Overnight Open Thread (10-16-2012)
— Maetenloch

Well since all the decent folk are off at the debate thread, feel free to 'get comfortable'.

NO PANTS, NO SHIRT, FULL ONT SERVICE.

Remembering Joe Kittinger: C-O-M-E A-N-D G-E-T M-E

Felix Baumgartner made the news earlier this week with his jump earlier but don't forget that he was trying to outdo what Captain Kittinger did over 50 years ago.

In 1960 Kittinger jumped from 102,800 feet and set the highest balloon ascent, highest parachute jump, longest drogue-fall (four minutes), and fastest speed by a human being through the atmosphere. Later he served three tours in Vietnam and spent a year as a North Vietnamese POW when he was shot down in 1972. And this week at age 84 he served as the capsule commander during Baumgartner's jump.

220px-Kittinger-jump

But he wasn't the only jumper in that period - there were others who weren't as lucky:

Finally, there was the tragic case of Nick Piantanida, a truck driver, erstwhile exotic pet dealer and daredevil from New Jersey who six years after Kittinger's final statospheric jump decided that he was the man to beat the jump record. After two failed attempts, the second of which reached an unofficial altitude of 123,000 feet, Piantanida ascended over the South Dakota prairie in his Strato-Jump III gondola. Things were going well until about 57,000 feet when the ground crew heard a whoosh and a scream of "Emergency!" from Piantanida.

Though he was immediately rushed to a hospital, Pinatanida had spent too long exposed to a near-vaccuum and, after four months in a coma, he died at the Veteran's Hospital in Philadelphia.

Joe Biden Was There

And yet he still lied about tax rate reductions while removing deductions for the wealthy:

Amazing, in fact, might be a better description of Biden's duplicitousness on the question of tax reform. While obviously no one has enacted a plan exactly like Romney's before, the general principles have been applied twice, with John F. Kennedy's proposed tax reforms that were later implemented slightly differently, and Ronald Reagan's 1986 tax reform, both of which cut marginal rates significantly and eliminated deductions for the wealthy, while gathering essentially the same revenue (technically the '86 bill itself cost $8.9 billion in revenue over the first two years, but overall tax revenues increased substantially in its wake). But twice Biden claims that such tax reform "has never been done before." But he should know better - he actually voted to do it, 28 years ago. On September 27, 1986, Biden voted (along with 32 other Democrats) to enact H.R. 3838, Ronald Reagan's tax reform, which lowered rates, eliminated deductions, and barely affected the deficit.

In fact, that bill actually lowered the top marginal tax rate to 28 percent, the top rate Romney and Ryan have proposed. Biden's assertion that something like what Romney and Ryan are proposing "has never been done before" is, well, laughable.

And in fact Biden has been pretty much brazenly fibbing his way through life since at least law school - including this mega-whopper from his 1988 campaign:

"I think I probably have a much higher IQ than you do, I suspect," Biden sniped at the voter. "I went to law school on a full academic scholarship." That claim was false, as was another claim, made in the same rant, that he graduated in the top half of his law-school class. Biden wrongly stated, too, that he had earned three undergraduate degrees, when in fact he had earned one-a double major in history and political science. Another round of press inquiries followed, and Biden finally withdrew from the race on Sept. 23.

Always Room for Improvement: Socks That Never Wear Out

They made of lycra, carbon fiber and kevlar and they 're the brainchild of a recent graduate of the US Air Force Academy who used Kickstarter to get funding for the product.

Made from Kevlar-carbon matrix material, they're designed never to get a hole, droop, or wear out.

Described as "the first business-casual application of Kevlar," Socrates socks feature toes fashioned from a Kevlar carbon matrix material and a carbon threaded material on the toes and heel. That's the most common locations for holes covered, but the Socrates socks don't stop at Kevlar for their military-inspired longevity. The top of the socks also feature "military spec elastic," which presumably keeps them up in even battlefield conditions, while the bulk of the sock is created from Lycra freshFX fabric with "anti-droop technology."

