Threesomes Are The New Couple

So Brazil is now registering 3-person civil unions:

A public notary in Brazil has registered a three-person partnership as a legally recognized civil union. Brazilians are waiting to see how other public officials treat the notary's action.

The notary, Claudia do Nascimento Domingues, who serves the city of Tupa, "said the move reflected the fact that the idea of a 'family' had changed. 'We are only recognising what has always existed. We are not inventing anything. For better or worse, it doesn't matter, but what we considered a family before isn't necessarily what we would consider a family today'."

And there are already 3-parent baby fertility treatments out there:

A fertility treatment which eliminates hereditary disease by engineering babies to carry healthy DNA from a third biological parent could be legalised next year.

Three is the future, baby - and my other baby!

Woo Hoo: Foreign Investment in the US Surging

Why? Because for all of our problems which we continually beat ourselves up over - the rest of the world is still far more fucked up than we are. And their issues tend to be fundamental social ones that no one there is willing to talk about.

Of all the major economies in the world, the U.S. is doing the least poorly. Europe faces a colossal self-created currency disaster, Russia sees its energy-profits wither as the U.S. energy revolution unfolds, Brazil is still the perpetual country of the future, and both China and Japan have massive problems lurking beneath the surface as a trade war looms. For now, the U.S. will remain a relative beacon of stability and profit-and foreign investors recognize this.

So we have that going for us.

More on the Obama 'Phone Lady'

Well Elspeth Reeve doubled down on her claims that showing video of the phone lady is racist:

The point of the video - and the reason Drudge and Limbaugh hyped it - is to say, this is what Obama voters look like: black, poor, stupid, and after your money. The video's subject wasn't picked out because she "happens to be black," she was picked out because she is black. Lee Atwater, strategist for Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, explained how this works way back in 1981 - better to talk about cutting taxes and bussing, because it's "a hell of a lot more abstract than 'Ni***r, ni***r.'" Of course, this Internet meme isn't all that abstract.

And Ann Althouse had one of her typical PC snits over the video which is why I suppose she is currently 'undecided' between Romney and Obama. She may have some conservative-ish opinions but her prejudices are straight orthodox liberal. In her heart she seems to be convinced that even reasonable and decent conservatives are all secret racists.

Feeling All Nervous and Stressed Out?

Then let Bob Ross feeding a baby squirrel sooth you.

Holocaust Remembrance Tattoos?

Perhaps well intentioned but generally a bad idea.

The 10 tattooed descendants interviewed for this article echoed one another's motivations: they wanted to be intimately, eternally bonded to their survivor-relative. And they wanted to live the mantra "Never forget" with something that would constantly provoke questions and conversation.

And Neo-neocon does not approve:

It seems repellent and almost ghoulish, a form of histrionic appropriation of another's suffering (and also a violation of the Jewish prohibition on tattooing the body), although on reading the entire article I could also see it as a form of love, and a desire to not let the world forget. But the world will forget-in fact, a great deal of the world has already forgotten, or never was outraged by the Holocaust in the first place.

Ultimately memories live on through people and the stories they tell - not ink on their skin.

(barring certain extreme situations such as the movie, Memento)

Introducing the Tactical Revolver Shotgun

Yeah it's impractical and probably heavier than an auto - but it does look pretty cool.

How To Turn Your Spare Pennies into a Nice Ring

As a kid I used to melt pennies - the copper-shelled zinc ones - all the time on the kitchen stove. With just another tool or two I could have been smelting my own jewelry. Or bullets and blades.

Two things I'd like to hear Romney say...

Mr. President, we won WWII in four years....

and

Mr President, you said you'd cut the deficit in half, and have lower unemployment when you ran for office.... well, if 'I' don't keep my campaign promises?  Feel free to vote for someone else in four years...

The difference between Mitt and Barry (and John McCain too) is that Mitt started out working hard in college, and has worked hard all his life.  He is a born over-achiever, and had to work hard and be smart to be successful. For years.

Obama has had a lot of things handed to him as an equal -opportunity hire, and been promoted because of his race.  He might be smart, but his intellect is flaccid.

McCain was a terrible student at the Naval Academy. He graduated near the bottom of his class.  He is not stupid, but he has never been a disciplined intellect, much like many politicians.

Close but still room for a total meltdown. Obama couldn't look at Romney for more than a second or two so he looked down at his notes, grimacing when Romney was making solid hits. Romney addressed Obama with a majority of his arguments right to his face, and the remainder was towards the moderator.

You really only need to see the first 15min or so to see the Medicare segment. Romney went through his plan and Obama started with Medicare, switched to paying for college and teachers. All over the map within one minute. Lots of 'uh, uh, uh' s as well.

317 Holocaust Remembrance Tattoos? Perhaps well intentioned but generally a bad idea. I commented on this over at neo's. Nothing well-intentioned about this. It's depraved, silly, un-jewish and repulsive. Any Jewish kid who pulls this crap is a sick, sick puppy. I noted that most of these tatooed idiots probably don't even know what the "refuseniks" were and that wearing bracelets for some remembrance just wasn't edgy enough or anti-jewish enough for them. This idea is for no one but truly sick, despicable people who I wouldn't even allow in my house.

