Overnight Open Thread (11-7-2012)–Comfortably Numb Edition
— Maetenloch

Well I'm pretty drained and don't feel like talking about politics.

I've been up since 3:30AM, saw Romney lose by 8am, and then had a long busy day. There were a few pangs of sadness (about how you feel a few weeks after a breakup) during the day but on the plus side I saw a lot of people I haven't seen in a while, got some sales leads, was buzzed no less than 3 separate times today on free beer and wine, and got to chat up some cute young Scandi chicks (sub-clade: Finnish).

So all in all not too bad in the micro and macro-micro as post-debacle days go. So that's gonna be my focus for a while: smelling  the coffee, drinking the beer, and enjoying the micro-pleasures of life.

Now I like discussing and writing about politics - but it's not my life. So some political events may piss me off or frustrate me but by and large my daily mood and enjoyment of life aren't driven by whatever happens to be going on in politics. Now some will say this is only because I don't love America or experience emotions as you humans know them - but that hasn't been the case since at least the MkIV Emotion co-processor.

But having struggled with depression a time or three I've learned that the best way to keep the black dog away is to always have multiple irons in the fire of contentment. So if one turns to shit, there are always others ready to give you a little satisfaction on a daily and weekly basis. And these need their occasional share of attention too.

Of course don't forget about the future - I always keep my Virtual Niedermeyer running in the background, scheming and plotting during otherwise idle brain cycles.

An Oral History of Cheers

On September 30, 1982, NBC premiered a new sitcom called Cheers, a smartly written show about a bar owned by a retired relief pitcher named Sam Malone. Created by director James Burrows and writer-producers Glen and Les Charles, Cheers would become the last blast of pre-irony prime-time. There was no callous snark, no deconstructive riffs, and only a handful of time-stamped pop-culture references. For the most part, people sat around a bar and talked. But despite its elemental simplicity, the show sparked a quiet revolution in the way TV comedy was produced, with each half-hour episode playing into a soap-style arc of love, death, and bar-bets that would go on for eleven seasons. "It was something bigger than a sitcom," says early Cheers writer-producer Sam Simon, who'd later help develop The Simpsons. "It was a sweeping narrative."

Why You Never Want to Belong to a Church or Synagogue in Germany

Because if you are a member, the German government automatically takes a tithe out of your paycheck:

Ever since 1803, all Germans citizens registered with the government as Catholics, Protestants, or Jews have paid a "church tax." 8-9% of the individual's income tax bill goes to the government, which holds on to the money for a little while before passing it on to the church of which he is a member. To us Americans, it may seem an odd way of operating, but it has been the system in Germany for over two centuries.

And if you don't pay up, you get 'excommunication lite'. 9% is a pretty big hit so it's amazing that church membership is as high as it is.

Sandra Tsing Loh: The Problem Is That No Man Is Good Enough For Me And My Friends

But once you read the article it's not a surprise that all but one of the women are divorced and single and the only married friend apparently hates her husband over a light bulb:

And the FOURTH NIGHT???" Annette's face stretches into such a terrifying Medusa rictus that we recoil. "I wrench open the kitchen door and start screaming: 'Oh my GOD, Ron! Either do it or don't do it, but if you honestly and in fact have no plans at all to change the lightbulb, JU-U-UST TE-E-ELL ME!' And Ron is actually indignant! It's like I am the one who is being OUTRAGEOUS and require HIM to give ME a teachable moment. He's saying: 'Look at yourself-why are you so fixated on a lightbulb? That's pretty shallow. We're happy, we're healthy-but all you see is the lightbulb. Are you aware of how negative you've become? It's the first thing you radiate when you step in through the door.' And it's like I can't breathe-I literally can't breathe-and I'm saying: 'It's not about a lightbulb, it's that you PROMISED, over and over again, and I TRUSTED you-which means your word means NOTHING!' At which point he says-and he is literally waving the spatula now, like a king with his scepter-'If you are so obsessed with the damn lightbulb-and I'm sorry if I don't invest my whole EMOTIONAL LIFE in it like you do, and maybe you should look at that-WITH GOD AS MY WITNESS, I PROMISE FROM THIS DAY FORWARD YOU WILL NEVER SEE A BURNED-OUT LIGHTBULB IN THIS HOUSE AGAIN!!!' "

I'm guessing the burnt-out lightbulb is just one of many broken things in this relationship.

