Verified by NASA's recent Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter:
By comparing images of the sites taken at the same angle at different times of day, they could compare them, and the shifting shadows would reveal the height and shape of objects on the ground (see the video below). When they applied this to the Apollo sites, there were what looked like the flags ... at five of them. The sixth, Apollo 11, had no flag. It looks as though Aldrin was right.

Full disclosure: I've never seen the movie but I have heard about it and seen parodies/riffs on it for years. But based on everything I've read and know about people, I'd say yes - they got it wrong.

Clearly, Reginald Rose, who wrote the original teleplay as well as the film script, intended the unnamed defendant-we'll just call him The Kid, as the jurors generally do-to be innocent. There isn't some hidden twist that nobody's ever noticed until now. But in attempting to make the scenario as dramatic as possible, Rose inadvertently and unwittingly made it almost impossible for The Kid not to have killed his old man. Is he guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt? No. If he's innocent, however, then so was O.J. Simpson, using pretty much the exact same arguments.
When you consider what would have to be true for all the evidence to be present and yet the kid to NOT be guilty, you can see why most juries would have convicted.

Yeah, the lander brought its oxygen with it. So it burned the oxygen and hydrogen (I think the fuel was hydrogen) and blew the gas (mainly water) all over the lunar surface.

Can you imagine what the engineering/crew meetings at NASA look like now?
My guess:
A 60 slide power point presentation that was approved by the section chief and presented by the engineer's division manager to the astronaut division lead.
Neither the engineer nor the crew would be invited, as the the interaction between them would be feared to go off track. It might lead to actual questions and concerns, which might solve some problems, but would obviously affect the successful completion of the meeting by the managers.

There's a great line in that "From the Earth to the Moon" HBO miniseries. The engineers are building/designing the lunar lander, and were eliminating some of the windows, so one guy was concerned about them using one set of windows and having to change their orientation through it all. The response he got back was "They're astronauts. They're smart, they'll figure it out"

Being from CO, a (science club?) field trip was to Martin-Marietta. Some of the engineers told us how happy they were when the first Venus lander entered Venusian atmosphere and everything was *green* and beautiful...and then they realized the cameras weren't adjusted correctly. They were also very angry that there'd been no more manned flights in so long. Would hate to think of what they have to say now.

DC did a piece on this back in the 70s as a filler item when 100+ issues with mostly repeats and a single new story was common. Scorpion and owl are two of the menagerie I recall. None of them was engaging enough to bother creating a cross-dimensional continuity to keep them up.

Hal Jordan was less of a public figure than Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne, so he didn't need to pretend as much. I can't really recall any old GL stories where it was a serious issue. More like a cop not wearing his badge when off duty but still having ID in his wallet if something came up.
Jordan was a rarity in the Corps, most of which didn't wear masks and were publicly know as Lanterns on their home worlds. There must have been some public support in some cases but I imagine the Guardians have rules about a GL having no other boss but them.

And yeah, both Singer X-Men movies used mutants as a metaphor for homosexuality, and X2 took it to another whole level of annoying. Still, they were pretty good movies despite that.
What bothered me is that they put one of my favorite X-Men in X2 then dropped him for X3 without even bothering to explain a thing. Where'd Nightcrawler go? And Colossus was just a bit part, along with Kitty Pryde. I guess I should just be happy Jubilee was a face in the crowd.

They did that for most of the mutants in Evolution. It was essentially the X-men as high schoolers with a few exceptions of making those teachers. They were likely more consistent to the comics though than the X-Men series from the 90's. Such as with Rogue absorbing Cyclop's power. In the 90's series she absorbs it and can't control the blasts just like Cyclops. However in Evolution when she absorbs his powers, she has full control over them. And you may not like Nightcrawler as a teen, but at least he wasn't relegated to just being in two or three episodes like the 90's version.

I recently went through Chris Claremont's entire 17 year run on X-Men. Wow. It was pretty amazing and makes me really appreciate how bad the X-Men movies were and how bad the comics for the last couple decades have been.

