Overnight Open Thread (11-22-2012) - Turkey Overdose Edition

Got interrupted by an early arriving turkey and now falling into a post-dinner coma...must not go into the light....

Happy Thanksgiving All!

At this rate we'll have man-sized turkeys by 2070.

Why Aren't There Any Thanksgiving Songs?

Well this video from the same folks behind Rebecca Black may explain why.

Our Socialist First Thanksgiving

Well in their defense socialism didn't have the world-wide record of failure and death it has today. And they were smart enough to dump it when they saw it wasn't working.

"It's wrong to say that America was founded by capitalists. In fact, America was founded by socialists who had the humility to learn from their initial mistakes and embrace freedom."

Tryptophan Exonerated?

If you're feeling sleepy after a big Thanksgiving meal, it's the probably the gluttony that's making you tired.

Let's Have Some Peace for Dinner

Hmm deliciously coincidental:

Peace, one of two turkeys pardoned by President Obama last year, was euthanized Monday, according to an official who insisted the timing of the death - days before the Thanksgiving holiday - was not suspicious.

The Turkeys Have Mounted A Counter-Attack!

An obligatory classic.

Here's the thing -- most stores should be closed on Thanksgiving, except for the ones that aren't. 7-11's, for instance, exist on the business model that a $1 pint of milk (if you buy it from a regular store during regular hours) can be worth $2.50 at 4 am. Since that's its business model, it is ridiculous to suppose that they'd be closed on Thanksgiving.

On the flip side, your local supermarket's business model is based on "we can afford to pay people to work in one place as butchers, stockers, cashiers, bakers, produce guys, baggers and floor sweepers if we hire them in regular shifts between 6 am and midnight and give them holidays off. So they shouldn't work Thanksgiving because it's not their deal. Supermarkets, BTW, tend to run on really thin profit margins -- like 3% -- and it's not unusual for the Assistant Manager's Salary to be exceeded by the cardboard recycling income.

The problem arises when someone walks into a 7-11 at 4 am and goes, "hey, man, why is milk so freakin' expensive?"

Yeah, because today is the day Death takes a holiday. Every hospital closed today. No doctors working today.

Please, when I worked in radio nobody gave a shit that we had to work. I bet you would be pissed off if every television and radio station shut down today. It also sucks that gas stations are open today, because we should have bought our gas yesterday or just wait until tomorrow.

Cops and firemen should also have the day off. Since everyone is at home and no one is dying, they really aren't needed.

Also, we should have just cancelled the football, basketball, and minor league hockey games played today. When I worked in sports and we had games on Thanksgiving, nobody gave a damn that we were working. They wanted to be entertained, period. I thought that was very selfish on their part, but I couldn't argue because I wanted that paycheck.

We should just shut off the entire electric, gas, and communications grid today because those people deserve to have the day off just like everyone else.

101 My Thanksgiving Night at WalMart...

Got there at 7:30; sales didn't officially begin until 8. Gaggles of shoppers waiting in lines that stretched around the freakin' store, arrows taped on the floor so people wouldn't go against traffic and cause a pile-up. 7:55, somebody toots an airhorn and people think that's the sign to begin slingin' and clawin', so they do so. But it's too early, and a local policeman who is working security there threatens to run 'em all in if they don't put the picture frames back RIGHT THIS MINUTE and he's not kidding dammit. Finally, at 7:57, the employees and security people give up and let 'em have at it. I, personally, saw two fist fights in the first thirty seconds. Over a set of sheets. Seriously.
Only took about an hour for me to know that I'd had enough so I paid for my few trinkets and left for the car. Unloaded the cart, walked to the door, and...*&(*@ flat tire. Though about calling Mr. Me, but figured it would take him longer to get there than for me to just change it. Hah. Wheel wouldn't come off, had to get my son in law to come back and help me, then had to go back inside and buy a g.d. rubber mallet to coax the wheel off. Finally, spare tire is on, son in law on his way home...but wait! The bleepin' spare is - wait for it - flat. At that point, I couldn't have given less of a shit about the rim of the spare, nursed it to the nearest gas station and aired up the spare and limped home.
Now, I plan to drink bourbon until I can't anymore and then go to bed.

108 What's being destroyed in this incarnation is capital. We're being flooded with garbage debt, that we're supposed to make whole in actual value-producing endeavors when the expenditures of today fail to produce any worth. The classic example is issuing bonds to run up a deficit to finance green energy schemes that fail, and having future taxpayers try to pay off the bonds in the dark.

114

I ventured out to WalMart but came home empty handed.

