— Maetenloch Alrighty let's get down to it. Last call for the weekend.
Benghazi: "Where the *blank* is Spectre?"
Friday and Saturday, the news leaked out that Tyrone Woods was found dead, slumped over his ammo-exhausted machine gun on top of the Annex, where he and Glen Doherty had fought against 150 or so al-Qaeda affiliated Ansar al-Sharia militants who followed them from the embassy, waiting for Libyan forces to arrive and relieve them and the other US personnel stationed there, along with those they'd saved from the embassy complex. Rumor has it that the two former SEALs had killed 60 of those militants in the firefight.
Today, administration apologists were all over the networks talking about how unhelpful and partisan it is to demand answers from the White House, who want to get the answers more than anybody . . . after the elections.
At least when Shughart and Gordon went down fighting in the original Blackhawk Down incident they knew they were risking their lives in order to buy time for rescuers to get to pilot Mike Durant. Here Woods and Doherty apparently were abandoned to their fate while their hours-long final fight was watched from above.
Meanwhile the legacy media is still managing to keep the story cover-up going.
He's doing better and was well enough to enjoy the Diet Coke Smitty brought him.
Andrew Sullivan: Vote for Obama to Save the GOP
Here's Andrew Sullivan on This Week offering a novel rationale for voting Obama: With a little bit of luck, it just might prevent the GOP from going completely "insane."
Well Sullivan's views of conservatism have always been narcissistic - conservatism is whatever Andrew believes at the moment and its best course is always whatever would make him happiest.
The Fantasy of Thomas Friedman
Heh.
"I have fantasized - don't get me wrong - but that what if we could just be China for a day? I mean, just, just, just one day. You know, I mean, where we could actually, you know, authorize the right solutions . . ."

Gold - Now Available in Multiple Colors
Without anodizing or using alloying:
Unlike processes such as anodizing, in which colored films are added to metal surfaces, the Southampton technology works by actually altering the gold itself. Tiny raised or indented patterns are embossed onto its surface, changing the way that it absorbs and reflects light. Depending on the shape, height and/or depth of the pattern, that reflected light can be seen as any one of a number of colors. Different patterns could even be applied to the same object, causing different parts of it to take on different colors.
"This is the first time the visible color of metal has been changed in this way," said project leader Prof. Nikolay Zheludev.
Was actually a 7 foot tall Nigerian student who became part of cinema history by chance.
Study: Men Better Multi-Taskers Than Women
Sure honey I'm listening to your fascinating story as I comment on that pirate flag blog and keep an eye on the game.
"On the contrary, the results of our study show that men are better at multi-tasking than women," Timo Mäntylä, a psychology professor at Stockholm University, said.
Men are sometimes better than women at handling multiple tasks simultaneously, but the performance gap is correlated to the female menstrual cycle, according to his study, to be published in US peer-reviewed journal Psychological Science. In line with previous research, men and women with good so-called working memory were also better than others at multi-tasking.
However, Mäntylä found that the ability to combine several different tasks at once was also linked to spatial ability which, for women, is linked to their menstrual phase.
But then you have this study which says that women are better at multi-tasking. So there may even be different kinds of multi-tasking.
This reminds me of a study I heard about years ago when the Air Force was considering women pilots for combat roles. They found that male and female pilots performed equally well under normal conditions. But under extreme conditions with too many tasks to be done in too little time they both failed but in different ways: Men tended to just pick a single task (not necessarily the most important one) and focus on it to the exclusion of all others while women tended to spin through all tasks faster and faster until they became paralyzed.

Yeah, but I think it's extremely unlikely on both counts.
There'll be something symbolic on both. Think "Contract With America". And it will amount to the same.
We don't have the courts and we don't have the bureaucracy and we don't have the universities and we don't have the lawyers'-guilds like the SPLC.
Basically we just don't have the government in DC and we shall never get it.

We need people to talk to everyone about Benghazi this week. We had one guy I worked with that was really good at getting the word out about what Obama was doing. He was a Cuban Immigrant, and could not even vote. But he paid attention, and saw through the BS.
It was amazing to listen to him explain F and F, Obamacare, and other issues to people. They had no clue. No idea at all. They were all wrapped up in their kid's hockey, baseball, football, or drama club; the pro sports; or their motorcycle.
One time, Dave2 actually said, "That's impossible! No one would do something that stupid." And then I helped explain that yes, F and F was that stupid. And I printed out the story about how they were blamed 200 dead mexicans on F/F. They just let the guns go to bad guys.
Unfortunately for good or ill, many people just do not pay attention. We have EIGHT DAYS to make them pay attention.

