— Maetenloch
Yesterday was the 946 year anniversary of the Normans' victory over King Harold at the battle of Hastings. And the fact that I used the word anniversary instead of say minds-day is just one of the many consequences of what could have been just a minor battle among some Northern European tribes:
It was one of the most consequential battles ever fought. It would set England on a course that eventually led to the establishment of the British Empire-and the foundation of the United States. The Norman Conquest left its stamp on English culture and politics in ways that are still with us; its impact on the development of the English language was especially strong. The Norman conquerors brought the French language with them, and while the English of the majority would ultimately triumph, the language that emerged from the Norman dominion would be profoundly changed. For two hundred years, English disappeared as a language of learned and powerful people. In the royal court and the palaces of the nobility, French was spoken. The Church continued to use Latin. English was the language in which rich people spoke to their servants. By the time the French conquerors began to assimilate to the language and culture of the people they had conquered, English had changed.
The Normans and the French gave us an utterly screwed spelling system but they also gave us a grammatically stripped-down language (easy to learn but hard too spel korekly) and essentially a doubled vocabulary.
An ear for the difference between Saxon and Norman-French based words remains important even in popular literature. In the Harry Potter books, the good characters often have trustworthy Saxon or Celtic surnames (Weasley, Dumbledore) while you can tell the bad guys by their evil French names like Malfoy (bad faith) and Voldemort (flight of death). "Muggles" is about as Anglo-Saxon as an invented word can get, and to English ears it sounds like a word that ought to exist even if you have never heard it before.
That said I still blame the French and society for my misfortunes. They made me what I am.
Circle Dances and Leaving the Liberal Fold
Here Neo-neocon reflects on what it's probably like for Buzz Bissinger as he moves away from being a liberal.
We all want to dance in a ring, to a certain extent. It's wonderful to be part of a coherent movement, a whole that makes sense, joined with others working for the same goal and sharing the same beliefs. But there's a price to pay when something challenges the tenets of that movement. When that happens, there are two kinds of people: those who change their ideas to fit the new facts, even if it means leaving the fold, and those who distort and twist the facts and logic to maintain the circle dance.
Dennis Prager has long noted that most American Jews may be ethnically Jewish and practice Jewish rituals but their true religion is liberalism. Well that's true for most people on the left too. And when you no longer join in the liberal circle dances, it's apostasy.
George Will: Jimmy Carter is a Mother-Fucking Liar
Okay two things - this is old (2005) and he didn't use those exact words but if you understand Will-speak, that's clearly what he meant. Carter has long peddled the false story that George Will stole his debate briefing book and gave it to Reagan and has blamed his 1980 loss on this. Well Will was not pleased:
That last accusation, for which there is no evidence, is, as he has been told, false. But he is a recidivist fibber. Last Oct. 21, on National Public Radio, he said: "We found out later that one of Ronald Reagan's supporters inside the White House had stolen my briefing book, my top-secret briefing book that prepared me for the debate. And a very prominent news reporter was the one who took the briefing book to Ronald Reagan and helped drill him on the things that I might say if he said certain things." Asked who that reporter was, Carter replied, "It was George Will, and it was later known that he did that."
But one cannot know what isn't so, and "top secret" is a government classification inapplicable to campaign fodder. Still, Carter continues to retail -- and to embroider -- his fable.
...So strong, however, is the human impulse to believe comforting myths that Carter probably will continue to promulgate the fiction that I gave Reagan the utterly unimportant briefing book, thereby catalyzing the 1980 landslide. But to be fair: As a candidate, Carter promised only that as president he would never tell a lie, thereby leaving himself a loophole for his post-presidential career as a fabulist.
Carter has always been a nasty man and as well as a notorious cat-killer.
Don't fret - because you can still score a complete Boba Fett adult costume for just $499.

The Great Government Meteor Grab?
"New regulations by the Federal government define asteroidal material to be an antiquity, like arrowheads and pottery, rather than a mineral - and, therefore, not subject to U.S. mining law or eligible for mining claims. At the moment, these regulations only apply to asteroidal materials that have fallen to Earth as meteorites. However, they create a precedent that could adversely affect the plans of companies such as Planetary Resources, who intend to mine asteroids in space."

It wasn't frogs; it was mercenaries hired from all across Europe.
The Bastard imported the frogs later on, to help with the administration.
And don't forget that Harold's army was fresh off fighting another battle on the other side of England, against Harald Hadrada of Norway. The army was tired out -from the battle AND the march - and wounded. Even then it was a close thing.

#30:
In the middle of the school year, having the teachers out on strike in a world without stay-at-home moms means a crisis for families. Someone needs to take care of the the kids, and there is only so much vacation that you can take all at once. Caving means getting out of the jam while passing the costs on to other people, mostly.
I'll be tagged as sexist, but the loss of the stay-at-home mom was a tragedy for society. I get the security and value of a married woman having her own job, but losing the parent-at-home changed a lot of things for the worse.

