So how about a palate cleanser of....
Some Juicy Liberal Schadenfreude: Peace Corp Guilt
Esther Katcoff is a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay and apparently a well-meaning, compassionate person who just wants to help people. And I think you're all aware of the magnitude of harm this kind of person can inflict on those whose lives they decide to improve. But this isn't about them - it's about Esther and her guilt problem.
Because being a bien pensant liberal means feeling guilty about everything - even guilt itself. And it turns out that helping others is really all about you and your feelings....of guilt.
Read and savor the sweet, sweet tears of indulgent, narcissistic liberal self-flagellation here.
People all over the world are dying. They are suffering and we are watching. It is immoral, says Peter Singer, not to do everything in our power to help them. iPods, spankin' new cars, vacations to Disney World... we spend money on these things instead of paying for life-saving surgeries, feeding hungry children or investing in third world economies. According to Singer, the fact that we don´t need to watch the poor suffer doesn't change the fact that they are drowning and we know it. And we let them....But what to do about all that? Well, I started by not buying a new iPod after my old-school Nano broke. But would that help the hungry children of Africa? I couldn't just donate the money saved. I was an Urban Studies major. I knew about the complications of development work, the band-aid solutions, the causes that just sound good, the charity that unmotivates the beneficiaries, the money that doesn't always reach the ground. The only way, I told myself, the only way is to understand completely what the people need to fish themselves out of their lake. Then I could support them with my iPod money.
I tell people I joined the Peace Corps to understand what it means to be poor, but that's just part of the story. I joined the Peace Corps to figure out how to escape the guilt of having so much while other people have so little.
But alas even working in the Peace Corps did not fix her guilt problem:
All this seems to me a pretty depressing lose-lose situation. Either I ignore the hunger of a child, or I create jealousy amongst her peers. And either way she will be hungry again next year after I go back to America. How do I cope with all of this burden? How do any of us cope?I feel like the go-to answer is to try drop it behind somewhere on our two year journey. Just throw that heavy sack in the arroyo. Remind yourself of the hours of work you put into that project, the tears you shed as you squatted homesick in your host family's overflowing latrine. The opportunity cost of doing the Peace Corps, all those tens of thousands of dollars you like to think you could have made if you were employed these two years in the U.S.
But unfortunately, that reasoning doesn't do it for me. Nor does the argument that extreme wealth needs to exist because people need a goal to strive for. I mean, what would Maria say if I told her I'm going to the Lady Gaga concert in Asuncion so that she can strive to have enough money to do that too some day? She doesn't get enough to eat, can't read and lives in a wooden shack with no water.
So how did she finally overcome her tragic guilt? By redistributing it of course.
For me, this is the solution to the heap-ton of Peace Corps guilt clamping down on my shoulders.
Goal 3: to help people back home understand human need and realize their responsibility to throw that lifesaver. In a sustainable way, of course. Because the guilt that we are allowing people to drown is not mine. It is ours.
Well I for one am sad that we live in a world where thousands of people suffer from First World guilt everyday but aren't lucky enough to have an entire village of Paraguayans to help them work out their guilt issues.
The Fiscal Cliff Through the Eyes of a Small Business Owner
The Wall Street law firm Davis Polk has created a new business of simply keeping track of the seemingly infinite number of rules that will need to be written to complete the process of financial regulation put into place by Dodd-Frank. Sadly, only 33% of the 398 required rulemakings have been finalized. (Only 265 rules to go!) Another 33% have yet to have even been proposed.
...What are we doing as a company in light of this uncertainty? We've put on hold business expenses short of pencils, and any capital spending we were considering, including an update of the men's bathroom some have begun to call "the latrine." Instead of calling clients and focusing on our research, we are scheduling, probably in vain, conference calls (read fees) with our attorneys and accountants to try to create contingencies against potentially bad outcomes for us in the tax code. It has forced us to ask ourselves questions that seem at odds with economic growth, like, are there any unintended consequences of employing more than 50 people?
Meanwhile the Democrats are rubbing their hands in glee since taxes will go up and defense spending will be cut without any action at all from Congress. Oh and guess who will get the blame for it all:
The Republican Party took the rap for the debt ceiling and is under suspicion for the fiscal cliff. A new Washington Post-Pew Research poll has 53 percent of Americans ready to blame Republicans if America actually goes over the edge and only 29 percent planning to point fingers at President Barack Obama
On the other hand what people say they're going to do and what they actually do are not always the same. But if you're gonna be demonized anyway, you might as well be demonized for principle.
It's always sexist to question a female administration official except when it isn't.
What is obvious to anyone with an IQ above 80 is that Susan Rice either lied about the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attacks on the consulate in Benghazi or allowed herself to be used to transmit other people's lies about the attack. Questioning whether, due to this fact, she is qualified for the position of top diplomat of the most powerful nation on Earth is neither sexist nor is it racist.
Condoleezza Rice was accused of lying by many Democrats; she was accused so many times that it is now accepted wisdom on the Left that she did, in fact, lie. As a result, many on your side of the political spectrum have decided that this accepted wisdom gives them license to shamelessly use against her some of the nastiest racist and sexist language ever witnessed in the history of political rhetoric in this country.
...The fact is that the non-existent, imagined sexism and racism against Susan Rice from the Right is unacceptable to the Left while the Left's own very real sexism and racism against Condoleezza Rice was, is, and always will be acceptable, and so it goes with every single instance of a "strong woman of color" who strays from the Democratic plantation.