Republicans should be starting to rumble about impeachment if the White House does not immediately provide who gave the order to not intervene.
No, the Republicans aren't going to impeach...they are too gutless...especially at this point - but someone like West making the threat gets this even more news coverage.
And in a sane world, Obama would be impeached for this, along with a half a dozen other crimes...

Those SEALS interfered with The Plan by coming to the rescue from a mile away when they heard the initial attack. Al quada was understandably pissed when they took huge losses when this was supposed to be a quick and easy snatch and grab of the unprotected Ambassador to use as a hostage for the release of the Blind Shiek. That's why no cavalry arrived for hours ....to give them time to get the Ambassador...and even when the 'rescue SUV's' got there, they left WITHOUT the Ambassador. So al quada brutalized the guy when they finally found him and lost their hostage in their anger.
Good work B+rry. You're a SNAFU genius. Did you think this up or did Holder? Was the Ambassador in on it or was this a perk of his job?

You know how I'd like to see a conservative respond?
"Well Tom, as you know America used to be able to build impressive projects in a short time, just as you now credit China. The reason we no longer can has nothing to do with our system of government - we were just as much a democratic Republic when we were building the interstates or the Hoover dam.
The difference is we didn't have legions of government funded environmental groups stopping any and every project, private or public, that might actually provide more opportunity for Americans. The problem isn't democracy, the problem is the lawyers and bureaucrats that subvert it. "

Interesting. When in such a situation, where further time spent on planning task order is obviously not going to improve efficiency, I definitely pick one task out of the group - some combination of easiest/fastest/most important and bang through it before trying to reassess the list of things to do.
I think the only other option is the sort of analysis paralysis that the study found...

This is an interview conducted with a former member of a Combatant Commanders In-Extremis Force (CIF), the type of unit based in Sicily that was ready to go to Benghazi but was prevented.
The interview was conducted by Lt. Bryan Suits, a combat veteran of Desert Storm, Kosovo, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Both "Operator D" and Suits say that Panetta is lying about the reason for not sending in troops and the amount of information the Pentagon and the White House had.
The CIFs are on call 24 hours a day. Their weapons and equipment are already packed. They were organized to respond to exactly what happened in Benghazi. Risk and information are not part of the calculus in using them. They are are the "firefighters" of the army, a "green-light" organization that is not told to go; they're only told to not go.
And only one person has the authority to tell them to stand down.
This is one of the most criminal acts of dereliction of duty by an administration. Every single person from Obama down--except maybe for Petraeus--is complicit. This was a full-scale military assault by 150 men, and the administration knew it right from the start. Our people were allowed to die, and everyone in the administration is now lying about it.
Discussion of the CIFs begins at 5:58.

What is a conservative Republican by the way? I mean I've seen so-called conservatives call a congressman a RINO because he voted for one bill that they didn't like. Then Ron Paul is called a true conservative yet supports Nader, Cynthia McKinley, and kisses Barney Frank's ass. I agree with Mr. Paul on a lot of things, but he's voted for some things that I've questioned before too. So where's the perfect conservative? Look at everyone's record in congress, and you will find something that you don't like about them. One of my favorite guys in congress is Ted Poe, but even he has voted 'yes' on some bills I don't agree with.
But I still don't get this conservative Republican thing---even Reagan did some things that made me mad and I loved that man dearly. I can understand holding Republicans' feet to the fire about issues----especially bailouts, health care, and spending, but this purist test doesn't help the party at all.

