The Cuban Missile Crisis - 50 Years Later
Here Steven Hayward of Powerline reviews the episode and declares it a defeat of the US rather than the triumph it was made out to be:
To be sure, as Churchill once put it, "talk-talk is better than war-war," but the conventional "lesson" of the Cuban Missile Crisis could not be more incorrect. The view that that U.S. "won" the Cuban Missile Crisis has more lives than a cat. In fact, the Cuban episode was an American defeat, and it contributed powerfully to the thinking that led to the Vietnam quagmire.
...In fact Khrushchev had calculated correctly that he could bluff the U.S. into giving a non-intervention guarantee for Cuba and a trade of Soviet missiles in Cuba for NATO missiles in Turkey. Kennedy and his grandmasters thought they had "won" because they had avoided war, even though the Soviets were never prepared to engage in warfare at the time. The Crisis ended with Cuba being secured not only as an intact political asset to the Soviet Union, but also potentially as a military asset for the future. Some "victory."
I'm not sure I would go quite as far as Hayward since in the end the Russians were forced to back down militarily (at some strategic cost to us) and nuclear war was avoided - but it did teach the Kennedy administration all the wrong lessons which they then went on to apply all throughout the rest of the decade.
But the best and brightest of the Kennedy-Johnson administration were so self-deluded with their “success” that they decided to apply the same strategy of “flexible response” in Vietnam. Cyrus Vance, who was a deputy secretary of defense at the Pentagon in 1962 and who later served as Jimmy Carter’s Secretary of State, confirmed this view: “We had seen the gradual application of force applied in the Cuban Missile Crisis and had seen a very successful result. We believed that, if this same gradual and restrained application of force were applied in South Vietnam, that one could expect the same result.”
And if you want to know when the world truly came the closest to a full-scale nuclear war, check out Able Archer in 1983.
Able Archer 83 was a ten-day NATO command post exercise starting on November 2, 1983 that spanned Western Europe, centered on the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Headquarters situated at Casteau, north of the Belgian city of Mons. Able Archer exercises simulated a period of conflict escalation, culminating in a coordinated nuclear release. The 1983 exercise incorporated a new, unique format of coded communication, radio silences, participation by heads of government, and a simulated DEFCON 1 nuclear alert.
The realistic nature of the 1983 exercise, coupled with deteriorating relations between the United States and the Soviet Union and the anticipated arrival of strategic Pershing II nuclear missiles in Europe, led some members of the Soviet Politburo and Soviet military to believe that Able Archer 83 was a ruse of war, obscuring preparations for a genuine nuclear first strike.
In response, the Soviets readied their nuclear forces and placed air units in East Germany and Poland on alert.
The Soviet top leadership had never been to America and only knew Reagan as the war-mongering caricature that the US media portrayed. A missile early warning false alarm and the KAL 007 incident in September only increased Soviet paranoia and by November Andropov and the Politburo were absolutely convinced that the US was planning a first strike and Able Archer would be the cover for it.
It was only later that Reagan found out how close the USSR had come to war over the exercises and he later wrote this:
"Three years had taught me something surprising about the Russians: Many people at the top of the Soviet hierarchy were genuinely afraid of America and Americans. Perhaps this shouldn't have surprised me, but it did ... During my first years in Washington, I think many of us in the administration took it for granted that the Russians, like ourselves, considered it unthinkable that the United States would launch a first strike against them. But the more experience I had with Soviet leaders and other heads of state who knew them, the more I began to realize that many Soviet officials feared us not only as adversaries but as potential aggressors who might hurl nuclear weapons at them in a first strike
... Well, if that was the case, I was even more anxious to get a top Soviet leader in a room alone and try to convince him we had no designs on the Soviet Union and Russians had nothing to fear from us."
Poster seen in the halls of the EU European Commission. The ideology behind the hammer and sickle impoverished and outright killed more people in the 20th century than Nazism did - yet the swastika is banned in most European countries while the symbol of communism is celebrated in the halls of the EU.
Then you could be a rancher/homesteader in Manitoba, Canada:
Got an extra ten bucks? If so, you, too, could be the owner of a sparkling new home in Reston, Manitoba, a rural prairie town in Southern Manitoba bordering Saskatchewan on the west and North Dakota on the south. In an effort to jump on the oil boom in that part of the country, officials are once again selling undeveloped land for a mere $10, an initiative they first started in 2010.
Back then they had 14 lots for sale, 11 of which have houses built on them today, economic development officer Tanis Chalmers told ABC News
Why Atheists Can't Have Nice Things
Because they insist on doing dickish things like this:
Richard Dawkins and Sean Faircloth are recruiting college students to photograph the homes of ministers as the two well-known atheist work to make a documentary they say they hope leads to the abolishment of tax exemptions for religious leaders in America.
Faircloth, author of "Attack of the Theocrats: How the Religious Right Harms Us All & What We Can Do About It," encouraged hundreds of University of Colorado - Boulder students who attended his talk last week to photograph the homes of ministers and send them to him.
When he sees injustice on the Phoenix light rail, he acts:
A vigilante drew what appears to be a samurai sword to break up a brawl on a Phoenix light rail car. The martial arts weapon, long-associated with feudal Japan, does not appear often on American public transportation. The man, wearing a baseball cap and headphones, did not need to execute a single martial arts move to scare away the fighters. He simply unsheathed the katana and inched slowly toward them.
"Let me see it! Let me see it!" said the man who had been losing the fight, but the wannabe samurai held up his fist to signal that he was in control of the situation.
The two young men who had the upper hand during the fight fled from the car, as the man who was punched and kicked repeated cursed at them from the doorway.
I'm thinking you could create a whole modern day Kung Fu-like TV series based on this incident alone.

