Do Presidents Age Faster in Office?

Well that's the common perception but research shows that presidents by and large are more healthy and youthful than their peers - even after leaving office.

Neo-neocon has a theory on why we perceive presidential aging to be faster than normal:

IÂ’ve noticed in my own life and among my friends, as well as for public figures, that visible aging doesnÂ’t progress in smooth linear fashion. It advances in fits and starts and discrete bumps.

...There’s a group who hit the aging wall in their mid-to-late forties, going almost overnight from young to oldish. They’re the canaries in the mine. Another bunch “turn” quite suddenly in their late fifties, with the early sixties a time of particular peril for many.

These periods happens to coincide with the ages of many presidents while in office. I hereby submit that it’s not so much the stress of office—after all, the stresses come with an awful lot of perks, too—but the age of presidents during their administrations that is accountable for some of this perception of accelerated aging in presidents on the part of the public.

Ronald Reagan was a classic example of someone who went from young to middle-aged practically overnight. That wasn't so great for his film career, but luckily for him he maintained most of his middle-age good looks for the next 30 years.

Yeah, I don't get it.  He was held to a much higher standard than anybody else.

But did you notice that the only people who didn't get a media anal exam were the top 3 finishers?  Santorum was ignored because he was so low in the polls, Paul was ignored because he helps the MSM and Romney always escaped basically because he was uninteresting and the frontrunner.

Santorum benefited from being the last to be looked at.  There was some of that with Huckabee last time.  He came from out of nowhere.

Aries is identified with the Golden Fleece sought by the Argonauts. The phenomenon of precession of the equinoxes means that the spring equinox used to happen when the Sun was in Taurus, then in Aries, now in Pisces. People who believe in this sort of thing like to fiddle with the dates so that the era of Taurus (governed by Venus) corresponds to the Bronze Age (because copper and bronze are associated with Venus in astrology), then Aries (governed by Mars) gets the Iron Age (Mars = iron, duh), and the Age of Pisces corresponds to the birth of Christ.

Next up is the Age of Aquarius, when the world will be governed by mystical hippie bullshit, if the musical Hair is any indication. Fortunately we've got about seven hundred years to go in the age of Pisces.

The point is, though, you have to want to quit.  When you get to that point, cold turkey is the fastest, but most brutal, way to go.  The physical addiction is gone in a week or two.  The rest is social/psychological - including peer pressure. IMHO, most of the problem with quitting smoking is losing the "cool factor".

Hi, rons and ettes.  Watching the "ball game".  Also drying out about two pounds of homemade beef jerky, which will prove much more meaningful over the next 8 weeks or so than the outcome of the Iowa debacle.  More interesting to watch the jerky dry, too.

Don't put too much stock in the "aging president" thing.  Three of those guys did 8 years in office; long time for any male in his late prime.

My wife and I have had a crap day.  I sent her off to play bridge with her friends and I am indulging in a couple glasses of Civas Regal.  We only have even the best of dogs for a short while.  The house will seem a little emptier for a bit but we'll move on.  We are blessed with many other good things and I am not about to gripe. 

I heard Dems in Iowa may be turning out for Ron Paul just to F**K with the R's.

90 Bill Clinton was a weird outlier on the Presidential aging thing. In office he got a little heavier, a little grayer -- but once he left office, boom! Lost about fifty pounds (not in a good way), hair went white. I recall he had heart problems. There was a photo around 2002 or so of Clinton and George HW Bush doing some charity thing and Clinton looked older than Poppy Bush did.

Well, since everyone else is posting their depressing day, I will too:

I sent my resume in for a tutoring job a couple weeks ago. Since this tutoring program is part of the college where I got my master's degree (graduated last month) and I was a teaching assistant for the classes that I would be tutoring for, I figured I had a pretty decent chance of getting the position. Well, after being assured that they were actually in need of tutors, I just got an email stating that they were not hiring after all - all the tutors from the previous semester were coming back. What makes this so infuriating is that this is the second time this lady has told me that she was hiring, then told me exactly the opposite after I sent my resume in. I could understand it if she hired someone else and I could understand it of she asked for a resume because she might be hiring, and I could understand it if it was just a miscommunication the first time, but being specifically told that they were hiring only to be told the exact opposite a few weeks later twice in a row is maddening. The worst thing is that this was my one good (I thought) lead in the area, and now I am almost certainly going to have to move out of state and go live with my parents again.

