— LauraW Well, we in the New England have had an abrupt end to an unbelievably long run of great weather. Our Spring actually started in Spring for a change, our Summer was one of the most weather-perfect in long years of memory, and this Autumn was superb leaf-peeping for weeks.
But just a few days ago we had our first Nor'easter. Something funny happens when the temperature dips and the mornings get clear and crisp. And then this funny thing intensifies when the first snows arrive.
What happens is, all the fat cells in our bodies send urgent messages of 'Want' to the Blubber Cortex of the brain. The Blubber Cortex then activates the Cake Gland, which is located in your elbow, and is responsible for lubricating and strengthening all the joints that help you bring a fork to your mouth.
And food just looks really good, all the time.
In order to get my mind off food, I took a bunch of dramatic weather-photos of puffy clouds today. Here's one.

Note the seagull off in the distance, and the low grey sky.
More cloud pictures below the fold.

Another ocean picture. I like the way the setting sun is reflected in the grits water.
Here's some especially fluffy, peaceful clouds. Make me think of Sunday mornings. And huge, roomy pants.

I like it when clouds go on the grill and get kind of a crusty bark on the outside, you know, where the fat turns to delicious candy? But the inside is still medium-rare? Yeah. Good clouds. This one reminded me of that.

Aaaaand. This is just a picture of pancakes and sausages with syrup. No idea how this one got mixed up in the series.

This concludes your awful substitute for an Ace Of Spades HQ Overnight Thread. Thank you for your patronage.
If you have any questions about the subjects you have seen here tonight, please feel free to inquire at your local public library, just for laughs. If you have complaints and psychiatric problems, send a page of your deranged gibberish to: Biggest Idiot Ever Conceived, 990 Prospect Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105.
OKAY.
So. What are you guys doing this weekend?

In 2015, it will cost $30.00.
In 2016, it will cost ten rounds of 5.56x45mm, or twenty-five arrows, or two mason jars of hootch. For five minutes with your woman on the mattress out back, you can fill it up. Just watch out for The Humongous.

This current push, if not actually driven by our enemies, seems to be along the lines of Ezra Taft Benson and Earl Butz: get people off their farms and into the cities where they'll work cheap and spend more money. Give me, instead, a well-armed yeomanry (i.e., a well-regulated militia), who can consistently put all rounds in a man-sized target from 200 yards, with a cellar full of canned home-grown produce, a sewing machine and an axe, and kerosene lamps (at least). http://preview.tinyurl.com/c886v4s

THE SECOND TERMING, by Jef Scoamf
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Terming is at hand.
The Second Terming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Dreams of my Father
Troubles my sight; somewhere in wards of Chicago
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Washington to be born?

New from Pundit Press:
"In Florida: O got over 99% of Broward County Prescincts"
"In those precincts combined, all in order, Mr. Obama won over 99% of the vote, defeating Mitt Romney 5,392 to... 54. Golly, how lucky! This especially impressive because in precincts L019-L022 (L023 doesn't exist) Mr. Romney did over 14 times better than in L024-L029, and the precinct after, did 30 times better."
Must read the article there about Ohio fraud and PA fraud. MUST READ.

In other news, Aim Surplus has shiny 62 gr Danish M855 .223 in 300-round bricks for $125 ea if you buy 3. It's a little high, but then again, the Wolf stuff really is kinda dirty in an AR's direct gas impingement system... probably works just fine in one of those .223 AKs. Get it while you can.
Good luck and God Bless.

You need to find a way to weave it into grace. Something subtle like "And we thank you, Father, for the bounty you have bestowed upon us. Bounty such as the taxes I pay that allow certain family members to enjoy nearly free health insurance while granting to me the blessing of paying for that and for my own which has now become nearly unaffordable. I beseech Thee to grant upon my family great good health as we cannot afford to be ill since all our money is going for taxes to pay other family members' insurance." Something like that.

Honestly, I think we will just peter along with maybe 1%, 2% growth for quarter after quarter. We may have a negative quarter or two. There is a lot of entrepreneurial *spirit* out there but it is constantly being suffocated by government (especially ObamaCare) so it will struggle to breathe for life, but it won't be entirely snuffed out. So by this time in 2016, I predict that the GDP growth rate will be exactly 2.13% but our debt will be $22 trillion. I wish I were wrong but I don't think I am.