Sure there's a chance they'll break your heart, empty your bank account, and betray your country - but it's only like 74% - maybe 80% tops - and that's better than most of what you get in Vegas.

Romney has been playing with a straight bat. Has had a few singles, but he doesn't seem inclined to go for much in the way of big shots. Concentrating on not getting out. Can't say who's going to come out on top. The Indonesian Imbecile is appealing on anything that goes near Romney's pads.

I think it was a draw on points but Romney seemed to get ahead at the end.
But overall, I think Obama's pissy demeanor sunk him badly here. What a flaming asshole.
I think people jhust assume Obama is a nice guy because of the media's firewall of him, but tonight lots of viewers got to see him as the flaming fuckhole that he truly is.

Most Christians, I find, define "militant atheists" as "atheists who stand up for what they don't believe".
Do you, likewise, call evangelical Christians "militant" and "disgusting"?

Speaking of phrases I want to punch someone for saying, the next mom that says to me "I can't take on one more thing this year I am doing so much already at school" I'ma gonna resort to violence. Because it is usually accompanied by them telling me that I should be the one to take on whatever task is at hand. Because apparently if you've got a crappy job that has no glory assigned to it to do, then PGIS is your girl.

You don't have to spend your whole childhood reading fantasy and science fiction to realize that there is no mode of warfare, no matter how outmoded, that the United States can afford to ignore. It helps, though. If there were fire-breathing flying dragons, I'd be all for a fire-breathing flying dragon corps. What, have you heard something?
After WWI, we abandoned signals intel. After WWII, there were no snipers. And everybody knows about fighter planes with no guns.
I was ashamed for my country, and talked about it a lot, when the first US forces into Afghanistan had to borrow saddles because all of ours had been sold off as surplus. As it turned out, the first in were USAF special forces, and I found the idea of Air Force cavalry alluring and comforting. Every few years, Navy wants its airships back, and it's all I can do to say no. My god, they were beautiful things.
Right now, and about three moves ahead of Pres. Seven-Dimensional-Chess there, we have to keep ass in gear to make sure the carrier group does not become the Pacific battleship fleet of the 21st century. But it can be done, and it must.
While we're at it, the battleship has its applications, just saying. Given my head like a runaway warhorse, I could blow a trillion the first year and not a penny would be wasted. And I might just start with horses and bayonets.

