Overnight Open Thread (11-5-2012) – Election Jitters Edition
— Maetenloch

Now you might think that the one place you could go and not hear anything more about the election and polls would be a foreign country - but you'd be wrong.

There's been fairly regular coverage all during the day here in Germany and in fact they actually covered an Obama rally in OH live. The media here is so biased that it makes MSNBC seem fair-mindedly middle of the road. Just one of the minor forms of bias is the fact that Obama statements  are generally translated directly into German while Romney statements are always summarized (negatively) by analysts. As best I can tell from my limited German Mitt Romney is actually George Bush wearing a CEO skin and he hates dogs, brown people, and uninsured children.

So it's not surprising that Romney is losing here to Obama by 92% to 8%. I suspect even a Pol Pot-Jeff Dahmer ticket could eke out at least 5% support. The few Germans I've talked to about the election seem genuinely mystified that Romney is considered to even have a shot at beating Obama. The media has left Germans completely unprepared for anything other than an Obama victory so I suspect that Wednesday morning to going to be quite schockierend for them. And then I'll get to find out whether schadenfreude really does taste better in it's native land.

Here's another view from Germany.

And it's as bad in France but at least Le Monde has broached the mere possibility that Obama could lose to Le Mormon.

All that said - don't get cocky kids.

But....it probably wouldn't be a bad idea get your Victory/Life Day reservations on Endor in before tomorrow evening. And have your pudding bath all warmed up and ready to go.

Occupy Mom Get $85K from Divorce, Joins the 20%

Sure Stacey Hessler abandoned her husband and children in Florida to go protest in New York (and occupy the tent of a young male occupier), but clearly she deserves most of her husband's retirement account.

The mother-of-four who made headlines last year leaving her children to go join Occupy Wall Street is divorcing her husband and cashing in on his banking-earned riches in the process.
Stacey Hessler cites protesting as her profession and famously devoted herself to the Occupy movement, demonstrating against the very banks behind her recently increased cash-flow.
She walks away from former banker Curtiss Hessler with a total of $85,385 from his stock-filled retirement fund and bank account.

But then he keeps the kids, the house, and her out of his life forever. So maybe it's worth it.

Curtis will keep the $65,000 house under the settlement and assumes the $13,000 mortgage.
He gets sole custody of their four children: Peyton,18, Kennedy,16, Sullivan, 14, and Veda, 8.
They can see their mom at any time but only in a 'safe environment' the papers dictate.

20 If you're goin to go generic, just go ahead and invest in tobacco and cigarette tubes. $1.30 a pack for me, instead of $8 for real ones, they taste better, and less nicotine means I don't pitch a fit if I don't smoke for a few hours. I suggest getting a Top cigarette maker, Premiere tobacco, and any kind of 100s cigarette tubes. Cheap easy fun to make and cheap. Plus you can get some hipster DIY ethic cred, which is none of your rubbish.

21 Re: Germany Having spent 4 1/2 years in Germany, I'm not surprised Obama has 92%. Trying to explain a conservative position over there isn't futile though, but it really has to be done in German, and there aren't enough people who have that ability around. The Germans are proud of their social services, etc, but get them talking about the inequity of the system, that is, and boy, do they (in general) have a lot to say about all the people who put nothing in and ride the system. However, their picture of America is such that we leave all the sick and the needy in the gutter and the moochers are the price a society pays for making sure that people don't die of starvation if they can't work. Even watching the movie "Nell" with friends was an enlightening experience, because they saw it that in the end, this poor woman was going to die in the wilderness because a) she *couldn't* be self-reliant and b) she would get no help from any social program since she lived in America.

41 Good *ow* evening. So everyone excited for tomorrow? I've been reading my own personal tea leaves, as it were, and can't figure out who is going to win. ON the one hand, have lost a total of 133 pounds. Point for Obama cause nothing that good can happen without something really shitty happening. On the other hand the abscess on my leg went apeshit a couple of weeks ago. Point for Romney. Nearly got creamed on the way home for work this morning. An evil portent. Point for Obama. But I've been with upset stomach all night and have an asshole like a Japanese flag. Suffering for the greater glory? Point for Romney. It's too close to call. I'm gonna need someone to come over and help me re-arrange furniture.

