— Maetenloch I'm busy with Phase 2 of the move to the bunker. So tonight's ONT will be succinct.
Happy Birthday Margaret Thatcher
She turned 87 yesterday. I was but a wee lad when she took office in 1979 but I do recall the feeling - even in the US - that her election might mark the end of the long free-fall of the 70's. And in 1980 that proved to be true.
Oh and some Iron Lady trivia - do you know what her profession was before going into politics?
What Reagan Thought of Joe Biden
Ronald Reagan was not impressed with Joe Biden. In fact, writing in his diary in his usual abbreviated style on June 15, 1987, Reagan described Biden this way:
He's smooth but pure demagog [sic]-- out to save Am. [America] from Reagan Doctrine. That was a year after Reagan made a note about Biden and Senators Ted Kennedy and Howard Metzenbaum, who were busy making "vitriolic attacks on TV" about Reagan's nominee for Chief Justice of the United States, then Associate Justice William Rehnquist. Wrote Reagan:
They really are a lynch mob.
What Fred Thompson Says About Old Joe Biden
The debate Joe was the Joe he knew in the Senate:
I met Joe Biden almost 20 years ago and served in the Senate with him for eight. In private conversation among equals he can be candid, introspective and thoughtful. But when he puts on his political hat he has no inner voice that tells him, "Joe, you're going on too long. Joe you're being a bully. You're being discourteous to your colleagues. Joe, that makes no sense. It's obviously not true. Don't say that." He either has no idea how he comes across to normal people or he doesn't care. I've never figured it out.
Dearbornistan Watch: Now Illegal To Drive With Israeli Flags in MI
Well effectively illegal since you will be fined for violating the de facto state religion:
On 9-14-2012, Dearborn Fordson High School principal called the police on me for driving with 2 Israeli flags on my truck.
"The Dearborn police were one car behind me when this student threw a bottle on my windshield. The police did not stop the student, but instead stopped me for 30 minutes asking me why I would display Israeli flags on my truck."
"The Fordson High principal filed an incident report and so did I. However, Dearborn police refuse to release either report. Incident #: 12-49143, Incident #: 12-49503."
Some of what they do is straight polling but most is designed to produce Democrat talking points about how crazy Romney supporters are.
I spoke by phone today with Wisconsin voter Dave Summers, who lives in the Madison area. He told me, "I got a survey. I don't normally answer these calls, but I did [this time]. I started out pretty normal - President, Senate." However, he said it then got weirder. The automatic survey asked if he had a favorable or unfavorable impression of Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson. He said he was greatly disturbed when the automated call then asked, "Do you believe conservative media want white people to think Barack Obama hates them?"
Did Obama have a "coke nail" at Occidental?
Or maybe he was just copying Carrie Fisher's nail style.
Also video of Obama's high school years found:
Is America Ready For a President Who's Never Been Drunk?
All I know is that if there's an R after your name, everything you do or don't do is wrong.
10 Ass-Kicking Warplanes You've Never Heard Of
The Navy's 16 E-6Bs are doomsday back-ups, equipped with nearly every communications device imaginable, with the additional ability to transmit radio messages to submerged submarines via a trailing, five-mile-long antenna.
But it's the E-6's other duties that make it so interesting day to day. With so many different radios, the E-6 is one of the few U.S. warplanes -- the secretive "Bacon" is the other -- that's able to function as a "universal translator," helping U.S. and allied forces talk to each other across great distance. Reporter David Cenciotti even tracked an E-6 apparently playing relay during the May 2011 raid to kill Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan. "

Now that I think about it most of the good quotes from Gone With the Wind apply to Obama.
The bad economy: "I won't think about it today, I'll think about it tomorrow."
War on Terrorism: "Fiddle-dee-dee! War, war, war; this war talk's spoiling all the fun at every party this spring."
Taxes on the middle class and small businesses: "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."
Election Day: "I'm very drunk and I intend on getting still drunker before this evening's over."
Obama With Michelle: "Great balls of fire. Don't bother me anymore, and don't call me sugar."

