Does Too Much Education Make People Economically Dumb?
Well it sure seems that way.
In the wake of the election, I've heard five Obama supporters - all of whom also voted for all the California Democrats and for all the California taxes - complain that their taxes are going up next year. The cognitive dissonance is almost painful. All of them consistently embrace big spending - and, therefore Obama and his fellow Democrats - because they've been trained to believe that the spending on welfare, entitlements, and "select" businesses is a "good thing."
And here's a graphic making the rounds which is supposed to show that all the 'smart' states voted for Obama.
Yet when you look at their real world performance, the 'smart' states all seem headed for a giant fiscal implosion.
Some ideas such as spending 130% of your tax revenue year in and year out are so stupid that only the highly educated could possibly believe in them. Yet they're also likely too educated to learn any economic lessons from the coming tutorial in Real World Econ 101.
Worse is Better: All-out Middle East war as good as it gets
This is by Spengler back in September but nothing in his analysis has really changed since then.
If a contrarian thought might be permitted, consider the possibility that all-out regional war is the optimal outcome for American interests. An Israeli strike on Iran that achieved even limited success - a two-year delay in Iran's nuclear weapons development - would arrest America's precipitous decline as a superpower.
From the US perspective a region of dysfunctional (albeit radical) basket case countries would be the next best alternative to a true Arab spring.
In the long view of things, there is not much cause for optimism about the Muslim world. It contains two kinds of countries: those that can't feed their children, like Egypt, and those that have stopped having children, like Iran, Turkey, Algeria and Tunisia. Muslim nations seem to pass directly from infancy to senescence without stopping at adulthood, from the pre-modern directly to the post-modern, as I wrote in my book Why Civilizations Die (and Why Islam is Dying, Too).
There is no reason to expect most of the Muslim countries to go quietly into irreversible decline. All-out regional war is the likely outcome sooner or later. We might as well get on with it.
Some Positive News: Last Surviving Mumbai Terrorist Executed
Ajmal Kasab, the last surviving gunmen who took part in the Mumbai Massacre in 2008, has been executed according to the Indian government.
Only when he was being taken to the gallows did Ajmal Kasab lose his composure. "Allah kasam maaf karna. Aisi galthi dobara nahi hogi. (I swear by Allah, please forgive me. I won't make such a mistake again)," were the last coherent words uttered by Kasab as he was taken to the gallows at Yerawada central prison on Wednesday morning. Sources said Kasab then spoke incoherently for a while until the lever was pulled. He's in rehab and doing better. It turns out it was an ischemic stroke in his Pons.
Has an important battle ever been decided by single combat?
There are many tales of single combat battles but few documented cases:
Livy later reports a likelier tale of single combat circa 361 BC involving the Romans and the Gauls. The two armies were camped on opposite banks of a river when a Gaul of "extraordinary stature" approached the bridge between them and taunted the Romans, calling for the bravest to come out and fight. An average-looking Roman named Titus Manlius rose to the challenge and administered a fatal shellacking to his oversized opponent. The Gauls freaked and ran.
We hear little more about single combat till 1016 AD, when Edmund Ironside of England and the invading Canute of Denmark were repeatedly hurling their armies at each other with great loss of life but no definite results. According to one dubious 12th-century account, this ended when the weary English nobles, asked to prepare for yet another go-round, told the king: you want to win this one so bad, bubba, fight it yourself. Both leaders agreed, and they duked it out till Canute suggested calling it a draw, whereupon the two ruled their kingdoms together.
'Father of digital imaging' Bryce Bayer dies aged 83
You probably never heard of him but every time you use a digital camera you use his work.
Bryce Bayer, former Eastman Kodak scientist, and inventor of the Bayer Filter -- found with most modern digital image sensors -- has sadly recently passed. Bayer's work with Kodak left an indelible mark on almost every digital image you see today, both figuratively, and literally. His eponymous color filter, developed in 1976, used a mosaic layout of red green and blue filters that enables light sensors to create full color images. The design imitates the way the human eye perceives color, with twice as much green as red or blue, and the resulting output is then interpreted with "demosaicing" algorithms to produce an accurate, RGB image. Bayer's work also included significant contributions to other areas of digital photography, including storage, enhancement and printing. Bayer died on November 13th in Bath, Maine aged 83.