48 What's the matter with Europeans? Socialism is all they know, and our MFM is their only source. Was listening to an Australian reporter in Florida yesterday. Did you know that early voting and all was because in Republican areas they don't allow minorities to vote? True, she said. That's why they have to keep changing the rules so that people can keep voting.

Posted by: t-bird at November 05, 2012 07:13 PM (FcR7P)

49 I don't know if you have something similar in FL, but when I get into the lesser referendums and they're worded such that a 'no' vote ends up meaning 'yes', I count on the recommendations of a local talk radio host.  The radio website has his suggestions up.

Germans should understand fiscal conservatism since they're pissed, and I don't blame them, for underwriting the profligate habits of the rest of Europe.

As for their moral superiority, f- them.  In 1990, a friend and I were having a cigarette and Coke (I have since stopped smoking) outside in the far end of a virtually empty and large courtyard at Boston's Museum of Fine Art.

This German guy with a toddler had the entire yard from which to choose a seat and table at which to sit and relax with his young daughter.  Seriously, he could have sat a good 30 or so yards from us, but no, he came and sat at the table next to us, about three feet away, even though he saw we were smoking. BTW, in those days, ashtrays were actually on the tables.

He began waving his hand in front of him and making hurumphing sounds at me, getting angrier and angrier.  I was surprised when he spoke German rather than English as I thought most Germans could speak some English.  The angrier he got, the more I pointed to other tables.  He got red in the face and finally I told him to "Get the hell out if you don't like the smoke.  You have an entire courtyard."  He didn't move, sitting there with his daughter, inhaling all that second-hand smoke he so despised only to make a point.  The stereotype of the obstinate German is...like all stereotypes, mostly accurate.  I made sure I smoked that cig down to the butt and when I did, I lighted another. He finally left.

95 A one-time payout of $85K? I'm guessing this woman does not have outstanding earning potential, nor does she have outstanding judgement. She is likely to burn through that $85K quickly and then be hurting for money. I'm not joking when I say I picture her camping at protests rather than getting a job, and even eating McDonalds and Starbucks every day instead of food, she will burn through her lump sum. But maybe she can get a job in the MFM or something.

98 Now you might think that the one place you could go and not hear anything more about the election and polls would be a foreign country - but you'd be wrong. There's been fairly regular coverage all during the day here in Germany and in fact they actually covered an Obama rally in OH live. I'm not sure why anyone in Germany would be surprised that Barky's campaign isn't being covered as if it were a German election. After all, the biggest campaign rally of the 2008 "American" race was in Berlin, Germany ... for friggin Germans! The fact that Barky would have thought to have a campaign rally in a foreign nation, for foreigners ... the fact that the fuzzy foreigners in said nation would think to actually host an "American" campaign rally ... and the fact that America would let this all happen without throwing the miserable piece of horse shit into jail ... Well, that's what we call "retarded, yet true, history".

They need to have the government tell them what to do. They don't understand why so many here have a fuck off attitude towards the government. We have that attitude because our forefathers left their little country's serfdoms for freedom here. Your ancestors stayed there because they loved being serfs for the Lords.

"What's the matter with Europeans? Are they so mesmerized by Obama's

It's really simple human psychology.  Once the big bear of the Soviet Union was broken up, the Euros were able to finally tell us, in their subtle and cowardly way, that they are pissed that Americans have had to bail them out in two world wars.  I mean think of it--we're always the saviors and they the kid that needs assistce.  We rebuilt the place  after WW2.

When Bully Soviets seemed to collapsed, they breathed a sigh of relief and felt they mock us when we had problems elsewhere.  Here come Bammy apologizing all over the place and they could say, "See, those Americans are finally apologizing for being so damn good at things."

