A Bad Day For Harold

Yesterday was the 946 year anniversary of the Normans' victory over King Harold at the battle of Hastings. And the fact that I used the word anniversary instead of say minds-day is just one of the many consequences of what could have been just a minor battle among some Northern European tribes:

It was one of the most consequential battles ever fought. It would set England on a course that eventually led to the establishment of the British Empire-and the foundation of the United States. The Norman Conquest left its stamp on English culture and politics in ways that are still with us; its impact on the development of the English language was especially strong. The Norman conquerors brought the French language with them, and while the English of the majority would ultimately triumph, the language that emerged from the Norman dominion would be profoundly changed. For two hundred years, English disappeared as a language of learned and powerful people. In the royal court and the palaces of the nobility, French was spoken. The Church continued to use Latin. English was the language in which rich people spoke to their servants. By the time the French conquerors began to assimilate to the language and culture of the people they had conquered, English had changed.

clovellhastingsstitched

The Normans and the French gave us an utterly screwed spelling system but they also gave us a grammatically stripped-down language (easy to learn but hard too spel korekly) and essentially a doubled vocabulary.

An ear for the difference between Saxon and Norman-French based words remains important even in popular literature. In the Harry Potter books, the good characters often have trustworthy Saxon or Celtic surnames (Weasley, Dumbledore) while you can tell the bad guys by their evil French names like Malfoy (bad faith) and Voldemort (flight of death). "Muggles" is about as Anglo-Saxon as an invented word can get, and to English ears it sounds like a word that ought to exist even if you have never heard it before.

That said I still blame the French and society for my misfortunes. They made me what I am.

Circle Dances and Leaving the Liberal Fold

Here Neo-neocon reflects on what it's probably like for Buzz Bissinger as he moves away from being a liberal.

We all want to dance in a ring, to a certain extent. It's wonderful to be part of a coherent movement, a whole that makes sense, joined with others working for the same goal and sharing the same beliefs. But there's a price to pay when something challenges the tenets of that movement. When that happens, there are two kinds of people: those who change their ideas to fit the new facts, even if it means leaving the fold, and those who distort and twist the facts and logic to maintain the circle dance.

Dennis Prager has long noted that most American Jews may be ethnically Jewish and practice Jewish rituals but their true religion is liberalism. Well that's true for most people on the left too. And when you no longer join in the liberal circle dances, it's apostasy.

George Will: Jimmy Carter is a Mother-Fucking Liar

Okay two things - this is old (2005) and he didn't use those exact words but if you understand Will-speak, that's clearly what he meant. Carter has long peddled the false story that George Will stole his debate briefing book and gave it to Reagan and has blamed his 1980 loss on this. Well Will was not pleased:

That last accusation, for which there is no evidence, is, as he has been told, false. But he is a recidivist fibber. Last Oct. 21, on National Public Radio, he said: "We found out later that one of Ronald Reagan's supporters inside the White House had stolen my briefing book, my top-secret briefing book that prepared me for the debate. And a very prominent news reporter was the one who took the briefing book to Ronald Reagan and helped drill him on the things that I might say if he said certain things." Asked who that reporter was, Carter replied, "It was George Will, and it was later known that he did that."
But one cannot know what isn't so, and "top secret" is a government classification inapplicable to campaign fodder. Still, Carter continues to retail -- and to embroider -- his fable.

...So strong, however, is the human impulse to believe comforting myths that Carter probably will continue to promulgate the fiction that I gave Reagan the utterly unimportant briefing book, thereby catalyzing the 1980 landslide. But to be fair: As a candidate, Carter promised only that as president he would never tell a lie, thereby leaving himself a loophole for his post-presidential career as a fabulist.

Carter has always been a nasty man and as well as a notorious cat-killer.

The Great Government Meteor Grab?

"New regulations by the Federal government define asteroidal material to be an antiquity, like arrowheads and pottery, rather than a mineral - and, therefore, not subject to U.S. mining law or eligible for mining claims. At the moment, these regulations only apply to asteroidal materials that have fallen to Earth as meteorites. However, they create a precedent that could adversely affect the plans of companies such as Planetary Resources, who intend to mine asteroids in space."

