— Open Blogger The other thread was getting lengthy, so here is a fresh one where we can complain about the 9ers-Pats game being pre-empted by TFG and his politicizing of the Newton murders.
And I'm a 9ers fan, so: Go 9ers!

London, though I had initially lobbied for either Berlin or Prague. My wife didn't want to deal with language barriers, and I also think watching a lot of Luther, Top Gear, and Sherlock has been rubbing off. I was there about almost 20 years ago on a school trip, so I didn't get to see much that I wanted to check out. If I play my cards right, I might get to go to the Tank Museum at Bovington.

Yet these idiots don't say a word about Gun Control people using this tragedy for their agenda... even before the bodies are out of the school...

Definitely going to British Museum and Victoria & Albert, as well as the standard issue historic/tourist sites (Westminster, Tower of London, Hampton Court, etc.). May be going to Canterbury or Dover instead of Bovington for a day trip, but I don't think we'll be doing too much outside the M25 beltway. I looked into going to a Arsenal/Chelsea/West Ham United to see if the soccer games are any better over there, but I don't have a minimum of $200 to drop on tickets for two. Plus, I don't feel like getting punched in the brain. I'm a bit bummed that I can't bring my pocket knife with me, though.

If you haven't already considered Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, would definitely encourage a look (if the Russian mobs are still in control, at least). Wonderful spas, architecture, laces, garnets, amber, and dining, and comparatively inexpensive. Unless "across the pond" is limited to the UK.
Then again, "Dishonored" is quite satisfying...

On a related note, has any one been to the Imperial War Museum? Might go there if I go to Canterbury instead of Bovington. I checked out the website, and it seemed like the place is awash with socially conscious/politically correct crap instead of, you know, uniforms, guns, tanks, etc. What kind of world do we live in where the French have more straightforward military museums (Hotel des Invalides, which sold French Foreign Legion coloring books) than the Brits?

Are Obama and Holder still hiding behind Executive Privilege regarding their roles in the "Fast & Furious" scandal?
Say, aren't there over 300 Mexicans DEAD because Obama and Holder forced American gun dealers to arm Mexico's most violent drug gangs?
I don't need lectures on gun control from people who are accessories to over 300 murders. Wise King Barky has blood on his hands. Hiding behind murdered children and a compliant press will never change this fact.

Currently doing the no-kill run on my first attempt (I gave up on not getting seen or spotted a while ago). I'm on the mission with the twins in the brothel. I figure I'll go all stabby in the second go-round. So far, my only complaint is the quasi-Lovecraftian flavor of the whole thing (the Outsider, the fucked-up whales, etc.). Why does everything have to be Cthulu-y? Can't any one be more original in the despairing darkness department?

In London, I recommend Apsley House, the Duke of Wellington's mansion which is across from Hyde Park Corner. It is filled with art (present of the King of Spain), commemorative china sets from the heads of Europe, his boots, his horse's saddle, and all sorts of neat stuff, including a huge (about 15 ft. long) solid silver centerpiece in the dining room. Also a giant nude staue of Napoleon which sits by the stairway and which all of his officers thought hilarious. If you like the history of the Napoleonic Wars (Sharpes Rifles for example) you would like this.
Dover has an incredible view, but make sure unless you are in good shape you take a cab or tram to the top. It sits high on the cliffs. Having been a continuous military installation from Roman times there is a Roman lighthouse, a Norman castle, Tudor homes, super walls wich overlook the town and the English channel (and on a clear day you can see France) plus the WWII secret installations. It's quite spectacular.
Canterbury's center is truly medieval, and many of the shops are in buildings which date from the 1400's. The Cathedral is beautiful and HUGE, much bigger than Westminster Abbey. There is an area which was the former site of Thomas Beckett's shrine. Thomas More's head is buried in a Norman church on the outskirts of the city center, because his daughter was married to someone from Canterbury. Also there is an ancient hostel for pilgrims which is interesting. It's a pretty place with a lot of history.
For a day trip I would recommend Dover, but make sure you get there early. There are several military museums which are worth seeing as well as the things I mentioned. Canterbury would take more time,.
I was just at these places in June, so I was interested to see you were interested in the same sites.

It was also peaceful in 1980, when I was there for a semester. I remember walking with a group of British students through Hyde Park after dark and marveling that none of them seemed concerned in the slightest about muggers (you did have to watch out for pickpockets, but that's par for the course anywhere you travel). I couldn't imagine doing the same thing in Central Park.
Nowadays, I understand it would be just as foolhardly and dangerous to walk in Hyde Park after dark (even with a group) as it is in any American city.

--The war museum in --of all places-- Austria was impressive when I visited in '07, and the Austrians had not won a war in almost two centuries. Posted by: logprof at December 16, 2012 09:32 PM (LMgaP)
The Brits strike me as being extremely embarrassed about their imperialist past. Historian Niall Ferguson drew a lot of criticism when he published "Empire" for daring to suggest that the British Empire was not an entirely bad thing.
Whenever I've read the Guardian's comments section (something I try to avoid), I've thought that the hatred American lefties have for America pales compared to the loathing British lefties feel for much of their own country's history and traditions. In a Telegraph thread, I once praised Churchill, only to be attacked by numerous lefty trolls, who were quick to tell me that if I wasn't an ignorant Yank, I'd know that Churchill was The Second Worst Leader the UK ever had (with Maggie being the absolute worst).

Looks like they see it more as something to make fudge in though.
