Reagan Vindicated: Missile Defense Works
Max Boot:
The latest Gaza war is only a few days old, but already one conclusion can be drawn: missile defense works. This is only the latest vindication for the vision of Ronald Reagan who is emerging as a consensus pick for one of the all-time great U.S. presidents.
For it was Ronald Reagan who made missile defense a major priority for the U.S. and our allies. His 1983 speech on the subject was widely derided as "Star Wars" because he envisioned that some missile would be intercepted in space. For years critics claimed that it was impossible to intercept missiles in flight, or that at the very least it would be prohibitively expensive to do so. But now the U.S. West Coast is actually protected by a limited ballistic-missile defense system based primarily around satellites, sea-based Aegis and X-band radars, and Standard Missile-3 interceptors. We don't know how the system would work in combat but it has been vindicated in testing.
I remember how when Reagan announced SDI, the critics - including many prominent scientists - howled and swore that it and missile defense in general would never work. Even as a wee lad I knew their arguments were bullshit even if I didn't have the knowledge or training at the time to prove it.
Well they're still going at it, continually shifting the goal posts as missile defense systems are accepted and come on line. And still just as wrong.
In fact here is some footage of a completely impossible missile defense system utterly failing to intercept a salvo of rockets over Beersheba yesterday. (thanks to BenK)
Missile defense systems 1, liberal scientist critics 0. Advantage: Reality.
Welfare is now the largest item in the federal budget, and under Barack Obama's budget-the one that didn't get any votes, but may nevertheless be a blueprint for the next four years-it is slated to grow another 30% in Obama's second term.
Robert Samuelson points out that the welfare state is breaking us and yet we can't talk about it. So of course the Obama administration wants to encourage new immigrants to get on the welfare too.
And if you disagree, you're more racist than Hitler.
How Gen. Petraeus and Paula Broadwell Exchanged Secret Emails
The same way Al Qaeda often does - by leaving emails as drafts in a shared email account. And they got caught the same way as well.
Rather than transmitting emails to the other's inbox, they composed at least some messages and instead of transmitting them, left them in a draft folder or in an electronic "dropbox," the official said. Then the other person could log onto the same account and read the draft emails there. This avoids creating an email trail that is easier to trace.
Unfortunately for them, when the IP address that logs into the account with the drafts is always the same, it can be traced back to a source. Essentially, Petraeus and Broadwell's affair was outed because Broadwell sent threatening messages over an easily traceable Gmail account to someone, and then used another Gmail account to communicate with Petraeus.

Red Dawn Review: The Tipping Point for Lazy Remakes
Consider this fairly awesome review a mere warm-up for the eventual epic Ace one. Needless to say it was a 3 thumbs down with prejudice.
North Korea has invaded America. BOOM! Did you notice what happened there? With that opening sentence, Red Dawn has already said "Screw this, I'm going out for a smoke". We're not even three minutes into the movie and we're already in full-on "re-write' mode.
...You see, Red Dawn is more of an idea than an actual film, and that idea is this: you will watch anything. An.y.thi.ng. Does it matter if they filmed the movie in 2009, and then held onto it for three years in the hopes that one day no one would notice how stupid it is? Nope. Does it matter that they switched out the "villain" from a nation that spends $144 billion on the military to one that can't feed its own people? Not in the slightest. Hell, it doesn't even matter if the words make sense, or if the edits are cohesive. All that matters is it's on the big screen, it's got a Hemsworth in it, and they'll be charging you to witness the spectacle. I'm betting you won't, and that we're in the process of calling their bluff. Fool us 500 times, shame on us. Fool us with Ethnic Chinese CGI-morphed into scenes with North Korean flags, shame on them.

It's a vicious circle--people who are unhappy and self-conscious about themselves mutilate themselves and make themselves freakish, and when society is repelled by them, they get ever more unhappy and self-conscious. Note: I'm not talking about folks who have more than the average number of tattoos or piercings, but people like this, or Chastity Bono, or that British teenager who was given male to female sex reassignment surgery and now wants his penis back. Tragic.

That Eastwood guy:
There is an episode of "Mr. Ed" (which at times was screamingly funny) where Mr. Ed is making crank phone calls and bothers Wilbur's new neighbor........Clint Eastwood.
This is 1962 or 1963, and Clint is a lot younger and handsomer (Rowdy Yates on "Rawhide") and the woman on the show just swoon over him.
Hilarity ensues (literally). Put in "Mr Ed and Clint Eastwood" on You tube and it will come up.
It's pretty funny and a good way to kill a half hour on You Tube. Except those bastards at Google have figured an angle about how to make money because you are watching You Tube. So there's that, too.

He's one district over from me, and he's just as slimy as the rest. Levin also bitched about the oft-repeated lie that Boner and Cantor are mortal enemies. Just another lie.
Boner's BFF, Kathy McMorris-Rogers used to be listed as one of the Repubes most in debt. I'm sure that's not the case anymore. I'll have to track down that article and send it to Levin.

