Open Thread: Longmire! [OregonMuse]
— Open Blogger

In a thread a week or so ago, some of the moronettes' hearts were going pitty-pat over the lead actor in a new A&E show called Longmire, about a sheriff in a remote county in rural Wyoming. I've watched a couple of episodes, and as a detective/crime drama, it's not bad.

So this is for the moronettes:

It also has that hot chick from Battlestar Galactica, so there's that.
[Update] Sackhoff pic below the fold:

22 I've watched 2 episodes so far and I see a obnoxious pattern that's killed the show for me.

The pattern: horrific crime, all signs point to the indian reservation, "White man took our land, now thinks we are criminals," whoops! it's actually whitey's fault. Gosh dern, those indians are stoic folk jus' tryin' to make their way in the white man's world...A'huck!

The pathetic PC shit is to be expected with most H-wood crap but this is truly lazy writing.

30 Oh and it might be fun for gun enthusiasts. You get to play "BS on That" every episode.

The Dog Soldiers episode: Longmire and the deputy drive to 'The Rez' and stop outside some trailers. Trailers on one side of the dirt road, on the other is a fence and an empty field. No one standing in the field.

Longmire approaches a trailer. We hear a shotgun rack behind Longmire and bingo, there's an angry Injun holding ))) a double barrel shotgun? (((( behind him. Just appears outta nowhere. The fuck?

A very interesting show, with some genuinely quirky characters.  Also, I enjoy shows set in the contemporary rural west.  I am reading the first book, which is in some ways darker.

The flashbacks and bits related to the death of his wife have caught my interest.  The are carefully integrated.  Hopefully they are explained in the books, or will be by the end of the summer run.   All the solutions I can come up with are dark indeed.

34 I guess it's a tribute to the makeup and costuming people on BSG that they made Katee Sackhoff look far less attractive than she does normally. There was an early episode in which she wore a party dress and did a good job of being awkward and unaccustomed to it as the character. Check out her cameos on Big Bang Theory for how she looks in proper Hollywood glam prep.

She didn't write the show but she executed well on her assigned material. If you want to point a finger, go looking for Ron Moore. He was the one who didn't have a plan.

It gets a little weird for me because she also looks a lot like one of my sisters at that age.

I thought the show had some potential, but then I noticed the trusted mystic Indian sidekick (in spiritual tune with the tribe and Mother Nature) and concluded I had been there and done that.  The Dog Soldiers episode reinforced my conclusion that the easy way to write a TV script is to have a healthy dose of evil whites screwing over the people of color.

I like 'Longmire'.

I've watched every episode....more than once.

It's nice to see a show that's....a) Not another damn reality show....b) Is not another big-city cop show.....and c) Filmed in a setting other than East Coast or West Coast....in other words, a show about flyover people.

There are a few little details, that reflect some liberal sentiments being applied.

But for the most part....it's a great show, imo.

People noticed a big bandage on Longmire's hand.

So, he was asked, more than once....."Hey, what happened to your hand?"

Longmire replied each time....."Hurt it".

Heh.

He reminds me of the big guy I'm married to.

That seems to be some viewers takeaway on it.

But for me.....I'm seeing more of a....

'Watch the unflappable western sheriff, deal with the professionally aggrieved and pissy Indians, and look after their best interests in spite of their crankiness towards him'.

Longmire's best friend in an Indian....played by Lou Diamond Phillips.

He doesn't live on the reservation.

He owns a bar, in town....Longmire's town.

And he often goes to bat for Longmire, with the pissy reservation Indians.

59 I like Longmire.  The Indians are treated as people, but ones that have a community hostile to the larger white community.  It's pretty clear that the reservation police are corrupt, for example.

Yes it has a some lefty quirks, but compared to many other shows they aren't obnoxious.  The show doesn't treat the community as a bunch of dumb rednecks who need to be enlightened.

61 Yes, Longmire is great. I really like that show, and the main actor is amazing in the part. He really plays the Matt Dillon rough western detective well, with a bit of a softer side to him to make all the girls go gooshy inside. And the female lead manages to be capable and tough without being obnoxious. I even like the jerk rival to Longmire, even though he's an ass.