The Atlantic Covers Up the Huma Abedin-Muslim Brotherhood Connection
I've been informed it's un-American to be concerned over Huma's mother and brother's connections to the Muslim Brotherhood or her membership in the same organization as an Al Qaeda fundraiser. So maybe the Atlantic was being extra, super patriotic by avoiding these details and making her relationship seem more tenuous that it is.
Update on the Walker vs Kimberlin Case
John Hoge's latest news in the Virginia case of Aaron Walker v. Brett Kimberlin, et al., is that Walker's attorney Dan Backer has filed motions for default judgments against Kimberlin's co-defendants Ron Bryanert and Neal Rauhauser. Backer is requesting that the court in Prince William County schedule the hearing on this motion for Dec. 4, the same date as a hearing on Backer's motion for procedural sanctions against Kimberlin.
Furthermore, Backer has filed notice that Brett Kimberlin has breached the court's order on the sealed discovery for the fifth time.

All Your Thanksgiving Cooking Questions Answered
If turkey is roasted well in advance of guests arriving, or there is a delay, what's the best way to re-heat? To what temperature?-SaqibSaab
If tented with foil and left in a warm place, a turkey should stay warm for at least a couple hours-at least internally. The real danger is the skin getting soggy and the surfaces getting cold. The best way to fix this? Just pop it in a 550°F oven for 7 to 15 minutes until the skin is crisp and piping hot again. The rest should take care of itself.

Women Spend More Time Checking Out Other Women Than Men
Science:
Half of the 2,000 women polled by online retailer Swimwear 365 said they 'enjoy' comparing themselves to women they work with, befriend or pass in the street. And the beach is the place where most female ogling goes on, with 80 per cent of those polled saying they love having a good look at other women when they are sunbathing.
...On a day to day basis 42 per cent of ladies said they dress to impress their female peers and not the opposite sex - and even on big nights out its girls they are trying to impress not men.

I have an 8-year-old car. My last vacation was to Branson freaking Missouri. I don't have an iPod, or a Kindle, or an HDTV, or a Blue Ray, or a smart phone. I have a house and insurance and am uncommonly blessed, but I'm not going to be made to feel guilty by this privileged little girl.
I also actually live in a city--why do I suspect that Little Miss Urban Studies Major doesn't?
WTF does an urban studies major do, anyway, besides take my order at McDonald's?

Ugh. That's why you have so many women walking around with choppy haircuts and hair like the mother on "That 70's Show". Let's impress the girls! Dress to impress men unless you want tacos for dinner every night.

"The Peace Corps has been working in Paraguay since 1967, and the country is one of the oldest continuously operating posts in the Peace Corps. After the government of Paraguay and the Peace Corps signed a joint agreement on November 4, 1966, the first Volunteers arrived in 1967 to work in agricultural extension in rural areas. Before long, projects were also established in the health and education sectors. Nearly 3,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in Paraguay since 1967, and now 40 years later, an average of 90 Volunteers arrive annually."

