— Maetenloch Do Presidents Age Faster in Office?
Well that's the common perception but research shows that presidents by and large are more healthy and youthful than their peers - even after leaving office.
Neo-neocon has a theory on why we perceive presidential aging to be faster than normal:
I’ve noticed in my own life and among my friends, as well as for public figures, that visible aging doesn’t progress in smooth linear fashion. It advances in fits and starts and discrete bumps.Ronald Reagan was a classic example of someone who went from young to middle-aged practically overnight. That wasn't so great for his film career, but luckily for him he maintained most of his middle-age good looks for the next 30 years....There’s a group who hit the aging wall in their mid-to-late forties, going almost overnight from young to oldish. They’re the canaries in the mine. Another bunch “turn” quite suddenly in their late fifties, with the early sixties a time of particular peril for many.
These periods happens to coincide with the ages of many presidents while in office. I hereby submit that it’s not so much the stress of office—after all, the stresses come with an awful lot of perks, too—but the age of presidents during their administrations that is accountable for some of this perception of accelerated aging in presidents on the part of the public.

So if you were feeling down today, cheer up - others were unhappy too.
With many returning to work for the first time in over a week with little to look forward to, today will be one of the year's most depressing days. And tomorrow is Divorce Day so you have that to look forward to.Experts suggest that the January blues will be at their worst today as festive cheer is displaced by having to face up to the grim realities of day-to-day life.

Idiotic Quote of the Day
[Okay this may have already been covered here before but just in case it wasn't...]
“The scale of Right Wing sociopolitical sabotage necessitates a Nuremberg-scale trial for all the corporate agents and treasonous capitalisto-fascist architects of our democracy’s current and most pressing misery. From the blatant Republican policy doublespeak emanating from think-tank sponsored word doctors to the outright obstruction and lies expectorated by Republican congressional representatives and senators, the very concept of governance can only be considered once the culprits are removed. Driven to real madness by unadulterated greed they have embraced an ideology, the success of which hinges upon the very ruin of this nation.”This word salad of buzz-words is typical of what you get when a insecure, not-so-educated person tries to sound like an intellectual. I suspect the only people impressed are the other poseurs.— Actor Steven Weber (from the 1990s NBC sitcom Wings) writing at the Huffington Post, October 24 (MRC Notable Quotables)

The late Sam Francis gave us the invaluable term “anarcho-tyranny” to describe that state of society in which “we refuse to control real criminals (that’s the anarchy) so we control the innocent (that’s the tyranny).”The family mentioned then listed five different felonies committed against them during the past year which makes them positively privileged compared to what the average Briton endures.Britain is far gone in anarcho-tyranny. Among my Christmas mail were a card and letter from a relative we barely communicate with the rest of the year. To make up for her side of the delinquency, she sends us a nice chatty summary of all that’s happened to her large and bustling family in the previous twelve months.

Well since it hasn't been normalized by the number of people born each month, it's pretty much bogus. On the other hand I am an Aries and I have to admit that I do have strong chaotic evil tendencies although these are generally offset by my inherent laziness and aversion to punishment.

Yeah, I don't get it. He was held to a much higher standard than anybody else.
But did you notice that the only people who didn't get a media anal exam were the top 3 finishers? Santorum was ignored because he was so low in the polls, Paul was ignored because he helps the MSM and Romney always escaped basically because he was uninteresting and the frontrunner.
Santorum benefited from being the last to be looked at. There was some of that with Huckabee last time. He came from out of nowhere.

Aries is identified with the Golden Fleece sought by the Argonauts. The phenomenon of precession of the equinoxes means that the spring equinox used to happen when the Sun was in Taurus, then in Aries, now in Pisces. People who believe in this sort of thing like to fiddle with the dates so that the era of Taurus (governed by Venus) corresponds to the Bronze Age (because copper and bronze are associated with Venus in astrology), then Aries (governed by Mars) gets the Iron Age (Mars = iron, duh), and the Age of Pisces corresponds to the birth of Christ.
Next up is the Age of Aquarius, when the world will be governed by mystical hippie bullshit, if the musical Hair is any indication. Fortunately we've got about seven hundred years to go in the age of Pisces.
Any questions?

The point is, though, you have to want to quit. When you get to that point, cold turkey is the fastest, but most brutal, way to go. The physical addiction is gone in a week or two. The rest is social/psychological - including peer pressure. IMHO, most of the problem with quitting smoking is losing the "cool factor".

For all the M&M's who've lost loved pets lately;
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I Remember
I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying. You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you
brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I
watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today.
Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today,
You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the
house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank
into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me to be so near
you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, then
smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and
watch you yawning
and say "Good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."
And when the time is right for you
to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you,
there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out... then come home to be with me.

EPL was a book about an upper middle class white woman who decided that she was miserable being married to a decent guy and having a comfortable life in NYC, so she left him and lived in Italy, India and somewhere else in a vain effort to find meaning out of pseudo-spiritualism and gluttony. Basically it feeds the narcissism and delusion of many woman who believe that they are being held back from living some sort of enlightened life by the schmuck of a husband who merely wants to work hard, raise the kids, and watch the game on Sunday afternoon.

