America Only Ranks 3rd in Liking America
Japan and Kenya actually like us better than we do. And the US just barely beats out France - France!?
Whatever happened to good ole fashioned American self-love?
But not to worry - the world still loves Obama. In fact he leads Romney by 65% to 8% in most of Europe. The only country where Romney is ahead is Pockistan - go figure.
And on a completely unrelated note how come Obama donors have so much trouble getting their zip codes right?
NYT: Mitt Romney Talks Too Old Fashioned
Mitt Romney at a campaign stop in Virginia this month. His unique style of speaking has distinguished him throughout his career. Not merely in love.
"Yeah, smitten," he said. "Mitt was smitten."
It was a classic Mittism, as friends and advisers call the verbal quirks of the Republican presidential candidate. In Romneyspeak, passengers do not get off airplanes, they "disembark." People do not laugh, they "guffaw." Criminals do not go to jail, they land in the "big house." Insults are not hurled, "brickbats" are.
As he seeks the office of commander in chief, Mr. Romney can sometimes seem like an editor in chief, employing a language all his own.
...Asked about his boss's word preferences, Eric Fehrnstrom, a veteran Romney adviser, responded knowingly: "You mean like 'gosh, golly, darn'?"
But what they don't know is that in addition to French and Spanish Romney also speaks Jive.

Watch an Eyewitness to the Lincoln Assassination
As seen on 'I've Got a Secret' in 1956. Thanks to Lady Galt.
Around 10,000 years ago a single mutation suddenly let humans drink milk even after infancy and things were never the same.
Milk - it makes a civilization strong.
It was in these horrendous conditions that the lactose tolerance mutation took hold. Reconstructed migration patterns make it clear that the wave of lactose tolerance that washed over Eurasia was carried by later generations of farmers who were healthier than their milk-abstaining neighbors. Everywhere that agriculture and civilization went, lactose tolerance came along. Agriculture-plus-dairying became the backbone of Western civilization.
...The plot is still fuzzy, but we know a few things: The rise of civilization coincided with a strange twist in our evolutionary history. We became, in the coinage of one paleoanthropologist, "mampires" who feed on the fluids of other animals. Western civilization, which is twinned with agriculture, seems to have required milk to begin functioning.
Zombie Movie You Should Watch: Dawn Of The Dead (1978 )
Not quite as famous as the 1968 original this sequel pretty much laid out the fast-zombie horror movie genre. And it's completely available on YouTube.
Hippies in Action: Powder Ridge Rock Festival
It may have been 1970 but the hippie lifestyle and fashions were already clearly established. And 40 years later the Occutards are still mostly just copying their hippie grandparents.
Yes this link contains nudity - but it's hippie nudity. You have been warned/enticed.

Today, that Ed Worthless dude on MSDNC had on an ultralib feminist and a lib feminist, who both agreed that a certain Indiana senator's comments doomed Romney among women, and that social issues mattered much, much more than the economy to women voters. The tweets along the bottom of the screen indicated that the GOP would only be happy when women were disenfranchised.

Yep. Most of what Europeans (or the world for that matter) 'know' about the US just isn't true.
And given that they can only know Romney from their own biased media's interpretation of the MSM's portrayal of him, it's a wonder that he manages to outpoll ebola.

Don't say "Fuck Kenya" until you look at that second chart again. Kenya is the country that likes Romney the most! Seriously, compare the bars. Poland is the only other county where he gets about 15%. So what's going on? I wonder if it's tribal. Since the two big tribes are the Kikuyu and the Luo, and Obama's father was a Luo, maybe all the Kikuyus are cheering for Romney just to spite the Luos?

It's amazing to me how the Japanese really bought into our culture after defeat in WWII. To this day, there is a following of one of the hottest USA 50's groups, the Kingston Trio, who played an amalgamation of show/folk/calypso/parody/ethnic tunes. They have their own version of this group that still performs today.
That's funny. Mom and Dad used to listen the Kingston Trio. Day still has the albums,.