There is no point, from society's perspective, for a public sector union.
Schools are of course a special source of concern - since the government already forces you to pay for public schools, your ability to send your children to private school is often nominal.
Teachers are generally over credentialed and overpaid anyway to be honest. I have no doubt that your average class of snowflakes is a pain to teach - but when you consider that teachers make twice as much as say a career NCO, I just don't see the argument that they are underpaid...

Carter has long peddled the false story that George Will stole his debate briefing book and gave it to Reagan and has blamed his 1980 loss on this.
Actually that makes him even sillier than before. Either he's most likely just sore that he lost and acting like a whiny child, or even better, that actually happened, and as the President of the United States with access to all sorts of security enhanced installments, he just left a supposedly Top Secret document laying around like an imbecile.
What a maroon!

It's being passed off as a fuck up by the career State Department employees, thus not a mistake by the political State Department members. The bureaucracy of the State Department is usually at odds with the White House, and this is just a way for the White House to look like they are not at fault. It will backfire, it always does because the bureaucrats have time and sensitive documents on their side. Documents that the White House would love to never see the light of day. Think "Wikilinks", but more embarrassing to the choomheads.

She might take you up on that, if Huma is out of town.
This one may be close to as simple as it seems. Unlike Captain Wonderful, Hillary knows that stand-up people in charge take responsibility. Knowing that she was being hit with the blame by Obama and his people, this was by far her best tactical move. Now she looks better than him by contrast. In effect, she has said "Yes, I take responsibility for my department. Your move, asshole."

Friend --
Day after day, night after night, I've sat by Barack Obama's side as he made one gutsy decision after the other.
I get to see firsthand what drives this man. I get to see his enormous heart.
Tomorrow night, Barack is going to get up on that stage and debate Governor Romney for the presidency. He's going to fight for the things we believe in.
Do me a favor -- let him know you're with him before the debate, because it's time for you to get on board.
Make a donation of $5 or more today -- just 23 cents per day until November 6th.
When I had my turn on the debate stage last week, I spoke about the things we've accomplished together -- the values we all share.
That's exactly what Barack's going to do tomorrow night.
So as we enter the final days of this campaign, and before all of the work we've been doing in the field gets put to one, final test, let's show Barack what kind of grassroots organization he's got behind him -- one that's ready for whatever comes ahead.
Any donation you can make today, no matter how large or small, matters. Please don't wait any longer -- chip in $5 or more for the last days of this campaign:
Thanks,
Joe
P.S. -- The day after tomorrow happens to be the last FEC fundraising deadline of this campaign. If you've been waiting for the right time to make your donation, you've got it -- right now.
Let's hope that Obama does, indeed, do exactly what Joe Biden did last week.

UPDATE: The 2012 GCI report issued September 5 downgraded the U.S. two more points from fifth to seventh on the second day of the Democratic national convention (See todayÂ’s Drudge Report).
The World Economic Forum’s apolitical Global Competitiveness Index reinforces the “restore America’s greatness” mantra of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. It confirms that the American free enterprise system suffered serious setbacks under Obama. The GCI shows that the very things that Conservatives criticize — wasteful government spending, unsustainable deficits, burdensome regulations, crony capitalism, lack of government transparency, and business mistrust of government institutions– are indeed dragging down the US economy and must be corrected and soon.

The area is called the National Petroleum Reserve because in 1976 Congress designated it as a strategic oil and natural gas stockpile to meet the “energy needs of the nation.” Alaska favors exploration in nearly the entire reserve. The feds had been reviewing four potential development plans, and the state of Alaska had strongly objected to the most restrictive of the four. Sure enough, that was the plan Interior chose.

IMHO, based on what I've drawn from his personality and background, Barry didn't do things with cool kids to be cool. Barry considered himself the benchmark of cool. Doing what Barry did made you cool. Was he a cokehead? Barry would do as much blow as he could get his hands on. Ditto everything else that came in baggies. No restraint, no brakes. He has/had the drug appetite of a T.Rex. I know the Barry type well.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at October 15, 2012 07:57 PM (piMMO)
Not really. I'm just doing a major life triage as part of retasking rooms. Tossing crap is kinda liberating. I'm going on the 1/5 rule right now...have I used it in the past year, or do I anticipate using it within the next years. If the answer is no to both questions, it hits the curb.
One of the things I've been doing is deploying "rediscovered stuff" to extract value from it. ex. I found some buried spice racks, mounted them and put my spices in them. That moved them from the "crap" category to useful.
The closets in the smaller bedrooms in the joint are shallow and wide, so the areas to the side of the door tends to be inaccessible and collect crap. The master BR's closet is deep and doesn't have those natural crap collection points.

