— Ace Ah, the primary season of 2011-12 -- or, as I call it, "Satan's Asshole."
Justin reminds us what we have to be grateful for. So much.
I just have so much to be thankful for this primary season.I'm really glad we managed to dodge the disgusting establishment RINO Pawlenty bullet. I mean, really, a guy with the balls to go to Iowa and say he's ending ethanol subsidies? Who would want that RINO as President? I'm so thankful to Michelle Bachmann and the True Conservative cohort for killing that candidacy. And a special thanks to Sarah Palin and her I'm-gonna-run-for-president-no-i-won't-yes-I-will-cocktease. I think it's wonderful that she decided to fuck up the Republican primary in order to sell more books, and that in no way proves everything the Democrats said about her. And I can't forget Pawlenty himself, for throwing in the towel in record time.
I'd also like to thank Rick Perry, who was actually one of the most conservative candidates. Thank you, Rick, for having the nomination handed to you on a silver platter and then eating said platter because you're a fucking moron. And, once again, thanks again to Romney's BFF, Michelle Bachmann, and the True Conservative cohort. Why would we want a candidate who is weak on immigration when we could have a candidate who is weak on absolutely everything? I know, crazy right?
Finally, I'd like to thank all of the other, decent candidates who decided not to run this year because they have a better shot in 2016. Really, how much damage could another 4 years of Obama (and 30 years of complete liberal control of the Supreme Court) cause? What's really important in all of this is your personal ambition, not the fate of the country. Thank you for keeping that in mind.
Now we've got a race between Romney and Gingrich, two sure winners. Obama is as weak as an incumbent can be, and I have full faith in the ability of the GOP to take him down.
Oh, and I can't actually bring myself to thank all the twits who say that they'll never vote for Romney, even in the general. I want to give you all a special go to hell from the depths of my soul. You're worse than a Democrat. At least the Democrat voter naively believes that another Obama term is in the country's best interest. You know damn well what 4 more years of Obama mean and you'll let it happen our of petulance and pride. Yes, I'm sure we'll get the second coming of Reagan in 2016 to make up for it. That worked so well in 2008, didn't it? Idiots.
He forgot to mention 9 9 9.

You know, I'd like actual quotes from anyone saying that they'd have a better shot in 2016 and that's why they aren't running. Because otherwise? Yeah, that's a nasty, nasty slur. And I say this as someone who has bellowed WHY HAST THOU BETRAYED ME to Ryan and Jindal.
And since it's Airing Of Grievances, I want people to go read what is being said about Mitch Daniels' wife by those on the Right and then come back and tell me why anyone who isn't a total sociopath would put his/her family through the campaign process.

Justin, child, pleeeease. What does Sarah Palin have to do with any of this?
Rick Perry sucked but he doesn't deserve all the blame. All his supporters who never even ordered a bumper sticker have a share in his failure. Rick needed help; what did you do to help him?

As to this primary? I love it. Obama was a much better candidate for his battle with Hillary. Plus it's a ton of free air time for whoever the eventually nominee is.
If Mitt can't beat Newt Frigging' Gingrich; a guy who hasn't been relevant nationally in 15 years,is old, fat and named NEWT, in a primary I don't give him much chance in the General Election.

Personally, I'd like to thank Ace of Spades for putting all the money on Perry for far too long and in the face of overwhelming evidence of his weaknesses, rather than on people who were actually credible.

What I said in the other thread:
There is a type of guy who typically wins and a type of guy who doesn't.
I didn't want the RINO guy.
But I NEED OBAMA OUT OF OFFICE.
Under no circumstances can we let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
WE NEED OBAMA OUT OF OFFICE. PERIOD.
No, NOT fucking period, Ace. We need someone to undo what Obama's done, and then do what needs to be done to fix all the problems Obama's ignored.
The people you insult get that. You don't. Why not?
The voters seem to want someone who will LEAD like they want, not just someone who beats Obama, which only gets us back to the peach days of 2008, which weren't fucking peachy.
The Tea Party voters aren't scare that Romney won't beat Obama. They're scared that he'll LEAD like Obama- that is lead not much at all.
Why is that fear irrational? Why does it make them flighty or desperate for seeking alternatives for months? Months BEFORE an election, before any votes were ever cast?