14 'Lo, 'rons and 'ettes. Mixed day for me: Finally got to buy a vehicle after using Dad's truck for the six months since the move to Oklahoma. I'm grateful he loaned it to me, but I'm glad I can take that responsibility again. The flip side is, now that I have a car payment again, I don't have the money to keep my web station, Project 42 Radio, operating. I'll have to shut down at the end of the month. It was a fun 3-1/2 year run programming a station the way I wanted.

17 The French invasion of the English language is interesting. As the nobles used french, most of the now-English words for *abstractions* and property and such are French-derived. Meanwhile, the English terms for things the commoners were familiar with -- spoons, cows, horseshoes, thatch, and suchlike -- remained English.

#30:

In the middle of the school year, having the teachers out on strike in a world without stay-at-home moms means a crisis for families. Someone needs to take care of the the kids, and there is only so much vacation that you can take all at once. Caving means getting out of the jam while passing the costs on to other people, mostly.

I'll be tagged as sexist, but the loss of the stay-at-home mom was a tragedy for society. I get the security and value of a married woman having her own job, but losing the parent-at-home changed a lot of things for the worse.

91 "In the middle of the school year, having the teachers out on strike in a world without stay-at-home moms means a crisis for families. Someone needs to take care of the the kids, and there is only so much vacation that you can take all at once. Caving means getting out of the jam while passing the costs on to other people, mostly." Another option is to make teacher strikes illegal and enforce it. This is what happened in Michigan. There hasn't been a strike in Michigan as far as I know, since the 80's. It's enforced with fines or something. The people in Illinois don't have the guts to put a stop to it.

I'd go a step further - any public sector union should be illegal, as should public sector strikes.

There is no point, from society's perspective, for a public sector union.

Schools are of course a special source of concern - since the government already forces you to pay for public schools, your ability to send your children to private school is often nominal.

Teachers are generally over credentialed and overpaid anyway to be honest. I have no doubt that your average class of snowflakes is a pain to teach - but when you consider that teachers make twice as much as say a career NCO, I just don't see the argument that they are underpaid...

Re: Hastings, sometimes the wrong people win, as with Carter and L'il Barry (not that McCain (nor Ford, for that matter), war hero that he is, was the right guy: he's not even a Republican). Luckily, or Providentially, Moses won in The Battle of the Wilderness, and the Declogue still rules. Nonetheless, failure to take care of business means that various members of various tribes still peel off to the Cult of Death and worship of Moloch. If Moses, a made man (Ex 2,12), failed to TCB with the false god, didn't that leave a lasting legacy? Even in winning, if the right guy dies, and the wrong guy sets about, over two terms in the White House, to destroy yeoman agriculture and stifle the development of flying cars (Ezra Taft Benson and Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956), we're left withthe Cold War, millions of Liberty Lovers dead world-wide, when Patton would have cut the effin' Commies off at the knees before we lost China, before the Russkies stole the bomb: for 50 bonus points, how many million tons of aid did we send Stalin per year in WW II?

Second part of the procedure is next week, so we hope that will ease her pain. I am just tired, from sleeping on hospital cots. And eating hospital food-although they were really sweet to bring me food, since I was "an attending parent." And I wasn't trying to be snarky about the ergot-that was one of those factoids that I had stuffed in the brain-pan, and it comes up periodically. 208 I don't see where HRC takes responsibility. All I think she is saying is that AFTER the attack, she worked tirelessly. From NBC: "Rather than focusing on who to blame for the attacks, the State Department stayed "focused not on why something happened that was for the intelligence community to determine, but what was happening and could happen,” Clinton said. “We did everything we could to keep our people safe, which is my primary responsibility.” So AFTER the attack, State put an extra pot of coffee on and figured out how to keep people safe. I don't see her taking responsibility for the lack of security. From NBC: "Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday in an interview with NBC News that she worked day and night following the fatal attacks on the Benghazi consulate to ensure the safety of other government workers abroad. I think this is carefully crafted. She is not taking the fall.

I have a recipe for cassoulet that includes duck, garlic sausage, pork shoulder, lamb (optional - I like lamb, but many people do not, so I've left it out), white beans and a half a cup of bacon grease. I make it once a year because it takes hours to prepare and because I don't want to die of a heart attack. Believe me, it's great stuff. The French are fuck ups, but they do have wonderful food. The Brits? Well, I spent a semester in England many years ago. There is no swill on the face of the earth that compares to English cafeteria food. One morning, I thought the greasy fried eggs they served us tasted very weird, but I couldn't grasp why, exactly. Then it occurred to me - they had served greasy fish and chips the night before and hadn't cleaned off the grill properly. The eggs tasted like fish.