You know I am getting sick of this COVER UP BS...from who once again the MSM GODS!! what is it with Conservatives, if we hate the MSM why the heck do we measure everything based on if they carry it or not...WHO THE HECK CARES for God's Sake. Get over the crying of the MSM...IT WILL NEVER FING CHANGE!! when will that get through some conservatives heads!
Cry and boo hoo over the MSM cover up. Well guess what cry babies...it is all over the Internet, Fox, Talk Radio, Twitter and every place else. There is no Cover Up in coverage it is everywhere. So stop your darned pathetic whining over the MSM...that is all you ever hear...boo hoo..ABC, NBC, CBS, NYT will not cover....like so what!
Lets see how many of us can count on one hand how many people only look to the MSM for News....it is ridiculous. The President is being asked in interviews, he cannot hide, it is dogging him constantly and it is ALIVE AND WELL....the alternative media is sticking it to Obama left and right on his Disgraceful handling of Benghazi.
I cannot stand Obama and his lies and oh yes he is covering up...my point is NO he is not getting away with it. He holds no Press Conferences so when can anyone even ask him. He is a coward. The MSM does not have ratings, they do not control the news...if that was the case...Obama would be up 20 points in the polls...
Be proud that the alternative media is grilling Obama over Libya and it continues to get worse for him...and most people, like most of us, can find news all over the internet about Libya that the MSM does not control or contribute. I am sorry but we need to get past the MSM....it has been over for years and it will not change. Stop whining about it and worrying about it.
Accept the larger alternative media is sticking it to Obama and his disgusting Adm. Independents can read and see what he is doing and not doing just like us. Give others credit! Libya is sinking Obama more and more each day. Fox has the largest Cable News outlet that dwarfs CNN/MSNBC and they have been relentless...it the Internet and US are not going to let Obama get away with it. The MSM is on its way out with smaller audiences and no one trusts them at all...except the far left!

The initiative led to at least two US-Iran meetings, the report said. Israel was made aware of the contacts, and opposed them.
But Iran rebuffed the “diplomatic hand” offered by the White House, Maariv reported. The Islamist regime “opposed any sign of normalization with the US, and refused to grant a ‘prize’ to the Americans,” according to an anonymous Israeli source quoted by the paper.
The information — the lead item on Maariv’s front page, headlined “Obama offered to renew relations with Iran” — comes on the heels of reports earlier this month that the US and Iran held back channel contacts toward establishing direct talks over Tehran’s nuclear program. Both the White House and Iran denied those reports.
According to Maariv, Deputy Secretary of State William Burns met with chief Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili for an hour in 2009, and one other meeting between officials from both sides took place as well.
Included in the diplomatic incentives package offered by Washington would be, in the first stage, the opening of interest sections in Washington and Tehran, with the possibility subsequently of expanding to full diplomatic ties, including US and Iranian embassies and ambassadors in each otherÂ’s capitals, Maariv claimed.
As part of restored diplomatic relations with Iran, Maariv reported, Washington was ready to hold senior level diplomatic contacts, to agree to reciprocal visits, to approve security cooperation between the countries, direct flights between the US and Iran, and the granting of visas to Iranians wishing to visit the US.
The report, if true, would indicate a readiness by Obama to oversee a sea change in American policy toward Iran. The two countries have not had direct diplomatic relations since the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979-1981, when the Shah was overthrown during the Iranian Revolution and workers in the American Embassy held hostage for over a year. The US currently maintains a trade embargo with Iran and any diplomatic contacts are officially handled through third parties
According to Maariv, Iran also rejected the attempt to reestablish ties out of fear that the regime in Tehran would become weakened by normalization with Washington.

The country cannot survive with it's public information channels clogged and cloaked by partisan operatives to such a degree as has happened in the last 25 years.
A code of conduct or ethically oath like lawyers have? (no wise cracks it works)
A system of transparency so that anyone who reports news must reveal their past associations and current investments like politicians have to.
I don't know. It has to be something that will mesh with the first amendment but puts limits on what lies and manipulations they can get away with.

Not trying to be condescending, but for a party you have to have a composition of ideologies. If you want your party to be national and not just regional, then you have to accept that a Republican in Mass will not be as conservative as a Republican in Utah.
I'm a conservative and not a Republican, but I recognize that we have two parties in this country and seeking ideological purity guarantees you will get no loaf at all.

Tyson Woods father this week broke my heart. I am ready to storm the gates for these SEALS who died needlessly. I am livid.
We have to win. We simply have to send these worthless thugs packing.
Do not let this story die or be blown by the wind of Sandy. I figure Sand is moving pretty fast for a hurricane (we have them stall and loop back on us, or come up the Atlantic, cut across the state, and then loop back. As we are Floriduh and special like that). I am praying for all in Sandy's path, but at least he/she is not stalling (or not the last I checked).
Mr. Windbreaker-pants bossing FEMA around like he knows what he is talking about (see: Bobby Jindal) and posting for cameras is probably hoping to be Super Squirrel to the rescue. In reality, people will be ticked off at him and not have time to vote. Those states would go to him anyway, I guess. But, you know news cycles, in 48 hours pffft, on to something else unless it is Katrina, which it is not. There will be flooding. There will be power outages. There will be mayhem by the Occupy peoples and youths, just because. But I don't think there will be a prolonged news cycle with him looking like he rode into town on his stallion. Maybe a squirrel riding into town on his moped. Have I said, today, how much they disgust me?
I am recording Bret Baier's special on Benghazi. I watched part of it and it is very good. Thank God for FOX. Thank God for people trying to get answers. Do not let these dead Americans down. If you are not evacuating, call the news agencies and ask why they are not reporting the, uh, news.