It's not the worst way to go:
A buxom woman has been accused of trying to kill her lawyer boyfriend. with her 38DD breasts.Franziska, 33 from Germany, who weighs nine stone is accused of 'attempted manslaughter with a weapon' after her 13-stone boyfriend claimed she tried to smother him with her breasts and pretend it was a sex game.
...'She was sitting on me naked and I was kissing her breasts. Suddenly she grabbed my head and pushed between her breasts with all of her force.
'I couldn't breathe any more, I must have turned blue. I couldn't tear myself free and I thought I was going to die.'
He said that with his last reserves of strength he had managed to extricate himself from the woman's vice-like grip and fled naked to a neighbour and demanded he called the police.
...I asked her why she wanted to smother me to death with her breasts and she told me: "Treasure - I wanted your death to be as pleasurable as possible."'

I say it is primarily because students in general don't have a lot of great critical thinking skills going into college. So when they get to college and they encounter these liberal professors, they don't have the tools to critically analyze their claims. They just accept whatever the authority figure says.

well, it's certainly 0% genetic, but I don't think it is 100% indoctrination.
I was at Barnes and Noble the other day and I was browsing through Lakoff's "Moral Politics" book. (yes, that Lakoff) Of course he does a poor job at explaining the moral reasoning behind conservatism, but I accept him at his word on his explanation of the moral reasoning behind liberalism, and that is, to liberals, government is the Nurturing Parent figure.
which kind of goes with why you have so many liberals who seem unconcerned with issues of liberty and freedom as they seek to grow and expand the state. to them, citizens are children, and the only liberty that we citizens ought to have is akin to the liberty that a child has while in a playpen. Government constructs the playpen, and provides the child with all of its essential needs, and then the child is "free" to do whatever it wishes - inside the playpen. that seems to be their concept of liberty.
so yeah, to them, single-payer health care is great - it relieves the citizens of that pesky burden of having to provide for their own needs, and allows them more "play time" in the playpen.
it is a twisted view of liberty but that is what I think is going on.

The correlation between the states' economic conditions and educational rankings makes a powerful argument that what passes for college "education" these days is not only a huge waste of money but downright harmful to society.
In other words, liberalism ruins everything it infects.

This year, due to impending financial ruin, I'm giving my home-made apple jelly. It's a lovely shade of rose, because I cook it with the peels before I strain it, and I use both cinnamon and cloves. Tastes rather like apple pie, so I expect I will have second requests. Plus, it costs next to nothing to make if you buy the apples in bulk from an orchard or pick your own.
The strawberry crop sucked around here, or I would give that as well.

The states that have a large percentage of college degrees should vote Republican, they are high earners and producers, not citizens that yearn for socialist government to deliver higher taxes and more food stamps. The problem is, people like Todd Akin and Rick Santorum are the face of the modern GOP.
We need a new coalition that can attract secular voters, and yes, that might mean we don't do as well in places like Mississippi or Alabama, but the GOP is now even having problems winning Senate seats in the Bible Belt.

I guess that would be reason they put up a map based on percentage of college grads in a state rather then just ask who won the majority of the college educated. Of course based on their own implicit assumption (college grads are superior to other people) that would make Romney the superior candidate.

Socons comprise a large bloc of voters. How many of Meggie Mac's hipster ghey friends do you think your new coalition can draw in to replace them?
The Dems win because they have a large coalition of voters who believe they have a right to free shit and others have an obligation to pay for said free shit. Single women voters are more inclined to believe in "mommy government" that takes care of their needs while leaving them with plenty of expendable income to go shopping

And yes I was very polite and mentioned details in her profile to show I read it too. None of this, hey baby come sit on my face! silliness. I only do that for Craigslist anyway.