It's being passed off as a fuck up by the career State Department employees, thus not a mistake by the political State Department members. The bureaucracy of the State Department is usually at odds with the White House, and this is just a way for the White House to look like they are not at fault. It will backfire, it always does because the bureaucrats have time and sensitive documents on their side. Documents that the White House would love to never see the light of day. Think "Wikilinks", but more embarrassing to the choomheads.

259 English has all the hallmarks of actually being a pidgin language. Simplification in grammer, the dropping of noun gender and declanation, &c.

Yeah, some Oxford guy called "J R R Tolkien" offered an argument to that effect, that English started out as a Frisian dialect spoken by Welshmen. Even before the Bastard stomped in and made Norman French the prestige-language.

She might take you up on that, if Huma is out of town.

This one may be close to as simple as it seems. Unlike Captain Wonderful, Hillary knows that stand-up people in charge take responsibility. Knowing that she was being hit with the blame by Obama and his people, this was by far her best tactical move. Now she looks better than him by contrast. In effect, she has said "Yes, I take responsibility for my department. Your move, asshole."

302 Subject: Hey, do me a favor

Friend --

Day after day, night after night, I've sat by Barack Obama's side as he made one gutsy decision after the other.

I get to see firsthand what drives this man. I get to see his enormous heart.

Tomorrow night, Barack is going to get up on that stage and debate Governor Romney for the presidency. He's going to fight for the things we believe in.

Do me a favor -- let him know you're with him before the debate, because it's time for you to get on board.

Make a donation of $5 or more today -- just 23 cents per day until November 6th.

When I had my turn on the debate stage last week, I spoke about the things we've accomplished together -- the values we all share.

That's exactly what Barack's going to do tomorrow night.

So as we enter the final days of this campaign, and before all of the work we've been doing in the field gets put to one, final test, let's show Barack what kind of grassroots organization he's got behind him -- one that's ready for whatever comes ahead.

Any donation you can make today, no matter how large or small, matters. Please don't wait any longer -- chip in $5 or more for the last days of this campaign:

Thanks,

Joe

P.S. -- The day after tomorrow happens to be the last FEC fundraising deadline of this campaign. If you've been waiting for the right time to make your donation, you've got it -- right now.

Let's hope that Obama does, indeed, do exactly what Joe Biden did last week.

The body pieces are supposed to stick to the body suit via velcro attachments, but they are completely flat -- zero body contour -- so they look completely ridiculous, if they stay on at all. 313 Primordial Pair: The point is that "The Truth" is IRRELEVANT. Even if Barack IS a Muslim (and frankly I think he has no gods before himself) -- IT DOESN'T MATTER. Anyone who would vote against him because he's a Muslim is ALREADY voting against him because he's an arrogant incompetent fuckup. And everyone who is voting for him wouldn't care if he was a muslim -- or would be utterly unconvinced by some stupid blurry photos with scribbly lines added. This is a non-story. It is so irrelevant I could well believe it is an Axelrodian plant designed to drag the national debate off into equisitely trivial issues instead of addressing the much more pressing problem that the fucking President of the United States is an arrogant fuckup. I understand the desire for a magic wand that will convince all these mush-brained liberals that their little tin messiah is a fraud and a liar. But that magic wand doesn't exist. One blurry photo with scribbly lines won't do it. If America is to be liberated from the Obama occupation, it will be by the hard, unglamorous work of an election. It will be by citizen journalists publicizing the stories that matter -- the exploding national debt, the failure of Obama's foreign policy, the lies and deceptions his regime puts out hourly. FORGET ABOUT THE STUPID FUCKING RING.

354 The 2010-2011 GCI report warns that our lack of macroeconomic stability will “likely weigh heavily on the country’s future growth.” The U.S.’s government-deficit ranking (139) is matched by Greece, Botswana and Swaziland. (No surprise that the Europeans did not want to be lectured by Timothy Geithner).

UPDATE: The 2012 GCI report issued September 5 downgraded the U.S. two more points from fifth to seventh on the second day of the Democratic national convention (See todayÂ’s Drudge Report).