Or false damascus, in this case. True Damascus or watered steel is made from wootz steel, false damascus is made by layering two different types of ferrous metals together. A real viking would have used neither, since along with the rest of Europe they used pattern welding, in which the smith took several layered rods, twisted them at intervals, and them welded the rods together side-by-side to form a blade. Even cooler than damscus, I think.

1 they probably get all their info from the media etc, .
2 i think many countries are thrilled with a weak america., you know lordin it over them. holding them down.
of course those that might SEE their success wrapped into America's previous success and be also feeling the pain might feel differently
3 Many countries are also experiencing pain and might blame Booooosh, well media again.
4 many countries have moved left.
if we don't recover and do not send sweet cash and military aid in their time of need, i'm sure they might change their minds.
but who knows as i've lost faith in many of my own countrymen.
who knows.
media has to go down, is my only certainty.

Weather models are beginning to coalesce around an unlikely meteorological scenario: a hurricane blending with an inland snowstorm just in time for Halloween.
Before we get into that weather wonderland, Greater New York will enjoy pleasant afternoon temperatures in the low 70s for the rest of the week. For next week, however, it’s starting to seem like not a question of if but where this giant “snor’eastercane” might strike.

Yes, that begs a question from us, Mr. President. Some say you had a super majority in your first two years and had this incredible opportunity, but because of what you were talking about, as you were running, you had to go to get Obamacare done. Do you have any regrets taking on some of the economic issues, some of the issues that we’re talking about for your second term, that when you had the chance, so to speak, during your first — do you have any regrets that you didn’t do that at that time?
THE PRESIDENT: Absolutely not, Laura. Remember the context. First of all, Mitch McConnell has imposed an ironclad filibuster from the first day I was in office. And that’s not speculation. I mean, this is — it’s amply recorded. He gave a speech saying, my task is to defeat the President.

I know people in left-right marriages and the general prescription is to keep politics out of the relationship. Whether you think that's doable is your call.

However, the thing that's always interested me is how disinterested the left is in their Lightbringer's education. In his autobiography, he talks about being an indifferent high school student (which is objectively proven by him not being a National Merit semi-finalist).
So, he goes to college, and law school, and gets such a fine education that he is prepared for the highest office in the land. I'd be interested in the curriculum that could achieve that if I were a leftist who fetishizes higher education. I'd want to make it an example to all those who aspire to be like the Lightbringer.
Unless I was pretty sure it was all about "Deconstructing the Patriarchal Themes in Post-Colonial American Graphic Novels" or some rot, which I suspect deep down they know to be the truth. And the classes are separate from the grades, which I would wager are sub-par, given the evidence.

Josh,
I know what you're going through. When you're in a relationship to which you've committed your heart and soul the thought of breaking it off is agonizing. But the sense I get is that you're young. If you decide to call it quits you'll be OK and you'll learn from the experience. If you decide to keep going, you know some of the issues that you need to work out before you're in a tux and she's in a white dress.
If you decide to keep going, you should consider pre-marital counseling.

I had heard when I was cruising the Seven Seas from guys about pulling into Mombasa in the late 80's (when the tri-color Africa medallions were so popular) and the black Sailors being warned not to wear them while out on liberty. Evidently a few of them, as sailors are wont to do, ignored the advice and wound up getting their asses beaten by Kenyans that didn't take to kindly to their assertions of being long lost cousins.

WASHINGTON – Seven new charges have been filed against Floyd Lee Corkins II, the Virginia man accused of shooting a security guard at the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., in August, including one count of committing an act of terrorism while armed.
So that's terrorism, while the Ft. Hood shooter is merely charged with 'workplace violence'. Nope, no terrorism there. Move along, prole.