Six TV Networks That Started Out as Something Else

Well I remember when the History Channel used to have actual history shows. And then you have the case of ABC Family which started out as the Family Channel:

Plan A was to use it for ABC re-runs. Too bad [ABC] didn't own the syndication rights to the stuff they wanted to show.

Plan B was an image makeover. They'd rename it XYZ (as in the opposite of ABC) and sell it to a younger, edgier audience. Too bad nobody read the contract that said the word "family" had to stay in the name forever.

Why? For that, we rewind to its beginning as Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network Satellite Service in 1979. That religious beginning followed the network through multiple sales, each of which has been required to continue broadcasting Robertson's The 700 Club, hence the reason that show is now bookended by the disclaimer, "The following/preceding CBN telecast does not reflect the views of ABC Family"as well as the network's slogan of the last few years, "A New Kind of Family."

Fiasco at Date Lab

Apparently the Washington Post runs a blind-date service called Date Lab with complementary dinners - so long as the couple give an after-action report which appears in the weekend magazine. Basically a print version of Blind Date.

And the most recent Date Lab did not go so well:

Jack Gray is 64 and Eva-Marie Pede is 59. They both happen to be Republican-but other than age group and political affiliation, they didn't seem to have anything in common.

Jack tried making small-talk-he didn't know much about dressage, which happens to be Eva-Marie's passion. He later asked, "'Don't you ever just get on a horse and ride it just to ride it?' And she says, 'No, that wouldn't be right.' It sounded like she enjoyed being with a horse more than a human." (Was that a Catherine the Great reference?) Jack was also puzzled by his date's quietness.

"For me it was an uncomfortable situation," says Eva-Marie. "It was just very weird, very strange. There would not be anything positive, and so I'd really rather not say anything. It's awkward; I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. What my perception is is all it is: just my perception. Someone else might think something completely different."

At which point Eva-Marie decides to go the bathroom and . never return. "To avoid awkwardness and lengthy explanations, I decided to leave," she explains. "The interaction was becoming painful, and it was time to go. [There was] just absolutely no compatability, and I didn't want to stick it out for the duration. I made a quiet exit. I'd rather not say what in particular prompted me."

Comments have been flying with many critical of Pede. Baring an unsafe situation I would have expected a bit more grace at extricating oneself from a bad date at age 59.

9 I read a book about Piantanida (Magnificent Failure).  On his first attempt all went well until he stood up to jump--and discovered his on-board air hose connection was frozen solid to his suit.  He didn't have the tools to remove it without compromising the integrity of his pressure suit so he had to ride it back down.  (Actually, he parachuted out at low altitude and had to land in a garbage dump.)  Had he been able to get the coupling undone, he very probably would have been successful.
On his second try he somewhat inexplicable opened his faceplate briefly at about 60,000 feet and quickly passed out from hypoxia.  There is some debate as to why he'd do such a foolish thing, but the best guess is that he had been improperly trained.
Oddly enough, the Air Force paid for all his medical bills, as long as he was kept at one of their hospitals.  They'd never had the chance to study the effects of explosive decompression on a living subject.

The one upside for us is that the only thing the SCOAMT had left was likeability (for reasons utterly incomprehensible to me) and he managed to piss that all away (even with almost 4 extra minutes and a moderator and audience on his side). It takes a truly singular specimen of a miserable failure to pull that off.

86 Kittinger shot down the year I enlisted and spent a year as a POW, while I was going to concrerts in Honolulu and body surfing the north shore. That man is an American Hero. RE-the debate; I sure wish Mitt was as well versed on some issues as some of you are. I can think of a few around here who would have ripped barky a new one when Libya came up for instance. He had to know about the phone intercept I read about here and yet kept on blaming the video and talking about restricting our free speech rights. There was so much more but, one finger typing on the phone and all that.

With each passing day it is becoming clear that the Obama Regime didn't simply make a mistake when it attributed the terrorist attack on our Libyan Consulate to an obscure YouTube Video.

It's becoming clear that the Obama Regime, when it heard of the incident, actually scrambled, behind the scenes, to place politics above the security of our nation and invented and promoted a "suitable lie" to an unsuspecting and gullible public.