I really need to save the longbow explanation as a text file. Very very short version. There were some problems with people going over the line with racial humor and ace did a Very Special Post about it. It was all earnest and serious and then in the comments a discussion about how the use of longbows altered the balance of power when they were first introduced. It started as an interesting and serious discussion about longbows v. crossbows with ancillary forays into related military history. Well, ace kept lecturing us to stop talking about the damn longbows because the post was super cereal guys. The more he told us to stop, the more we kept it up. Thus, longbows.
Now the pancake thing ace started himself when he discussed luring a girl back to a lair with the hey I'll make us pancakes line. Thus pancakes is now a Moron euphemism for gettin' some.

It was a tactical win for Obama, but probably a strategic win for Mitt. Also, a lot of the stories coming out now are poking holes in what Obama said more than what Romney said.
We wanted Romney to finish him off and didn't get that. But Romney was going low risk.
Also, let's face it: real foreign policy--i.e. alliances and defense, not trade--Romney will have to rely on advisors for. It's not what he's confident in his own knowledge about.

I think of it as cultural genetics.
Due to being conquered by the Khans and being shut off from Protestant Christianity they didn't develop the intellectual framework to build a free society.
That being said, they were slowly getting there when the communists took over and set them back hundreds of years.

The hilarious thing will be watching the liberal's heads implode when they try to fathom how another Obama debate "win" actually strengthened Romney's momentum in the final two weeks. How? HOW? He won the debate!1111
Because pandering to your dwindling base instead of undecided voters/independents is what wins elections, doncha know?

that being said, it's pretty illogical to call atheists who desire to promote their own (lack of) religious dogma any more militant than the religious folks, be they jewish, islamic, or xtian, who are busy using public roads and property to promote their own often differing interpretations of thousand-year-old scriptures.
I'd rather spend a week with an evangelical family, than a day with a militant atheist.

I think this is a false premise, that athesits don't believe in anything outside themselves, or are inconsistent if they do. The lack of a belief in God does not mean they do not believe in a greater humanity. It is at least possible to act morally as an atheist--whether they have moral equivalence with someone who acts morally due to belief in God is a fascinating philosophical question but is irrelevent in terms of the actual behaviors. Ace said something about this a week or two back, when people were saying Mitt did nice things only to look good instead out of an innate goodness, too lazy to hunt for the post.
tl;dr: I reject the idea that meaning is external only, and a "true" athesit must be a nihilist by extension.

Non-religious people love their children and worry about them. They love their country and worry about it. We are human just like you. Your equals.
***
You care because you were raised in a Christian country with a Christian ethos that you absorbed whether or not your parents endeavored to raise you in such a manner.
Take that away and you'd have the sort of "morality" that has traditionally existed in non-theistic societies - which if I were to detail would Godwin the thread.
Interestingly, irrespective of its truth, religion has a use for societies - it is what allows them to establish something above hunter gatherers. Militant atheism is arguably a great threat to human well being then liberalism is, preciously because the latter can be tamed by religion.

There are indirect and deferred pleasures.
If you do care about anything extending beyond yourself then I think you would find that you actually believe in something else and something beyond the physical
Why? The physical is mysterious enough and much bigger than I am.
Either life and existence have meaning or not.
That's the big question. Unlike you I do not presume to know the answer.

Quite the reverse. If death is the end, then nothing matters other then potentially epicurean pursuits of pleasure. The left hasn't embraced this out of intellectual development, but by simply taking their views on religion and morality to their obvious conclusions.
If one instead lives on in some form, then what you do here and now will matter forever.
Let's take a simple analogy.
You log into a forum for a couple of days knowing that it is set to be closed and its servers wiped. Do you seek to improve the forum? Or do you just take your enjoyment of it, in whatever format that takes, while the forum still lives?
Let's instead suppose you join another forum expecting to be a regular participant for many years. Do you troll? Do you attack other posters unfairly?

