OMG 18% of Americans Think Obama is Jewish!

Well that's the breathless coverage that a recent AP poll has been getting:

Eighteen percent of Americans inexplicably think that President Barack Obama is Jewish, according to a new poll.

A survey commissioned by the Associated Press and conducted by GfK asked respondents to identify Obama's religion from a list of possibilities. Thirty five percent said Obama had no religion, 28 percent correctly identified Obama as a protestant Christian, another 28 percent declined to answer, 18 percent said he was Jewish, 10 percent said he was Muslim and five percent said he was Catholic. Another two percent each said they didn't know, or named some other religion.

More think he's Jewish than Muslim? This seems well....just weird.

Is it true? Nope.

No - 18% of Americans Do NOT Think Obama is Jewish

In fact the whole thing was just the result of a typo in the AP's results:

The Associated Press/GfK poll statistic, absurdly indicating that more Americans believe Obama is Jewish (18%) than Muslim (10%), is inaccurate and the consequence of a simple typographical error, AP quickly ascertained and confirmed, after The Times of Israel called to point out the mistake. AP immediately moved to correct the error in its survey data.

The self-evidently ridiculous finding, which was nonetheless widely reported by the Jewish Chronicle, Israel National News, Haaretz and numerous minor websites on Sunday and Monday, is a consequence of a missing zero in the tabulated results of the survey, as the most cursory glance at the polling data immediately shows.

obamaisjewishnot

But apparently cursory glancing is simply beyond the layers and layers of media fact-checking. In fact when it comes to statistics most reporters seem to be dumber than even the average person - who bless their little hearts are quite special themselves in this area.

Other giveaways to the non-retarded that this result might be bogus:

  1. No one thought he was Jewish in 2010 - why would this suddenly jump to 18%? Likewise why would 28% of people start refusing to answer?
  2. All the percentage figures on the right add up to 128%. WTF?
  3. Does this result even make sense at all - has anyone anywhere ever claimed Obama was Jewish?

And this media stats tardation was no exception. For instance how much of this hand-wringing quote from NPR's Robin Young is actually true?

A new survey conducted by Chicago's McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum, which has yet to open, finds that only 28 percent of Americans are able to name one of the constitutional freedoms, yet 52 percent are able to name at least two Simpsons family members.

Correct answer: 0%

In the passage quoted above, Robin Young states the survey result incorrectly - actually, 73% of respondents, not 28%, were able to name one of the five freedoms guaranteed by the first amendment - and she spins it in a doubtful direction to boot, because only 65% were able to name one of the Simpsons characters.

Was this mere stupidity or journalistic incompetence? Well when it comes to the MSM, the answer is yes!

But one thing you can be sure of is that whenever you see an article titled that says 'Fewer/More Than X% of Americans Believe Y', you can be 98.6% sure it's bullshit.

Chicago's New Plan to Tax Guns Out of Existence

If you can't just ban'em, maybe you can tax'em to death:

Toni Preckwinkle, president of Illinois's Cook County Board, which includes Chicago, has proposed new taxes of $25 on each gun sold and a nickel for each bullet sold. According to the Wall Street Journal, the bullet levy would amount to a 200% tax on .22 caliber ammunition.

Preckwinkle's message to the NRA? "You're welcome to sue," she said. "We've looked at this and we believe we can survive any challenge."

But it turns out that the Supreme Court has ruled that states may not take away fundamental rights nor put undue (tax) burdens on them:

The Supreme Court has recognized that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right "to keep and bear arms," which cannot be denied by the state. That means government cannot banish guns directly - nor can it do so indirectly by taxing guns out of existence.

Consider the First Amendment. The Supreme Court has struck down taxes that burden First Amendment rights: In 1983, it declared that Minnesota's excise taxes on ink and paper violated freedom of the press. In 1936 the Court struck down Louisiana law that imposed special taxes on large-circulation papers. Liberals celebrate these precedents, and have waged a preemptive battle against any taxes that would burden the Roe v. Wade right to abortion.

