— andy So, yeah, we dropped the ball on this. CDR M should know better than to think he can actually take a vacation or something.
So on with an abbreviated ONT!
First up, it's that time of year again. Mailboxes all over the US are being stuffed with junk mail, as the USPS goes deeper into the red delivering crap like this:

So just for you, morons and moronettes, The HaterÂ’s Guide To The Williams-Sonoma Catalog
Item #02-496059 Bourbon Cranberry RelishWilliams-Sonoma says: "Sauteed cranberries, bourbon, shallots and herb with a hint of orange. 16oz."
Price: $40
Notes from Drew: That's 40 bucks for a bowl of cranberry sauce that everyone will pass up because we all prefer the shit that costs two bucks and comes plopping out of the can in the shape of the can. The second ingredient is LEAD. For 40 bucks, you should get the bourbon on its own.
An annual favorite at the HQ - the turkey frying PSA:
Don't burn your house down next week, okay.
CDR M phoned this one in, literally: The first 40 minutes of BSG: Blood & Chrome
[Update:] There was a call for boobehs. I thought I had you people trained to go to The Hostages for that. Or those. You know what I mean.
And don't feel left out, 'ettes.
That's it. Enjoy your Friday night a-commentin', and I'll catch you fine folks in the morning.

Buddy: Yes but Curt is doing it. He's done it twice
Buddy: I gotta go to the store, wanna ride shotgun?
Me: Okay, I'll want more ice anyway.
While at the store there are sirens
Buddy: MY FUCKING HOUSE!!
Curt: That never happened before.
Me: At least my whiskey was safe in my truck, and I have ice.

Just a raw number total (without researching the %'s from some of the companies listed) puts the running total since 11.06.2012 @ 85,621* jobs lost.

Oh, we ALWAYS take the Friday off. Biggest shopping day of the year, I believe. It's traditionally the start to the Xmas season.
Anyway - I'd been to Vancouver and Toronto, but Edmonton was the first time I'd been deep into Canada. Really great people. I'm a huge baseball fan, but I had never heard of the Women's World Baseball Tourney before. They were having that in Edmonton. I think some Cubans defected - heh heh. Plus I learned of the Canadien version of "This Land is Your Land". Then, in the middle of a serious conference, two canucks started arguing about something I couldn't figure out at first. Turned out it was Oilers vs Flames. I'm not a hockey fan, sir, but I can appreciate your loyalties. I like Canada.

I glanced at the still from the embedded CNN report and didn't bother watching when I read "CNN's Brian Todd reports on how tough a ground invasion would be."
Someone ought to do a story on how before every American and Israeli action, the western press does its best to demoralize us by telling us that
1. the enemy is terrifyingly formidable;
2. our troops have questionable fighting abilities;
3. our technology won't work the way it's supposed to.
Everyone's apparently forgotten Operation Cast Lead, launched into Gaza in 2008 by the weakest prime minister Israel has ever had. After three weeks of urban fighting--the hardest and most dangerous warfare you can undertake--the Israelis had suffered 13 KIA while killing about 1000 Hamas fighters.
Prior to the last invasion, the USMC set up MOUT (military operations on urban terrain) training centers in Israel and taught our allies countermeasures to every weapon in Hamas' arsenal. When the invasion came, the Israelis did what the marines did in Fallujah: They avoided the IEDs and EFPs on the roads by making new roads--through houses. They used mine-clearing line charges (MICLICs) to detonate IEDs and EFPs, most of which had been previously located using drones and data-mining programs to determine the most likely locations.
Also, the Israelis have turned their obsolete Merkava main battle tanks into troop carriers. The Merkava is the only MBT with the engine in front and doors in the back. To make them into the most heavily armored troop carriers on earth, you just take off the turret. The low silhouette protects it as well.
Finally, the Israelis have the fully automated Trophy advanced tank protection system on all their tanks and troop carriers, which can intercept anti-tank missiles and RPGs from as little as six feet away.
Nobody should watch CNN anymore. They have no idea what they're talking about. The last invasion of Gaza was one of the most lopsided military victories in history. The hardened Iranian- and Chechen-trained terrorists of Hamas were utterly massacred by the Israelis. This is what Hamas does best when fighting the IDF:

MRE's are very pricey. And bulky. But if you have to have an indestructable, Meal, Ready to Eat, they are good.
But...You might not like the tasted of them.
Stuff that you like to eat is important.
So...I'd say buy only one case of MRE's. Put a few in each trunk of your car, and your bug out bag if you have them. But that is it.
As for the rest of your stockpiled food, concentrate on stuff that is cheap, long lasting, AND STUFF YOU ACTUALLY LIKE TO EAT AND DO EAT.
So pasta and sauce is good.
Whole wheat grain... probably not.
And make sure you periodically use and replace this stuff. Rotate it into your actual meals.
Hope this helps.