Today, approximately 160 Volunteers are working in the six major sectors of agriculture, education, environment, health, small business development, and brain washing urban youth development.

That's well put. Even though I've tried to cut off all contact with the outside world, sometimes I just can't keep my head down enough, and end up going round-ampersand-round with a handful of these pitiable fucks. The enviros are a special favorite.
Once when they 'literally' came to my door, and initial tete-a-tete revealed their irredeemably high thinking, I more or less took one by the earlobe and gave him the grand tour of the estate, documenting (for his edification) every energy-saving, recycling, waste-avoiding strategem at work here going back to my garndfather's day, complete with dates of implementation, many of them before his parents were born.
He left shaking his head (trying to get circulation back in his earlobe, I guess), but it wasn't satisfying. Like calling out any selfish born-yesterday twit, I was just as pissed off after improving his outlook as if I'd just decked him, or thrown a rock or something. What bothers you is that they're still out there, still doing their harm to the young, the halt, the lame, and the blind.
Well, that, and it turned out the little bastard was getting paid by PIRG to collect petition signatures.

I had a similar experience with the slovenly, brainwashed Greenpeace losers last summer...brainless douche says something about wasting resources...I say 'You're working against people who provide those resources, but let me ask you this: can you provide me with my time you just wasted, you douche? didn't think so.' It was great...I hope that he is in business school now because of that public and embarrassing humiliation. I'm helping like that.

Speak for yourself. Having been born in Venezuela and seen the fatalism, passivity, self-destruction, and tribalism of the Third World, I feel no guilt whatsoever about the self-imposed plight of most people on the planet.
The Third World has to work out its own problems. No amount of money is going to change cultures that enshrine and reward backwardness. The Venezuelans enthusiastically elected and re-elected the guy who's driving them further and further into poverty, and they did so because he appealed to their tribalism and promised them free stuff.
My favorite statistic about the Congo: There are 900 ethnic groups there, and they're all at war with each other. My great-aunt had a caretaker from Kenya. All she talked about was how much she hated the dirty Kikuyu. This was an educated woman who spoke perfect English and was a devout Christian, and every conversation came back to how much she hated the Kikuyu.
My friend Nick finally said to her, "Look around you, Ruth. See any Kikuyu? You're not in Kenya anymore. Nobody here except for you gives a damn about the Kikuyu. Why are still talking about them? You left Kenya fifteen years ago."
Made no difference. After a week of sulking, Ruth starting raving about the Kikuyu again.
What leftists refuse to accept is that the Third World is hopeless. Tribalism makes it impossible for them to improve themselves. By their actions they prove to be unworthy of civilized peoples' concerns, so the First World needs to put them out of our minds.
The best Third Worlders immigrate. African immigrants and Afro-Caribbean immigrants here have a higher average individual income than native-born white Americans.
If people want to improve, they generally do. If they don't improve, it's usually because they can't or won't.

The race we are watching is between two sides of the Progressive State. On one side you have the coercive end of the State which uses the threat of financial damage or ruin for non-compliance. On the other end you have the financiers of the State funding the project by stealing wealth from every American who has any.
Progressives depend on the dollar in their mechanics of force all the while they are destroying the value of the dollar. At some point in the near future they are going to devalue the dollar to the point where their mechanism no longer works.
Then they will either try to replace regulatory force with violence or, as I suspect, their precious State will crumble.

Two best pieces of writing about the Peace Corps mentality I've run across are "The Ugly American," in which the ugly guy is really the hero and really helping people, made into a fairly shitty movie and a universally misunderstood phrase, and "Don Quixote USA," out of print but available in the Readers Digest condensed version, so funny it hurts, and made into an absolutely shitty movie by Woody Allen who obviously didn't get the joke.

But lasting poverty is generally caused by the government of the country - compare resource rich North Korea with resource poor South Korea.
Looking down the road, Kiva's effect on long term poverty would be minimal. However, a nation can always choose to step away from socialism...presuming the socialists don't have all the guns at least.
So considering that, which are the third world countries that truly undercapitalized, as opposed to deliberately lingering in squalor? In these countries I would expect the effect of micro loans to be phenomenal.

