We've analyzed Scarborough Research data, which includes 200,000 interviews with American adults, to determine the politics of beer drinkers. As the bubble chart shows, Dos Equis is a bipartisan brew - Republicans and Democrats both like to drink it. So Mr. Goldsmith's [the Most Interesting Man actor] public foray into the 2012 race could alienate a large share of Dos Equis fans. Ironically, this is in contrast to its corporate sister Heineken, which as it turns out is the most Democratic beer of all. On the other hand, Republicans love their Coors Light and favor Sam Adams, which is brewed just a few miles away from Romney campaign headquarters and whose namesake was an original tea partier.
Unfortunately there's no word on where the only Hopper-approved (PBUH) beer falls on the political spectrum.
Eh - there may be correlations between certain brands and politics but I'm just going to drink what I like and not drink what I don't. Life is too short to drink swill just because of politics.
Almost 10% too many.
The U.S. Marine Corps is having a hard time reducing its strength from 202,000 to 182,000. At first recruiting efforts were cut, reenlistment bonuses were eliminated and standards for reenlisting were increased. This did not get the job done. With a recession on too many first term marines wanted to stay in and too many well qualified, but unemployed, people wanted to get in....The marines are also offering early retirement to officers with less than 20 years. Again, this gets rid of people the marines would sorely need if there were another war. But now the battle the marines must win is getting strength down by 20,000.
This order to shed good people was pretty sudden. Last year, just as the marines were completing their expansion (ordered by Congress) from 180,000 to 202,000, they were told that the expansion must be reversed.
Sadly this yo-yoing is nothing new:
After World War II, the marines were ordered to cut strength from 475,000 to 75,000 and do it by 1950. Just as the marines finished those cuts, the Korean War broke out and the Cold War got a lot warmer. By 1955, strength was back up to 200,000. Then it dipped but shortly went up during Vietnam in the 1960s. Then it came down a bit in the 1970s and managed to keep it at around 180,000-200,000 until the present.
I'm guessing those 20,000 men will be sorely missed in a few years.
Six years ago, Mexico was the world's ninth largest exporter of cars. Today the country is ranked fourth-behind Germany, Japan and South Korea-with exports expected to total more than 2.14 million vehicles this year.
One in 10 cars sold last year in the U.S. was made in Mexico. Next year, every new taxi in New York's fleet-made by Nissan Motor Co. -will carry the "Hecho en Mexico" label. Mexico is now exporting vehicles to China, and even helped Japan keep up with orders after last year's tsunami.
Mexico's Economy Minister Bruno Ferrari boasted that a batch of new factories planned by car makers will help Mexico surpass South Korea in a few years.
Though China is geographically larger than the United States, it has far less arable land per capita available: 0.08 hectares per person versus 0.53 per person here. And the arable land available in China is shrinking, mostly because of extreme desertification.
So China imports food to help feed its huge and growing population. But its imports vastly outweigh its exports in agricultural products (see the chart below, courtesy Zero Hedge & FAO). And that deficit is going to grow: There will be lots more mouths to feed in the future, and as more and more Chinese enter the middle class, appetites evolve.
Good times to come.
A recent cob discussion over the Dutch proposed 'scum villages' reminded me of this article from a few years ago. It turns out that the US has been experimenting with the opposite of scumvilles - spreading the poor and dysfunctional around the city via section 8 housing. The hope was that the better environment would lift up the section 8ers. In practice it just spread crime around but now with multiple nuclei for murder and mayhem.
About six months ago, they decided to put a hunch to the test. Janikowski merged his computer map of crime patterns with Betts's map of Section8 rentals. Where Janikowski saw a bunny rabbit, Betts saw a sideways horseshoe ("He has a better imagination," she said). Otherwise, the match was near-perfect. On the merged map, dense violent-crime areas are shaded dark blue, and Section8 addresses are represented by little red dots. All of the dark-blue areas are covered in little red dots, like bursts of gunfire. The rest of the city has almost no dots.
Betts remembers her discomfort as she looked at the map. The couple had been musing about the connection for months, but they were amazed-and deflated-to see how perfectly the two data sets fit together. She knew right away that this would be a "hard thing to say or write." Nobody in the antipoverty community and nobody in city leadership was going to welcome the news that the noble experiment that they'd been engaged in for the past decade had been bringing the city down, in ways they'd never expected.
Last time we heard of Jack Stuef he was mocking Trig Palin while working as an editor at Wonkette. Well that got him fired and he's now fallen into the great catch basin of snarky assholes, Buzzfeed, where he's maintaining his usual levels of decorum and professionalism.
This time he wrote a article on Matt Inman, the cartoonist behind the Oatmeal, that was so utterly un-fact-checked as to approach libel. This led Inman to do a full-scale no-mercy Fisking of Stuef's article. The fact that Jack Stuef still gets a check for journalism should give hope to all the nasty un-professional wannabe writers of the world.