I know. Ryan's a HOUSE guy. I'll blame him for not running for Senate, but not for not running for President. Rubio and Christie barely started their terms (and Christie's just too liberal for the GOP at the national level).
Daniels is really not the great savior. Excellent governor, but with less charisma than Romney and an annoying tendency to piss off the base.
Jindal's the only guy who had a plausible case to run who didn't.
But if you want to know why, look at Perry and look at Virginia. A Republican simply cannot decide to run for president so soon before the election. He can't. Perry wasn't ready on national issues or the rough-and-tumble of campaigning. He also couldn't get on the ballot in Virginia. For Democrats, it's easier. If you have one of their pre-packaged group of brownshirts on your side (SEIU) then they can do all of the hard work for you.

It's even worse than that. Apparently, in the context of giving Roe v. What is so wrong with asking Mitt to earn our vote. If we are simply going to tell Mitt - that it doesn't matter Mitt, you aren't Barack, we'll vote for you anyway - then we shouldn't complain when Mitt doesn't act like a conservative. Because like Romneycare, we can just explain it away. Maybe we will vote for Mitt, but please, earn my vote, make a minimal effort. I'm not a centrist nor an independent. Appeal to me. Then try to appeal to them.
And so what if Palin played her little dance. She can do whatever she wants. To blame what has happend in the primary thus far on Palin seems a little far fetched. Let's blame Bush too while we are at it. If it wasn't for him, maybe Jeb could have run. Perhaps Cain and Bachman screwed things up for Perry. Or maybe Perry just didn't come prepared. Maybe Perry should have skipped some debates until it was necessary for him to do them, or until he recovered from his back surgery. I don't know. Perry had his chance, he had a big lead, he let it slip away. What's done is done.
Mitch could have run, so could have Christie. They decided not to. That was their right. They didn't show up to play. After the way the other candidates are treated, can anyone blame them. Perry is now basically known as an idiot, despite being a succesful 3-term govenor of the 2nd largest state. Santorum is a creep who grieves for his lost child in weird ways.
These are the candidates we have left.

I see wisdom on both sides. One believes that 4 more years of socialist democrat action is more dangerous than 4 or 8 years of moderate, squish RINO action. At least the RINO can be made to behave by a congressional GOP majority, or so they believe and in some instances, they are probably right. Whether or not it applies to Romney or Gingrich is impossible to foresee. They are just guessing. W was a domestic disaster and few if any of the Congressional GOPs stood up to him.
The other side is convinced that the 'lose more slowly' plan of the last 20+ years has damaged conservatism to the point that the American public has little idea why conservatism was and is the best philosophical path for our Republic. Running RINO's and having to deal with their inevitable mistakes vis a vis the economy and the size of government has left a deep gash in the hull, so deep that the party and the country are sinking together. So the hardcore decides to scuttle the ship in the belief that the survivors will find another, better ship just on the horizon. I hope your kids can swim because the hardcore didn't want to sit on that boat another second.
Both sides have their points, but both cannot be right. The reason we are in this season of misery is that we should have hashed this out last year.

I donÂ’t see the reason anti-Newt people are worrying.
According to the AoS guilt by association theory, because Newt admitted to liking some of Ron PaulÂ’s ideas about auditing the Fed and strengthening our currency, it is a sure thing that Newt will show up to tonightÂ’s debate in jackboots and festooned in swastikas.
Only Nazis could possibly be attracted to any of PaulÂ’s positions and if you like one, you must (by law) adopt everything heÂ’s every said or done.

The Republican establishment is afraid Newt will win, which they fear will jeopardize House and Senate races.
The House & Senate currently have about 10% approval.
Is the establishment trying for 5%?

In all fairness to Perry, he didn't stand a chance against the pro-Romney media, which is on both the right and the left. .....A lot of us Perry supporters are pissed about that. Which is part of why Newt is winning, I think.
Romney can make gaffes, flip-flop on all the important issues, and the media gives him a pass. They think we are too stupid to notice what they are doing. .....Supporting Newt is a way of protesting against this.

If Mitt can't beat Newt Frigging' Gingrich; a guy who hasn't been relevant nationally in 15 years,is old, fat and named NEWT, in a primary I don't give him much chance in the General Election.
I'm sorry, but this just isn't true. The things a candidate needs to win the votes of the base in the primary and the things he needs to win the votes of the entire country in the general are not necessarily the same. If they were, we'd have Presidents Howard Dean and Alan Keyes.
Newt may be a killer primary vote-getter, but his incredibly high poll negatives mean he'll die an ugly death in the general. Romney may have little appeal to the base, but this election is about giving the people a palatable alternative to Obama, and Romney is palatable. He's the ham sandwich the voters want this go-around. With him, the less-committed dems stay home. With Newt, all of a sudden, those disinterested left-leaners decide to vote. Why? Because they hate Newt.

