A Fascinating Interview with Nolan Bushnell
Nolan Bushnell is most famous for founding Atari and creating the entire video game industry in the 70's and starting the Chuck E Cheese pizza chain in the 80's. These days he's now focusing on micro-games and software to improve learning. This may not sound so exciting but then this is Bushnell we're talking about.
Bushnell is also famous for hiring a local kid - Steve Jobs - despite his lack of a college degree or any formal training in electronics. Later Jobs brought in his friend, Steve Wozniak, as consultant on the Atari video game, Breakout. Jobs always admired Bushnell and considered him a mentor in business and in life. Watch this video and you can begin to see why Jobs was so impressed with him.
It's a long interview but well worth it to hear Bushnell discuss the connection between video games and learning, the importance of 'flow', why college loans are slavery, how welfare is a poison to the soul, the Arab Spring, the existence of God, as well as how to protect your privacy on Facebook and Twitter. I think I now know where Dos Equis got the idea for their ad campaign.
If you're in a hurry and don't care about Atari history, jump to 18:00 where it really starts getting good.
During the memorial service for Libyan ambassador, Chris Stevens, Obama said this:
Chris Stevens loved his work. He took pride in the country he served, and he saw dignity in the people that he met.
Two weeks ago, he traveled to Benghazi to review plans to establish a new cultural center.
And Mark Steyn points out how wrong this was and how it fails the classic test for aspiring diplomats:
What does that phrase "the country he served" mean? The country Ambassador Stevens was supposed to be serving was the United States, just as Libyan diplomats in Washington are supposed to serve the national interest of Libya. Yet in the context of his surrounding remarks (which are all about the place he was posted to: Chris "crafted a vision for the future", "supported the birth of a new democracy", etc) the President appears to give the impression that he thinks "the country he served" was Libya.
This would seem to be a failure, at the very top, of the old George Schultz test.
But how about a nod to the man who predicted tonight's outcome well over a month ago, in Tampa, with a speech and prop that were widely derided at the time by the chattering class. We refer, of course, to Clint Eastwood and that famous empty chair. Well, that empty chair (and empty brain at the other end) were on full display in Denver tonight.
Do you use : ) or :-) as a smiley? Well one marks you as a young punk and the other as an old fogey:
But emoticons with noses cluster separately from variants without noses. So one cluster includes : ) ; ) : D and = D and another contains :-) :- D) ;-) and :-P. Emoticons with noses are historically older. Since it is words that unite and distinguish clusters, this means that people who use old-fashion noses also use a different vocabulary-nose users don't mention Bieber or omg.
Could Japanese Troops Protect the Senkaku Islands?
Probably not at the moment which is why Japan is scrambling to get up to speed in amphibious warfare in case they have to retake the islands from a Chinese force.
As China steps up its activities in the waters of East Asia, the Japanese military is building up its capabilities for defending remote islands. That's why 40 troops from the Ground Self Defense Force have been on Guam and nearby islands in the past few weeks, receiving training from U.S. Marines on amphibious war tactics.
In a worst-case scenario - highly unlikely at this point - where Japanese troops actually have to defend an island, how would they do? During our recent trip to Guam, JRT posed the question to some real pros from Japan and the U.S. Their conclusion: GSDF troops are well-trained, professional soldiers, but when it comes to specific skills required for landing on and defending an island, they still need training.
A WSJ interview with Count Anton Wolfgang von Faber-Castell, famous for his pencils, where he points out the marvel of modern pencils and answers such questions as where does "Mongol" come from on the pencil label, how we ended up with hexagonal and now triangular pencils, and what is best pencil in the world.
An Interview with Ms Hannah Minx
From 2010 so it's a younger, less worldly yet minxier H. Minx. Also sadly it's with the execrable Cenk Uygur but he's less obnoxious than usual here.
Yahoo group. That is all.

So 100K more jobs, is 50K more in the Red...
And even if they torture the stats to be less than 8%, which they probably will... the Electorate can smell bullshit if you pile it on deep enough.

The Okinawans don't really consider themselves Japanese, and considering how poorly the mainlanders have historically treated them, it's easy to understand why.
The US has a bigger footprint in Oki than in the mainland comparatively so the Okinawans just don't want the US there at all, consequences be damned.

From Mætenloch's text: "....the connection between video games and learning"
It makes sense that there would be a connection.
I've heard/read that the idea of 'First Person Shooter' type games, was originally put out for bid, for training for our military...
And that the ones which didn't get the bid...ended up out on the market.
But video makers now swear, that there is no connection between the school shooters...who've played hours and hours of first-person-shooter games...and the way that these kids seemed to have a detachment towards their real life targets.
The difference is, that in a military application...the trainees have someone giving them guidance about 'Who is the enemy'.
But the kids sitting alone in their rooms...have no one like that.