Yes, and I'd be up for removing public sector unions in schools, and generally, too. Or vouchers, or a lot of options. All good. And all requiring advance planning and a huge effort. You can't wait for the strike to do them.
I'd start with making teacher strikes illegal - that's clean, easy, and probably the more politically palatable.

Here's the easiest way to impress and intimidate the academic Left -- have travel stories from places they've never been.
The campus Left loves to think of themselves world travelers -- unlike those rubes and hicks who don't even have passports. The more exotic, the more dangerous, the better
It's a status game. And if your travels are more exotic than theirs then you win.

The left also fetishizes the 3rd world too, but that would include the muslim world.
Around here the libs love them some 3rd world restaruants. A fucking Ethiopian restaruant opened here a couple of years ago, and I pissed off some liberal acquatinces when I said they must be serving rice in cups of water with decor consisting of armed waiters and chairs made of burlap bags with "A Gift from the United Nations" stenciled on the side.

Like, did he belong to Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years b/c he truly fervently believed in the "religion" Wright preaches or because he had to to gain credibility with the black community he wanted to vote for him?

I was referring specifically to his younger days. But, he has always been something, besides a hedonist. A narcissist. That's like a full time job, for Barry. He would certainly become more flexible and restrained in later years, for obvious reasons. But, Barry doesn't do things because he thinks it will make him cool. He might do, though, if he thinks it will make him COOLER. Barry does something because he's cool. Wright's church? Yeah, he'll do that, since he's coooool. It may not sound like a big difference, but it is.

If motor runs check the belt that runs off the motor (most vacuums have one. If motor no run check the brushes besides the switches and wires. Sometimes the wires run in tight places and wear and short or break. Certain metal alloys used in wires get brittle with heat/use then break.
I know a guy who does quite well fixing old vacuums and other small appliances. Takes lots and lots of experience to make money at it though. (and an outlet for repaired but unclaimed stuff or a place to take junk appliances for free)

The oncologist put her on Femara and it helped but we all know it isn't a cure. I spoke to her today and she sounded tired and she was in pain. My sister stopped to see her tonight and she was shaking and couldn't keep her balance, her sugar had flared up to 367. They have found another large growth in her back and she is at CAT scan right now. Prognosis is not good. I knew this was coming but you always believe there is more time.

Being a newbie, I asked 'How do we know which is the shuttle?'
In my defense, there were lots of lights circling the area as you might imagine. We were in Boca Raton, not across the bay.
One of the other writers says, 'Honey, trust me!' - she could talk like that being from Texas, and all - 'after you see your first nigh launch, you'll never ask again!'
Holy MF! Moly, was she right!

Oh, you lucky, lucky....dog. I never got to do that, and now the era of shuttles is over. I've seen video, and it's amazing -- a spark on the horizon (they don't let you get that close) which turns into the wild Force of the world channeled by man into flinging a speck into the heavens. That so much raw power can be quietly assembled over days, then unleashed in such a way in seconds, is nothing short of amazing.

@486 Speaking of addiction, nicotine is one of the most difficult drugs to withdraw from. It's not as intense a withdrawal but it lasts much longer, the withdrawing phase, that is. Lasts for weeks and sometimes months. And the failure rate is very high.
Nicotine not only opens up the pleasure centers in the brain but can act as both a sedative and a stimulant, a very pleasant "alert relaxation." Also suppresses the appetite. One of the reasons it's so difficult to kick is that despite all its negatives it does have psychological and pharmacological benefits. Another reason it's so addictive is that one can keep on dosing without the harmful intoxicating and thus limiting effects common to other drugs.

If you quit cold turkey, nicotine withdrawal peaks at 72 hours and lasts about five days. I've quit and restarted nicotine so many times it isn't funny. The key to success is to clear your schedule and not expect to get much done for the next 5 days.

Our spelling sucks but nothing is perfect.
Our spelling sucks because Dr. Johnson was, at least on this score, an asshole. He's responsible for selecting funky, non-phonetic spellings for English words, where various letter combinations often have more than one pronounciation (e.g., "lead;" is that the antonym of "follow," or a metal used in bullets?).
Envy the Krauts in this respect, where all words are spelled phonetically. I don't think they bother with spelling tests and such; what would be the point?

Yep, past associations and limited-hangout statements about them is something any other politician would have to answer to.
But when we have an assassinated ambassador, 2 Navy SEALS and a state worker whose murder on the 11th anniversery of September 11th at the hands of al-Qaeda affiliates was obscured in a likely political cover-up spanning 2 weeks, the President, Secretary of State and Ambassador to the UN, which is barely being investigated and pushed by the media -- such stories about Obama's past just sort of fade away...

