Brown Plastic Bowls and Potemkin Countries
In 1989 doctor Theodore Dalrymple through a confluence of events was one of 100 British guests allowed to tour North Korea. Here is his experience inside Pyongyang Department Store Number 1:
It didn't take long to discover that this was no ordinary department store. It was filled with thousands of people, going up and down the escalators, standing at the corners, going in and out of the front entrance in a constant stream both ways - yet nothing was being bought or sold. I checked this by standing at the entrance for half an hour. The people coming out were carrying no more than the people entering. Their shopping bags contained as much, or as little, when they left as when they entered. In some cases, I recognised people coming out as those who had gone in a few minutes before, only to see them re-entering the store almost immediately. And I watched a hardware counter for fifteen minutes. There were perhaps twenty people standing at it; there were two assistants behind the counter, but they paid no attention to the 'customers'. The latter and the assistants stared past each other in a straight line, neither moving nor speaking.Eventually, they grew uncomfortably aware that they were under my observation. They began to shuffle their feet and wriggle, as if my regard pinned them like live insects to a board. The assistants too became restless and began to wonder what to do in these unforeseen circumstances. They decided that there was nothing for it but to distribute something under the eyes of this inquisitive foreigner. And so, all of a sudden, they started to hand out plastic wash bowls to the twenty 'customers', who took them (without any pretence of payment). Was it their good luck, then? Had they received something for nothing? No, their problems had just begun. What were they to do with their plastic wash bowls? (All of them were brown incidentally, for the assistants did not have sufficient initiative to distribute a variety of goods to give verisimilitude to the performance, not even to the extent of giving out differently coloured bowls.)
They milled around the counter in a bewildered fashion, clutching their bowls in one hand as if they were hats they had just doffed in the presence of a master. Some took them to the counter opposite to hand them in; some just waited until I had gone away. I would have taken a photograph, but I remembered just in time that these people were not participating in this charade from choice, that they were victims, and that - despite their expressionless faces and lack of animation - they were men with chajusong, that is to say creativity and consciousness, and to have photographed them would only have added to their degradation. I left the hardware counter, but returned briefly a little later: the same people were standing at it, sans brown plastic bowls, which were neatly re-piled on the shelf.
Read the rest here and find out what happens when Dalrymple attempted to buy a pen.
Communism always leads to Potemkin countries where the citizens lead sad Potemkin lives as cogs in the machinery of national deceit:
But the most sombre reflection occasioned by Department Store Number 1 is that concerning the nature of the power that can command thousands of citizens to take part in a huge and deceitful performance, not once but day after day, without any of the performers ever indicating by even the faintest sign that he is aware of its deceitfulness, though it is impossible that he should not be aware of it. ...But this is no joke, and the humiliation it visits upon the people who take part in it, far from being a drawback, is an essential benefit to the power; for slaves who must participate in their own enslavement by signalling to others the happiness of their condition are so humiliated that they are unlikely to rebel.
The 2012 State Business Tax Climate Index
Apparently NY, NJ, and CA would really like to get away from the whole private enterprise thing and are doing their bestest to drive the evil capitalist exploiters away. But what's going on in NC?
Eating Your Sharia Cake and having It Too
In which it turns out that a Muslim hottie alternately demands that we respect her culture and tradition of wearing Somali garb and a full head-scarf in public and resists any calls for assimilation to American culture- and also wants the freedom to party, live the sorority lifestyle at Georgia State, work as a sky waitress flight attendant, and wear this kind of clothing - depending on her audience.
How To Get An Interview with Tom Hanks
Well if you're a low-on-the-media-foodchain podcast you make use of Tom's love of collecting old typewriters - and send him a 1934 Smith Corona. Here is his (typed of course) response:
Well Neo-neocon was glad to see Ann Romney going hose-less:
Pantyhose are one of the worst fashion innovations ever. It's almost humorous that they are/were touted as an advance over old-fashioned stockings with garters, when they are a huge negative in the comfort arena. They became popular when miniskirts came in, because the skirts had become too short for gartered stockings. It seems there was no turning back, except as an occasional novelty in the bedroom. The problems? Getting into them is awful. When one leg gets a run, you have to throw the entire apparatus out. The choice of what size to purchase is a never-ending coin toss. Don't get me started on the bathroom issues.
And did I say they were uncomfortable?

