10 Interesting bit from Razib at Gene Expression - Humans are at least 8% virus. How? We constantly have viruses in our body. Retroviruses infect cells and insert their virus genes into the cell DNA. Sometimes the cell the virus infects is an egg cell. And sometimes that egg cell gets fertilized and -- boom -- the new baby grows up with the virus genes as just a normal part of its DNA. This has happened enough that at least 8% of "human" DNA is actually virus DNA that hitched a ride.

Edited for brevity, taken from 2.0 Blogmocracy.

Hat Tip 2.0 Blogmocracy

So, you might ask, just exactly how could it get any worse than a President ordering the American Military to stand down and simply watch in real time as American citizens are killed and tortured, all occurring as our embassies fall due to some mighty icy political calculus? As it turns out, it looks like not only was a stand down order issued, in three separate iterations, but when a Three Star General in the field took it upon himself to take the action possible to save our citizens, he was summarily relieved of his command.

General Ham immediately had a rapid response unit ready and communicated to the Pentagon that he had a unit ready.
...
General Ham then received the order to stand down. His response was to screw it, he was going to help anyhow. Within 30 seconds to a minute after making the move to respond, his second in command apprehended General Ham and told him that he was now relieved of his command.

So, just so we are all on the same page, not only did Barack Obama not do anything to help the victims of his foreign policy, he countermanded directives for increased security issued by Hillary Clinton. If that wasn’t bad enough, he told people who were volunteering to help, “to stand down.” If that wasn’t bad enough, he fired a Three Star General who did attempt to do something to help the situation, before that help could materialize.

"The Battle Hymn of the Republic" sung by those darn Mormons.

Sometimes when I'm feeling down, I dial that up on You Tube.  It always picks me up, even though it sometimes makes my eyes go a little misty.

When they sang it at the end of the Memorial Service a few days after Sept 11, 2001,  it was the first time I really felt the impact of what had happened.  It sorta felt like my insides had collapsed, knowing that now we were going to be at war.

And regardless of what President Gutsy Call and his sidekick Plugs Biden think, this war  with Al Qaeda and their sympathizers is a long way from over.

There was a school that catered to the severely mentally handicapped, and one way they motivated their students was by giving them treats.  One day the music teacher decided to take the best singers in the school and form a choir, and in order to motivate the children to sign up, she offered them Coca Cola and cookies after each successful class.  Well, this went on for about 2 months, and suddenly parents began to complain.  Seems their children were putting on a fair amount of weight.  Well, the choir teacher was making great progress and did not want to see the kids stop coming, so she decided to make the snacks a little healthier.  She began to give them cans of Tab and slices of apples.  This worked very well, the choir became very good, the students lost all the weight they put on, and everyone was happy.  So successful was the choir program that they decided to put on a performance for the parents.  Only problem was, they needed a name to put on the posters and ads for the program.  Finally they selected the perfect name...

"The Moron Tab and Apple Choir".

GWB was so proud of the US and he was tapping his feet to the songs we played for the Pope, it was both awe and pride that GWB showed that day. It was a beautiful moment. A friend of mine sent me a link to a bunch of school kids, middle school kids. playing that song. It is the most beautiful version I have ever heard. I don't think the link is live now but if it was, I think I would be breaking copyright laws. I tried emailing the man, it was put on the web by someone who used the the name Great Dane Pro. 94 Already voted in Arizona. Love early voting. Republicans across the board of course. Trent Franks Congressman. Voted Against all tax increases and budget increases. (High Schools don't need fucking Blu-Ray players in every classroom btw) I voted against the judges appointed by Democrats (even though they'll still be retained by 90+%)
I'm confident about Romney. I never believed the hysteria about "this is the WORST run campaign in the history of mankind" bullshit that a lot of conservatives were putting forward when Obama was burning through his cash during the summer and Romney was hoarding his. Sandy won't make a difference other than giving Democrats in Northern Virginia and the Philadelphia metro area an excuse to stay home.

However, I am quite worried about how Republicans seem to have cocked-up their Senate chances beginning in 2010. We're going to lose in Maine (barring a split in the leftist vote which is possible), the polls out of Massachusettes look bad. So we now need to take 5 seats to get to 50 + (Paul Ryan). Without the Senate Obamacare stands. With the Senate 85% of it can be removed with a simple majority. Various other pieces can be tossed out by courts like forcing Catholic hospitals to pay for murder pills.
Where do we get the 5 or 6 seats?