I'm assuming you're talking about english? I tried a few years of latin and ancient egyptian, and it drove me fucking crazy. Three words in latin would do what 10 words in english would do because the rules were so different. There were all these rules and tenses and word endings that totally changed the meanings. Genitive this, and nominative that and accusative this and holy shit.....
I just couldn't get my head around it. Although it probably would have helped if I knew the rules of english to start with. lol

"The more vocabulary we possess, the more efficient are these tools of thought. With a good vocabulary, which indicates scope of knowledge, we grasp the thoughts of others and be able to communicate our own thoughts to them.
As early as the 1930s, the HEL found a close relationship between a large, precise knowledge of English words and achievement in life. Worldly success, earnings and management status correlated with vocabulary scores. In follow-up studies of persons tested as much as twenty or thirty years ago, a limited vocabulary is proving an important factor in holding men and women back from achieving the position which their aptitudes showed they should have gained. The truth is that low vocabulary decreases the effectiveness of inborn gifts in any civilization."

Nicotine only feels good when you're in withdrawal. Remember the first time you tried it? You felt sick and wanted to puke. That's how it will feel now after 15 years. If you want to relive the old feeling you will have to readdict yourself first.

I have no idea how much it deviated from the original story, but if Crichton stayed true to his ambition, it proved that your average modern human could still enjoy the saga.

Dumbing down your native communication capability for a particular audience is easy, smartening it up is impossible.
There's only a small handful of people I interact with in person that I can exercise my full vocabulary on. Out on the street interacting with the general public, you gotta keep it to "see the dog" kinda shit...even with college grads sometimes.

Carter appears to be of the bizarre idea that those movies where one football team steals another team's playbook and thereby has a game winning advantage. In real life there are no plays so secret and dazzling as to be game deciders. The better team wins, especially if the better team is MUCH better.
So it goes for debates. You either have credible ideas and the ability to present them convincingly or you don't. No amount of information given to your opponent in advance can change that. Especially the ideas in question are your actual principles and you actually believe in them. Sincerity matters, unless you're a leftist.

I've been there. Here's what happens: you have fond memories of lighting up and it feeling good. So you decide to light up, just once, but it doesn't feel good. Then you think, WTF, it didn't work, let me try again. The second time it feels a little good, but not much. So you try again. The third time's the charm.
The good feeling comes from the relief of withdrawal symptoms. The first time there are no withdrawal symptoms so it feels like crap. The second time there are withdrawal symptoms from the first time so it feels a little good. By the third time you're an addict again.

In its court papers, the Justice Department says the Constitution does not permit the courts to resolve the political dispute between the executive branch and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that is seeking the records. The political branches have a long history of resolving disputes over congressional requests without judicial intervention, the court filing said.
Doesn't this sort of ignore ...
United States v. Nixon, 418 U.S. 683 (1974), was a landmark United States Supreme Court decision. It was a unanimous 8-0 ruling falling against President Richard Nixon and was important to the late stages of the Watergate scandal. It is considered a crucial precedent limiting the power of any U.S. president.

Over the centuries, it has added jargon, it has cross-purposed nouns for adverbs, it has bolted on tenses and moods, it has taken on characteristics from computer programming languages (watch the quotes), and creatively embraced irony.....among other things.
It may be the best way to communicate a thought that exists in the world today.......and if it isn't, it might be in a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately, the 2nd clarinet has a lot of rests.

We have never faced a situation like this where a completely lawless criminal executive uses its own enforcement arms to subvert the law to the extent that's going on now. Not even Watergate was this bad.
The framers never anticipated this level of lawlessness and malevolence would ever exist in the executive.

@PurpAv "I've got some old school primers printed in the 1800's. Flipping through those makes one lament the state of public education today. We have fallen far, very far."
A few years ago, I read an outstanding series of books called, "The Wilderness Empire" (or something to that effect). The series takes place in North America (1600s-1800) and is a mix of facts (events) and assumed dialogue between the actual historical figures. However, there are countless actual letters written during the period included in the books. Even the prose written by "commoners" and so-called "uneducated" farmers and foot soldiers would humble a modern day English professor.

My one and only experience with the Shuttle program was a very bad one. I live on the MS Coast, and due to the entry path the Columbia was taking that am, it was supposed to pass almost directly overhead on it's way to Cape Canaveral. So once I saw it had entered the atmosphere on the net, I headed outside to see it fly over.
The expected time of it's passage came and went, so I waited a bit more and headed back inside only to find out that it had broken up over Texas.

Sad day. I remember when it happened. I was waiting in the car for my father after getting a haircut. The news came across the radio. A few minutes later my dad came to the car after finishing up his own haircut. I told him and he said "No you're getting confused, somebody is talking about Challenger". A few minutes later he was almost crying.

My guess is that they were such earthy, pagan, down to earth types that bodily function terms weren't considered all that dirty.