CBD @#7, if you ever pass through the Paso Robles area, try to find some of the almond brittle made by a small company there (only distributed locally, far as I know, I always get some when I drop by Halter Ranch winery, which is on the west side of 101, out near Tablas Creek and before Justin.
On the educated/stupid part: my despair is well-founded, and thus complete and robust. I really do think it's much, much worse than just 20 years ago. "Education" is severely corrupted/politicized, as well as absolutely dumbed-down (critical thinking? what's that?). Large parts of science is politicized/corrupted. Journalism is long dead, and in areas of public policy has been replaced by (goofy, stupid, always wrong) advocacy, distortion, and worse (Rather-gate).
And in all these areas, those old enough to know better are often victims of their normal confidence in the division of labor. Example. A good friend's brother is the chair of a physics dept. at a major east coast university. Over the last few years, my friend has tried to nudge his brother towards looking at the outlandish claims, data distortion, and general unscientific approach characterizing most "climate science". The brother seems shocked at each revelation, literally disbelieving. "We would never do that!" sort of reaction - and correct, his discipline would never reach that sorry state because it is actually based on, uh - science.
That reminds me. This friend's other sibling and associates, not long ago, automatically, effortlessly, and idiotically just blurted out "oh, that's because of Proposition 13" when CA's fiscal disaster was being discussed. These are east coast people, not seriously political (not seriously policy-oriented or informed, either). But it's just a given that even these people, so far away, AUTOMATICALLY ascribe a fiscal mess to limits on taxes. THAT is how pervasive the distortion is in the public square (media, academia, culture).
I know it's easy and common for people here to rant and otherwise express their outrage at the nonsense engulfing the US. But I think I have really reached a point of complete alienation from most of my fellow citizens (incl. the siblings, who are your typical educated/idiot types).
There IS no learning curve, people. Just as probably 5% of the populace has the slightest idea of what the 2008 "financial crisis" really was about or its origins, I see no reason to believe that the probable financial train-wreck now looming will result in ANY "learning".
Sorry, and I'll stop, but just listen to some of the oral arguments before the SCOTUS on the ridiculous, disastrous, and obviously absurdly un-constitutional health care "reform". I listened to about 10 min. of it - a jaw-dropping horror show. Nobody - not a single justice, neither counsel, clearly had the slightest idea of what insurance really is. On top of that, their shockingly illiterate discussion had NOTHING to do with the proper role of the court, the govt., or the plaintiffs. Bottom line: I think many generally smart and right-thinking people resemble slightly-boiled frogs, who don't realize how idiotic things have become. I don't see Mad Max times ahead, but I don't see any reason to expect the cretinized electorate, the dumbed-down and corrupt public square, or the illiterate elites to improve in my lifetime. Doom.

In most programs, there is no longer any historical core curriculum -- in any subject at all, including, of all things, history. They're getting a degree without an education.
Literature and philosophy are a great background for a deep understanding of economics, or even business administration. But you have to study it. They don't.

The real issue is that most architecture professors couldn't produce a decent set of documents if their life depended upon it, and so they turn out graduates who cannot actually perform in the profession. Lots of screwy theory, but not one practical skill.
I went from architecture school to the CoE, and my first serious project was renovating a sewage treatment plant. At the end of my five year tour, I knew more about building than all of my professors combined.
Students come out of school thinking they are the greatest designers of all time, only to find out they can't do anything they think they can because a. the building code is strict and b. newbies get to do toilet room details and hardware schedules. Big bosses get to be designy guys. Oh well.