Only the Eastern Euro countries still mindful of the treacherous Soviets, people like the Poles, are grateful for American help and/or understanding.

Little weak bros are always, deep down, envious of their bigger, badder older bros.  Human nature.

Obama worships Europe, and sees them as an Ideal. I think that the Europeans are secretly or not so secretly pleased at our kow towing, bowing to the mayor of Tampa president, since it reassures then that they in fact are Superior to those heathen and obviously ignorant Americans.

/also on a European holiday, I had a couple for Ireland spellbound when I explained that cars got out of the way of ambulances, and that was the law. They were stunned that worked. So much for European brain power...

182 The screams and excuses and shrieks of rage and anguished howls of the liberals will be fun to listen to . . . for a while. What does worry me is whether they'll ever stop. Seems like the whole Democratic party these days is nothing but one huge grudge-nursing festival, and seeing their dime-store Messiah lose is going to completely unhinge them. I'm not talking about riots. That's all a lot of bullshit, except maybe in Detroit (like anyone would notice). No, I'm talking about the whining we're going to have to endure. You just know some liberal asshole will claim Romney "STOLE!" the election, or that the voting fuckups in NY and NJ somehow invalidate everything. And for four years we're going to have to listen to that crap. Still, I suppose that's better than watching Western Civilization slide into ruin, which is the alternative.

Don't get me going on psychometrics, but the Irish have a group IQ that is among the lowest in Europe, like Southern Euros such as southern Italians and Greeks.  Don't yell, don't yell. I read a bunch of evolutionary biology, population genetics, and see a lot of data about IQ.  My ancestry is half Southern Italian (Neopolitan),  Irish, and  Cherokee Indian.  Amerindians score very low on IQ as well. Thus, with this admixture, I have to keep reminding myself that these are group, not individual scores.

Seriously though, the Irish do love a good time, spend time drinking, and being very lazy, even if they are fun.  Yes, it's true, they have a genome that makes them very susceptible to alcoholism, as do Amerindians.  Indians haven't evolved to handle carbs because they were introduced to agriculture much later than Euros, who were introduced to it about 10k years ago.

The European ambulances are loaded up with medical staff that work on the patient on the way to the hospital. They travel slowly so that the staff doesn't get bounced around and nick an artery.

The US ambulances haul ass to the hospital with the EMTs trained to keep the patient alive until they get to the hospital where they have all of the equipment to do what is needed.

I guess if you look at numbers, our way is better. There was some discussion when Princess Diana was killed that if that accident had happened in the US, she would have lived because she would have gotten to the hospital much quicker.

228 Trust me, when the Fitzgerald went down, there wasn't much time for saying farewells to each other.

As I understand it, the hatch covers popped and with the waves as high as they were and coming broadside abeam, the Fitzgerald went fairly quickly.

An iron ore freighter when fully loaded has only about 6' of free board (amount of hull above the water), the holds are completely full of ore so there's little or no reserve buoyancy. 2-3 large waves and the holds are now full of ore and water and the free board just dropped to 3' or less and now more waves can wash right into the hold.

An ore boat (the Anderson) nearby said a freak wave passed them about the time the Fitzgerald went down. A freak wave is a confluence of wave patterns and wind that produces a wave larger than the previous waves. It can happen as often as 1 time out of 30 waves. sometimes the conditions are such that this pattern produces a wave 2-3 times the previous waves. Since the waves were running about 12-16 ft, a 45 foot wave would have reached the pilot house on the Fitzgerald.

In a word; bloop. Gone like a open tin can. No life rafts were launched.

The MC was a German woman in charge of the base civilian union and she went totally off script and went on for about 20 minutes - with tears in her eyes - to a room of 500 people who were there to recognize their civilians -  telling us how thankful she was Obama had won, and now the world would be saved, and how all the wars  and imperialism under Bush would be all over now!   Remind you, this  is a room of  400 senior US military leaders being preached to by a German about imperialism...

