Overnight Open Thread (11-1-2012) – Fleeing the Country Edition
— Maetenloch

That's right - I'm off to Germany next week for uh, business stuff yeah important business thingys and stuff. And of course it's purely coincidence that my parents will also be in Europe during the election along with all their assets.

So I may or may not be posting next week. Or returning. :-O

Ah who am I kidding - all the assets - the bass boat, the school bus, the silver dimes, vintage pr0n and the investment grade cubic zirconia - are still in the TN bunker. So I gotta come back for those.

It's Showtime Folks!

Now is when all the training and lifestyle discipline starts paying off. Gotta stay focused for a just a few more days.

Obama's Reverend: All 'Whites Going to Hell'

Apparently electing a black president did NOT end racial hatred:

All white people are going to hell, longtime African-American civil rights advocate Rev. Joseph Lowery told an audience at a get-out-the-vote event held Oct. 27 in Georgia.

Lowery, who gave the benediction at the January 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama, told the audience of up to 300 African-Americans "that when he was a young militant, he used to say all white folks were going to hell. Then he mellowed and just said most of them were. Now, he said, he is back to where he was," according to an Oct. 31 report in the Monroe County Reporter newspaper.

I wonder if he follows the one-drop rule for being hell-bound or if 50% honkitude is enough?

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party

Did Pepsi Screw the Pooch?

Now they're a distant second in the cola wars. Another victim of the Obama curse.

Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi, in the job for about five years, was reportedly a huge Obama backer and behind the re-branding decision. Brilliant strategy: piss off half the country with your brand. I'd rather drink tap water than a Pepsi.

Why Doesn't George Lucas Love America?

Because I've been informed by many wealthy patriotsTM that paying more taxes is how you prove your love for the country. Yet Lucas betrayed this nation by shamelessly attempting to lower his taxes when he sold LucasFilms to Disney:

That Lucas struck a deal in 2012 may be no accident either, advisers say. Long-term capital gains tax from the sale of assets held more than one year are taxed at a rate of 15% for investors in the 25% income tax bracket or above (Lucas's level), and zero for investors in the 10% or 15% bracket. Those rates are set to jump to 20% and 10%, respectively in January. "He probably wanted to take advantage of the lower rate on long-term capital gain while it's certain," says Bill Smith, managing director at CBIZ MHM, a national accounting and professional services provider.

George-Lucas-Star-Wars-1024x7921

But the upside/downside of Disney Star Wars is that you do get an ewok Slash:

Can You Date Someone With Different Politics?

By and large it's liberals who are the ones who would never consider dating a <shudder> Republican.

Eight hundred miles from Ms. Davis's side, in Winston-Salem, N.C., Charles Rawlings is a neurosurgeon, attorney, deep-sea diver and published photographer. Like Ms. Davis, Dr. Rawlings, 53, is from Tennessee, and he is divorced with three children to whom he is devoted. He leads underwater photography expeditions when he isn't driving his daughter to cheerleading practice and representing patients in medical malpractice cases.

...Winston-Salem has offered slim pickings for a liberal thinker who says his new book, "It Really Is That Complicated," "grabs the reader and propels them through the exotic (and erotic) landscape that is the foundation for male/female relationships."

The city is "extremely conservative, politically and in its view on life," he says. There are plenty of eligible women, with one problem: "They could be Miss America or a member of Mensa, but as soon as they say 'I'm a Republican,' probably in five minutes we won't be talking."

Now I wouldn't want to date a true die-hard liberal just because it'd probably result in endless disagreements where I'm just being the asshole (as opposed to now where it's a manageable 61% :-)). But I would be open to a Democrat (if they mostly shared my values) just because for so many people being a Democrat is the easy default no-thinking position to avoid being Republican evil.

There is more to life than politics. There are shared interests and values. You might like the same music; admire the same principles; have similar attitudes towards what makes a person worthwhile.
And you might think the other person is cute.
It seems to me that it would be a shame to throw all that out the window over politics.
That said, I would have no desire to date Sandra Fluke, were I not married.

Levi's New Bad Idea Green Jeans

Made from 20% recycled plastic bottles:

Because the color of the plastic is retained through the recycling process, the denim apparel takes on a hue (which Levi's describes it as a "beautiful undertone" - presumably according to the color of plastic chosen for the particular garment, rather than a muddy mixture of the lot.

