— DrewM Please stand by while we work on some technical difficulties.

Update: Now with like 100% less content...because sometimes less is more.
Update: CAC here. I have been posting a daily projection on the sidebar for a few weeks now. Today I've modified it so you can see how 10 specific swing states are leaning: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Nevada, Colorado, New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, and Iowa. Should be pretty self explanitory, and their changing colors will correlate in the above number, showing Obama and Romney's electoral totals (and has tossup EV's sandwiched in-between). They are also organized from most Democratic to most Republican within their respective colors. So right now, Pennsylvania is less favorable to Obama than, say, Nevada or Virginia. The rest is pretty self explanatory. I will be updating Monday through Friday.

--Yeah, even though someone has to get the #1 pick, NHL teams seem almost incapable of tanking; the players are too proud. I wish the Jets would have lost out their last two games for a high draft pick but instead they win 4-3 (OT) and lose 5-4 tonight. They still have one game lest against the Lightning but since it is the season-closer at home I think they'll play hard and win for the home crowd.

A man moves from Scotland to the US and attends his first baseball game. After a base hit he hears the fans roaring, "Run! Run!"
The next batter connects heavily with the ball and the Scotsman stands up and roars with the crowd in his thick accent: "R-r-r-un, yah bloody bahstard. R-r-run!"
A third batter cracks a hard liner and again the Scotsman, obviously pleased with his knowledge of the game, screams, "RRRun, yah bloody bahstard, rrrrun, why don't ya???"
The next batter holds his swing at three and two and as the umpire calls,"Take your base." The Scotsman stands up, yelling, "RRRun, ya bahstard, rrrun!" All the surrounding fans giggle quietly so he sits down, very much confused.
A friendly fan, sensing his embarrassment, whispers, "He doesn't have to run, he's got four balls."
The Scotsman stands up in disbelief and shouts, "Wahlk with prrrride, man!"

Feet are the second most ugly (Anus is first most ugly) part of a body. Women want everything about them to be pretty. So they want pretty shoes to hide their ugly feet.
So, to Freud's question "What do women want?" the answer is simple "shoes to hide their ugly feet."

We had some in Buena Park/La Palma/Anaheim called Athenian Burgers. OMG. The char-broiled kind, with lots of fresh lettuce, tomato, onions, etc.
They also always had kick ass fries, with Lawry's Seasoning salt. (Which was the first time I had ever eaten it)
They're all gone now, though.
We do still have Beach Burgers here in HB, which are awesome. Their Coke is SO GOOD and they still serve it Styrofoam cups, so it stays cold and icy for hours.

When I attended Michigan Tech in the 70s, our football team played some of its games against teams from the State Universities of Minnesota -- Winona State and Bemidji State come to mind.
Our homecoming game one year pitted Tech's Huskies against the Bemidji Beavers. They sold a button for the game on which a rampant huskie stood over a beaver that was laying on its back. Encircling this disturbing picture was the slogan, "Go Huskies, Lick the Beavers".
How all that was run past the powers that be, I'll never know, but we thought it was damn funny.

Keep your eye on Jimmie Johns. Their numbers 8 and 9 are delicious. In fact, they've become pretty aggressive against Quiznos. Quiznos was in a little strip mall near hear and doing okay and then JJ's leased the spot next to them, at the end of the building, and opened a drive-thru.
Quiznos is now closed.

In-and-Out vs 5 Guys vs Sonic
Chik-fila isn't national yet.
There are still a lot of regional sub sandwich chains. Subway is everywhere, but lots of competition yet to find out who will be the Burger Kind and Wendy's to Subway's McDonalds.
Quiznos is #2 I guess, but they seem to be failing huge in recent years.
Posted by: Clubber Lang at April 05, 2012 11:05 PM (ZPrif)
--Dallas seems to have almost all: there's a fairly new In-N-Out (I think the grand opening was mentioned here), Chick-Fil-A, and Sonic. Not sure about 5 Guys, but maybe Dallas is in a good geogrphical position for overlapping markets.
There's also regionalization for the "fast casual" Tex-Mex places: Qdoba (mostly Midwest), Baja Fresh (I have only seen them around DC), Chipotle probably most national; they're mostly mid-Atlantic but they're in Dallas too), Moe's (mostly South).

Not the books I bothered to read.
Not that this improved them, mind you. Dreadful stuff. It's the Wars of the Roses compressed, and some fake-o magic nonsense. The only good thing is the willingness to kill major characters.

SF is in its own category of bat-shittiness. I remember when SF was actually a sort of cool place, but then along came the late '60s and all that free love, which then morphed into public bathhouse gay sex, which them moved into the stuff of Zombie-time.
But on average, from an entirely American point of view, weirdos in Japan and Korea and Thailand are just weirder, and more public about it, than your average American scene.
But what the hell do I know? I'm from Alaska, and live in WI, so I am pretty much entirely unschooled in the perversions of either the east or left coast.