"Could Japanese Troops Protect the Senkaku Islands?"
In this context, it's not about the troops. It's about the navy behind them.
Consider an example in a context from the other side of the world. The UK's soldiers and marines, as individually good as they are, would never have been able to retake the Falklands if it had not been for the Royal Navy. (Note that the current RN would have a hard time repeating their 1982 performance. They have been horribly decapitalized.)
The Japanese navy are pretty damned good in a technical sense. Their surface warfare community have our Aegis radars and computers. Their submarines are some of the stealthiest in the world.
It's impossible to tell how a force that's been under peacetime conditions for decades will perform in real combat. Sometimes it's a disaster, sometimes it's a triumph. No one knows precisely why. But the Japanese at least have what they need in terms of weaponry to meet an overt "hard" military challenge, should China mount one.
More worrisome by far should be China's "soft" sallies, such as cutting off the supply of technologically critical rare earth minerals to Japanese industrial businesses.

Up until recently, and even still to an extent in Europe, the word liberal meant the opposite of what it does today.
Liberal: Minimal government, socially conservative society enmeshed with a pluralistic religious tradition.
Conservative: Corporatist state with an aristocrat society on top of a largely illusionary democratic apparatus, socially conservative government tied to a state church.
Socialist: Totalitarian state with illusionary representative government. Religion banished.
Modern conservativism and libertarianism evolved from earlier, classical liberalism. One can see this clearly by looking at American politics prior to the Progressives.
Modern liberalism is a synthesis of the previous conservatives and socialists. One can see the birth of this horror in Bismark's Germany creating the first modern welfare state.
Basically, the autocrats were perfectly willing to buy of the lower classes, and give up on religion, to hold on to power...

Or this: http://tinyurl.com/9bjojsn
Embattled former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright provided matchmaking and “counseling” services for career-conscious gay black men at Trinity – including Barack Obama.
ThereÂ’s also been widespread suspicion around the murders of homosexual men with whom Obama was acquainted and may have had relationships. In a column on Sept. 14, Chicago journalist Kevin Dujan cited two Chicago area sources from diplomatic circles who claimed that Ambassador Stevens was homosexual as well.
So there’s a Chicago connection there. We also know that Obama lived more or less the bachelor’s life in Washington D.C. – where Stevens was also working – from 2005 to 2008, commuting between Chicago and D.C. while Michelle and the girls remained home. Would it be outside the realm of possibility to postulate that either there had been a relationship between the closeted gay Senator and the gay diplomat (who later wound up working for the former), or that said diplomat was simply more well-apprised of the Senator’s sexual proclivities than the rest of us?
Obama, knowing of the imminent unrest in the Middle East, capitalized on this in order to carry out a hit on the intentionally ill-protected diplomat. Did Stevens know something that someone preferred he carry to his grave without disclosing? Did it involve embarrassing personal matters, or other chicanery performed in his official capacity?
To the average network news viewer, unaware of the odious worldview and extreme treachery of which this party is capable, all of this will appear preposterous – as preposterous as Obama being a dedicated Marxist and Islamist sympathizer who wishes to punish America for its centuries of living off the backs of “the workers” and the little brown people of the world.

I'm rewatching the debate because I saw it in bits and pieces last night. At the beginning when O starts out wishing Mooch happy anniversary, we won't be celebrating next year in front of 40k people, etc, he does not smile. Does not crack a smile at all. Try to sincerely wish your spouse a happy anniversary without a hint of a smile or a gleam in your eye. I backed up and watched twice, thinking I must've missed something.
Barry goes on blabbing, answering the "jobs" question by not answering it at all. (invest in teachers, wtf, doesn't he know "jobs" means outside of gov't?) Oops, digressing, let me get back to the good part.
So Romney begins to talk and addresses the fact that it's O's anniversary. Says he's sure Obama is happy to be spending it up there (stage) with him. Romney laughs and O looks right at him and grins and laughs, that big huge moneymaker smile of his. Not the fake pissed smile we see later (this is before R has laid into him), a genuine bigass smile and laugh. Obama was far more happy and emotive looking at Romney than looking and speaking to his wife while wishing her a happy anniversary. Call the body language experts, does this mean O is more affectionate towards an older white alpha male than his own wife? (a la Hillbuzz)

It's true that hiring should picking up starting this month for Halloween, Turkey Day, and the Christmas rush. However, those hiring numbers are supposed to be weighted, or adjusted, for seasonal variances.
This does of course lead to some room to game the numbers a bit.

