— Maetenloch [Above-the-post Update - Andy:
[Above-the-post Update - Pixy: Do you know how hard it is to get TRS-80 floppies these days? I had to overwrite my copy of Zork.
He was buried at sea with a US Navy honor guard aboard the USS Philippine Sea (CG 58 ) on Sept. 14th. Captain Steve Shinego, commanding officer of the USS Philippine Sea presented the US flag to his wife, Carol Armstrong, following the service.
Space Combat vs. 'Aircraft Carriers in Space'
Naval analyst Chris Weuve explains the difference and how movies and books get it wrong:
There are so many that are so bad. Star Wars is probably the worst. There is no explanation for why X-Wings [fighters] do what they do, other than the source material is really Zeroes [Japanese fighter planes] from World War II. Lucas quite consciously copied World War II fighter combat. He basically has said they analyzed World War II movies and gun camera footage and recreated those shots. Battlestar Galactica has other issues. One thing I have never understood is why the humans didn't lose halfway through the first episode. If information moves at the speed of light, and one side has a tactically useful FTL [faster-than-light] drive to make very small jumps, then there is no reason why the Cylons couldn't jump close enough and go, "Oh, there the Colonials are three light minutes away, I can see where they are, but they won't see me for three minutes?"
The Dictatorial Impulses of the Left
Many people on the Left have become so comfortable with the desire to control everyone else's lives that they barely even bother with the pretense that they're somehow in favor of freedom
It is difficult now to imagine a modern university intellectual saying something as simple and unequivocal as "I disagree with what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it." He would be more likely to think, if not actually to say out loud or in public, "I disagree with what you say and therefore rationalise to the death my right to suppress it." In public, he would be more circumspect, presenting a suppression of freedom as an actual increase in freedom; that is to say of real freedom, not the kind the leaves everyone free to sleep under a bridge. But he would know perfectly well in his heart that what he was after was power: the greatest power of all, that to shape, mould and colour indelibly the thought of others, a power to which he believes that he has a right by virtue of his superior intellect, training and zeal for the public good.
And let's not forget the equally progressive efforts to shape young minds at Queen's University, which decided that students' private lunchtime discussions were in need of monitoring by hired eavesdroppers called "dialogue facilitators." Eavesdroppers whose uninvited "interventions" would "encourage discussion of social justice issues" and "issues of social identity, power and privilege," as defined by them and whether welcome or not. "Positive spaces and mindsets" would of course be created. If that doesn't sound sufficiently creepy and absurd, take five minutes to read how this "facilitation" was supposed to happen. Then ask yourself how you might respond to such monitoring and linguistic intervention. And note that, when challenged on their intentions, these champions of "social justice" were all too willing to lie.

