It's not hard to see why companies view modern unions as a slow-growing malignancy. You may survive for a while with some quality of life but in the end the cancer always kills the host.
Many people think of labour unions as organisations to benefit workers, and think of employers who are opposed to unions as just people who don't want to pay their employees more money. But some employers have made it a point to pay their employees more than the union wages, just to keep them from joining a union. Why would they do that, if it is just a question of not wanting to pay union wages? The Twinkies bankruptcy is a classic example of costs created by labour unions that are not confined to paycheques. The work rules imposed in union contracts required the company that makes Twinkies, which also makes Wonder Bread, to deliver these two products to stores in separate trucks. Moreover, truck drivers were not allowed to load either of these products into their trucks. And the people who did load Twinkies into trucks were not allowed to load Wonder Bread, and vice versa. All of this was obviously intended to create more jobs for the unions' members. But the needless additional costs that these make-work rules created ended up driving the company into bankruptcy, which can cost 18,500 jobs. The union is killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Non-white groups tend to increase by immigration and first generation births. After that, the population numbers drop like a rock. With Mexico's has dropped to 2.27 from nearly 2.7 a decade ago, and continues to fall. Already many Latin American countries have fertility rates below replacement levels.
The biggest demographic (and perhaps only demographic) boom will be amongst conservative whites, as they as a group will be the only ones above replacement levels.
Considering that conservative whites are the left's demographic Emmanuel Goldstein, this bodes well for non-socialists. Perhaps we are already seeing this by Romney WINNING the white youth demographic and the white women demographic.

I had one shove her cart in front of me in the express lane a couple of weeks ago. I had 2 items, she had a cart load. 6-7 different orders because of the WIC vouchers, took forever to ring up. She had on her "Juicy" warm up suit, a 3 size too small Ed Hardy tshirt, the biggest lower back tattoo I have ever seen, and a baby bump about 6 months with her 1ish year old in her buggy.

I once had a friend in Savannah that I visited frequently (well, once a year at Spring break) until we had a big falling out over something stupid.
But having visited Savannah a bunch of times, it's a toss up as to what will kill you first; the drunkeness of the white people that live there or the incredible incompetency of the African American population.
It's pleasant in the Spring and Fall, but so G-D hot and humid in the summer it's unbearable (which leads to all the drinking). The Piggly-Wiggly supermarkets are kept like walk-in coolers during the summer.

You do get a change of seasons in NEFL. It occurs abut once every week. When the cold sets in it is so bitter that you can only be warmed by sitting in a tub of hot water, then... a week later, it's in the 70s again.

Avoid j'ville then. It gets fracking cold in north FL. Actually, it gets fracking cold anywhere north of Palm Beach or inland.
At 5am, it can be 72 in Palm Beach, and in the low 50's out in the cane fields around BelleGlade.
The heater core in my Jetta sprang a leak a while ago and I just bypassed it thinking, "this is FL, why spend $800 on something I'll never use"...
...then I had occasion to drive back from Orlando in the middle of the night in February. I took 441 down to Okeechobee rather than I95 near the coast. Big mistake!

Lack of A/C is not a big deal in a house designed prior to its pervasive installation. The old style "FL home" isn't that uncomfortable in the summer. Open a few windows, get the fans going and its not that bad.

It gets into the teens here and, with the humidity, anything below about 45 deg cuts like a knife. It sticks to you and even when you walk into a warm room, it takes quite a while to warm up.
I was far more comfortable in Minneapolis in December when it was 18 deg than I am here in Jax when it's in the 30s.

Actually, on our one and only visit (so far) to DisneyWorld, we were quite surprised when it dropped 30 degrees on day 3. It wasn't so much the absolute cold, as the utter unexpectedness of it.

I am more horrified to admit that it was an enjoyable show. And I generally hate pop music. More of a Roger Waters/ Peter Gabriel gal myself.
However.. the Bieber show was well done, nicely paced, had high production values and a very, very positive message. Plus... NOT sleazy.

I was stranded in Newark (with the Norovirus) for four days during the Presidents' Day blizzard in 02 and in Philly during an ice storm in, IIRC, 07.

Actually, it's quite an interesting phenomena. The Central Valley of California acts like a gigantic lung. When the ground gets hot in midsummer, it heats the air -- which rises, leaving a low pressure at lower altitudes -- and pretty much the only pass the air can move through is at the Golden Gate. So massive air volumes move from over the Pacific through the Golden Gate and into the Central Valley. Since the ocean water the air was over before it got "inhaled" came to us direct from British Columbia (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Current ), San Francisco gets cold, wet, fast air just as the rest of the state gets warmest.