Peaches, have you seen the pictures of his hair when he was younger...like in his twenties?
The man has got a seriously thick head of hair.
I've never really had a problem with his hair.
I was afraid that he would be another squish...like McCain...and not fight.
That was my big reservation about Romney.
I worried that he would just take it on the chin, and lose.

So, I have more hope now than ever before...that he can pull this off.

That was a particularly stupid thing for Obama to say. He's painting a picture of Romney on the job as president, ie, beating him. He also said he'd be busy repealing Obamacare on day 1. Must've forgotten the majority of the country wants it repealed, thus reminding 67 million people of another reason to vote Romney.
So many great moments last night. The pundits kept saying there was no one soundbite that would be replayed over and over this week. That's fortuitous, because the story became R's ass whipping of O instead.

For the first time ever, he knows something we don't. I think he knows, absolutely, without a doubt, that he is headed to Hawaii in January. I think he can hardly wait. Presidentin' is hard and he never enjoyed that part. He loves the attention and the perks and hangin' with the rappers and the movie starts, but he NEVER engaged with the job. He didn't know how and it wasn't his thing. He can still have all the things he likes, without the stuff he didn't. More and more, this is looking like a foregone conclusion to me.

From WWI:
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."

They did the Star in A Car thingy the first season, but it was a lot of C list movie stars and has been/never was rock stars.
Overall, it's not a bad bit of fluff, but I wish they would actually test drive some cars and give a review of them. Even if they aren't car experts, it would be neat to hear about what they think of cars they test drive. Being a tall fellow, I kind of like when Clarkson test drives a car because I can see how that car would actually fit me.
The show to look for is Richard Hammond's Crash Course. He has another season coming up this month, IIRC, where he travels around the US learning how to operate special vehicles. He really likes the US, and it shows in the series.

I was raised enough in the old school to know that poem and part of the story behind it....but I learned something new in spring of last year.
Turns out, poppies have long been associated with war, and the reason is perfectly natural. Everyone has seen the seeds on poppy-seed bagels, and knows that they're tiny -- and each poppy flower produces a whole lot of them, but natural poppy patches fade away over a couple of years in meadows and fields, because most of the seeds will lie dormant in the earth.
They awaken when the soil is freshly churned-up. We had a patch that had poppies seven or eight years ago, and decided to stir-in a few inches of compost and plant some new things there -- and, all-of-a-sudden, we had poppies springing up all over the place!
So, imagine you're a peasant, and you've been grazing your cattle in a field for years, when fighting men appear and march across it, then a charge of knights in armor, followed by a counter-charge and rout.....and when spring comes along the next year, among the arrow-heads and broken spears, clumps of poppies pop-up where the fighting was fiercest. And then imagine the Great War, with artillery and mass movements, bringing the industrial age to bear against mass forces.....and re-read the poem. It wasn't just clumps where the fighting was fiercest....it was horror and wonder at masses of poppies carpeting Europe from the large new graveyards to fields in the country.

I've always wondered if they are unofficially tasked with keeping an eye on his mental fitness too (any prez, not just O). If a president were to really start to crack up, his inner circle would protect him but the SS are always around and would be a good source to keep tabs on increasingly bizarre behavior.

Nope. Protection only. It is the only way they can have the protection at all times. They do not pay attention to what the President is doing, they are only doing threat assessments. If they start paying attention to who they protect, they miss what they are protecting them from.

As a devoted "gun dick", as Ace used to describe those of my ilk, I'd be worried that all these sensationalist guns shows on TV would hurt one of my favorite causes. Since there's no such thing as a gun control debate, my side having won the war, I'll watch. It should be stupid, but might be funny.

Something I've noticed with tv shows...
When something is a 'hit' and gets good ratings, you get more shows like that.
So...since I would like to see more conservative shows...I try to do my part to boost their ratings.
Even though Sean Hannity isn't as hard-hitting as I would like him to be...
He's better than O'Really...and Gretta....who are not very conservative.
I keep hoping that Fox will move up Red Eye to an earlier slot.