Max Boot: Why Aid to Egypt Makes Sense
Foreign aid is intensely unpopular among American voters and it has often backfired and failed to produce growth, as Governor Romney noted in a recent speech. But in this case the U.S. aid is not designed to promote long-term growth; it is designed to tide Egypt over to prevent an immediate crisis. And extending more aid to Egypt actually enhances our leverage over the new government-something that President Obama was able to take advantage of after the embassy attack to tough talk with Morsi, forcing Egypt's president to strongly condemn the anti-American violence and to order a more vigilant role by the security forces in protecting the American diplomatic outpost.
I have no problem with using aid as bribery - but in this case if all we got for our nearly half a billion dollars was a condemnation of anti-American violence and some promises of better embassy security, then we ain't getting our money's worth. We could be moderately despised at a tenth that amount.
Global Warming Killed 5 Million People in 2010!!!!
Well not really once you get past the dishonesty and deliberate exaggeration:
When the study reports that 4.975 million people die in 2010 from the "combined climate-carbon crisis", the reality is that 4.575 million have not been caused by global warming.
Essentially, the report's authors claim that 0.4 million actually die from global warming (this number itself is very likely exaggerated, as I have described in my book Cool It, but a closer examination is beyond the scope of this article). Yet the impression clearly intended for the media was almost 5 million deaths, or a more than twelve-fold exaggeration.
And so far this year another 42 million people have died from the combined climate-carbon-old age/disease-not-getting-outa-my-way-fast-enough crisis.
The Perils of Partying with Lindsay
Where a staffer for Republican Congressman Jim Shimkus (IL) learns that Lindsay parties kinda rough:
Lindsay Lohan tussles with congressional staffer in Manhattan hotel room over cellphone photos, tells cops he choked her. It's unclear if she already knew LaBella, who works for Republican Rep. John Shimkus of Illinois and is the nephew of comedian Heather McDonald.
Cops say Lohan took Christian LaBella's cellphone so she could delete pictures of her partying - and he got physical with her trying to get it back.
After Lohan called the cops, LaBella was initially charged with misdemeanor assault for Sunday's blowup at the W Hotel Union Square.
But law enforcement sources said the assault rap will be dropped - and LaBella, 25, and Lohan, 26, will both be hit with low-level harassment violations.
It would be Lohan's second legal scrape in as many weeks, coming on the heels of her arrest for leaving the scene of a minor car accident.
Poor Lindsay - always the victim of completely random bad events.
Lohan is on her 23rd strike here so at this pace she might actually spend a complete day in jail sometime around 2016.
Well I like bicycling but in general I hate bicyclists. Not that there's anything wrong with riding a bike - but something about riding them more than occasionally seems to bring out the passive/aggressive nature and smug sanctimony in people. And the more spandex and semi-pro gear they wear, the stronger the douche factor.
This article by a self-proclaimed asshole cyclist doesn't really help:
I'm an asshole cyclist. I'm that jerk weaving in and out of traffic, going the wrong way down a one-way street, and making a left on red. I'm truly a menace on the road.
...And some of us are trying to get better. I've recognized that my bad behavior keeps others from taking up riding, and keeps politicians from investing in things I care about, like more bike lanes. So I've stopped riding on sidewalks and try to keep my illegal lefts to a minimum. But I've been a jerk for a real long time. So, let me say this to drivers, pedestrians, and my fellow riders alike: I'm sorry. See, aren't cyclists the nicest, most polite people in the whole world?
And when you get organized groups of asshole cyclists like Critical Mass, it's not a shock when this happens.
It's Decorative Gourd Season, Motherfuckers
I don't know about you, but I can't wait to get my hands on some fucking gourds and arrange them in a horn-shaped basket on my dining room table. That shit is going to look so seasonal. I'm about to head up to the attic right now to find that wicker fucker, dust it off, and jam it with an insanely ornate assortment of shellacked vegetables. When my guests come over it's gonna be like, BLAMMO! Check out my shellacked decorative vegetables, assholes. Guess what season it is-fucking fall. There's a nip in the air and my house is full of mutant fucking squash.
...And I'm just going to thread another gourd onto my necklace without breaking their gaze and quietly reply, "It's fall, fuckfaces. You're either ready to reap this freaky-assed harvest or you're not."
The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla.
And my twitter thang.

Obama sending aid to regimes that use children as soldiers...
http://scoamf.us/zS
The excuse is that the regimes are so "fragile" we can't push them much...or at all it would seem. Child Soldiers == SLAVERY in my book.
Romney needs to get this deplorable shit into the debates.
I want to see the left put spin on this.

We're back?
Cool.
Cyclists...some of them...really are annoying.
The ones who ride down the road, like they are a car and entitled to be there and tie up traffic.
We wouldn't have paved roads...if it weren't for automobiles.
Maybe in inner cities, but not everywhere.
It's the gasoline taxes that have paid for, and continued to pay for...those nice paved surfaces that cyclists are getting to enjoy for free.
For that matter...Electric Cars...are not 'paying their fair share' of road taxes either.

I saw that.
While I kinda get your point...the significance of the Mass Senate seat that Scott Brown is fighting for, is huge.
It was Teddy's old seat.
So it's symbolic.
Liberals are more desperate to get it back, than any other seat.
They think that seat is 'theirs'.