Well, the whole "fiscal conservative, social liberal" is called a libertarian. And generally speaking, the hard-core libertarians usually (a) grow up and realize that yes, there is more to liberty than simply personal wish fulfillment, it also takes an ordered society and a respect for traditions which got us here in the first place (i.e., drifts to conservatism), or (b) don't grow up, continues to be a self-centered nihilist but still thinks that "someone ought to take care of the poor", which leads to liberalism

Paso Almonds - 888-549-9126 (hope this is isn't some code of ethics violation around here? I have no connection to the company other than buying a few bags of their product each year, depending on how many times I get to the central coast)
Transitioning seamlessly to another topic ..... Jeepers, I'm too lazy to do it, but go check the flash/preliminary exit poll data re vote shares in the recent election. Romney did very well with the higher-income demo, as well as even with white yutes (I believe he either tied or exceeded all-time GOP voting %s in both demos).
And since MO and IN were mentioned - WTF, people? Behold how f***ed we really are. There aren't a few thousand intelligent voters in those two states, who understand how their feral govt. (incl. the legislative branch) actually works, to vote strategically in these two cases? Who gives a f**k if some candidate says a few bizarre things on issues never to be part of Senate business? In 2012? In 2012? IN 2012?! FFS.
The missing 7 million or whatever, and the voters of MO and IN, to me, share the blame for furthering the degradation and decline of the US. As previously lamented, what I see as essentially a permanent degradation. Unless someone can explain to me how we re-educate 200 million people in common sense, decency, economics, history, logic, self-governance and freedom, international affairs, and sundry little items like not allowing ignorance, envy, or racism to guide you in your duties as a citizen.

Of course if we approached educating educators rationally pre-HS would be a 2 year degree with a 2 year internship, and HS would be 2 years of teaching, 2 years of the subject you will be teaching.
A Master's degree to teach? Seriously? I have to teach people consistently working in the private sector and the presumption is anyone can do it without special training beyond knowing the subject.

I don't have a problem with Libertarians. I have problems with intellectually inconsistent libertarians. Libertarians that admit law has a purpose to protect us from each other (Crime defined by a natural person suffering an injury to life, liberty or property) yet conveniently turn a blind eye to the right to live of the unborn declaring them summarily and arbitrarily non-persons. Libertarians that resent the concept of government regulation of human relations, yet, when asked about marriage, rather than assert it is not the function of government to recognize, sanction, encourage, or regulate any form of human relationship, they seek to broaden the existing government control of relationships to include new types; without realizing they are setting the stage to allow government control of all types of private relationships.
No I don't have problems with libertarians per se. Just the stupid ones.

Anyway, in those days at certain schools, teachers did not receive the current Bachelor of Science in Education, BSEd, but a B.Ed. It was left over from the days when such schools were Normal Schools with two-year degrees, oddly, turning out some noteworthy teachers. That was before "pedagogy" and the Ed.D. Administrators around here all well - PhEd.
That's right, a Bed degree. Sadly, they weren't any smarter or quicker to learn there than anywhere else.

Well, one of the issues is that modern materials and engineering practices allow for much more complicated designs than in the past.
The modern skyscraper would not be possible with just wood, brick and mortar. You need high quality steel, and an array of technological advances to build it and maintain activity in it.

My experience with a local architecture firm was that they dealt with "big picture" items and had a local engineering firm prep blueprints. As an example, there are a ton of tilt-up buildings in Silicon Valley.....if they have little square accents of tile, they're likely designed by this architect. All the "behind the scenes" elements such as roof design were done by engineers (you can't typically see the roof of a tilt-up except by air -- the sides of the walls are a few feet higher). They sent people out to test the spray-on texture and verify the paint color and such.....but not inspect the glu-lams, or check the rebar.