Ok. The joke I read online over the weekend that I made the mistake of posting on the Sunday morning book thread... that most everyone probably missed.......
While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, whose hand had been caught in the squeeze gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man.
Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his role as our president. The old rancher said, "Well, you know, Obama is a 'post turtle'."
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was.
The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle."
The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctors face so he continued to explain:
"You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, he's elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with."

The people who pass for artists these days are the best argument I know against art subsidies.

Anyway, they were driving through the traffic in downtown Seoul (which everyone who's been there knows is really packed), passing all of the skyscrapers (mostly apartments), and the NORK general turned to his SORK counterpart and said, "Very nice! Consider it requested.
Never was behind the Curtain myself, but I did visit East Berlin not too long after the wall fell. A couple of observations:
- The hotel was not designed for comfort in any way (I think the bathroom slippers were repurposed steel-belted radial tires), but was designed so that you could not get out without being observed.
- Bullet holes in buildings, from WW2, still not repaired
I still have my copy of the Five Year Plan that never happened, that I bought near the ruins of the wall. Occasionally I take it out and gloat a little.

True family story. My paternal grandfather cut both thumbs wide open to the bone on a cattle chute on the farm. They lived in town. He held his thumbs clamped shut with his fingers, drove home using his elbows to steer. When he gets there, he waits for my Grandma to walk home from teaching school. He has clean tea towels wrapped around his hands. He asks her if she has any silk thread. He tells her to get it and sew him up. She did. He only consented to a tetanus shot because she cried. Now mind you, he would not go into the doctor's office. The doctor and his nurse came out to the pickup and gave him the shot through the window. He also asked the doctor if there was anything wrong with Grandma's stitching, the doctor wisely said no, it should hold.
So, hell, no, this Okie is not gonna let America go without a fight.

I can only imagine the humiliation but, also, the longing. What was held in those display cases may have been crap to a consumer from a developed nation, but to them, a choice, any choice, and yet no choice at all, must have been agony.
I am always amazed when I meet folks, such as the janitorial staff that serviced our old office building. They had been a family of engineers in China. Here, they were janitors, and were happy.

I like the Ballard Locks http://tinyurl.com/agoqdb

Don't go to the dumb Experience Music Project, it is expensive and not worth it.
Yeah, everyone has to go to Pike Place Market at least once.
The Underground Tour in Pioneer Square is awesome!!
The Great Wheel is pretty cool, kind of spendy I guess, some people say, but the view is neat.
Cheaper version of a boat tour is just to walk on one of the ferries and ride it round trip.
I think the Ride the Ducks Tour is cool cause it goes in Lake Union which gives you a different perspective on the city.

Where would you like to start?
It's near impossible to convey to an American - especially a Gen-Xer or younger - what those peoples' lives were like.
The commies weren't big on aesthetics. A beautiful city like Prague, mostly untouched by the war, was mostly gray. Coal and gas were the fuels for heat, and concepts like the EPA would have made most of these folks laugh their asses off. Not much coin for enforcing environmental standards when hard currency is non-existent.
Food - go to the grocery store. If an item was available, great. As in, want breakfast cereal? Fine, if they had any, it was State brand. Oh, you thought maybe you'd like Capn Crunch rather than Raisin Bran? Not so much. State brand, if they had it. Extrapolate that throughout your local supermarket. Milk, bread, meat (might get lucky and grab pork chop or pork sausage ... banner fuckin day at the Czech grocery store). On and on.
Families packed into houses divided into apartments. No one owns anything. Pride of ownership? Ever seen Alphabet City on the Lower East Side? If they had a private apartment in some high-rise, it's cus they were lucky enough to know someone or have gotten on the list early enough before the last tenant died.
Six month to a year waiting list for a car. A shitty Fiat-knockoff that might start or not. Tough shit, prole.
Everyone has a job, sure, but ain't no money. What are you gonna buy, anyway?
Want fast food? There's a stand every half mile or so that serves sausage and bread, with a spoon of mustard. Oh, don't like that? Walk another half mile and you can have s ausage and bread, with a spoon of mustard. Try selling that vision to an American middle schooler.
Malls? Nah. State department stores. Don't like the fashion? Tough shit, prole. You're lucky we have coats, this year.
Go to the dentist. Want novocaine with your fillings? Hope you got something to trade for it ... Johnny Walker Red and Marlboro Reds were how we tipped our household servants, so they could get many of the things we take for granted on a daily basis.
Rampant black market ... all in order to get hard currency. Tourists were regularly locked up for trading currency. Hell, I used to get offered $50 bucks for the Levis off my ass.
And the Tuzex stores. A special version of the Czech Corona that could be spent on Western goods. Seems nice right? Not so fast, prole. Only for high-ranking Party members.
I can go on, and at some point I will, but you get the idea.
And one more thing. Complain, and you'd find yourself in a prison somewhere in Slovakia, never to be heard from again.
Next time one of your lib asshole friend pines for "equality", show them this.