I haven't seen a single Romney sticker except for one spotted in Bluff, Utah whilst on vacation. But his signs are displayed on walls and windows and front yards, and I've seen none for Obama. We may be wary of cars getting keyed, considering how many potentially hostile territories they may traverse, but when it comes to the home field we're saying it loud and proud.
One large sign I saw draped on the side of a commercial building right by the 405:

Don't put all this on Michigan. I don't care where you are - anyplace where muslims are more than a couple percent of the population, this is what you get. Without exceptions. They are trash, universally, everywhere. Allowing muslims to be police or soldiers is the worst thing you can do. There is not one place on earth that contains a productive, peaceful, useful muslim population. They are parasites, and our failure to treat them as such means that we will see more of this every year going forward. All we can do is pray that they get cocky and go for over-reach before it's too late. Only then might we perhaps have the stone to do that which must be done.

I saw my first Obama/Biden yard sign. This area went 60% Obama last time. I haven't seen any Romney signs.
Normally, esp on the main 2-lane road I take to work [20 mins each way], there'd be several dozens if not hundreds of signs by now for a POTUS election year.
Honestly, I haven't seen any until today. It's like the entire county is waiting until the last minute to decide. [Not all of us obvs, but you know what I mean.]
I mean, even if you think Romney supporters would be afraid in the burbs...where did all the BO signs go?

True. Journalism will return approximately a nanosecond after a GOP president is sworn in.
We cannot let the media destroy people on our side any more, even if they are imperfect. In fact when the normal lib client groups begin to screech (environuts, code pink, war/torture haters, etc), we have to mock them mercilessly. That's the only way to deal with them, to blunt any power they might have. But I suspect the bubble has been burst and most of the country is on to them now.
I have to get back to work, but does anyone remember how well the polls predicted the 2010 elections? Was the wave bigger than expected? It's different now with O on the ballot, but I think the polls are underestimating Romney because conservative/GOP voters may not be participating in polls as much as Dems/lefties. Wondering if that happened in 2010, don't remember.

"I'm so deeply in debt that I can't even breathe. I have a student loan debt that is enough to buy a huge fucking house. But instead, because of the debt, we have to live in a shitty little house that leaks when it rains and smells like dog urine. And, for the pleasure of taking out the enormous student loans that I will be repaying for 35 years (that's until I'm almost 70 fucking years old!), I get to work in a job that sucks so hard I want to blow my brains out every day I set foot in the door. All I ever encounter is the ass-end of humanity. I would settle for a job that is simply "thankless," since what I get instead is people constantly threatening either to sue me or kill me. It makes me want to fake my own death and assume a false identity. "

I followed the plot fine, it was simple as Dick and Jane Go to School. That still doesn't explain why people who were unable to hurt him with guns decide to try to use their fists instead. And it works.
That was just an asinine excuse to have a complex fight scene, it made absolutely no sense. Neo should have wiped the floor with every single one of them in a matter of seconds and walked away shaking his head at how stupid they were.

I'm in the market for two new computers.
A new desktop for myself and a new laptop for my mom.
I think I'll order through Dell since my company gives me a discount. I was looking at the XPS 8500 Series. I'm currently running a
Inspiron 530
2x2.80GHz
3.25 GB Ram
Win XP
ATI Radeon 3400 512 MB
I'm starting to see limitations on the OS and video card. The computer itself after 5-6 years seems to be getting slower - partly presumably the accumulation of registry crap, partly its an old system.
My mother is not a power user - she wants something light and that's about it. So I'm looking at an Inspiron 17R. Seven pounds seems reasonably light...
The good/bad thing about Dell is I still have to decide on system specs...which I no longer have much of an idea about.
Thoughts?

One that people might not know but should is Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid with Steve Martin when he was actually funny and Rob Reiner at his best splicing old detective films into the sequence with amazing skill. As far as combet scenes go, I would have to agree with whoever said "Platoon". I read somewhere (right after the movie came out) that Dale Dye and several other Vietnam vets who assisted in the filming of the movie had to leave the set during the filming of the final battle because it was too realistic.