So the response from the Obama Administration is, "So what?"
They've broken the law so many times now and there is no consequence, and they could very well get re-elected. So who polices them? The Department of Justice? Eric Holder?
They are brazen and will continue to flout the law. Their media sycophants will not speak up to question this. We live in an increasingly lawless country.

There are many blogs on the internet. Perhaps there is someplace you would feel more welcome. We are not sure if you are serious, a troll or just think that being condescending to people that you have never met is a good strategy in terms of persuasion.
This may work in your circle of friends, but you have alienated people on this blog. Stop being a churlish, condescending and pouty college boy, and perhaps you may find that other people will engage you, rather than ignore you.

The number three cylinder, right? Driver side, nearest the front of the car. That's the one that always runs hottest on an air cooled bug motor.
Gotta be religious about adjusting the valves on a bug motor...and good oil. I usually did it every 1500-2000 miles and set number three a couple of thou looser than 1/2/4. Never had any problems doing it that way and I hammered mine through the southwest desert during the hot summers, took it off road, etc.
I always used Valvoline racing oil and changed it ever 3k. A stock bug engine doesn't have a filter, only a screen.

See, they have too small a sample pool to work with, so they don't get enough variety. And the Pew data breaks down even worse for them. Minorities, low income and government-dependent voters, lower education voters are more likely to answer polls than richer and more educated people and whites.
The system is tilted toward Democrats and low-information people. They can't get good data, their polls are worthless. And they know it, in fact. The Pew report is full of complaints about how the old phone system just doesn't work any longer, and discusses alternatives because they all know its doomed.

They don't have hydraulic lifters, so you get a bit of clatter out of the valve train, and the carb is right next to the (uninsulated) hood's air vents, so you'll hear the air whistling in sometimes.

Way ahead of you. I live in California. The local intelligence test is how long it takes you to realize you should vote "no" on everything on the ballot unless you have a gold-plated, perfect reason to vote "yes." And if you think you do, check twice. Half the time, it's a con.
Standard procedure in these parts is that if someone gets something sensible onto the ballot, the entrenched powers come up with something horrible that can be headlined as looking like a better version of the sensible thing, but is really designed to upset no one's rice bowl.

Way back in the Stone Age when I went to college, you were required to buy a dictionary -- much like today's entering students must have a laptop. The American Heritage Dictionary was, er, strongly recommended by management.
I've lugged that damn book around for 8 or 9 moves since then. It looks it, too. My children were also quite familiar with it, as I made them look up lots of words. Yeah, I know, big bully. But they both had 12th grade vocabularies by the 5th grade.

Jim Lehrer, moderator: Mr. President, could you talk about how great your stimulus was?
BHO: Thank you , Jim. As I've always said, it is important not to make a false choice here between the mistakes of the past and our new future, as we rebuild America in the image that I have foreseen in my own mind. The stimulus was just a down payment on all the future debt that we will acumulate as my party and my administration continue to buy votes!
(Applause)

While usually only mildly annoying...and easily ignored...he tread into more ignoble territory recently, by referring to Christianity as a 'cult'.

Epic tomes of even more annoying whining ensued.

You had to diagram out the sentences to see what they meant.

That's the best way to figure it out. Some issues are confusing that way, because you'll get good and bad supporting it, but usually those are ones that are just common sense and apolitical in nature.