I have the perfect recipe for lemon bars:
1. Get in car.
2. Drive approximately a mile into town.
3. Park (or if you're me attempt to parallel park and you can totally walk to the curb from there).
4. Get out of car.
5. Enter local bakery.
6. Buy all the lemon bars.
This is foolproof.

well I think that is part of it, those who are knowledgeable and smart will do the knowledgeable and smart thing and not participate in the fraud of an Obama economy, but the entrepreneurial spirit and desire is just really strong. there will be people out there who want to make money and start businesses but of course really struggle. and that will continue for years on end.

You're right to a degree.
The thing is we are without a doubt wealthy because of the prospect of gain and mobility, and our resources.
Obama is destroying all 3.
It'll be fun. I am slowly making my peace with stopping the game in my life on trying to gain. I started out in my memory as a child of some means when my grandpa had custody, to poverty with mom, to means with dad to being on my own at 15.
When alone money had little to do with my happiness, BUT since marriage and especially parenthood I cannot deny the joy gains gave me in the sharing of them.
The boy is 13 and I have kept him from want in my life through his mom and my work.

Yup. Insty had a link to someone discussing what's going to be happening to all the legal temp jobs. I'm not talking the secretaries, I'm talking all of the contract lawyers. Considering the political makeup of the vast majority of that group, can't happen to a nicer bunch.
The whole temp industry is going to be annihilated by Obamacare.

I am at odds. My son this week confessed he had dogassed 10 homework assignments this term. I was as calm as could be and showed him math style what he had done. They just are not taking the brutal competitive nature of the human condition to heart.
We are all competitors, that is not to sya we must destroy our foe but even your best friend growing up if you're near 40 was your pacesetter.
These kids.....no perspective like that.

We Doing poetry? Here's a good one, and appropriate to the situation too!
Smokey the Bear heads
into the autumn woods
with a red can of gasoline
and a box of wooden matches.
His ranger's hat is cocked
at a disturbing angle.
His brown fur gleams
under the high sun
as his paws, the size
of catcher's mitts,
crackle into the distance.
He is sick of dispensing
warnings to the careless,
the half-wit camper,
the dumbbell hiker.
He is going to show them
how a professional does it.

"From there Elisha went up to Bethel. Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Have you seen the John Hagee video about the coming "blood moons"? NASA has forecast the first one on Passover, March 2014. A "blood moon," or reddish-looking lunar eclipse signifies world change, for good or bad, via God's celestial bulletin board. There are FOUR of them that will occur in an 18-month period, which also includes a solar eclipse.

I think that Mitt Romney & Paul Ryan did just fine. They were maybe a little too decent. Too polite. But the reason TFG got re-elected is because the monopoly the MFM has over the “undecided” voter. Why don’ the Koch Bros. and Trumpy start a real Conservative network (because Fox really isn’t).
And BTW, my favorite post of the week, went something like:
“Look, if we've learned one thing from this election it's that the single women of America are sex-obsessed freaks whose brains reside in their ‘lady-parts’.”
I donÂ’t have the attribution, because I cut and sent it to Mrs. In an e-mail earlier this week.

Petraeus was head of the CIA. The C.I.freakin' A.
So, let's assume, for the sake of brevity, that he was, indeed, doing the mattress mambo with his "biographer". And, let's also assume that she was digging a little too deep in the "if I tell ya, I'm gonna have to kill ya" kind of emails that he obviously had far too many of.

one thing god does good is subtlety.
Oh, that video was enthralling. Hagee rattled off some Biblical passages that sounded like they included a lot of names, but he says those names were really referring to countries and that the new Caliphate crew in the M.E. is going down as well as Russia and Germany (Germany does $4B of trade with Iran per year). He also said Israel was prophesied to be on its own, meaning the U.S. isn't a super power any longer (or that JEF was re-elected!).

I would imagine that excise taxes on weapons and ammunition will be the first step. They'll be included in some humonguous tax bill that no one will read.
Next will be a Federal requirement that all ammunition sales be required to be signed for with Photo ID being logged. (the irony)
This will allow a follow up seizure detail to be able to fine tune where and who they go to first.
There are many ways to dodge around the 2nd amendment limitations because we've allowed reasonable limitations we've opened the door to any limitations that are deemed reasonable by the state.
Once the UN Treaty is signed (and approved by the Democrat controlled and the emasculated filibusterless Republican Senate) they will then have all the excuse they need to enforce whatever laws they wish. Oh there'll be lawsuits and they'll go on for years but like Obamacare; "It's the law of land" thinking will allow the confiscations and the concomitant violations of privacy and civil rights to proceed in the meantime.
Let. It. Burn.