Challenge accepted.

Argo: An Iranian Hostage's Review

The movie has been getting pretty good reviews and here Mark Lijek, one of the hostages smuggled out of Iran in 1980 by CIA agent Tony Mendez, gives his take on the movie.

Argo, Ben Affleck's new movie about the rescue of six Americans from Iran, is a terrific thriller, even if you know the ending. I left the theater sweating-just as when I exited the airport bus to board a Swissair flight out of Tehran in January of 1980, one of the six Americans who were rescued by Tony Mendez, the CIA employee Affleck plays. Affleck's version of events is not only a well-told tale, but a useful story, a necessary and enjoyable mechanism for introducing a younger generation to the origins of our confrontation with Iran. But for me, Argo is also a peek into a nightmarish alternate universe of how things might have been.

Reason #24 Why You Must Guard Your Sperm Carefully

Whenever anyone just wants a wee sample with no strings attached - there are always strings attached:

Mark Langridge didn't want children, but his lesbian friends did - so he agreed to donate his sperm.

Now his 'act of kindness' has come back to haunt him 13 years later, after he received a letter demanding child support payments.

Mr Langridge has not spoken to the family he helped create since 2004.

He was not named on the birth certificates of the two children, and played no role in their upbringing - but the Child Support Agency insists he has to pay £26 a week to support them.

16 New Post: Drill Baby Drill!: Oil Discovered in Nevada Drillers in Nevada have found what they call “an ocean of oil” in Hot Creek Valley in central Nevada, east of Tonopah. Initial data suggest a pool of 187 million barrels, though billions of barrels may be possible, including pools of light sweet crude, and comes from chainman shale thicker that of Saudi Arabia or Kuwait. With continuously improving detection and drilling technologies, this discovery has the potential to change Nevada for the better. Aside from the tax revenue (that the idiots in Carson City will undoubtedly squander), a truly rich and accessible pool of oil would provide jobs and otherwise help the economy in a way that is exclusive on Nevada’s dependency on gambling. Undoubtedly, oil wealth would be a threat to Sen. Harry Reid. Not only would a highly rich pool of light sweet crude oil mean that there would be a counter to the strength of the Harry Reid political machine, but it would run counter to the disastrous “Renewable Energy” schemes he and Obama have had. This would be an incentive to oppose Harry Reid and his political machine. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=372

Meanwhile, in California:

An Irvine resident is requesting that the city install a sign to memorialize the hundreds of fish killed in a traffic crash in early October as they were being taken to Irvine Ranch Market.

In the letter, Dina Kourda, on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, asks the city's street maintenance superintendent to place the sign at the site of the crash on Walnut and Yale avenues.

Tow rig operators hook up to a truck that overturned Oct. 11 carrying 1,600 pounds of fish. The hundreds of pounds of saltwater fish shut down an Irvine intersection for hours while the mess was cleaned up. The sign would read, "In memory of hundreds of fish who suffered and died at this spot," to remind tractor-trailer drivers of their responsibility to the animals who are "hauled to their deaths every day," according to the letter provided by PETA.

"Although such signs are traditionally reserved for human fatalities, I hope you'll make an exception because of the enormous suffering involved in this case," the letter read.

You know, if the mortal remains of the dearly departed are typically breaded and pan fried, a memorial isn't really necessary....

Muhammad was a brilliant warlord, and a pretty damn good presenter, but not much of an original thinker.

Of course if the Byzantines and Persians hadn't been in a death struggle right when Muhammad united the Arab tribes no one would have heard of Islam besides a few Byzantine historians (though there would be a lot more of them today since the Empire would likely still exist).

125 tid bit for all you electriketdy users.

When your lights flicker, don't think it's necessarily a precursor for yours to go off.

It does happen but think; are there loads that come on all at once in the house when it's cold/windy or rainy especially? the flicker may just be those loads triggering when usually they don't all come on at the same time.