145 Nevada Early Vote Update (10th Day of 14) Biggest news: The Democrats raw voter lead actually shrunk yesterday. After the 10th day of early voting, the Democrats have a lead of 34K raw votes, which was 36K less than it was the previous day. Washoe county continues to trend towards being a wash (pun intended), so only the strong GOP turnout amongst the rural counties will even partially blunt the Democratic raw vote advantage in Clark County of about 47K. After ten day of early voting in 2008, the Democrats had an advantage of 61K. The Democrats raw vote advantage is down 79% in Clark County from 2008, though the total number of votes has increased by about 40%. This results in a 56% reduction in their vote advantage compared to 2008 for early voting. Absentees are coming in at just under 1/5 of the early votes. At this 56% reduction in advantage for the Democrats, their projected early vote lead will be about 62K in Clark County. With Washoe coming in about even, and the rural counties coming in at perhaps 25K in favor of the Republicans total, this would result in the Democrats having a raw vote lead of 40K. With an 80% turnout, this would result in a lead for Obama of just over 4%. This is good news for Sen. Dean Heller, who has been polling 4-6% ahead of Auton-American Shelley Berkley (D – Nestene Consiousness). All of the above assumes that 2012 trends like in 2008 (with Democrat vote advantage shrunk to 56%, and 140% of the early voters). More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=402

This needs to come out now, Newt. Perhaps on Thursday, after his preznit lap in NJ to comfort. While presidents do this, you know dang well this is going to require some massive security. I am surprised Christie is allowing this, when Bloomberg said thanks but not now? Huh. And in Colorado last summer, during the wildfires, they basically told him they had no security to spare. 167 I hope that these actions during the incident in Benghazi and any reputed actions by those in high command puts to rest the idea that American Soldiers won't fire or attack American citizens in revolt if so ordered by the proper authority.

It is ground into all officers and those who are suspected of harboring contrary views are weeded out over the years.

They have their chain of command and protocols for the removal of officers that disobey the proper authorities.

anyone who thinks otherwise are daydreaming.

This is in reference to the rumors (which seem to be conceivable) about Gen. Ham attempting a rescue and being relieved of his command by his 2nd. (see drudge)

Whether this actually took place or not, it is an example of exactly the sort of circumstance that the military is prepared for.

170 The fact that Obama was polling at 54/55 in Michigan in 2008 at this time and is now ~7% lower in 2012 tells you that lots and lots of O. states should be in reach for Romney.

Team R. should just take a shotgun full of advertising and fire it generally in the direction of the Midwest over and over and over again.

173 Newt, on Greta, just now:

Two networks have emails from the NSC directly to military telling them to stand down in real time on Benghazi.

The problem is that Democrats hate the AC-130. Bill Clinton refused to send them to Mogadishu, and then there's this, about the shooting down of the helicopter carrying members of DEVGRU after the bin Laden killing:

These were the conditions into which Extortion 17 flew. While they were flying under the escort of two AH-64D Apache helicopters and an AC-130 gunship, because of the rules of engagement and the possibility that there were friendlies in the area, the escorts were not allowed to lay down assault fire around the landing zone.

As Extortion 17 was on its final approach to the landing zone, a Taliban crew appeared on top of a two-story qalat (a mud brick house) and fired off at least two RPGs at the helicopter. The second RPG struck near the back rotor of the Chinook, causing the crash.

Amazingly, because of the rules of engagement and the inability to determine whether there were any friendlies in the area, the Taliban team that shot Extortion 17 down was allowed to escape. The only fire from the escort craft noted in the CENTCOM report occurred several minutes after the crash to suppress any enemy attempting to approach the crash area.

That the Taliban team who killed their son was allowed to leave the scene unmolested after causing the greatest loss of life in Afghanistan since 2001 infuriates the Vaughns...

The CENTCOM report indicates that the Task Force Commander declined to strike the Taliban targets with the Apaches or the AC-130 gunship because they couldnÂ’t confirm whether the group of Taliban they were following were carrying weapons.

183 So there's this neighborhood pizza place close to my house, and it's that kind of a night so I call to pick one up....and run into eighteen gazillion police cars and blocked streets between here and there. Evidently, someone robbed a bank in San Jose, and was tailed by police to some apartment complexes a few blocks away, and they've got the block sealed off and are looking for the guy -- and have been for 3-1/2 hours.

Further, the young couple running the pizza place were doing their laundry at the laundromat next to the apartment where they guy was holed up and were being cleared to leave while the police were using a bullhorn to tell "Sam" to answer his phone.