whole concept of one bathroom per bedroom, give or take. Much of the

had been caught in the squeeze gate while working cattle, the doctor
struck up a conversation with the old man. Posted by: Some Guy in Wisconsin at October 10, 2012 10:21 PM (HZCkA)

Lord, I know all about this.
My Dad was up late one night, about 2 in the morning, printing a big jobup due the next day. And, him being who he was. The press was running so good, he broke out the mop and started cleaning. Well, he slipped and fell. Broke his leg. Crawled over to the press and finished the job. Crawled over to the phone and called my brother, told him he had a minor injury and needed to go to the Doctor, what all needed to be done the next day, and not to call my Mom before 7:00, you know, not to wake her up.
Then he crawled to the car and drove himself to the hospital.

As in Redmond Town Center? That's a weird mall. We're in the NW people, it rains here, maybe outdoor malls aren't the way to go. Plus it skews to the teen demographic in terms of stores. But there are a couple of good restaurants and Pinkabella has good cupcakes. There's an REI there too. The comic book store is OK, but they are grumpy I always feel like they are judging me or something. Not at all like the comic book store on Big Bang Theory.
If you meant the town center of Redmond, yeah, it's strange too. But, you can go for a walk on the Sammamish River Trail. It's a nice walk. I don't think there's any "must see" in Redmond. You can drive by Microsoft, but there isn't any "tourist" spot. There's a visitor's center in building 92, but I don't know if you are allowed to wander there alone.
Not sure how long you are staying but Redmond has an awesome Saturday market in the empty space next to Redmond Town Center. Oh and Matador on the corner of Leary way has an awesome happy hour, cheap but delicious Mexican food. They scalp you on the drinks prices though.

Ivars and Dicks are two decent local small-chain fast food places. Ivars is fried seafood, Dicks is hamburgers. Taco Time is a little more widespread (You didn't say where you are from.)
You've arrived just in time for our first rainfall in two months. No, I don't know WTFBBQ, more used to seeing the -sun- once in two months.
The King Tut exhibit is at the Pacific Science Center - that's next door to the Space Needle. The Space Needle itself is still cool - actually eating there is $$$, but still worth it at least once.
Seafood is big. Not a seafood guy though. The original three Ivars are real sit down restaurants. Not too upscale, but the food is good.
Upscale is the Metropolitan Grill. The bill will cause an aneurism, but anything beef (or 'non-seafood' like lamb, etc.) will knock your socks off. El Gaucho is my second favorite place to eat.
Everything else I'd point at would be "Standard Tourist Stuff". Pike Place Market, Monorail, Seattle Art Museum, maybe Aquarium. Goggle at the insanity that is a ten story library with no stairs. And the five-car-wide roads striped for two lanes of cars and two lanes of bikes. Everywhere.
Note that all the people you see are Leftists or tourists. Jim McDermott gets 80% of the vote here - and the other 20% is for someone to his left.
Oh, speaking of which: Come to Fremont, "Center of the Universe", and get your picture with our beloved statue of Lenin. And this is quite close to a statue "Waiting for the Interurban" (which was a private bus line that made a profit on the same route the city can't manage it after they killed it off.) And there's a Troll Statue under the Aurora Bridge that's interesting. Once.

Don't know why, but we were put on the VIP floor, in a five-room suite that was elegantly appointed in "Fancy Scandinavian" style. We didn't have to pay extra for the upgrade, which perplexes us to this day.
Turning on the TV, we got a Finnish station showing Larry Bird dribbling down the court --- in a country where local TV's had to be secretly altered to get anything but state-owned Estonian stations.
Downstairs, I got got pushed around for no apparent reason by a security goon. I pushed back, cursing him loudly in English. He backed off.
Wife and I talked very quietly in our room about how the Russky presence was palpable. How the stores contained nothing but basics. How you had to apply for permission to use a Xerox machine.
Recently, I read where Estonians described the Viru Hotel as being made of micro-concrete: concrete mixed with microphones.
Maybe it was a good thing we kept our voices down.