Let. It. Burn.
Posted by: Jcw46 at November 09, 2012 11:38 PM (SP4jC)
Dude, it takes 2/3rds to pass a treaty in the US Senate. Barky and Reid can jam it through without the filibuster, but 2/3rds won't vote for it, so it fails.
If Reid could just jam any treaty through, he would have done it with Kyoto back in 09.

We're on the Zero for Zer-O plan here. No holiday spending. None. Not a dime.
Also, no dining out. And no shopping at local retailers beyond the basics.
I am printing up on business card stock some neat little notices which say,
"We have been happy and faithful patrons of your establishment in the past. Due to the changed economic and tax circumstances following this year's federal and state elections, though, we regrettably have been forced to curtail our patronage of your business. And do not expect to be returning. We wish that it were otherwise, and wish you the best in future."
I'm going to give a few to my likeminded friend who has been responding to all sales inquires for the last couple of days by saying to the salesman, "The voters just decided to raise my taxes. They didn't give me a raise of income to match. I'm not buying a damn thing."
If enough micromessaging of that sort goes around, Barky isn't going to enjoy his second term very much.

Our local grocery stores give you a bag credit of a few cents if you bring in your own brown-paper bags. They always ask if you want the bag credit to go to you or to the local food bank. re: parallel parking
Used to live in Chicago. Got a lot of practice, and got really good at it. Always made it first try.
Two rules. Pull up almost exactly parallel to the car you're going to park behind. Then, when you back in, you almost cannot turn the wheel too much. Get the back corner of the car that's going to be against the curb, to the curb, asap. Then completely turn the steering wheel back. 1, 2, 3

Howdy.
Finally got a day when I wasn't working and could be conscious. Then I get a call from the storage place my employer refers to as the 'warehouse.' They shipped 16 PCs to the place and there is no room for them in the locker. I already have one small station wagon, one Ford Explorer, and a good chunk of my living room full of excess equipment from banks that ordered far too much stuff for their refresh.
In previous years someone like me was sent around to do site surveys and figure out what the banks should get. Worked pretty well as far as I know but this year they decided it would save money if they just sent forms to the bank managers to fill out. Apparently, the typical bank manager cannot follow simple instructions or count in the two-digit range once they run out of fingers.
I was told Monday that I'd be able to ship out a bunch of stuff today but my last contact from HQ said they still don't have an address for me to send it to. On top of this, they want an inventory down to the serial number level, meaning I have to pull EVERYTHING out of the locker.
So tomorrow is going to be interesting.

Frustrating as it is, it has been a life saver. If were to continue through February instead of ending with this month I'd have my debts completely paid off. As it is, I'll be looking for short term contract work in December. I don't want to take anything long term because CES is coming up in January and working that pays pretty well in addition to getting a free trip to CES. Major bonus to a tech geek like me.
The contract tech sector has been very busy recently. I've felt strange having to ignore so many good job listings. I strongly suspect a lot of companies are rushing to get some stuff done before the end of the year and certain new laws kick in to make the work more expensive.
I'm ready to wait it out. Even if I lost my internet connection I have enough video, books, and audio books backlogged to last me several lean years. Damned if anyone in Hollywood is getting a penny from me if it isn't a direct payment to an individual I find deserving.

A complete ban on all socons strikes me as uncomfortably maximalist. Things will be fine if we are simply able to filter out the vocal idiot socon subset. There are some calm and quiet socons with good message discipline, who are able to function in the modern media environment without a gaffe a minute.
I've been ranting nonstop about socons since the Akin disaster kicked off, but frankly, I'm fine with having socons in the party. They're a key part of the base. And I'm happy to have them stand for office, but we HAVE to have unified unthreatening messaging about certain topics, and they have to stick to it.
Unfortunately, unified unthreatening messaging only works in certain cases.
I'm pretty sure that it would have been possible to come up with a prearranged, prememorized, focus group tested answer for Mourdock that would not have sounded, as his bungled extemporaneous response did, like he thought God intended certain rapes. He doesn't actually think that.
Unfortunately, there is no way to come up with a different and better phrasing for what Akin said -- because Akin MEANT what he said. It wasn't a mangled version of a reasonable position. It was an accurate rendering of his actual views, which are bughouse nuts.

