— Ace Baseball Crank observed, with regard to Romney's changeable politics, that if we ended up with him as a candidate, we'd wind up defending him and nothing else. Because we'd have to contort ourselves so to champion him that there wouldn't much much of conservatism left, apart from Mitt Romney himself.
I cited that as a good observation, and I still do think that's a problem.
However, I'm getting the same feeling about Newt.
First, it was that leftwing attack on equity funds. Which I joined, of course, as I thought it was pretty important we have a genuine, instinctual conservative as a candidate. Even though that candidate was joining in this Hail Mary stuff about "vulture capitalism."
Anyway, now it's that... Mitt Romney attempted to cut the state budget by ending expensive kosher kitchens in state-supported nursing homes, and instead called for kosher meals to get prepared off-site and bused in to the locations where they were needed.
Would have saved the state $600,000 a year. The Democratic legislature put the kibosh on it.
Anyway, that plan to save money has turned into Gingrich's new attack:
“Romney cut off kosher food to elderly Jews on Medicare. Both of them have the same lack of concern for religious liberty.”
And a Newt 2012 radio spot (listen here) goes a step further and declares that Romney...
vetoed a bill paying for kosher food for our seniors in nursing homes -- Holocaust survivors, who for the first time, were forced to eat non-kosher, because Romney thought $5 was too much to pay for our grandparents to eat kosher.
Yeah, it was never the plan they'd eat non-kosher, just that the kosher meals would be prepared in a central kitchen.
Eh, it's politics, I guess. But I suppose that must be the end of all the whining about negative attacks (as Rush Limbaugh terms it) from Newt.
I mean, honestly. Surely we won't be hearing any more about maliciously false claims after that.
Any and all cuts will be attacked by the left in this way-- there is always some inconvenience or change we're supposed to be outraged about, some protected constituency we're supposed to rally behind to keep those budget dollars a-flowin'.
If I thought Newt believed an inch of this crap, I'd be worried about him on that score. But I don't, really. Just any club in the bag.
I think in the end neither Newt nor Mitt is offering much except themselves; there is no Gingrism, like there was a Reaganism, and no Romneyism either. (And there was no McCainism.)
There is no central idea animating either campaign, just the man himself, and since we're really not discussing ideas, but rather men, the negative attack on the opposing man himself is the only game in town.

That's how it is for conservatives. Gotta be perfect, or conservatives should support the guy with little more than a pretense of being a true conservative.
Romney can pander all day long and criticize conservatism hysterically, and it means nothing because no one trusts a word he says anyway.

Someone on HotAir last night got this one 100% right, and why it's so disgusting an attack. Remember, this is the "true con / Tea Party" candidate in the race (or so Sarah Palin tells us):
*****
The worst and most revoltingly hypocritical aspect of the “ZOMG ROMNEY HATES THE JEWS!” argument coming from Gingrich now, in his final despair, is that he is criticizing Romney for attempting to cut wasteful government spending. That’s right: Newt Gingrich, True Conservative Tea Party Hero, is attacking supposed Big Government Spending RINO Mitt Romney for trying to slash government subsidies and spending…and attacking him as a crypto-anti-Semitic religious bigot, no less.
Newt just canÂ’t help attacking from the Left. ThatÂ’s just how he rolls, b*tches.

The good news is that Mitt and Newt are going personal because there is a surprising agreement among conservatives about what needs to be done. Keep Social Security and Medicare for those over 55, take steps to make it more private and flexible for everyone else. Repeal Obamacare. Etc. Against Obama they'll be able to distinguish themselves more.
The other good news is that personal attacks work and our guys are good at 'em. Though no one is quite as good as Paul's team, those guys are vicious.

wheatie,
Greg Sargent on Twitter, in reporting on Obama's bundler list (just released today), is taunting the GOP (but focusing on Mitt) for not doing the same.

Could Newt cause nay more damage. He is completely out of control. I don't know what people are thinking in supporting him. If you could imagine the worst possible candidate to be the GOP nominee, Newt would be the perfect choice. He is as narcissistic as obama and has taken many liberal positions.

Yes, the Consitution gives a Right to Religious Freedom... but that does not mean that the STATE must PAY for your religious belief.
Its like Islam and footbaths... must the STATE pay for them? If you believe in Gaia and are a Vegan, does the State have to pay for your diet?
But that very question is lost in the General 'we now have a victim' to exploit for political gain crap.