Wrong question. The question is, "How could a closed, bounded, finite world hold any meaning?"
It can't.
Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at October 23, 2012 12:58 AM (X3lox)
my take? an atheistic life says its all pointless, life has no meaning beyond do what feels good for as long as you can get away with it. Suffering has no meaning. There is no greater destiny, no reason to be good when we are not watched, when itdoesnt bring immediate gain beyond the satisfaction of knowing youre "more moral" (vain pride.) It creates a world without magic, without grace, shredded of wonder and leave one vulnerable to despair in ones lowest moments, believing it is all for nothing.
also when you parents die, when your child dies, hell even your pets die there is some comfort in knowing the spark that made them live and special is forever and has gone to dwell in a better place, awaiting you, when you will in time join them, and experience their love and specialness again, in a place without sorrow. Such a belief makes sacrifice possible, and great acts of courage and valour that an atheistic belief in nothing really doesnt encourage.
I mean, if this is all you got why risk throwing it all away being brave, or sacrificing all for some stranger. People only do that if theres some high purpose or spiritual life to look forward to, regardless.
(translation: most believing people would rather risk their life than their soul.) whether or not you think thats dumb is up to you. I think its rather beautiful and compelling.

As for my being capable of love and concern because I was lucky enough to be raised by Christians, well, you have much to learn, Young Jedi.

You miss both my points utterly.
The necessity of religion for a functioning society of any complexity is only the most minor of proofs that it is true. The point is that attacking the social system that allows for our society to exist is the height of foolishness unless you specifically which to force society to regress to its pre-Christian state.
It is rather like dumping the engine from your car because you don't like the level of noise it makes when you drive.
And whether you were raised by Christians or hippy-dippy pot heads, you were raised in a Christian society whose morality is based on Christian morality. And for that you should be thankful.

its a treatise on how there are vestiges of religious like belief in even the most secular atheist because humans really need something to believe in. It traces how our beliefs evilved from the very primitive aboriginal type, through the evolution of man's societies and how beliefs changed with the terrain and the complexity of the society's needs.
Its facinating.

PoP, your starting axiom is that "meaning" (which I am not certain you've actually defined, so we might all be arguing apples and oranges) must come from outside the system--which is itself necessarily a logical fallacy, as logic is a system that is defined and provable only by logic itself, and necessarily so. God may be sufficient to give life/humanity meaning, but not necessary.
Incidentally, I've written a couple major papers on Paul of Tarsus and did a senior independent study on Kantian ethics, not to mention subscribe to those views personally, so I think I'm qualified to call your premise malarkey. It's all well and good to say Faith is your basis for finding meaning--but it does not automatically invalidate or even contradict the use of pure rational logic to assign meaning as well.

if you truly believe there is nothing that comes after, that upon death there is no point and only total dissolution... its possible a person could feel everything in their life was extra important TO THEM, because its all they will ever get all they will experience, and every death would seem an extra especially tragic tragedy. Because thats it: theres no more lives and no heaven either. This --could-- cause one to be extra moral, believing that the would not want to waist a single precious second of life, since its ALL THEY HAVE GOT.

Most consistent atheists will be naturalists, that is, they will argue that everything consists exclusively what we can measure and sense, test scientifically. Yet logic, the atheist's favorite fallback, defies that category. So does the philosophy behind naturalism (they use non-naturalistic categories and technique to attempt to prove it).

wow. as a person who is not christian i can see what you mean but think you are missing the point of what they are supposed to believe, too. People do not spend their lives trying to curry gods favour if they are christian. Jesus had really stern things about "loving the law without loving each other" (living to curry the favour of the divine and forgetting whats really important.) Even the jewish midrash are really down on that concept. I am not sure if you know this, but most jews dont really believe in afterlife like christians do either. What you have here is all you got. DONT WASTE IT.
but dont be an asshole. then you get the stick. thats utilitarianism, but also a relationship with something bigger gives all that suffering in life a point and like i said gives one a reason to be bigger than oneself when the occasion calls for it.
when i speak of belief is do not confine myself to one system or regional diety. I mean just knowing theres something more out there for human spirit. Which is kind of universal among the different compassion based faiths.
but even Animistic beliefs have a way of putting perspective on loss. I like to say one trives protective shaman is the next tribe's evil wizard. If there is a flood and one tribe loses most of its stock and the other doesnt, its not that they had better barns and planning, its that the evil wizard put a spell on them and they lost their cows so that the rival tribe would not lose any! or in other words: Democrats have always been with us.
this is why their arguments are so powerful. They are old as nomads, just cloaked in new words.