A burglar broke into an elderly man's home - but what he didn't count on was that 90-year-old Jay Leone was a former Sheriff's deputy and armed. After trying to kill Leone and getting shot for his troubles of course the burglar is now suing him:

The plaintiff/criminal suspect, Samuel Cutrufelli, allegedly kicked in the door of 90-year-old Jay Leone's California home. Leone was ordered not to move as Cutrufelli scoured the house for valuables.

After some time, Leone told the burglar that he needed to use the bathroom. But instead of a potty break, Leone went to retrieve his .357 revolver.

Leone allegedly emerged from the bathroom with the revolver and pointed it at the burglar. Cutrufelli then took the first shot and hit Leone in the cheek, reports CBS News. Leone, a former sheriff's deputy, returned fire as Cutrufelli begged for his life.

As Leone tells it, "I looked him straight in the eye. He says, 'Don't kill me. Don't kill me... I've got a daughter!' I said, 'F- you ... pow, pow, pow, pow!'"

While Leone hit Cutrufelli with three of the shots, the criminal suspect allegedly rushed Leone, wrestled him to the floor, and then tried to kill Leone with his own weapon. But when Cutrufelli pulled the trigger, his weapon was out of ammo.

Cutrufelli eventually escaped and called for medical treatment, claiming that he'd shot himself. However, police promptly arrested him for suspicion of burglary and attempted murder, reports CBS.

Perhaps smarting over being outsmarted by his 90-year-old victim, Cutrufelli filed a lawsuit claiming that Leone negligently shot him.

While Leone hit Cutrufelli with three of the shots, the criminal suspect allegedly rushed Leone, wrestled him to the floor, and then tried to kill Leone with his own weapon. But when Cutrufelli pulled the trigger, his weapon was out of ammo. Good thing Leone emptied his gun into the scumbag (though that could very easily have gotten Leone time in jail in many insane places in America). Shame Leone didn't kill him. Cutrufelli deserves to be tortured to death ... for the children.

Not sure if it's my imagination or not but the past few mornings when I wake I get a brief whiff of .. not sure what but I think it's a precusor to retribution, coming Nov. 6th.

So I seem to recall some asshole saying the tornados and flooding in the south and midwest were punishment from above for some stupid think like being bitter clingers or being "red" states or some shit like that.  So is it radio silence that the people suffering as a result of hurricane Sandy live in "blue"  states?

my reference to retribution above refers to the election.  Ever since seeing all those people waiting in line to get chik fil a over the summer I have really believed Romney will win.

I just hope I'm right.  I also hope all those poor people affected by Sandy get the help they need asap.

I got an odd one on my landline tonight.  Guy saying he was part of the Romney team.  Asking if I could give more money to get them to win.  He said I could donate up to $133.  That if I gave him my debit or credit over the phone, he could process it faster than if I used the Romney web-site like I told him I would.  That is when I hung up on him.  Probably should call my Sec of State tomorrow about it.

I blame the divorce culture.  The risk to dating a divorced woman is enormous, before you know it you could wind up paying child support for kids that aren't yours.  I have a relative who was bankrupted precisely because of a scenario like that.

125 "By and large it's liberals who are the ones who would never consider dating a Republican." i'm sure there's a pretty equal distaste for dating someone with opposite political views among the highly-active (or just highly-political) on either side of the divide...and i think you need a little more "meta" in your analysis if you're claiming that conservatives are open-minded while in the same breath dismissing the possibility that liberals could ever be >.> partisanship has gotten *so* bad in this country over the last ~8~12 years, and i think it's going to be up to conservatives to drop the "all liberals are intractable nasties" rhetoric and show, by example, how childish liberals are being with their own blanket dismissal of any possibility of conservatives' good faith. after all, as long as the "pelosi wing" controls the democratic party, it's hard to see liberals being the first to make that change themselves. i just wish we could have discussions about serious issues without immediately assuming bad faith and maleficent intent...and that's hard to do even among folks of the same partisan affiliation, much less across the aisles. there's a lot of healing to be done, and it's gonna start with the election of a reasonable politician who actually showed by example how serious he was about rising above the gutter-political mud slinging and focussing on The Big Picture! as for The Big Picture, i wonder about those levi's jeans :3 i like a little bit of colour in my clothing, but the pictures i've seen have all been pretty boring. i can't imagine that recycled plastics could possibly make cotton anything but less comfortable...never liked the feel of synthetic fibres! something tells me this is prolly just another case of Green Tech Gone Mad. o.o

