WRM: Why Americans Support Israel
Short version: Because we're Jacksonians. And we don't see them doing anything differently than we would.
And if you haven't read Mead's seminal essay on the Jacksonian school of American foreign policy yet, remove your shame by going here right now. Coming out of the warring, honor culture of the Scots-Irish, this tradition more than anything else explains why America is not like other countries.
As Israeli airstrikes and naval shells bombarded Gaza this weekend, the world asked the question that perennially frustrates, confuses and enrages so many people across the planet: Why aren't the Americans hating on Israel more?...Commentators around the world grasp at straws in seeking to explain what's going on.
...America is a big country with a lot of things going on, but the real force driving American support for Israeli actions in Gaza isn't Islamophobia, Jewish conspiracies or foam-flecked religious nuts. It's something much simpler: many though not all Americans look at war through a distinctive cultural lens. Readers of Special Providence know that I've written about four schools of American thinking about world affairs; from the perspective of the most widespread of them, the Jacksonians, what Israel is doing in Gaza makes perfect sense. Not only are many Jacksonians completely untroubled by Israel's response to the rocket attacks in Gaza, many genuinely don't understand why the rest of the world is so steamed about Israel-and so angry with the United States.
Jacksonians aren't into the whole 'proportional' war thing. When you're in a fight - especially an existential one with an enemy without honor - all bets are off and annihilation of the enemy until they submit is the expected outcome.
...In any case, when Israel brings the big guns and fast planes against Gaza's popguns and low tech missiles, a great many Americans see nothing but common sense at work. These Americans aren't mad about 'disproportionate' Israeli violence in Gaza because they don't really accept the concept of proportionality in war. They think that if you have jus ad bellum, and rocket strikes from Gaza are definitely that, you get something close to a blank check when it comes to jus in bello.
...Far from seeing Israel's use of overwhelming force against limited provocation as harsh or immoral, many Americans see it as courageous and wise. It strengthens the sense that in a wacky world where a lot of foreigners are hard to understand, the Israelis are honest, competent and reliable friends - good people to have on your side in a tight spot.
Virginia Now Grading Student Test Scores on a Racial Curve
Thanks to an NCLB waiver whether you pass or not in VA now depends on your ethnicity:
As part of Virginia's waiver to opt out of mandates set out in the No Child Left Behind law, the state has created a controversial new set of education goals that are higher for white and Asian kids than for blacks, Latinos and students with disabilities.
...Here's what the Virginia state board of education actually did. It looked at students' test scores in reading and math and then proposed new passing rates. In math it set an acceptable passing rate at 82 percent for Asian students, 68 percent for whites, 52 percent for Latinos, 45 percent for blacks and 33 percent for kids with disabilities.
About the only good thing coming out of this clusterfuck is that they're finally being honest about their bigotry of low expectations.
The US Gets an Improved Sniper Rifle
Semi-automatic and based on the AR-10 the M110 SASS is meant for sharpshooters rather than dedicated sniper units.
The U.S. Army is introducing a shorter and lighter version of its M110 SASS (Semi-Automatic Sniper System). SASS has been in use, first in Iraq and then Afghanistan, for four years. The CSASS (Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System) will use a collapsible stock and a removable flash suppressor to get the length down to 91 cm (36 inches) long and the weight under 4.1 kg (9 pounds) unloaded....The M110 was not itself a big technological breakthrough. It is based on the older AR-10 rifle. The U.S. Navy had already been buying a similar weapon, the SR25 (also known as the Mk11) since the early 1990s.
All of these are 7.62mm semi-automatic sniper rifles based on basic designs developed by former marine Gene Stoner in the 1950s. This led to the M-16 and many other rifles. The basis for the M-16 was the AR-15, and a 7.62mm version of that weapon was called the AR-10. About half the parts in the SR25 are interchangeable with those in the M-16.
Stranger than Fiction: The Real Belloq/Indiana Jones
Austrian-born Gerardo Reichel-Dolmatoff was a legend in South American anthropology. But it turns out he was also a Nazi and a member of the French resistance:
In many ways, the classic image of the anthropologist was shaped by Reichel-Dolmatoff. He lived with remote communities to learn the language and worldviews of previously unknown societies. He trekked through jungles and participated in the hallucinatory ceremonies of local religions. He pioneered the archaeology not of the giant civilization, but of the lost peoples of specific valleys and mountain ridges....It turns out that Reichel-Dolmatoff was a member of both the Nazi Party and the SS, in the personal guard of Hitler himself and a participant in Gestapo death squads. He later trained guards in the Dachau Concentration Camp.
In light of his subsequent life in Colombia, it would be easy to chalk this up as another bitter tale of a Nazi who escaped justice to the anonymity of Latin America, but Reichel-Dolmatoff did not seem to make the typical Nazi exit from Europe. He had what is vaguely described as a 'mental crisis' in 1936 and was declared unfit for the SS and publicly expelled from the Nazi party.
Curiously, he turned up immediately afterwards working for the anti-Hitler resistance in France and continued to support the French resistance after he arrived in Colombia in 1939, to the point where he was eventually awarded the National Order of Merit by the French president.

Doing pretty well, now that hockey season has begun. We are still losing the house, but slowly, because Citimortgage can't find their asses with both hands, so we haven't been put out on the street just yet. Dad is up to two miles a day jogging now, with just a slight hitch in his giddyup--we should be so lucky in our 80's. My beagle burglar repellent seems to be working since the neighbors have had "visitors" and we have not, and my boy is up to 6 goals this season, which is also his age, so I'm one proud mama. You know the difference between a grizzly bear and a hockey mom? Of course you do.