Stuff that you like to eat is important.
So...I'd say buy onlyone case of MRE's. Put a few in each trunk of your car, and your bug out bag if you have them. But that is it. These can be your true "in extremis" emergency food.

I'm an ex 11 series...I can handle the taste and yeah they can be pricey of course you can do magic tricks with them...
I'm trying to decide what to do I ambreaking down my bugout into 3 phases....
1 launch 3-5 days of food/fuel/weaponry
2 transition spare 3 days if adversity strikes
3 stability at site I want 35-95 days of foodstuffs, genny, ammo, reading material, bedding etc etc
May buy a conex to leave on Boss' land until I acquire some.
Thanks for the tips though.
Guess my main concern best stated would be stretching the supplies if I take on a refugee or two.
May be easier with non MREs....

It was a package addressed to Bryant Gumbel and everyone in the office had decided to let it miss the sort, just for the helluva it.

Here's a survival tip. I haven't implemented it yet, but I will in the next couple of trips to the grocery.
Stockpile some booze. Whiskey, beer, etc.
It rotates well, and can be used to barter as well.
Let's say a hurricane hits. Floods...whatever.
On day five or so...supplies may be low in the neighborhood.
If you need some help from a neighbor, he might not be so interested in cash (nothing in the stores to buy).
But a twelve pack of beer? He might do a lot of work for you if you promise him a case of beer.

252 Just a little comment.
Got into a conversation with a younger women who was just delighted about Obama and kept on and on how women finally have a chance to be treated as equals and also finally have a chance to show that they can do the same work as men and get equal pay. So I mentioned to her that in all my life, that I worked with almost exclusively with men and always got paid the same as them. She looked at me skeptically and asked what I do. "I am a welder" Her eyes went big and she said (and this is word for word "Oh my god, how can you do that? That's a man's job"
Believe me, I cracked up laughing, I almost cried!

Yes...yes I do
They were sheepish but said "we know you are serious and wife is gone."
Good people I miss.

If you are going above ground. Though digging a 48ft long trench I can see why you would pass. Still need to camouflage.
Perhaps buy a car junk yard. Move CONEX there. And surround it with cars. Or put dirt berms around it and on roof. Then plant sod like the Germans do with their HAS.

It is narcissism and bigotry.
I try to have a sharp mind because God wants me to succeed.
I try to think of efficiency savings because God wants me to be frugal so in hard times I can share.
Science is reverse engineering His system.

Um, no, it really isn't. I've read it a couple of times, and it doesn't say anything of the sort. It talks about the whole world at a particular time become more and more wretched so God gives the people of that time a final series of kicks in the ass to repent. And then calls an end to this creation because we're on such a course that no one would survive anyway. And then there's the resurrection of the dead, judgment, and eternal life, neither of which fit (as far as I can see) either of the alternative suggestions made here.
I think you may be confused by the aspects of Antichrist common in all dictators (If you look at first Samuel, God makes it clear that all governments are efforts on our part to replace Him, so this commonality is not surprising), but I think that's part of what God refers to as birth pangs-they resemble the end, but are not it.
My two cents, anyway.

First do this (but take out the spaces - I put them in so the command doesn;t work here): [ i ] Now everything will be italicized. To close italics, do this: [ /i ] (again no spaces). Be sure to close them or you will have to get in the barrel...

We're just going to have to disagree there, I guess. There has never been a one world government, just pretenders (early pangs). That seems like a distinction in what we're saying, to me. If you're acknowledging that one of these attempts will eventually succeed, and all the miraculous details of Revelation then kicks in, then it's not as much of a distinction.
I'm just wary of taking what feels to me to be the Hollywood angle of 'If we do X, we can buy more time" (X being stopping the Antichrist in some fashion). My sense of it is by the time God's overt action kicks in, the situation is already unrecoverable.

The issue is not the threat though I fear the earnestness of the Jihadi more than Ivan the issue is that 90+% of the populace does not take the issue seriously anymore and this Government will not tell them.
Not telling you to be a doomsayer either just saying.