Wife freaked out recently when her son phoned to tell her he might be shipping out the next day because some other recruits paperwork got messed up and a spot opened up. We were in Vegas at the time, on our way home and would completely miss him. She cried and cried, but luckily they fixed the other guys papers and he is still set for next March.

18 10-Not all women voted for Obama. Some of us think with our brains instead of our nether regions. It's just that there appear to be far too many women out there with "daddy" issues, and think that the government is a perfectly good substitute. I hate women's lib for doing this to women, instead of encouraging them to really think.

It's been a rough couple of days.   I was up for 27 hours straight - worked as an election judge, came home with a screaming headache, heard the bad news and didn't get to sleep at all last night.  Spent much of today either numb or crying, and wishing that Tristan da Cunha  would allow immigration.

Wait until the trans-gender movement takes over public schools and starts performing sex change operations without consent on hormonally confused and easily exploited teenagers. Don't believe this could happen? Look only to the UK and Barry's safe school Tzar. Children are our future. Their culture is crap, the schools are crap, and we aren't having enough children to begin with. So we are all boned. Hell everyone under 30 is turning into a perpetual fucking toddler with their shiny iGagets, the government acting like parents, and hipster fashion dressing adults like they were still in preschool.

Yeah, "let them own it"?  Hells bells, now they own us.  With scotus openings coming up we are well & truly screwed unless we change the game a lot.  Lets crash the beotch and fight to see whose vision gets to rebuild it.  I used to fear the chaos & think those who claimed it were Walter Mittys, but now I think it may be the only option.  Srsly, I disbelieve the sincerity of anyone who still thinks this thing can be fixed.  (Gratuitous Leonard Cohen quote:  "They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom, for trying to take the system from within.  I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them . . ."

As a bona fide conspiracist, I still find it hard to believe that the dems could "manufacture" a win on election day.  During recounts, most assuredly extra D ballots would appear, but to do it so efficiently as to win within one day?

But, practice makes perfect and Soros dollars fed to some uber-liberal programmers might just do the trick.  FWIW, I have worked with some programmers that I am sure could make a voting machine do anything the "design specs" called for.

224 So is there really no way to beat this machine now? How do I ever reach out to people and explain conservatism if 99% of people my age know since kindergarten that I'm racist, hate women, want to go to war with everyone, rape women then force them to have my babies, all before I even say a word to them?? My thoughts exactly. I do think once all the old hippies die off, things might shift a bit, but that could take decades.

225 @223 thx. I not only used the wrong word, but I spelt it wrong. Right, withholding allowances. And by "max out", I mean within reason for your personal tax situation. You can actually run afoul of the IRS if you claim too many exemptions, so you have to do the maths in advance.

232 Oh meo, oh myo, screw you Ohio....and Florida. Virginia while you're at it. It kills me when I see people saying maybe it is time to "rethink" or "go soft" on abortion and illegal immigration. Neither of those were even really talking points in this election. This wasn't 2004. Further, softer? Softer?! Than Mitt Romney? The guy barely mentioned abortion. Other than to pick a Catholic running mate. And, defend from all the vile Sandra Fluke/War on Women/Vote with your lady parts nonsense. And, to defend the religious liberties that Obamacare will take a dump on. But, he wasn't nutty or ideological about it. Illegal immigration is equally mystifying. It was hardly brought up at all, with exception to Romney calling Obama out on it a little in the debates. My response to this: there are already too many illegals here that we have to foot the bills for. And, there aren't even enough jobs for the legal Americans in this country. How are we supposed to be able to absorb MORE into this country? Maybe if there were fewer of them here to begin with, there would be enough jobs for actual Americans? Abortion and illegal immigration are not the answer. I wish I knew what was, though.