The World Economic Forum’s apolitical Global Competitiveness Index reinforces the “restore America’s greatness” mantra of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. It confirms that the American free enterprise system suffered serious setbacks under Obama. The GCI shows that the very things that Conservatives criticize — wasteful government spending, unsustainable deficits, burdensome regulations, crony capitalism, lack of government transparency, and business mistrust of government institutions– are indeed dragging down the US economy and must be corrected and soon.

360 If America is to be liberated from the Obama occupation, it will be by the hard, unglamorous work of an election. Actually, it should be by impeachment and trial. If we still had any law left ... If you have come to the point where you think that one can break any law he wants and is then only liable to possibly not be re-elected ... then it's all over, already. It will be by citizen journalists publicizing the stories that matter -- the exploding national debt, the failure of Obama's foreign policy, the lies and deceptions his regime puts out hourly. Everyone knows all about ALL of these. People have known all of this shit for years. I don't know why you think you are going to being some magic dust to these issues that have been in public for YEARS and that will change something. Everyone knows about the debt. Everyone knows about the failure of his foreign policy. Everyone knows about his lies and deceptions. But much of America likes them and is happy to see this nation go straight down the shitter. We have gone well past a critical mass of people who hate the nation and what we stand for, which is why those who violate the Constitution (and Barky has done that like no one else in history has ever even come close to - orders of magnitude of difference) must be held accountable to the Constitution, not to the electorate. FORGET ABOUT THE STUPID FUCKING RING. Posted by: Trimegistus at October 15, 2012 11:37 PM (yWIC7) The ring was an interesting story that was relevant. That it was in error is no big deal. 362 Obama fetishizes the Islamic world. It's part of what made him exciting and exotic. Here's the easiest way to impress and intimidate the academic Left -- have travel stories from places they've never been. The campus Left loves to think of themselves world travelers -- unlike those rubes and hicks who don't even have passports. The more exotic, the more dangerous, the better It's a status game. And if your travels are more exotic than theirs then you win.

367 President Obama is campaigning as a champion of the oil and gas boom heÂ’s had nothing to do with, and even as his regulators try to stifle it. The latest example is the Interior DepartmentÂ’s little-noticed August decision to close off from drilling nearly half of the 23.5 million acre National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska.

The area is called the National Petroleum Reserve because in 1976 Congress designated it as a strategic oil and natural gas stockpile to meet the “energy needs of the nation.” Alaska favors exploration in nearly the entire reserve. The feds had been reviewing four potential development plans, and the state of Alaska had strongly objected to the most restrictive of the four. Sure enough, that was the plan Interior chose.

IMHO, based on what I've drawn from his personality and background, Barry didn't do things with cool kids to be cool. Barry considered himself the benchmark of cool. Doing what Barry did made you cool. Was he a cokehead? Barry would do as much blow as he could get his hands on. Ditto everything else that came in baggies. No restraint, no brakes. 379 The biggest difference with English (and what makes it the most flexible and strongest language around) is that English separated the nouns and the verbs (made words just "words", with nothing being a noun or a verb innately - generally) and constructed all sentences with acute attention paid to the time interval over which the action occurs. It is this time interval and the flexible manner of constructiing and describing it that seems to separate english from all others.

387 omg, are you one of those hoarders?

Not really.   I'm just doing a major life triage as part of retasking rooms.  Tossing crap is kinda liberating.    I'm going on the 1/5 rule right now...have I used it in the past year, or do I anticipate using it within the next years.  If the answer is no to both questions, it hits the curb.

One of the things I've been doing is deploying "rediscovered stuff" to extract value from it.  ex. I found some buried spice racks, mounted them and put my spices in them.  That moved them from the "crap" category to useful.

The closets in the smaller bedrooms in the joint are shallow and wide, so the areas to the side of the door tends to be inaccessible and collect crap.  The master BR's closet is deep and doesn't have those natural crap collection points.

"Another option is to make teacher strikes illegal and enforce it."

Yes, and I'd be up for removing public sector unions in schools, and generally, too. Or vouchers, or a lot of options. All good. And all requiring advance planning and a huge effort. You can't wait for the strike to do them.

I'd start with making teacher strikes illegal - that's clean, easy, and probably the more politically palatable.

419 367 Obama fetishizes the Islamic world. It's part of what made him exciting and exotic.

Here's the easiest way to impress and intimidate the academic Left -- have travel stories from places they've never been.