Time after time, Republican just meant "socialism a little slower." I won't make fun of people who don't like that. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.
Republicans are for Missouri statehood, a Kansas with no slavery, and federal subsidy for a transcontinental railroad. Always have been, too. Like a sacred trust.

One that I don't see represented is "y'iz," which is a very local colloquialism to the less-educated on the south coast of Bristol County from Buzzard's Bay through about Attleboro... A very small geographical area with maybe 400k residents and no city bigger than about 55k.

We shall see if they (Alabama) survives the test against LSU in Baton Rouge. Take a look...Texas Tech loses to Oklahoma but destroys West Virginia. Kansas State destroys not only Texas Tech but also West Virginia at Morgantown. Kansas State also beats Oklahoma at Norman. Alabama has only played one seriously ranked team at killed them at home. Don't be so assured the SEC is all that this year.

Ohio
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.

hmmm...Who else beat OU in Norman in a night game? I'm not saying Notre Dame is on the same level as Bama or KSU, but it makes me happy to see them in the same conversation. I was inclined to believe the gamblers' wisdom that OU would cover, even though they were -12.5, but last night both OU and ND played clean games - few penalties and only one (OU) turnover overall. The Fighting Irish have earned their way back to national prominence.

Re: Kosher shelters--There are 1.5 million Jews in New York City. About 1/3 of them are Orthodox, most of whom live in low-lying parts of Brooklyn that are likely to get swamped by Sandy. The Orthodox take kashruth very seriously, and since there are hundreds of thousands of them, and since kosher food is readily available in NYC, providing them with kosher shelter seems eminently reasonable to me.
By the way, the Orthodox are increasingly likely to vote Republican--treat them nicely.

Yes, I'm being a crybaby by being outraged that the majority of the country's major news outlets are refusing to even mention the worst dereliction of duty by an American president in history, which allowed American citizens to be murdered simply so the president could be reelected.
I'm being a crybaby by being outraged by every single person in the administration--possibly even a man I admire greatly, General Petraeus--letting the president skate on this criminal act.
I'm being a crybaby by being outraged by the corruption and compromising of every single one of our institutions, including the federal government, our media, our military, and our intelligence apparatuses.
This is just whining on my part. I really should grow up.

I hope I'm not misunderstanding you as you covered a lot of pastures in your post--not to mention I've had a couple of glasses of wine--but what I got was you think conservatives should want to keep everything the same as it's always been. My conservatism is the kind that believes a lot of what we've been doing has worked for a long time. It doesn't mean there's no room for improvement, but that change should be looked at skeptically and with a great appreciation for unintended consequences.
To name a specific, immigration--which seems to divide "country club" Republicans from paleoconservatives (which is more my style). I would love to think Mexicans can be assimilated into the American melting pot just as so many previous waves of immigrants have. What I've seen so far in the American West, however, makes me skeptical.
I will discuss it with country club Republicans, provided they not take the "you're a racist" approach (just as a Democrat would) or the Rick Perry tactic of telling me I don't have a heart. It seems reactionary to me to think immigration is something that can be prevented without draconian methods that are as counter freedom as market controls would be. Even so, let's not commit cultural suicide in the name of libertarian principles.
Pragmatism does not have to mean a lack of principles but rather than one's principles are pragmatic rather than quixotic.

I prefer Constitutionalist. or some similar form that carries the same connotation that one prefers that the States, Federal Goverment, elected representatives and senators adhere strictly to the original document and amendments.
This would also include the oversight and the reining in of the overreach performed constantly by the SCOTUS by Congress.
The addition of regulations governing swift penalty upon those who deviate from that constitution would be a pro pos but not mandatory.
In the sense we are "conserving" and preserving the original plan as set forth is a possible interpretation that may be useful.