And to make matters worse, Barack Obama wasted no time and trotted in front of the United Nations to offer "apologies" to our enemies, based on a false narrative that his own people concocted out of thin air, and his "apologies" border on treason!

Obama's not DENYING... he's LYING.

One friend kept talking all sorts of garbage, really nasty stuff, and she knew I was a conservative. When I would call her on it she'd say, "well, you know the others, of course I don't mean you." But, after a while it really started to grate on me. It was hard to reconcile the rancid bloviating NBC talking points that emitted from her pie hole with anything positive.

She voted for Obama in 2008 because she thought that America needed a change. Not anymore, and people several rows forward, backward, and on the other side got to listen as to why. 303 @253 "biology" is not an "emergent property". that statement doesn't even make sense. no, biology is no different than anything else. everything is all physics at the fundamental level, and that's why physicists are the most importabt people on the planet and you should really hug the next one you see (but make sure you ask first, cuz it doesn't happen to most physicists too often, and anyway they scare easy). biology used to be like glorified librarianism. these days, it's more and more becoming targetted and specific chemistry and physics. since there isn't even a scientifically robust definition of "life", it's ridiculous to say that biology is somehow different because "biology is alive". x.x biological systems are perhaps the most complex chemical systems of which we have knowledge, no doubt, but they're still reducibly chemical, and of course all things chemical are reducibly quantum. debate: i felt like crowley did a pretty fair job as moderator, all things considered. i guess i go in expecting them to play hardball for the dem no matter what, so with expectations tempered, a slight lean left seems pretty fair to me! felt like romney could have done better than he did...too much responding to nitpicks that by ignoring he could have made his focus seem grander than obama's definite pettiness. obama looked foolish early in the debate, but he either tired a bit or realised he was being too combative and using horrible language for a supposedly polished speaker, so i'm afraid to say he didn't end it as poorly as he started. still, i thought it was a clear romney win overall. not that i'm biased >.>

But he's not working off of evidence or principles. He just wants to make as much money so he can buy as many whores before his swollen head explodes. I wouldn't trust him to tell me if the sun is out. In 2008 he was saying how all the polls were wrong about McCain and Palin right up to election day. I'm not saying he's wrong about Romney winning. I hope to God he's right. I just know Morris would say that regardless of reality. Obama could be up 10% and Dick would say we are secretly winning.

307 My feeling is they both should have dialed back on the Testosterone, but in a situation where they both come off a bit pissed off, I think that benefits Romney.

The only think that's holding Obama up is that people still believe he's a nice little Urkle, tonight he showed his true colors.

Obama is also going to have to "clarify" some of his outrageous lies.

398 @337 biological systems can be said to be "emergent" from the chemistry, which is in its turn "emergent" from the physics, and if you knew what "reducible" meant, you would understand that i was saying as much. nevertheless, to say that "biology is an emergent property" is something that nobody who has *ever* correctly used the term "emergent property" would do. not only are biological properties not largely "emergent properties" in the way that, say, gravity is an emergent phenomenon of entropy or superconductance is an emergent phenomenon of cooper pairing between electrons, but biology itself is...a science. "consciousness" and "psyche" are emergent properties. i'm sure there are many other biological phenomena that are emergent properties, too, but i can't think of any right now. nevertheless, most biological systems are understood well enough to know that they are nothing more than complex chemistry applied to things we call living organisms -- and even some things we don't, like viruses and prions. an "emergent property" has to make something *totally* different out of the rules it is emerging from. just because there is a higher-level application of a fundamental science does not make that application an "emergent property". we may have said fifty years ago that, say, phenotypes are totally emergent properties of this new thing called dna, but these days we can pretty much trace EXACTLY how some gene or combination of genes in that that dna governs the synthesis of some protein that, in a certain type of cell produces a certain chemical cascade that stimulates, say, the production of melanin, which absorbs more incident light in the visible bandwidth, thereby giving that hair cell a darker colour. that is, now we know that hair colour is not a totally novel emergent phenomenon of the dna code, but we can trace the exact chemical cascade from the exact loci on the dna that cause the colour of the hair to darken. increased complexity != emergence, sorry.