Not only that, it's a ticket to the hoosgow (sounds like Romney, eh?).
My firearms instructor said that in as much as you are only supposed to fire when in imminent danger, and providing you wing the aggressor well enough to stop them, your next problem will come from explaining to the police/judge why you took a chance on winging them instead of aiming for center mass.
If you are in fear enough to fire, then shoot to

I remember me spreading rumors to all her FB friends about her having the clap in response, then promptly unfriending her and harboring a secret desire to staple her husband's dick to the wall.
Oh, guess what? Divorced again.

My great grandmother was married to a civil war vet, he fought for General Lee. He was way older than she was, she died at 99 in 1976, he died in the 20's.
When she went into the hospital for the last time, she told the doctor that she had a drink every evening, and would be having one while there, he told her no. She said she would leave, he told her that she could have an ounce of whiskey. Her reply, "I wouldn't dirty my lips on an ounce of whiskey". My dad snuck her a bottle in. You did not say "no" to her.

About Obama and Romney in Colorado:
Red Rocks is a gorgeous venue that seats about 9,500. I heard that people were turned away, but no idea how many. Red Rocks is on the far western edge of the metro area. The burbs.
Obama was in City Park, in the middle of the metro area, near downtown, and even closer to uptown. There are thousands of apartments within walking distance, some blocks have 1,500 inhabitants. Some probably turned out to see if they might get a goodie, because, Obama! Photos should have been easy to get at City Park, someone must have gotten some shots.

I saw Zombi, but not Cemetery Man. I'll take a look at it.
I just liked the faster zombies in the remake of "Dawn of the Dead," as well as the ending of the movie. Plus, it felt more real (at least as real as that type of scenario can feel) compared to the older zombie movies. "28 Days Later" was good for those same reasons, too.

Its the one they decided to lie about this time around, like Florida used to be. They can't say it is lost to Obama, or its all over.
Posted by: Oldcat at October 24, 2012 11:25 PM (rzSn3)
The media is always running the election from 4 years ago. Back in 04, they were talking about Florida being the key state, and IIRC, Bush won that by 4 or 5 points. Ohio was the tipping state. This time around, they were focusing on the reliably GOP states that flipped last time around, but those are slipping into line for the GOP. This year, it will be a state no one was expecting like Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey.

Yes, I did. I actually agreed with that view for many years until I saw the DOTD remake in '04. I still like the slow zombies, like in "The Walking Dead" TV show and the original black-and-white "Night of the Living Dead" (and obviously in a real zombie apocalypse I would definitely prefer those zombies so I had an actual chance to kill them). But I've grown to like the fast zombies over the years.

no such thing as fast zombies, it's mutation/disease. Even if you go back to the voodoo zombies archtype in films, they moved slowly. The only real version of a "fast zombie" has been seen in HK horror films in the 70's and 80's and that more of them blurring the line of traditional hopping vampires with your traditional western zombie.

It was something about how at the beginning of the outbreak the bodies would not be as decayed, so those recently turned would be more mobile, but as the zombie apocalypse wore on and their bodies started to decay they would slow down.

Two older guys are sitting under umbrellas on Miami Beach, having a waiter bring 'em drinks every so often. After their drink orders start getting "synchronized" by the waiter so he needed to do fewer trips, one turns to the other while they're waiting and says, "so, how did you come to be here in beautiful Miami?"
Second guy goes, "well, I had my own business making custom furniture -- but, you know how it is, none of the kids wanted to carry on the tradition....they all wanted to be stockbrokers or lawyers or something. I was trying to think of how to wind things up when a fire broke out and burned the place to the ground. When the insurance check came in, me and the wife moved down here. How 'bout with you?"
First guy replies, "amazing coincidence -- I had my own business for thirty years, making custom papers for fancy books and custom artwork and such. Niche market, but a reasonable profit -- but you had to really know and take care of your customers. When my kids grew up, they decided that they'd rather deal with total strangers than guys their dad had spent three decades dealing with, so I was wondering what to do. Then, one night, a terrible flood came along and wiped out the shop with all our stock and equipment. There was obviously no point to rebuild, so we took the insurance money and.....here we are!"
Their drinks come, and they're sipping them, but the second guy is frowning a bit and getting increasingly agitated. After a few minutes, he finally turns to the first guy and blurts out, "the only thing I can't figure out is.....how the hell do you start a flood?"

