Open Thread Sat. Morning 07-21-2012 [OregonMuse]
— Open Blogger

This open thread is brought to you by statism, the philosophy of kings. Statism, where everything that is not mandatory is forbidden. Statism, embraced by both political parties, only in different degrees. Statism, where your betters get to tell you what to do, where to do it, and who to do it with. And while you do it, they get to watch.

It's for your own good.

I am Michael Bloomberg and I approve this message:

2 The rest of the country sees the publicized crap that Bloomberg has done and wants to do to NYC. But he has screwed up so many other things too. Traffic patterns in Manhattan (and to a lesser extent the rest of the city) are being manipulated at the whim of unelected bureaucrats sitting in planning offices. Whole streets are closed and made into pedestrian walkways. Three lane streets are narrowed to one lane with a stop sign. Bus lanes, bike lanes, etc have destroyed traffic flow in the entire city.

And don't get me started about parking!

5 I watched Downfall the other night and one line struck me kind of sad and funny at the same time. The insane one was confessing his lack of empathy for the German civilians that would have to endure the loss of the war. He said essentially screw then, they elected me. I wonder if the JEF feels the same way?

8 Years ago, when some huge lawsuit against tobacco companies was going on, a co-worker told me that we would end up with do-gooders going after fat and sugar in our diets. I really thought she was crazy. If you had told me that the mayor of any large city would outlaw the sale of large sodas I would never have believed it. What the hell is wrong with New Yorkers that they tolerate this kind of patronizing attitude on the part of their overlords?

Problem now is that the young are sowing oats with no consequences for where the seeds may fall.   This level of hedonism has never existed before at the levels that it does today, and it has the capacity to totally destroy any rational survival instinct that previous generations were required to have.

Several examples:  Free contraceptives, free abortion, "Chirren" eligible for insurance via parent's policy until they're 26, free food stamps, extended unemployment, etc.  When the wheels come off, I estimate the two youngest (adult) generations have no capacity to survive.

Once upon a time, it was the most vibrant city in America, full of all kinds of people from every corner of the globe pursuing every imaginable kind of endeavor. New York City was the very symbol of freedom all over the world. Ayn Rand practically idolized it.

25 Time to trot out the Ayn Rand quote from Atlas Shrugged: "Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We WANT them broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against--then you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power and we mean it. You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one MAKES them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted--and you create a nation of law-breakers--and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Rearden, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with."

20 On an ONT a while back there was a link to "The 50 Best Movies You Never Saw", ...

I was surfing around last week and started watching a movie I'd never heard of.....

'Interstate 60'

It was great.....a feel-good type of movie.

It had cameos of a lot of good actors....Kurt Russell, Gary Oldman, Chris Cooper, Christopher Lloyd, Ann Margaret....and a lot of others.

The main character was James Marsden....the guy who played Scott Summers/Cyclops in the X-Men movies.

It pokes fun at Lawyers, Liars, Statism, Hypocrisy, Elitism....and a lot of the things that we conservatives rail about.

Definitely worth a watch, if you're wanting to see something that makes you smile.

Holmes may have been crazed.  I'm leaning toward methodical and malevolent.  But, just in case he was crazed, because there are insane people walking around this country right now with access to guns, all Americans should be given anti-psychotic medications beginning asap.  For the children.

My understanding of Colorado Law regarding concealed carry, is that the only places it is illegal to carry is courthouses and schools.  Private businesses can post a "No Handguns Allowed" sign, but all they can legally do is ask you to leave the premises (if they find you are carrying). If you refuse to leave the premises you can be charged with trespassing but not with a handgun offense. This comes up at places like hospitals. The emphasis on concealed carry in venues like movie theaters is therefore the 'concealed' part. (NOTE: I am a Colorado resident with CCW permit, not a lawyer)

I'm an ex-cop, in a darkened theater with complete chaos and smoke, it will be nearly impossible for a person to get a clean shot on him with a handgun. The only thing you could possibly do is during said chaos, if your wits are about you, get into a position to where you could attack him from behind. Still might lose, but to me that would be the only way.

Both seem to be sadly lacking in nearly all politicians these days. I expect it of Democraps, but I used to have hope for Republicans. It is sort of like why no one ever asks a lib what the correct tax rate for the wealthy should be and what the minimum definition of wealth is? We never ask a Repub pol what is a fundamental core Constitutional issue that is worth defending no matter what the political cost might be!

The problem is 1) very few people even seem aware of the loss of liberty 2) the hills are usually more like speedbumps than mountains 3) the legislators are not interested in dying on ANY hill,  not matter how small.

Combined with the "ratchet effect" mentioned above and we get ever-growing statism.

The situation at the department will either be diffused, in which case there's nothing to watch, or will result in tragedy, in which case I don't want to witness it.

I deeply resent the circus atmosphere and will never, ever forget FNC running their affiliate interview with the father of the 6 year old girl who was killed.

