— andy With John Roberts' surprising decision last week, the fate of the country's healthcare system has been thrown back to the people, who have one last chance to kill Obamacare before it kills them by electing Mitt Romney President, electing a GOP majority to the Senate and holding the House in November.
Hyperbole? Maybe. But if the current state of the UK's NHS is any indication of where we're headed, and I think it is, the gravity of the situation facing us is pretty clear.
Avik Roy, the excellent healthcare blogger at Forbes, has a good piece over at NRO on the do-or-die nature of November's election and what conservatives must do to win the day. Short version: we need to remind our friends and neighbors why Obamacare is so bad, and fast:
... there is one aspect of Obamacare that, above all others, will matter to the broadest swath of American voters: the degree to which the law drives up the cost of health insurance. And this is the message that opponents of Obamacare must hammer home. When President Obama was campaigning in 2008, he repeatedly promised that Obamacare would reduce, on an absolute level, Americans’ health premiums. “We’ll start by lowering premiums by as much as $2,500 per family,” candidate Obama said in October of that year.
But the opposite has happened. In 2011, the average family health plan cost $15,073, a jump of $1,303 — 9.5 percent — from 2010, the year that the president signed Obamacare into law. Over the same period, median household income increased by only 4 percent, from $49,445 to $51,413. That means that, for the average family in 2011, health premiums amounted to a staggering 29 percent of household income.
Read the whole thing, and we'll have much, much more on this topic over the coming weeks here at the HQ. But let me remind you what Obamacare's architects view as the end-state of their grand plans ...

In a six-page letter to FactCheck.org, deputy Obama campaign manager Stephanie Cutter disputes the notion that Romney cannot be held accountable for outsourcing by Bain Capital-owned companies after February 1999, when he stepped down as CEO.
“The statement that Gov. Romney ‘left’ Bain in February 1999 — a statement central to your fact-check — is not accurate,” Cutter writes. “Romney took an informal leave of absence but remained in full legal control of Bain and continued to be paid by Bain as such. Governor Romney would have the period of Bain service understood differently, for the obvious reason that there is much in this l999-2002 period that he would prefer to avoid accountability for.”
Cutter cites statements by Romney, his wife Ann, lawyer Bradley Malt, and filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission as evidence that he maintained significant managerial and financial ties with the company during the period when the outsourcings referenced in Obama TV ads occurred.

CMS estimates the growth in health insurance costs will increase 10 extra percentage points in 2014 because of ObamaCare — a 14% increase, versus 3.5% without the law.
In 2020, the net cost of health insurance is estimated to be $271 billion. Without ObamaCare, that number would have been $248.7 billion — a difference of more than $22 billionPosted by: Jay at July 02, 2012 05:40 AM (3LaGb)

Al QaedaÂ’s Yemen-based terror cell, the same organization behind the 2009 attempted underwear bombing and a similar terror plot uncovered by a CIA informant less than two months ago, is believed to be behind this latest planned attack, according to the Sunday Times of London.
The plan is not specifically targeted to the Olympics, intelligence officials told the paper, and instead should be seen as another attempt by al QaedaÂ’s Yemen affiliate to blow up a US plane.

Sixty of the guns and several BB guns were turned in by the Champaign-based Guns Save Life. In return, the group received $6,240 in gift cards, said John Boch, president of the group.
Guns Save Life is known for the pro-gun signs the group posts along Interstate 57 between Chicago and Champaign. It also publishes a monthly gun journal.
Most of the money will go toward buying ammunition for an NRA youth camp in Bloomington. The rest will pay for four bolt-action rifles that will be given away to campers.
“This was rusty, non-firing junk that we turned in,” Boch said. “We are redirecting funds from people who would work against the private ownership of firearms to help introduce the next generation to shooting safely and responsibly.”

Secondly, we'll be overrun with stories on how trying to repeal it will have serious political consequences, yea even historical ramifications, on an R who dares to pursue this divisive agenda. We'll get human interest stories stacked one on top of the other highlighting the virtue of the newly implemented FREE coverages and how turning back the law will be worse than any atrocities of WW2 Nazis.
And, finally, the fate of repeal will be with Lischea Murkelscruntski, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins in the Senate. Anyone want to bet on those three holding the line?

What the trader told us was that the bank could not be seen to be borrowing at high rates, so we were putting in low Libor submissions, the same as everyone. How could we do that? Easy. The British Bankers' Association, which compiled Libor, asked for a rate submission but there were no checks. The trader said there was a general acceptance that you lowered the price a few basis points each day.
According to the trader, "everyone knew" and "everyone was doing it". There was no implication of illegality. After all, there were 20 to 30 people in the room – from management to economists, structuring teams to salespeople – and more on the teleconference dial-in from across the country.
The discussion was so open the behaviour seemed above board. In no sense was this a clandestine gathering.