Drugs should be legal. If someone wants to self destruct, not my problem.
Abortion should be between a woman and her conscience. If it was up to Republicans, contraceptives like the morning after pill would be banned.t
The Illegal Immigration is just van excuse to hate foreigners.Hey 65% of Americans support a legalization process, you have lost this argument.
Marriage should be a state issue. You don't like Gay Marriage, well don't get one.
There is a Authoritarian streak to the Republican party. That is why no one belives the small government propaganda.

I'm set to lose for another 2 decades mentally. I've come to peace with that. It is the minimum that it will take before libbies realize that Progressivism=Totalitarianism and start to reject it, and you dingbat libertarians finally crack a philosophy book and realize that an amoral society cannot be free. That your equation for society doesn't even work in theory let alone practice.
You have fun riding the wave down. I'm personally going to enjoy watching it burn. And watching the libbies subjugate the Libertarians. I know it's coming. And I don't care enough to try and stop it anymore.

Nope. IF YOU WERE A REAL LIBERTARIAN. You would stridently INSIST that the Government not be involved in the recognition, sanctioning, incentivising, regulating, administering, and defining of "marriage" at all,That the word "marriage" not even exist as a state defined term and that people should be free to define their relationships however they wish without interference of government rules.
You are outed prog. No real libertarian thinks that the government should control marriage at any level.

Its almost like they hoped he would lose so they could have a reason to still be so fucking angry at everything!!
Have you noticed how depressed Obama and the rest of the Democrat politicians seem?
Their followers are jubilant, but the people in charge don't seem all that happy that they won. In Burma--the first visit there by a U.S. president--Obama fucked up Aung San Suu Kyi's name every time he said it and used the term "Myanmar," which is against American policy. He phoned in his performance there, like his mind was a million miles away.
The Democrats are a dog who chases cars and then finally catches one. What does he do with it?
I think they're starting to face reality, and they don't like it one bit. Today I heard Karl Levin give Obama credit for the Iron Dome, even though the Israelis began developing it in February of 2007.
Levin himself didn't even sound his heart was in it, and he didn't seem to think anyone else would believe him, either.

They always feel bad either guilty or angry or whatever they are supposed to feel at the moment. They can never be happy. If they were they'd get to liking it and abandon progressivism alltogether. So prog leaders teach, if you feel happy, you shouldn't, because their is some "greater good" you are still not accomplishing, and other people are suffering for it. You by extension are a bad person for being happy. Read the opening topic of the ONT for a great example. The only thing that helps her assuage her guilty feelings, is getting others to feel as terrible as she does.

I think Obama pretty much lives in the present. He wanted to win in order to deny Romney the presidency, because all reports are that he hates Romney personally, but now that he's been reelected, it's a letdown because nothing's changed.
He also got 9 million fewer votes than last time, which has got to hurt, and now that he's safely reelected the press is starting to spill the beans about the horrible shape we're in.

Man up, Nancy. The Libertarian party is the party of standing in the corner and sneering at those actually doing something imperfectly but at least trying to accomplish something other than an air raid siren level whine.
The Libertarians have become as bad as any leftists in their pursuit of an unachievable utopia that is just a variant on what the leftist dream of creating.

OK, confession time -- I have not the faintest f***in' clue how to play the game. But it's always been "the great white whale" on the horizon. Different decks, weird rules, odd names for things......and a touch of the old school. I imagine that it'd be fun, but I'm a little wary from my experience with Hearts......coming in as the bf to a family that played regularly, and constantly getting slammed (not the BH, years prior).

The English language and having been a prior British colony, that's what. If you got those two things, chances are you're better off than your neighbor nations who where someone else's colony or don't speak English.

The scientific priesthood stands on the shoulders of those who came before them though, and maintains the core.
There is no priesthood for social and political lessons though...at least none the unwashed (apparently) care to believe or trust.
30 years ago, I would have probably said the USA as a nation was such a social/political priesthood, but today, its been proven that I would have been wrong. All it took was one generation for 200+ years of lessons to be discarded/forgotten.