I won't. The study of Philosophy, as such, is what has deluded most of man to think that structured society is not only possible, but preferable, so I consider it in general alongside of Political Science when I think of thoughts about the subject. As a matter of practical application I consider it very poorly. If you did very well with Philosophy as your primary area of study, good for you. I would say that the average BA in Philosophy is in for a rude awakening at graduation. And if a philosophy student taking chemistry (which would seem to suggest a general ed class, also meaning usually done in the first two years) can actually give a decent answer to the question as to whether we can really know anything (one would say there certainly is no definitive and final answer on that subject) I would be very surprised. Moreover success in investment, doesn't require any special knowledge about philosophy. To the extent that you have been successful can likely be better attributed to you as a person, and your abilities, rather than any time you might have spent pondering the nature of metaphysics while earning a degree.
So no. My dim view endures. And I think the modern philosophy department at the university level has but two goals. Producing Doctorate candidates from the talented and like minded, and leftist foot soldiers from the duffers. I wonder how many occupiers called themselves philosophers as that was the focus of their undergraduate degree.

The law, itself, is 2700 pages. Most of it is outline, calling for regulations to be issued by everyone from the IRS to the HHS to various states in order to make it actually function. Since Every Single Regulation is going to gore someone's ox, they're all being contested vociferously by every "special interest" group imaginable (sample LGBT concern: is sexual reassignment mental health counseling for the underage covered?) and every voting bloc (conservatives: are we really supposed to pay for this BS?). Accordingly, that 2700 pages of law has blossomed into easily 500,000 catfights, all being performed simultaneously, and all at various stages of being LATE -- because it was all supposed to fall into place like a key turning in a lock.
There is no definitive list of regs, and there won't be until the dust has settled. In the meantime, we have YEARS of clusterfuck coming in like a tidal wave.

Posted by: Ether at November 25, 2012 08:12 PM (g7C10)
No I don't. And won't get that. Because I cannot answer as to why any human has any rights, yet they have no rights. The question of law as a arbitrary arbiter, or a code that tries to accomplish justice is paramount to humanity. If it is the former, it does not deserve my allegiance, fealty, or respect.

1. I didn't use "Modern" to modify "Philosophy" it was used to modify "Department": Meaning a philosophy department of modern times.
You think my disdain of the subject means I am wholly unfamiliar with it? That Ethics, and Politics do not occupy a space of pride alongside Two Treatises of Government and the Federalist Papers in my Library? That I might not know Pythagoras was a Philosopher and to an extent a cultist? No I wave my hand curtly at the study as the elite of the subject wholly reject or ignore the philosophies I find the most relevant, meaningful, and coincidentally practical. It has soured my mouth not to the learning of philosophy, which in earnest has been an interest for some years, just to the University study of Philosophy, which at least by my anecdote and observation, by and large gave up the search for wisdom and replaced it with a search for power. They themselves fell prey to the mythical ring of Gyges; Having first obtained influence in modern affairs and they had the intent at seeking justice, eventually broadened the idea of "justice" until it meant more and more power to the intellectual class. As we see both persons the moral and immoral are the same, the only difference is the time frame to totalitarianism.

Her mom is one of my dearest friends -- but is an odd sort of lib. She'll vote the party line, but (a) runs her own business; (b) has 3 great kids; (c) takes care of her own; (d) decided that the BH and I should be her kids' godparents; (e) kept her kids out of public education; (f) does not gloat to us about the state of politics in California and the US; and so on. Her brother collects guns; her sister homeschooled. Except for the reflexive anti-Republicanism, she's a whole lot like....a conservative.
She allows us an active role with the kids, and we've tried to go beyond surface talking points and help them understand how things work -- everything from "always have a plan, a backup plan, and a bailout plan whenever you start a fire -- and know where your resources are" to "here's the guys rebuilding our kitchen -- hi, guys!; hi, kids! -- here's how we take care of them -- there's fans up in the attic so they don't cook, we have plenty of water, we make them take breaks (while we keep paying), we give them dust masks.....and here's the beautiful work they do, and this is especially nice...."
They are great kids, and we do what we can to have them grow up right. I can recall one "I hate W" talk that was like a punch in the gut, but we kept questioning and found it to be just a slogan heard somewhere. Kids, y'know?
But the young lady who's a duck isn't likely to be in an Occupy camp. From what I can tell, she's working harder than I did when I was in college -- and I did a nominal 4-year degree in 3-1/2 years while about half of my cohort did theirs in 5 . I just hope the program is worthy of her.