In the High Plains that's called "Wednesday". I believe that the record for temperature swings in one day is in North Dakota, close to degrees. In the Texas Panhandle they call them "Blue Northers" and I believe that Santa Ana lost a shitload of men to one.
I remember watching a few Denver Bronco games where it was around 70 at kickoff and by the 4th quarter they were playing in near blizzard conditions

New Bern is a pretty little place. Wife's late mother was a war bride from London, and met two others, Aussies, on the boat over who were both settling in NC as well, one in New Bern. Both have been much-loved "aunts" to wife-o her whole life, and we do a day trip to visit every now and then. The other is in Ocean Isle, which ain't bad either.

I was in Montreal one summer and not only is it a beautiful city, but it was much warmer than Upstate NY, probably because Lake Ontario isn't refrigerating everything.
They have extensive underground malls and a good subway system, so the rough winter doesn't result in cabin fever.
Unfortunately, it's populated by French Canadians who make Parisians look downright folksy in comparison

We had a news story at Halloween about a guy who let his teenage daughter go to school looking like a pron star. And she did. Female principal told her so. Now guy, who let daughter go to school looking like "slutty pirate" started protesting the principal for saying his daughter looked like a pron star, using a sign on a giant truck.
Yes, this was the lead story in Detroit, aka "murder city."

I grew up in Hibbing MN, where there was a contest every year over the "icebox of the nation" with International Falls, MN. We would have weeks of below 0 weather, and a lot of very below zero weather. The worst part was no sunshine for weeks or months at a time.
The worst weather I was ever in was in Bemidji MN where I was attending college. -40 temp, with a wind chill of minus 80. I had to go get my books to study from the guy's car I had gone to shoot pool and do karaoke with the night before. Walked about two miles each way. I had on 2 pairs long johns, a mink coat Grandma bought me from the preacher's wife, head wrapped in scarf, Sorel boots, and had to stop every so often to melt the ice in my eyelashes. I don't want to hear about cold in FL or CA.
I live in New Mexico now, where the sun shines most the time. I am happy happy happy.

Thorvald @ #522 - I knew the kinda loser cousin of Bob Dylan. He would wear a guitar strung across his back to school sometimes and play in the school contests sometimes. He did not have the writing ability of his cousin.
And there is a bar there now called Zimmy's that has a "Bob Dylan Singing contest" in the summer. I get back home sometimes but ONLY in the summer now. I have relatives that knew Bob back in the day.

Oh Thorvald, you don't know how much I miss the fresh fish! Was up in southern MN for brother's wedding in June, but, alas no walleyes were caught!
I did however catch a nice northern pike, but it wasn't large enough. I needed 7 pounds or one more inch , and it was only 6 1/2 pounds. I don't like cleaning the northerns, tho, too damn many bones.

We are NOT all Obama lovers here. If you look at the state map for who voted for TFG, you will notice that the cities, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Taos, are where the old hippie that escaped CA live, and the res areas. My county went solidly for RR.
We have a lot of poverty in this state, and a lot of moonbats in certain areas. The more traditional, havent-been-taken-over-by-moonbats or welfare recipients areas are more red. Just to let you know.

I'd left it open on the email side, and I didn't want to forget it on the blog side before I was sure I'd passed it on.
As I'm sure everyone has noticed, the BH doesn't really participate on the blog-side, but she keeps feeling positive about everyone she's met IRL and all the interactions she's had -- (and, BTW, feels a tremendous gap on not having personally met her "inside contact" in NC.......but that's pending).

Supposed to be summer around here but it's only 64 deg F. Feels colder. It's probably the reading at the airport.

I live on the other side of town. But, staying warm will be done anyway. Been truly purdy around here -- clear skies followed by clear skies. gorgeous but all the willies are chilly.

My cousin and I did one in a day in the middle of winter. Old shitty dry bottom boiler out, new Smith wet bottom in, 4 new circulator pumps, high tech - "boiler boss" controls and a bunch of new wiring.

Oh, a hot air furnace...
...I hate duct work. They're common in apartments/condos, because they're the cheapest you can buy initially, but the quality of the heating sucks compared to a boiler system.
Radiant is probably the slickest and most satisfying but its expensive to install and there have been some issues with the PEX tubing leaking