250 I've been doing some writing, trying to get out every thing that i was thinking of after the disaster that was yesterday. I'm writing a series of posts, as Sun-Tzu might say, on understanding both us and the left; additionally, thoughts on where we must go from here, and such. But first: Aftermath - The Election Postmortom: When I was making predictions as to I mentioned that I felt being a bit of a “Pollyanna.” And was I ever! At least I have the solace that I was not alone. Most on the right were predicting a Romney victory and gains in the Senate. This failure was that we were looking at 2010 as the model, while what we got was 2008 as a model. The pollsters were right; those who complained about “skewed polls” were wrong. The problem, was that the Republicans were believing their own hype. Even Romney hadnÂ’t allegedly prepared a concession speech. The entire right built up their fictional success until it became one huge sounding chamber. What happened to the Republicans in 2012 is exactly what happened to the Democrats in 2004. The only question is: Will the Republicans rebound like the Democrats did in 2006 and 2008? The Republican loss can not be attributed to any particular group in the GOPÂ’s coalition. However, special mention can be noted of Akin in Missouri, and Mourdock in Indiana. There is a simple lesson that can be learned there: NEVER say anything in regards to, or connected with, RAPE as being even slightly positive. The Republicans have a lot to do, though many are wondering if weÂ’ve gone past the point of no return: “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the worldÂ’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.” ― Alexis de Tocqueville As for Nevada, I generally called it right. Being a bit more plugged in with what is going on here, and seeing/hearing things with my own senses, I avoided being a Pollyanna and was a bit more accurate. Obama did indeed win, though his margin was much larger (6½%) due to taking Washoe county. Yet again, Washoe has turned out to be a bellwether for Nevada. Obama won by about 66K votes, the majority of which is probably due to the 230% increase in voter registration the Democrats had built up between the June primary and the election. I was much more accurate in the Senate race, where Heller defeated Auton-American Shelley Berkley by a bit over 1%. He did this by racking up a huge margin in the rural counties, winning Washoe decisively, and keeping the BerkleyÂ’s numbers in Clark county to under 50%. THAT is how Republicans win Nevada. HellerÂ’s victory makes Nevada the ONLY state that elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate despite Obama winning the state. It should also be of note that the Independent American Party candidate and the “None of the Above” option garnered over 9% of the vote. Also contributing to HellerÂ’s victory is 16K voters who voted for Obama, but didnÂ’t vote in the Senate race. I also called the Congressional races, though HorsfordÂ’s lead in NV04 was a bit more than I expected. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=506

Yeah, plus it's worse than that. It's a regular production line. Every fucking year another wave rolls out of the factory and become voters. In 2012, there were at least 3 new batches of indoctrinated bolshies, hipsters and greenies unleashed to vote since 2008. It's insidious. The old people who may not be right/con, but are at least inclined to be so through life experience, are leaving the scene. Every year.

Factor in the MSM and commie cultural war, then those young progtards have far narrower odds of making the transition from young bombthrower, to older wiseguy. Prior to the fullly fledged soviet media, there was at least replacements for the departed old in sufficient numbers to balance things out, somewhat.

That's about 10 years away. They floated it a few years ago, and usually it takes about 20 years from floating the idea to implementing it. With the Dems needing to feed the pig, it probably will now drop to 12 years.