Aristolochia has been widely used in herbal medicine, but it contains aristolochic acid-a powerful kidney toxin and a carcinogen. As a result of including Aristolochia in the regimen (for a period of two years), 105 women attending the clinic developed rapidly progressing kidney failure and had to go on dialysis or have kidney transplants. Many of the women went on to develop cancer of the upper urinary tract. Cases of kidney failure due to the ingestion of herbal products containing aristolochic acid have also been reported in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
...People failed to recognize the nephrotoxic effects of Aristolochia in spite of its use in many cultures worldwide over thousands of years. In an interview, Grollman explained why: "The reason, of course, is quite simple. It's painless, and the damage happens much later, so you don't put together the fact that you took this medicine and four years later, you have kidney failure. It's been part of Ayurvedic, European, Chinese, and South American medicine for centuries. All of the great civilizations have used it. And not one reported its toxicity until the Belgians did 20 years ago. There are certain things that tradition can't tell you."
5 Things You Didn't Know About Dave Brubeck
Among them the fact that he graduated with a music degree even though he couldn't read music.
Brubeck's other teachers protested that he was a very gifted musician even if he couldn't read music, so the dean cut a deal with the jazz man: Brubeck could graduate, but only if he promised never to teach music and embarrass the school by revealing his shortcoming. Brubeck later laughingly told the website JazzWax, "I kept that promise ever since, even when I was starving."
He did learn to read music later in life.

The "code of conduct" of the air was not as commonplace as the article suggests. Plenty of pilots on both sides were machine gunned in their parachutes after they bailed out, and gun camera footage shows that pilots routinely kept firing at aircraft even as they were going down.
I never understood the need for historical revisionism. It was total war at that time. A pilot who survived would come back the next day to kill you or your compatriots.
The article talks about the "chivalry" of World War I pilots. That's more bunk. Read about AEF pilot Captain Douglas Campbell, who shot down a German observation plane after the gunner ran out of ammunition. Campbell wrote later that the now-helpless German observer tore up his maps and then stood in his cockpit with his arms folded until Campbell shot down the plane.
"He took his medicine like a man" Campbell said.
Most of the Red Baron's 80 victories were over observation planes that he shot from below. They were defenseless against him. Edward "Mick" Mannock of the RFC loved it when his victims went down in flames.
"Got another flamer today," he'd tell his squadron mates. "Sizzle sizzle, all the way down!"
The truth should always be told, even if it's unpleasant.

It occurs to me though that one reason that we lose consistently is that we consistently fight in areas liberals hold strongly - the media, the government, etc.
Why aren't we as the productive class trying to take the fight to our stronghold - namely the private sector as a whole?
And then it hit me. Why aren't we doing to the left in the private sector what the left does to us in academia? Namely, holding liberal politics against liberals and kicking their asses out of the private sector.
Layoffs coming up? Instead of laying off the least competent or newest hires...who is the most liberal? Trying to decide between two candidates? See what they had to say about election 2012 on Facebook...etc...etc...etc
Thoughts?

I agree. My issue is that the mercy and chivalry shown were the exception, not the rule. That article made it seem like most pilots adhered to a code of honor, but all you have to do is watch the gun camera film from WWII to see that it just isn't true. All sides were ruthless.

And that's the problem with most Government efforts. This was a completely foreseeable possible outcome and they should have been LOOKING for this as the program took effect to judge whether it was being successful or just spreading the problem around. But Noooooo, they just start the program and assume it's going to work perfectly until years later when somebody makes the totally unsurprising discovery that the entirely predictable has happened.

Before the internet, there was a story that went around, about a toast offered in a RFC mess by an ace, to the consternation of his comrades. It began "To our gallant foe," and was full of all the fantastical bullshit that we fantasists always attribute to early aviators. Being full of bullshit, of course, it's quite likely a Brit pilot really did say it. Every year or so I go through the motions of looking it up, and it has vanished. Have you ever seen a reference to it?