The worst is the check scanners/stampers. This is the first year we've had to replace them. In the past it was left to the people who had the day to day break/fix contract and our sole responsibility was to make sure they worked after the PC had been replaced/imaged.
But they wanted to install a new model throughout this year and so it was added to our inventory. This was good for the techs because it added time on the clock to make up for some streamlining of the process that eliminated some past annoyances.
But I'm having cases where I'm summoned to a branch that has 24 workstation but ordered 38 Paninis. (The maker of the scanner model.) This is especially bad on a Thursday night because several of the leads don't live locally and fly home the following morning for the weekend. This mean all excess equipment must be removed from the site. Now, if somebody else is short on the same item I can just bring them over there and be rid of them. Which is often the case with PCs, monitors, and Addmasters. (Receipt printers using an HP inkjet engine.) But not Paninis. I've got lots and lots of Paninis. A metric shit ton of Paninis.
Special added attraction: Another added responsibility this year is making sure all of the branches have brackets for the PC to sit in off the floor. And again, because no site surveys were done this year (and it wasn't something we gathered data on previously) the info on how many brackets were needed was wildly inaccurate. When they finished San Diego County they had a massive stock remaining that got shipped up to sit in my warehouse and hopefully get used. I have hundreds of the damn things and have only need perhaps three dozen to date. They come in boxes of a dozen that are horribly flimsy. They pretty much disintegrate if opened and a few removed, or just left alone.
This means the damn thing cannot be stacked properly, even if most of them weren't in substitute boxes left over form other equipment. So the mound of brackets is eating up about 70% of the warehouse. These are the items I was promised I'd be able to ship off a portion of today. If I just had a reasonable ten or so boxes none of the other stuff would be as much of a problem.
But I'm sure I'll miss the gig intensely that first time in December when a week passes with no paycheck. At least I have some e-book work to get back to that may produce some revenue some day.

No. It's subcontracting for a big IT firm that works with this major bank. The leads go all over the country installing new servers and such with a crew of local minions. I've been doing it for about five year when it comes into the Orange/LA/Ventura County region, and they've used me for a lot of side work like the site surveys and installing stuff that wasn't available in time for the refresh but after the leads have moved on to another region.
Actually, I'm not sure but Dell may have blackballed me. I got dumped from a big deployment at an insurance titan because I wasn't keeping up with their desired pace. Of course, my work was being measure against guy working the mail room with dozens of identical machines with almost no user data on it, while I was dealing with VPs with tens of gigabytes of files they swore would start WWIII if any of it were lost. One VP had this Java app for spying on her minions that was incredibly finicky about how it was installed and what JVM was on the machine. Plus she had other apps that required a more recent JVM that wasn't compatible with the other app. So much for write once, run everywhere.
I brought in my own switch and four-way KVM to facilitate multi-tasking but there was no way I was going to finish migrations at the rate of guys dealing with generic workstations. So I was dumped from that project. It might also have hurt that I didn't just let it go by when the guy in charge announced one day that Israeli "is an apartheid country."
I've applied to other Dell contract jobs since then and haven't been hired but considering the number of contract jobs I've never heard back about from a wide range of companies it isn't really an indicator of anything but being a small fish in a overpopulated tech pond.

well Uncle Horse is finally sound. He and the kittehs have had a little problem with a raccoon! Grim has decided the .22 is the only answer i had to sadly agree since i cant afford to have it threaten the kittens.
Cecil is FINALLY healthy. Turns out he was poisoned but lucky. the unlucky ones died. about 6 of them. I have four remaining kittens and since things got stressful with the election i have spent my afternoons during and after horse chores watching them play. The one mommy Ditto is completely tame now and has become a total love bug. Cecil is letting me pet him now. Heidi, and the two Ginger kittens are more reserved but watch me, and come running when they see me, but still keep a distance from strangers. Hilariously, they will try to climb in Grim's pants and follow him around the farm, because he protects them from the skunks and raccoons and they seem to have caught on to the fact.
now more vexing news is that Bebe's Boobs Destroy got in a car accident tonight and her car may have been totaled, she was in the ER to have her neck and back looked at, last we talked tonight and she was in some room, after triage with some crazy dude... She just texted me saying Nothing is broken, but shes got whiplash. DAmmit.