The priesthood is there. The administration is rife with heirs and proteges of a previous generation of those priests. Axelrod and Jarret are just two.
The difference is that in science bad ideas that cannot withstand testing are cast aside and replaced with better ideas based on more complete data and testing.
In the priesthood of leftism there is no test whose result matter longer than the memory of the electorate, which is brief at best. Thus to a budding leftist Marx is as fresh and current as the latest teenage vampire opus.

Stone tablets were durable. Low information density, but persistent. Even papyrus and non-acid papers were pretty persistent and durable when kept dry.
A billion+ looters/sackers versus fragile media will do far more damage than a few hundred thousand Vandals/Visigoths did in the past.
What does 200 year old polycarbonate plastic look and behave like? Nobody knows. The oldest stuff we got is only about 50 years old. A lot of the synthetic rubbers used in recent years de-polymerize over time and turn into sticky black goop in time frames where natural rubbers would still be viable. I've seen this a lot in disk drives and foam air seals.
Civilization has a big problem. A lot of "modern "stuff" isn't going to make it long enough to serve as a core.

My brother is a radical leftist. In my experience, they feel it isn't enough that they win. They have to convert you to their way of thinking even if you've lost the battle or even the war.
They simply can't sleep at night knowing that somewhere out there are people who disagree with them. It infuriates them, because they've made their political beliefs their identity.
By disagreeing with them, you're negating their very selves. You're murdering them, in their minds. Your disagreement poses an existential threat to them, so they hate and fear you the way people hate and fear cancer or nuclear war.
Even if you have no power ever again, they'll still hate you. They could lock you all up in the deepest, darkest dungeons, but it would eat at them knowing that although you're in prison forever, you still disagree with them.
Like in Orwell's 1984, they must convert you to their way of thinking even if they kill you five seconds later. They can't let you escape by dying. You must be made to agree with them at all costs.
My brother can't let me have my own beliefs. For twenty years he's tried to convert me. I see him only once a year, but he still can't resist trying to argue politics. It makes him hysterical when I demolish all his points with ease. Still, he won't give up.

Meese! That was his name. I couldn't remember it. I recognized that prissy mode of expression, with the lack of contractions and the bizarre, stilted, English-as-a-second-language feel. And of course the arbitrary capitalization.
I didn't go check, but I read on another Web site that Charles Johnson has gone full circle and is now trying to debunk the debunking of Paliwood propaganda. His stated rationale is that anything conservatives report is a lie, so he's been twisting himself into knots trying to explain how showing kids killed in Syria and passing them off as Palestinians isn't really false.
Or showing a Palestinian being carried into the hospital and then two minutes later the same guy carrying someone else into the hospital isn't "conclusive."
The Swiss psychiatrist Alice Miller noted that the final step in all terminal mental illness is antisemitism. For some reason all mentally ill people hate the Jews. One way to tell that someone has genuinely lost his mind--I mean in terms of actual, diagnosable psychiatric illness--is when he develops an irrational hatred of Jews.

I just said I knew a real blockhead who blew a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because he was too arrogant and delusional to recognize that he'd get nowhere in the music industry on his own.
Somehow he found out what I'd written and was quite put out. He must've told one of his friends about blowing off Galas and then that person read what I wrote on the music forum and told my brother.
He could've been onstage with this:

My reaction is mixed. In some key ways, our country was different for the better, but our ancestors had to deal with their own set of problems. E.g., just think about how much and in what ways the world had changed between 1905 (second glass negative) and 1925 (third glass negative). We are familiar with how that story ends but they had to live it.

Demonic possession is real, in my opinion. In Tokyo in 1986, I was standing on a train platform talking to a Canadian friend, when suddenly I became terrified of the Japanese man standing in front of me. His back was toward me.
I was hit by waves of the worst fear and revulsion of life, and the guy slowly turned around to face me. The only way I can describe his face is that it looked concave instead of convex. It was sticking out like a normal face, but at the same time it looked like a bowl.
His expression was a combination of glee and total misery. He looked sheepish, ashamed, happy, and utterly filthy, like he was made of shit. I'm absolutely positive that he was possessed.
Since I was raised a Catholic, and since there's no such thing as an ex-Catholic, I started praying as hard as could, silently telling him to get away from me because I rejected him and everything he stood for. I asked God for strength. The bowl-faced man slowly turned away from me and then walked off down the platform and disappeared into the crowd. My Canadian friend didn't notice anything and kept yapping away the whole time.