399 >>this upcoming Lincoln flick is worth seeing, or is it more Hollywood leftwing bullshit revisionism?

Well... there is the aggrandizement of Lincoln as concerned about "slaves" to the point where he would jeopardize the larger war effort to ensure "freedom."

In point of fact, the Civil War was simply not about slavery. It was an attempt by European and New York money power to finally dominate and remove once and for all the power of the Republican South. Slavery was a horrible institution but that was evidently and obviously not why Lincoln went to war.

In another departure from the history books, screenplay writer Tony Kushner offers a sympathetic depiction of Lincoln's wife as a strong and supportive woman. In the past Todd has often been remembered as much for possible mental instability as being loyal to her husband's political policies.

When successful artists reach a certain point in their career it seems they are increasingly called upon to provide certain projects "for the good of the country." Perhaps Spielberg has reached that point.

It is simply silly for Spielberg to try to claim this movie is not political. Is it aimed at advancing Obama's chances to win re-election? The "buzz" surrounding the movie surely doesn't hurt Obama's persona – as Obama has consciously modeled himself on the myth of Lincoln along with FDR.

I'd wait for the DVD

A great illustration of how words change meaning over time.  Whenever I hear the word "progressive", I instinctively snarl a little bit.  It's an amorphous term that is defined by what the user terms "progress".  Teddy Roosevelt and many other former republicans fell under the sway of top-down progressivism in the early 20th century.  I hope they lived long enough to see what Woodrow Wilson defined as progress a decade later, and then, seeing that, repented and lamented the error of their ways.  The fallibility of man and the law of unintended consequences are always and at all times in effect.

Posted by: Achmed bin lonely at October 17, 2012 12:10 AM (2CiZb)

Abl,

You ask important questions, and more details are needed.

When you were in that other country, were you engaged in Holy Jihad?  If so, your actions were entirely justifiable as a way to infiltrate the infidel world.  As they are Haram, you should be as well. Taqiyya dictates this, and Allah will see no shame in your actions.

If you were not engaged in Jihad, but still did the mouth-sex to the infidel, it is less clear.  Your reason for engaging in such haram activities, along with urinating towards Mecca could indeed be problematic.  This question cannot be answered without more detail.  Specifically, who was the infidel, what did he look like, what was he wearing, what were the details of your encounter (Allah commands you be very specific!), did you get a phone number or other method of locating the infidel for eventual Jihad, once you've gained the haram homosexual's full confidence?

I'm sure your full detailing of this incident will show that you have acted in the defense of Islam and our Prophet (PBUH).  Pictures or video proving your faith will only further your cause.  The higher resolution makes your eventual salvation easier to see.

Regards,

Irish Imam

481 The words "progressive" and "liberal" have unfortunately been associated with FAIL for so long now that their meanings have been largely erased or otherwise degraded.

Both words are worthy aspirations and I consider myself both of those things and have for a long time. It's just that I think progress emanates from a free people choosing their leaders on their merit, and liberal (to me) means that every person deserves to better themselves and their family also based on the merits, AND that they have property rights in which they get to keep for themselves the material goods that they have legally gained.

I am a Classical Liberal, I suppose, in the John Locke mold.

520 Does anyone have a screenshot or link to ObamaÂ’s sneer when Romney brought up Fast and Furious gun program? I thought it was the angriest look I have seen on a candidateÂ’s face during a debate. I agree with the consensus that the moderator was a horror show. She frequently let Obama get the last word in. It was Romney or Obama getting the question, one responds, and Obama gets the last word, happened on almost every question. Many of the questions were layups for Obama. On the Benghazi question, I donÂ’t see how the mainstream media can label this as a major missed opportunity by Romney, sure he could have attacked it stronger but he got in some major points on it and his time once again was cut short, you had Obama looking weak, begging Candy to stop the discussion and you can basically now cut an ad showing Obama lying about what he said on September 12. I also thought that in many of the mano a mano exchanges Romney came across stronger than Obama.

He might have been on it. But, he wasn't showing any overt symptoms. That could be due to a tolerance, though. Bright lights will pin your eyes. I didn't notice them. Check his eyes against Romney to be sure.