There are country clubs and country clubs, I imagine, but my idea of a country-club repub would quietly see to it that the flow of cheap labor was not shut off. While giving a speech on our national honor, of course. And they'd put out a lot of melting-pot gravy, too, so you wouldn't notice that we'd pulled down the fence and left the gate open and not even asked our new citizens to sign in. Those poor anchor babies -- who'll look after them? But I get the feeling you didn't really want to talk about immigration.
One embarrassment in the GOP tradition is that they inherited the Whigs' "internal improvement" yen, and it has caused them again and again to intervene in the economy, and make federal "investments," that play to the other side's advantage. It's been the Wobblies and the Chamber of Commerce arguing over who gets your money, and control over your dealings and this or that aspect of your life.
No one now alive, or their grandparents, ever saw unfettered capitalism, or a market dominated by small businesses. Some conservatives would like to see that once before they die. In a well-rounded, complete and socialized Republican party, they never will. It has never been what the big Party stood for.

When Shugart and Gordon went down that day to provide cover for the downed Blackhawk, they were not sure how many were still alive (only Mike Durant survived), but were almost sure they were going on a one way mission due to the dearth of any expected relief coming. They were brave men, who gave their last full measure to save their teamates. It wasn't told in "Blackhawk Down", but the wounded and crippled Mike Durant was later clubbed with the arm of one the Delta guys the Sammies had ripped off his body. It was estimated that Shugart and Gordon killed or wounded over 300 Sammies before they ran out of ammo. With their heavily modified M14's that they carried.
Woods and Doherty were expecting relief soon from the mobilized operators that were standing by in Signorella (Sicily). It would have been a couple of hours, but they were expecting relief would come. Their cover fire didn't help Ambassador Stevens, but it did buy time for 20 other embassy employees to escape to the "safe house" nearby. Even the CIA on the ground was mystified by the lack of relief sent.
Why Panetta and Obama did not allow relief to come is a mystery, to be sure. I would not trust Hillary! on anything she says after the fact, because she has played along with the lie just like they did. My guess is that Obama already knew that Stevens was dead, and did not see the point in killing a bunch more "brown people" to extract a couple of ex-military "pawns" in the great game of nations.
Obama, like Clinton before him, is at times very intellectually flaccid, despite claims to his high IQ. They were both lazy about keeping up with their daily intelligence briefs, and tried to catch up. Careless, lazy "intellectuals", careless with people's lives.

I once asked a friend who was walking a line for Consolidated Freightways why she was doing it.
She: Because the unions are trying to protect us from part-time workers taking our jobs.
Me: So, what happens if the union bankrupts the company? I mean, they aren't making any money while you're out here walking the line for a fraction of your working wages.
She didn't like the tone of my question.
So, I asked her just how damned good her union representation could be if every single time the contract came up for renewal, she found herself on strike or threatening to strike.
She didn't like that question either.

The success of anything is a product of the thing and its environment. I don't think a conservative can be religious even about capitalism and think it optimal for every environment or situation.
As a guiding principle, small is good--in government and in business. Much of the purpose of government in my opinion is to prevent power from being concentrated in violation of this principle: you want a government strong enough only to keep the playing field level, not to--as Romney said in the debate--try to pick winners and losers.
The natural tendency, however, is for power to draw more power to itself, even in the market place. I don't think it's possible for an unfettered capitalism of small businesses to exist--at least not for any reasonable time. As Adam Smith wrote, "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices."

The key is to recognize the problem before they become big businesses.
1) Death penalty as an option for criminal and civil suits against corporations. Not "Eliminate the company", but "Split the company into five slices so they farking realize they've done something wrong and avoid it next time instead of just passing the fees to the consumer." Bankruptcy breaks contracts - allow suits to break the contracts (golden parachutes) with the executives steering the ship.
2) Too big to fail means too big. If you're actually such an important business, we shouldn't be single-sourcing this stuff anyway. Do the same thing as 'Death Penalty', but decide to bail out the slices if you have to.
3) The anti-trust stuff should kick in as soon as there are 10-or-fewer companies in the field. The default answer should be only waver between "No" and "Hell No" on mergers of the top tier.

Try not to be too driven to reach a objective. My father took me and my brothers on a canoeing trip in the Boundary Waters. He had a goal to travel X miles per day. I would have been happier to have gone out to a remote location, set camp and explore. I may have learned an important life lesson from his goal oriented style but something to think about in planning your trip so the boys will look forward to a second.