But after decades of work and billions of dollars spent, researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, say they aren't quite ready to say they've "discovered" the particle.
Instead, experts familiar with the research at CERN's vast complex on the Swiss-French border say that the massive data they have obtained will essentially show the footprint of the key particle known as the Higgs boson — all but proving it exists — but doesn't allow them to say it has actually been glimpsed.
It appears to be a fine distinction. Senior CERN scientists say that the two independent teams of physicists who plan to present their work at CERN's vast complex on the Swiss-French border on July 4 are about as close as you can get to a discovery without actually calling it one.
"I agree that any reasonable outside observer would say, 'It looks like a discovery,'" British theoretical physicist John Ellis, a professor at King's College London who has worked at CERN since the 1970s, told The Associated Press. "We've discovered something which is consistent with being a Higgs."

How about a Constitutional Amendment that limits the government? Here's my idea:
“No branch of Government may compel any Citizen to participate in Commerce, nor may any Citizen be penalized or taxed for choosing not to participate in Commerce.”
Keep it short and simple (something that can be written out 50 times with a quill and ink) and non-controversial. If you can do that, you should be able to get Congress to approve it and send it to the States.
It's closing the barn door after the horses have gotten out, but it should limit their ability to do this to us in the future.....

Then I was told what a brilliant game the Pubs were playing in keeping the Dems from passing it, except it kept moving forward somehow. Then as if by magic, Scott Brown was pulled from the
Republican ashes of MA to stop it.....except it didn't.
Nope, Pelosi got to wave around her massive hammer like she was Thor. So then I was engaged in replacing our Dem Blue Dog with an R, part of a wave of change in the House unseen in decades....and still it persists; hell, it ain't even been slowed down any.
So now we enter the final chance this November. The odds aren't good as we now need to win the Senate AND presidency AND nobody getting weak kneed afterwards too. Like Mr. Roberts.

If we are lucky the collapse of our system will be quick and bloodless.
Unfortunately, I think we'll only get to pick one of those, and if we pick "bloodless" the opposite of "quick" might not be "slow" but "never."
The country is currently made up of two fundamental views- those who view the government as a protector of private rights, and those who view the government as "The Great Equalizer." Those are not compatible in any way. Such views cannot live side-by-side for very long (in the scope of history- it may seem like forever for us).

All those "waivers" are Executive Branch powers. That means he could just issue a bunch of waivers to everyone under the sun.
That wouldn't actually "stop" or "repeal" Obamacare on day one, but it would give people some breathing space while they worked on getting a real repeal done.

Hi, all!
Okay, so here's the scenario I've been bopping around in my head. Is it finally at long last time to convene a Constitutional Convention to amend the Constitution with something akin to, "The federal government cannot tax, penalize or otherwise punish the people for failing to or choosing not to take part in economic activity." I know amendments are proposed all the time, and often they get shot down in the legislature. But it seems to me that there's enough unrest and disquiet in the country over this ObamaTax ruling that a Constitutional Convention through the STATES, rather than through Congress, might actually get somewhere.
The Roberts decision may have beneficial or detrimental political effects in the short term, but Constitutionally, it's a death blow. It needs to be rectified.

However the rationing of healthcare can be easily proven AND how that leads to the elderly being treated poorly or not at all.
We have plenty of factual incidents to show from the NHS in Britain.
Demonstrate that the cost per individual may seem low but the quality of care will disappear.
Use the DMV or Post Office argument. Most can relate better to that.
Let the big dogs make the cost arguments. Person to person should be about how poor and delayed care will be.
Ask 'em if they want to have some Doctor making decisions about whether their granny gets to live or die without family's input. That's what's coming.
Death panels and rationing. It ain't no joke and can be proven.

I sort of get the whole death panels rationale having seen a hospital recently. One patient was in there for the second time in two weeks after a long stay before. Medicaid natch. Doesn't take her meds they prescribe her. Some problem with Tricare or something but sounded more like lack of effort. Actually refused a program which was offered to help her get and take her meds. Not interested in dieting or exercise.
Sad story though. No visitors. She calls her family for "chicken nuggets." But they didn't show for the two days I saw.
Doctors have basically three tools: 1) drugs 2) surgery 3) placebo effect and 4) health advice. If a patient shows up and expects a hospital to make her take her meds for a short time in order to be released and readmitted a short time later, what should they do (assuming the pile of money and man hours is not unlimited)?

let insurance companies (use the auto insurance gag) compete across state lines.
Let people select the coverage they want/need.
Make the process of billing from the Medical side more transparent and even. No other place can you walk in and not get an estimate of your costs that is accurate before you sign to have it done. Even Dentists don't try to pull that sh!t.
Flat fees for every procedure or test listed somewhere.
No cost sharing: higher for cash patients, lower for insurance patients.
same care for every patient. the only thing government subsidizes is a minimal insurance for children and the genuinely indigent.
Get the government out of my body. (isn't that one of liberals mantras?