I don't know, were people jumping off the Fremont Bridge? I think that's the one.
There are a few statues in Fremont, besides Lenin other famous ones are the Troll and "Waiting for the Interurban"
Had awesome Japanese food at a place called Maneki in the International District.
Over on our side, if you want good seafood head to Bellevue and SeaStar. Good steak you can get at Daniel's Broiler, or we have an El Gaucho over here too.
You'll pay a toll to drive across the 520 bridge, no toll on I-90.

That was the Aurora Bridge. It's a high state highway bridge. They've added a pretty high fence across the bridge to stop people from landing on Adobe.
But there's still no center barrier with opposing traffic going 60mph in abnormally narrow lanes with no shoulder. (The real speed limit is something saner, but no one but the bikes are going that fast.)

There is also the crossover with tabletop roleplaying games, though. People who sell that stuff do want to meet lots of new people who are also interested in playing RPGs.
RPGs are a social activity, even if they're for social nerds.

In Seattle, Washington, more than 230 people have died by suicide from the George Washington Memorial Bridge, making it the second deadliest suicide bridge in the United States.[3][4] In a span of a decade ending in January 2007, nearly 50 people jumped to their deaths, nine in 2006.[5] [1]. At a cost of $5,000,000, a suicide barrier was completed on February 16, 2011.

Right where you did is great. I could listen to stories like that for the length of a typical ONT, and hang on every word. I grew up with the idea around me that the USSR was just an alternate way of organizing society, separate but equal. I knew it wasn't true but had no resources to show otherwise, until one day I read Ayn Rand, and, a later day, Reagan said the words "Evil Empire," and I knew I was not alone.
Stories that confirm my childhood vision about that are like food to me.

All the little shops, (yes -all- of them) with a little green plus, cross, crescent, cadeucus, leaf, shield or whatever are "Medical Mary Jane" places. No, I have no idea how we can sustain more MMJ places than Starbucks - and we have a lot of StarBucks.
And there are plenty of places that provide "Massage". Al Gore likes to get his chakra loosened up there.

We have a good friend of the family whose French Canadian wife insisted on putting in a bidet in their new big bathroom.
So, we're over their visiting with our kids and Mr. elizabethe leaves our 3 year old in that bathroom briefly to go potty, and the next thing you know you hear him yelling "ahhhhhh!"
yeah, back in the mid 70's a friend of mine had a father who owned a decent size masonry company. They spent a shitload of money adding a level to their house, and added a big addition on the back, and when they did that one of the downstairs bedrooms became a huge ass bathroom with a sauna ,and a bidet. Well we were pretty young and never saw a bidet, and one of our friends peed in it. He poked his head out of the door and says "hey , are you supposed flush this thing?"
We laughed for years about that.

The story going around in the early 90's involved the visit of some high-level NORK officials to Seoul.
Perhaps projecting his country's practice of creating Potemkin-like facades, one such visitor, seeing traffic jams along the route to their meeting place, sneered at an ROK official that
"It must have been really difficult getting all your country's cars to congregate here in Seoul".
To which the ROK guy replied,
"Yes, but not nearly as hard as dragging in all these skyscrapers and high-rises."
Also, in those days ROK newspapers gleefully ran a photo of Kim Il Sung's neck, taken from behind and displaying an English-muffin-sized tumor squatting thereon.

Way to go! Every so often, you have to break the glass and try to get people looking at reality.
As some of you may know, I went to Disneyland a while back. Bumping around Downtown Disney while the BH was shopping, I found one of the poor guys with the empty "Disney Vacation Plan" booths hanging out. I noticed that the hometown on his badge was Athens, Greece, so I asked him if he had any word about how things were going there. He 'splained that he was a tot when they moved, but he talked to his relations and they were plenty worried. So I gave him one of the Andrew Jackson Presidential dollar coins that I normally carry around and told him that he should look up what happened to the Second National Bank of the United States, and also look at what happened in Iceland just a couple of years ago (going into quite a bit of detail), and make sure to talk to his cousins about it.