The campus Left loves to think of themselves world travelers -- unlike those rubes and hicks who don't even have passports. The more exotic, the more dangerous, the better

It's a status game. And if your travels are more exotic than theirs then you win.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at October 15, 2012 11:49 PM (ZPrif)

The left also fetishizes the 3rd world too, but that would include the muslim world.

Around here the libs love them some 3rd world restaruants. A fucking Ethiopian restaruant opened here a couple of years ago, and I pissed off some liberal acquatinces when I said they must be serving rice in cups of water with decor consisting of armed waiters and chairs made of burlap bags with "A Gift from the United Nations" stenciled on the side.

425 @411 @376 you know, i bet his numbers are a little low, given the 80's, and i bet further that obama most certainly wasn't a "cokehead"...because those are pretty rare even among the moneyed party types! cocaine is actually not a physically habituating drug. it causes compulsive usage while on it for having such a short duration of action and such an acute limbic reward, but there's nothing like a "cocaine withdrawal" as there is in the cases of opioids and benzodiazepenes (and alcohol, for that matter). now, the anecdotal comedowns are supposed to be pretty harsh. come to think of it, who the heck would even WANT to do a drug that makes you feel good for 15 minutes and then leaves you feeling horrible for the rest of the night??? i don't even like having more than one drink for the bad feeling i get when they wear off later on. i can't imagine something like cocaine. that being said, i seem to remember plenty of open speculation that bush "probably used coke" in his "fratboy" days, and what an unfit commander-in-chief and presidential example that made him. i think the speculation comes entirely from bush's recorded statement that he wouldn't want youth making the "same mistakes he made"...why "cocaine" is the go-to "mistake of youth" in the minds of hollywood liberal types is anyone's guess >.> next comes a messiah who freely admits that he did cocaine, and suddenly it's no longer an obstacle to being a good commander-in-chief or example to the youth. hell, everyone ought to do a little blow, expand their horizons a bit. -.- when can we get a news station that is dedicated to just pointing out other news stations' and pundits' hyprocrisy? that would be a 24/7 incumbency.

427 I'm told a crock pot can be handy for cleaning up decades of encrusted baked on oily gunk off model airplane engines.  You fill it with antifreeze, set it on low, and a few days later all the baked on gunk just falls off the engine.

I've seen many people attest that this works.  I presume it would work with any baked on black gunk.

428 An interesting straw in the wind... I live in a very, very left-wing neighborhood in Portland, Oregon (I'd guess 95%+ Democrat). The last few days, it has been impossible to walk around without being accosted by some person with a clipboard asking if I am registered to vote, or if I've moved since the last election. Somebody is spending bucks to have all these people out there gathering registrations. Oregon doesn't have a gubernatorial election this year. It doesn't have a Senate election. The local left-wing Congressman could be declared legally brain-dead and still get 75% of the vote. The only significant person on the ballot in Oregon is Obama. Obama is also running lots of TV ads in Oregon. Obama won Oregon by sixteen points last time. I wonder why the Obama campaign feels the need to expend resources here? What are they worried about?

Really? Interesting. I've always thought of him as being someone who is not really anything and so only does things to manipulate his image to get what he wants.

Like, did he belong to Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years b/c he truly fervently believed in the "religion" Wright preaches or because he had to to gain credibility with the black community he wanted to vote for him?

Posted by: elizabethe loves a brownie at October 16, 2012 12:01 AM

I was referring specifically to his younger days. But, he has always been something, besides a hedonist. A narcissist. That's like a full time job, for Barry. He would certainly become more flexible and restrained in later years, for obvious reasons. But, Barry doesn't do things because he thinks it will make him cool. He might do, though, if he thinks it will make him COOLER. Barry does something because he's cool. Wright's church? Yeah, he'll do that, since he's coooool. It may not sound like a big difference, but it is.

460 From the "circle dances" link, if you click through twice to the original article by the sportswriter explaining his vote: Lisa considers me a traitor to the very essence of America, providing a helping hand to those in genuine need. There is a part of me that feels like a traitor myself, having seen firsthand on a sustained basis the cesspool of crime and crack and teenage prostitution and sinking-house dilapidation in which 25 percent of my hometown, the city of Philadelphia, lives, in poverty. Leaving aside the absurd notion that the essence of America is a"helping hand", this paragraph perfectly encapsulates what it is about Libs that makes me want to scream. He's concerned about the plight of inner city Philly. Philly is, and has been for the last few generations, dominated and run by the Dems. So are all the other rust belt cities. Libs are the REASON those cities are shitholes. YOU'RE THE FUCKING PROBLEM,ASSHOLE! IF YOU HAD ANY REAL COMPASSION, YOU'D HAVE VOTED R LONG AGO! Jesus! Fucking idiot Libs. Cause a goddamn mess, and then resist trying something new because " hey, look, we have a real mess here. I better vote for the Donk, he'll fix it!" Head. Desk. CRASH!