Easy.
Also, listen to tsrblke, he knows of what he speaks.
Heck, even if you qualify for medicaid now when you didn't before, or have on of the other goodies, you'll be worse off than you were before in short order. Make no mistake, Obamacare will destroy the private health care system in the US. If the mandate had been struck down but the rest left, it would have happened faster, but it will happen all the same.

You can repeal it but we better have something to replace it with... As it stands now, I am going to be better off with the AHCA than I was with what we had before it. Feels a bit weird to say it as a republican.
I do not want anything replacing ACA unless it's some kind of bill to open the sale of insurance across state lines and/or getting rids of the vast majority of regulations that make insurance so expensive. My pipe dream is to decouple insurance from employment. Sure, that may make me nigh to uninsurable but so be it.

People are saying, "Roberts changed his position after pressure from Obama and the media!". But perhaps there is another angle. Perhaps the pressure from Obama and the media so incensed Roberts that he came up with a plan that would assure Obama's defeat?

Make the process of billing from the Medical side more transparent and even.
This. All of the this. I review medical bills several times a week and the question "What did you actually bill and what payment did you actually receive?" usually takes multiple phone calls, several cross checks and then it will still be wrong.
We laid off everyone (or moved to 1099)
Annnnd then there's that. More and more people are going to be forced to be self-employed as employers are going to do everything in their power to stay under the 50 or 25 or whatever the magic number will be to trigger the penalties. I don't blame an employer for doing that at all, it's only rational. You want to work? You're going to end up working as a contractor whether you like it or not.
My prior employer was run by huge liberals who loudly favored single payer. They also made damn sure that they never got over the 50 employee threshhold in order to avoid all the additional requirements that kick in with that.

Seriously though, I watch people get up and cheer for things like "Medicare for all!" because they think it'll work (ha!) or look to other countries (Fareed Zakaria was all up in Taiwan on CNN explaining how we need to be more like them, utter bullshit.)
Here's what it really boils down to. There are a lot of things our system does well, and some things it does not so well. We need to be aiming to improve the latter without screwing over the former. At best, Obama care sells out the former at the expense of the latter (so it would cover more people than our system does, but not as well.) Yes, we need to get better at paper records and billing, etc. Government Fiat isn't going to accomplish that though (in fact, Government Fiat created a highly artificial demand for electronic records systems, leading to a situation where the goal became to get them set up quickly rather than correctly, so currently there are several EHR software suites that can't properly communicate with each other.)
(I've truncated this because I'm busy, expand it accordingly)

One of the things he noted was that the liberals in CA had several bills ready to go if the ruling struck it down--bills which went quite a bit further than the ObamaTax.
So, why hasn't anyone in the GOP introduced a bill to tax those who choose not to carry their child to term?
We're not taxing abortion, we're taxing the decision not to give birth. They are still free to have all the abortions they want, they are not free--in the words of Roberts--to refuse to pay the tax.

With all due respect, Bill, long ball is political, and this ObamaTax decision goes much deeper than politics. It cuts at the very core of American liberty. In that way, even if this WERE political long ball, it's still shortsighted and foolish. A minor political victory for either side weighed against the Legislature's seemingly newfound power to tax ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING, even things that don't exist, is not a victory at all. It's national suicide.

Yup, the worst place to be is in the 50-150 range. You can more or less all of the regulations as a larger business without being large enough to get all the tax benefits and other goodies.
I fully expect there to be a hardcore push to say that anyone who is on a contract over 90 days will be deemed an employee. I think, though I'm not sure, there are some states that do this now for purposes of wc and unemployment.

Keep in mind that they did not tie the "Cadilac health plan tax" to any index, like CPI or inflation. This means that, as the law is written, everyone who has a private health plan today will end up being forced to pay the Cadilac tax within the next 10 years (or sooner).