Our cat was a calico too. She was a tough old thing but beautiful. I sometimes thought we should make her a member of the church. We lived right next door to it and if the door were open she'd walk right in-to church services, church meetings. Even my husband has gotten choked up about her dying.

Thats heartbreaking. Its horrible when they are such wonderful family members! (or even if they are not) But to have a church going cat is really neato.
i love Calicos too. They are all so special its like they got an extra dose of the same thing Ginger girls get. When you are ready, go check the shelter. mine has amazing cats. yours will too i am sure. There are many cool cats waiting to be adopted. But it will never be the same, just great in a different way.

The Pope just finished a tour of the East Coast and was taking a limousine to the airport. Since he'd never driven a limo, he asked the chauffeur if he could drive for a while. The reluctant chauffeur pulled over along the roadside, climbed into the back of the limo, and the Pope took the wheel. The Pope then merged onto the highway and accelerated to over 90 mph to see what the limo could do.
Suddenly, the Pope noticed the blue light of the State Patrol in his side mirror, so he pulled over. The trooper approached the limo, peered in through the windows, then said, "Just a moment please, I need to call in."
The trooper called in and explained to the chief that he had a very important person pulled over for speeding. "How do I handle this, chief?" asked the trooper. "Well who is it?" questioned the chief.
"I don't know, sir," replied the trooper, "but the Pope is his chauffeur."

I'll take the blame for the AquaFlage. Back in the 90's my ship was the designated Dog and Pony ship for DESRON ONE. 3 MCPON visits, 2 SECNAV visits in a 4 year span. Everytime uniforms came up, we told them we wanted something better than dungarees...something that would hide POL stains better and were easier to maintain. We asked for either coveralls for everyone or for some sort of urban camo type. I'd say be careful what you wish for, but I got out in '99.

After pratice, Alex was still there, so the pastor went up to him. Alex was gazing at a plaque on the wall filled with names and American flags beside them. Pastor what is this? Alex it is a memorial to all the men and women in our church who have died in the service. They stood there a few minutes looking at the plaque. Alex turned to the pastor and asked in a trembling whisper, Which service pastor, the 9:45 or the 11:15?

Two guys were out walking their dogs on a hot day, when they pass by a pub. The first guy says “Let’s go in there for a pint.” Second guy, says, “They won’t let us in with our dogs.” First guy: “Sure they will, just follow my lead.”
He goes up to the pub, and sure enough the doorman says, “I can’t let you in here with that dog.” He replies, “Oh, I’m blind and this is my seeing-eye dog.” The doorman says, “Ok then, come on in.”
The second guy sees this and does the same thing. He goes up to the pub, and the doorman says, “You can’t come in here with a dog.” He replies, “I’m blind and this is my seeing-eye dog.” The doorman responds, “You have a chihuahua for a seeing-eye dog?” The second guy stops for a second, and exclaims, “They gave me a chihuahua?”