My brother's almost fifty and playing the folk circuit. He does "house concerts" to audiences of eight. He's all over YouTube, and each of his videos have an average of eighty-six views. Some of them have been up there for five years.
It would be like me blowing off Stephen King because I hate his writing. If Stephen King asked me to collaborate on a book with him, I'd do it for free and sing his praises to the entire mainstream media for the next thirty years.
But I still hate his writing.

Interesting.
There's going to be lots of laws being modified eventually over pot. DUI laws, for an easy example. Here's the rub -- MJ effects (stoned) are relatively short lived, somewhere in the range of 4 hours or so. But THC can reside in your system for upwards of 30 days in detectable amounts.

If my brother had recorded with Diamanda--she loves his slide guitar--she would've introduced him to all manner of people, from JPJ to you name it. She loves helping struggling musicians, which is why she made the offer to my unknown brother in the first place.
He thought she was beneath him, so he never called her after she gave him her number. It was a firm job offer for an album she was doing.
Two years later my brother is still playing his house concerts for eight people, but now he's two years older. He wants to be a star, so he can't bear to play second banana to anyone else.

My father has a similar story about an albino that crossed his path in New Orleans when he was there on business in the late 80s. I don't remember much about it except that he needed to talk to our pastor about it, and I had nightmares for weeks over the story.
A friend of mine and I have both had what he has since explained to me as sleep paralysis-where you think you've woken but can't move-since college. He tells me 'fixing' a bout of it is as easy as remembering what it is and choosing to go back (fully) to sleep. Which worked for me a couple of times.
I bring it up because part of my experience with it was the certainty of a malevolent presence his lacked. The times I choose to go back to sleep *it* didn't seem to be there. But that aspect, when it was there, got worse despite my thinking I knew what was going on. There was something like ringing in my ears that got louder over the years too.
Until, much like you, it occurred to me to pray for protection. A simple desperate prayer was enough to end the 'dream' and after doing that a second time, I haven't had an attack in years.
At least not that I remember.

For the dessert, it'd be great to bring a creme brulee.....but I don't think you have the time to prepare. So you might try something like http://tinyurl.com/c99s9dt -- seriously, wine jello with interesting additions, served in wine glasses, is REALLY EASY, and WAY COOL.

From what I understand, evil (in the form of these entities) has to be invited in. If you categorically reject it, then it has no power over you.
Apparently you can't be possessed unless you agree to it on some level. The book Hostage to the Devil, by the late priest Father Malachi Martin, is one of the most hair-raising books about demonic possession ever written.
Interestingly, he said that Catholic priests could only do a set number of exorcisms in their lives because having contact with demons damages your soul even when you're there to do battle with them, not embrace them. If you went over that limited number of exorcisms, you were in danger of losing your soul.
On the other hand, Pim van Lommel, M.D., is a Dutch cardiologist who studied near-death experiences for thirty years and wrote the book Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience. His conclusion--from listening to his patients--is that while some souls go to hell, they can get out by acknowledging the wrong they committed and sincerely repenting.
I don't see Ted Bundy ever sincerely repenting. In fact, Dr. van Lommel said that his research shows him that some people choose to remain evil forever and never get out of the dark, empty place that is hell.

Untrue. Illegal workers can disappear and nobody makes a fuss. The person doesn't even legally exist and was working under a fake SSN, so if there were no witnesses to his little accident he becomes a cornerstone of the community.
Having an underclass handy has always had its uses. Who better to use for an already illegal enterprise? The situation is such that the authorities can only guess at the numbers.

Work on that literacy thing. What is untrue is your claim that in the absence of government meddling there is no market for illegal alien labor.
That is simply not the case. We outlawed slavery a while back. Persons who have no legal existence in the US but are here none the less are ideal target for those for who canning an employee doesn't mean firing them. It means putting them in supermarkets across America. (Hat tip to Richard Pryor.)
Uncontrolled borders provides a steady flow of humans to mistreat in way that go far beyond low wages.