A. Packed 40 deep in each register line.

B.  "Special Purchase" items not in the immediate area of said item group (i.e. sheet sets in the sheet section, toaster oven in the kitchen appliance section, etc.)  No, they "had" been stacked on pallets in the main and secondary aisles.  Like bones in the high desert, they were picked clean.

C.  Helpful staff in yellow vests/smoks didn't know where the two "Special Purchase" items I was there to buy had been placed.  One did not speak English, one just grunted at the stuff right in front of her, and one was very charming and smiley but of absolutely no assistance at all.

D.  If you slowed to get a look at the pallets, you were run over or bumped out of the way.  Think of the muzzies circling the Grand Mosque in Mecca, it's very similar to WalMart's Thursday night Black Friday sale.

E.  Came home and found what I wanted online from a choice of JCP, Kohls, or Sears with free shipping and at the same Black Friday price as in their stores.

It was an interesting and educational experience, but one that never will be repeated.

Good for you guys. It is sort of comforting to finally be sorting out what we want to do as a family. I think we put up the tree at St. Niklaus day last year and  it looks like that is going to be the tradition since the kids thought this week was too early. Like I said earlier, the team I worked for had a tradition of playing on Thanksgiving night, so we worked Thanksgiving. When I worked in radio, we worked on Thanksgiving, hell we worked on Christmas. It sucked, but we decided to get together on Friday night and celebrate it. We felt it was okay to give thanks on Friday instead. Plus when we went out for dinner to celebrate it, the waiters and waitresses all said they were doing the same thing.

1/4 C ham juice and drippings

Add enough flour to make a slurry

Add milk and stir to make gravy

Serve over biscuits with the leftover ham

1/4 C makes a lot of gravy, you can use 2T to the same effect if you don't want so much.

Also, mix it in dry dog food for Fido. He will be your BFF.

168 We did a delimbed turkey this year -- which gets you out of the "how to not leave the drumsticks raw while the breast dehydrates" issue. It featured one of those cheap plastic buttons that pop out when "done".

Anyway, got tired of waiting, hit it with my own meat thermometer and checked the reading against the venerable "Joy of Cooking"....and pulled it out. I let it rest for a couple of minutes while I moved stuff around. Then, I transferred it to my carving setup and realized my carving knife needed washing. While I was washing my carving knife, the stupid button finally decided to pop out and I said "HA!" so loud the BH came in from the other room to see if I'd sliced myself.

That's the button that's supposed to tell you to take something out of the oven, popping 7-8 minutes after it had actually been removed from the oven.

Might have, uh...eaten myself sick. Literally. But what a wonderful meal it was! I asked a lady shopper where she had found all the movies.  She  had a couple dozen  dvds in her cart.

She must have been entering her shopper's high,  because her eyes didn't focus too well and she gesticulated wildly as she replied, pointing first to a  pallet box of underwear, then to the children's shoes, then to the electronics section (random points of the compass it seemed) while breathing deeply and telling me the movie bins were all over.  I had circled half the store by then without spotting a single one.

I thanked her and went on my way, certain I'd never find the movie bins.  But I had enjoyed the show.   You see she was very amply endowed and was wearing a  tight fitting low cut top so as she waved her arms about and breathed deeply  I added two more things to my list of things to be thankful about.

Also when doing dry rub put in 2 cans of chicken broth and a can of water or so. Keep an eye on it from time to time after turning up heat, according to pan size you may have to dip broth out.

I can tell you with some degree of assurance -- whatever happens to health insurance in the US over the next 3-5 years will be a complete and total clusterfuck. There has been huge broad-level directives that contradict each other, and stalling on the detail-level policies that get things done. If you are over 400% of the poverty level, you are better off in another country where the rules are set, if you can somehow maintain the option of repatriating to the best healthcare on the planet if you need it.

Karl has got a good read on this -- start here (http://tinyurl.com/av74sev). There's nothing magic about healthcare -- but there's a lot that's magic in the lies about healthcare. Health "insurance" mostly insurance -- as in a payment against a remote risk....it's "prepaid health" -- normal things you could budget for overlaid with bureaucracy.

200 And you know what else I learned tonight?

Never go to Walmart on a Thanksgiving night.

Holy shit!

It reminds me why I hate dealing with people.  First, for whatever reason, the Walmart management decided the best way to serve the customers was to put up barricades and corrale people.  Secondly they decided to put product in strange areas.  For instance, displays of discounted DVDs in the middle of the men's apparel section.  HUH?!?!?!?!  Which sucked cause I was there to pick up some clothes for myself.  Way to go, Walmart!  Now I can't get to the pants because there's a huge line for DVDs wrapped around that section and no one wanting to let me through.  Brilliant!  (And seriously, "people," Amazon is selling all the same shit for the same price.  Save yourselves the gas money.)