Subject: Pretty or plain, heavy or thin, gay or straight, poor or rich
Dear fellow American,
I am not writing to you as a black voter, or a woman voter, or as a voter who is over 70 years old and six feet tall. I am writing to you as a representative of this great country -- as an American.
It is your job to vote. It is your responsibility, your right, and your privilege. You may be pretty or plain, heavy or thin, gay or straight, poor or rich.
But remember this: In an election, every voice is equally powerful -- don't underestimate your vote. Voting is the great equalizer.
Don't fool around with this: Make a plan to vote in this election.
Once you've done that, make sure everyone you know does the same.
As a country, we can scarcely perceive the magnitude of our progress.
My grandmother and my uncle experienced circumstances that would break your heart. When they went to vote, they were asked impossible questions like, "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" When they couldn't answer, they couldn't vote.
I once debated with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. about whether an African American would ever be elected president. He believed it would happen within the next 40 years at the time -- I believed it would never happen within my lifetime.
I have never been happier to have been proven wrong.
And since President Barack Obama's historic election, we've moved forward in courageous and beautiful ways. More students can afford college, and more families have access to affordable health insurance. Women have greater opportunities to get equal pay for equal work.
Yet as Rev. King wrote, "All progress is precarious."
So don't sit on the sidelines. Don't hesitate. Don't have any regrets. Vote.
Make a plan right now on when, where, and how you will cast your ballot -- and how many friends you'll bring with you to the polls:
And ask everyone in your life to do the same:
Your vote is not only important. It's imperative.
Thank you,
Dr. Maya Angelou
P.S. -- Not on Facebook? Send your friends to (no-linky-from-me) -- don't let technology get in the way of your incredible duty to our democracy.

The most valuable lesson anyone should take away from college, at any level even through post-Doc is that they don't know squat. If you can come away with that, it was worthwhile.
The second most valuable thing is to teach you how to research something, so you can do something about not knowing squat about something once you're out in the real world.
The mechanics of "teaching" in college are really just supplying a very rudimentary toolkit that allows you to continue your real education on the outside.

Also very good, I agree. As I said, I'm a bit biased. I think it's the small details in the original that really reflect the location and the era that I like the best (the rednecks drinking the Iron City beer in pull-tab cans and the gun store located in the mall, for example). In the remake I really like the main hero character, and the relationship they build up with the gun shop guy and his dog across the parking lot.

sometimes I think about whether MLK would have differed with leftist orthodoxy were he alive today. I admit I'm kinda cynical on these matters. In the late '60s he essentially endorsed an employment quota system based on the percentage of racial representation in an area for example.

I think he would have been cognizant of the slippery slope, and fretful of ending up on a "plantation" of special privileges.....and he had good reason to hate Democrats, so when they embraced the hard-left it would have probably poisoned him against the gaia-hugging, wealth-redistributing, luddite, economy-destroying, patronizing dits we have today.

Sounds like the fiance is the quintessential political nonthinker that leans left only because of osmosis - she went through college and absorbed the vibe.
So if she's the absorbent sort, after marriage she'll most likely drift ever and ever closer to your point of view -- your worldview will be the sea in which she drifts. And becoming a mother may well accelerate that shift.
At any rate, it's very unlikely she'll veer more leftward, and it doesn't seem that the politics matters so much to her that she'll let it be the thorn in your relationship -- unless an impatience to convert her inspires her to react with mulishness resistance.

Also, does anybody know what the penalty for violating this type of gag order is? It seems to me the loony ex-wife has violated it multiple times with her insane rants on HuffPo and her personal blog. If the judge lifts the gag order, would that protect her against penalties for previously speaking out about the case? Although not technically a "zombie" movie, 28 Days Later had fast "infected" first, and I think that's where the DotD remake got the idea. Loved 28 Days, too, especially the part where the chimps ate the enviro-terrorist's face. Even scarier now that we know chimps might eat your face without a zombifying rage virus...

Guy walks into a bar and there's a monkey there. The bartender says, "watch this" and hits the monkey repeatedly in the head with a bat.
The monkey then starts sucking the bartender's dick furiously.
The guy says "hey, can I try that?"
Bartender says "sure"
The guys says "Good, but please don't hit me with that bat"

Better yet, the mall the theater was in was VERY similar in layout to the one in the movie. Best of all, the theater was directly across from a JC Penney's almost identical to that in the movie. This really messed with a lot of head in that audience. At one point, when the JCP was shown from a certain perspective, I shouted out "They're coming for the theater!" I swear at least twenty people freaked and bolted out of the place.
Good times, good times.

