At least if you're a single mom. And the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare admits as much:
"the single mom is better off earning gross income of $29,000 with $57,327 in net income & benefits than to earn gross income of $69,000 with net income and benefits of $57,045."
If you're a PA single mom, have a job and make between $29K and $70K, you're a fool actually making yourself poorer by working.

Dennis Prager: 'Leftism is a Religion'
I know that certain pundits claim that leftism is a mental disorder but here I think Prager makes the stronger case that it truly is a religion - the most dynamic one in the world. Does anyone doubt that Leftism has its own belief system, moral judgments with angels and devils along with taboos and shared rituals?
You cannot understand the Left if you do not understand that leftism is a religion. It is not God-based (some left-wing Christians' and Jews' claims notwithstanding), but otherwise it has every characteristic of a religion. The most blatant of those characteristics is dogma. People who believe in leftism have as many dogmas as the most fundamentalist Christian.One of them is material equality as the preeminent moral goal. Another is the villainy of corporations. The bigger the corporation, the greater the villainy. Thus, instead of the devil, the Left has Big Pharma, Big Tobacco, Big Oil, the "military-industrial complex," and the like. Meanwhile, Big Labor, Big Trial Lawyers, and - of course - Big Government are left-wing angels.
And why is that? Why, to be specific, does the Left fear big corporations but not big government?
The answer is dogma - a belief system that transcends reason. No rational person can deny that big governments have caused almost all the great evils of the last century, arguably the bloodiest in history. Who killed the 20 to 30 million Soviet citizens in the Gulag Archipelago - big government or big business? Hint: There were no private businesses in the Soviet Union.
So why isn't Leftism recognized as a religion? Because it declares itself to be a rational un-religion:
One reason is that leftism is overwhelmingly secular (more than merely secular: It is inherently opposed to all traditional religions), and therefore people do not regard it as a religion. Another is that leftism so convincingly portrays itself as solely the product of reason, intellect, and science that it has not been seen as the dogma-based ideology that it is. Therefore the vast majority of the people who affirm leftist beliefs think of their views as the only way to properly think about life.
That, in turn, explains why anyone who opposes leftism is labeled anti-intellectual, anti-progress, anti-science, anti-minority, and anti-reason (among many other pejorative epithets): Leftists truly believe that there is no other way to think.

We plan to pursue all available options, including an appeal, once our focus is no longer on the 12/04 hearing in Virginia.

Well love is a pretty strong term - perhaps not-a-complete-waste-of-time/mildly amusing is more apt description. And Twilight is just a damned filthy lie.
So believe me when I say that I've never seen one of those movies. That being said...I've also told people I've never seen Notting Hill or Pitch Perfect. I once even told a cop that no, I didn't see that nice Italian man shoot that snitch and dump the body in the river my house overlooked, but that was for different, far more disturbing reasons. Point being, sometimes chick flicks are actually pretty enjoyable--the dialogue is witty, there's hot trim to stare at and sooner or later the main chick usually ends up in her underwear.
Well Notting Hill and Pitch Perfect were pretty good and even Bridget Jones' Diary had its redeeming moments....from what I've heard from my p-whipped friends.

Another point here is that sovereignty is force, and that if Christians and Jews don't keep Jerusalem, Muslims will.
If pilgrimage is important to Christianity, it is in the Christian interest to keep Jerusalem and the routes to Jerusalem under pro-Christian control. That means that Jerusalem must fall under Christian control directly or, second-best, under a trusted neutral party.
To that, the state of Israel is to be trusted as a protector of Christian holy places. The Israelis have been blameless in their handling of the Holy Sepulchre. By contrast the Palestinians have completely failed to keep up Nativity - desecrated it in fact - let alone the shrines common to Jews and Christians.
If pilgrimage matters to Christianity, and there are no Christian churches willing to take over and rule Jerusalem directly, then the Christian churches should unite in support of Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem.

The pilgrimage is as much a control think as a leftover pagan ritual (though it is both). If you are supposed to go to the seat of the Caliphate you better be on good terms with the Caliph when you get there.
Unfortunately for Muhammed though the center of the Arab world moved out of Mecca right after his death.
I'll say this, if you look at Islam not as a religion but as a tool to build a war state out of a disparate group of petty warlords in the 600s it is almost perfect.

There is no legitimate reason for Jerusalem to be an Islamic Holy Site. They invented some bullshit dream of Mohammed's to justify claiming it, but the real reason is the same as that for the Ground Zero Mosque: to appropriate and desecrate the holy sites of other religions.
Also see the Bamiyan Buddhas. Or the latest asshole whacknoodle Muslim cleric calling for the destructionof the Pyramids and Sphinx (and they already tried that with the latter once before - its nose didn't just fall off on its own).