62 And the res indians are sometimes victims of bad guys, and sometimes they're the bad guys. Sometimes they are real jerks, and sometimes they're good people. The bad guy in the main "indians as victims" episode was... a government social worker. Yeah, real PC leftist.

The Longmire / Branch conflict has been done well so far.  They work together, but you can tell there is tension because Branch is challenging Walt's leadership at the same time that he has to take orders from the Sheriff.  Branch is the standard young buck who thinks he knows everything, while Walt has decades of experience to draw on.  Vic doesn't come off as obnoxious, just someone used to the crime and tempo of a big city police department who is now stuck out somewhere that she hates.  Heck, I even like Ferg.  He's clumsy and out of his depth, but not completely incompetent.  Their interactions hint at a lot of small town politics without being blatant about it.

I think that Longmire has already figured out that that's who's sleeping with his daughter.

I like Longmire.  I like that they're always out of breath up in the hills, lol.   I thought I caught a whiff of "white people bad" in a few episodes, but it's not quite the same as L & O lib propo. For instance, last week the bad guys were white, but they *were* the statist government drones, and one of the last shots of the show was the wife of the couple who wanted to adopt the little Indian boy sitting sadly on the swing, holding the shoe he left behind.  Those were "good' white people who were caught up in something outside their control. (My husband thought she was Native American...I wasn't sure. But the husband was definitely white.) Anyway, they can't have every episode featuring an Indian as the bad guy. And let's face it, interesting crimes don't happen once a week in small towns in Wyoming, so that right there is unrealistic.

I'm looking forward to reading the books.

And Nick ("Whose porn is this?") Searcy....you ARE the sexy man on the show. (Okay, one of them.)

72 Longmire is filmed in New Mexico. The scenery is grand and the show is ok. The PC aspects haven't bothered me yet but I have a long fuse. Its formulaic but I'll give the show a few episodes before I decide to keep watching it.

73 In Dogsoldiers, you morons are forgetting the white lady's Indian confederate who was working from inside the Rez. The opening scene was of the Dogsoldier beating the snot out of him. Also, it was established at Walt arrested the Rez's last police chief for corruption and he is in prison. Far cry frow all whites are bad and Indians good. I think its a great show in terms of acting, directing and written dialogue. however, the plots are the weakest link and is holding this show back a bit....but is enjoyable.

74 I watched the pilot. It had some good points and some promise but I haven't watched it since for a few reasons: The deputy called the 2 guys who found the body (in the pilot opening) "wingnuts". I took it to mean "right wing gun nuts" in the context of the story. I could be wrong but other things strengthened my feeling: The sheriff didn't seem to know anything about rifle calibers and didn't have a clue what a Sharps rifle was. No real Westerner, let alone a sheriff would be so deliberately stupid. Then, as if to solidify his peaceful and non-gun culture bonafides the sheriff has to go tell someone their spouse is dead. It takes him 10 minutes and he agonizes to get any words out at all. Watching the scene, you didn't empathize with his pain and discomfort, no, you watch him and think, "Is this guy actually retarded and the show is really about a retarded sheriff?".

75 "'Then, as if to solidify his peaceful and non-gun culture bonafides the sheriff has to go tell someone their spouse is dead. It takes him 10 minutes and he agonizes to get any words out at all."
He just lost his wife less than a year ago, so he's a bit tore up about that. I agree it was a bit overdone but he is seriously a mess right now because of that, so it wasn't without reason.
The gun stuff though, that's just ignorant writers, I agree.

79 I'm just happy Katee Sackhoff is working. Kinda bummed that basically she got handed a uniform and a gun and told to act a little like Starbuck. Then again, A&E might well be hoping to attract the rabid BSG fan base to watch Katee.

Personally, I'd like to see Michael Trucco (Anders from BSG) get a solid TV series. I met him at DragonCon a couple years ago, and he was one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet.

80 decent show actually. It's like one of those 1970s, early 80s type of mystery shows. You actually see the lead character use their brain and piece things together themselves. None of that CSI stuff. Good ole fashioned detective work. Between Longmire and Dallas it feels like the 80s all over again.

84 Sakhoff isn't hot, in my book, she's more the country girl who you wouldn't mind but is kind of rough looking. I've known a lot of girls like them, and usually they come across rough but are sweethearts deep down. I'll take them over the beauty queen any day.