Lots of people of all ages. It was definitely not predominantly elderly people. And it says a lot that so many elderly people were willing to wait in line in the *freaking cold* (it was cold, I tell ya!) and then wait some more to see Mitt Romney, the next POTUS. 241 If I were a prayin' man, I'd certainly be asking the Lord to guide Americans to vote wisely tomorrow and give Romney a margin of victory far beyond the reach of Democratic shenanigans, legal challenges, or rationalizations. Do you realize they haven't admitted losing an election since 1988? To Democrats, 2000 and 2004 were "stolen" and should rightfully have been theirs. This isn't just blog-comments trash talk, either: in '08 I saw Obama-Biden signs with a little silhouette of Florida on them -- here in New England. The "dog whistle" to Dems was obvious. Maybe if we're lucky and they do lose big, the Democrats will actually stop and think for once. Think about whether their ideas are really sound, think about whether letting George Soros call the tune is wise for either the party or the nation. Maybe the media will realize how badly they've damaged their credibility. I'm not a prayin' man, though, so I'll take any victory we get.

254 Speaking of Carter, here we are with one of my favorite pages from the book Rendezvous with Destiny.

---------

About two hours after the old cranks of Dixville Notch voted, Jody Powell took a phone call on Air Force One as the big plane was on approach to the Seattle airport. It was from the White House. On the other end of the line were Hamilton Jordan and Pat Caddell. The connection was bad, but Powell could hear well enough to know the news was bad. "We need to talk to the president," his friend Jordan said. "The bottom has fallen out. It's all over."

As soon as the plane landed, Powell called back on a land line and pressed for more information. Caddell told him that on Saturday his polling had had the race statistically tied, with Carter at 41 and Reagan at 40 percent. On Sunday night, his polling had had Reagan going up by 5 percent over Carter. And by Monday night, Reagan had opened up 8 to 10 percent lead over the president.

The young press secretary, grasping at straws, asked whether the poll was an aberration. Caddell told him that a trend had begun over the weekend and was only accelerating. A landslide was coming their way and there was nothing they could do to get out of its path. Dejectedly, Powell hung up. He then watched as the president spoke to a hangar full of enthusiastic Democrats. Though Carter's voice was nearly gone, he gave a good performance, even as he choked up a bit. Powell remorsefully thought that it was the best rally of the year.

He decided not to tell the president yet; he would wait until they were alone on the Boeing 707 and headed back to Georgia. Problem was, he couldn't get Carter alone. Around 11:30 P.M. pacific time, as the plane took off, Powell went to the galley, fixed himself a stiff drink, and waited. Carter had come out of his two-room private compartment to chew the fat with the staff in their section of the plane and have a rare double martini. The president was "joshing around ... that sort of thing," Powell recalled. "I thought, "This is such a nice one that I cannot break into this and take him back up there and tell him he's got a call, because I know what he is going to hear."

Carter decided to invite reporters into his private quarters for a chat. Finally, as the plane was halfway across the country and the reporters had been dismissed, Powell went to the forward section of the plane and told Carter about his phone call with Jordan and Caddell. It was now almost 4 A.M.

"What did they find?" Carter asked.

"They said it looks bad," Powell told him. "It's probably all over."

Carter was first shocked and then disheartened. "So finally," Powell remembered, "one of the stewards came ... and said, 'Mr. Caddell and Mr. Jordan are on the phone and they said they need to talk to the preisdent.'" Caddell's latest numbers showed an utter and complete collapse for the Georgian, across the board, with nearly all groups and in nearly all regions., He was losing whites overwhelmingly, he was losing the Catholic vote, and Reagan was extremely competitive with union voters. Carter was being wiped out in the suburbs and in the rural areas. Reagan was scoring impressively with Hispanics and Jewish voters. Carter's beloved South had also apparently found a new hero in Reagan. Carter was running far behind in every category from four years earlier, even among the evangelicals he'd carried so handsomely in 1976.