But there's nothing on the news.

I mean, there's someone armed and dangerous with a police standoff just two blocks from my house....and I get bupkis. Instead, some blithering ninnies are talking about how great the economy is doing.

And they wonder why people don't respect journalists.

195 I hope that these actions during the incident in Benghazi and any reputed actions by those in high command puts to rest the idea that American Soldiers won't fire or attack American citizens in revolt if so ordered by the proper authority.

That's quite a leap you're making. You're saying that because an AC-130 was ordered to not fire and two special-operations units were not allowed to make a rescue, that means our troops will fire on American citizens.

Lots of things make you think that American troops will fire on American citizens, don't they?

Let's make little wager: I'll bet you $10,000 that in our lifetimes there will never be an occasion in which the U.S. military is deployed en masse to quell a revolt by American citizens; there will not be a revolt by American citizens; and the U.S. military will not fire on American citizens.

Breezy Point has had its share of tragedies. That's where AA flight 587 fell on some houses, and it lost a good share of its residents to the 9-11 attacks

It was a heartbreaker, watching your home and your neighbors homes burning away and the fire dept can't reach you.

Thankfully no lives were lost.

255 I'm reading a local Michigan poll online--which shows Mitt within 2.7!--and this caught my eye:

> Romney leads Oakland County by 8.9 percent and Macomb County by 16 percent. Obama is up by 15.7 percent in Wayne County. That number does not include the city of Detroit where Obama owns nearly all votes.

Hmm.

Does that mean they didn't survey Detroit?

(I like the verb "owns" there, by the way.)

But what I started thinking was, can you get an actual poll of Detroit anymore? And are they able to hold an election at all?

I mean, I know from past elections that Wayne County is absurd. It comes in late with a big enough Democratic margin to swamp the rest of the state. (I think the margin for Wayne County in 2000 may have been greater for Al Gore than his *nationwide* margin of victory. Been a long time, and it might have been Wayne County, Michigan margin + Broward County, Florida margin > Gore nationwide victory margin. Too lazy to look it up.)

That was all 12 years ago before Detroit started shutting off lights, police, fire, and other services to swathes of the city. So my question is, do they just make up the election results now? If you don't have any law and order, how can they possibly hold a real election? You know Democrats are going to count those Wayne County "votes" somehow.

In 2010, Wayne County had a population of 1.8 million. In 2008 about 825,000 votes were cast for President, or about 46 percent of the entire population voted. By comparison, 42 percent of the entire US population voted. Despite the social breakdown, therefore, Wayne County managed a better turnout than the US as a whole.

292 As a former public school music teacher (and incredibly conservative - been in the trenches and seen the insanity) - I've got to give props to the man who actually arranged the vocals on that version of Battle Hymn that the MTC sings. His name - Peter Wilhousky, an American-born composer of Russian/Ukrainian heritage. Those vocals are the simply incredible and after years of hearing and performing a ton of choral works - that arrangement is still almost otherworldly in its power. It gives old retired music teachers the chills to this day! And I had not even thought of the Tabernacle Choir singing this if Mitt got elected. What an absolutely spine-chilling, incredible idea!! Make. It. So.

311 I've only been without power for half a day or so. It would suck because I do all my writing on my laptop and the batteries are basically worthless on it so I'd be without a computer in a matter of an hour or less.
Another favorite hymn "The Church's One Foundation" The last three stanzas on the state of the church on earth ring powerfully for me:
Though with a scornful wonder we see her sore oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.
Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore; till, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.
Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

Those old hymn writers weren't afraid to talk about the bad as well as the good, and their focus was always on God rather than how I feel about God.

Every morning, she gets e-mails from friends who’ve been just as sleepless. Most are so tense, they can croak out only a few words. “Very anxious.” “Worried.”

317 We lost power for threedays when we lived in WI. There were 4 houses at the end of a shared 1/4 mile graval Road. We didn't know each other very well. when we lost power I had a generator. Our wells all had electric pumps. Any way, the neighbors shared there gasoline and one had a gas grill, the other had a boat load of Ice etc. We all had little kids too. We had a Baby. Those three days, as miserable as they were, were so much fun. Those are some of the only people that I stay in contact with that are not family.

Well this is only the beginning of the Winter season.

We have no idea what sort of other storms could be hitting us.

So...my fellow morons, I highly recommend the 'Candle in a Tin Can' thing for warmth.

You can use a small can with a candle in it, to warm your hands.