I'm in Indiana and I stay indoors a lot as a public service to the fine folk of Greater Indy metro.
No I was busy with the election, and trying to get calm enough to directly volunteer. I made some calls but nowhere near the volume I did in '08. I've been in a rage about the election and electorate for about 12 years now almost.
Time to move on and lose myself in work I can silently build a better tomorrow with.

Looking at downticket vote totals, I have no doubt at all that there was a measurable amount of fraud in Palm Beach and Broward. I noticed an ~2,000 vote discrepancy across several downticket races that was consistent and inexplicable.
I have no doubt there were some extra 2nd and 3rd cards handed out in Palm Beach that produced that 2k variation.

Two thoughts:
1. The Republican Party ought to be running against this sort of thing, constantly.
2. Asians are the most discriminated against, but still vote Democratic even more than Hispanics do.
The theory that Asians are natural conservatives is not looking good; they've obviously accepted a place in the anti-White electoral coalition that liberals are always building, and even being victimized themselves by the racial grievance machine hasn't changed their minds.

On Tuesday, the board passed a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, it wants 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. It used to be the ones who beat up teachers and pulled knives on them were packed away to "reform school", but that's not the case anymore. Unless they're doing major felonies, they stay mainstreamed.
They don't want to pay for special needs teachers with a class of say 6 students. The severe behavior problems need to be removed entirely.

Wrong. About 5500 were Teamsters, about 6500 were Bakery Union; total union was around 12-13k of the total 18.5k.
My numbers are from memory but should be close enough for argument's sake. It's true that the Bakers union folk are the ones responsible for killing the goose though.

I place them into the "very technically proficient yet soul-less" camp. I greatly appreciate the capabilities of several of the guitarists who've played with them over the years, but the final product is incredibly bland.

I have had the good fortune to inherit a Camp Marlin .45acp carbine.
Question: When you pull the bolt back when the gun is unloaded (no magazine) should you be able to pull the trigger (in Fire mode, not Safe mode) and hear a click (not a bang) such as you would with an unloaded semi auto pistol or does it require a round in the chamber?
Mine does not do that. Taking it to the range tomorrow. I think I may need to take it to a gunsmith.

My mom's been an RN my whole life so I tend to assume competence on the part of nurses until proven otherwise. I don't think it's race, I think they must be teaching wrong or something because a couple of John's nurses were frighteningly incompetent (as in it was very clear that they had made *no* effort to read the chart at all) and they were very white.

Actually -- true story, here.....bit of a digression....
When I was growing up, my mom was a college professor of mathematics in the LA area, and ended up on the textbook review committee....so, for bathroom reading, we always had stacks of textbooks (mainly science) lying around as "evaluation copies". Now, you wouldn't necessarily know this if you only saw the one text that your instructor ended up using, but there are tropes that get used over-and-over-and-over-and-over in science textbooks -- and, if you have multiple versions of this year's potential science text in your hall bathroom, you see bundles of them.
And one such recurring theme was that almost every physics textbook had an early chapter about "phases of matter" that opened with a beautiful detail picture of snowflakes. And I'd look at that and go "gawsh", 'cause snow was an extremely rare event in Southern California and tended to happen in the middle of the night, leaving half-melted drifts by morning when I got to see them (I have just turned 50, and I've still never seen snow actually falling).
And I looked at those perfect pictures and tried to square it with the piles of slush and thought "of course, these 3-inch snowflakes come hurtling out of the sky like the shuri-ken on Kung-Fu and shatter on impact with the ground, creating the white icy slush I see when I go outside." I didn't actually know how small snowflakes really were until I went to college.

Another SoCal native. The first time I saw snow falling, rather than driving up tot he mountains while it was already in place, was while passing through NYC for 48 hours on the way to a job in Europe.
Last year, here in Castaic, was the first time in my life I was able to stand in front of my residence and see snow coming down.

When I popped out, fresh from the oven, I had red hair. My mom still has a lock of it (I think she keeps it around in case she ever needs to make a voodoo doll of me).
Then as a younger adult, I had some red in my beard. Now it's just gray.

I need to arrange the details with my friend here to get some more practice and pick a gun. Having been to the range really helps in figuring out what I need to look for. I was really happy when he told me that it was possible to get a loader for the (semi-auto?) since finding out I wasn't strong enough to load it was pretty worrying.

Polliwogette, there's a trick to loading the semi-auto. Don't try to pull the slide back, just hold on to it and push the frame forward with your strong hand (the one your trigger finger is on). Push hard enough to pull the slide out of your weak hand.

Apparently I'm a super wimp 'cause PW let me try his revolver and I almost couldn't pull the trigger. I guess I really need to work on some hand strengthening exercises. The higher capacity of the semi-auto was a plus as well since otherwise it seems like half the practice time is spent reloading.

Proportionality in war means that you only use the force necessary to accomplish the military objective. If you need to bomb a neighborhood because the enemy has stationed rocket launchers there and is attacking you with them, you bomb it. Proportionality means you don't use any more bombs than you need to use to destroy the launchers.
Discrimination, by the way, means that you discriminate between military and civilian targets, only shooting at the military ones. However, it also means that your troops wear uniforms that identify them as military targets and that you don't deploy your troops where they would draw fire to civilian targets. So, putting your rocket launchers in a neighborhood is a violation of the principle of discrimination.