128 Did I miss the job numbers thread? I think this is interesting (from CBS!): In today's release, the first one using ADP's new methodology, the payroll company said non-farm private employers added 158,000 jobs in October. That's in line with the 162,000 jobs it said the economy generated in September. Or not. According to ADP's new formula, job growth in September was half of what the company previously reported: Private sector employment increased by 88,200 jobs from August to September, according to the September ADP National Employment Report... Last month's employment estimate was revised down from 80,000 to 76,400 jobs. In gauging the state of the job market in a given month, the difference between 162,000 and 88,200 jobs is a major difference -- and that's not the only downward revision in the report. ADP previously said that the U.S. added 4,000 manufacturing jobs in October. But the latest report now says the economy actually lost 17,400 manufacturing jobs." Sounds like the numbers are being made up as they go along.

136 Today David Ignatius Ignatius in the Washington Post writes:

"5:15 a.m.: A new Libyan assault begins, this time with mortars. Two rounds miss and the next three hit the roof. The rooftop defenders never 'laser the mortars.' as has been reported. They donÂ’t know the weapons are in place until the indirect fire begins, nor are the mortars observed by the drone overhead. The defenders have focused their laser sights earlier on several Libyan attackers, as warnings not to fire."

I wrote to a military contact with the following observation:

"So, Ignatius wants us to believe that after the U.S. mission is hit by a coordinated assault of 150 men; the U.S. ambassador is missing; one American is confirmed dead; all pleas for help have been ignored; and a second assault has begun, former Navy SEALs in the middle of a firefight focus their lasers on armed attackers as warnings not to fire. Never mind the infrared discipline issue; since when do SEALs warn enemy assault teams to stop their operation or else?"

My contact responded thusly:

"Don't worry about Ignatius, and watch PJ Media tomorrow. We have what I would consider the 'smoking gun.'"

Stay tuned.

Some how they will blame this low number on Romney and his can food drive when in reality it is the media blackout of how really bad it is but they have to have the blackout or that will damage FEMA's "great reputation" and have people think they can do things on their own or have food storage for 5-8 days with water and a full tank of gas and five or more 5 gallon extra in Jerry cans filled when the hurricane was just passing Florida.

Puhleeze! He's been imploring of his audiences to donate to the Red Cross. Maybe he should switch to the Salvation Army.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at November 01, 2012 07:21 PM (piMMO)

158 The press needs a disaster primer, one page about fourth gade reading level with pictures to explain the disaster response process and roles. They screw it up, people get the wrong expectations, and shit gets worse. Simple stuff, FEMA writes checks esp to first responders, don't get upset when you see the Salvation Army and not the Red Cross - they actually coordinate so as to not duplicate efforts, your ass is your responsibility for 72hrs - maybe more, the rescue/recovery/survey teams are not there to feed thousands, feeding the multitude requires trucks and palletized food direct from factories, etc.

I met one gorgeous girl who was like that, and expressed a few conservative principles to her she acted like it was the first time she had ever heard of such a thing.

The concept of finally understanding that we do not have unlimited resources to fund universal healthcare is like a religious experience.  Get them to concede that money does not grow on trees, and the rich does not have the equivalent of Scrooge's bin full of money to play with, and you're halfway home.

Then again she was also batshit insane, but that's another story.

266 Yeah, I can understand what its like watching EVs in Ohio.  But to date they are way under their numbers.  Obama's margin of victory is currently wiped out, because they are down about 180,000 EVs while the GOP is up 80,000.  He won Ohio by 260,000.

As long as Romney wins on election day proper, he wins Ohio.  With the Independents at 8% for Romney, the Dems need to turnout at something like D+8 on Tuesday to take the state.

Kind of rough estimates, but I don't feel like finding the exact numbers right now.

We occasionally rib each other about it, but only in jest. The most important thing about our success is that we agree on everything else - how to raise the kids, past times, humor, and our love of music. Also, both of us have been near death at points in our lives and that makes politics seem less important. I would rather enjoy life with my beautiful wife than fight about politics. True enough.  I was there the night of the Obama rally on OSU campus where they had buses on site to send people to the EV location.  We were told to expect 2-3,000 from the rally, and that even though doors didn't close until 9pm (that was the day after Columbus Day, so the hours were extended to compensate), we might not be out of there until close to midnight.