I saw a Joan Rivers comedy bit the other night and during, she spoke seriously about how she had been in the room with Cher when Chastity called and said "Mom, I need $25k to get a penis" and how without even raising an eyebrow, she wrote out a check.
Bizarre.

Chocolate covered, peanut butter core. I could, and have, eaten an entire bag of them at one sitting. Nabisco made them, IIRC. Haven't seen any in the grocery stores here since I got here in the late '80's.

JC's The Thing is actually much better than the original. Am a fan of Hawks' version and was cynical about the 1982 version being released. Was very wrong. It is one of the greats, even a masterpiece of horror. Would also acknowledge Cronenberg's "The Fly", the 1978 "Invasion of the body snatchers" and the 2004 "Dawn of the Dead" as remakes that either improved on the original, or, at least didn't suck.

And the lead guy, the half-Korean dude, is a stand-up comic and clearly not a flaming lefty. If nothing else because his brother and Dad were in the Army.
I was praising the show in an ONT just last week or on the weekend. It's not p.c. either: the season finale mocks an FAA human rights employee hearing.

They covered for him, they got him elected, but nobody in his administration is going to be the frontrunner in 2016 (sorry, Joe, but it's true) and he has been a disaster in every way: Economically on every front, on the civil liberties front, on the war front, his "green initiatives" have been sleazy corruption, there are even rumors that Benghazi was a cover-up for a CIA rendition program that Obama had "outlawed" with his second Executive Order.

Which is obvious nonsense to anyone who observes any GOP officeholders.
The whole arrangement is the politicians lie to us during election season to get our votes then forget about us until the next one rolls around. Many of us go along with it because we're full spectrum conservatives. But it's silly to think we're dominating anything.
As for Santorum, it would be nice if folks here wouldn't lie on Democrats' behalf. He suggested once that we might want to discuss the moral degradation caused by the availability of contraception (a position which is totally reasonable for any faithful Catholic), and while that may imply in your mind a willingness to do some thing about it, he never, to the best of my knowledge, had any plans to do so.
But make no mistake about it. To the extent this past election was decided on the celebration of infanticide, sodomy, and theft, this nation has proven it deserves the destruction that is coming. Some of just wish it were better than that.

Different stuff entirely. You need the aluminum to be in unoxidized form to get decent conductivity out of it.
That bath scheme Corning is using isn't nearly as flexible as what I was doing either. I could selectively draw micron range width conductive traces into the surface.
The novel thing was I wasn't using the usual metal-organic pyrophoric gases to do it.

The SDI cause -- which I supported at the time and still do -- was not helped by the huge screwup at Lawrence Livermore over the "Excalibur" X-ray laser.
There were two camps of how to implement ballistic missile defense: "smart rocks" and directed energy weapons. LLNL was pushing Excalibur as their directed-energy concept.
This is where the famous Edward Teller quote came from that a "module the size of an executive desk could potentially shoot down the entire Soviet land-based missile force".
Except that was bullshit, because the core Excalibur physics concept did not work. The Livermore boffins had convinced themselves it did, on the basis of an instrumentation fault.
When it became clear that Excalibur was a dead end, the _New York Times_ pounced all over it with lengthy exposés, and pronounced the entire strategic defense concept to be fundamentally flawed.
Which it was not. Only one part of it. Except, try explaining that to your typical urban liberal _NYT_ reader.
The smart-rock concept lived on, and proved a success after investment of a lot of engineering sweat, and that's pretty much Iron Dome right there.

Yes, last Friday and Sat. in Gettysburg. BTW, next year is the 150th of the Gburg address. 7/4, all hotels remotely near Gburg are sold out. Too hot for me anyway. I took a ladyfriend of mine with me. She's about 5'9, blonde, very pretty, and very down-to-Earth. Her family, going back, are "Old Believers" - Russian very Orthodox. She's not so much, but she looked stunning in her ballgowns; even her day dress. Everyone, M & F, wanted pix with her. Good thing I know how to properly lace a corset, pin up petticoats, and all that so she could dance properly. Too many women don't.

Then they just wait until a cloudy day to hit you. The energy density needed to really power through something is truly enormous, and targeting is needs to be very precise. A miss by a millimeter might as well be a miss by a mile.
I just don't see the ROI on a pure energy weapon for taking out incoming shit.
Gigawatt range shit is so power intensive, its naturally going to have mobility issues involved simply due to the bulk of the energy handling apparatus. There's also going major issues with cycle time because of the need to cool components between shots.
I like flying rocks. Simple, mass producible, portable, cheap, and a portable Coleman generator could produce enough power to run a launch station.

1. He is an outstanding firearm and firearm accessories salesman.
2. I owe President Obama an apology. You see, I always thought that he was a cold, unimaginative, tight lipped grifter politician. But seeing his post election rallies where he cried like a baby, he's really ... quite emotional. Isn't he?
3. I hear his umbrella wielding skills are coming along nicely what with the hours of practice and expert tutoring.

