Oct 3-4, 1993: The Battle of Mogadishu
— Dave in Texas

Hard to believe it's been 19 years.

Two Medals of Honor were awarded, to MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shughart, along with seven Silver Stars, ten Bronze Stars, and an awful lot of Purple Hearts.

It really is hard to believe it's 19 years ago. I'm glad that the attempt to paint to troops in a bad light via the movie Black Hawk Down failed miserably. In fact, it was a great movie.

Book is fantastic, too. Mark Bowden is a must read, for me.

I agree, it makes them look like heroes, and is one of my favorite movies to watch.

But I have read that it wasn't Hollywood's intent for that message to come through in that movie. Maybe I'm wrong and the sources are wrong, but it's easy to believe that spin. Hoot is the one I point to. Some of the things the character says, seems to point the movie in a different direction. But his actions speak louder than his words.

45 Just wait till TFG pushes the button to send the hardasses in camo to pick up Stevens's killers. He desparately wants to send in a raid to do this. Killing them won't be of any value to him politically, because opponents could say how the fuck do we know they are really the guys. Even if all the MFM says, "yeah, they were the killers!" there could be seeds of doubt and our opposition would be tooting it out loudly. But a scoop-up will happen, and then we will be treated to a ten day period or more, in which the MFM and the WH will hold the longest and loudest victory party in history, in an attempt to dominate the news feeds. Will this win it for him? Probably.

In October 1993, while supporting the requirements of the President of the United States, Night Stalkers engaged an unconventional, hostile force in Somalia. The Soldiers of the 160th entered into an 18-hour firefight of intensity that had not been encountered since Vietnam. This battle resulted in the loss of five Night Stalkers and eight aircraft damaged or destroyed. The dedicated efforts exhibited by these Soldiers to overcome adversity and rescue fellow comrades once again demonstrated that “Night Stalkers Don’t Quit.” The Regiment supported Operation Uphold Democracy in late 1994, validating the Adaptive Joint Force Package concept, by conducting missions from the aircraft carrier USS America. Since February 2001, the Regiment had been comprised of three assault battalions, 1st and 2nd Bns. at Fort Campbell and 3rd Bn. at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.; the Headquarters Company at Fort Campbell; the Special Operations Aviation Training Company at Fort Campbell; D Co., 160th, forward deployed in support of U.S. Southern Command; and E Co., 160th, forward deployed in the U.S. Pacific Command area of responsibility.

68 Mark Bowden's book "Black Hawk Down" left me with four indelible images. The first was the view from above of Mogadishu from the open door of a helicopter, the city a total third-world wasteland, worse than anything imaginable by the set designers of the Mad Max movies. Second, the incredible level of skills demonstrated to the rangers by their delta force ("D-boys") cohorts. D-boy pops into a room where a pinned down ranger is cooped, asks where the bad guys are positioned, pulls out some tech and ammo gear from his pack, and wastes the skinnies two blocks away. Third, the loud racket created by the spent machine-gun brass raining down on the tin roofs of the shacks our guys are pinned down in, from the tiny little-bird heli gunships blasting down the boulevards at rooftop level, laying down fire at the skinnies. Fourth, the sound the rangers and D-boys can hear when the rescue convoy, a big array of mechanized armor, comes in after massing at the coast. Louder than any thunder imaginable, even to all of them with their ears just about blown from the incredible firefight they are in and have been in, the deafening booms of big bore guns is a wonderful sound to their near-deaf ears.

'This does not bode well for R&D or innovation in the near- to mid-term. Bad enough that both company- and government-funded investment in technology is projected to decline substantially during the next few years as a direct result of sequestration. Exacerbating the situation will be the financial pressures that the smallest suppliers will come under—companies that are responsible for most of the innovation in aerospace and defense."

77 Clinton blames the failure of the mission on "conservative Republicans."

----

I see that Pelosi blames the Libya killing on conservative Republicans:

“ItÂ’s also important to note that the Republican appropriation Congress gave the administration $300 million less than it asked for for the State Department, including funding for security,” said Pelosi.

“Are you suggesting that there was a financial aspect to what happened in Benghazi, Libya,” Blitzer asked. “That the U.S. was not enough money to protect American diplomats?”

Pelosi said that the Congress has the power of the purse, and that no one would know exactly what happened in Benghazi in the near future. “But we also have to look to ourselves in terms of that funding question,” said Pelosi.

She went on to slam Republicans for not holding a full hearing on the events on Benghazi and said that Democrats had held a hearing on Medicare without Republicans.