Speaking of evil...You'll love this.
Ever hear of Root Boy Slim?
Foster MCKenzie III. From Asheville, NC. White. Preppy. Got kicked out of a bunch of DC preps, including Sidwell Friends. Went to Yale on a scholarship. Was a DKE with GWB. Majored in AfricanAmerican Studies ...in '67.? Started a band. Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band.
Band members boasted that they were never invited for return engagements. The year after MacKenzie graduated, they returned to the DKE house during Yale's homecoming. Bush, who since their departure had become president of DKE, threw them out and banned them from the house.
"Latter-day satiric genius or obnoxious fat guy? You be the judge. Suffice it to say that he was a glitch in the great rock & roll electrocardiogram, but his sophomoric, blues-based mayhem was sometimes funny, even when it was obvious and contrived.:
I saw them '89ish at Charlotte, NC's DoubleDoor Inn (great joint).
Satire: "Rich, White and Republican"...
This is the only vid, of the song I could find. It seems OWS adopted it as a theme. Funny, nonetheless....

It's good to hear that Uncle Horse is on the right side of things. I still seethe that the people who had him had let him get to such a state that putting him down was a serious option.
On a somewhat serious note -- can't horses deal with raccoons? I know they're sneaky, street-savvy (one night I saw one that waited for a "walk" signal to cross near my home), and mean little SOBs, but wouldn't a horse just stomp one?
I had originally thought that your ranch might be near Tujunga, where I spent a summer with a gf during college. At one point, one of the family dogs was poisoned by a neighbor and died as we were trying to get it to the vet. It's an awful, awful thing to know that people can be so horrible.
As far as climbing into Grim's pants -- it's the Alpha Male thing. You didn't think that just applied to humans, did you?
I haven't forgotten the last reason I've been thinking and praying for Bebe (and was thinking of getting an update), but now there's THIS. It sort of leaves you at a sputtering WTF? Lame though it is, let her know that she's in our thoughts and that we hope things start getting better for her soon.

Knowing you all care gets her through. i know when it was hairy with Ellie and Uncle Horse and i was losing sleep over them it was a comfort knowing Morons possibly more virtuous than i were praying for them. The death of both parents is hitting her hard. Theres noting more awful than seeing the people who were your bedrock of comfort all your life turn mortal. Watching my foster dad die was bad enough. Losing my grandparents was hell since we were close. I am not looking forward to losing my parents frail and difficult though they are. I wish i could be more help to Beeb, but i havent done this before like she is with my parents, so i know bupkiss. But my mom has been cool and has offered to talk with her when im stumped.

The main thing to do is to get ones priorities in order.
When my grandfather was dying, I kept getting conflicting information about his status, his prospects, what was going on.....and I finally said, "screw it" and red-eyed it out to Columbus, rented a car and started driving to Parkersburg, WV. There were two major hospitals in town, I guessed the right one on the first try. Bluffed my way in to see him in the ICU, and he was mostly unresponsive, so I just sat with him.
Several hours later, after visiting hours officially started, my grandmother called the ICU to explain why she wasn't there -- turns out, she was in the ER five floors down. The ICU guys told me and I went down to see her (she didn't know I was coming). When I walked in to the ER to help take care of my grandma, it was like the clouds parted and a ray of sunlight shone down upon me, with a deep echo-ey voice saying "you done good."
The first thing I did was make sure my poor, frail granny was stabilized herself, because she was working herself into a state where she was scarcely better off than my grandfather. There is a natural inclination for the healthy to "lend their strength" to the infirm -- but they need to ensure that their own health is priority #1. Once laid low themselves, they can be no good to anyone and are unable to provide more aid and comfort at all.
Once grandma was doing better, I could tell my grandpa that she was ok -- which seemed to markedly lessen his distress. Even though it seems a bit contrary, strictly prioritizing my grandmother's health ended up as a win-win-win-win all around.....even though I could have gone all "bleeding-heart" and let her suffer more to stand vigil with my grandfather.
It's a time for tough choices, and caring ones....and you'll only know it's right if you can look back with pride on things some years later. But it's what it is.

I agree that the fix was in. Not just in FL. West supposedly has a pretty good chunk of change to fight with.
Reince ought to be raisin’ fight money for all the “swing states”.
IÂ’m supposed to believe that Wisconsin, which voted in a Republican Governor, and then after hundreds of millions of dollars poured into a recall effort by the unions and communists in which the Republicans won BY A LARGER MARGIN than the original election, went from SOLIDLY Republican as of June 2012 (the recall election) to a MAJORITY Democrat state in November 2012.
Really?
Show me a verifiable independent vote count and then I might start buying all the "analysis" BS being pumped out by the talking heads. Until I can see actual proof of an honest vote count, all the analysis based on unverifiable voting numbers is just more smoke and mirrors. C'mon, this election was RIGGED.