It was like a government meddlers wet dream.  Think about it.  Everyone being herded like cattle into tiny spaces stripped of freedom (of movement in this case) and what results?  People treating each other like shit!  It was a disgusting sea of fatties and rude little shitheads.  I lasted five minutes before getting the hell out.  The hell with it.  Not worth it just to save five bucks on a pair of cheap-o pants.

Oh well.  Live and learn.

202 I have a radio mounted in the wall of my kitchen, the type you would find in an RV. I have a pair of speakers in the master bedroom and another pair in the front room where the fireplace is, everything flush mounted and wired in when the house was built (modular home, double-wide trailer house without the wheels). For the first time we have that radio fired up to a local station that starts playing Christmas music on Thanksgiving afternoon with the speakers in the front room on. It sounds surprisingly decent.

So, I noticed BestBuy had a $79 one for $29 bucks in its doorbusters sale.  But no way I'm showing up at midnight..

But since it's after midnight here, I thought I would check on their stock and see which stores might still have one for the morning.

Well, lo and behold, they got the doorbuster price online!  Shipped to my home free in 2 days.  Booyah!

Nope, I`ve been cooking for 40 years, usually cook on the big smoker (10 -20 turkeys and 10 or so whole hams, heat is never over 250 I`m sure), after sitting in the oven for 12 hrs at around 125 the heat accumilation is built in, that`s why you finish it off at a lower temp. yeah, but ......

I need to get a handle on this crap.  Now, I will grant you that the math sez the whole thing will crash really fast.  But, the question I am really struggling with is this: "if my money is going to be wasted or destroyed by this behemoth -- and I can't seem to vote to do one damn thing about that -- why shouldn't I be the one doing the wasting?"

As near as I can tell, working will be a sucker's game for a while.  But, me being me, I have been making a huge, complex spreadsheet fulla assumptions and factors about assumptions all stacked on top of each other and worked out to two decimals 40 years into the future.  I know.  Trust me, it is as silly as it sounds.  I am just afraid to trust my gut without at least going thru the exercise.

But I am damned if I can really tell what these idiots even expected to happen, much less the question of whether their expectation has a hope.  I can't even seem to get a handle on their model so I can begin to fret over whether it will work or not.

It's no novel. I doubt the spacing will work, what with our broken-assed blog, but here's the start.  It's quite short, so there isn't much to follow:

A Sheepdog's Night

11/23/2012

The night is dark, and wolves are about.

My flock sleeps. I do not.

The wolves may come; they may not.

My flock sleeps. I do not.

Let the wolves come, snapping and howling.

They lust for blood, but will have none tonight.

Though my flock sleeps, I will not.

When Night is past and morning has arrived,

greeted by sweet clover sparkling in easy sunlight,

my beloved will bask, and feed,

and love easily.

246 JC, since you're being kind (the spacing is so wrong, f*ing Pixy!), this is the 2nd half:

Whole and hale, the night just a memory

quickly forgotten, the danger but a shadow

burned away against the gentle warmth

of morning sunlight,

They Live.

There can be no wolves in a place

so serene,

so beautiful,

so full of life.

I know better, but can never tell them so.

My flock will not hear my words about the wolves.

The sunlight blinds.

Tonight, my flock will sleep. I will not.

Economics is part math, which tells you what will happen, and part psychology, which would tell you when if you had perfect knowledge of the thinking of every person in the marketplace. Eventually enough people will cry 'bullshit' and the lie collapses. Even if they don't say so, the behavioral changes due to seeing through the lie will alter behavior to the point that it eventually becomes unsustainable. Unfortunately due to the way exponents work on debt, the longer folks stubbornly refuse to acknowledge reality the greater the gap between the lie and the truth become (wait and it becomes worse).

Since part of this is psychology, prices, in the absolute worst case, can in fact go so high that no one can buy.

All that means is that no one values the little green slips of cotton displaying dead presidents enough to trade you real stuff for them. If I run a gas station, am starving, and the supermarket is bare, I'm not trading you fuel for paper in the vain hope the store will be stocked tomorrow. I will trade fuel for food.

agreed on all points.  But, what are we to do in the meantime?

I am a guy that makes investment decisions by making spreadsheets with my assumptions and tweaking those assumptions from minus stupid thru likely to positive stupid just to see the sensitivity of the moving parts.