Sorry to hear about this, and it really sucks going through all the red tape to get anything done. I had a family member that had a real bad substance abuse problem, and there was very little we could do. The cops would only do something if this person became a danger to themselves. Being a danger to everyone else by driving or doing stupid shit was okay, but if they talked about suicide, then they would get involved.
Lesson learned, if you want to have a loved one committed for treatment, lie and tell the cops/magistrate that the person talked about committing suicide. But a word of caution, it only works once.

Preliminary regulations are issued by each part of government. For instance, here's where you can start for HHS: http://www.hhs.gov/regulations/index.html . The problem is, there's gazillions of them, and they're everywhere. The last place to look is with doctors -- half of them [overeducated] still believe [overeducated] that nothing bad [overeducated] will ever happen to them [overeducated] because the government is involved [overeducated].

It gets even funnier. When I was in Santa Barbara, auditing wastewater plants (the firm where I worked had a specialty), I was living in shared quarters with two guys [and 1200 gallons of fish] who worked at tropical fish stores......where filtration and purification of closed systems was vitally important. And one of the "analog" tests of the output of one plant was surviving fish in the processing channel.

Most engineering programs also do Co-Ops now which are paid internships. You actually go out and work in the field for a company, or government or university. I had the typical 4 year program but with the Co-ops happening on alternating semesters it actually took 4 and a half.

At the peak of the summer it never really gets dark, just kinda dusk for a while and then light again. Then the time changes pretty fast. During much of the year, except right at the equinox, it is 5-6 minutes lighter/darker than the day before. On Dec 20-21, there is daylight from about 9:30 AM to about 4 PM.
So, the most important thing is to get outside in the day. Fresh air makes all the difference. A lot of us also take Vit D supplements, and some folks keep full spectrum lights around.
A lot of the dark issues are offset by the holidays. There is a lot of activity and cheerful people and it goes right by without much notice.
In Jan/Feb, a lot of people go on vacation. All year round there are a lot of direct flights to HI and the islands are always packed with Alaskans.
The weirdest thing isn't the dark. The weirdest thing is there is no such thing as a warm night. If it dark, it isn't warm, and if it is warm, it isn't dark.

Disagree. Laws punishing murder are "preaching and imposing morality". Any existing law is an imposition of a moral standard. Even a complete lack of laws is a moral standard of sorts. (Which ends up being the Law of the Jungle. Can't get away from laws.)
If men were angels, we wouldn't need government. We know men aren't angels, so we do need a government, and governments (and politicians) pop up wherever men gather. The key concept that differentiates American conservatism from the rest is that we're for a limited government.

Two significant studies have been done on this quesion, "Who's more stupid on economics, conservatives or liberals?" They've been based on accumulated and ongoing results from the Pew Foundation's polls. Answer, by a country mile: "Liberals are economic RETARDS." Not surprising given the psychology and belief system of the Left. Their world can't happen in this one. They deny this one. And you knew it all along, didn't you, Christians? Who stand accused by these cretins for believing in Flying Spaghetti Monsters and so forth? You are the last ones surprised.