Now that West is turning things around (President Lincoln, on Grant: "I cannot spare this man -- he fights!") in his own election, he may yet show up The Machine. It would be a supreme irony if the massive effort against Romney were poisoned by the blowback from the West afterthought.

Retirement accounts?
Posted by: Adriane at November 10, 2012 02:58 AM (gh+mp)
Unfortunately, the problem is "I know too much". So.....George Lucas sold Lucasfilms because capital gains is getting taxed out the yin-yang after December 31......so, what do I have with unrealized capital gains? When countries go "full Argentina", they seize private retirement accounts (401K's, IRAs) in return for "guaranteed government annuities"....but withdrawals from such are taxed as ordinary income plus a 10% penalty....how much before the rates get punitive? Do I take the capital gains this year but leave the IRAs vulnerable, in hopes I can pull them out before things get too bad? Or do I eat it with the IRAs and leave the capital gains for another day?
The other sad thing about this is that I'd be really happy with my portfolio if there wasn't an extremist asshole in the White House. But the usual rules of investing don't apply when more money goes into Solyndras than Halliburtons.

eh, don't get your hopes too high. although there is anecdotal eyewitness evidence, and although the inexplicable 4000-vote "recount" screams "fraud", the courts are finding against west and essentially have decided that the way the tally is proceeding is legal and transparent.
west doesn't have any evidence. just some people saying some things. it doesn't look good, and it doesn't look like the courts are going to play ball.

Here's the big thing -- cash is no good.
Equities are based on a company being able to turn a profit....with Obamacare, no company with more than 50 employees will be able to turn a profit, and with "tax on the 1% over $250K", no company with fewer than 50 employees will have a profit (and you can't invest in their equities, anyway).
Bonds are based on underlying value -- but government bonds are based on nonexistent tax revenues, and corporate bonds are based on profits (as above).
Real estate values tend to be inversely correlated with interest rates, based on mortgages. If something is worth $100K, based on 3% mortgages and a rent of $300/month, then it might be worth $50K with a 6% mortgage. If you believe (as I do) that the Fed's ZIRP (Zero Interest Rate Program) is unsustainable, then you wouldn't want to invest in real estate.
If you wanted to get really speculative, you could invest in a kilo or two of a specific rare earth metal -- erbium is useful in 1550nm telecom, for instance -- but which?
And the regular bullion metals are already spiking up in price before you can go shopping for them.
So, what do you do?

Now that the election is over, and I have extra room in my house, I think I'll be setting up my cutting equipment this weekend, and start working on some stones I never got around to cutting before moving. I still have about a pound of rough CZ, 50 carats of peach, and green garnets, a bunch of amethyst, some small sapphires, and spinels, and some other odds and ends....(mostly lab created stuff).
I have my eye on this stone:

The price is good...and depending on the inclusions, I should be able to cut 10 to 12 carat stone from it....as either a Portuguese Round, or a square Barion Cushion. I just have to convince the wife to let me bid on the rock. Anyway, that's my plan for the first post-election/clusterf'ck weekend!

BignJames:
I don't remember, and my book isn't handy....but I believe chromium is responsible for the green color in a lot of different gem stones, and to an extent, is likely responsible for at least some of the green in various types of garnets.

This was inevitable. From the start, Moo-Chelle has had a media cheering section -- and slavish, panting followers -- just like Choom Boy. They use the same "reasoning," too: she's so hip, so connected to Big-Time Celebrities, so adept at taking our attention away from Real Shit (the dying economy, imminent destruction in the Middle East, the end of our Constitution and so much more) and personifying the High Life (never mind who's paying for it).
Oh. And she's black, thereby freeing herself from all accountability.
If the creators of The Jeffersons had been a little more imaginative, we could have seen this on teevee decades ago. It's a sitcom, albeit one that can do infinitely more damage. Movin' on up, baby!
There is some mutant gene in many humans that makes them looooove themselves some dynastic action. Why shouldn't the Obamas become the affirmative action version of teh Kennedys?
Of course we have the Bushes, to our shame. GHWB, Dubya, and now Baby Dubya.
