the debt ceiling."
I say...Yes!
No increase in the Debt Ceiling!
If Barky gets to keep borrowing money...then he can keep the good times rolling through the end of his term .
There would be no 'Let it Burn', if he gets an increase in the debt limit.

That might be the most effective form of "liberal bias" in political media.
Non-political media have taught us well, at least for the entire time I've been alive, that there's a Good Party and an Evil Party, so news that's presented in the least deceptive way political news ever is, where a story is told as a matter of partisan squabble/advantage/etc., is really a Good vs. Evil story.
If you read a story like that in isolation, it can pass as an objectively "negative" story about the Good Party.
But that's not the how it functions.

We need term limits, and we need to clean house. Want to run for an elected office?? Fine, you can only serve 2 terms. That could be 2 terms as senator, then 2 terms in another elected office up to and including dog catcher. After that, when you run out of 'titles' that appeal to you you get to go back into private life and reap what you've sown.

In reality, they don't want their crazy policies enacted in an immediate fashion. They don't want to OWN it.
So, threaten to make them own it and in a serious way. The fiscal cliff is one. The debt ceiling is another.

Sure, any state can leave. Its called a war for secession. See S. Ossetia and Chechnia for the most recent examples.
I tend to think that modern democracies lack the balls to wage full combat to keep states from breaking away. See Catalonia and Spain for that example.

I wish we would step of the fiscal bump, its the only thing that would ever make the WH negotiate, but we know what will happen. The GOP will crumble, there will be increases in taxes above 200k and spending will increase.
If this was not the case, when Obastard said no deal without tax rate increases, Boehner would have said no deal without true spending cuts.

I like to think about the positive side of our equation too though -- We produce more food than we can eat. We have energy resources to be self sustaining, though it will take a while to get back to 100% of what we use now. We have enough refineries and chemical plants to produce all the fertilizer and fuel we need. The skills of the populace will not be suddenly lost.
The physical plant of the US (homes, bridges, roads, water systems) will still be here, though ownership questions will be in the air. Our electronics will definitely suck for a while, since we no longer produce them except for CPUs.
I keep these things in mind as a sort of beacon that not all will be lost, no matter what dumbassery our current leaders have led us to.

The second one MAKES PERMANENT the "upper income" Bush tax rates, and includes the various 'revenue enhancements (phasing out of deductions for state and local taxes, ending the Hollywood tax breaks, etc.) necessary to avoid sequester.
Then let Harry Reid sort it out.

What say, we go over the cliff. Then, if things get really, really bad, like if foodstamps, welfare and even social security go away... Government employee unions go on strike and their 'brothers' in other unions around the nation join them in a 'show of solidarity.' Ports, railroads, trucking, shipping, (power stations?), grocery stores, warehouses...
Spreading social unrest, rioting and other societal dysfunctions will probably result...and say that it all gets really, really bad...
Martial law? Suspend The Constitution? President assumes 'emergency powers'?
Just as a possible worst case scenario...
The 'fiscal cliff' may have a much worse outcome than some might think...
