— DrewM "Civilian federal workers" is a euphemism for "Obama's base in Northern Virginia".
Here's the proposal.
The White House will propose a 0.5 percent pay increase for civilian federal employees as part of its 2013 budget proposal, according to two senior administration officials familiar with the plans. The modest cost of living increase in federal compensation would be the first pay jump for federal workers since before President Obama ordered a two-year freeze in late 2010.
The proposal, which requires congressional approval, differs from Republican plans supported by lawmakers and presidential candidates that would freeze federal compensation for at least one more year. In recent weeks, GOP lawmakers have called for extending the pay freeze as a way to pay for a payroll tax extension.
This needs congressional approval you say? I hope the GOP offers the following counter-proposal: 15% of you are fired.
Quality snark from "Political Math" on Twitter.
Pro tip: Don't announce raises for bureaucrats the day after you announce you're firing 10,000 soldiers.
Of course we can afford all of this now because unemployment is plummeted to 8.5% and happy days are here again according to the Associated Press.
(Sorry for the blatant link whoring to my little site but I thought someone else would have done a post on it here and I don't want to bother redoing the whole thing)

As they said during the California budget crisis -What do you call 200,000 layed-off state workers? A good start.
Trim the civilian federal work force by at least twenty percent overall and delete several entire departments (you know which ones) entirely.
Unfortunatly I believe it was Talleyrand who told another as they observed from a balcony overlooking a mass of bureaucrats working in a huge office, "You and I shall pass, but das bureaus? Das bureaus are eternal."

The untold story of the Obama Administration’s widely reported, $335 million discrimination settlement with Countrywide Financial Corporation is that, under a secret Justice Department program, a chunk of the money won’t go to the “victims” but rather leftist groups not connected to the lawsuit.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) will determine which “qualified
organizations” get leftover settlement cash and Democrat-tied groups
like the scandal-plagued Association of Community Organizations for
Reform Now (ACORN) and the open-borders National Council of La Raza
(NCLR) stand to get large sums based on the hastily arranged deal which
got court approval in just a few days.

14 As still shots of Obama in his bathing suit appeared on screen, (NBC's Brian) Williams announced: "The photos that come out today may make it tougher for men of a certain age who go to the beach for summer vacation this year because a lot of guys are now going to be expected to dive for every football that comes remotely close to them. This is the 50-year-old President of the United States on New Year's Day in what appears to be a hardcore beach football game."
... Today co-host Matt Lauer declared: "And fit to serve, Barack Obama photographed shirtless in Hawaii and a lot of women are giving him the presidential seal of approval."

It's about building and building a voter base. Responsibility for national defense as mandated by the Constitution, a document Obama has repeatedly shown nothing but contempt for, isn't as important as ensuring one's own power and position. Giving away security and world power status so the petulant boy king can continue to shit on his throne for 4 more years.

Part of the reason that he can get away with it is that people see police arresting bad guys, handing out tickets, or they can see firefighters battling a burning building or responding to an accident. No nation is marching troops down mainstreet, so the only contact that most people have with the job the military does is when they see the latest Afghanistan news on CNN.

It's not every year. There are 10 steps and step 1-4 occur yearly. After that they occur in 2-3 year increments, 5 through 7 happen every two years and and 8 through 10 happen every three years. To go from step 1 through step 10 requires 18 good years in service at that grade. Just want to make sure the facts are out there.

On Monday the wife and went for a ride on the Harley (with 2 US flags waving from the top of the tour pak). When we stopped at a beachside park, a gentleman looking like Santa Claus came running up and said he really likes it when people show the flag. He told us he was from Maine and lives on a boat. Then he asked; "Are you a progressive or a traditionalist?". Given how he lives, thought he might have been a progressive, but he is a diehard "traditionalist" and really hates where the US is headed. If Obama gets another term he's off to Latin America.
Posted by: Turd FergusonThe husband and I are planning to buy a home on wheels (trailer) and move to the wilds of Idaho or Northern Nevada. California is screwed. Even though I have a job and he is currently on funemployment California wants more from us. They are killing us financially and it's taking it's toll emotionally.

#143 Understand completely. Grew up in Northern California (timber country, not wine country) and life was outstanding up there. After the Spotted Owl fiasco, it's unemployment central. Lots of relatives still in California and between the high taxes and outrageous heating and cooling costs would love to leave. Unfortunately, most, if not all are stuck there.
Wish you the very best in your quest to leave the Commie Republic of California. Sounds like you have a plan!

Reminds me of that old joke about the two drunk guys at the bar. The punchline is "Block that kick! Block that kick!"

OK, that is my tacky comment for the week, for which I will no doubt be given penance.

Oh, and if it's not been said... federal employees aren't working with no pay raises for 2 years. Feds use a grade/step system. So if your job is whatever GS level you are, within that GS level there are steps. Basically, every year you go up one step, regardless of anything else. You can certainly max out your step, but chances are if you know how to game the system, you find a way to move up to the next GS level by that point. So everybody gets raises!
Oh, and then there's locality pay.....

Thanks for the clarification. Obviously I shouldn't have said everybody.

Sorry, G-Man, I can't get too worked up about it.
Within-grade increases average about 3 percent of an employeeÂ’s pay. They are eligible for them after one, two or three years at their current step, depending on their level.
So you're still getting 1-3% every year even with a "salary freeze."
I took a real salary freeze, got all future pension bennies eliminated, and my 401k chopped.
The private sector still lags far behind the public sector in pay and bennies.

Perhaps you mean a raise? Or is Obama really "working" for votes now?