Actually, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid was Carl Reiner, his father.
Re best combat scenes, take a look at the first attack in All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). I can only compare it to D-Day in Saving Private Ryan. It was decades ashead of it's time.

Didn't they film Matrix 2 and Matrix 3...back to back, in a hurry because of an impending strike?
Can't remember which Union it was that was about to go on strike...but I read at the time, that they had moved up production of both of them because of it.
Best action sequence.
Damn...that's a tough call.
I always thought that the scene of the double launch of two shuttles, on 'Armageddon'...then the scene at the Space Station...continuing on to the slingshot around the Moon...was a hell of an action sequence.
Might be best to break that down to different types of 'action sequence'...like battle scene, chase scene, etc.
Because there really are so many good ones.

breathe. I have a student loan debt that is enough to buy a huge fucking house.
But instead, because of the debt, we have to live in a shitty little house that
leaks when it rains and smells like dog urine. And, for the pleasure of taking
out the enormous student loans that I will be repaying for 35 years (that's
until I'm almost 70 fucking years old!), I get to work in a job that sucks so
hard I want to blow my brains out every day I set foot in the door. All I ever
encounter is the ass-end of humanity. I would settle for a job that is simply
"thankless," since what I get instead is people constantly threatening either to
sue me or kill me. It makes me want to fake my own death and assume a false
identity. "

@638 As far as great lines from movies, let's not forget all the plays made into movies:
Any of Tennessee Williams (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof ) (Streetcar Named Desire) etc.
A Man for All Seasons
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf
Which got me to thinking--50's and 60's were the decades for plays made into movies. Shitload of great ones.

Hey, asshole. Did you see this line from the story reporting that poll:
"In the current poll, Democrats outnumber Republicans by nine percentage points among likely voters ..." Bwahahaha!!!

So, Obama leads by 3 with a D+9 sample? Which exceeds the partisan advantage held by Democrats in 2008? You're the exact type of idiot to whom these skewed "polls" are targeted.

To judge by Tim Blair's blog, she seems like quite an inept leader (and starting off your leadership with a huge lie regarding the carbon tax can't be good). But she still seems better than Obama. For example, she doesn't seem to hate the country she is in charge of. But replacing her with Kevin Rudd doesn't seem very promising.

I suppose large enough to seat three preschoolers comfortably. my mom started giving me instructions on how to put it up on a pallet, so it would be dry and give it a better plywood floor, and bed it with straw to make it warmer, and more comfy for them. it was hard not to laugh out loud.

AoS leans right most of the time, but that's about as far as it can be taken. The republican party "leadership" is openly mocked, as are quite a few of the so called "conservative" media personalities.
There was a description of AoS in some blog awards category years ago that best described it - FratBoytarian.

She formed a government with the Greens.
For the next year and a half she functioned basically as a sock-puppet for the leader of the Greens, with his arm up her backside moving her lips and driving the implementation of a bunch of policies (including the infamous carbon tax) at their behest which she'd previously promised not to do.
Labor's largely been wiped out in state elections, and the Greens even more so, they have kind of a ranked-preferences voting system down there and so second choices matter but now everyone's pissing on everyone else.
The head of the federal Liberals (the conservative party) seems like a sensible guy; the state Liberal governments that have sprouted up following the application of electoral Roundup to Labor have ranged fairly widely in effectiveness.