Then 10 buses showed up, max capacity of 60, and the chatty sheriff I was talking to said at least one of them was only half full.  You do the math.

By 8:30 there were tumbleweeds in the aisles, it was so dead in there.  I felt pretty damn good that night.

The good...he is applying for Naval ROTC at Kansas University and has a pretty good chance cause of his grades plus my service history. The bad...he has concerns that his girlfriend might by pregnant. Yesterday she took a private test and it was negative. I then told him to wait for 2 weeks and have her take another test before a real doctor test since her parents do not know and my son's mother doesn't know. He only trusts me (mom and I are divorced), but I wasn't easy on him. I told him that no matter what, there will be no abortion and then I explained to him that he would have had a half brother/sister, but that child was aborted by his half-sisters mother many years ago. There sure as hell ain't no manual when it comes to raising kids.

304 Well I finally saw Dark Knight Rises and... I was pretty disappointed. The last half hour of the film or so is pretty dramatic and every scene with Catwoman was worth watching but there were way too many "what the hell??" moments and bizarre implausibilities to even make the film entertaining to me.
The most obnoxious part was the climb out of the pit. That wall was so rocky and rough I could easily climb out of it and I'm out of shape and 46 years old. That was so horribly done it was just unbearable.
I put up with the Joker's magical gasoline bomb summoning ability in the second film because the rest was so good but this one had too many of those moments, from smuggling motorcycles into the stock exchange building to having hackers blatantly manipulating the system and nobody blocking or shutting down the trades to cops charging down a street like a bunch of medieval retards to magic blink thugs with machine guns who suddenly appear out of nowhere, on and on... it was just weak.
Even the final confrontation didn't make sense to me. Why was Batman suddenly able to beat up Bane when he couldn't before? What changed? Why couldn't he beat him in the first place, being big and muscly doesn't make you able to take a kick from a guy who can casually kick through a brick wall. It was just absurd from beginning to end.
Very, very disappointing end to the series.

Obama is bi-racial.  Does that mean half of him goes to hell and the other half to heaven?  And which half goes where?

And what if you're of mixed race?    Say, part Asian, part black, part white, part  Amerindian?   What part goes where?  Is there an afterlife bureaucracy  that  will sort  this  out?

313 Yeah I'm not sure how accurate that generals count and names is, and its awfully hard to check. Looks pretty plausible though. You have to wonder about the judgment of those four knuckleheads. I mean I know Powell is voting for the brotha because he's a brotha but the others?

316 A marriage between a liberal and a conservative? Geez, I can barely get through a 3 hour visit with my sister in law. The last time she was here she brought up illegal aliens. I wiped the floor up with her ass. Her only argument seemed to be that she didn't like a couple of wealthy women she knows who were against TFG's executive order. Because they're rich, the evil bitches. So I went at her with how schools and hospitals in SW states are overwhelmed with providing services to illegal aliens. If she ever brings it up again, I'm going to tell her that the cost of educating illegal aliens should be covered by cutting teachers' pay and benefits. She's a union teacher.

I can't express how much the military is ticked off over this colossal fail at the highest levels of government.

My family served all over the world and I can tell you that our connections to retired military brass all the way up to generals... they are beyond pissed.

Pray for our country because it is so fractured.

321 As for civility, remember when Richard Dreyfuss started that "Civility project" and 2 minutes later stated that Ed Schultz's wish for Dick Cheney's death was "beautifully phrased"? Riiiiiiight. The one that really sticks in my craw is that ratfucking cocksucking suspected pedophile Harry Reid, who IIRC, in the Donk response to W's 2005 State of the Union address, said essentially "congratulations on winning re-election Mr. President. Now YOU need to compromise with US."

Sandra Fluke thinks her health care insurance should supply her with free contraception. To take that to it's logical conclusion... it should also supply her with free alcohol, because nobody in their right mind is going to have sex with her without being severely impaired.

That makes alcohol a right. A value-rite.

Contraception should be mandatorily sold at liquor stores, or liquor should be sold at drug stores. Isn't that logical... in her line of thinking?

Al, the thing about Wes Clark is.  He is truly a political general.  Waco, the armor came from his unit according to some reports.  His career was marking time for retirement.  After Waco, he becomes SACUER just in time to bomb Yugoslavia.  He almost starts a shooting war with the Russians over Prstina.  British commander fends off Clark's troop request and calls White Hall who calls the White House.  Meanwhile Clark is being resisted by the USN Admiral off shore.  White House calls Hungary and Hungary denies the Russians over-flight rights.  And suddenly Clark is heading to retirement.  But he is still a faithful Democratic tool.