Other than being a stupidly expensive undertaking with little tangible benefit, there's nothing wrong with it at all.

The thing is, Newt's not going to be the nominee, Mitt is. So we can sit around all day making fun of or attacking Newt for the dumb things he says, but we've got 10 months until the election. We either make Mitt responsive to the wishes of his eventual voters, or we have no right to complain when (if) he gets into office and governs in a manner that is intolerable.
Now is the time to hold his feet to the fire. If Newt is a means to do that, then yeah, I'll sit here today and tell you how awful Mitt is, and how Newt can do no wrong.

I think that the answer is: probably not.
As long as that answer is "probably" and not "definitely" Santorum does deserve serious consideration based on a reasonable risk/reward scale like any other candidate. I think "probably" is about 35-45% he wins based on my current predictions about Obama. For comparison Newt is only a little ahead of him, and Romney only a little ahead of Newt and in the dead even category with Obama. Their rewards profile goes in the reverse of their electability profile, so you take your pick.

I will tell you this....to say DON'T VOTE NEWT CUZ HE IS AN INSIDER is a specious argument. i don't CARE if he has been in Washington most of his career. I care about what they think they can do. At least both of our candidates want to do something good as opposed to ruin the entire country.

2) Sign a written agreement that if Obamacare is not off the books by 2014 AND the budget - counting entitlements - is not equal to or less then the budget when he took office he will resign.

Any fool can make a list of Romney's well-known problems, but it's worthless to a primary voter concerned about electability without explaining why the other two candidates would be a more electable pick.

As of today (likely) he will have only won 2 of the 4 primaries and has spent as much time tied for lead and behind as he has ahead. Until Mitt starts winning reliably with more than 50% of the vote he ain't "inevitable" in my book. Winning a state at 39% ought to give you the willies about what would happen if either Newt of Santorum drop. You ought to be praying the trailer gets a Huckabee hair up his arse cause that's the only way McCain rolled over Mitt, and the only way Mitt is going to overcome the base's ardent dislike of him. In either event it's far from Mayan Calendar says "ROMNEY 2012. "

Actually, this is working out just fine.
Mitt and Newt are both headed into states that they will perform well in. The delegate split will keep one or the other from dominating early and Santorum will hang on just in case someone self destructs. Everything is pointing to a brokered conventionÂ…. Excellent.
Once at the convention, it will be determined that the scorched earth campaign has damaged all the present candidates too much and since there will be hard feelings on all sides, the only option will be a shiny new candidate.
Without all the time for the media to destroy whoever it turns out to be, our candidate can be the one everyone projects their best attributes on, just as Obama was the enigma in 2008.
Life is good.

I voted for Santorum today.
He laid out a great case for how having a supporter of individual mandates as our candidate takes Obamcare off the table, and how we can't give up that argument.
And he rose above the Mitt/Newt mudfest to look like the adult in the room.
I know it's a real long shot for him to capture the nomination, and it's a shame he hasn't caught on. But his message on Obamacare needs to stay in this race front and center for as long as he can afford to stay. And who else in the race is going to talk about it so plainly and without nuance?
Regardless, it was a great feeling to vote FOR someone in a Presidential race, rather than AGAINST the other guy(s) as a strategic measure. That doesn't happen too often.
However . . . I will crawl through broken glass to vote AGAINST Obama in November. I don't care who his opponent is. SCOAMF must be defeated.

Baseball Crank observed, with regard to Romney's changeable politics, that if we ended up with him as a candidate, we'd wind up defending him and nothing else. Because we'd have to contort ourselves so to champion him that there wouldn't much much of conservatism left, apart from Mitt Romney himself.
We did precisely this for 8 years on W's domestic policy. We're experienced.

It may not look like it at the time, but most election cycles, if you do an after action report, you can see where there was little (if any) way to have gone in a different direction. So yeah, this time in '08 there were people talking about how to beat McLame, but he got 30something percent in Florida, and it started creeping (pun intended) up into the 40s, and before too long the steamroll was down the path.
It's just the way it is. The R party is conservative in that it selects the obvious front-runner, whether that person's views are conservative or not (which obviously, they usually aren't).

Anyway, I originally supported Newt back in his mr. positive phase because I heard him say clearly on Fox that when you have a Conservative candidate come out and clearly delineate the difference between Liberal and Conservative principles, the Conservative will win. I think he was right, but then he started doing and saying everything against that.
So now we're left with a choice between Newt and Mitt over who we think is lying to us the least. Ugh...the meteor never lies.