Inevitable problem with the X-men license: A standing army of characters and the original class is largely unfamiliar to those who aren't comics geeks.
Avengers presents the same problem but they handled it better. Although it's going to be odd for Hank Pym to be a new addition to the team in the second movie, considering his giant hand is the one that pulled Capt. America out of the ocean way back when. But at least he is getting a movie to establish the character.

The key to doing it fast, is have a story to tell. If you're having to force the story or having trouble with characters, work the outline more. It may help to do a stick figure storyboard scribbled on a window with dry erase markers or on a large sheet of paper. A computer screen, or typed sheets are a horrible medium for developing something with interconnected relationships and keeping characters/locations straight.
For him, his "novels" were actually recounting actual cases he worked with some name/place changes, so the plot arc was essentially known, as was much of the dialog involved in developing the story. His writing style used dialog exactly as it was spoken in the street by the people involved - conversational, profane, often fragmented. That kind of dialog flows easily and doesn't seem forced.

Yeah really well done series. I think they do a much better job with Captain America than they have in the movies too. For D.C. right now, Young Justice is also an excellent series, that focuses more on the usual sidekick characters, but also has a lot of interaction with the actual Justice League.

I actually liked a lot of the New Universe stuff Shooter put out for Marvel, but that didn't go far. I think they folded some of it into the main Marvel universe, actually.
Supposedly there's a Bloodshot movie being made, that was one of my favorite titles but I'm sure the film will be awful.

It's important to pace yourself, is what I'm saying. I'd hate to see you burn yourself out trying to write too much in too short a time, and find yourself unable to return to it. That strikes me as a possibility, with you worrying about being behind in your writing.
If you don't get to 50K words this month, don't consider it a failure; just consider it a good head start for November.

We can do a reboot but that means losing tons of valuable material. Or we can do a half-assed reboot, which appears to be Marvel's intention. Or a new universe like the Ultimate example from Marvel, though I get the impression they intend to shut it down soon, and/or reboot it.
Some of these characters have been too successful for their own good.

As writers such as myself came up with stories for individual characters or groups, I'd run a short series to tell the one tale. Then it would be done, instead of trying to drag a character along for 500 issues or more.
I think the biggest problem comics run into is trying to keep a character or group going forever no matter what. If you don't have a good story to tell, don't tell any story. Kitty Pryde was 13 1/2 years old for like 11 years, it was ridiculous, because time was clearly moving on. But if everyone aged, well She'd be 45 years old now.

Of course it helps hugely if you have the tale close to fully formed in your head already. A lot of writers can't firgure out where they're going until they can read it as if someone else wrote it.

Just read that Onion critique of 12 Angry Men. It doesn't address the meat of the movie. It simply ponders tha plot as it was written. Was the kid guilty? The writer seems to answer "most likely" and that may be the case. But the movie is mostly about examining the minds of men tasked with holding some kid's life in their hands and I think it achieves this absolutely brilliantly.
It's not about some string of coincidences exonerating or condeming The Kid, it's about the men making the decision. The one guy who was ready to convict because he didn't like Puerto Ricans. Another guy who was ready to convict because he had a shitty relationship with his own son. Would their guily votes have been acceptable as long as the other 10 had been rational about theirs? Would it have mattered since the accused was some low-life piece of shit living on the bottom rung of society? Is that justice? And would the result had been the same if one of the other jurors had been as intelligent, willful and dispassionate as Henry Fonda?
To me the film has always been powerful in it's simplicity. For two hours it never leaves one place and manages to create this tense atmosphere with just a handful of men grappling hard issues WITH THEIR MINDS! While the viewer is left with a shit ton of questions and ideas to ponder.
It's a wonderful examination of American justice and society and is one of my favorite films.
There was also a Showtime remake from 1997 directed by William Friedkin and starring Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott that's pretty good, too (it's the exact same story, mind you).