I especially love the "documented fact" of Nuclear winter which is just agitprop probably and way off....sounds ike AGW theory actually.
Main thing for folk will be if you ain in the blast zone do NOT panic.

A port attack. Easy actually as only 1/3 containers are ever checked. Los Angeles/Long Beach would be a devasting target if they could pull it off. Or something over the border - dirty bomb that kills thousands or more. The variables are endless. NYC will look like only a warm up.
Sven10077 - thanks for your thoughts and insight. A serious leader soon? Do we have any military/Political with any balls and integrity to do what is right? I pray but don't have my hopes up.

Well I'm almost 41 now but have been drinking more in the past couple of years to the point it's become somewhat worrisome. The fact that three guys on my dads side of the family had early deaths due to chronic alcoholism tells me to back the hell off the bottle.

I was hammered on election night after slugging down 3 liters of wine and finished off my last three smokes the following morning. I've decided that I really don't want to smoke any more and that my regular binge drinking needs to come to an end. I doubt I'll drink again any earlier than New Year's Day and, even then, it probably won't be to excess.
I've just turned 38 and been a lush for damn near 20 years. The re-anointment of Jug Hussein Ears has really driven the point home that I can no longer sit back fat, drunk, and stupid if I'm to survive what's coming in the near future.

Reagan was serious and while a veteran he demurred on seeking praise as one.
I do not know. One thing about Perry is he was a serious military man.
The current occupant SINCERELY thinks he can simply charm his way to peace.
Surreal but there it is.
I'll be frank I am ruminating over whether the media dominated Blue America model can withstand the reward for its folly and if the media would EVER let the fog penetrate as OPFOR potential capability climbed.
The founding surviving may require a schism.
Blue land ain't serious about things he thinks "I got OBL" means "I beat AQ"
Let alone that AQ is 90% likely to simply be a sympton of the OPFOR actual rather than the OPFOR main body.
We are wilfully deluding ourselves as a nation as to how pervasive the enemy network is.
I don't think a red American state would.
I KNOW a Red America would be working HARD on undermining the Arab economy on a strategic scale with energy production.
The American people are NOT serious anymore.
I suspect we are unworthy of our power, and frankly seeing its maluse in the case of Libya whether or not we are all better off if that power is not so easy to hand to a 12 year old in a ~50 something body.

Small caliber sabotage is impossible for the FBI to infiltrate because it doesn't require any particular planning, elaborate bombs, and the targets aren't guarded at all, and most LE agencies will dismiss it as expensive vandalism if you don't bother to leave a calling card.

Walls of food = extra armor that is edible. Though still go with thick soil berms outside to help shield against any radiation. Plus soil and sod is extra armor against incoming bullets. And once the nuclear war is over and its safe to come out. Tote out a few bags of soil, decontaminate a section of the berm, and plant. So easier to guard.

Briefly, an ADR ("American Depository Receipt") means that you buy 100 ADRs in XYZ Ltd. in the UK from (for instance) the Bank of New York (who hold a gazillion of such things), and they hold 3 shares in XYZ Ltd. for each ADR you own. Unlike actually holding 300 shares in XYZ Ltd., the ADR will pay you dividends in dollars and deduct an ADR holding fee. There's also a 15% withholding tax in the UK for dividend payments that you get to take as a credit on your taxes (both ways).
The Readers' Digest version is that you can substitute a 1-time fee for currency conversion (currently at 1%) for an annual ADR fee in perpetuity, so long as you don't convert back into dollars.

I had a section 8 do a midnight move out once. It took about a month before my lawyer gave up trying to contact and said it was OK to drill the lock and break in (she'd rekeyed the place and mine didn't work).
I drilled that sucker, shoved the door open and almost fell down the stairs the stench was so bad. She's left a package of open hamburger on the counter and it was rotten to the max, and the carpets were literally glued to the subfloor with congealed dog piss. After peeling the carpet, it took over a month to get the smell gone. Of course, my fridge was gone.