One thing I like about the caucuses: It's a chance for you to get in on the ground floor of the party.  You can run for delegate (you'll probably win) to the county convention and run for other positions.

I can't emphasize enough how important that stuff is.  If you want to have an influence you have to do all the boring stuff.

283 JJS - this would be VERY unlikely to be your problem ... but... do you live anywhere that a previous owner may have installed and earthquake shut off valve on the meter?  It's a little ping-pong kind of ball that sits near the meter and if the meter is jostled by an earthquake (or just bumped hard by something else) the ball will fall and occlude the gasflow.  Since both hot water and furnace are on the fritz it's a thought.

When you light a cigarette, turn green and throw up, it makes it really easy to quit! My problem is the weight gain after quitting. So, I had a carbon monoxide detector that somehow drained its batteries really fast. One morning it woke me up, so I headed down to the basement to change the battery and noticed that while the alarm was the same as always it had numbers on it not "NOBAT".

I got my ass upstairs fast and called the fire department - yep carbon monoxide leak.

If you are going to put a low battery sound on the detector why not have a completely different sound?!?

I had quit seven or eight times for as long as one year , I've now gone almost six years sans tobacco . When I quit , I was smoking two packs a day , felt like shit , wore a patch for one day and quit . Have not touched a cigarette or cigar since ....... enjoyed smoking . I also hated how it made me feel .

331 @319- My Dad very nearly died from CO poisoning. He was using a portable heater in an ice fishing shack. All he remembered was waking up after having passed out on the ice. Fortunately, the heater ran out of fuel before it killed him. Needless to say, we both have CO detectors in our houses now. And it was the last time he used a portable kerosene heater in an enclosed space.

Just because we're weird that way, we repiped from the meter when we remodeled our kitchen in 2004. Only so many BTU can go through a certain diameter pipe over a certain length, and if you upgrade a furnace, a cooktop (especially a gourmet cooktop) or even a water heater, you can have issues where something'll kick in and drop the pressure for everything.

Most people will do the upgrade and not even check the capacity of the rest of the system.

I listened to that video you posted, and while it is very interesting, he is making a couple of assumptions. First, from a theological point of view he is assuming that God relates to the United States in the same way as he did to ancient Israel. Coming up on 1 year cigarette free. Quit cold turkey jan 12 2011. Going to bars and stressful situations bring the occasional craving but i find i dont even want to be around smoke for long anymore...like in bars. I did put on 10 lbs after I quit but im working to get that off. I can smell things so much better now, and food tastes better as well. I was a pack every 2 day smoker for 20 years. If I can do it, anyone can. Think of the money you are saving at what are they now close to 4-5 dollars a pack?

435 I think I'd go with an ice pack on the burned tittie for about 5 minutes. If you get something cold on minor burns pretty quick it can reduce subsequent blistering/pain.

Leo here.  I quit the day  after Obummer was elected.  I was smoking like a friggin' smoke stack on election night 2008, lighting one right off another while watching those cheering fools in Chicago.  I did use the nicotine gum but I  didn't follow the package directions, just popped one in my mouth whenever I felt like it.  That made me even more addicted to nicotine and made giving up the gum (which I finally did over Memorial Day weekend of 2009) 10 times harder than giving up the smokes.  I couldn't smoke at work, but I could chew the gum all day, so I did. So was  really miserable when I stopped the gum.  The gum helped quite a bit (it's as expensive as smoking), but if you use it, follow the damn directions.

Bottom line is, you'll have to quit cold turkey at some point no matter what you use (although I wish the ecigs had been around in 200 .

Altho I am not sure how familiar you are with, um, the work involved in say, cutting up two full sides of beef in to quantities small enough to, um, sell at the market. Takes a lot of work and a strong stomach. I never could be around when they were processing the hunt. Some things are best done in the woods.

That was a good violin, it has corner blocks, I can see them in the picture. Not all old violins have those, especially the crap ones. Can't tell if it was made by who the label says, but it was not a POS. I work on alot of old POS's, germany pumped them out by the truckloads in the late 19th/early 20th century with labels from every frigging builder from stradavarius to some nose picker in a back alley of france.