He couldn't even face the camera and yet still she persisted.

Later, there was a shot of him standing in the hospital doorway, backlit, with his head in his hands. That shot told more than anything that bitch managed to get out of him in her "interview".

When a government suspends habeas corpus in federal statute thereby abrogating a fundamental ensrhinment of liberty as established under the constituton and bill of rights and as affirmed through legal precedent over hundreds of years, that's when eyes should have went wide open.  Not to mention the fact that federal statute makes imprisonment without trial, charges and or any such due process including rendetion of American citzens inside and outside of the country legal.

When God is completely divorced from thought, then rights established as inalienable are supplanted by men who will always organize and amass power, which brings us back to the very reason we were established as a Constitutional Republic affirming inalienable rights under the forerunning document, the Declaration.

@104A question. Do CC permits demand a background check that would reveal a mental health problem? If so, perhaps mandating CC would flush out individuals who are on the edge, so to speak.

***********************

In CO, CC permits are issued by the county sheriffs with a required training course, local sheriff's background check and an FBI  criminal  background check  and some 'fees'.  Unless your mental health problem had resulted in a criminal record I do not believe it would  be flagged.  It is hard to police somebody's  mental thoughts prior to the act, even if the  thoughts  are deranged.

Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at July 21, 2012 10:56 AM (hgSh3)

120 It depends on what level of armor he had.  A level 2/2a typically worn by police is good against most handgun rounds.  A level 3 is good against weaker rifle rounds but is quite bulky and uncomfortable.

It doesn't need to be criminal.  Federal law prohibits if you've been adjudicated incompetent.  IOW, all it takes is a judge to send you to the loony bin.  The didn't need to be a crime per se involved.

The Brady Bill included many millions of dollars in assistance to states to get their mental health records tidied up to where they could be used to enforce this provision when NICS came online.  I don't think that money was ever spent though.

Its something the buyer has to fill out for every gun purchase.  FFL's are required to keep the 4473's on hand for as long as they're in business.  If they go out of business, they're required to turn them over to AFT.

I still have questions about Holmes motivation.  For him to commit his massacre on the anniversary of Anders Behring Breivik's massacre, and for that fact to go virtually unmentioned and unnoticed yesterday, is passing strange, given the fevered attempt to immediately link Holmes actions to The Tea Party,Rush, etc.

It seems that everyone is relieved to just declare him a lone, comic-obsessed, game-playing wacko with no political axe to grind.  Indeed, to even speak of possible political motivations right now is universally considered to be crass.  Have they even gotten inside his booby-trapped apartment yet?  There seems to be nothing else on him other than the common habits and problems of American males his age.

Is this America's answer to Anders Behring Breivik?  Holmes mimics Breivik's tactics and weaponry, yet does it all without political statements or politically-motivated executions?  Is he nothing but a grisly cartoon version of Breivik?  Maybe theres more to the picture, which we'll find out in the coming days, and I'm not looking for some bludgeon with which to beat the other side should Holmes turn out to ba a mirror-image of Breivik, but I think there's a deeper anger at work in Holmes which has not surfaced in the news yet.

"In a country where the sole employer is the State, opposition means death by slow starvation. The old principle: who does not work shall not eat, has been replaced by a new one: who does not obey shall not eat."

155 @ 142 - Yeah but they popped methamphetamines before they walked into the bank. They weren't feeling fear or pain.

The North Hollywood bank robbers weren't just armored. They were also loaded to the gills with drugs that took before all of their robberies. Helped them maintain a high level of stoicism where any normal person would have collapsed.

The same drugs made them a bit stupid and unable to react well when everything didn't go exactly to plan.

Don't mistake information overload for activity. Not only do we have vastly more real-time info than just a few years ago (compare the difference in coverage of the two Iraq invasions in that regard: what was considered remarkable in the first was run of the mill by the second) we also have far more detail. Things that were formerly left unreported or clouded in euphemism are now regular fare.

Look at old newspapers. Most of us can recall when many of the stories of mayhem in a faraway land might take place days or even weeks before there was coverage here. Yesterday morning my mother was reading the LA Times and I noticed the biggest story of the days wasn't there on the front page. It happened a few scant hours too late for the print cycle. The first she'd heard of a story I'd been following since about 2 AM was when I told her about it, as she hadn't turned on the TV yet that day and barely uses her PC for anything that would have brought the story to her attention.

The world is pretty much as it has always been. In general the US has far lower violent crime right than in previous recent decades. But every little incident gets national coverage, ensuring we know every time somebody somewhere gets shot, even if it is actually a much rarer event than it once was.

158 @159 Pfft!
You got PWNED by the facts and now whine about "drugs".

"Drugs" can't prevent a person from being "knocked down"

I remember the North Hollywood shootout.
You are dumber than a Dumocrat if you think a theatre-goer with a handgun would have more effect on "the joker" than did police officers with heavy weapons have on the bank robbers.