Posted by: rickl at October 15, 2012 01:13 AM (sdi6R)
since its a neutered boy horse, particularly so.
No Uncle Horse is a cat rancher. he raised a mess of abandoned kittens in his stall. now he keeps them as pets and gets upset when he is stabled where he cant see them. So i have hive stabled by the hay barn where they now live, and when one also had kittens. He has been very injured and almost died, but through it all he has had the cats in and out of his stall and whe hes outside its not uncommon to see him standing gaurd over a pile of sleeping kittens.
i have heard of race horses that get attached to a dog or a chicken or a goat to the point they get upset if they aren't stabled with them but i had never seen it happen on my place till him. This is where the saying "got his goat" comes from. If you wanted to subtly mess up a horse favoured to win, before his race, steal his stable pal and hed wear himself out, unable to rest before the race. I can say this would work. Uncle horse has hysterics without his cats, and i mean full blown running in circles, hysteria.

If up/down state are polled honestly, NY is more like a D+10 state. The recession/depression has rendered the upstate NY economy comatose. Those people are NOT happy campers at all these days. Even the rural upstate Dems are likely to abandon Obama in significant numbers.

It's easy to develop a potassium deficiency...and not know you have it going on.
Especially for me...since I'd rather eat red meat and chocolate, as my primary food groups.
But fruits and veggies are our best source of potassium.
Low potassium intake can cause insomnia...or make it tough to sleep longer than a few hours.
At least in some people it can.
It does that to me.
I've never seen two sources agree on how much potassium we need, though.
It ranges from 1000 mg to 3000 mg per day.
A banana, an avocado and a large potato...would get you close to 1000 mg., if memory serves.
Sea salt has minerals in it, that regular table salt doesn't.
That's why it helps lower blood pressure.

So even being tested, it might show you're 'normal', but that's what's normal for some average that they're working from.
Which has to do with all the other things in our life, that we're eating, taking, etc.
When I have to take alergy meds...for example...they apparently leech the potassium out of my system.

It is absolutely amazing that the candidates don't agree to use qualified, non-partisan moderators. There are plenty available once you get away from the the media. A judge or professional mediator for example, could make a very good debate moderator.
I would have no moderator, just a clock person. Flip a coin, one guy starts, has 3 minutes to rip. Then the other guy gets 3 minutes and so on. No questions, let the candidates decide what they want to discuss.

They're the assholes who get to wave a magic wand over 40# bags at $27 and allow you to sell 3 oz of it for $9, but only if you contribute to their reelection campaigns, pay every bribe solicited, jump through every bureaucratic hoop, and thoroughly kiss their asses. Which is probably the type of potassium that is for human consumption?
Common KCl and the Gluconate form are both suitable for consumption. Which one a doctor prescribes might depend on your overall level of chlorides.
KCl is a dead simple inorganic molecule. The Gluconate form looks to be a lot more complex carbon chain organic with a bunch of hydroxyls hanging off it and only one K atom.
If you just wanted some extra potassium in the form of a NaCl substitute, the KCl would work fine.
If your doctor prescribed the Gluconate, they probably had a reason based on your lab test results, since the KCl forms, even as prescription drugs, would have to be a lot cheaper to make than that complex organic Gluconate molecule.

And I just found 'em.
They were in the rolling toolboxes right next to the fridge, in the sockets drawer.

Reading here on a bag of Lay's potato chips [the kind with sea salt]....it says, that a serving contains:
Potassium 360mg...............10% [of Daily Value].
A serving is "1oz. or about 18 chips".
So, if 360mg is 10% of the potassium you should get per day...then that's 3600mg a day.
Now that's what I mean.
You can never get the same figure from all these 'expert' sources, on how much potassium per day, you should be taking in.
I've found I feel better, no foot cramps...when I get around 1000mg a day.
It's hard to get 3600mg a day of potassium!
This bag of chips has "9 servings" in it.
That would be close.
But if I ate a bag of chips very often...I would end up looking like Candy Crowley.

I hope Barrack OopsIfuckedupistan, our greatest president evah, the singularly unequealled intellectual mind of the ages, was able to cram the past four years of his presidency into the 4 days he took off of the campaign trail to practice for the debates.
How does one cram 4 years into 4 days?
More importantly, why would a president need to cram/study about his own presidency?
Cram/Study stuff that happened that you were not involved with or didn't care about / pay attention to / have any intellectual curiosity about .... sure, but your own damn presidency?
Why would you want 4 more years of something you clearly didn't give two craps about the first 4 years?
I look FOREward to hearing him on tuesday and predict that if he makes the mistake of trying to stuff too many facts in his head about what actually has happened the last four years, he may have a stumble over the details moment and let some of his prize for everyone in their crackerjack box socialislamism slip out.