In a letter obtained by Univision News and sent to Attorney General Eric Holder, Issa and Grassley inquired about the previously unreported Fast and Furious guns that were linked to violent crimes and featured in the Univision News report. The letter pays special attention to three firearms connected to an ATF gun-tracing operation that were used in a massacre of 15 teenagers in Villas de Salvarcar.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder speaks during a news conference in Towson, Md., Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, to announce $2.4 million in grants that are intended to assist 13 jurisdictions with intellectual property law enforcement efforts.
"The three Fast and Furious weapons allegedly used in the [Villas de Salvarcar] attack were not referenced either in your September 9, 2011 or your June 7, 2012 letters responding to our requests for information on recoveries, and particular recoveries associated with violent crimes," Darrell and Issa write to Holder.
The letter includes ten questions about this particular crime and about how Operation Fast and Furious was related to violent crimes in Mexico. The answers to those questions are expected "by no later than October 14, 2012."

Irongrampa! Good to see you. I went through my "my parents may know a thing or two epiphany" around age 25. That's one of the drawbacks of the modern "everyone go to college" track. I was securely in the university bubble from 18-21. It took a long time for that bubble to burst, because it persists long after you've left college. If I could go back and speak to myself in August of 2001, I'd say "self, it's about to get real ugly. If you go sign up to fly helicopters for the Army today, you won't regret not doing so for the rest of your life."

The broadcast, which appeared unexpectedly over many US television stations, superficially seems to be a debate between US president Barack Obama and an unnamed other person, possibly the president's debate coach John Kerry. However, the incendiary and invidious intent of the presentation soon makes itself obvious.
Mr. Lerher, who appears in the role of moderator, continually allows the opponent to berate and insult the president by citing the latter's record as chief executive as well as quoting his words directly. Mr. Lerher also repeatedly fails to stop the opponent from going over his allotted 30% of speaking time. At one point, Mr. Lerher threatens the president's life directly, telling him “you’re way over the two minutes.”

Experts said the price increases could continue for weeks and the average might even break the $5 mark. Already by Thursday afternoon, at least five Los Angeles area gas stations had crossed the $5 per gallon mark, according to GasBuddy.com, including one charging $5.29 per gallon in Burbank and another at $5.11 in Norwalk. One station in Calabasas was even charging $5.69.
"We are looking at the highest California prices ever," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst for Oil Price Information Service, which compiles the price data for AAA.
A refinery closure, a contaminated pipeline and the state's strict pollution limits are all, in part, to blame, experts said. Gasoline inventories across the state are lower than they have been in more than 10 years.
The cost of gasoline in California jumped 8.3 cents Thursday to $4.32 per gallon, up 18 cents over last week, according to the AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge. The national average Thursday was $3.78.

According to the FTC, after getting the consumers on the phone, the telemarketers allegedly claimed they were affiliated with legitimate companies, including Dell, Microsoft, McAfee, and Norton, and told consumers they had detected malware that posed an imminent threat to their computers. To demonstrate the need for immediate help, the scammers directed consumers to a utility area of their computer and falsely claimed that it demonstrated that the computer was infected. The scammers then offered to rid the computer of malware for fees ranging from $49 to $450. When consumers agreed to pay the fee for fixing the “problems,” the telemarketers directed them to a website to enter a code or download a software program that allowed the scammers remote access to the consumers’ computers. Once the telemarketers took control of the consumers’ computers, they “removed” the non-existent malware and downloaded otherwise free programs.

536 Also, the show has to be able to mock cars and manufacturers. This may cause bad blood, but that itself can be a running joke.
Also the stunts have to be "honest" or obviously fake. British TG crosses those lines sometimes.
-----------
The original Top Gear is on BBC...which is funded by tax dollars over there.
So that allows them to mock cars and manufacturers with a little more autonomy.
I've noticed that they seem to love mocking American-made cars.
Not all of them...but a lot of them.
And Britian is not exactly a hotbed of automotive manufacturing...so they can afford to mock everyone else.
And yeah...some of their 'challenges' have been pretty silly.
Some have been irksome, like the one where they mocked the baby Jesus, by using a baby Stig.
But we still watch it.
Because so much of what is on tv is pure shit.

"10/4." Get it?
This was widely hilarious 40 years ago. It would show up in several comic strips and comedy spots every year. I ran it past my office custodian about 20 years back, and he about died. Also, he remembered Crawford's great starring roles (he once played a man from our hometown, rarely seen in film, in a Berlin-based cold war espionage film noir). I reitred, but we still look each other up every 10/4 for a poke in the ribs.
Never heard of him? Oscar for Willie Stark in All The King's Men, and the Washington gangster in Born Yesterday. Tough as nails and nobody's sweetheart.

For those of us who remember 1973, it wasn't oil embargoes on supplies that caused gasoline rationing....it was government reaction to oil supply issues that caused rationing. The free market will yank up the price; government intervention will dry up the supply.

