Obama's "Reframing" Speech Was a Replay
— Gabriel Malor

Yesterday the President claimed he would be reframing and rebooting his campaign's economic plans (I guess the old standby "pivot to jobs" is too worn out). But if you were unfortunate enough to have seen it, you'd have noticed that the speech was awfully familiar.

Why, it's just the same tired speech he always gives!!!

The RNC it's doing amazing fast response work with these ads. Kudos to Chairman Priebus and his team.

"As I have always said..."

"Some say..."

"Failed policies of the previous eight years (or something)..."

"For wealthy people like me..."

"Tax breaks for big oil..."

"Investments..."

"Teachers, policemen, and firefighters..."

"...through reduction in fraud and waste..."

Proving that one does not even have to pay attention any more to what he says.  Ever.

30 L'il Barry makes the case why we should never nominate another Lincoln, Eisenhower, Nixon, or any other big government/"kindler-gentler" Republican, and I agree wholeheartedly. If you can't do a Dr. Johnson refuting Bishop Berkeley ("I refute it thus!" (kicks forcefully)) when some hand-wringer whines "but then it won't get done", then at least recall what General George S. Patton is reported to have said when asked about the 40,000 dead soldiers and airmen of the 3rd Army and 8th Airforce: "It is time to consider how many dead we'd have had [without maneuver warfare]". In other words, ask yourself whether if the Federal government hadn't milked us of taxes and built the interstate system we'd have flying cars instead. I shudder to think what a Romney administration will give us: e.g., the National Post-mortem "Baptism" Command deep underground in the Utah desert.

Well the Interstate highways were actually intended as high-speed roads for military use in time of war.  Eisenhower had been particularly impressed by the Germans' autobahn and the U.S. didn't have anything like it at the time.  So there was really a national defence rational for building the interstates.

Other than that, the SCOAMF was making the case that the federal government has gotten deeply involved in matters having nothing to do with the enumerated powers in the U.S. Constitution and should be state-level issues.  When we're shivering in the dark cold, I'm sure the proles will be especially grateful to the EPA  because  we won't have eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil hydrocarbons to generate power.

The Republican Leadership should better utilize Fred's talents during this 2012 campaign, including franchising on the First Principles campaign platform. Currently, there isn't a better "communicator" nor a sharper wit with solid Republican credibility than Fred. The others on his par are commentators like Mark Steyn, John Stossel, not afraid to intelligently tag it as they see it with laser intensity.

With Greta, Fred was reminding Congress to extend the Bush Tax Cuts, explaining that those were certainly not what led to the 2008 economic collapse as Obama premises. And he critically encouraged Mitt to solidify his conservative legs under him, warning Republicans to take nothing for granted towards this 2012 potus campaign results.

Sneed hears the Chicago Police Department, which is battling a recent rise in homicides and violent crime, has new marching orders this weekend.

Provide security for a private wedding!!!!!

How about them apples!

In the midst of a recent homicide spike and prediction of a weekend weather scorcher, Sneed is told somewhere between 100 to 200 police officers will be dispatched to help “secure the perimeter” of a high-profile wedding in Kenwood.

Translation: The president will be there. Barack Obama and his family will be in town for three days of private, unofficial business — tops of which will be the backyard wedding of senior adviser/inner sanctum best friend Valerie Jarrett’s daughter, Laura.

Further translation: A section of Kenwood will be entirely surrounded. The festivities also will include friends gathering at ObamaÂ’s Kenwood home and a backyard barbecue at the home of neighbor Allison Davis.

It's a good thing that Chicago is so safe and crime free that 200 cops can be pulled from duty to surround a wedding. And Barry won't reimburse the city for the cops

OK,

As someone who works/worked in the field of Medical research, I can say this.  He cited basically 5600 grants to be elimiated.  When one considers the amount of grants given this isn't all that many.  Hell I wonder how many grants you could just cut by eliminating the NIH's division of Alternative medicine (yeah, such a POS exists and look at the shit they pay for: nccam.nih.gov adding the Http part of course).

Also start reforming some of the F&A parts of grants, and maybe trim the R01 value down a bit and I'd bet you could basically keep the same science funding effect with less money  (And I'm pro science and even pro-some governmet expenditures on bench science.)

Actually they were all over putting together the force it will take to defeat the mandate BUT their understanding of politics is remedial. I was afraid I was going to do one of those table headers where I become so stunned at someone's lack of understanding my head crashes to the fore. Like my famous Alamo story.

Regardless, they want to protect the Church, they really do but they also want to take the opportunity when they're talking about Sandra Fluke et al to "teach" about NFP etc. While that's fine and I completely understand the impetus, this isn't the time for that. This struggle is about religious freedom not about birth control. Hell, the struggle isn't even about birth control but about Despotism and abortifacients.

They were truly a lovely bunch but will need some radicalizing to get much done.

Yes.

CDs store about 700mb of information. Assume that an album has 10 songs, so that is about 70mb/song. A typical compression program will crunch that 70mb into about 3mb-5mb.

An interesting (geeky though) test is to listen to a CD and a compressed version of that CD side by side. The difference is significant, although it really depends on the kind of music.

Loss-less conversion is always an option.  It takes the full CD size (most music CD's are rarely completely full.)  And not all devices will play Lossless (although iPods play Apple's Losselss codec, so it's really only a problem with a knockoff device.)

I opted not to go lossless because I'd have to re-rip everything I already ripped.  Also worht nothing that AAC (apple's codec) and WMA (MS's codec) have gotten better at compression (as has MP3 I believe) so it's getting better at a quality/size ratio.