The p.c. cops had charged an Oriental grocery owner with various crimes for detaining a shoplifter who returned to the store the same day [tied up his hands and locked in a storage closet or the like] but luckily the Conservative federal government broke their balls to help the guy including amending a citizen's arrest law.

Steamed and baked BBQ pork buns would work really well for this. Super-size them, sweeten them up for the American palate, and you've got something. Probably some money to be made, if one got the recipe just right. Turnip cakes, too, the pastry kind, but you'd need some concealing name for them.

As a Philadelphian, I know my junk food. Almost any local hoagie or pizza shop blows away the chains. Nobody has ever succeeded with a national cheesesteak either...those "Phillys" or "Steak n Cheese" abominations that you buy at Applebee's or places like that just aren't real.
I did enjoy In-n-Out burgers, and Pink's hot dogs, while in SoCal. For a place with a bunch of health nuts, you sure have some good killer grub.

Ok, so maybe a few probing questions are in order for the new potential significant other. For example, are you on medication? Do you need to be?
So, asking for the written results of a complete psych eval, prior to meeting, is a good idea? Maybe should include a blood/urine lab workup as well to verify what meds she may be on.

There are plenty of ways to crash servers running unix, and it can be as simple as a bad piece of code tossed into the startup directory, or a shoddy cron job, or a debugging log set to collect all data, or a piece of software coded to run too many threads. It doesn't tend to fail gracefully either, so if you are running a db on it, you better pray you've been backing up regularly.
Servers don't tend to run any kind of AV in the communications world, depending on tight firewalls & user restrictions, so if a hacker put his mind to it and found an avenue in (via a stolen pw or a compromised patch update), all sorts of damage can be done.

Good news for all car fans (From Hot Air):
"The Volt, which cost nearly $40,000 before a $7,500 federal tax credit, could take up to 27 years to pay off versus a Chevrolet Cruze, assuming it was regularly driven farther than its battery-only range allows. The payback time could drop to about eight years if gas cost $5 a gallon and the driver remained exclusively on battery power."
Probable translation: ...the driver did not buy any gasoline for 8 years
"The Lundberg Survey, which tracks fuel prices, said in March that gas prices would need to reach $12.50 a gallon for the Volt to make sense purely on financial terms. It said the Leaf would be competitive with gas at $8.53 a gallon."
Assuming the JEF wins in November, how long till $12.50/gal? Summer 2014?

My dad would go off on these mumbling, half-chanted riffs sometimes when I was growing up, and we always sort-of blew them off as eccentricity. Then my mom found Marty Robbins' "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" in a remainder bin, bought it because the titles sounded familiar, and we realized with some shock that these ramblings were actual published songs....as "sung" by someone with no ear for pitch or rhythm.
Weirdest thing......we had always assumed it was some sort of free-association or something.

What Zimmerman did, from a tactical perspective, was stupid. He should have stayed in his vehicle,
That's about the only wrong thing he did. The kid knew he was being followed. And normally I'd never rely on timely cops, but how far away could they be for a nice gated community.

Agreed 100%. At first I was peeved at him for making an obvious tactical blunder that ended up putting all of us CCW permit holders in a bad light, but it sure is hard to stay annoyed at someone who is getting raked over the coals. Now I just feel sorry for him.
FWIW, when you are beating someone into the ground you are committing a deadly force attack. I'll bet Martin did not know he was doing this and I'm sure the kid never meant to cause permanent injury, but you could fill a graveyard with guys who have died in barfights just like this, and you could fill a prison with the guys who never meant to kill them that way. It very well could have gone the other way, and it would have been Zman going to the morgue and Martin going to the big house for murder 2...and we wouldn't be talking about it at all, except in concealed carry classes where Zman would be used as a case study in how things can go horribly wrong in an instant.
And now I'm really out. Later roonz and roonettez!

Having seen the maps of the neighborhood, there are a bunch of walkways. To try to keep an eye on someone from a vehicle just wouldn't work. So Zimmerman followed along the walkways. The problem seems to be that Treyvon knew the walkways well enough to catch Zimmerman away from his vehicle.
It's obviously quite tragic when a young person dies -- their life is not yet written, and could include great things if enough pages get filled-in. But this whole affair stinks of the "if it's so obviously A, why are you lying your ass off to say it's A?" syndrome. It's part and parcel of the AGW, alternative fuels, voter fraud ain't a problem but union vote fraud is, I can't pay $1 for a condom because my church won't finance an insurance plan that pays for contraception, BS industry.