That's an interesting take on it. Weird thing about a disco revival is that it doesn't surprise me. Used to hate disco with a passion, but, the way poipular music has gone, disco now sounds pretty good by comparison. I can remember why I hated it at the time, but damn, today it sounds like mozart, or something.

I understand that you can have things shoved up your ass without injected drugs -- and I live close enough to San Francisco to know that this sometimes costs extra -- but I'm not sure how this will work.
What I do know, however, is that I need to have this done in 2012 -- because the Obamacare clusterfuck is going to overwhelm medicine as we know it over 2013-2015. Which gives colon polyps 3 extra years to try to kill me if I don't deal with them now.

712 People listened to disco in the 1970s because the rock of the time was worse. But then they got embarrassed and pretended to like the bad rock. If they had just been honest we could have been spared decades of awful "classic rock."

not really. disco just choked on it's own bullshit.
early 70's rock is not even really similar to late 70's stuff, which got to be a whole orchestral over-done thing that lost it's way. a return to simplicity gave rise to punk. new wave was born out a mixture of punk and good poly synths.

Love the sentiment, Dr. Lecter, but unfortunately if your goal is to NOT kill patients, then it becomes imperative to have malpractice because no one will accept a bad outcome, it must be the doctor's fault. And since in the ER I will have a few patients die every month no matter what I do because they are already dying or dead when they arrive, I kind of need it.

If you started paying attention about the time Styx started that Mr. Roboto shit, I don't blame you a bit. But if you missed all the AO rock from 72-76 you missed a lot. Unfortunately, you don't hear a lot of the best stuff now.
Also, from the Beatles on, the whole biz was mostly about hype. And, it got worse and worse until the punks showed up and told everyone to shove their hype. But, then it didn't take long for the punks to be swallowed by hype, too.
In a big way hype killed disco, too. A lot of soul/funk dance music was pretty good before it went so over-the-top-commercial that it ended up starting the disco riots.

Nah. Not now. Disco sounds pretty good with hindsight. Not my cup of tea, exactly, but it has a simple, effective charm that rocks in it's own way and usually boasts some excellent musicianship. I gotta give it props compared to today's sludge.

A pre-debate prediction from some supposed classmate of both candidates:
“When they debate, Barack will smoke Romney,” Barthwell, 64, told The Daily in May. “Mitt Romney is smart,” he said at the time. “Having said all that, I still think he’s going to get smoked. The best he can do is hopefully come out not looking like a fool. Mitt will find out the hard way as soon as they have their first debate: You don’t debate Obama.”

If you have an open mind about it, you might want to look around a little. This is the birth of all the metals, southern rock, the big horn bands, the gospel rock time, country rock, and a lot of other genres. A lot of the musicianship was stellar. And, a lot of the pop was sheer crap.

In the late 1970s there was rock and there was disco. And there was a ridiculous war between the two. If you looked at the charts it was clear disco was winning.
But then the tide turned, disco became homo music, and rock won. We've been forced to listen to horrible 1970s rock ever since.
According to Wikipedia, the Bee Gees' "Spirits Having Flown" (1979) album sold 20 million copies. Good luck finding someone who admits to buying one.

Personal favorite, 65-75. Such a wide variety. Was young enough to enjoy the british invasion. Old enough and starting to play when the late 60's hit. Imagine if you will, being 14, playing the drums for a couple of years, and Innagaddadavida comes out. Radio stations are playing everything from folk, to Motown, to Led Zeppelin.
If it lifted my spirits, it was good music.
When rock went "beat your head against a wall", it lost me.

I especially like his views on education and apprenticeships. I encouraged my kids to attend two community college certificate programs in order to stay out of from under the mountain of debt.
I have also experienced the 'flow' in certain phases of my career. Searching for flow causes me to relocate every decade or so. I'm overdue.

And I hear people talk about mainstream but to me that would mean it all sounds the same to get played.
Let's see: Zeppelin, Hendrix, Doors, Doobies, Eagles, Ten Years After, Tull, Moody Blues, I could go on but you get the picture.

Don't mean "mainstream" as a bad term. It's what was selling, getting high rotation etc at the time. Generally speaking it was pretty eclectic during that decade. There were bursts of uniformity, but it didn't usually last too long. Even when something was the dominant thing for a year or so, the results were pretty good. The "indie" part is more a shorthand for the change in the mid 70's away from the "big" acts/labels, back to bar/pub sized outfits + limited pressings etc. It didn't stay that way, but it had a big effect.. Dunno, Ramones is a good example. One of the earliest, anyway.