80 Jay in Ames, 11:30 - "I have read that it wasn't Hollywood's intent for that message to come through in that movie." Could be - I hadn't heard or read that. I can tell you that it's a favorite among soldiers with off-hours to kill in MWR centers far from home. You know another movie where the outcome wasn't what its makers intended? Fat Man and Little Boy (though come to think of it, the director of "The Kingdom" was appalled at audience enthusiasm for the jihadi-wasting scenes). I read that the director, lefty Brit Roland Joffe, wanted the audience to hate General Groves. Paul freakin' Newman, who I'm guessing was no fan of the general, played him (a much smaller and thinner version than in real life). But he played him as such a tough, effective son of a bitch, audiences admired him, a lot.

Funny how that works, isn't it?

One group pulls themselves up by their bootstraps, takes care of themselves and their own, cleans up, and  rebuilds without their hands stuck out.

The other group sits on their collective butts while the water rises, does not prepare in any way,  waits for whitey to come carry them out, loots stores for non-essentual goods, demands to be clothed, fed, housed, etc.., does not do anything to rebuild their lives...just waits for the gov'ment and whitey to provide all so they can return to their thug lifestyle as quickly as possible.

What's the variable here?  hmmmmmm

The one thing that is not mentioned about the battle in Mogadishu is that it is estimated we killed over a thousand of them. A great number of people think that our guys were killed withoutreally inflicting great casualties on the enemy. We should have gone back and finished the job<<<<<<

That's why I preferred Bowden's book over the movie.

In the book, when the Rangers get back to the stadium, a soldier there, looking at their dead and wounded says that he feels  sorry for them.

The Ranger says that he shouldn't.  He should "feel sorry for them, because we kicked their ass."

It's like he didn't realize that people were already kind of aware that the Crusading Christians weren't the nicest of people.  The problem was that he made out the badguy to be the badguy.  Whoops.

If he'd wanted a "poor, peaceful Muslims" film, he should have shot it from the POV of Saladin.  Instead, he shot it from the POV of one of two decent characters in the movie.  The other decent character ends with his head on a Muslim spike.  That made it really easy- even without already hating Jihadis, to hate Muslims in the movie.

He was going for "Oh, those evil Templars started the war, and then left their own to pick up the pieces."  He didn't quite get there, though.

Nagin and his wife, Seletha, put the house on the market in November for $729,000, fueling speculation that they were pulling up stakes in New Orleans. The family began renting a townhouse in the Dallas suburb of Frisco shortly after Hurricane Katrina, finally buying the place as a second property in 2007.

---

Nagin didn't respond to an email sent Wednesday asking for comment. He initially tweeted a link Nov. 8 to a news story that the house was on the market, but he hasn't written an original tweet since June 28, according to his Twitter account. That's the day after federal court documents disclosed that he had accepted a $50,000 payoff while in office from city vendor Frank Fradella. Fradella has pleaded guilty to one count of securities fraud and one count of conspiring to bribe Nagin.

The mayor's aide and neighbor on Park Island, convicted former chief technology officer Greg Meffert, has also tried to unload his home. It spent 15 months on the market before it was removed from the listings last year. Meffert, who is facing eight years in federal prison for accepting bribes while working at City Hall, had asked for $779,000. He bought it for $725,000 in 2002, shortly after accepting a job in Nagin's administration.

113 There were not significant reservations about the raid when it was being planned. People's recollections (even some in the article) were "we can do this". It was a mission and Rangers always complete the mission.

Sure in retrospect, one can say things like why are we acting as a UN police force? Why are we depending on foreign forces as our QRF backup? Why in God's name didn't Clinton authorize the heavy equipment that was needed to protect our guys when this thing went South?

Certainly those are covered in the lessons learned and ingrained in today's battle plans.

But none of  them. Not one. Takes away from the sacrifice, valor, bravery and honor expended and gained by all on that mission.

149 Is important to remember a few things.

1- The lack of armor sent to Mogadishu was a political decision made by Clinton's admin.

2- The shift to grabbing tribal leaders was Clinton's decision.

3- Prior to the Rangers and Tenth Mountain being there the area was controlled by the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit which had the place pretty locked down. Why? Because the MEU has armor and air as components and so did not have to ask for armor as was later requested by the Army. That request was denied because as Sec Def Aspen said, "Tanks would appear to warlike."

150

It was the moment President Bill Clinton wanted to restore his tattered reputation with the military before his departure for the D-Day celebrations in Europe this week, James Adams reports.

He had just presented posthumous Congressional Medals of Honour, America's highest military decoration, to the widows of two soldiers for valour in Somalia. After inviting the families for a moment of quiet reflection in the Oval Office, the president approached Herbert Shughart, the father of one of the two soldiers, and offered his hand.

To his astonishment the handshake was declined. ''You are not fit to be president of the United States,'' said Shughart Senior. ''The blame for my son's death rests with the White House and with you. You are not fit to command.''

The president reeled and the unprecedented onslaught continued for some minutes. According to witnesses it was a ''highly charged emotional moment'' which resulted in Clinton trying to explain to Shughart,Sr. why the events of that day last October were not his fault.