413 Chique, I did watch it. But I'm the kind that actually reads legislation, so debates seem rather content free and often contain too much interpretive history. I wasn't really "wowwed" by either tonight. Romney had more and better one-liners, so I guess that's a win.

454 Unlike gay marriage, polygamy is a variant on marriage with a long tradition. Hell look at both Obama and Romney's families...

Monogamy has a large number of benefits to confer on a society, but with gay marriage, western societies have already decided that one cannot place such restrictions on individuals no matter the cost it may incur on society as a whole.

I would expect in the near future marriage will be a hell of a lot rarer, but there will be a not insignificant number of men defined as high value in society with multiple wives.

The high value men won't marry because they won't have to marry.  Women won't marry because they would rather be girlfriend to a high value man and share him than be in a monogamous relationship with a lower value schmuck when there is no legal benefit for the latter.

Polygamy is a barbaric practice on par with female genital mutilation and one that ultimately leads to harm for women in the long run.

491 Watch for him to try to regain general credibility after his long run of crap.
--

I'm getting way ahead of things, but here's something I've been thinking could happen, assuming Romney wins.  To do that obviously a lot of former O voters will vote for him.  Romney tonight displayed a Reaganesque confidence and a happy demeanor which signals things are going to get better, have hope.  So many people are sick of the the economy and the divisiveness and O's general suckitude that they're ready to make a break with the Dems, who have become unrecognizable.

So some in the media and Hollywood jump to the winning side, especially if/when the economy improves. They'll want to pretend like the O years didn't happen and that they had nothing to do with it.  The Dem party is in shambles, old, dried up, stinky with failure.  The GOP's in congress will be giddy and welcome all with open arms.  We'll be pretty happy that a majority of the country has finally waken up.

But.  If the media and some Hollywood types decide that working within the GOP party is the new It thing, they'll naturally try to influence it, and there's a risk the GOP becomes (even more) liberalized from within.  As I said, I'm way ahead of myself, but that's how I think things could play out.  Crazy idea?

Exactly.  Reid and Pelosi are ready to be pickled.  They have no bench depth. No rock stars for the left to get behind.  The GOP has tons of fresh new faces, smart people, and a virtual rainbow.  That's why i think some (not all) of the media and Hollywood will, over the next 2-3 years, invade the GOP party and work to influence it from within.  Kind of like when CA people move to red states and bring their loony ideas with them.

498 But tonight I'm happy and energized.  Watched some MSLSD for probably the second time ever and they were surprisingly honest about how things went tonight.  I think down deep they know Obama's a loser, simply not up to the task and defending him has got to get old.

I wonder if tonight's debate will be a wake up call for some of the MSM.  It might start to dawn on the dimmer members that O really isn't all that and a box of chocolates.  The smarter ones are more evil and know why they've been propping them up, but some of the useful idiots might be stunned out of their stupor by O's performance tonight.  The ones who really have believed he's a genius, articulate, most smartest guy in all the lands.  The emperor has been shown to be buck naked.

502 western societies have already decided that one cannot place such restrictions on individuals no matter the cost it may incur on society as a whole.
Its one of those ways civilizations commit suicide. Once a culture truly becomes comfortable, prosperous, and safe, it becomes self destructive and begins to systematically abandon all the things that got them to that point as old, useless, and restrictive.
Inevitably, it all falls apart, and the people who led that charge are the first victims of the chaos that follows.

First name off the top of my head, former Tennessee governor Phil Bredesen. Was very popular during his time. Don't know if he has any aspirations, though.

He's probably too conservative (for a Democrat) to get the nomination... Plus he was against Obamacare.  (I lived in TN for 30 years and suffered through TennCare.  Bredesen was in the health insurance biz and knew what a screwed-up deal Obamacare would be.)

Do not lay laminate in halls. Just don't. Really. Nearly killed me.

If you're contemplating treated concrete as an option, thinner laminate than Pergo is an option -- just think of the paint as a sub-millimeter laminate with no underlayment. That's not to say that thicker laminates aren't better.....

Looked like it was a nice water garden with sunken tubs in the foreground. We have all sorts of odd water things in our garden (we moved about 400 gallons of tropical fish to this house in '97 by transferring them to agricultural vats while the tanks got moved.....then put the ag vats in the garden as waterlily ponds).

But we joke about maintaining a proper level of swampiness, and have dragonflies rattling their wings at us. We josh people that we keep a swamp in the backyard so that we can model what's going on in Sacramento, and go on riffs about high-speed model trains to nowhere and such.

I lost this argument in my own home, but I'll make it here. Go for a wide plate of hardwood, mill it to the proper height to sit on top of each side, give it an easy stain, and about 7 coats of poly. Looks great, wears great, the heights aren't terribly obvious.......

you won't even notice a 1/4" height difference, and higher than that you get used to right away.   put the difference right under the door.

check out a carpet to linoleum threshold some time.  the height that is simply ignored by people is pretty impressive.

I ended up custom-milling my thresholds with a router table. Most were from 3/4" lumber, rounded over left and right, then undercut for the appropriate floor heights. You can undercut one side by 1/4 and the other by 1/2 and nobody will say boo. My biggest drop was onto tile, and I chamfered a 45-degree slope to drop onto the tile.....no problemo.