Acknowledgement is difficult enough, true repentance...
I can't even say!
What happens to those who are *incapable* of fully knowing what they are doing.
People like Jared Loughner for instance?
Well, but Loughner was found competent. He knew what was right and what was wrong.
Psychopaths, sociopaths, schizophrenics, and people with narcissistic personality disorder almost always know right from wrong. They just don't care. But they always try to cover their tracks, hide, and get away with what they do. If they genuinely didn't know right from wrong, they wouldn't try to hide their crimes.
I think everyone knows the difference between right and wrong. We all have evil thoughts, but most of us don't act on them. Some people are found not competent by the law, but that's always subjective. I don't know if there are any people who actually don't know the difference between right and wrong.
Some people suffer organic brain damage that prevents them from restraining themselves. This guy, for example, is always in trouble with the law.
http://tinyurl.com/c3ey7dr
Presumably, if we have souls that are freed when our bodies die, the soul will no longer be subject to the infirmities of the body. This guy's soul will no longer be influenced by his damaged brain, and though he'll still have the negative impulses we all have, he'll regain the impulse control that was taken from him when he lost half his brain. He can't really be held responsible for his actions if the brain matter that controls impulse was removed. Personally, I think he should locked up forever, but the courts disagree with me.
Maybe when we die, we're confronted with evidence of what we did in our lives, and if we're shocked by and sorry for the evil we committed in life, we go on to the next level or the reward or whatever. Those of us who are indifferent or who refuse to feel remorse go to the dark place, either forever or until they repent.
I've known several people who I'm convinced will never repent, no matter what. Regardless of the cost, they simply refuse to admit that they ever did anything wrong. My father is one such person, and my sister is another. And they've both committed terrible, unforgivable sins if not actual crimes.
I'd hate to be in their shoes, karma-wise.

I dispute that notion.
The brain could be simply the machine that allows the three-dimensional, earthly functioning of the free will, emotions, personality, energy, and thought processes that constitute the soul.
Think of it this way: It's not that the brain creates the chemical reactions that people mistake for the soul, but rather that the brain and its chemical reactions are the means by which the soul is able to be manifested in the earthly realm.
A soul by itself can't exist in the earthly realm because it's not tangible. So, first it needs a housing. Secondly, it needs a process by which the free will, emotions, personality, energy, and thought processes can control that housing so that the soul can function in the earthly realm.
The solution is a brain that produces chemicals. The brain is a vehicle, transmitter, and governor all in one, but it's separate from the soul in the way that the eye is separate from vision. The eye is the means through which vision is manifested. The eye doesn't create vision; it channels it through a biomechanical process. Vision would exist even if there were no eyes. We know that because when we venture into areas inhabited only by eyeless creatures, we can still see.
As intangible energy, the soul couldn't function in the earthly realm unless it had both a housing and a biomechanical process that would channel the energy of the soul and operate the housing.
The brain and the chemicals aren't what make us human; they're the processes by which that which makes us human--our soul--is able to function in this particular plane of existence.

That's what I think, too. I don't believe that there's Someone sitting at a judge's bench who points a mighty finger at us and says, "You, sir, have sinned against me!" and pulls a lever that opens a trapdoor and drops us into eternal flames.
I believe that the kind of person we are determines the passages that are open to us. People blinded by hate, rage, anger, selfishness, sadism, arrogance, and dishonesty are simply unable to perceive the passages that are visible to those who haven't given in to total negativity and destructiveness. When you're distracted, you can't see or think clearly. You're more apt to get lose your way.
I believe that hell is an absence. It's a place of nothingness, darkness, sorrow, loneliness, and pain. It's like being lost in the forest.