Friend --
The first presidential debate is this Wednesday, and Mitt Romney has had a lot of practice.
In addition to the more than 20 primary debates he's done over the past year, his staff have told reporters that he's been preparing for the debate for months now. He's even been memorizing some "zingers" to attack the President and score political points.
Romney's allies are very confident that this strategy will work -- just yesterday, Governor Chris Christie said that Romney will do "extraordinarily well" in the debate and use it to "restart" the race.
My guess is that voters watching will be using a different scorecard -- not who can fire off the best one-liner, but who lays out a detailed plan to get the middle class thriving again. That's how President Obama sees this debate -- as an opportunity to talk about his specific plans to continue moving the country forward.
So before President Obama and Mitt Romney take the stage, take a look at some items we've put together on Romney's record -- both as a corporate buyout specialist and as a governor -- and his economic plans so that you have all the facts you need to tell your family and friends why he's not the right guy for the job.
#1 Ten things you need to know about Mitt Romney's business record
Mitt Romney has based his candidacy for the presidency on his experience as a corporate buyout specialist. But a closer look at Romney's business record reveals a pattern of job loss, bankruptcies, and outsourcing -- a kind of economics that Americans just can't afford. Before the first debate, listen to middle class workers talk about what Romney economics meant for them, and check out ten facts you should know about Romney's tenure at Bain Capital. Make sure others know them, too:
#2 Ten things you need to know about Gov. Romney's Massachusetts record
Ten years ago, Mitt Romney was elected governor of Massachusetts on his promise of more jobs, less debt, and smaller government. He left the state with the largest per capita debt in the nation and increased spending, and the state fell to 47th in job creation. At the debate, beware of Mitt Romney claiming that he cut taxes for middle class families 19 times as governor. In reality, Romney created or raised more than 1,000 taxes or fees during his four years as governor. Romney economics didn't work for Massachusetts, and it won't work for America. Check out this post about Romney's record as governor, and let others know about it:
#3 What you need to know about Romney's tax plan
Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a big economic plan: Offer $5 trillion in tax cuts weighted towards the wealthiest Americans without adding a penny to the deficit. According to Romney, they'd pay for it by closing loopholes and deductions for the wealthy. The problem is that the math doesn't add up, especially because they've taken measures that benefit the wealthy, like the loophole for carried interest and preferential treatment for investment income, off the table. Nonpartisan experts, including some of Romney's own outside economic advisers, have added it all up, and they say that in order to make the Romney-Ryan tax plan work, deductions that middle class families rely on -- like mortgage and child deductions -- will have to be cut, leading to a $2,000 tax increase for the average middle class family with children. When Ryan was asked this weekend to explain how they'd actually pull this off, Ryan said, "I don't have the time. It would take me too long to go through all the math." But no amount of time would make that math work. Get the facts on Romney's tax plan, and share them with others.
Thanks,
Stephanie
P.S. -- We have a new tool out today that lets you see how your community is better off thanks to President Obama. Take a look at the map of all the job-creation projects supported by this administration in your area, and be sure to tell others about them too.

Dear Mr. Smith,
We've been getting a lot of dead bodies dumping out on the road as the trucks load your garbage. We're glad to provide you with disposal service, but we have to note that standard bins aren't really designed for loads over 50lb and tend to break over time when overloaded.
We'd be glad to provide you with special heavy duty bins more suited to your body disposal needs. They're not expensive, only $40/ea and come with a lifetime warranty against splitting and leakage.

Ya see, I'm a Veteran and I have Hepatitis C and I've been taking some powerful drugs to get rid of it. The medication I just quit is called Teleprevir, about 12,000 bucks a month for three months of treatment. The other drugs I take are a weekly pegasys interferon injection and a daily dose of Riboviran. Used to be two daily doses, but it was found out that the drug was knocking my Hemoglobin count down too much. In fact, they added a weekly Pro-Crit injection to my regime. I also had to get a two unit blood transfusion.
Everyone said I looked much better after the transfusion. The nurse who gave me the transfusion, a very nice Black woman, said I looked 100% better. Asked her how I looked when I came in and she said I looked like Casper.
The Teleprevir is what's causing the itching as well as the red hot poker up my ass.

Our 'garbage men' never even get out of their big truck.
We wheel our bins out to the road...they drive along with their big 'yanker' truck...which has a hydrolic arm which picks up the bins, dumps them in the back of the truck...and drives on.
They never even have to touch the garbage, or the bins.
It's not that bad of a job.