That's a quote from Hegel. It's the Hegelian synthesis.
How did I maneuver you way over there? All right, "capitalism" is Marx's term, and real gentlemen don't use it. Maybe I should have said free enterprise, or individual entrepreneurs. Looking past that, if a conservative isn't "religious" (your term) about capitalism, he's just a Tory. You can't possibly mean that, so I'm going to just let this go.
Maybe we'll talk another time.

After the 1st Gulf War I went to Korea, so I didn't deploy to Somalia. When that mess went down, and it came out that Aspin turned down requests to use armor, as it wouldn't look good (but dead Americans dragged through the streets looked just dandy), you could hear the jaw of every soldier/sailor/airman/marine in the ROK clench, teeth being ground into nubs in anger.
Interestingly, Aspin was in Korea several months later for a big conference. I was tasked to work for said conference (the downside of having a TS clearance). I didn't see a single uniformed individual even look at Aspin, never mind talk to him if not absolutely necessary. I think that the fat fuck died shortly after this.
He broke faith with those soldiers. While on active duty, I was willing to go anywhere my country needed me, no matter the circumstances or danger. All I expected was that the civilian leadership would not abandon me and my brothers in arms. Aspen broke that faith. Now so has Panetta.

Is there a problem with that?
Here is the thing with the Mormonism issue. You will hear no one speak of T'eo or his faith in an ill way- and they shouldn't. Catholic or not, he is a superb ambassador for the school itself, and an excellent example of what it means to be a faithful God-fearing human being. Everyone who speaks of T'eo talks about his morals, his character, his decency. Again, as well they should.
BUT, we have a man running for the President of the US. And, he is a Mormon. And people seem to be using his faith to detract from his morality. Some extremists won't even vote for him, because he is not a "real" Christian. He believes in God and proclaims Christ as his Savior, that's good enough for me. Some people on the left use his faith to show how backwards he is. How his non-smoking, non-drinking, non-swearing, is actually a BAD thing. He's less relatible. He thinks its the 1950s. Still others fear the effect that his Mormon faith can have on social issues, like abortion and gay marriage. Those Mormons are so dang intolerant, you know.
Why is it that Manti T'eo's Mormanism is wonderful, because it shaped him into a moral young man, but Mitt Romney's Mormanism is detestable, because it shaped him into a bigoted intolerant man?
Posted by: Tickled Pink at October 29, 2012 12:37 AM (wdXri)
Huh??? I wasn't criticizing him - I was just stating a fact. I happen to have a lot of admiration for Mormons, but Notre Dame is a Catholic school and when T'eo referred to his faith, I thought most people would assume he was Catholic. I figured it would be interesting that he is Mormon, JUST LIKE OUR PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE, who is ALSO a wonderful person, in my estimation. What did I say that set you off?

George Romney really was a heck of a nice guy -- he made 60's moderate republicanism look good, as opposed to Nelson Rockefeller, who never could. He had rock solid civil rights credibility. People liked him. Maybe just not enough. I was in a good spot to hear any "whispering campaign" against his religion among protestants, and I never did.

The Major religions had the power back then (had not sold their souls to the govt yet). It was a big deal when Kennedy the first Catholic ever to be elected President happened. Catholics were the minority religion of that time thought to be nuts for their extra bible books. No Idea why a Mormon got a pass back then.

Dangerous to rocks and trees, maybe. The one I've got my eye on is the Hayward fault. It tends to pair up with the San Andreas fault system within 30 years (as in, a big one in one strongly implies a big one in the other with a 30-year window), and the San Andreas fault last kicked loose in 1989. The Hayward fault runs under a huge number of people from San Jose to Oakland and up through Richmond.

The so-called "evangelical" vote as a faction of politics became emergent (again) after Roe v. Wade came to be. I don't really thing that the Evangelicals were all that enthused about Carter, although Jean Carter Stapleton (Jimmy's cousin) was a big Baptist Evangelical at the time.
There have always been cycles to religious involvement in American politics throughout history.
One was the Abolitionist movement prior to the Civil War. John Brown would have been thought of as one of those nutty "Evangelicals" in this day and age (and he was nuts, too). He smuggled guns into Kansas as "Brown's Bibles" to arm the Kansans against raiders from Missouri.
Another period of religious involvement in American politics was the Temperance Movement, which reached a climax in Prohibition.