Yeah, that's how the law is written, but it's gamed beyond belief. Employers know that H1-B employees will work at a lower wage and are less likely to quit. It's been an open secret for years.
Back in the late 90's when tech workers were in genuine short supply the H1-B program made sense, but now it exists only to placate employers who enjoy hiring foreign workers at a lower wage.

Uhm, no, no, no. Mormons have a ceremony in their temples where you symbolically return to heaven and God's presence. The room that symbolically represents heaven is called 'the celestial room' and its usually used for contemplation and prayer. You can contemplate whatever you like, usually problems in your life that you need divine guidance on.
Mormonism isn't nearly as strange in reality as it is if all you know about it is cherry-picked fragments in a distorted form. If you really must act as an expert on Mormonism on the internet, read up on it at mormon.org or visit your local Mormon church, which is open to the public.

Indeed, it's really easy- you just pay all of your {engineers, developers, whatever} the same relatively low 50K/yr (or whatever). Then the only ones who will take the job in the first place are the H1Bs, but you have the paperwork to "prove" that it's the standard rate you're paying.

I cited that as a good observation, and I still do think that's a problem.
However, I'm getting the same feeling about Newt.

Bingo; all we get this time is a choice of barf bags for the primaries and a different one for the Nov 2 pull.
I think we need 50 more GD debates run by the MFM where no real issues are discussed. I hope the bastard that agreed to all those debates burns on a slow pit in Hell.

I have the Book Of Mormon in my personal library (i'm not mormon but I've alwasy wanted to read it), the Mormons are every bit as Christian as a catholic and protestant. They just happen to have some big time differing views w/ the other denominations.

How do you think I felt? I've had more tums today than in months. And it was delivered in such a sinister "I'm an obamabot dem/lib" way and it just slid off his tongue along with that "you can't win so don't even try" look and the smooth confident exit from the elevator.
The only saving grace...I was smart enough to turn him down when he asked me to go for drinks.

yeah, he also missed Hawaii by 40 pts. Nate Silver did an analysis of it and Rassmussen came in last. Silver is biased and he used the 40 pt. mistake in Hawaii to add to the average he missed by but it still happened.
Right after Silver did his comparrison Rassmussens approval rating for Obama jumped up 6 points.

I don't generally criticize the Mormon faith too much. It's got some goofiness in it, but it's low-grade stuff of the same level as you'd find in "mainstream" Christianity.
Islam, on the other hand, is seriously messed up.

The chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa announced his resignation on Tuesday after mounting pressure over his handling of the results of the caucuses that kicked off the presidential nominating process this month.
The chairman, Matthew N. Strawn, who will step down next week, was at the center of a series of embarrassing reversals over who won the party-run vote, which had the highest attendance and narrowest margin of victory in state history.

415 At this point it's still not about being eliminated delegate-wise, it's can you justify continuing the campaign for another month? Can you afford it? Have you laid enough groundwork? Are donors coming in or going away? All that jazz.
Posted by: lincolntf at January 31, 2012 03:54 PM (hiMsy)
This cycle, all it takes is one donor to keep you in.
Huntsman lost his one – his father – who knew he was an asshole before he started his campaign. Newt’s got a sugar daddy who could finance the primaries and the general all by himself and never feel it. Mitt has the network that will pump as much in as needed and Santorum will continue with the help of the social right.
And our buddy Ron Paul will stay in because heÂ’s got nothing to lose and plenty of money to do it with.

Why is it that the only people who dislike long primaries are the ones with the "inevitable" candidates?
Though, in this case, I'll agree. If our only choices are between Hemlock and Arsenic, let's write in SMOD.

I'm not all that thrilled about Romney being the last man standing (until SMOD arrives, when *no one* will be standing, heh heh heh) but y'all who think that anyone else has a chance are deluding themselves.
If Romney wins today and its not a virtual tie, there's no chance anyone else is pulling off a win, or even that we'll get a brokered convention.

Where does Paul's money come from? Is it donations? Do people actually give him that much money? Or is the stoner donation group really that flush?
Posted by: moki at January 31, 2012 04:12 PM (dZmFh)
Ron Paul has a group of really devoted followers who keep him pumped up with money. No big donors, just a lot of small givers who keep on giving.