I now hate both Chris Christie (the Barry hug, the Springsteen crying, the going on MSNBC to establish his bona fides for the progs, and his assholish comment that we have to bring people in--a remark he made when asked about Mitt's comment about Obama's gift-giving.)
I now hate Bobby Jindal for also letting naked ambition go on display as well--bashing Mitt for his "gift" comment.
Funny, just a little over a week ago these two guys agreed that America was going to hell in a handbasket because of the entitlement attitude. Now, that's not a bad thing, they intimate.
Mitt's comment was on target. Stripped of everything else, the main reason a market captitalist lost was because he spoke of creating jobs....which implies that the job creators would have needed people who WANTED jobs...which is not accurate, it turns out. People want stuff. If they think they can take it w/out working for it, that's fine with them.
College kids take out loans...get a big part of them forgiven, people who aren't really disabled on disability, people w/out jobs on extended unemployment, welfare families with homes and food and medical all paid for, and on and on. I think Romney was right and I'm pissed that CC and Jindal are sounding like libs now.

Several cities in the western US are vulnerable to dry winds, a bic lighter, and a jihadist
If the jihadists wanted to really fuck us up, they'd blow a major power grid and watch us kill each other
It would take someone with a mind to understand complicated derivatives, but there could be weak points which would set off counterparty defaults in a domino effect to crash the world economy.
Blowing up aqueducts from the Colorado River to Los Angeles would create a water crisis for 15 million people
Other things would be to counterfeit negotiable bonds or a large amount of cash
Thankfully none of them seem to be smart enough to think this up without tipping off law enforcement ... so far

Financial chaos would be taking out transmission lines to NYC and some substations going into the financial district. Hit the communications' hubs there, and you got some real shit happening.
Look at NYC on 9-11. All the radio and tv stations thought it would be a swell idea to put a master antenna on top of the WTC. A few kept theirs on the Empire State Building. When the tower fell, they were off the air, and NYC residents didn't have access to information they needed. Same shit is happening everywhere around the country. Localities don't want radio/tv towers spread out, they want them centralized. When that happens, problems ensue.

DHS seems to be more focused on cyber terror taking down a grid. Whether Big Sis is focusing on jihadists or survivalists in Idaho is another story.
Jihadists don't tend to think along those lines though, it lacks the outright terror and drama of the 9-11 attacks. OBL was obsessed with airplanes

LOL. Yeah, that's about where I am with this. The State Board of Accountancy requires 4 hours of Ethics every two years.....despite ethics being pretty much the same since Aristotle.
Then, again, accounting ain't what it was. There has been a stealthy government takeover of the industry, and I can't say as I'm terribly pleased with it. As a sterling example, I may present FIN 48 -- an accounting standard ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fin_48 ) that requires that you evaluate your tax expense as if the government knew everything -- even that which you might choose to remain hidden -- and book a liability as if they had such perfect knowledge -- even if you never intend to tell them. But -- oops! -- you just did, there's this thing in your financials.
And to illustrate why this is wrong, wrong, wrong.....let me go back to a piece of personal experience regarding property tax. Now, not many people know or care about this (because you don't have stuff in various jurisdictions that is moving around), but there's an "assessment date" (which is random) for various jurisdictions. The problem is, you can actually have stuff in one jurisdiction for its assessment date, then move it to another for its assessment date, then move it to a third for its assessment date. Doesn't usually happen -- but, when it does, you can end up paying triple property tax on a single piece of gear.
What most places do about this is pay the property tax for all their property at their primary place of business and blow off the rest. The reason that I'm well-aware of this is that Dallas decided to assess all the booth furnishings of a trade show held on their assessment date. Pricks.
But here's the thing with FIN 48 -- you're supposed to imagine that everyone who could possibly tax you will tax you in perfect knowledge of the facts and circumstances....even if it's prohibitively costly to even generate that information. And, to top it off, you get to plant a great, big "audit me here" flag on whatever you discover.
If I had to do it all over again, I might well have chosen a different field.

Hey, I live in Roanoke. We got hit last summer by that huge windstorm that knocked out power for a week. It wasn't the lines in our city that were knocked out, it was the transmission lines feeding the city. Remote locations that are even harder to take the repair equipment into. Do that then damage the substations, even non union employees would take a while to fix it.

From the book Final Warning they describe how the US went into a food panic because of a threatening letter. It seemed someone sent a threat saying Chilean grapes would be poisoned. Which lead to a wholesale scurry to test grapes. And out of all the grapes tested, only two proved to be poisoned. It wasn't the actual danger that paralyzed things, it was the threat of the danger.

Yes, chaos would reign for days, perhaps even weeks. Some of my neighbors might not make it either through failure to plan ahead or attempting to take my preparations away from me and mine when they realize their mistake. I know that I am not alone. There are more prepared people out there than some may suspect, since most of the prepared are very discreet about it.