I've thought the same thing. Personally, the stupid super-cryptic dialogues deal a body blow to its credibility. But like Dave said, if it's straight fiction then that guy must have a crystal ball. E.g. he mentioned the Libyan mujahid guy hanging around in cafes, etc. concurrently with or just before it was mentioned in the press, expressing dread that Obama might be able to cap him the week of the election.

380 JEM, the Karmann Ghia design is a truly international collaboration.  The Ghia design bureau of Turin Italy was inspired by American automotive genius Virgil Exner.  So when Karmann coachwerks of Osnabruck West Germany wanted to steal the sporty contract for the VW Beetle.  Ghia offered a unique design, Karmann crafted it in metal using the same workers that built Porsche 356s, sold the idea to Volkswagen, and in 1955 the world's slowest sexiest sports car was born.

Seriously how old are you? How long have you been dealing with actual human beings?" ...how old are *you*? take a good hard look at what you seem to think is legitimate behaviour for an adult. take a look at what you think qualifies as an appropriate response to a completely inoffensive plea for civility. i highlighted it for you. "Because by and large people don't change their behavior 'by example' - they do it in response to consequences - usually negative ones." i'm pretty sure someone who behaves like you do has absolutely no evidence either way for the efficacy of infectious civility. but still: because you say so? because someone who peddles blanket statements, abuses his power to bully people on the internet, and acts like an adolescent ass in a disagreement says so, people don't respond to civil behaviour? i have anecdotal evidence, too. as a matter of fact, the folks i have dealt with in [groups] discussions, lettres-to-the-editor disagreements, and forum arguments have *always* seemed to drop their initial hostility when it's returned with relative civility. it's not 100% successful, but i suspect you'd be really surprised at the embarrassment at one's own hostility a civil reply can engender in even the most belligerent, argumentative partisan. "killing them with kindness" really does work...at least when "they" have enough shame to realise how bad their childish behaviour makes them look. the fact that you seem to run into a lot of "negative" responses while i've managed to coax civility out of initially nasty people is probably more than just a coincidence, for the record. bush is a terrible example, because bush was also a doormat -- he was taken advantage of because he didn't stand firm to his principles. the example you might be looking for is reagan -- the last true "great uniter" in american politics --- or even mitt romney. anecdotally or not, i'm sure most of us here have at least subconsciously registered the contrast between mitt romney's rise-above-it campaign and barack obama's old-school gutter politics...and any fool can see how much better mitt romney looks for it. i'm sure there are some petty folks who would prefer to stick with the confrontation and nastiness...as evidence, there are enough posters here at the HQ who clearly get off on picking a fight over anything they can...but the average american is probably mature enough to realise that "YEAH BITCH WHAT WHAT" is best left to drunken frat-boy dick-waving contests.

Star Wars is a spent franchise. Disney should scratch the idea of reviving it and focus on spin-offs involving its more interesting characters.

Cracked had a funny article (click on link) about how Star Wars couldn't have proceeded beyond Episode VI without totally cannibalizing itself.

yeah, PW is right, don't be civil to liberals just because they demand civility. be civil to liberals when they've EARNED it. such as, by not asking leading dumb questions like "why do you Republicans always hate women so much, huh???" or nonsense like that. such as, when they've actually made an effort ahead of time to make an honest attempt to figure out what Republicans and conservatives *actually stand for*, and not just regurgitate some bullshit MSNBC talking point.

Posted by: chemjeff at November 02, 2012 12:35 AM (d/5qf)

I keep hoping that Romney's administration will start by changing up the whole relationship with the press. Someone pulls a "when did you stop beating your wife?" question, and is banned from pressers for a month. Press Secretary starts his morning with questions -- defers anything with more than toss-off answers for the afternoon, and holds full briefings in the afternoon to give presentations. You know -- like adults.

458 be civil to liberals when they've EARNED it. THIS. Kind of like when someone keeps insisting on using the "xtian" construct to refer to Christians even though they've been told that a large number of Christians find the term offensive. Why, I'd almost think that this hypothetical person was TRYING to be offensive to Christians. Especially when it would require such a small amount of effort to type a few more letters in order to be......civil.