The new tax to watch for is the "imputed" income tax. This will be a way to pay off the singles who voted for the Dems. Since singles usually rent their living space, they have to keep paying market price for their housing, while those who own their homes pay a mortgage which is based on the market price of the home when they bought it. Joe Homeowner bought his house 10 years ago and pays $700 a month for his mortgage. Julia Apartmentdweller lives in an apartment and pays $1200 a month in rent. The IRS has decided that the "median fair market rent" in this town is $1200 a month. Because Joe Homeowner is paying $500 a month less than that, the IRS says this is income, and now Joe Homeowner now has an extra $6000 a year to declare as income.

This would be a nice FU to married people and a nice BJ for the singles.

Either that or we get a VAT.

Posted by: KG at November 07, 2012 11:03 PM (IPz9m) There's a lot of custom stuff on the market, or special grade stuff that goes up high, especially 1911s. Some HKs are that expensive from the factory. Your typical Beretta 92 or Cougar or Glock or Sig is $500-700. A few guns can be below $500, like Rugers, but not usually much lower. Rock River Arms makes cheap 1911s, but they have cast frames. That's fine with normal ammo, but you can't convert them to Super Duper High Power stuff like the .460 Rowland. Prices are not that much different in CA, but some stores are just very expensive. Shop around.

304 There is a simple lesson that can be learned there: NEVER say anything in regards to, or connected with, RAPE as being even slightly positive. Posted by: The Political Hat at November 07, 2012 10:52 PM (sZTYJ) I am gonna have no fucking hair in a minute here. Nobody said anything positive about rape. SOme people said some dumb shit but the pro-rape thing was all a propaganda invention which people on both sides bought instantly and has now joined "selected not elected" and "No WMDs were found" in the Bullshit Official History book. If *everyone* just buys the official line instantly, no one unpopular may ever speak AT ALL EVER. Go ahead and criticize them for WHAT THEY SAID, not some hysterical invented version. Goddamnit people are so fucking stupid. Posted by: Ben Ghazi at November 07, 2012 11:02 PM (bxiXv) The problem is that people hear what the Dem media feeds them. When Mourdock was talking about rape, he finished up by saying that maybe a pregnancy resulting from it was God's will. Trying to talk about anything so vile and evil as rape as somehow involving "God's will" is STUPID... no matter how out of context it was our distant it was related to the rape itself. Just DON'T say ANYTHING positive when talking about RAPE. We lost two seats that ought to have been ours easy because of this.

I told MrsCaniac that they wouldn't have shown that before tonight. I think there actually might be some Obama jokes that will work their way into TV and movies now. Now that their messiah has been re-elected.

Posted by: Hrothgar wants the ampersands freed! at November 07, 2012 11:59 PM (Cnqmv)

That investigation is dead. It won't hurt Obama anymore so it won't be pursued.

We've also heard the last about Fast and Furious. It will be dropped.

After the tax 'battle', if it is even that, will come the amnesty 'battle.' If the Republicans sell us out, or JEF uses an EO to grant 30 million people citizenship, that is our Fort Sumter. That is the hill to die on, because there are no other hills left. It would ensure no conservative will ever be elected again. Texas and possibly Oklahoma and South Carolina would be threatened to turn blue.

It's a loser for us either way. As someone said earlier, the Reagan amnesty didn't generate a solid bloc of lifelong, conservative, Republican-voting Spanish speakers.

374 Forgive me but living in a solid red state I don't have much exposure to presidential campaigns like those back east. So I still don't understand how we lost?? I really want to know who were these worthless republicans who stayed home? How could you not see the importance of this election and unseating 0 as the only chance at salvaging a United States? For the other side I can only imagine every dirty trick in the book. People on facebook bragged about sending in multiple absentee and provisional ballots in addition to voting, I also imagine old school herding minorities like goats onto buses driving them from precinct to precinct to vote as much as possible, bribing anyone with food, beer, money, whatever.

Anyway this has been a lot of helpful venting, so this is my first and last day posing at AoS. it's been real.