I have read that electric violin player Jean Luc Ponty (sp?) gave concerts like that ... but watching him play the themes, then sample/program them into a larger composition that then became his background music for the violin solo was part of the fun.
Posted by: Adriane at October 15, 2012 03:59 AM (/OhbZ)
I think it was Thomas Dolby who did a synth thing where he soloed this incredibly musical, orchestral work in realtime by recording, replaying, suppressing, and re-instrumenting loops. But I'm not thinking of something that creative.
Genesis had a long history of doing bass on pedals. It's trivial to have the main drum beats go whenever *any* pedal is in use, then use the pedalboard to indicate the key of the repeating bass figure. A standard Roland guitar synth can drive midi, and has a switch for either guitar or midi -- so you could do the main section's "call-and-response" from guitar riff to organ-like echo from a G-202 ( http://www.hillmanweb.com/hillgt19.html ) driving a regular guitar amp and a synth module. And the music itself is extremely simplistic and driving. It's conceivable to do this whole thing as a solo (rather than a bored and inattentive trio, as the video indicates).
That doesn't mean that it isn't enjoyable, and Abacab remains a crowd favorite in concerts....but it's an entertaining exercise to figure out how sparse you could run the arrangement.

The State Department has released a transcript of a briefing that two high-ranking department officials gave to a number of reporters via conference call on October 9 (Tuesday). I am not certain about this, but I believe the transcript was only made public today. You should read it in its entirety; it is the most detailed description I have seen of the events in Benghazi on September 11.
While this is by no means clear, it appears that the State Department may have released the transcript as part of the escalating conflict between Barack Obama and Joe Biden and the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. In their desperation to avoid responsibility for the Benghazi debacle, Obama and Biden have pointed fingers in two directions: at the intelligence community for reporting incorrectly that the incident was a protest over a YouTube video clip, and at the State Department for not providing adequate security for the Ambassador.
Here are some excerpts from the narrative:

The food companies kinda take care of that by default if you're not explicitly shopping a low-sodium diet. The amount of gratuitous NaCl dumped in stuff is incredible.
I figure salt and sugar gotta be cheaper than the actual food, since they dump so much of it into stuff.
My BP tends to be a bit on the low side, so I don't go out of my way to avoid NaCl. Even if I just chowed a whole bag of salty chips and shotgunned 3 energy drinks, I'd test just above a normal BP. Typical for me is somewhere in the 90-110 / 60-70 range.
The worst I've ever seen recently was 130/80 and that was stressed out of my mind with no sleep for 3 days.
When I was over 300lb it was crazy high heading for stroke city. I dumped 70lb and now I'm rolling phat.

@Purp,
I resent this a bit, and I like a whole bunch of what you have written. I'm an atheist, and if you loan me your weed whacker it will come back clean, oiled, and have a fully charged line feed head. It will still run too, or I will offer to replace it.
Why? Because I like to return borrowed things in better shape than I got them. That doesn't have anything to do with my atheism; it has to do with my innate sense of how I like to interact with others.
Tell me, if you loan your weed whacker to baldilocks, would you expect your weed whacker to be returned as you described at the top of this post? I mean, you know she is black. Would you be making these same preformed opinions?
I hope and doubt not. Give me, an unknown quantity, the same benefit of doubt.

I should have been more specific. I meant to refer to the leftist "activist" type atheists...you know, the ones that treat is as a defacto religion that actively seeks converts, proselytize, and attack anyone who does believe in something else.
I didn't mean to paint ordinary unobtrusive atheists with the same brush. Heck, a lot of the JINOS, nominal Catholics, and Protestants are effectively atheists. They just go through the motions because its what's expected socially.