In order to do that, I have to be able to identify the base case.  I don't have to believe in it, I just have to be able to write it down.  This is where I am presently stuck.  I can't write down the base case, because I am lacking data.

Right now, it appears to me that obummercare has provisions that will subsidize health insurance premiums for people up to 400% of the poverty line.  But it presently appears that if a person were to make just $1 over the 400% magic line, that last buck would cost that person many thousands of dollars.

So, I am saying to myself -- they can't be that stupid, right?  So, I am looking for phase in/phase out data and coming up blank.  I suspect I am doing something wrong, cuz if I am not we are in a world of hurt.  If they really are that stupid, then that will be the least of their mistakes, and life will be really tough on everybody.

The news told us countless times that CBO was running models.  Why can't I find the answers to the most basic stuff?  I could go directly to the law if I could find the text, but reading that stuff is usually tough sledding and often has all these little bits about changing CFR xxx.xx.xx by deleting a sentence here and there and you have to have all the references to have a hope of understanding it.  Hasn't anybody crunched some numbers and put the details out for others to review?  Where the hell is it?

Posted by: jc at November 23, 2012 12:05 AM (kfC1R)

If you have 50 employees, Obamacare applies. At 49, it doesn't. Or at least that's what I've read. If they didn't think through the incentive they created for small businesses (or dismissed the notion outright as their public statements suggested), I don't think it's a safe assumption at all that they worried about the 400% issue.

As to the rest of your question, there were a lot of blanks in the legislation to be filled in by the HHS secretary at a later date, and from what I hear that hasn't been done yet.

So, yeah, total clusterfuck.

beyond insane.  unemployment is going to get really bad if no one can figger out the damn rules.

I have learned more about the 49/50 employee thing lately, and it is not good.  People are going to be required to disclose their finances to their employer -- no shit -- so the employer can run self testing on the 9.5% cap BS.  Can you imagine your negotiations for a pay raise with your employer having your financial disclosure?

Also, the penalties don't start with Employee #50, they start with Employee #30.  The trigger point is 50, but the penalties back up 20 people.

Our firm has 54 employees.  Being nervous and planning ahead is just good sense, and it sure ain't easy to figger out how.

Lack of faith, people hoard, first thing, money. We will not be able to buy our way out of this one, they already tried that and it helped forestall to a certain extent, that`s over, we`re over.

I looked at that a while back. Remember, they handed out exemptions like candy to their political allies and for them the Cadillac tax doesn't kick in until 2018. I wonder how it is going to fix people who have their healthcare through their retirement? With everything going up and being taxed, they may not be able to afford it. It may force more people into the "exchanges." I think one thing employers will be doing is offering plans that cover less (meaning more OOP expenses for you) in order to avoid the cadillac tax. And this is another way of rationing healthcare.

288 Regarding the beer bread,

No need to buy a box of stale ingredients, Google/bing a recipe. Very easy and very cheap to do.

Ingredients can be as simple as
sugar
flour
beer.

If you don't want it to taste real beeery use a can/bottle of American pilsner type like Bud, PBR, Miller or a light (spit) beer.
If you want it a little more hearty use Sam Adams type.
Some recipes call for added herbs to make a dill type bread.
Or you can use club soda instead of the beer.  (just a suggestion)

290 Well I think my hubby's family, who all have jobs, but are liberal, thought maybe they could escape the long arm of obamas taxes, and it bit them in their asses. These are the people that need to be locked in a room for months and beaten daily.

291 Obama sent out a message not to gloat.  Thus we now know how many are completely obedient to Dear Leader.

So instead they were patronizingly tolerant of us and then plotted against us after we went back home.

292 I looked at that a while back. **** I recently became disabled. I'm still an employee of the company, but I am classified as "retired" for now. As an active employee my insurance was $44 per month (the least expensive option). It carries a $1600 deductible before insurance pays a dime and a $4k deductible before it pays 100%. Now, as a retiree, that same plan costs $257 per month. Sooooo, divide $1600 by 12 and add it to the monthly premium and I'm now spending $387 per month before the insurance company spends a dime. And, actually, it's more than that because the coverage is only 80% until $4k. So, basically, you can pay for the insurance but can't afford to go to the doctor. And...... This sharp increase occurs concurrent with my pay dropping by 40%. I am blessed to be single with no kids and to have made a decent salary because, otherwise, I'd be screwed.

293 "This collectivist impulse reflected itself in various heretical offshoots of Protestant Christianity ..."

Well, there goes his credibility.  The dude pretends that he has learned history's lessons and then puts out that Thanksgiving turkey.