That's the fallacious argument called "begging the question." The thing to be proved is used as one of your assumptions.
According to you, the brain has made the decision before the soul has, but my argument is that the biomechanical decision-making process entails the so-called time lag because that's how the machine works.
The jalopy body that houses the soul chugs along, the brain laying the biochemical groundwork for what evolves after eight seconds (or whatever) into a conscious decision. Since the time lag isn't felt by the soul, in essence it doesn't exist.
The inherent physical limitations of the neurons and chemicals require that the process begin long before the consciousness is aware of it.
You argument doesn't actually make much sense, because you're saying that the brain is autonomously making a decision that the consciousness later catches up to. If that were the case, what would be the biological function of consciousness? Why would we evolve individual thought? It would make much more biological sense for us to be like termites and have no individual sense of self.
If it's all just the brain secreting chemicals and making decisions on its own, consciousness is a hindrance.
you've just stated that because we have eyes, we can see where creatures that don't have eyes can't, that means that we could still see even if we didn't have eyes.
No, I didn't say that. You said that.
Actually, I gave up trying to plow through the rest of your post because your interpretations of my straightforward words were so off the mark that disputing what you would be a gigantic waste of time.
It's clear that you're personally invested in the notion that you have no soul and you feel deep antipathy towards those who disagree with you. Cool! I don't feel hostility toward those who disagree with me, but if I'm going spend irreplaceable moments of my life discussing it with them, I expect them to be coherent.

* Just what in the world did a urban-studies major think that she could contribute that would improve the economy of a Paraguayan village? They need engineers, farmers, mechanics - someone who can teach them how to improve their lives in the here-and-now. A bunch of half-remembered college lib-arts mumbo-jumbo isn't going to help dig a well or improve crop yields.
* Does this gal really, truly believe that the north is wealthy because it stole from the south? Wealth is the end-product of a culture that begins by respecting human autonomy and the right to property. None of the poor SOBs who are born into a Latino culture deserve it; but their misfortune is not my fault. But be of good cheer: the JEF and his hordes are busily wrecking the culture that generates wealth, so soon she won't have to go abroad to experience third-world poverty: she'll be living it right here.

Not surprisingly, it ain't exactly true.
The experiment was conducted in 2007 by John-Dylan Haynes, a neuroscientist at the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience in Berlin. People were told to press a button with either their right or left index fingers whenever they felt the urge, and to remember the letter that was showing on the screen when they made the decision. The experiment used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to reveal brain activity in real time as the volunteers chose to use their right or left hands.
The experiment claimed to show that the brain made the decision up to seven seconds ahead of time, but it was only 60 accurate at best, a percentage not much better than chance.
Oops.
Itzhak Fried, a neuroscientist and surgeon at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Tel Aviv Medical Center in Israel, did his own experiments and concluded that the chemical processes in the brain begin about 1.5 seconds before the conscious decision is made.
That's closer to my notion that the limitations of the flesh and chemicals involved require a "warming up" period, the way old TVs had to warm up. We know that there are layers of consciousness. Who's to say there isn't a precognitive aspect of our consciousness of which we're unaware, but which is in charge of the jelly that allows our thoughts to swirl around inside our head.
This precognition receives an alert that the decision is about to be made and begins the slow process of warming up our inefficient flesh and chemicals, which take 1.5 seconds to sort it all out, and then the final level of consciousness becomes aware of the decision.
The soul is not only one level of consciousness, or else we wouldn't have repressed memories, unconscious motivations, hidden resentments we ourselves are not even aware of, and so on.
What about split-second decisions? Let's say a guy suddenly thrusts a gun in your face and you shoot him dead in less than a second. The whole thing is over in two seconds. How the hell would that eight-second time lag work then? How would the brain make the decision to act eight seconds ahead of time when the entire incident lasted only two seconds?
At any rate, the claim that the brain makes the decision eight seconds before the consciousness is aware of it turns out, sadly, to be a not quite true. It was embellished for purposes of self-aggrandizement.
Oh, well.

Add a third category: those annoyed at your patronizing smugness, your dishonest way of arguing, and your limitless self-love.
They make you and extremely unattractive person.

Your own "scientific expertise" had a few holes blown in it by your mischaracterization of the Haynes experiment.
Either you were unaware that it was deeply flawed, or you deliberately exaggerated its effectiveness in order to bolster your position.
Real scientists don't violate their ethics that way.

Is that wrong?

Yes. Because, years ago white people used to do that to black golfers for being sassy.

Never any mention from liberals about the corrupt governments that rule over these poor nations... the cruel leftwing dictator who keeps power for life by keeping his/her people poor.
Never any mention. No. It's our fault because we go to Disneyland.