Good for you.
I have been caring for a colony (13-21 cats) for several years now. If it is truly a feral, it may become accustomed to you, but is unlikely to ever become friendly. However, most stray cats are "community cats" that were once homed but got lost or were abandoned. They, with patience, can become really wonderful pets. Of the four cats I call pets, the one I am closest with was a "feral" which was TNR'd and dropped off at my house without warning.
He's my Buddy.

I'm wildly phobic -- just this morning had a filling replaced (with additional cavity underneath drilled-out) with no anesthetic -- but seriously, the procedure itself wasn't all that bad, and I didn't even notice when they nabbed 5 polyps. Getting around the "corners" was the second worst part after the colon prep, and my "recovery" was: get dressed, walk to bathroom, do massive shart, clean up, leave, nap (because the damned colon prep kept me up all night).
I did it without anesthetic because I'm phobic -- my lab tech at my regular doc had her first two without anesthetic just for cost savings, and I'm kind o' wondering why anyone should sign up for the problems of anesthesia.

Seriously, I would welcome some advice on getting contractors to at least pretend that scheduling and communication are necessary. I'm dealing with the last third or so of a major remodel involving every major system (hvac, elec, plumbing, construction), and can't really get over how little they seem to concern themselves with timelines agreed to, or why they can't even pick up the fucking phone to let me know what's going on if they're late. I can understand difficulties they normally have in their line of work, but can't excuse their negligence of at least informing me so I know.

Nonsense, Adrianne. You get yours first. Like the Michigan SC Justice I mentioned above, or like this:
This time, itÂ’s about scamming the Detroit Public Library.
The federal governmentÂ’s ongoing probes into public corruption landed today on the doorsteps of the cityÂ’s main library branch, where FBI agents raided the historic landmark over allegations of contract fraud.
$1000 trashcans, add corruption, stir and serve while piping hot.

Well, if it's any consolation, I'm sure it'll have a new name tomorrow. It apparently had a new hash, but used the same odd capitalization usage as the unwelcome guest over the weekend.

It becomes even less surprising after finding out he lived in Tonopah, NV. The middle of nowhere and nothing to do. Oh, and if any of you out there ever drive through it, be very conscious of your speed, especially near the junction of US 6 and US 95 on the east side of town. That's a favorite revenue-generation spot for the local constabulary, and out-of-state vehicles seem to get extra attention.

I've got family in town (haven't seen them yet due to work, but have tomorrow off). Should be a good holiday. I *am* sorry to see that I'll be busy with the fam on the day Ace finally breaks down and has a moron gun thread. That should be a thing of hideous beauty.

and for the record: i'm pretty sure the iron dome was created by scientists. don't let that throw a monkey wrench in your fucking caveman narrative, tho...and anyway, don't you have some witches to go burn?
Posted by: jimi ray at November 21, 2012 03:35 AM (79EF9)
This 'science' you praise seems like a complex, difficult magic - dangerous for mortals like us to approach. And the god that powers your 'science' magic must be a jealous, weak one for he alone among the others cannot tolerate the acknowledgement of other gods of power.
You claim your god can control the skies, water and fire, and death.
But can he also create life from nothingness, tell us where smiles and the weak nuclear force come from, and guide your spear true to its target? Can he protect your dream soul and give you the skill to crush those of your enemies?
Bah. Your god is boastful and yet full of fear.

You know .... that's not a bad idea. That could work almost anywhere. A bidding situation, a market, a "pay to crush" kind of thing. You may have just discovered "the next big thing", the killer app that monetizes all of these things that have been "free" up till now.! Why, I ask myself, should I be able to type these worthless words here for "free"?! I should be allowed to "read" for free, but I should have to pay for what I say. Just think about how that might change the political dynamic. All of those lefty, no work, no money freeloaders, would be out of the market! Eureka ... you have found it!!

What a pathetic hate filled bigot Jimi Ray is. He's that homo that's supposed to push the anti-bullying of gay people by being a pathetic bully himself.
Probably regularly deludes himself into thinking that the reason people don't like him is because he's gay rather than the fact that he's an angry smug little shit that enjoys the smell of his own farts.

Beware, as you lean against your hand to support yourself over the pisser, arm outstretched like Da Vinci's painting on the ceiling, as you wait for the relief to flow.
You may see an old man's hand there if you look up. I know.
It has occurred to many I imagine, intoxicated or not, in just the right light, that yesterday is gone and that that hand looks like a grandfathers hand.
Tragedy. Time. Suffering. Death. Take a stand.
That hand was young, it once was wrinkle free, strong, bronze almost, but that is how all before have felt, your fathers, your grandfathers, all.
Fear not. This is a dream. Simply be true, and wait for the call.