461 yeah, PW is right, don't be civil to liberals just because they demand civility. be civil to liberals when they've EARNED it.

I mostly restrict myself to a -single- front in the ongoing war of words. Normally energy/global warming/science. The rest can be fended off if you can say you're a liberal progressive with a straight face. I'm open to new-but-tested ideas, and I -do- want change. They're free to misinterpret my statement completely. And they do. I'm in Seattle, so it's 100% perfect camouflage unless I'm in Fremont, where they want you do declare Trotsky/Lenin/Stalin/ or Mao as your fav.

Then on the -one- front, pound them. "Oh, I'm all for alternative energy ... because of course nuclear is the way to go." Or I can discuss the state of computer modelling long enough for their eyes to roll back into their heads. Or the magic treemometer and the upside-down lake sediment.

They inevitably snap. Can't handle -any- disagreement.

PW, thanx

I just learned a while ago that it is just pointless to attempt to have a discussion with people who think you're stupid and/or evil.   so if they are intent on having a discussion with you, the best you can do is just have fun with it.  play with their stereotypes and just become the most absurd republican caricature you can be.  or, use the opportunity to demonstrate obama's hypocrisy, or pelosi's, or reid's, or any of the other libtards'.  etc., etc.  they will complain that you're being "rude" and "uncivil", but that is only because they don't even realize their own initial insulting incivility from the beginning.

465 "Shocking images show desperate New Yorkers digging through dumpsters for food as downtown Manhattan embarks on fourth night without power " Don't these people have canned goods and cereal in their cupboards? loaf of bread, peanut butter? I mean it's only been a few days. We go through power outages in Michigan. You start by eating the refrigerator food and ice cream from the freezer. Of course when you live in a house, you can grill your thawed meat. When it is cool weather like this you wear about 3 layers of clothes and put extra blankets on the bed. And if you have a gas hot water heater you can take a nice warm bath. You always keep shopping bags of candles and matches, not to mention flashlights. I know that the flooding is really awful, and I've never been through it. But a week long power outage is doable, as long as it isn't 10 degrees outside.

Plumbers trick...leave the faucets open a crack to where there's a slight trickle.  The water isn't as prone to freezing when its moving.  Pour some anti-freeze in the toilet tank and flush.  That's get antifreeze into the trap/bowl, then pour some more into the fresh water in the tank.

If it goes on a long time, drain down any boilers.

485 Actual real liberals are impossible to deal with because their ideas aren't learned as a reaction to the world and consequences of their actions and others. Instead, liberals ideas are incidental (in many cases) to their ego. If that doesn't make sense, their ego is tied to their identity as "liberals," with "liberal" being in their mind a word that simply means "good person," they hold whatever positions their peer group requires for them to be called "liberal." Which is why the arguments don't make any sense, why dishonesty is rampant, and why they flip out when you challenge them - it's all about ego, you *cannot* discuss ideology or positions with a liberal without them responding emotionally. Most of them can't express the thought coherently, but if you challenge their ideas you are automatically attacking them personally. That's also why so many times their descriptions of the right not only don't make sense but are risibly distorted - it's not about the positions, it's about ego and identity, so if you aren't like them you must be the opposite of them, so that's what they believe you are. And so we get all the "warmongers, rapists, racists, abusers of the poor and ravagers of the world" horse shit they constantly vomit as if they were actual descriptions of real people.

494 The problem with most leftists is that they've grown up and lived surrounded by like-thinking people and haven't ever been challenged or had to defend their ideas. They have a completely unexamined worldview, and when you question it, they lash out sometimes violently in fear and confusion.
The worst sort of leftist is the guy that is completely demolished with facts, logic, and reality, but clings to what they just know to be true anyway. They are convinced not that they might be wrong, only that they don't have the facts they need at the time to disprove you. So they get personal and goofy in their arguments.
There are conservatives like that, too. Guys that grow up in rural areas with everyone agreeing and nobody ever questioning why they believe that way. They are just as awful at defending or understanding what they believe.

Every state in the union has its beauty, some of them a bigger than their fair share (such as Oregon) and some a lot less but all have some.
Big cities tend to be a parasite on the rest of the state, sucking all its resources and money just to make life nicer for the residents and fulfill their dreams. New York City is the biggest of big cities, even if its not the most populous right now.

