Today is primary day in NH for state and local offices, including governor. I'll be interested to see what the turnout is like on both sides. There are two leading contenders for the Republican spot -- Ovide Lamontagne and Kevin Smith -- and what seems to be a metric fuckton of contenders for the Democratic spot, most notably Jackie Cilley (the SEIU-endorsed candidate) and Maggie Hassan. John Lynch, the incumbent Democrat, has chosen not to run for re-election this year, so the race is wide open.

The gubernatorial race is going to be a big indicator, IMHO, of how NH will swing in the general election. If there's a lot of enthusiasm on the Democratic side of the ticket, driven by panic at the thought of losing the governor's office after eight years of Lynch, then I could see us going blue. Otherwise I can't imagine NH being anything but red for Romney.

They choose the party and candidates who they believe will directly help themselves and the people they identify with economically: Unions, small business. If you look for more ideology in their views, you won't find it.

Romney is probably saving his ammo, but he risks allowing Obama defining him as being against the interests of various groups. Most people don't watch and understand ideological debates; they don't read journals and blogs. If they form a view of R & R as being potentially harmful to their group, that view will be difficult to Undo.

I'd really like to see CAC's analysis, too, since I'm speaking from a totally layperson perspective.

It almost makes me wonder if Lynch didn't get a little nudge into retirement from the national Dems, for exactly this reason: higher Dem turnout at the polls in November. Lynch has always been what I term a "chewing gum" politician, in that he's never been a bombastic, strident partisan. He's done plenty of partisan things that boil my blood (vetoing Right to Work legislation, passing gay marriage legislation even though he vowed he wouldn't go against the will of the voters who originally voted it down), but he never got up on stage and pounded his fist on the podium like some partisan politicos.

That's how he was able to coast into office the last three or four election cycles - he was good for the left, and palatable for the right. If he was running again, Dems who feel unenthusiastic about Obama wouldn't have any reason to turn out to vote this year, b/c Lynch would probably be re-elected (though I doubt that, since the Republican contenders are very strong this year). Now that they have to fight to keep the seat, they'll have to show up. And if they show up, they'll probably vote for Obama.