Advice: check how many breakers you have and find out what they service and their normal loads. if one side of the circuit breaker box has higher loads that come on more frequently, you'll have flicker. And it means your house's load is unbalanced.
Not too critical but you should look into an upgrade.

next; when you get that flicker, it could also be that the grid is shifting load from one district to another or rerouting a load.

This can happen for many reasons. In a storm it could be because of increased power usage or it could be someone's house or transformer feed has gone out. This removal of load will cause a rapid imbalance that has to be shifted quickly hence the flicker as this happens.

Finally. Note the next time your power goes out. It used  to be in some places there would be 3 flickers and if the power didn't stabilize the local grid went down. This is an attempt to shift load or compensate for a sudden heavier load (car accident knocking down wires and shorting them) or the absence of the local line transformer causes a shift.

If the imbalance is great enough and it won't stabilize the district is taken out of service to protect the infrastructure.

so, flickers can be your house load, or district load shift.
Repeated flickers close together means some big imbalance has happened. and it happens pretty fast so you miss the other flickers.

And don't forget that water (though technically an insulator) will pass electricity so during a rainstorm, there are higher line losses and that has to be balanced also.

It's done more rapidly these days as they don't use mechanical switches as much or they are phased in better so the flicker is less noticeable during normal times.

You take over a civilization in the historical time it arose and meanwhile, other civs pop up as time progresses. Sometimes you can have Islam start in India before the Arabs found it in the game.

210 mostly 2 and 3, but why not, the rest as I have not heard much over here just north of GR Posted by: Red Shirt at October 29, 2012 10:45 PM The general logic on the Props is Yes, No, No, No, Yes , Yes. I believe the polling supports that logic. My thoughts on the proposals, lifted from an e-mail I sent to a squish acquaintance: Not just "No", but "Hell NO!!!!!eleventy111!!!!" on Prop.Two. I don't think it's any big secret that I'm not a fan of unions in general, and that I have huge issues with tax-payer funded unions. The actual text: This proposal would:  Grant public and private employees the constitutional right to organize and bargain collectively through labor unions.  Invalidate existing or future state or local laws that limit the ability to join unions and bargain collectively, and to negotiate and enforce collective bargaining agreements, including employeesÂ’ financial support of their labor unions. Laws may be enacted to prohibit public employees from striking.  Override state laws that regulate hours and conditions of employment to the extent that those laws conflict with collective bargaining agreements.  Define “employer” as a person or entity employing one or more employees. Should this proposal be approved? "...one or more employees....." means the kid you hire to shovel your drive has a Constitutional right to collective bargaining Absolutely "No" on Prop.Three. They might as well amend the Constitution to require that 25% of the energy is generated by harnessing unicorn farts with an unobtainium reactor. Prop.Four is right out as well. They have a broad definition of "home health-care workers": tending to an infirm family member? You're a health care worker and must join the union. Your sister-in-law pays you $100 per week to watch her kids? You're a health care worker and must join the union. See also my comments on Prop.Two. Definitely vote Yes on Prop.Five; it amends the state Constitution to require a two-thirds majority in both houses, or a popular vote in a general election (the direct voice of the people) for any tax increase or changes to the tax basis (how or what the tax is levied on).

263 "Has anybody heard an ad on Rush about getting your money back from your brokerage for stock losses....heard it for the first time today and was like..wtf was that?" unfortch, your broker has no legal fiduciary responsibility to you, he just has to act according to high commercial standards (i.e., cannot commit fraud). if rush is letting bottom-feeding trial attorneys like that ad on his show, he must really be losing a lot of clout... either way, do you really think it's *fair* for someone to sue his broker for your stock losses? unless the broker engaged in outright fraud, isn't that more like capital-D Democrat behaviour, to take on risks and then demand that someone pay for the losses when the risks don't play out as hoped?

271 Well, speak of the Devil and there he is.

Just had a transient load shift that knocked everything out for about 2 sec.

I think we've got such a good system where I am because of the Gas fired Electric plant about 5 mi away.