Since guaranteed issue hasn't come to pass, yet, I call BS.
HIPAA already required that your pre-existing condition be covered if you'd carried creditable coverage prior to your current policy. If you weren't carrying coverage when you acquired the condition, why should anyone other than you pay for it?
Where you denied coverage prior to acquiring the condition in question? If so, why? Were you aware that your state almost certainly (I think 45 of the 50 do) has a High Risk Pool which will cover all conditions and bases acceptance not on health, but on ineligibility for other coverage?
Did you or your spouse work for an employer who provided health coverage? If so, you were automatically qualified for that coverage. They might not have covered your pre-existing condition immediately, but after a waiting period (typically 12 - 18 months, if you didn't have prior creditable coverage) they were already required to cover the condition- HIPAA was passed in 1996 which requires that. If you did have creditable coverage, they were required to cover said condition immediately.

A slave to the Leftist bureaucrats, and a slavce to the Welfare Class.
Time for a slave uprising. Let us ponder the example of Haiti (OK - hear me out). The slaves there rose up and took very definitive action - nowadays nobody is left there who does not physically resemble the slave rebels. Imagine the result here if one day we woke up and everybody "looked like us" in terms of behavior and values - hard working, law abiding, free-minded individuals.

It was one of those "Demotivator" poster mockups. The title was "SOLUTION." and the image was a US Flag with a tiny plug taken out of it and moved to one side. The plug was strategically removed so that it took out one star in the blue field, and a little bit of white and red stripe, such that this piece, when viewed on it's own, made the Texas State Flag.
Lurved. I'd provide a link, but I can't find the image in a normal image-search.

Romney has no track record of taking major liberal policies to the right. None. In fact the opposite is true.
Even getting rid of OCare means nothing as the rule of law and the system of checks and balances in the US has been serious wounded possibly mortally.

"I fear the Republicans don't have the guts to eliminate the EPA. Unlike Scott Walker, they won't do the 'right' thing and let the results speak for themselves. "
Doing it would be a huge challenge in the "court of public opinion." You'd have to fight a lot of claims of "hating the environment," "being against clean air," and "being against clean water."
You'd have everyone who owns a copy of "Gasland" up against you.
To do it right, you would need to make sure your term is long enough to survive the period of unpopularity, and start showing some success before you're done in your position. Not so much for your own chances of getting re-elected, but for sake of the person replacing you not putting everything back.

While Congressional Republicans have seized on the Supreme CourtÂ’s ruling that President ObamaÂ’s health care overhaul is constitutional as a tax, presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt RomneyÂ’s top campaign strategist undercut that line of argument Monday, saying that the governor agrees with Mr. Obama that the law is not a tax.
“The governor has consistently described the mandate in Massachusetts as a penalty,” Eric Fehrnstrom, Mr. Romney’s strategist, said on MSNBC. “The governor disagreed with the ruling of the court; he agreed with the dissent that was written by Justice Scalia, which clearly states the mandate was not a tax.”
Oh good. That clears things up nicely. Maybe next we can argue the meaning of "is".

Will any type of wood work or certain types only?
Really, you can do this with any vegetable matter.
And that goes for both alchohol and wood gas to some extent, though certain types lend better to different methods. Obviously, high sugar content will easily produce alchohol. Getting alchohol from fermenting wood and sawdust is possible, but not hardly worth the effort and it is technically very difficult.
Wood gasifiers will probably work best with wood... actually, I have read best with charcoal which you can make from wood.
But I wouldn't rule out throwing a bunch of bananas and some switch grass in there and having it work a bit in a pinch. It's all hydrocarbons anyway.

If you think about it, this has been a big win for companies. If you work part time they don't have to give you any perks like insurance. So the trick has been to limit your hours so you are considered part time. This is going on all over the country. And if you ask about carrying your own insurance, even though you are part time, they refer you to the bank of mom and dad.
This is good for the administration. Can you imagine how many people would be running around not covered by insurance? It would be way more obvious than it is now. Right now, it still looks like "everything's fine"

That just goes back to the fundementally essential nature of having a still.
Then you can make distilled water. Granted, it won't be completely soft... may wind up with some azeotropes. But everyone should have a still.

If mom and dad are paying most or all of the premium, they aren't so hot to keep junior on the insurance.
And if you're 26 - 30 and in good health, there's no reason you can't carry your own (lesser) coverage at a decent cost already.

461 Roberts' decision was correct, brilliant and pro-Conservative:
Posted by: sympleton
this is the debate, right here. Maybe this is a correct assessment of the ultimate effects, maybe not. In any case it was a calculated gamble for Roberts that accomplished a great number of internal court goals, but very little general political ones, especially when one stops to consider that the whole thing could have been struck down.
Frankly, the downside of striking it down (liberal anger and calls for a packed court or some such) is not a very good reason to take this gamble. I agree with teh idea that this significantly limited the commerce clause, but the substitution of the tax power is not as institutionally limited as Roberts might think.
All in all, a gamble and a dangerous one, when the other option was so much in play.