375 I think Modern Family is pretty accurate portrayal of families in the L.A. suburbs. Old patriarch of the family divorced with a crazy sort of hippie ex wife and has a hot young wife, he is self made in a construction firm. One son is gay and an environmental lawyer, the Dad doesn't consider him a real lawyer. His daughter married to a real estate agent who doesn't have a lot of "manly skills".

I have to watch each episode twice because I always miss something, and I really enjoy the non-pc humor to it, but the whole "Cam and Mitchell need to kiss" push by some fans made me shake my head. Those people just saw a gay couple that didn't kiss and that was bad, so they must kiss. Fans of the show saw Mitchell as someone with such a stick up his ass (no pun intended) and would never engage in PDA. Hell, Claire never engages in PDA with Phil.

As a Realtor, I always love the ads that Phil puts up. The one on the car was hilarious.

About the tax thing.

My info came about alll unplanned. It was a case of my children eating, or more taxes being withheld.

Yes, you can put yourself in a position where you only pay what is due w/o sending extra.

From what I know, 2 things.  You Must be in a position to pay it off ( plus interest, penalties, etc.)  when it's due, or you must coordinate w/ US to pay in installments.

I'm now in a  position, where I have to negotiate payments, but Oyear-1,  I  actually had a job where I could pay it all off at one time.

You can also pay quarterly. I know some people that do this, but I can't yet do this myself.

398

All that I have done was done w/o intention of keeping any money away from US.

My opinion, the tax forms are set up so if you tell the truth, you lost.

Also, all the agents I've talked to were extremely helpful and receptive.

I have attitudal probs w/ system, but no probs w/ people I've worked with, or who ahve worked w/ me.

You must be in position to project income at time taxes are due.

I cannot do that now.

401 Well, that was exciting. Very hard to believe our low vote count given our coalescence around Romney and rampant disfavor of Obama. The Latino vote stat was the most alarming. Thinking it through, though, we shouldn't be surprised; Latinos were traditionally Republican because they were hard-working Catholics with family-centered lives. Many still are, but a great many more (most apparently) have gotten on board the permanent handout train that goes with the baby-mama gangsta mentality we generally associate with the race whose mere mention makes you a racist. Same with the young'ens, who actually increased their representation from 18-19%. Long story short, Free shit >> Freedom. Sad. Oh well, life has a funny way of coming full circle, and hence it shall be for this crowd as well. As they grow older and continue to have nothing and no ability to change that condition because of the debt they piled on in order to get paid short-term, I plan to float around in the pool sippin' a 'rita, typing on my then-virtual laptop downloading all my "free" old man benefits. Like Grandpa Simpson once said, I don't want 'em, and I don't need 'em, but I'll scream like hell if I don't get 'em. Oh, and I'll laugh like a motherfucker.

Audible will give you your first audio book for free if you haven't had an account with them in the past, and you can cancel after downloading the book. Posted by: Samwise Gamgee the 3rd at November 08, 2012 03:54 AM (SKX2R)

414 Ace, you said this: Sam, I don't know you, but personally, I think it's a godawful idea to commit suicide. Unless you are already looking at a painful incurable disease with a sure end, it's crazy. Whether you believe in god or not, the universe around you is awesome and you commit a horrible mistake by not seeing as much of it and experiencing as much of it as you can. If you don't believe in god, which I assume you don't (otherwise you wouldn't be talking about suicide as merely an ethical question), then at death you will simply cease to exist. You will experience nothing more. In the entire eternity of the universe, you have already missed out almost all of it. You didn't exist for 14 billion years. You will not exist for the trillion years to come after. This is it. These precious few years which clever proteins have managed to gift you. This is all, then comes the Nothingness. Forever. This is it. I am not a doctor but your emotional level is almost certainly pitched too low. Your brain chemistry runs to the deeply depressed. It is sad that depression not only saps a life of color and joy but also precludes the person suffering it from seeking the simple cure for it. Depression can be cured. Before you go committing suicide, why don't you at least see if a simple biochemical adjustment will help you?