"Are you sure about this?" Carter asked.

"Yes. There is just no way."

With little else to say, both men apologized to the president. Carter hung up. Powell, weeping, said, "I'm really sorry, Mr. President.... We could have done a better job." Carter called Rosalynn at their home in Plains and told her, "We are going to lose."

The president, alone in the darkened Air Force One, gently wept.

But they are not really sorry about America's troubles. They are relieved.

283 20 If you're goin to go generic, just go ahead and invest in tobacco and cigarette tubes. I've been doing that for nearly 20 years. Although, ironically, I have a Premiere Supermatic machine and now I'm using Top tobacco. I used to smoke Camel Filters, then switched to American Spirit and started making my own. But they discontinued their canned tobacco, so I switched to Top. I tried several brands, and that seemed the closest. But I think it costs a lot more than $1.30 per pack nowadays. I haven't totaled it up recently, but $1.30 was true several years ago before the government raised taxes on bulk tobacco. Still, it remains much cheaper than store-bought.

The big thing that worries me tomorrow is a proposal in Michigan. The governor of Michigan and the Prime Minister of Canada have already signed an agreement to begin construction of a new bridge between Michigan and Ontario, currently the busiest international crossing in the world. Canda has already signed off paying for the ENTIRE project. We'll keep tolls until the bridge is paid off. This will cost Michigan NOTHING!

The owner of the bridge, Matty Moroun, had spent upwards of $30 million dollars, to put a proposal on the ballot that would force a vote for any new bridge construction.

If for some INSANE reason, this proposal passes ( and ironically enough - the billionaire wins!!) - there are no words....

336 Since several people seemed to like the earlier Starship Troopers reference, have another that I find highly relevant:

""Value" has no meaning other than in relationship to living beings. The value of a thing is always relative to a particular person, is completely personal and different in quantity for each living human—"market value" is a fiction, merely a rough guess at the average of personal values, all of which must be quantitatively different or trade would be impossible. [...] This very personal relationship, "value", has two factors for a human being: first, what he can do with a thing, its use to him… and second, what he must do to get it, its cost to him. There is an old song which asserts that "the best things in life are free". Not true! Utterly false! This was the tragic fallacy which brought on the decadence and collapse of the democracies of the twentieth century; those noble experiments failed because the people had been led to believe that they could simply vote for whatever they wanted… and get it, without toil, without sweat, without tears."

Also, my cousin got a fun new word from a captcha that we're trying to figure out good uses for: fucceeded

But for now, I depart for crashing.  Thanks to the Obamaconomy, I've been funemployed and living at my parents' place since graduating 2 years ago.  Apparently we're getting up early enough to vote at 6:30 AM.

Husband and I have already plumped for the ostrich way. After voting he drops me off to work and goes straight to the cinema. Movies, movies, movies until he needs to pick me up from work -- otherwise he WILL not be able to resist checking in electronically. At work I pump up my IPod loud enough to drown my jitters. I'm used to reining in Internet urges at work 'cause we practically have to sign a blood pact not to use the web for non-business use.

He'll do the briefest of possible checks before picking me up to determine the next move. If still see-saw --

346 As bad as Obama has been, it has not been hell, only purgatory.  We have had four years of progressively more destructive policies, more and more debt piled on our shoulders, ever-greater fecklessness on the international stage, a barbarian horde of regulations waiting at the border to sack and pillage the economy.

The question is whether the voters are prepared to recognize and deal with the threat.

Hell comes when a plurality of the voters decide that the long-term health of the nation no longer matters, that it's perfectly fine to kill it as long as they can gnaw enough off the carcass to keep them comfortable for a while.