It will be more dry, but probably not dry in an absolute sense. The sugar and cornstarch could harden and seal moisture into the roast, but only if applied at the beginning of cooking.....2-1/2 hours into a 3 hour roast is probably too late. It's also a fairly low roasting temp, so I'm thinking it will have already done what it was going to long before.
That said, when you take it out of the oven, be sure to let the meat "rest" for 10 minutes before you carve or put it away -- easiest way is to make a "pup tent" of tinfoil and put it over the roast wherever you stash it. This period will allow the juices to redistribute themselves around while things cool a bit.

Whether its choice or not is really irrelevant, what matters is what is true or not. Making a personal choice is what we do every day, all day long. Why we make the choices and what they represent is the main thing.
Its like faith: faith that your car will start when you turn the key or that your wife isn't cheating on you while you're at work is the same exercise and experience as faith in a theistic creator. The difference is in the object of your faith.
What matters is whether or not you believe in what is true, not that you believe or not.
As it turns out, Christianity teaches you don't actually have a choice in the matter, that you're saved by the gracious act of God, bringing you to spiritual life from death. So its out of your hands/

Bad idea.
You can keep stuff for extended periods above about 140 degrees or below about 40 degrees (there are real numbers for this, but I'm too lazy to look them up), but between there is "bacteria reproduction optimal". Cool stuff on your cooktop until it hits the top of the range, then get it into the fridge where it will be below the bottom -- but DO NOT leave it within the range overnight.

There's another category: gratitude. Christians respond to the immense love and salvation that was given them freely by God in gratitude and love. Its like this.
What if someone found your wallet and gave it back to you, how grateful would you be?
Now say, the wallet had all the cash and credit cards in it, intact. How grateful now?
What if the guy who bent down to pick up your wallet pushed you out of the way of a car as he did so. How grateful are you now?
What if he did so and died in your place, saving your life?
Think to the last scene of Saving Private Ryan where the old Ryan is at the grave weeping, telling the men who died he's tried, tried so hard to live a life worthy of their sacrifice. That's a glimpse of what it is like.
Gratitude is the key, its why Christians, when they are behaving correctly, do what they do. They can't ever pay back such an immense and loving act of sacrifice. Ever.
We're lousy at it. We fail, we mess up, we forget, we act like we don't care, we keep getting it wrong. Christians are terrible witnesses of this love and sacrifice, we're shameful. But we keep trying and keep getting back up and each time God takes us in His arms and says "you were forgiven 2000 years ago, now go make me proud."

You assume wrong. The Standard Model is our best guess based on what we know. But we've only been observing a tiny corner of the universe for a very limited time, so it's pure folly to think that what we know is all there is. I have no doubt the Standard Model will be revised and revised again in the years to come. I consider the "Big Bang" to be just another creation myth.

You're going to radically increase temps and humidity in your fridge and possibly freezer. I don't have an immediate answer to that.
Maybe a quick cooldown before putting it in the fridge. Ice packs under the pan? Haven't tried it, usually eat food after I cook it.
Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at October 23, 2012 02:03 AM (bxiXv)
I was assuming that he was going to refrigerate it in some sort of closed container. As such, it shouldn't raise the overall temp of the fridge very much, and although it will linger in the danger zone a tad, it should cool through it in a reasonable time. After all, going from 135 degrees to 40 is going to take a finite amount of time no matter what you do. [As a side note, any time you can avoid exposure to bacteria/fungi/etc., it increases your safety factor. If you have store-bought plastic-wrapped cheese all the way up to room temperature and put it back in the fridge, it may still make it to the "sell-by" date.....but if you unwrap it, put it on a cheese plate, have 20 guests shuffle by stirring up dust while it warms to room temperature, and then put it back in the fridge, you'll be lucky if it makes it a week.]
If he put it into the fridge without a cover, it would (a) possibly heat other items, but (b) also dry the ever-loving-crap out of exposed peaks of it to the point that not even a glaze could salvage it.