GW Beagle: You mean Willard "Mitt" Romney, not George, his father.
They were Mormons in a "colony" in Mexico to prosletize for Mormonism. His father and his family left during the Mexican Revolution.
The thing that screwed George the father up was his comment about being "brainwashed" by the Generals in Viet Nam after he made a fact-finding trip their in 1967.
In retrospect, although he was ridiculed for it, he probably was "brainwashed". The Obama Administration is trying to brainwash the public right now about what actually happened in Benghazi on Sept 11-12.
With great power comes the great temptation to lie about a lot of things to maintain the appearance of omnipotence and being all knowledgeable.
Obama, being the mis-informed and intellectually flabby poltroon that he is, lies about quite a lot of things, because he is too lazy to be schooled and briefed in the facts by his staff. Clinton lied about a lot of things because he was a pathological liar. It was the only way he could get by in his life, because of his ridiculous propensity for adultery and his other sins of avarice.

I tend to rail on disestablishment. The naive wonder at how the young republic could not deal with the problem of slavery. The reason it was not seen as the foremost ethical issue in the first generation is that the states were dealing, one at a time, with two other big issues: disestablishment of state religion, which involved finding a new place for religion's influence in society; and property rights of women, of course involving many personal and contractual rights as well, which newly modern Europe had glossed over after centuries of what would look to us as deliberate abuse. They were busy -- and besides, that 1808 deadline had looked to the framers as a date certain.
So, the sudden onslaught of "divines" without sinecures, together with women who either had money of their own or were the socially-active half of newly wealthy couples in business, made for fertile ground for American Victorianism and its very good intentions. Perhaps the reason these female-centered ventures so often made the moral mistake of using government as the means of relief and reform was, that near their head was always a disestablished minister, who had gone through divinity school expecting a guaranteed income and a lot of social influence, and felt cheated by being turned out of government.

Andrew Sullivan is a crazed, dope - smoking Brit who has overstayed his welcome, and is suffering dementia from his HIV-AIDS infection.
He is paraded on the Sunday blab-fests because he speaks with a clever British accent which many Americans mistake for some kind of superior intellect. We have been conditioned to believe that.
His knowledge of American history is quite suspect, as is his ridiculous analogies to the nature of things during the Civil War, War Between the States, whatever.
Indiana will go for Mitt next week, they were never part of the Confederacy. As will Ohio , and possibly New Hampshire, Michigan and Wisconsin (it will be close). And let's not even mention the vast swath of Western states that were only territories in 1865 that will go with Mitt.
Sullivan says hyperbolic things like that to get quoted and repeated. He is getting free advertising for his blog. Who would read this tripe? Well we are told that Barack Obama reads Sullivan's blog. So that right there tells you who is demented and who follows the thoughts of the demented.

How did O, Hillary, Panetta, Petraus - anyone close to Obama as events were unfolding on 9/11 - think Obama could refuse help, and that it could be kept a secret? I think there were 30-something people evacuated from Benghazi, not to mention all of the CIA, military, state dept, etc people in the US and other places that were aware of what was happening. Way too many people, and way too visible a situation to keep a lid on it, even if he thought the media would help him.
It's inconceivable that the people around Obama thought not sending help could be suppressed, or that the public wouldn't be outraged when they found out. How could O thin he'd get away with this? Even if he cared only about his re-election, leaving the people in Benghazi to twist in the wind doesn't help him at all.
Did he somehow think this was his best course of action? I'm beginning to think something even worse than arms collection is being covered up. (They could spin that as loose arms from when Gaddafi was ousted even if they were US supplied.) In what scenario is O letting people die the better optics for him?

jimi ray - (and then I am out)
I have known and worked with quite a few "gay" men in my life. My uncle was a gay man, and also a staunch Republican.
Some gay men act in a normal way in social situations with hetero people, and their homosexual proclivities are reserved for private (like my late uncle), which is the way people, hetero or homo-, should behave.
Some people are narcissists and want to display what they are for the whole world to see and demand that you must judge and accept them. Andrew Sullivan is just such a homo-centric man. He is a self-centered narcissist. People, regardless if they are straight or gay, become irritating when they are essentially one issue trick ponies. And that's Sullivan. For all his pretentious preening, the one thing he cares about most is his homosexuality. That drives every other judgement that he makes. He professes to be a Catholic, yet most of his utterances are completely at odds with Catholic teachings, and not just about homosexuality. He thinks Modern Catholicism should be shaped around what he thinks.
So yes, for THAT gay man, it is all about him. He is the male emotional equivalent of some self-centered Diva.