379 Ugh, the Dixville Notch results has me annoyed, since I, and conventional wisdom indicated it would be a Romney victory in the Notch. A) He has a home there, and in a more broad sense, is a New Englander. B) DN trends right. Both of the other votes- Congress and Governor- were clear Republican majorities. So, does that mean a Republican swung to Obama and Obama got all the DN indies? I know it is a small town, and probably meaningless in the grand scheme of things. But a decisive victory in DN would have been a nice signal to the country that people are sick of Obama. These results indicate that people, unbelievably, are willing to give the guy a second chance. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE VOTING FOR OBAMA???

Two signs in my neighborhood for no on Prop 32, one up the street from me.  That guy also has an Obama-Biden yard sign while the other guy hasn't one as he did 4 years ago.

I have a Romney sign in the yard, one of only two signs on my street.  Even 4 years ago, there were few bumper stickers for either side.  It was never in question that Obama would win and this year, even though CA will go Dem, I think the reason I am not seeing bumper stickers outside my town is because they are hard to get as Obama hasn't had to advertise and there are no campaign hqs around here.

I've spent time I could have used for work, family, and friends. But I'd do it all over again if I was given the choice. Defeating the SCoaMF is THAT important. I'm out early for the night. I plan on getting up early to vote, going to a probably unpleasant meeting, and then get ready for all the election data to come in. As I type this, I am remined of the words spoken by a legal immigrant from the old Communist bloc back in 2010. She said: "How could you let this happen here? This is socialism; this is communism. I know; I lived under it for forty years! We were invaded and had it imposed on us; we didn’t have a choice – you do. Why are you letting this happen?" I for one, will not just sit back and let it happen. Worst comes to worst, let us remember the words of Virgil: "Do not yield to evil, Attack, attack, more boldly even than fortune seems to permit" Until tomorrow fellow 'rons and 'ettes...

God, let it be so!

388 Slow night here . . . Mrs. Strangepork told me I ought to remember to turn in early, because "you'll probably be up past midnight tomorrow night, watching the returns."  She's probably right.

389 Remember when Germans were with the *West* in the Cold War? Good times, good times. Pretty much Europe is a socialist cesspit skating on the last crumbs of gold stolen from the third world and looking down on everyone else for it. I feel sorry for *people in Europe* for what follows, but as for Europe, good riddance.

390 Dead thread is dead?

Guess all the action went to Ace's thread above.

But I don't want to gloat.  I was ready to declare Obamacare overturned and that turned out badly.  Put another way, it's not over until the fat lady sings.

Tuesday's poll is the only poll that matters.

Make sure to do your utmost, 'Rons!

391 As far as I understand things, Presidents can only issue pardons for specific crimes where there has at least been an indictment -- they can't pardon people for anything and everything.

So it'd be especially fun if Obama loses....and Issa announces that he has a bunch of planned indictments to be rolled out on Monday, January 21, 2013.

Calimari?

Nah, roasted as in a celebrity roast -- except I was the celebrity. The BH is in Toastmasters, a club which meets regularly to do speeches to each other so as to become more accomplished speakers.

What's this about an abscess, and what did you eat?

Posted by: cthulhu at November 05, 2012 10:29 PM (kaalw)

400 Well tonight I had some sliced ham which was most yum with some leftover veggies. That was good eatin'! The abscess isn't the problem per se. Just shit piling on is all. But listen to me whine, it's boring. I do say, you and your Better Half sure are in some interesting clubs!

401 If you do have an abscess, do you know about ichthammol?

Toastmasters is pretty universal -- there might be one near you. http://www.toastmasters.org/

402 Icthammol?  Never heard of it.

Hhmmmmm.....

404 For boils, carbuncles, and other such things, the stuff is da bomb. A couple of caveats, however: First, I've had it leave a dark stain where a boil used to be. Second, it is messy. And, third, you sometimes get some funny looks.

And, as part of the reason for the third item -- if you can't find it at a pharmacy, try something like http://tinyurl.com/bx64m2w .

And, for another take, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonium_bituminosulfonate

Hmmm, mine was the "better than thou" Callie transplant who had a whole bank of machines, in a CASINO, to choose from, at 3 am, when it was dead, and plopped down right next to me.