My interest in steam engines is partially because I had a model one as a kid and so it's nostalgia not practicality. It really isn't hard to do without electricity in daily life except for refrigeration. They do make propane refrigerators but if there's no electricity propane is probably going to be scarce too.

That's my view also. But who lied about it being a tax?
The Ocare attorneys ? Or the judge who appears to have made " tax"appear from thin air? Who owns the misrepresentation of the facts.
Where did the tax theory come from? How can a judge rule on something other than what is at issue ?
I guess I'll have to wait 5 years for volume 1 of "The Late Great United States" from Treebark Press to find out.

You, sir or madam, are a moron. And not in a good way.
First off, no one (except the Chief Justice John Roberts, out of whole cloth) thinks this is a tax. It was not passed as a tax. The word "tax" was specifically avoided. It is a regulatory penalty. Those are two different things. For one thing, one is based on positive action: you choose to do something, so you pay a tax. The other is based on negative action (or: inaction): you chose not to do something, so you pay a penalty. And that's only the most superficial change.
Further, if the US Government has the authority to tax your choice not to engage in some behavior (when they already also have the power to tax your choice to engage in that same behavior), the US Government is under no constraints whatsoever.
The problem with the Commerce Clause abuse is not that it simply takes authority not in evidence, but that if "everything" including inaction is commerce, then the Federal Government has no limits. The same is true if they can tax any activity and its opposite inactivity. But we know that a limited Federal Government is specifically what the framers had in mind when they wrote the Constitution.
So, congratulations, your oh-so-conservative victory has made you a slave, the only difference is that the US Government won't track you down if you run away (but you'll have to pay your redemption price), and they won't use actual metal chains. Yet.

No. All I'm saying is there's a correlation between the mineral content in water and maintainence. Maintainence of steam engines is high just in itself, but if one lives in a part of the country where mineral content in water is high the maintainence will be higher.

Hollowpoint...I agree with you, there isn't much political downside for repealing the law. Especially when so many of the GOP reps specifically were elected to do so.
The problem is, and I hate to be on the side of the eyeores here, is that the remaining Dems and the shills in the MFM aren't just gonna let it happen. The caterwauling will be epic. I wish the announcements of gayness would just stop altogether. Who is this helping? It's nothing but attention whoring. Nobody is going to quit bullying others because some famous person came out in solidarity with the bullying victim. It's an absurd notion.
Wanna be gay? Great - be thankful you're in a Western society and go about your business. If it's not supposed to be a big deal, then quit making it a big deal.

I'm pretty sure that the fact that he wasn't open about it until now means that he hated gays until now.
At least, that's what I'd tell his fans. With a hurt expression on my face or something.

Not enough of them were elected to repeal it. Any House bill to repeal would be nothing more than a symbolic gesture.
The Dems couldn't get a single Republican to vote for it- not even the Maine bimbos. Hell, they couldn't even get all Dems to vote for it. You'd have us believe they'll jeopardize their re-election by turning around and voting not to repeal an unpopular bill?
While the GOP has too often gone weak on spending, on taxes they've held the line- they haven't forgotten what happened to HW Bush when he reneged on his "no new taxes" pledge.

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.
Don't ask me what I want it for
If you don't want to pay some more
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me.

I rather think the fact that alex is epically lazy is alex's weak spot. Also her tendency to refer to herself in the third person.

Does anyone know of a major federal program that Republicans have repealed?
We are therefore forever saddled with ObamaCare. And because of the way it was written it will be a monster. As Mark Steyn has said the very nature of the relationship of the people to the government has forever changed.
Posted by: harold at July 02, 2012 10:00 AM (JKNLp)
It's not "visionary leadership" that would get the GOP the necessary 2/3 majority in both the House and Senate while also convincing 3/4 of state legislatures to go along with amending the Constitution.

As far as I can tell from the Fehnstrom quote, as a matter of jurisprudence agreeing with Scalia, instead of Roberts. Saying, in essence, it should have been found unconstitutional. Nothing wrong with that.
Quotes will be spun out of context (especially Fehsntrom quotes, cf. "etch-a-sketch"), and often by people with other interests than us. I'd look to the full quote before getting outraged.
It's true that the tax/ penalty thing is a tricky one for soundbites and political messaging, and I'm not sure the Romney team has a coherent political strategy yet. But explicitly saying you agree with Scalia's opinion instead of Roberts's isn't a bad thing in my book.