As you said, it wasn't a zombie movie. It was a more obscure related genre: the insane people on a rampage movie. This was big in some foreign markets where you have some unfortunates lost at sea wash up on an island and discover it is an abandoned asylum for extremely violent lunatics.
A fantastically nasty take on this genre is the comics series Crossed, one storyline of which can be seen here: http://www.crossedcomic.com/
Extremely NSFW.
Kind of like 28 Days Later but rather than pure rage the contagion removes all inhibition of any sort and throws in a compulsion to act out the slightest nasty whim. The infected or crossed are recognized by the rash pattern that appears on their face.

That series was more notable for the chattiness of the zombies. Also the sexiness, especially int he third movie. It is where the 'Brains!' bit started. In those movies the zombies very in age from freshly dead to centuries old, and their rate of movement derived from that.
These were also intended as farce and thus regarded separately by the purists.
One variation I saw recently is a book called 'Breathers,' told from the perspective of a zombie in a world where rising is something that randomly happens to a small subset of people when they die. They posses intact minds but are greatly oppressed by the living. They're mostly well behaved and not cannibalistic but the protagonist discovers he can actually heal himself by consuming the living, up to the point of passing for alive and healthy. His zombie girlfriend even becomes pregnant. But of course there are those who find this whole business objectionable...

Never caught the sequels, but ROTLD was a farce, as you say, and pretty damn funny as well as being a great zombie movie. So humour disqualifies a zombie movie from being a zombie movie? I hear what you're saying and won't disagree, what with genres/sub-genres and whatnot. But, ROTLD, "Zombieland", "Shaun of the Dead" are THE zombie films for me. The thing about the "zombie perspective", motivations and cultural subtext and stuff is what makes Romero's films unlikable for me. Plus they're kind of clunky. "Dawn of the Dead" 2004 was freaking awesome though. That's a serious zombie flick that I can embrace.

I tend to categorize zombie movies, and then I have favorites of each type. Shaun of the Dead is my favorite zombie comedy, the original Dawn of the Dead is my favorite classic zombie movie and overall favorite, the remake is my favorite fast zombie movie. I think there's room in this world for all of God's zombies.
I agree, though, about Romero's heavy handed messaging. My biggest criticism of the original Dawn of the Dead is the whole "consumers are the real zombies" theme. It's not subtle, or all that original.
Posted by: not the mama at October 24, 2012 10:26 PM (kzCIn)
For myself, the fast zombie always seemed like a violation of a natural expectation that a zombie isn't going to be very coordinated because it has lost a lot of brain tissue before rising and can;t moved very well due to decomposition plus whatever caused the person to die in the first place.
The horror value to me came from the implacable foe that had very few advantages except for one: it would never stop coming after you and never get tired. If enough of them gather together they'll eventually wear down any barrier like a tide over the eons.
The fast zombie makes for an entirely different sort of threat. Might as well be wolves or some other attacking animal. It's a more obvious threat, closer to real life for our ancestors and thus less horrific. This is why I feel 28 Days Later and the insanity plague genre in general is a better place for this than the true zombie story.
An aesthetic choice but it's the little things that make the story work.

I didn't bother me much but I was also pretty young. I really wanted that Phase Linear turntable in the movie.
It was the later movies where Romero went from a bit preachy to downright obnoxious. Especially making Dennis hopper's character out to be a villain in 'Land of the Dead' when the character was truly heroic. He created a bastion of civilization amid the apocalypse and gets eaten by John Leguizamo for his trouble.

Yes, I agree for zombie movies I prefer the traditional slow zombies over the fast ones. It just seems to make more sense that something that has reanimated after death wouldn't be as fast as the living version. I also agree with your reasons for why zombies are scary. My husband, however, insists that in reality a zombie apocalypse with slow undead would never happen because the military would be able to contain the outbreak fairly easily. He also thinks rage virus plague scenarios (e.g. 28 Days, The Crazies) are much scarier because they actually exist (think bath salts), whereas zombies are purely hypothetical at this time.