As to solid state switchers. I have to assume they have developed something other than mechanical even for very high voltages because mechanical switches are very cumbersome expensive and prone to degradation even when enclosed and surrounded by a non conductive liquid to minimize the arching between contacts during a switchover.

Ganging, series, parallel or something should work to spread the amperage below the break down point of the substrate.

So I'm not SURE but I'd be willing to bet they do. Plus the switching takes place so fast, it has to be solid state.

I've been looking since your question intrigued me but I that's not something that's really available on line unless you know exactly what you're looking for by name or manufacturer.

I've got  to go reset some clocks.

That wasn't the storm ripping a normal facade off. The winds weren't even close to heavy enough to do that sort of damage to a normal building. Just like the crane, it wasn't storm damage, per se, but a problem with the equipment before the storm. Cranes don't get mangled by the winds that Sandy generated. Cranes have fallen in New York without storms.

Someone mentioned the song OHIO last night.

I looked at the lyrics and took a stab at an update (apologies to CSNY):

4 Dead and He DonÂ’t Know

Dead SEALS and Obama Lying,

Abandoned by their own,

This Fall I hear the crying,

Four dead and he donÂ’t know

Gotta get down to it,

Obama let them down,

Narrative failed long ago.

What if you knew them

And found them dead on the ground

How can he lie when you know?

Dead SEALS and Obama Running,

Abandoned by their own,

This Fall I hear the drumming,

Four dead but he donÂ’t know

Gotta get down to it,

Barack let them down,

His Story failed long ago.

What if you knew them

And found them dead on the ground

How can he run when you know?

The electrical reclosers are mechanical switches.  The switches open and close fast enough that there is little time to overheat the contacts.  Usually there are two sets of contacts, primary and arcing.  The primary carry the current, and open first.  The arcing contacts are designed to do just that, arc when opening.  The arcing contacts protect the primary contacts from arc damage.

One advantage of high voltage, is the current is usually low, only hundreds of amps.

You will see the same arrangement in circuit breakers too.  (Air break, vacuum, oil, and SF6 gas circuit breakers)  Except they usually do not reclose when they trip open.

FYI Morons, do not count on the utility power staying off if there are downed wires that do not appear to be live.  The reclosers will RECLOSE and re-energize the lines after they trip open.  The number of times and delays vary from utility to utility.  IF you see downed lines, STAY AWAY!

334 Holy frijole batman. My neighbor down the block must've had something fall and take out his power. No fire but emergency trucks are there.

i thought I heard the sound of heavy arching and a xformer buzz like noise. (once you've heard an overloaded xformer, you never forget it)

I just thought I was imagining things. It must have shorted out his power.

Oh and for you all out there who think that underground lines are the bees knees? WE have underground lines in this area.

See the problem is that the lines eventually come up to the house. sometimes through the basement and sometimes through an above ground wall.

What happened I think was just before it went BZZZZZZ and lights went out there was a sustained gust. (by ear maybe 60mph +++)

that knocked something down onto his main power wires coming in. That's all it took. BZZZZZZ. I'm gonna go look what's up.

352 248 "Desultory" had always been a favorite of mine, as I liked the rhythm and the dynamic of stressing the "sult" syllable, as well as the several aural associations gained thereby.

It's not a "scar" on her soul (which implies a healed old wound), but a suppurating, festering, maggot-writhing gash that is slowly but inexorably eating out her moral substance.

----------------

Probably not a whole lot, unless keeping the polls open late means they find not only more votes in boxes, but more electoral votes to assign to the state. Nearly zero chance the fate of the final result hinges on who wins NY.

You'd have to go into VA or possibly PA to start to consider potential delays having an effect.

Posted by: Mayday at October 29, 2012 08:03 PM (F3s39)

362 @289 Agreed. Looked well over a hundred years old, meaning, lintel (maybe even wood lintel) on brick posts, not a metal frame. That would mean that was the front wall, not a facade. Pre-Louis Sullivan. Layers and layers of brick, from the outside in, slowly absorbing moisture and crumbling. You could get up to five or six "storeys" with that method, if you were brave.