How many people must they threaten, cars must they key, voters must they intimidate, innocents must they slander until you believe them? 515 I'm reasonably certain that some aspects of worldview and understanding of reality are hard wired into us as humans. That some of us tend to be more one way or another by nature and that cannot be changed completely. Some people are just born left leaning and will always be that way no matter what reality bludgeons them with. They'll find some way of believing their "deeper truth" anyway. Some are more flexible and can learn.

530 My thoughts on the liberal/conservative relationship thing is that I don't want to be put politics as the highest priority.

If I found someone who was a solid Christian actively involved with church, I think I would be willing to overlook liberal tendencies.   I think that's a better foundation than just being politically conservative.   (unfortunately, being in CA, most will have those liberal tendencies).

The flip side to that is that thanks to Obama and CA's budget situation, I have a very low tolerance to leftist crap.   I will comment on political stuff and point out how it harms society and generates the worse outcomes.

The question is really going to be if they're going to shift their politics in my direciton, or if they consider politics the dealbreaker.

And then there's the pro-life angle; I don't want to run into a girl I had sex with a year earlier and have her say, "Oh, hey, you got me pregnant! Don't worry, though; I had an abortion." I'd be horrified by that!

Rush Limbaugh proposes that most leftists hold the positions they do not out of any particular allegiance to the policies, but because they want to seem nice and look caring to other people. I think that's true for at least a few, perhaps many.
Most I think hold those positions because they just haven't ever grown up in that area. Things like socialism seem really great when you don't understand reality and how the world works, when you're a kid.
You have a basic sense of it being unfair when someone takes from you like those kids in Crowder's Halloween video, but you notice there were no complaints from the kids who got extra candy. And most people think they're the ones with less candy in their plastic pumpkin basket.

No, just one count. Remember: its all vote-by-mail in Oregon. They'll find all the ballots they need the first time through.
You can tell because they count super-left Portland Oregon last. No matter how things are going, they always find just enough from that area to push the vote to the left. Three times in a row a Republican almost won the governor position, leading until they counted those last ballots from Portland.
Its just wall to wall fraud here, and they want vote by mail only for all states.

Well there's the problem. What banker? To bail out Greece, they are forcing nations to take loans for double the interest rates they are allowed to charge Greece. Then when their banks start to fail, someone bails out that nation. And the nation who bailed them out gets a bailout from someone else. Its almost exactly like musical chairs, and its only a matter of time before that music stops.
The problem is, once it does, all the chairs will collapse, too.

Loads of history. Remember Washington retreated all through NJ and winter soldier was about his difficulties there. It was in Trenton when he snuck up on the Hessians and killed them in their sleep on Christmas Eve.

594 I don't know if this has been covered anywhere else here at HQ, but it should be interesting to those who are sceptical about global warming.  As most know, Dr. Mann has brought a law suit against Steyn and NRO and another writer.  In the papers, Mann describes himself as a Nobel Peace Prize winner for his work for the IPCC when actually the Peace Prize was given to the IPCC as an organization with no individual named; thus it was incorrect for Mann to identify himself as sharing the Nobel.  (Summary is a bit scattered brained but go to WUWT.com for a much better description.

BUT that's not the kicker:  Steyn and NRO have bought a full page ad in the Penn State student paper that shows that Mann is claiming to be a Nobel Prize winner when he actually isn't!!  Talk about taking the war to the enemies home ground.

598 A few years ago, pre-crash, Palm Beach county renovated the old county court house for an insane amount of money.  It was supposed to be a historic restoration of a landmark that dated back the early 1900's.

I did a bit of electrical work on that job.  The bits of the building that actually dated back to the early 1900's were very few.  There were several layers of more modern extensions layered over the old structure to the point where the old structure wasn't recognizable anymore.  Even within the old core, it had clearly been remodeled back around 1930's based on the materials and methods that were present.

It would have cost about 1/3 the price to build a period themed new structure that retained some of the old court bench seats and courtroom trappings.

The actual quotes to that effect come from Democratic Senators.

But the briefing covered Cairo as well as Benghazi - I have no doubt whatsoever that the video did come up for Cairo. (The Muslim Brotherhood showed it on national television in Egypt and demanded a protest over it. Shockingly, exactly that happened. In Egypt.)

Not much of a fan of Petraeus myself, but everything I've seen that was <i>particularly</i> galling has actually been said by the Senatorial fuckweasels. And they parse crap to within an inch of its life for every second they aren't lying outright.