Yes, Islam was all about organizing the Arab to be a nation of looting thieves rather than an assortment of looting tribes.
Jihad is sanctified razza, the Arab on the move, stealing what he could not create or build himself.
Islam for the most part re-inforces all the typical cultural characteristics of the Arab. Mohammed stole or glued a few of the qualities of Judaism and Christianity, but pretty much perverts anything else.
It's interesting when something about the Middle East is on You Tube and the commenters and their comments about Islam. The barbarians are out there and not afraid to strut their stuff.

One of the wonderful things about AOSHQ is the perfect egalitarianism of the comments. While I might detect the sex of a particular commenter based on his or her nic, the vast majority of the time I am mildly surprised when someone actually points out what lies between their legs(metaphorically of course...usually). I then forget immediately. For instance, "fluffy" is, apparently, a man, but i never remember that, because let's face it, fluffy is a faggy, terminally ghey nic.....

I couldn't access that list but of the ones I've seen the horde talking about, I've seen Titanic and Sweet Home Alabama. I recognize the pic at the top from Romey and Michelle's High School Reunion, which was funny (saw it once). I have seen the first 2 Twilight movies once each, under duress. I like a (very) vew chick movies but mostly enjoy shoot and blow up the bad guy movies, zombies, and scifi and some fantasy.

I ended up on some women's relationship site the other day and noticed the most common comments were that men are fat, immature, only interested in sex, and bitterly full of hate for women - and in the aggregate there is some truth to it.
Of course as a man I can see plenty of similar faults - many women I see are intentionally unattractive, masculine, drama queens (I know an odd combo) and bitterly full of hate for men.
It is almost as if there is no interest in either side in making yourself appealing to the other sex anymore and no one is happy about it...

Oh, absolutely. I'm a guy and I like westerns and war movies, etc., and Clueless is hilarious. It's a take-off on a Jane Austen novel.
And I'd very highly recommend Romy and Michelle's Class Reunion. A GREAT buddy film. I'm surprised they didn't do a sequel. Very funny dialouge.
I would argue that both are far, far better than Sleepless in Seattle or My Best friend's Wedding.

My elderly aunt passed away last Sunday. One thing I learned from her and from my grandmother (born in 1897) is exactly how easy we have it. They were busy figuring out how they were going to eat; bitching on websites about how horrible men were wasn't exactly in their schedule. If you were stuck with a real bastard, I guess you might divorce him (plenty of people did, my grandmother said that Burning Bed shit was utter crap, but she wore the pants in that whole town, not just her family). But most of the tiime you were trying to raise kids and figure out how to eat.
My aunt was convinced that Obama won because white people won't grow up. She said it used to be that by the time you could vote (21) you were married and probably had a kid, and were worried about the future. Now 21 year olds are babes in arms and 30 year olds still haven't settled down. You have too many voters who aren't grown up. Her 2 cents. Not sure JEF winning didn't push her over the edge.

I have come to understand some things lately:
Demonrats vote like politics IS their religion, cuz, it is...Duh...
Demonrats like gubmint and gubmint jobs cuz it's work that feels like religious activity to them. Working in the vineyards of the Cause, so to speak...
Conservatives tend to want to work and live private lives separately from each other until the two meet, like in a business.
The Demonrats like to work in jobs where they are surrounded and buoyed by their beliefs. gubmint, NFPs, etc...
Conservatives like laissez faire gubmint and little as possible of it. Faith is for God and Church.
Demonrats detest most Churches and God , and go forgod with a little G, as in god, and church with little c, as in manageable: in a box. Human regulations and rules can do the rest of the heavy lifting from their point of view.
Conservatives like live and let live excepting 'socons', it seems. Few of the Demonrats I meet are willing to let others live without the benefit of their blinding brilliance. So they are almost all 'sodems', as regards supporting the main Dem propaganda points. They all like spending, entitlements, factions and divisiveness and most condone cheating "if it means getting the needed result", since they usually have situational morals at best.
The Left, in its long pursuit of power and control, with its over-arching strain of OCD control mania and its thin-to-none moral fiber, has purposely destroyed the US as a functioning society and nation. One of the founders said “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” That was John Adams. He was right and the Left is wrong.

Death will surely come, and great darkness. And that darkness, that will snuff out the God Given Light of America, will snuff out the light of most free or somewhat free nations.
As America retreats and falls, darkness will rise and expand: it is a symbiotic equation. And the world stands to lose as much as America and Americans do.
Sadly, most people don' realize how much American power and influence keeps other nations free. But the Demonrats do, and as surely as they embrace the Left and socialistic Fascism, they embrace the coming darkness.
Being Godless, the Demonrats, having only little 'g' gods, like their politicians and causes, they need the darkness. It is made for them: it is who they are.
As it turns out, it will advance the cause of God, as the Good Book says. So while I mourn the coming darkness and the heavy price we'll pay, it's necessary, and a better day will come out of it.