Well, since everyone else is posting their depressing day, I will too:
I sent my resume in for a tutoring job a couple weeks ago. Since this tutoring program is part of the college where I got my master's degree (graduated last month) and I was a teaching assistant for the classes that I would be tutoring for, I figured I had a pretty decent chance of getting the position. Well, after being assured that they were actually in need of tutors, I just got an email stating that they were not hiring after all - all the tutors from the previous semester were coming back. What makes this so infuriating is that this is the second time this lady has told me that she was hiring, then told me exactly the opposite after I sent my resume in. I could understand it if she hired someone else and I could understand it of she asked for a resume because she might be hiring, and I could understand it if it was just a miscommunication the first time, but being specifically told that they were hiring only to be told the exact opposite a few weeks later twice in a row is maddening. The worst thing is that this was my one good (I thought) lead in the area, and now I am almost certainly going to have to move out of state and go live with my parents again.

You vote within the first 30 minutes. A handful of people left then.
One thing I like about the caucuses: It's a chance for you to get in on the ground floor of the party. You can run for delegate (you'll probably win) to the county convention and run for other positions.
I can't emphasize enough how important that stuff is. If you want to have an influence you have to do all the boring stuff.

I'm so sorry to hear about this and all the other pet losses. Those who don't have pets probably can't understand how poignant the loss of a beloved pet can be, but there's something about losing that sweetness, innocence, and devotion that is painful. My condolences.

If there is any -- ANY -- chance that your gas supply isn't under control, then run -- not walk -- the hell out of there. You don't need suffocated in your sleep, carbon monoxided, or blown to kingdom come. You might think you do, but you really don't.

So, I had a carbon monoxide detector that somehow drained its batteries really fast. One morning it woke me up, so I headed down to the basement to change the battery and noticed that while the alarm was the same as always it had numbers on it not "NOBAT".
I got my ass upstairs fast and called the fire department - yep carbon monoxide leak.
If you are going to put a low battery sound on the detector why not have a completely different sound?!?

Just because we're weird that way, we repiped from the meter when we remodeled our kitchen in 2004. Only so many BTU can go through a certain diameter pipe over a certain length, and if you upgrade a furnace, a cooktop (especially a gourmet cooktop) or even a water heater, you can have issues where something'll kick in and drop the pressure for everything.
Most people will do the upgrade and not even check the capacity of the rest of the system.

I listened to that video you posted, and while it is very interesting, he is making a couple of assumptions. First, from a theological point of view he is assuming that God relates to the United States in the same way as he did to ancient Israel. Ancient Israel was God's chosen nation, whereas I don't see any theological warrant for assuming that the United States, as wonderful as it is, is the new Israel, set apart and favored in the way. Second, he is treating Washington's inauguration as the starting point of the United States, instead of the Declaration or ratification of the Constitution, which seems a little like cherry-picking his evidence.

Too bad the book didn't end with said woman, heeding the word of a mysterious merchant promising a whole new world of decadent pleasures for her, solving the Lament Configuration and subsequently being ripped apart by Pinhead and the Cenobites. Clive Barker may have had some issues with that, , but it would have made for a kick-ass movie with an actual message.
Hellraiser might be one of the most socially conservative horror movies ever, every person who does something even somewhat bad gets frickin destroyed. I heard the husband of the Eat, Pray, Love chick is writing his own book.

You should ice it then rub some ointment on it. You know just to be sure upload a video of the ointment rubbing. Trust me ma'am I'm an eagle scout.

Leo here. I quit the day after Obummer was elected. I was smoking like a friggin' smoke stack on election night 2008, lighting one right off another while watching those cheering fools in Chicago. I did use the nicotine gum but I didn't follow the package directions, just popped one in my mouth whenever I felt like it. That made me even more addicted to nicotine and made giving up the gum (which I finally did over Memorial Day weekend of 2009) 10 times harder than giving up the smokes. I couldn't smoke at work, but I could chew the gum all day, so I did. So was really miserable when I stopped the gum. The gum helped quite a bit (it's as expensive as smoking), but if you use it, follow the damn directions.
Bottom line is, you'll have to quit cold turkey at some point no matter what you use (although I wish the ecigs had been around in 200

Altho I am not sure how familiar you are with, um, the work involved in say, cutting up two full sides of beef in to quantities small enough to, um, sell at the market. Takes a lot of work and a strong stomach. I never could be around when they were processing the hunt. Some things are best done in the woods.

That was a good violin, it has corner blocks, I can see them in the picture. Not all old violins have those, especially the crap ones. Can't tell if it was made by who the label says, but it was not a POS. I work on alot of old POS's, germany pumped them out by the truckloads in the late 19th/early 20th century with labels from every frigging builder from stradavarius to some nose picker in a back alley of france. A little suspect is the seller saying forgeries don't exist in the violin world, thats a load of crap. Every fucking thing made by these factories 100 years ago was a forgery. The damn things were a cottage industry, there were parts being made all over the place.