One of my best friends lived in a house that was built circa 1640 by one of the secondary waves of Pilgrims. Posted by: jakeman at November 01, 2012 09:54 PM (96M6e)

609 I spent a few days in NYC (Manhattan) long ago. I recall that very many people who live in the high-rise buildings in the reasonably nice sections in mid-town were old ... as in retired, and frequently in need of periodic and serious medical attention. HotAir's "Dumpster Diving" thread shows the ugly potential of living in severely-densely-populated areas ... and, as per AP's quote of "Gothamist": "There are bound to be hundreds of elderly people, rich and poor, who live on the upper floors of buildings with elevators that are now disabled. IF POWER IS NOT RESTORED, THIS WILL MOVE FROM BEING AN ECONOMIC DISASTER TO A HUMANITARIAN DISASTERÂ…" I think this will end the political aspirations of Blumenthal and much of the Liberal Life that is Manhattan. Hopefully, the death toll will be small.

Posted by: weft cut-loop [/i] [/b] at November 01, 2012 10:13 PM (jo069)

629 jakeman: I think CA is unlikely to vote for Romney, but a lot of us are trying. I've been getting robocalls ... from, among others, the SEIU. It's unlikely that I'm the only one, and I vote against unions, and usually ballot choices that they favor. This election, I think I'm the not the only one. I see no "O" signs/stickers/etc., on cars, in yards, in windows ... and I live in the San Jose area. This tells me that the D's are hurting. Not just monetarily, vote-itarily. Very many people are really unhappy with Sacramento and spending. Brown is an idiot, but we know that. I have this feeling that there will be a major political change in the makeup of the State legislature, but it's just a feeling. I think a lot of people are keeping quiet about their vote ... if everyone does this, then no one can be singled out later. We don't have the same sort of problems that big union states have, as our unions are SEIU and Teachers, not Auto or Steel workers. Still, life is easier when one lives well under the radar. For these "reasons" (for lack of a better term), I think CA might be in play.

The corner of Winchester and Stevens Creek is effectively the center of political theater in the San Jose area. I saw Critical Mass there once. Just once.

I don't get down to S.J. much.  Not that it's "flyover" country, but if there's a good reason to go down there, it involves alcohol and it's a 40 mile drive.  Lots of conventions though.

681 When Prop. 13 was passed, the majority of voters in the state could still remember Ronald Reagan as Governor.

Today, I've found myself in conversations with young adults who grew up here but were unaware that Jerry Brown had been Governor previously and that it was under him that a large amount of the things wrong with this state came to be.

682 And if I haven't mentioned it lately, I want the voting age raised to 25. 30 would be better but 25 is at least medically arguable to be when true cognitive adulthood begins.

691 Republican National Committee alleges voting machine troubles in Nevada, other swing states

In a letter sent to the RNC on Thursday, Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller responded that said unsubstantiated allegations of voting machine problems based on rumor, media reports and hearsay, “undermine the public’s confidence in the electoral process.”

“While it is possible for a voter to inadvertently select a candidate, it is not possible for the machine to automatically select a candidate,” Miller said in his statement. -- rgj.com, 01 Nov 12

Can you date somebody with different politics? I could date a liberal once.  Just long enough to find out they are a liberal.  I would never marry one.  There are simply too many things already to disagree over in a household without throwing politics into the mix.

And liberals are stupid anyway.

702 52+days vs. 1/3 a day

52 days later and counting, Obama's still puffin' smoke out his White House ass and will never come clean on his Gross Dereliction of Duty. Contrast Obama's total failure of responsibility compared to the Libya military intelligence service response time of 8 hours and 20 minutes. After all, these were Americans, not Libyans. At least the Libyans showed up (after the fact) when the smoke cleared. Meanwhile, the mess of strewn "sensitive" US documents remains unsecured in Benghazi.

David Ignatius, WaPo: The times listed are Benghazi time on the night of Sept. 11 and the morning of Sept. 12:

9:40 p.m.: A senior State Department security officer at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi called the CIA base, at an annex about a mile away, and requested assistance: “The compound is under attack. People are moving through the gates.” CIA officers at the base can hear the alarm, and a team immediately begins gathering weapons and preparing to leave.

At 5:26 the attack is over. Woods and Doherty are dead and two others are wounded.

6 a.m.: Libyan forces from the military intelligence service finally arrive, now with 50 vehicles.