My wife looks at me like I am crazy when we are at the grocery store or WalMart and I grab some bottled water or canned food that is on sale. After this past summer when we lost power for the week, she now points out sales on those items.
I have also convinced her that buying the dollar store tampons and pads are not for her, but are for trading if need be. Or first aid. But I think she would use them if we weren't able to get her high falutin womenz goods.

Posted by: kbdabear at November 17, 2012 02:00 AM (wwsoB)
It's funny what they don't understand is that most survivalists just want to be left the fuck alone. They don't want to take on the government, as a matter of fact, they would be very happy to not have any government assistance.
Long power outages and disruption to the communications grid scare me a hell of a lot more than planes being hijacked because of what happens to the supply chain with widespread power and communications failures.

Pistol - 100 rnds/weapon as a secondary. 300 rnds as a primary.
Rifle - Bolt Action 100 rnds/weapon. Semi-Auto 500 rnds/weapon.
Posted by: 98ZJUSMC Waiting for the Sun at November 17, 2012 03:30 AM
100 rounds for the bolt seems a bit conservative. As a minimum, I guess, if you have a semi, also. But, get more than 100 if it's your go to rifle. Shit I'd hope to have more than that for something that lasted 30 mins, let alone 30 days if you're holding a spot. Mind you I'm not a particularly good shot anymore, but still, you can go through 100 pretty quick if it's fairly serious. Just asking, anyway. I can see 100 if you're going to be on the move and lugging, though.

Oh, ok... so you're considering something that's section sized, thereabouts. That makes more sense. Do consider though, that resupply may not be on the cards. It NEVER hurts to have more rounds. Even with the support, when the adrenalin gets going, you can fly through what you've got in your pouches pretty quick. But yeah, 100 per, with 12 men and perhaps semi auto support, could work ok.

I have some Federal Fusion for my Saiga (.223) so I'm taking it next time, it's shorter and easier to point than the Mosin and my depth of fire will only be 50-100 yards anyway.
Speaking of ammo preparedness, I have a couple hundred rounds of assorted shotgun shells, 100+ rounds for the Arisaka, 700+ FMJ for the Saiga...and over 1700 for the Mosin (I got three unopened sardine cans plus most of the one that was opened).

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at November 17, 2012 04:27 AM
1700 for the mosin nagant? Nice. You got the 44 carbine? If not, get yerself a bayonet for the 38 or 91/30. Never underestimate the value of a bayonet!

It must be a masochistic streak or something in the genes.
Nasty group of know nothings. Or Think They Know know nothings.
They remind me of guys coming into boot camp who are excited and think they're going to learn How To Be a Hero and shoot and stuff with some pushups but that's okay and be like hanging out with the gang after school but before when you mom tells you you have to be home and someone will break out a harmonica and every one will get all introspective about home and their girl back there.
Booshwah! they get a wide eyed eye opening.
Those jokers would learn real fast about the first time some thief strolls up to them and cold cocks them and takes everything they own. Maybe a some time in an anarchic winner takes all and the loser dies environment might actually do them and this country some good.
MAKE. IT. BURN. LET. IT. BURN. and PISS ON THE ASHES (to make sure there's no dickwads hiding in them)

I do know that blindly adhering to one side or the other without giving coherent thought to the reasons behind the other side of the argument can lead to name calling and hurt feelings.
This is why in most social situations people don't discuss religion or politics if they want to maintain decorum and any degree of self respect.
Here at the HQ, we're more or less anonymous and can more easily back away from an unsustainable position and come back later; no harm done. At a local bar or your neighbor's house, that's harder to do.
I've learned from hard experience that there really aren't any hard and fast answers to most everything. Even science can change long thought firm perceptions overnight due to some serendipitous discovery.
Math is good. 2=2 always equals 4 but that's about the only knowledge we have that is difficult to argue both sides.

I see in the news that labor leaders in Maine are lauding the strike that killed Hostess. That's called doubling down on teh stoopid. I'd link the story, but it's a bunch of leftist/socialist/unionist drivel that we've all seen, and read before.

Not only that...but it drives more jobs out of this country. The company was already on the ropes....that wasn't a secret, the union knew it, but elected to cut their own throats anyway, in a show of 'resolve'. I hope they enjoy rice and dog food chowder, cooked on the exhaust manifold of the cars they'll be living in this winter.