I do not have a twin brother named Marv. I had an identical twin sister named Martha. Unfortunately she developed a severe drug problem and some psychological issues, and squandered her half of the inheritance on gender-reassignment surgery. "He" lives down in New York City, and is a well-known fixture in the transgendered leather community. Unfortunately "he"'s known as a boot-licking bottom, but that's his problem, not mine.

Yeah, I doubt that it's very 'free'...they're getting the payment out of you somehow.
We're charged a monthly fee of $27 for garbage pick up.
My point...which I forgot to add...was that for me to 'Hug my garbage man', I would have to flag him down and jump into his truck.

Dear Mr. Smith,
We've been getting a lot of dead bodies dumping out on the road as the trucks load your garbage.

The one's in our town hold 350lbs, so a nagging wife fits into one quite well. Our town being a town that strives to be a progressive hellhole has decided to spend a shit load of money making every city vehicle green, but don't do a damn thing about the garbage trucks that spray hydraulic fluid everywhere.

Might I recommend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elements_of_Style -- especially:
"Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell. —Elementary Principles of Composition, The Elements of Style"

OK all you guys who grew up in the 80s... bear with me here but... those cartoons sucked. I'm sorry, but they were awful. He-Man, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, all of them were just crap.
They were animated by hacks and written by committee and they were just terrible. I'm tired of the tee shirts and the movies and the remakes and the nostalgia. None of them were any good, never. It doesn't matter if the new TNMT movie has them coming from space or out of Michael Moore's crusty hind end. The show was freaking horrible. Give it up.

Trans was the shit. TMNT was the shit. At least when you're eight years old.
And now that you mention it, the 2003 TMNT series was actually pretty durned good. Helps that they ripped off all the old Mirage comics.
He-Man...well, hell, can't remember much about it. Yeah, I'll give you that one.
I can give you two examples of really good 80s toons. GI Joe, which holds up surprisingly well, and The Real Ghostbusters which had J. Michael Straczynski on the writing staff.

Yeah that's kind of my point. Nostalgia really can't overcome crap. I still have nostalgia for Voltron but I know I can't watch it again. That you can watch Robotech likely indicates that it is actually good and not merely your nostalgia making you think its still good.

"i write a lot, sure, but i don't repeat myself and i don't use unnecessary words"
"I write a lot, but I don't use unnecessary words."
10 words, from the original 16, and it even preserves the "a lot" from the original. Jimi Ray, you wouldn't know editing if it bit you on the backside and ripped out a chunk of flesh the size of a baseball. If you weren't so in-love-with the sound of your own voice, you might take a gentle hint -- but you prefer to conflate it with gay-bashing and rights and oppression and other such foolishness.
Fact is, we've got a nice club here for people to express themselves -- plenty of members are gay, or black, or Hispanic, or whatever....and we all rub shoulders and drink Val-u-rite together. But you're pushing an agenda -- at great length -- and folks aren't amused. Be a real person, or bugger off.

Oh I readily admit I don't like you, not at all.
Now, are you going to respond to my comment #458, wherein I point out that you shrank 4 inches today from last night's rants?
And don't try to weasel out by claiming 'I said I was a kid', because you referred to yourself as a kid in both posts.

As slow as they were, hippie buses gave you that same sense of danger as a Jeep CJ with a Dodge V8 approaching a corner.
Try driving one on a two lane highway when a speeding semi comes in the other direction. In a hippie bus, it's like getting blasted with the thrust of a 747 at takeoff

570...Rome didn't vote in their own destruction. I know what you're saying but I don't think there is any analog in history for a nation that elected a leader who hated them and everything they stood for and wanted nothing more than the destruction of that nation.
We are truly blazing a totally new, retarded path, here.
----------
Yeah, we really are, PrimOrd².
The dumbing down of our people has taken 3 decades.
But this creeping retardation of our collective consciousness is here, now...for the Left to harvest.
Also, Rome had a natural 'multiculturalism' problem...created by their conquest of so many other countries with separate cultures.
They didn't encourage it...like the Left has done to us.
The melting pot thing worked well, until the leftists screwed it up.
Thus creating the format for people to accept someone like Barky.