I had a lit ciggie, an ashtrya, and my pack of smokes in front of me - no way she missed them.

Well, I moved my ashtray to my left, since she was on my right, and she still made the coff coff sounds and waved around her face. Then she did something really odd - she took out a spray bottle and spritzd herself. At 1st, I thought water, then the stench hit me - perfume! My eyes started watering and my sinuses slammed shut - smoke, no problem, perfume? Allergay attack - go figure.

Anyway, I igged it. Next spritz? Hit me on the side of my face, this I did NIT ig! I went OFF on the witch. How DARE she spray me, never ONCE asking me to not smoke, just gah I despise those goody two shoe types!!!

411 They love him over here in China too (where I am working). If you were the "evil commie horde" who would you rather fight? Obama or Romney? Enough said. As for the EU, Hey sure, I always take my presidential voting tips from the nation who spawned Hitler, or France (who left alot of good guns on the battlefield in WWII, never been fired and only dropped once); or Greece..Sheesh!

412 Cross-posted: This comment really may have value for someone's life and if you're inclined to check it out, I think you'll be glad you did, if only for your entertainment and knowledge. But first ... >>> That's exactly right. All in all, I'd rather be the sadder but wiser voter. I don't think sad politically is what you want to be in advance of a big vote, but I think letting smoke be blown up your ass is a bad idea. Even if you were wrong, it never hurts to think of the election as close and turnout as critical. Now on to the somewhat related part I think someone here might enjoy or benefit from. I was thinking about all of the debates I've seen over the years, and the first ones I can remember watching live were during the '96 election. Remembering the Vice Presidential debate that year, I thought Admiral James Stockdale was senile when he made his, "Who am I? Why am I here?" comments. That's certainly how the media portrayed it. However, a few years ago, I realized he wrote these philosophical papers http://goo.gl/Rr146 AFTER that debate. His mind was very sharp. During the debate, Stockdale had issues with his hearing aid and somehow compensated by trying to make a philosophical rhetorical flourish. But that's not even the key point of my comment. I'd really like you to download and read those papers by the heroic Stockdale themselves, available on the US Naval Academy's website. You'll find them on that page above under the heading "Admiral James B. Stockdale". They are entitled "The Stoic Warrior's Triad" and "Master of My Fate". Stockdale, as you may know, was the highest ranking officer to be a Vietnam POW. When asked in an interview who didn't survive being a Vietnam POW, he said it was the most optimistic prisoners: "They were the ones who said, 'We're going to be out by Christmas.' And Christmas would come, and Christmas would go. Then they'd say, 'WeÂ’re going to be out by Easter.' And Easter would come, and Easter would go. And then Thanksgiving, and then it would be Christmas again. And they died of a broken heart." Stockdale DID believe in a kind of "Disciplined Optimism", which was a chapter title in one of his books. This is sometimes called "The Stockdale Paradox" in philosophy and goes like this: --- You must retain faith that you will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties. AND at the same time ... You must confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be. --- Anyway, that's food for thought. I know flat-out optimism is very popular in American culture, but Stockdale drew heavily from Greek philosophy, especially Stoicism and especially from Epictetus. Stoic ideas are more popular in American war colleges than in society writ large because of the enormous and very real dangers and hardships warriors face. As many of you veterans and family members of veterans know all too well. I'm just going to try to gently suggest that those who aren't as optimistic as you are, who may even seem downright brutal in their analysis of the present situation, are not necessarily an enemy trying to dispirit you. They may be your ally with a different philosophical approach to problems.

413 Correction: The first debates I remember were from the '92 election, which of course included the Perot-Stockdale ticket.

414 Go on, Germany. Hide your face in shame. Remember how the sort of people who would vote for a man like Mitt beat you in two world wars and then turned around, kept watch and kept half of you free in the face of something worse for fifty years thereafter.