Mike Oldfield composed it, and played the great majority of the instruments. Although he had produced the album a bit before, it was released ten days after his twentieth birthday. It's the foundation of two family fortunes -- Oldfield's, and Richard Branson's -- the album was the very first release (V2001) on Branson's new "Virgin Records" label. It'd be high on my list of "Desert Island Discs".

I felt that you would respond the way you did (this is good).
I spend a fair amount of time developing an internally consistent world view, that incorporates my world view with the dominant world view.
For example, I was married for 35 years and raised 2 kids under the concept of matrimony. Not exactly a wild eyed anarchist of the SDS mold,eh? Fuck Billy Ayers, known bomber of federal buildings.
People are different. Pigeonholing is hard and often wrong.

During the middle ages, there really wasn't any notion of police or organized law enforcement per se. When there was a problem, the locals just took care of it themselves. Early America on the frontiers was pretty much the same until the notion of circuit courts and sheriffs took hold.
The Army might dispense a bit of justice, but the frontier forts were few and far between. Much easier to just deal with it yourself.
The desert outside Vegas is probably a fracking people farm from all the summary justice the locals and mob dispensed to miscreants and cheaters.

From the broadest anthropological perspective, the notion of matrimony in hominids probably predates anything resembling religion by many thousands of years.
Critters have been pairing off to produce kids for quite a while. Some species are slutty whores (chickens for example), others pair for life. That's not a religious thing, that's a genetics thing we're hardwired with.

BUT -- are all serial killers necessarily "crazy" in an absolute sense, or is that a standard created by particular social structures?
I think psychologists who talk about the notion of "crazy" as a condition almost always have to do it within a specific social context.
ex. take a mush brained American liberal and put them in the context of old Sparta. The Spartans would think the dude was whacked out of his mind, and the liberal's head would explode when faced with Spartan notions of justice and social structure.
What is crazy here, may not be crazy somewhere else. Were all the various cannibalistic societies over the course of history crazy? They were societies chock full of serial killers.
If space aliens landed tomorrow, they're probably think we're all stark raving mad.

Yea. I think its possible to have someone who society would consider a "serial killer", who is in reality not "crazy" or even a threat to society at all because all they do is take out society's garbage that an inept legal system is unequipped to handle.
ex. for 10 or 12 years here in Palm Beach there was a family deeply involved in the drug trade that routinely murdered prosecution witnesses against them. It seemed like they were simply untouchable by the law for an unacceptable amount of time. Eventually, an FBI task force was called in when the body count go too embarrassing, and they went down.
Suppose some concerned citizen with some free time on his hands managed to take them out cleanly years prior, nobody would have shed a tear, nobody.
That's a scenario that's played out hundreds of times all over the country. Where the law is really hard pressed to deal with ultra hard core completely amoral bad guys.
If a "serial killer" targeted only those types who were essentially untouchable by the law, would that guy be "crazy", or the most sane dude on the planet?

That person would be a vigilante, not a serial killer. Which is the problem with "Dexter", as a concept. The show tries (well initially, anyway) to sell him as a serial killer, when he is just a vigilante. He is sadistic, but does not appear to have real sociopathic nature. There is a backstory with him having these traits when young, but "controls" them. That's fine, but he has way too much empathy with and for people, in the present, for this to work as his serial killer credentials. He's just a sadistic vigilante. Crazy due to the sadism, mostly.
Hey, teej.

...
At a training day in Salem Massachusetts in 1661, a drunken militiaman was made to ride "the wooden horse" for six hours, holding a jug of liquor in one hand and his musket in the other. Although used sparingly, the wooden horse was a punishment devise used by some New England militias. It was a replica of a horse, standing about four feet high, with a pointed back made of wood, which the victim was forced to sit on with a fifty pound weight tied to each foot. Although the wooden horse remained stationary, sitting on it was very uncomfortable, and after many hours, quite painful.