506 483 Years ago ... many years ago ... got to see a shuttle night launch.

Being a newbie, I asked 'How do we know which is the shuttle?'

In my defense, there were lots of lights circling the area as you might imagine. We were in Boca Raton, not across the bay.

One of the other writers says, 'Honey, trust me!' - she could talk like that being from Texas, and all - 'after you see your first nigh launch, you'll never ask again!'

Holy MF! Moly, was she right!

Oh, you lucky, lucky....dog. I never got to do that, and now the era of shuttles is over. I've seen video, and it's amazing -- a spark on the horizon (they don't let you get that close) which turns into the wild Force of the world channeled by man into flinging a speck into the heavens. That so much raw power can be quietly assembled over days, then unleashed in such a way in seconds, is nothing short of amazing.

@486  Speaking of addiction, nicotine is one of the most difficult drugs to withdraw from.  It's not as intense a withdrawal but  it   lasts much longer, the withdrawing phase, that is.  Lasts for weeks and sometimes months.  And the failure rate is very high.

Nicotine not only opens up the pleasure centers in the brain but can act as both a sedative and a stimulant,  a very pleasant "alert relaxation."  Also suppresses the appetite.  One of the reasons it's so difficult to kick is that despite all its negatives it does have psychological and  pharmacological  benefits.  Another  reason  it's so addictive  is  that one can keep on dosing without  the  harmful intoxicating and thus  limiting  effects  common to other drugs.

518 Our spelling sucks but nothing is perfect. English is so superior in every other way that quirky spelling is a small price to pay. Posted by: Tuna at October 16, 2012 12:42 AM (M/TDA) English spelling is the way it has to be because we have taken in so many words from other languages. Of course, we have been a bit too nice in allowing the retarded of some other languages to be adopted into the English (which really wasn't necessary) but that is just a marginal difference, anyway. Weird English trivia (actually, Latin alphabet trivia): We only have vowels because the Greeks originally took the Hebrew alphabet and screwed it all up. They mistook guttural consonants for vowels (as Hebrew had no vowels, since all words were of specific patterns). This was lucky for the West as the existence of independent vowels in the written alphabet gave it a flexibility that was necessary for the expansion of the language and importation fo foreign words.

If you quit cold turkey, nicotine withdrawal peaks at 72 hours and lasts about five days. I've quit and restarted nicotine so many times it isn't funny. The key to success is to clear your schedule and not expect to get much done for the next 5 days.

Our spelling sucks but nothing is perfect.

Our spelling sucks because Dr. Johnson was, at least on this score, an asshole. He's responsible for selecting funky, non-phonetic spellings for English words, where various letter combinations often have more than one pronounciation (e.g., "lead;" is that the antonym of "follow," or a metal used in bullets?).

Envy the Krauts in this respect, where all words are spelled phonetically. I don't think they bother with spelling tests and such; what would be the point?

545 Like I said up thread one semester of study does not do our language justice. It is endlessly fascinating. Posted by: Tuna at October 16, 2012 12:55 AM (M/TDA) Yep. But it makes learning other languages very difficult because there are many things we can easily say in English that can't be translated in any simple way - and a lot of them are very basic forms of speech, such as the progressive verb form (in Hebrew I used to do a literal translation that would drive Israelis crazy ), not to mention half of our tense structures. We seem to have more future forms than many other languages have present forms (those I've heard of and spoken with native speakers about, at least). But, the biggest thing is that we just have words, not nouns or verbs, really. Very, very flexible, but it's made it difficult for me to pick up other languages since I always like to say exactly what I want to say.

Yep, past associations and limited-hangout statements about them is something any other politician would have to answer to.

But when we have an assassinated ambassador, 2 Navy SEALS and a state worker whose murder on the 11th anniversery of September 11th at the hands of al-Qaeda affiliates was obscured in a likely political cover-up spanning 2 weeks, the President, Secretary of State and Ambassador to the UN, which is barely being investigated and pushed by the media -- such stories about Obama's past just sort of fade away...