Not in agreement. To me, it all comes down to just one question: who owns your life? Murder is wrong because it is taking a life you don't own. Slavery is wrong because it is siphoning off a life you don't own.
Morality doesn't have to be time honored, or traditional in any form. There is a simple way to check the morality of any issue --- would you still be for a law/policy/activity whether or not it is being done (or has to be done): a) for you, b) by you, or c) to you? Note that almost all leftists tend to fail this test at almost every turn. Note that socons and libertarians rarely do.
In the end, socons create a problem that is very difficult to overcome -- the biggest problem with leftists if they tend to favor a society without any adults and imagine a Big Mommy govt that will take care of everyone. When socons favor Bid Daddy govt that will keep everyone in line, they make the position of leftists seem somewhat plausible.
The voices that point out that history actually included times when people were supposed to grow up are not entirely wrong. Of course, there are multiple sides to the point, including:
a) in the mid 19th century, a person who owned their own body and had the money could buy just about any drug over the counter at practically any age,
b) in the mid 19th century, you might find yourself on trial and see the judge/jury passing white lighting back and forth rather than listening to what you had to say,
c) Carrie Nation and that batch of dingbats did a lot of good and a lot of harm in a lot of ways, and not all libertarians are wrong when they point it out,
d) people who claim to own your decisions about any one part of your life often can't find any reasonable line to stop -- they may not be able to run their own life, but they damn sure can run yours.

Murder is wrong ...
This is not a moral statement?
To clarify, I disagree with the core philosophy of libertarianism, as I understand them from reading libertarians. I do think we can create a coalition and work together for a limited government.
If men were angels, we wouldn't need gov't. Do you see evidence of angel-hood around you? Was Obama elected by angels? Do those people instantly become angels once the Leviathan is dismantled?
Socons are fighting a cultural war, and politics cannot be neatly seperated from culture. It is a failure of social conservatives that we surrendered education, media and other cultural institutions to leftists, but it does not follow that a surrender of the political institutions would improve our position or achieve our objectives.

When we moved into the place, in '97, there was a plan. Exterior walls were Behr's "New England Grey" in flat and exterior doors were Behr's "Provincetown" in satin (or v-v for the colors, I don't remember). Trim was "Pine Tree" or some such.....but when we re-roofed, the gutters got done in a different green.
So, now, there are a few problems: (1) Behr had to switch colorants and bases because of California anti-VOC regs; (2) sunbleached colors don't match new colors; (3) old green trim and gutters are different; (4) some of the "touch-up" paints we have are over a decade old.

socons are losing a cultural war, and in no small part because they refuse to accept good allies.
libertarians can reach leftists, if given a real chance. when a libertarian is explaining life to a dipshit leftist, it usually all boils down to -- "you know son, your biggest problem is that you are just refusing to grow the fuck up." -- And, while that attempt to reach the moonbat is going on, there is usually some socon that comes along and gets in the way of the explanation and condemns the libertarian for giving it a try.
food for thought -- real adults, that take full responsibility for the ownership of their own lives -- maybe, just maybe, are not the people that concern you.

The basic issue is that we will never again see a candidate for limited government. The reason is that such a candidate will never again be elected. The locusts have won. Let them have their victory. It will be short lived. After that, who knows? Not me.

every election there is some ralph reed or jerry falwell sort that claims "we would have won" except their group stayed home. I am not about insulting them. I can let them live in peace for an eternity.
I absolutely know the meaning of MYOB, and I practice it all day, every day. The socons I actually know do that, too. And they help people who need help as long as a person will help themselves, too. Yet, for many, when the subject turns to politics, MYOB goes out the window. To me, that is a damn shame because the MYOB is at the very heart of the ethic that makes it all worthwhile.
I am sorry that you are offended by it. I really am. However, if a few voices lamenting the loss of the MYOB ethic is enough to fracture society there wasn't much left anyway.

time will tell. If you think having my own opinion within the privacy of my own home is more than they can bear, maybe you are right. doesn't match the people I know IRL
Remember, this whole conversation tonight started with the general assertion that socons don't need libertarians, and the unstated but certainly implied premise that libertarians are somehow a lower form of life than socons. From there you lumped me in with Frum and McCain. Oh well, no one ever said the internet was fair.