You can position several larger cans with bigger candles in them, around in a room...and it will raise the temp, and take the chill off.

It's a cheap, easy prep for emergencies...that anyone can afford.

But you have to remember to do it, before the power goes out.

Candles sell out pretty quick.

324 322 haven't seen it but I'd bet they were referring to the optics of the situation. Uniformed non-partisan independents would move to O for "looking like a leader" even though there's nothing much any president can do in this situation but look like he's doing something. Thought being that If nothing else along the way moved them, this would in his favor.

Saw that.

They keep saying that...that Romney should be hounding Barky over Benghazi.

Other libs on Fox have said this too.

I dunno.

They're Dems...it could easily blow up in Romney's face.

Because then, there would of course be the response that "Romney is politicizing the Benghazi tragedy".

Which is messed up...because the whole Benghazi tragedy was caused by politics.

Barky's politics.

Does anyone find "Happy Halloween" inappropriate? I find it analogous to "Have a fun Good Friday." It's supposed to be, well, unsettling.

For sheer firepower in a hymn, it's hard to beat Old Hundredth, the Doxology. Known in our country as "Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow," although there's a filthy monarchist version Over There, "All creatures of our God and King." We don't much hold with that.

Giving out money is what Obama does well, but having been through Hurricane Irene AT THE TIME with people who were suffering. hearing that big daddy government was going to help you out didn't mean much when all your stuff is ruined and you are standing in three feet of water.

400 Meant NJ almost always goes BLUE.

401 Posted by: FenelonSpoke at October 31, 2012 06:22 AM (XSFXq) It's not a question of what will, or won't, help Barky. It's a question of judgment, decency, and an understanding of what is truly important. Christie failed on all three accounts. He sickens me. Now, he's joking about moving Halloween to election day ... but he "doesn't care about politics". I never liked Christie but now I actively despise him.

402 Well most of the towns around here are actively discouraging Trick or Treating today. Too many downed trees and wires. I understand how people don't like Christie. He's better than Democrats we could have as Governor. However, if Obama showed up near me I'd feel like kicking his backside. Who needs protection for Obama on top of storm cleanup? Christie should have been like Bloomberg and told Obama to stay out.

Like I said yesterday, Christie is going overboard with Obama, doesn't surprise me he's always been about Christie, he always thinks he's right and loves to hear the sound of his own voice. He didn't have to do this 1 week before the election, he could have said thank you for the money and been respectful. What the point of the photo op in Jersey with the President, how does that even help N.J. ?

404 Is anyone else wondering why things are so calm in NYC and NJ after the storm?

_____________
Perhaps when things aren't back to normal immediately, even with a black POTUS, things will change. There has been some looting in NYC already and arrests, but little reporting of it. I genuinely wonder if when Obama loses, what will happen if they, or anyone else needs his action? I guess he will do NOTHING out of spite.

405 It doesn't help NJ and all but Obamabots will see that. The guy over at the wyblog (NJ blog) says the creeps in Chicago are giddy about the storm: You want to know just how sick the Obama people are on the storm issue? It's party hats and cake over in Chicago. High f-cking fives for them. Heard LaBolt is telling them all "We're gonna shove this storm right up Romney's ass." They already got scripts out to their media support. Gonna hammer the governor on earlier statements he made about the role of the federal government, FEMA, take things out of context and try and paint him as some uncaring assh-le at a time when the Romney campaign is limited in its ability to respond due to the temporary downtime during the recovery from the storm. Media is already pushing the governor on it right now. That means these scripts, the plan, went out yesterday while the storm was hitting. They were prepping this thing to turn it into something politically useful to Obama as people were dying. Classy. "We're gonna shove this storm right up Romney's ass

406 I was thinking last night that minds are already made up one way of the other. It wouldn't matter if angels started showing up saying "Give him another four years." He's done. People are fed up with his shit. Done.

Good morning.

407 If Obama loses he'll do A LOT of things out of spite, It called "narcissistic rage" to get back at people for not appreciating him enough, the sick creep.

The people who shake his hand will be comforted, I guess. But the millions without power, standing in water and picking out the remains of their belongings while calling insurance agents won't see it or care. The parents with hungry and cold children won't see his photo shop or care.

Many presidents wait until the initial crisis is controlled to visit an area. Not this guy, whose campaign is running on fumes.

Sorry for what you have been through FenelonSpoke. I have had to evacuate many times, but have always come back to a dry and intact home. I know many who are not so lucky.