I'm assuming you're talking about english? I tried a few years of latin and ancient egyptian, and it drove me fucking crazy. Three words in latin would do what 10 words in english would do because the rules were so different. There were all these rules and tenses and word endings that totally changed the meanings. Genitive this, and nominative that and accusative this and holy shit.....

I just couldn't get my head around it. Although it probably would have helped if I knew the rules of english to start with. lol

Very odd, the whole experience. Even in my second month of quitting I was having dreams every night where I was smoking. I never smoked in my dreams when I was smoking in real life, only when I quit. The experience of withdrawal and quitting was a real "brain" experience or "mind" experience, in how one's mind operates. Quite surreal.

It was Robert Downey Jr in Back to School who was doing the "dead language motif" for his studies, wasn't it? My understanding is that modern French doesn't even have the present progressive. They say "in the process of" or some such shit - which is what I used to say in Hebrew (without even knowing about the French thing). So, if I wanted to say, "I was walking to the store," I would say, "I was in the process of a walk to the store," and the Israelis would say, "WTFF??" Then we'd get into an argument of whether a "walk" was a process or not. I just spoke English most of my time there to save everyone the hassle.

Dumbing down your native communication capability for a particular audience is easy, smartening it up is impossible.

Carter appears to be of the bizarre idea that those movies where one football team steals another team's playbook and thereby has a game winning advantage. In real life there are no plays so secret and dazzling as to be game deciders. The better team wins, especially if the better team is MUCH better.

So it goes for debates. You either have credible ideas and the ability to present them convincingly or you don't. No amount of information given to your opponent in advance can change that. Especially the ideas in question are your actual principles and you actually believe in them. Sincerity matters, unless you're a leftist.

I've been there. Here's what happens: you have fond memories of lighting up and it feeling good. So you decide to light up, just once, but it doesn't feel good. Then you think, WTF, it didn't work, let me try again. The second time it feels a little good, but not much. So you try again. The third time's the charm.

The good feeling comes from the relief of withdrawal symptoms. The first time there are no withdrawal symptoms so it feels like crap. The second time there are withdrawal symptoms from the first time so it feels a little good. By the third time you're an addict again.

615 WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department on Monday night sought dismissal of a lawsuit by a Republican-led House committee demanding that Attorney General Eric Holder produce records about the botched law enforcement probe of gun-trafficking called Operation Fast and Furious.

In its court papers, the Justice Department says the Constitution does not permit the courts to resolve the political dispute between the executive branch and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that is seeking the records. The political branches have a long history of resolving disputes over congressional requests without judicial intervention, the court filing said.

Doesn't this sort of ignore ...
United States v. Nixon, 418 U.S. 683 (1974), was a landmark United States Supreme Court decision. It was a unanimous 8-0 ruling falling against President Richard Nixon and was important to the late stages of the Watergate scandal. It is considered a crucial precedent limiting the power of any U.S. president.

Unfortunately, the 2nd clarinet has a lot of rests.

We have never faced a situation like this where a completely lawless criminal executive uses its own enforcement arms to subvert the law to the extent that's going on now.  Not even Watergate was this bad.

The framers never anticipated this level of lawlessness and malevolence would ever exist in the executive.

@PurpAv "I've got some old school primers printed in the 1800's. Flipping through those makes one lament the state of public education today. We have fallen far, very far."

A few years ago, I read an outstanding series of books called, "The Wilderness Empire" (or something to that effect).  The series takes place in North America (1600s-1800) and is a mix of facts (events) and assumed dialogue between the actual historical figures.  However, there are countless actual letters written during the period included in the books.  Even the prose written by "commoners" and so-called "uneducated" farmers and foot soldiers would humble a modern day English professor.

The expected time of it's passage came and went, so I waited a bit more and headed back inside only to find out that it had broken up over Texas.

705 I've  got  a  story  that  is   so  explosive  about  Obama  that  I'm  going  to release  it  at  4:00  AM.  Cause  otherwise  it  might  blow  up  the  universe,  or  something.

707 711 Merovign, I'm at the WampServer page, and it's telling me I need C++ True? Posted by: Truman North at October 16, 2012 02:44 AM (I2LwF) I would assume they know what their software requires. That's the VC++ redistributable, BTW. If you have any remotely modern Steam games, you've probably installed it 50 times. Doesn't hurt *much* to do it again.