Communication is what the receiver assigns -- so let me try to relay how it came out on my end --
you jumped in with something that has been bothering you -- that the socons are getting pushed around, and it was addressed to me. In fact, you said it was "pathetic" and your message read to me as an admonishment to silence.
Now, you have changed my message, which read "socons refuse good allies" into the exact opposite, "that socons are not good enough allies." Further, that I claim victim status. I will table that discussion for now.
Back to the point -- If you are telling me that socons are such fragile little flowers that they cannot exist in a world where someone agrees with them about 85% of most things and 100% of all the most important things, then I can only tell you again that it does not match the people I know in real life. I am related to them, I live with them, I love them, I work with them, and when appropriate I pray with them. They are just not like what you are asserting. They don't quit, and they vote. Neither me, nor anyone else, can have the effect on them that you are suggesting.
If the socons you know are different in that way, then I can only conclude that you and I must travel in very different social circles.
Also, I checked, and I am still a person.

Was not my intent to engage a flame-war.
Just pushed some buttons in me that might be new to you, older than the sands, and probably trod to death by wiser men than you or I about 400 yrs ago.

Sure. Sprinkle in some vulgarity, agree with the leftist principles that condemn unborn to murder, agree that gov't needs to get in the business of recognizing homosexual relationships, and soon you'll make a principled libertarian out of a leftist.
Who is willing to claim the cool "libertarian" label, but still think it's a wonderful idea for the gov't to step in to fix all of life's problems. You let him keep all of his socially leftist principles, after all, on all those "consenting adult" issues.
We have fundamentally different principles, and socons, as conservatives, aren't going to deny their base principles for political gain. You want to convert leftists into libertarians, but you seem to think the existence of socons prevents it. If so, you're on as quixotic a quest as us socons. The MSM will always remind leftists that evil scary socons exist. They will gin up the outrage, manufacture quotes, and all the other things they did this past election.
"Be less scary" isn't practical advice, because it's about the base principles, and the media/educational institutions will frame those principles with a leftist PoV. "Shut up" doesn't work even if you got the socons to do it, because the media will find something. This is the hand we're dealt by life, and I don't see any simple solutions.

But because the last few generations haven't experienced "real" liberalism (ie 70% tax rates, rushing inflation, etc) they feel comfortable voting Democrat.
They look at it as a luxury that's worth paying for, like going to a nice restaurant where you over pay for a glass of wine. Yes, Obama might mean a 3% raise in their taxes, but they're not religious and to them , Republicans are the "Church Party".
My problem with the modern SoCon wing is that it's largely now just abstract symbolism on a single issue that's costing us votes. Abortion has about as much of a chance to become criminalized as homosexuality. And don't even get me started on the Akin, Santorum, Huckabee stance regarding rape and abortion. That nonsense easily cost Romney 1-2% nationally.
Social conservatism WAS popular because there were also issues like getting tough on crime, capital punishment, school busing, etc, that appealed to lower income voters; but those issues are now largely irrelevant because "we" won. Now it's 90% abortion, and it to a more secular America, it's costing us heavily.
So why exactly are we losing more and more voters of an issue that's more of a statement of faith than a real issue of public policy? Because when you look at those two lists, the country is only going to look a lot more like the "blue" list than the "red" list.

If communication is what the receiver assigns, there is no communication.
Hrm, if the first part was true, the sender wouldn't have to say anything at all!
"I take your silence to mean that you are okay with me taking the balance of your bank account for a night of Valurite and pudding."

Tjen again, since you got both my interpretation of your signal and my signal wrong, maybe you're right, there is no communication.

Yes, communication is what the receiver assigns. I am surprised that you would contend otherwise. Not only is that little chestnut taught in speech classes, it is correct. If you don't think so -- say the following sentence out loud while emphasizing one word at a time:"I didn't say he hit his wife."
when you emphasize "I" the message really is: I ... (I am not the one that said it, but it was said.)
and similarly:
....didn't ..... (a strong denial that I said it)
....say ... (I didn't say it, but I did accuse him of it in writing)
....he.... (wasn't him, he had his brother hit his wife for him)
.....hit..... (he didn't hit her, but he did throw a bucket of cold water in her face)
....his... (he actually hit his neighbor's wife)
...wife (he left his wife alone but he did hit his mistress).