For informal internet prose, shooting for a 9th grade (or lower) readability is a safe bet. Even smart people don't want to work hard to understand something.
Smart people don't even want to work hard to read technical stuff in journals. That's why so many journal articles contain errors corrected in later editions. The proofers and peer reviewers MEGO and skip over stuff too.

Yep...and not just 'worse', they are multiples of worse.
The Bond Bubble that has been created, cannot continue for much longer.
It's like taking out ten credit cards...running up their limits, then taking out more credit cards...just to pay the minimum payments on the first ones.
And then continuing to spend money on things you can't afford.
As your debt increases, your interest rate goes up.
Because your credit rating gets downgraded.
This is where we are.

Now it's out of print, ADV seems to have lost the license in their reorganization and there seem to be a strange trend of multi-volume anime on Amazon Marketplace to have at least one volume marked up several hundred dollars.

The Teleprevir of which I spoke IS the new treatment It's in trials again as far as changing how it's dosed out, but has been okayed by the FDA since 2011. I just finished the 12 week course of the medication which works with the Pegasys and Riboviran. You can only take the Teleprevir for 12 weeks...after that, the virus starts mutating, plus the Tp has already done it's job, which is to knock that bitch down so the other drugs can finish it off.
My only complaint has been the constant itching...it can drive you absolutely nuts.
@480 Hope your friend stays virus free. The addition of the Tp allows some people to only have to go through 24 weeks of treatment instead of 48 weeks. I have my fingers crossed.

I use it all the time for what Henry described. Doing a ground resistance test on AFCI/GFCI circuits trips the breakers though because it has to leak current to do the test. To get a real ground resistance test you'd have to temporarily swap in a plain breaker for the cable test.
The load test is great for telling you what kind of voltage drops you'll be seeing under load.
I ran #10 wire on a 15A circuit most of the way for one of my outside receptacles due to a heavy voltage drop I measured on the original builder's #14 wire. If I run a saw or compressor outside I want that motor to see some decent voltage or the tool's gonna suck.
The NEC only "recommends" staying within a 5% voltage drop, it doesn't require it. My crib was full of shitty voltage drops due to code minimum wire for everything.
Down here in FL the inspectors seem to ignore ambient derating too. I got a thermometer I measured the attic peak/floor with and calculated I need to run #10 on a 15A breaker for a string of lights I ran down the peak of the attic. On a hot day the peak was over 140 degrees, the floor was 20 degrees cooler.
I'm the only guy I've ever seen calculate ambient derating for residential work.
I'm the only guy I've ever seen use one of these for torquing small breakers too:
http://tinyurl.com/8lly7sf
I've used the crap out of that torque screwdriver. Never seen another, and any residential or commercial job. All the other bozos just use the grunt method.

"a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object: the cult of St. Olaf"
An argument that the Christian "god" is a "particular figure" like a saint is one for theologians, not me.

Travesty! The Ramones staked out that turf decades ago.

When I was a kid the town tried to enact a bicycle license requirement where kids had to pay $1 for for a bile tag. And that was a sum of money then for a kid. ($8 - $10 today)
Everyone ignored it. I don't know anyone who got one of the tags.

Packed and ready to proceed to SAT airport for battle with TSA. If the fag screener wants to fondle my junk, I hope to create a massive fart for his enjoyment. Nothing like a little Hot Air in the morning.

Being a motorcyclist, bicyclists as a group tend to just piss me off...there are a few areas in CLE where they are known to ride...3 or 4 abreast. They know exactly what they're doing when they pull shite like this...

Thinking of cyclists gets my blood burning. Riding two across so I have to slow down behind them, not stopping at stop signs, and weaving all over the road making themselves a generel nusience. Ban them all. Leave the roads for big fat gas guzzling cars only.

I hate seeing Neil Armstrong's burial lumped in with the likes of Lidsay Lohan.
Godspeed, Neil Armstrong - a true American Hero.