Mayday @ 671
It's always been this way with Obama. He made a decision not to intervene to relieve the folks at the consulate, and then tried to back-justify it. The story about the video on YouTube worked for a few weeks, but now reality is leaking in. Obama thinks he can always re-order reality to suit his whim, and his enablers in the MBM have let him do it more often than not in the last four years.
Once the 'truth' (whatever it is, being pieced together by normal people) goes viral, Obama's credibility will be shot. Even if he is re-elected, he is in trouble. And I doubt he gets re-elected.

At the very bottom of the thread some Libs come in to the rescue.
I guess their argument is
1) Ras and Gallop are notoriously wrong and R enablers and oversample Rs
2) national polls dont matter because Romneys lead is from the souther racist states where he is getting 90% of the vote and the way gallop and ras sample that affects the over all numbers which makes it look like Romney is ahead but he isnt really.
3) Obama is really ahead because the polls skew too favorably to Romney and they are wrong.
4) Obama is winning latinos by 50% and thats gonna win him the election.
5) state polls are the only ones that matter and PPP has obama ahead consistantly
6) the Youth are going to turn out huge for obama because 10 million more youth can now vote that have come of age since 2008 and they will resoundingly vote obama
7) Unicorn farts smell like fabreeze
Obama is half black so he has to have a big cock and if you are going to do it with a guy your first time it should be cause he has a big cock.
9) Just because you see 10x as many yard signs for Romney only means its astroturfing not enthusiasm
10) Romney has never been ahead in OH NC VA FL WI CO NH and he is going to lose all those states.
11) Obama will Win with even more electoral votes than last time or something
12) romney has to win FL VA NC and IOWA WI CO and NH if he cant win OH or something
13) and more shit like that.

My assumption is that the Fox story is somehow flawed / false. Otherwise, it's one of those situations that has no good explanation other than "our government is run some evil bastards" -- sort of like how Fast and Furious has no good explanation other than as a ploy to run up Mexican deaths as a pretext for more aggressive gun control legislation.
So either monumental incompetence, or sheer evil. For the sake of the country, I keep hoping both end up due to incompetence, but they look more and more like evil.

That's roughly true. Without Ohio, Romney has to pick up the slack elsewhere, which is probably Wisconsin and either Iowa or NH. And that assumes Romney takes Colorado and loses Nevada and PA.

no doubt.
i have no problem with you calling a spade a spade, and "all about him" fits the self-absorbed political fits of andrew sullivan to a "t".
i just don't think it's necessarily responsible to associate an entire subset of the population -- "when you are a gay man" -- with the more narcissistic and immature of their "peers", that's all.
there are more republican gays than you might think, and there are plenty more educated, fiscally conservative guys who just happen to like guys ripe for conversion...but not so long (and i'm not accusing *you* in particular) as some conservatives can't get rid of their reflexive rhetoric.

I agree about Obama. My amazement is about the people around him - Hillary, Panetta, Petraus, etc. People that are not as delusional and self centered as Obama, that would have foreseen that events could unfold as they have. Again assuming O is mainly concerned about his re-election, some of these people would have appealed to that motive, pointed out to him that refusing to send help could hurt his re-election chances. (If I was in their shoes and wanted to help the people in Benghazi, I'd probably appeal to his ego like this.). I don't love Hillary but I think she's smart enough, and experienced enough, to know what a PR nightmare could happen. And I think she would actually want to help the people in peril. In fact I assume a lot of the leaks are coming from her/Bill/State dept as well as others.
I just don't see how a group of people could have gone along with this, knowing there would be a good chance it would hurt each of them politically not to mention actually wanting to help their fellow Americans. They would have known it was a disaster in the making on multiple levels.
There are 3 major fuckups and cover ups going on...events before, during and after the night of 9/11/12.

I looked at some of the publicly available code for various models NOAA and other govt agencies use a few years ago. Maybe 6-8 of them.
They were crap in terms of the numerical methods they used. They desperately needed to employ the services of a computational math expert. Only one looked like the code was written by a pro, the rest looked like code written by 3rd year engineering or science students.