I saw that Julie Schwartz was one of the creators who'd be visiting. He was the main Superman editor in the 60s. Well, it so happened I had the Ambush Bug Summer Special, in which Schwartz appeared as a character in some sort of industry insider in-joke. So, I brought that in to have him sign it.
He busted up laughing when I handed it to him. He turned to Curt Swan and said, "Hey Kurt! Look at this!" Swan just sort of blew him off with a "Yeah, yeah, cool, whatever". I later learned that Swan was sick that night, so I don't hold a grudge over it. Schwartz just continued to giggle as he signed my comic.
The next day, the coworker who'd been in charge of tending to our guests told me, "Man, you really made Julie Schwartz's day! He was tickled pink, seeing that Ambush Bug comic."
That was a good feeling.

That's everything. If you can't describe a story verbally from start to finish in a half hour to another person, you'll struggle trying to write it.
If you get the whole story arc/characters/scenes sketched out in your head, the bulk of the story writes itself very quickly.
Some people get overly hung up on detail on the first pass. Forget that shit, sketch in the scenes/dialog crudely at first and MOVE ON. You'll clean that mess up on subsequent refining passes. Don't spend days tyring to describe a street corner on the first pass...that's a rabbit hole you never emerge from.
To use an engineering analogy - build a rapid prototype first.

Valiant was bought by some ex-Marvel executives and relaunched X-O Manowar in May, Harbinger in June, Bloodshot in July and Archer &ersand Armstrong just came out last week. Ninjak is set to debut in November.

The rule of thumb used by one of the recent Fantastic Four writers was that they acquired their powers ten years ago, and that date keeps moving forward as needed. And since the FF is usually regarded as having been the first of the big post-war superhero outbreaks in the Marvel setting, this carries over to all else. So the Marvel universe in its current form saw vast numbers of superhumans and vigilantes pop-up around the turn of the century.
There have been a few retro versions of Marvel teams. A 1950s Avengers lead by Nick Fury, with Sabre Tooth, Namora, Dominic Fortune, Kraven the Hunter among the team. And they just launched an X-men before the X-men series with a pre-adamantium Wolverine and Saber Tooth recruiting a team to help mutants. A confrontation with a young Charles Xavier is an interesting reversal.
There are opportunities for them to create characters who were active in the 60s, 70s, and 80s but were never well known and are largely forgotten. Wolverine could be active throughout, along with other characters who are ageless or nearly so.
I expect they'll get around to it, if for no other reason than to maintain some copyrights.

Alas when you go to things like Dallas COmicCon to see Lee or Shatner or another big name is, its like the order line at a McDonalds. Pay money for your ticket, shuffle through the line, make sure you have the comic or thing ready, hand it to handler, handler gives it to big name who signs, handler gives it back, you say a quick 'thank you,' and next person is up.
I had fun one year at Project A-kon. Finally managed to get on Fred Perry's commission list. And tell Fred I would like one of his Gold Digger characters drawn as a Veritech pilot from Robotech. Fred sits there with pencil trying to remember the uniform. So I ask him if the Robotech Art 1 book would help. He says yes, finds the pictures he needs and starts sketching like mad. And he tells me that book was how he learned to draw Robotech.

Random House only owns Solar, Turok and Magnus and The Mighty Samson (which I don't think Valiant ever published). When Valiant was bought by its current owners they came into all the original Valiant creations.
As for those Jim Shooter/Dark Horse relaunches, apparently the license was too expensive (so the say) and Dark Horse canceled the books after only a few issues. I think Magnus and Solar went about eight issues while Turok and The Mighty Samson went about four.

Most movies of the type (admittedly, a fish-out-of-water comedy) would have portrayed the defendants as poor minorities who were being lynched by an unrepentantly racist Alabama police and court system. Instead, the Southern folks were portrayed in a positive manner, as was the court system. The cultural differences were played out in a funny way, not offensive. At least to me, who knows a few girls like Mona Lisa Vito....

Doctor Solar was fun. Shooter was trying to cover some of the same ground as he did with Star Brand, throwing in a strong touch of Dr. Manhattan this time around instead of an average Joe type gaining immense power.
But even if it was just Shooter and an artist, it probably couldn't produce enough revenue to make it worth the time invested.

I mean, they weren't pre-pubescent but still early teens. Although anime often has no zone between teenager and thirty-something.