Permit me to invoke Michigan Wolverine football, back from 3 years of purgatorial suffering to win a BCS bowl this season
The new coach is Brady Hoke, a guy I frankly did not want and am glad to have been so very, very wrong about. Hoke preaches "controlled aggression" as the path to victory in football. You have to hit hard, play hard on every down and stay determined--it's a tough man's game. But you always, always keep thinking and keep your head while doing so. It's a fine line, and easy to fall off either side.
The GOP's problem is that they have two frontrunners who each have half the formula, but no clue how to get the other half. With respect to campaigning against Obama, Romney is all control without aggression, and Gingrich is all aggression without control. Neither is going to win without acquiring the other half of the puzzle.

Not true. Frequently asserted, but no more true for that. A declaration of nullity says nothing about the legal status of the marriage, just its sacramental validity. Legitimacy is not implicated by a declaration of nullity. In fact, in 19th Century Italy, people had church marriages but their children were deemed illegitimate by the Italian kingdom for failing to follow Italian law.

Romney fans who said they would campaign against Perry (because they take it personally) or Perry fans who can't support whoever the GOP nominates: you are deeply misguided.
Do you guys remember when Ann Coulter explained that we were going to nominate Romney and he was going to lose to Obama?
His electability is a trick meant to push people to supporting someone who can't win votes any other way.
We must unify in November. But right now, support the candidate you like the most. Newt can win. Ann Coulter and Jen Rubin might be right that Romney can't win. They might not be totally sincere now when they act like they never said that.
Posted by: Dustin at January 23, 2012 10:48 AM (8RL8E)

Why thankee kindly sir -- I'm one of those and I don't give a hoot about your feelings, other than to smile a bit.
RE: "You know damn well what 4 more years of Obama mean . . . "
Yup -- and I know damn well what four more years of a fake-non-conservative Republican like Romney will mean too. It will mean THE END of the Republican Party as he tacks sharply back to his accustomed place among the left, and yet continues to claim the Republican mantle. We haven't yet come close to recovering from the likes of GWB's last year and the massive damage he inflicted on the Republican brand and Romney's 10 times worse. So if this ranting guy fancies that folks will stick with the Republican Party *after* the hideous 4 years of Romney, he can think again.
RE: " . . . and you'll let it happen our of petulance and pride."
Nope. It's the establishment Republicans who'll let it happen because they insist on nomination a blatantly non-conservative candidate. If that's what they choose, so be it.

It's not like there wasn't plenty of room for any candidate to take a lead. The "true conservative" thing is bullshit and just a way of saying you are somehow better than everyone else.
Hey Ace - if you hadn't gotten on the Perry train and instead backed Romney from the start, perhaps so many people wouldn't dislike Romney right now?
Go back through your posts you freakin hypocrite and see what you had to say about Romney when you had a different horse in the race.
All you people and your whining can go to hell. The candidate who gets the most votes wins - not the candidate that your ego is tied to as "our only hope for salvation".
It's assholes like you telling me I'm stupid for not doing what you want that make me laugh. Forget persuasion. Forget conservative ideas. Forget it all. Just line up and get on team Romney or your an ignorant asshole.
What a bunch of crying morons. Yeah. It's Sara Palins fault that the candidates all suck. Sure. blame her b/c she's your big bad boogeyman. It's "true conservatives" fault that Pawlenty was a lousy candidate who gained no traction (and I would love him right now over these other clowns). Why don't you blame Trump?
This is getting to be idiotic. Grow up. do you really think a President Romney will make this country much different than Obama? Do you really think Mitt is going to tackle any tough issues like entitlement reform or anything else? I'm not saying that Newt would either. I'm saying that the U.S. is going to luck largely the same (going bankrupt, overspending, overtaxing, over-regulating) in 4 years regardless of who is elected. A truly transformative leader who changes things only comes around once in a lifetime - if that. And Romney ain't it. Neither is Gingrich.
And, by the way, I doubt very much that Romney could beat Obama. If he can't sell himself to the GOP is he really such a great damn candidate - which is the basis of all your angst, that Romney is a great candidate and somehow we are missing it. Silly.
Posted by: Monkeytoe at January 23, 2012 11:31 AM (sOx93)
I ask, what makes you guys so sure that Romney is the best candidate?
The best candidate is not running. As to why I think Romney is the better general candidate at this point:
1. His polled public favorable/unfavorable split is positive while Newt's is atrocious and likely insurmountable. It's easier to defend a good reputation than rehabilitate a bad one.
2. Romney has had a long-standing organization in place, while Newt had his entire senior staff bolt over his behavior just months ago. In a large, national campaign, logistics, organization and staff loyalty matter.
3. Newt has baggage from his time as speaker -ethics violations, erratic behavior, etc. Romney will have to contend with the 'evil Bain capitalist' slings. Romney can argue that he knows how to make money and wants to put everyone back to work so they can make money, too, appealing to the voters' self-interest. What does Newt argue? My Republican House colleagues called me unstable and reprimanded me bcse they're part of the vast left-wing conspiracy?
4. Personality. Mitt is bland, but generally steady. Newt is interesting, but erratic. Given his history, the odds of Newt imploding are much higher.
5. The personal. Romney's personal life is fine. Nice guy, nice wife, nice kids. Gingrich? His wife? Enough said.
6. The press. It's a given that they'll go after our candidate with daggers, but they find Romney less offensive ideologically than Newt, so I believe their attacks on him will be less vociferous than they'll be on Newt.
7. The public hates DC insiders and Newt has been one his whole life. The left is beating the drum against Wall Street and Mitt can be tagged Wall Street. I believe the public hates the Politician just a bit more than they hate the Businessman.
There's more, but those are the bigger reasons why I think Mitt sucks less than Newt.

