— Code Red The old one was starting to smell like ace's feet, so it's time to move on.
I got nothing, so here is that famous quote from Alexander Tyler. Every time I read it, I want to weep for our country:
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.
"Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage."
Attributed to Alexander Fraser Tyler

This quote is actually not quite right. Only the first part is attributed to Alexander Tytler (and even that isn't for sure).
I made this same mistake a couple weeks ago.

Holy Shit.
Alexander Tyler is certaily a prophet. the 200 year thing seems a little convenient, and perhaps contrived.

If it cheers you up some, the quote is not from Tyler and is cobbled together from disparate sources.
Also, it is not accurate. Athens fell when it lost a battle to Philip of Macedonia, The Roman Republic lasted several hundred years, and so on.

Well, it seems that we outlived our "sell by" date as a prosperous and free people about, oh, twenty years ago.
Come on SMOD, I have a nice back yard all ready for you...
Here, meteor, meteor...

Hmm.....are we in the 'apathy and dependence' stage right now? ....It sure seems like it.
Next step, bondage. .....Well, if Barky gets a 2nd term, then that's for sure what will happen. ....Starting with taking away our right to bear arms. ....Not sure how exactly he will do it, but he will find a way.

"Sad to say, our Constitution and freedom lasted a lot shorter than 200 years."
Yup. Once the Prog/Coms got started disassembling our system back in the Roaring '20's, we've been on a downhill slide ever since, with the fall becoming steeper in the past three years than ever before.
We are so screwed...and we did it to ourselves by one of the things in the post quotes, apathy.
That, and smugness, the popular "well it can't happen here" fallacy.

I've been surfing the alphabets, looking at the comments on news stories covering the Afghan shootings. People are pissed and they want out NOW! Also, sentiment seems to be high for turning the shooter over to the Afghanis.

Heck no. How would that be any different from what we have in Washington today? I'd prefer King George III over that - he was at least a decent man and a conscientious if inept monarch.

The founders set up the federal government with a limited set of powers and even added the bill of rights after to assure that those powers could not grow. But it lasted only until Adams cooked up his scheme to have the Supreme Court determine what it meant and usurp all the power to the feds.
So, no we didn't lose it in the 1920, we lost it in the early 1800s shortly after it was written.
It was completely gone by the end of the FDR regime.

I agree there.
“But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.”- Lysander Spooner

Well, if what happened with that misreading by the SC of the 14th Amendment was already happening for years before, then it's a fookin' wonder we've lasted as long as we have. I mean, I know what I've seen in my adult life (a slow motion suicide), but these past three years have been breathtaking in the speed and rapidity of our downfall at the hands of people we've stupidly elected.
And the worst part is, none of this ever needed to happen.

This would suggest that if we're headed for a brokered convention, this may have less to do with the 2012 frontrunner's relative weakness (compared to past GOP nominees) and more to do with the game being rigged (by Steele) *in order to* result in a brokered convention. But I don't know enough about the numbers to conclude one way or another.
Via the Corner, from an article in Mother Jones:
Moreover, the rules Steele bequeathed the party could yield an outcome in which Romney finishes with the most delegates, but not an outright majority, necessitating a brokered convention.
“I wanted a brokered convention,” Steele tells me. “That was one of my goals.” Why in the world would a party chairman desire apparent turmoil? To create excitement and shake up the party, Steele explains. …
Not all of the RNC officials at the time craved such creative disorder. Steele, recalls Doug Heye, then the RNC’s communications director, “said in a few interviews that as a political junkie, he’d like to see a brokered convention, and I counseled him that the party chairman may not want to advocate for chaos at a convention he has to manage.”