My guess is the next big jump in understanding, if we get it, will be in gravity, which is still pretty much a puzzler for scientists.

Hmm, I suppose it depends on your definition of "universe".
If you define "universe" as "everything", then by definition the universe has to be infinite.
But if you define "universe" as "everything observable", then it may or may not be infinite.

I always thought it would make more sense to say that the speed of light, which defines our units of length, is slowing down. Imagine if all the rulers in the universe were shrinking. That would make your dick seem to expand, even if it were infinitely large.

So many things are calibrated to light, it's possible that those few that are not are slowing/shrinking themselves. Reminds me of a dealie about whether we could tell if we were in the process of falling into a black hole -- the only detectable distortion would be tidal effects.

Because our rulers are shrinking to match. The MKS system of units makes the speed of light constant by definition.

You call it "because it makes me feel good" but the actual response is out of gratitude, an outward directed reaction focused on the person to whom you feel grateful. That's not about how you feel at all, it is about what they did for you and the memory of it.
Over time that might become more self-directed and internal, but initially at least, its almost entirely selfless. Not about how you feel at all.

BTW, pasilla chili is teh sekrit ingrediament....get a little 69-cent pack and try it -- it is not hot, not really spicy as such, and fills in an earthy richness to just about anything. You can even put it in an omelet.

You can measure the speed of light using the old meter-bar-in-Paris standard and you will get a constant. But the universe isn't expanding fast enough to affect the meter bar in Paris.
It's only when measuring very large lengths with the modern "distance traveled by light in time t" standard that you see lengths getting longer. Then you have a choice: you can say that lengths really are getting longer or the speed of light is getting slower. The standard model says the former but IMO the latter is equally valid.

In Relativity Theory, light is the fundamental entity from which meters and seconds are defined. Everything is measured in terms of light because it is the only constant. Most of relativity Theory can be derived from the one assumption that the speed of light is constant in all inertial frames. A meter is always a meter in the same inertial frame. It's only from another frame that the meter is measured as being different from a meter.
Similarly, in Quantum Theory, much is derived from the constancy of the electron. Of course, in Quantum Theory, there's really no such thing as motion. Things are just observed at discrete times and don't really "travel" in between. They are at one one place and then they are at another place, but they haven't taken a path from one to the other (in the mathematics, they have taken every path from one place to the other). Quantum Theory also introduces the idea that there are no laws for the physical universe but only meta-laws which carry probabilities that give the appearance of physical laws when one carries out a large number of discrete observations.

That was my first thought but it seems to come from conservation of energy. If energy is conserved in an expanding universe model than energy must be gradually lost in a model where the distances between galaxies are fixed and things slow down for no reason. Thus, redshift. I'm too tired and emotional to work out the details but I remain convinced that an alternate model is possible.

"1088 Re: Atheism and Morality Discussions

Actually, it seems like I read an argument once whereby the commonly-held idea of God was shown to be logically inconsistent. I forget how it goes, but if you show such an inconsistency, you don't need "concrete evidence" to make such a declaration without some sort of act of "faith".
As to morality, one need not have an invisible nanny eternally hanging over one's shoulder, promising unspeakable endless torture for non-compliance, to recognize that there is such a thing as right and wrong. Right and wrong is simply the subject of ethics in the real world, with no supernatural characters required.

A French traffic analyst figured out that the Soviets had stupidly switched all of their civilian call signs with the military call signs and that the Soviets had not launched their bombers - but that it was a routine air resupply mission with the civilian fleet. The US bombers were recalled. The lead US bombers were over Soviet airspace when they were recalled. We were one failed vacuum tube in a bomber's radio away from WWIII.