Did you really just compare Reagan to MITT!?
Is Reagan the only example of someone losing a primary the first go around then winning the next time and then winning the presidency?
B/c, if so, I would point out that it is quite a bit different. Reagan was taking on an incumbent president in his first primary. Yes, it was an incumbent who was not elected (Ford), but an incumbent nevertheless. That is hugely different than an open primary.
I think the other examples are legion. Kerry, Gore, McCain, Dole. Each lost his first primary and lost their eventual bid when they were the party's nominee.
But, on the flip side is Nixon, who lost the presidency, then lost a race for Gov of Cal, then won the presidency. So, I'm not sure it means anything. It depends on circumstance and events. Someone may not be the electorate's choice today, but is tomorrow..
For instance, I would have gladly supported Romney in 2008 instead of McCain. Now I don't want Romney as the nominee.

That's not the kind of thing someone actually says publicly. Not all of the good potential candidates are sitting out this year for a better shot later, but some of them certainly are. That's why I didn't single anyone out. Once you lose in the general presidential election you're done, and even a weak incumbent is hard to beat.
Justin sounds like the kind of guy who looks past the deep voice and man hands, ignores the adam's apple and thenmakes the best of a bad situation once he's all alone with the tranny he brought home shortly after last call.
When the only other option is Barack Obama, hell yeah. I'll even play catcher. This is pretty much my feelings on the race right now. I've got the choice between two trannies and Barack Freaking Obama.
Look, I actually think this is a valid argument. I got people not voting for McCain in 2008.
But this goes out the window when the Supreme Court is in play. If Obama wins we're looking at a Supreme Court filled with relatively young, hard left justices. Justices don't even pretend to justify their actions. The country is going to keep moving left no matter what a conservative congress or president does, because the country has basically made the judicial branch the God-King of the branches of government.
There are people who would rather lose every single Supreme Court case for the next 20 years than vote for Romney. I just don't get that.

Upthread there was a comment that new posters could be DNC shills. My handle may seem new, but not really, my work has blocked access for quite some time, but today I happened to check in and voilà here's the good old comment field. I had wondered what was transpiring during the aptly named Satan's Asshole primary, when I could read the lead articles but was denied access to the commentariat...
I had assumed a pitched battle between the different factions would be taking place, but what I see today is just passionate advocacy for one's chosen candidate.
Anyway, to follow up on Tired Wench's post, I don't think we'd see a President Romney unleashing his DOJ to sue states for the simple act of protecting their own borders; or shutting down Gibson guitar on some ridiculous bureaucratic pretext, (thereby denying Americans jobs); or forcing Boeing or any other company to hire union workers. So I don't know what the big fear about Romney is. However he does need to find his voice and make a better case for himself. For instance, he could remind voters that teachers' pensions funds, among other Main Street concerns, were invested in Bain Capital.

My fear is that he's a sackless weasel who won't go after Obama once he gets the nomination.
If he's got any fight in him, I'd like to see it.

Oh, get off the cross.
You could have used the same argument in favor of George H. W. Bush, who derailed the Reagan revolution and put us back on the FDR track, but it would have been better in the long term if Mondale had won.
I haven't made up my mind whether or not I'll vote for Romney. I'm still deciding. Regardless of what I decide, you, Justin, ought to grow the hell up.