On the night I brought it up the folks here were sparring about the zimmerman/travon case -- and yet no one here claimed to have witnessed it, or even to have talked to someone who had. Why then should any of us have an opinion other than "I don't know, yet." Notice the "yet" -- I am not saying that anyone here is incapable of forming a high quality opinion -- I am only saying there is no rush to do so.
Those of you that have been reading my rants for a while know that I hate the corporate media. I hate them because they lie just to make a profit. I hate them because they try to stir up trouble among people who do not deserve the abuse. I have learned that there is absolutely no point for me to try to form any useful opinion based on anything that has been handled or soiled by the corporate media.
So, I am gently asking folks to consider these thoughts. Are you still carrying a habit that is now outdated -- the habit of thinking the media is not lying, and you can rely on their input enough to form an opinion? If so, I urge you to consider that you do not have to grant them that power in your life.

So when the story first came out I also told people to suspend judgement until we had some actual facts. My own opinion on the case has formed slowly based on the facts the MSM withheld or buried coming to light.

And, since then, we've seen such mendacity -- NBC's "oopsie" edit; the selective pictures; the "who screams for I scream" stuff -- the MSM is doing its best to call forth the mob. They are worthless, corrupt, and entirely biased. The Mainstream Media is nothing more than press agents for the Democratic party. Anyone who believes otherwise is seriously deluding themselves.
Posted by: StuckOnStupid at April 06, 2012 02:32 AM (R5yLq)
========
I quit reading the local rag about 15 years ago. The reasons I did were: 1) if I don't start my day with people deliberately trying to piss me off, I spend a lot less time pissed off. Someone once worded it "if they have the choice between shedding light or applying heat they will apply heat every time." The media is only interested in your glands. If they actually encounter your mind it is merely a coincidence.
2) in my daily life I came to know a lot about a few stories well in advance of when the media became interested and started with their stories. It was amazing how they could take individual facts and rearrange them into a barely recognizable, context free, mishmash that while not untrue certainly wasn't the story either. It occurred to me then that if I knew something about maybe 2% of what they printed and they always had that so wrong then I had to be an idiot to let them influence my opinions on the other 98% of what they printed. In other words, I now completely believe I am better off ignorant than misinformed.
3) I came to realize the media has a problem in that they think they know things that they do not. Really it is a problem of english words being used for several different meanings. For example, if they were to interview me about some of the things I do we could have a long conversation about stress and strain. Of course, I would be talking about stress when I mean force divided by an area (such as PSI in your car tires), and by strain I would be talking about how the length of some object changed when subjected to stress. What would happen next is the reporter would write a story about how much I hate my job because of all the stress and strain. In short, they think they know what people are telling them when they don't have the education or context to get it right.
4) they became so brazenly leftist that I decided to deny them my money. They may always be rich, but they will be so without my contribution.
Since then, the media has only deteriorated.

It came about in several ways - 1) the whole 60 Minutes ambush shit where they convinced themselves that all private businesses are evil. 2) government always pays someone to print pamphlets and hang around and be a spokesperson -- so they give lazy journalists an easy way to make their deadlines without actually doing their job. 3) cuz of the 1st amendment, the media doesn't actually know what the government is like. If the rest of us had an amendment that said the parts of government that are corrupt or incompetent had to leave us alone we would probably have a different opinion, too.

As such, you can poke at 'em a bit, 'cause they all have quirks. Gabe has a nice legal mind, does a good eye-opener post in the am, and is an all-around good guy.....but starts with the heavy panting whenever gay marriage is mentioned. CAC brings the info sixteen ways from Sunday.....but is such a data wonk that he regularly blows the page margins. Even Ace has his double-posts and interminable film reviews. The whole crew is a bunch of flawed human beings with odd touches of genius.....and somehow it melds together in a way greater than the sum of its parts.
I hope TN is back soon. Rdbrewer has a great eye for headline links and does nice posts. DrewM and DiT bring regional [read: "not NYC"] perspectives. Vic wakes us up. Maet does a lot of work with his ONTs, and LauraW has a nice hump. We'd all be poorer without ALL of the cobs. I hope they know how much we appreciate them even while we give them grief.

It was third base by Tuesday.....but that was quite a bit ago and it seems like things have gone quite a bit further in the pairing-up process. And, somehow, I doubt they'll want to analyze the past play-by-play to the extent necessary to settle wagers.

Had fun yesterday scewering the democrat party on my gay lib friends FB page. By the time I was done I had listed 200 years of democrats racism & lynchings up to and including Zimmerman.
The dems charging anyone with racism is like Hitler accusing everyone else of anti-semitism.

When I lived there back in the 70s I had it from people who would know that if he was ever released he would be put down like the rabid dog he is.
The only reason he is still alive is a temporary POS ruling from the Supreme Court that halted the death penalty and ultimately caused all the death sentences to be commuted to life.