One flaw in the roof drainage, and the whole building begins to separate. I've seen trees growing between the roof deck and the front wall. They often used iron threaded rods, with big end plates, to bind the side walls along the beams, but no such luck for end walls.

Now, you can build an all-new building behind those brick fronts, and keep the nice old look, but you can't make a brickpile permanent unless you pay a lot of attention to internal maintenance. Wrong neighborhood for that.

In the old world, those would burn down often enough to keep them from falling down -- the beams and floors being all wood. Cotton mill operators found out how explosive lint was (the hard way), and their insurance men convinced them to invent "fire-proof" construction, which used plaster or other coatings (eventually, asbestos) to protect the beams from infiltration, and a building would survive a number of minor fires in its life. So a fundamentally unsound load-bearing method was saved from obvious obsolescence, and got to hang around until water or earthquakes could do it in, instead.

If they think they are losing, they WILL seek out and WILL find judges to order the polls to stay open. Make sure that it doesn't matter by voting (Ohioans, Iowans, Nevadans, Coloradans, Wisconsonites, etc.)

Posted by: BILL M at October 30, 2012 12:07 AM (B5XJH)

The Dems already do that in "The Community" during every election. It seems that some precincts need to stay open much later to accommodate voters who can't seemed to be bothered to show up in a 12 to 14 hour time frame to vote, but they seem to be able to get their right as the polls are about to close, so a local judge will say that those precincts can stay open longer, but not the other precincts.

I see two other people have mentioned that Gallup shows Romney with a 52/45 edge in early voting. At 15% of the total expected vote, that should be quite predictive of the final result. At least I hope so anyhow.

But this thought came to mind -- There are now a large number of independent people, bloggers, that are analyzing various polling and voting results. Maybe it will turn out that obvious areas of voter fraud will be more readily caught and dealt with. For example, you have a precinct with 200 registered voters and 300 votes recorded. In the past this was hard to spot and catch, particularly with a little collusion from the election officials in that precinct.

But this stuff is public record, and hard to hide from some local nosy activist. Plus, the soapbox to stand and shout it from is worldwide in scope.

430 They often used iron threaded rods, with big end plates, to bind the side walls along the beams, but no such luck for end walls.

My dad used to own an old industrial revolution era mill building that had the iron rod ties.  He sold it to some assholes (and held the paper) who cut a huge hole in the 2nd story floor so they could hoist shit up there easily.  When they cut the huge hole, they cut those iron ties because they were in the way...

...the assholes stopped paying on the mortgage, I went down and looked at the joint again after dad died, saw what had happened, and walked away and let the city repo the building for the back taxes the assholes didn't bother paying either.  It would have taken me 10 years to unfuck all the electric code violations they'd installed too.

By that time, the side walls had taken on a visible 12" outward bow where the ties had been cut and the building was near collapse.  Amazingly, some imbecile paid about $90k for it at auction.  Even leveled, the lot would only have been worth about $10k.

I got the better part of that deal just abandoning it to taxes.

438 Yeah, I figured having the Byzantines would be like Italy writ large. With their actual resources, if you assume the Byzantines survived as a political unit through the Renaissance into the industrial age, it turns into a huge powerhouse of industry. Vast oil, mineral, and waterway wealth, plus access to warm water ports and the Indian sub-continent during the age of exploration. It was a tough nut to crack - had the output of almost double Germany's. Wiped out the USSR within the first year and invaded China. The AI had units in Brazil before I nuked him. Now silage is where they add grain and the cobs and stalks and mix in something smells sweet maybe molasses and then in the silo, it seems to ferment a bit. Dairy cows like it and it will carry them thru the winter but they still need some roughage so their stomachs work correctly.