I'm glad to hear that.  And I agree with you that now is simply not the time to be pushing NFP, it'll backfire.

Link in my Sig to an an article from late Feb. about Washington wanting to make Abortion coverage mandatory in insurance.  Focus on that, the end result of any mandated coverage.

I dunno if you can get much traction the "lifestyle" argument.  (The idea that hormonal birth control is a lifestyle choice rather than a "healthcare" choice from the standpoint of what insurance is meant to accomplish, and thus shouldn't be mandated in insurance, regardless of your love or opposition of it.)  My experience is that people who are trying to push NFP lose the forest for the tress in this area with the "but birth control is wrong?!" cries, missing the point which is to reframe the discussion.'

I'm glad someone's working on this, becuase you'll get no help from a Certian Organization run by a certain Nun who has a "special pen" held by Teh One!  Trust me, they're too busy trying to figure out how to justify this.

(FWIW, I come out of the McCormick Tradition of moral Theology/Philosophy so I don't really have a problem with Birth Control itself, and I've made theological arguments more or less in favor of my position.  However I have a HUGE problem with requiring the coverage of by insurance, for the obvious reasons.)

No, the correct slogan is:  Ba-rack To The Future.

He is the one he's been waiting for.  That all makes more sense now.

Erg, no it's not "better compression" it's simply *not* comprssion.  It's a conversion Codec, but not a compression.  Hence it takes exactly the same digital space as a CD, but is playable by more devices.

It's basically a disk image, except that it's broken up into the proper tracts.  Or at least that's how the Windows Media one works.  Apple likes to stick fancy names on their shit that don't always reflect reality, so their "lossless" codec may be more like "Stainless steel"

I'll put that one in my back pocket.

I was desperate trying to explain that while I am full on with the theology countering the mandate argument with NFP is a net loser in this particular argument. You can't counter the "they want to take your birth control away" with "use this thermometer". It's a valid argument but the education required to get there is prohibitive. We want to get a conscience protection provision through congress (which we may not need depending on the results of the Freedom of Religion Restoration Act in court) and get rid of this fucking mandate.

Everyone, not just catholics have to be on board with protecting the first amendment. Creeping communism is everyone's problem.

I'm trying to figure out how to push the happenings in Washington State that I linked up the chain.

The general argument (which I reject, but whatever) is "well these people are using BC anyway...."

But look! Over there! Someone's tryign to actually mandate abortion coverage!  Seriously, it's not a strawman.  And you'd be hard pressed to find a ton of Catholics (even those using BC) who are pro-abortion.  Even if they split exactly as the national polls showed (unlikely) you'd be looking at a statistical dead heat of people "OK" with abortion and people who are opposed to it (and likely think it's murder.)  Yet let's go ahead and mandate it!  Yaaaaay!

If that alone doesn't scare people off the mandate, nothing will.  Once government can make people buy insurance, and can define what "insurance" is, it's all over.

A younger girl said that last night, that "everyone uses birth control" is the obvious bitch. Dolan responded to that with "well, everyone may cheat on tests or speed, or break some law but the Church is not in the business of encouraging it or helping".
The other outrageous LIE is that 98% of catholics use birth control---that number includes abstinence. That really pisses me off. It's also an impossible number.
The Cardinals are meeting in Atlanta to decide if the American Church is going to 1. Pay the fine 2. Close Down or 3. Resist per Card Dolan yesterday. They want it to pay for abortifacients, sterilizations, and birth control now. I'm sure abortions themselves are next and then forced sterilizations, abortions, etc. Somewhere in that timeline is forced marrying of gays and God knows what else.

I'm aware of fact that the 98% is a load of crap (IIRC it doesn't actually include abstinence, what it does is specifically exclude non-sexually active people.)  Additionally it cheats.  If a woman uses BC as an acne treatment, or to get Accutane, as required by some states, or for Cysts, etc. it counts.  Even though the church would count neither of those as "use of birth control" for the purposes of morality, of insurance for that matter.  BUT it is convincing to what is the equivalent of the Low Information Voters.  So I try to reframe the topic.  Sometimes you flush the best philosophical argument down the drain for the most convincing, and still philosophically sound argument. Is it my ideal?  No! In an ideal world I'd explain why the numbers are crap, the intention of the lying, etc. But frankly that battle is being fought and I can't tell if we're losing, it's a stalemate, or we're just being ignored

I am, in fact, supposed to be working on a paper for this (the numbers game and other "half facts" actually.  Which reminds me, I need to go email the guy and gal I'm working on that with.  At the rate we're moving, I expect to have it done by the end of the SCOAMF's tenure.

219 165 The middle class is disappearing because unions are going away ========================= That's right. I forgot that despite only comprising 35% of all US workers at their peak, labor unions created the middle class. Pass the bath salts. Posted by: Jay at June 15, 2012 09:27 AM (3LaGb) Nah. In reality, unions just provided a mechanism for those not capable of success in a purely merit-based system to enjoy the benefits of the middle class. In times of plenty, the masses tolerated such Affirmative Action. Then they got greedy and started believing the reason it was hard to fire one of them is because of their superior work ethic/skills. Combine that with hard times and all of a sudden unions look like the scam they actually became. One could just as easily claim that the middle class is going away because of paying for union salaries and benefits, either directly in the public sector or through higher prices in the public sector, is wiping out the taxpayer. Every time someone claims "the unions gave you 40-hour work week", ask them what they did to the steel industry? How come we got our asses kicked in the auto industry?

I became disgusted with the RNC several years ago, back during the second Bush term. Since that point I've been donating directly to candidates I like across the country and sidestepping the RNC.