The Second Bank of the United States was authorized for a 20-year period during James Madison's tenure in 1816. As President, Jackson worked to rescind the bank's federal charter. In Jackson's veto message, the bank needed to be abolished because:
It concentrated the nation's financial strength in a single institution,
It exposed the government to control by foreign interests,
It served mainly to make the rich richer,
It exercised too much control over members of Congress,
It favored northeastern states over southern and western states,
Banks are controlled by a few select families.
Following Jefferson, Jackson supported an "agricultural republic" and felt the Bank improved the fortunes of an "elite circle" of commercial and industrial entrepreneurs at the expense of farmers and laborers. After a titanic struggle, Jackson succeeded in destroying the Bank by vetoing its 1832 re-charter by Congress and by withdrawing U.S. funds in 1833. (See Banking in the Jacksonian Era)
The bank's money-lending functions were taken over by the legions of local and state banks that sprang up. This increased credit and speculation. At first, as Jackson withdrew money from the Bank to invest it in other banks, land sales, canal construction, cotton production, and manufacturing boomed.

I don't have a gas station in my backyard now so what's the diff where I go to fill up as long as it only takes 15 minutes and I can go at least 300 miles on the charge? My point is that is what it is going to take for electric cars to compete with gasoline for the average consumer.

I would like a lever gun just cause they are so darn cool, but I don't know what caliber I'd want it in. I don't own a revolver, I'd want to pick the wheel gun to go along with the lever action so they would be the same. .44 maybe.

I already own 2 cars so if I could have one that (total cost) was cheaper for my 80 mile a day commute hell yeah I'd buy one. But that's the problem these pricks want to force a solution (I know you already know that) for some gaia crap.

Yea, doesn't this seem sort of hypocritical from the open borders crowd at Reason? You can freely come into this country without anyone asking who you might be....BUT YOU CANT POST ON OUR SITE!!!
Which brings me to a point about the "true" libertarians. The ones who open borders types. How do you square that policy with supposedly strong private property rights? How can you say everyone on Earth is entitled to come to this country whenever and however they please and then at the same time talk up individual property rights?

There are some pretty nasty parts of the North side. But back in the 80s a friend and I went into a little bar up there and it was just like the bar in my little town. Everybody stared when we walked in. I assumed that was bad at the time but now I know it's a sign of a really tight neighborhood. Their staring was wondering who your related to not that they want trouble or to rob you. Just was weird since I grew up where that was not the way things were.

Heh - my father, as an unabashed capitalist, co-owned at least 3 different over-40-ft boats, all consecutively moored at Stimson's Marina in Ballard. I did the Ballard Locks many times as someone being looked 'at' - you had to be aware that you were under surveillance. It was a little different being watched as you handled the boat's mooring lines with an audience and possibly cameras. But we were always friendly and conversed with whoever had questions or comments.
Christina's Mighty Jugs - if you want a fabulous lunch with great Seattle atmosphere, you might want to try 'Duke's'. It's not large, but it's a Seattle-only place with PHENOMENAL food. Full bar - large screen TV's. You would likee.

Since all they seem to care about is reelection, political offenses should default to lifetime bans on holding elective office -- stuff like "not enacting a budget on time", "voting for an unbalanced budget", "accepting improper contributions", "having a law you voted for declared unconstitutional by the SCOTUS", etc.

Google. And Bing. Never saw that particular movie myself. But search "German expressionist horror films" and you can find some goodies.
It helps that FW Muranau's most famous film is probably Nosferatu. *The* vampire movie that everyone wants to rip-off. He did several other horror movies along with that one.
And speaking of Nosferatu! There's a DVD release by Image Entertainment that contains the most wonderful commentary track/essay by some guy named Lokke Heiss. It's GREAT! It also contains two audio tracks, an organ score and a "symphonic" score (dude on a keyboard).

And speaking of Nosferatu! There's a DVD release by Image Entertainment that contains the most wonderful commentary track/essay by some guy named Lokke Heiss. It's GREAT! It also contains two audio tracks, an organ score and a "symphonic" score (dude on a keyboard).

Really? There hasn't really been much in the way of old silents for easy buying round here. Apart from Chaplin etc. Seen some of the weird ones at the movies awhile ago, but not on DVD retail.