OK, serious now, I'm pretty sure the LiB folks are advocating letting the system crash and then trying to build something from the pieces. History isn't kind to this approach, but I'm guessing they are just frustrated at what is going on and don't know what to do to reverse the trend.
I don't know that the trend can be reversed. I think no matter what your philosophy we are going to have to ride this into the ground and hope that there is something left to work with when we hit.

It ticked me off.
Instapundit linked to some Psychology Today piece quite a while ago that had to do with positive reinforcement or something similar so I commented something like, "That was a very intelligent article, Dr. So-and-So. Would you like a chocolate?" and I socked it as Dr Sheldon Cooper and when I checked back later in the day they had removed it! Even if they didn't get the Big Bang Theory reference, it still fit the context. Spoiled sports. (And I misread the original comments as "have a chocolate" thus this rambling anecdote.)

There's one legitimate purpose to letting it burn: Trying to get either the rest of the American public to come to grips with the fact liberals' fiscal policies won't work.
Sure, there should be easier ways of doing that...for instance, one of our leaders taking the time to explain that we can't fix the deficit by taxing the rich even if we wanted to (I'm pretty sure I could do this in 30 seconds flat)...but apparently none of those are happening or look like they're going to happen. So, that leaves us with letting it burn.
Once we're at that point, continue what we've been trying to do pre-letting-it-burn.

Attempt to survive and figure out where we are once the transition has happened. An economic system based on credit must clear bad debts periodically (the wave of defaults and bank failures that accompany normal recessions) and can collapse completely if the fake growth period goes on too long. Which is where we are.
Where we also are is the inevitability of government spending, in terms of real stuff, contracting to what it can afford, like anyone else. All the whining about fiscal cliff is basically a lament that the lies of government can't continue forever.
"Let It Burn" is in popular use because it sounds better than "Watch It Burn." It has to happen anyway, so we may as well pretend to invite it.

Sequestration is, of course, very scary when it comes to defense. But it is guaranteed budget cuts. We may have to sacrifice it for the near-term, until we can build a coalition with a few "reasonable" pragmatic Dems.
You want to know what the fiscal cliff is?
It's the interest paid on this year deficit: $260,100,000,000 (*about $71 per month per every man, woman and child).
It's the current $16T in debt. $1T+ deficit spending each year.
We are already over the fiscal cliff. We are ALL truely f'd. Let. It. Burn.

I loved the movie for that reason, and I've been a Titanic buff for years. It's the closest I'll ever come to walking on her decks, at least until 3D holographic virtual reality movies come along.

I couldn't watch it, myself -- I already know the ending: the ship sinks. Every moment would be tinged with grief. I had to read "A Night To Remember" in High School, and further relived it in my Jacques Futrelle phase.

One of the many fun things about being in business is that you learn about loan covenants. You go to a bank, hat-in-hand, looking for money to do something, and you get handed this telephone-book of crap.
If Bank A loans you the money for this project, you promise to put all your other money in Bank A. You promise to never give your customers more than 30-day terms. The reason is two fold.
One: simply not eating all of the garbage in the SAD will bring health improvements. You can go from the SAD to a vegan diet and improve your health and feel great... for a while.
Two: the one or two item only diets are an easy way to alter your brain's food reward system. So, you eat less even though you feel full.
It's not healthy per se, and it's definitely not a long term health strategy, but it's an interesting experiment.

Most simply, a religion is any systematized framework whereby people try to understand and explain life, the universe and everything, even though basic facts are unobtainable by proven observation but must be taken on faith (whether adherents realize or admit it or not) and then seek to live accordingly...and, as is often the case with modern atheists, to force others to live accordingly or at least not exhibit evidence of competing faiths.
In that sense, atheism falls under the umbrella just as much as any other faith.
Specifically, atheism has at its core many faith-based dogmas which cannot be questioned without penalty of being put at odds with the devout. It has its own form of priesthood to whom adherents look for the revelation of truths; this priesthood is largely comprised of scientists and philosophers but now includes others like that arrogant English dude. From the dogmas and priests, atheists derive the many moralistic judgments they will not hesitate to levy against unbelievers. Atheism's 'scriptures' are whatever are passed down from its priesthood on high. It even has its own evangelists seeking to convert others to the faith and away from all others; its own angels to be admired and devils to be attacked; taboos not to be broken.
Looked at that way, atheism very much is a religion. It just does not have a deity as such, even though atheism - whenever it's held absolute rule - always make the State into a "God" that causes people die at the "command" of that "God" just as surely as they did in the service to the "God" of medieval Catholics or John Calvin, or today for Muslims and "Allah." ALL of them killed people for, in one way or another, violating the majority's beliefs regarding the will of whatever "God" they worshiped. Atheists are absolutely not exempt from this.