Dude, you play Heart of Iron???  I've been playing HOI 2 for a couple of years, almost always as Germany.  I disagree with a handful of generals' stats, but after a few years of experimenting, by mid-1946, all of Europe is Axis except der Sweitz, Benelux (invaded France through Italy), and Sweden.  Annexed the entire USSR, conquered England (fairly easily), all of India, most of Africa, etc.

489 New Post: Nevada Early Vote Update (9th Day of 14) After the 9th day of early voting, the Democrats have a lead of 36K raw votes. Washoe county is trending towards being a wash (pun intended), so only the strong GOP turnout amongst the rural counties will even partially blunt the Democratic raw vote advantage in Clark County of about 46K. After nine day of early voting in 2008, the Democrats had an advantage of 56K. The Democrats raw vote advantage is down 82% in Clark County from 2008, though the total number of votes has increased by about 26%. This results in a 64% reduction in their vote advantage compared to 2008 for early voting. Absentees are coming in at just under 1/6 of the early votes. At this 64% reduction in advantage for the Democrats, their projected early vote lead will be about 70K in Clark County. With Washoe coming in about even, and the rural counties coming in at perhaps 25K in favor of the Republicans, this would result in the Democrats having a raw vote lead of 45K. With an 80% turnout, this would result in a lead for Obama of just under 5%. This is good news for Sen. Dean Heller, who has been polling 4-6% ahead of Auton-American Shelley Berkley (D – Nestene Consiousness), which adds to the positivity previously noted. All of the above assumes that 2012 trends like in 2008 (with Democrat vote advantage shrunk to 64%, and 126% of the voters). http://politicalhat.com/?p=379

So if you could pray she stops bleeding wherever, and that her head would clear and the pain subside, i would be in your debt, as well as Beeb, and the Beeb mom.

496 The GOP has been claiming that the Dems have been pushing out their high propensity voters at a rate that is 50% above the GOP, who are focusing on "marginal" voters. Don't know if that is true or not. My back-of-the-envelope calculations are assuming that, modified as stated for % advantage change, things remain otherwise like in 2008, when the Dems had a similar registration advantage. If the GOP massively increased turnout relative to the Democrats in early voting, or has more voters on election day, things could change, though that hasn't been evident yet... Even if Obama wins, the Senate seat is very much in play, as is NV03, NV04, and the state Senate.

Was going to bed but this is a subject I will soon deal with. Both parents (still married since the 50s) and are now in their 80s. Both are doing well at the moment but there have been a couple scares so far. It has so far always turned out okay but would it have if the people around them didn't care.

I am a big believer that having a purpose to live keeps people alive and everyone that cares, no matter how remote adds to that. So I add my support for that reason. (oh and maybe selfishly that it comes back when I need it.)

512 I think people pretty much understand that you might have to stake a goat at the edge of  a village to catch a tiger. That's part of the solemn responsibility of being President -- to put people in harm's way.

But when the goat is attacked and starts screaming for seven hours, during which you have an hour chat with Bibi Netanyahu, and the goat and the tiger are on monitors in real time all around your house, then you go to bed early so you can look good in Vegas the next day, all the while you are telling the riflemen to stand down -- well, choomly.....you're going to lose the ASPCA endorsement.

And when you have your staff go to the cameras a couple of days later and say, "I didn't stake that goat -- the tiger was enraged because some other guys in the village were having a barbecue or making a video or something....." -- well, then, you're going to lose anyone who doesn't appreciate being treated like an idiot.

545 There are only five freedoms in the First Amendment if you count the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause as one (Freedom of Religion).  Excluding the Establishment Clause is particularly offensive because it has been used with great prejudice against Christians.  However, leaving it out is trying to bs a bs'er, because the Supreme Court has never treated them as the same. One prevents the gov't from favoring one religion over the others, while the second allows everyone to practice their religion.

The SIX liberties in the First Amendment are:
The Establishment Clause
The Free Exercise of Religion
The Freedom Speech
The Freedom of the Press
The Freedom to Assemble
The Freedom to Petition