708 Truman, do you have a working IIS web server on your machine? This is the start. If not, you can see if you can get it or you can download the apache server. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/platform/windows.html

709 Truman, if all this is alien to you, you may be going down the wrong path. This is for hosting the site on the internet from your computer. If you have a host you want the stuff set up there anyway, and they already have the support stuff. You just need to use WP's web interface or software that can upload your posts to the site.

Going to wait for Mrs. North to do the heavy lifting.  If I install something stupid and break the computer, she'll be sore at me.

And you can tell by how my level of prose has descended, I'm feeling dumb at the moment.

OK.  I just want to set up my blog.  And I don't want it to be Blogger.

I will get a domain name, get it hosted, and then figure out what I want it to look like.

Actually, I already know what I want it to look like.  And I can do XTML well enough to put that part of it together.

I was just hoping there was a way I could do it here on the home computer, and not put it online, so I could make sure it looks really good before I did go live.

No worries.  I'll live.

716 France is going to ban homework as part of education "reforms"...

...its all about "fairness".  Some kids parents help, some don't, so the bar must be lowered.

I'm guessing the fairness ploy plays well with progressives here in the US.  We've been lowing the bar so much, we've had to dig a trench for it.

The Atari 1020 Plotter! I had one of those! Dire, dire, mistake of a purchase that was. Painfully slow and expensive as a printer and understanding how to program for it was a bit ahead of my curve then.

719 Posted by: @PurpAv at October 16, 2012 03:06 AM (D/sHG) I could feel the rabid insanity oozing out of that article as I read it. Unbelievable. And the shithead has the chutzpah to say "education is priority". LOL. I guess he meant, "banning education is a priority". And his idiocy about "Work should be done at school, rather than at home," is just plain offensive in its stupidity. But ... France voted for these turds (just as America voted for the Indonesian Imbecile). The suicidal rage of the West marches on, faithfully.

721 Truman, once you have the hosting set up, if you're on a recent version of Windows you may want to take a look at Microsoft Live Writer. It's free and is essentially a mini word processor for blogging. Once you have it set up it makes a lot of stuff very easy. It knows Wordpress.

723 I don't know about you guys but I've been burned out for a while on this. I'm in Central Ohio and from where I am, Romney's got this. I get no sense at all that Obama has any sort of traction here. As such, I'm soothing my soul by strumming some Zac Brown Band "Knee Deep." Yes, I can't sleep.

725 So apparently the new PPP/Kos poll is bad news for Obama. Of course, a "bad" PPP poll will still be more favourable to O than any other poll out there But a debate is now going on at Kos about whether to suppress the poll! Lots of little lefty darlings demanding the poll be shelved to avoid hurting the Annointed One. hilarious.

Yep LiveWriter is the shizzle for doing blog posts and best of all it's totally free. I've been trying to get the ace and cobs to use it since it eliminates about 85% of all the usual html goofs and makes embedding pics and video super-easy but...well Endor has never been known for its cutting edge technology.

Gee PIAPS, tell me something I don't know. Like why you are sending Chevy Volts to already safe and fully guarded embassies, and having NO security in unsafe embassies. A billion dollars in excess funds, so it wasn't lack of funding. We know its your fault. Always knew it was your fault. The job description makes it your fault. Thats a kindergarten piece of information.

But the buck doesn't stop at you no matter how much you need to to, the day before the debate. It stops at empty chair in the security briefings.

Saying "my bad" doesn't cut it. And what are you doing saying it in Peru? Get your fat ass back here and clean get your shit out of the State Dept.

735 was at a protest that was FOR the draft

Democrats have been agitating for a draft for years because of "fairness" or something...

So what's the problem?

Posted by: @PurpAv at October 16, 2012 02:48 AM (fJcck)

736 Yeah, I remember seeing all those protests FOR the draft in the 60's.

Posted by: Up, up with people at October 16, 2012 02:52 AM (kzFo5)

737 I just heard this on current TV, looking for their latest line of attack. Personally I prefer a volunteer force and not a draft. It just struck me as absurd. Romney is not that much older than I am and I do not recall any protests "for" the draft. If such protests occurred, it had to be 45 years ago. IIRC, didn't Al Sharpton and Charlie Rangel say the draft should be re-instituted at the beginning of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars? I just get the feeling they are going to say anything, do anything. They sound desperate and enraged.