Geez, it's like a man falling in love with an inflatable doll. The only reference I know of that phrase was a wreath placed on von Richtofen's grave by the RFC, but it was "To Our Gallant and Worthy Foe." When Oswald Boelke--the father of modern fighter tactics--died in an air accident, the British dropped a wreath on his aerodrome that read "To Our Brave and Chivalrous Foe."
Werner Voss was likely one of the greatest pilots who ever lived. He flew a Fokker Triplane and liked to go out alone. In his last battle, he faced seven of the best British pilots in service at the time, and they were flying SE-5As that totally outclassed the Fokker.
Yet Voss put bullet holes in all seven and managed to damage three severely enough that they had to be scrapped. The British reported that he was able to make his aircraft turn 180 degrees so he could fire at them while flying backwards. He seemed everywhere at once, looping around them like a hummingbird. All the Brits said he was the best pilot they'd ever seen.
But they killed him anyway. He didn't have a chance, seven to one. Only his superhuman skill allowed him to survive as long as he did.
The chivalry of the air was pretty much a myth.

I've read it. Erich Hartmann is the highest-scoring ace of all time.
The Nazis didn't allow their men to serve tours of duty. You served until you were killed. That's why German pilots racked up such massive scores.
In the USAAF, you served your tour of duty and then went home and trained new pilots. The Germans and Japanese had run out of pilots by the end of WWII.

I accompanied the missus to the hospital today, a little outpatient thing. Anyway a nurse attended her, same nurse I had a few months back. We nodded. I noticed that she was likely pregnant.
BUT! DID I SAY A WORD?
No. I was not born yesterday.
Later, as I was still sitting there with my mouth shut the nurse says she will be taking 4-5 months off.
I asked "Vacation?"
And both women, more or less in unison said "NO, you idiot, she's (I'm) pregnant!"
One word. One word sunk my battleship.

You might get lucky and find some of the old WWII era hangers still intact. AirGlades in Clewiston FL was a big training base for foreign ally pilots during the war and has some memorabilia at the FBO. There was a WWII hanger still there until around 2005 when one of the hurricanes flattened it.
Old stuff has a way of hanging around in the corners of hangers and storage lofts at smaller airports

Also try Lagunitas "Brown Shugga" (seasonal) if you can find it. Wowza!
I always felt that since Becks complies with Reinheitsgebot, I could drink a lot more of it and still wake up without a hangover than any other readily available bar brand. In my testing, this theory usually seemed to hold up well.

Ta-152 was an improved FW-190D-9. Some D-9/-12s were even fitted with Ta-152 tails.
The Ta-154 Moskito was an all wooden twin fighter designed to kill the DeHavilland Mosquito. Luckily an RAF bombing raid wiped out the plant that made the special glue the Ta-154s needed.

Speer pushed for diffusing that which could be diffused pretty early on. Component integration was still an issue with the rail getting hammered all the time, and a lot of war machinery assembly serialized (and stalled) through Schweinfurt's ability to crank out ball bearings...
...we (wisely) pounded the crap out of the ball bearing plants early and often.

Germany was churning out fighters like hotcakes. ME-262 production was dispersed widely. The 'rail' production in the forests was something. But lack of fuel and good pilots doomed all the efforts. Bodenplatt did not help either.

Ms. Peaches, have you tried to buy beer in quantity lately? A twelver has gone up around $3 in the last two years. Mostly due to fields that would have been barley going to corn to get sweet ethanol premiums, much like a loaf of bread is more expensive, since wheat fields are going to corn, and on and on.

That was the whole idea behind the Ploesti raids (which were largely ineffective).
There were dribbles of coal syn-fuel being produced, but those plants were constant targets.
If Hitler had cooled his heels for 5 years he'd have won the war, the Kriegsmarine would have been in top form, the syn-fuel plants built and operational (because you know the other guys are coming after your dead dinosaur oil supplies), and they might even have developed the A-bomb.
Fucker got greedy and it cost...

Perhaps that's a good place to open up the next front in local politics, but it looks like a loser, since our governor and his family made their money by way of selling gas and diesel.

60 B-17's shot down=600 men lost/POW. then we hit it a second time and lost another 60 or so aircraft. Ball bearing production was affected for a short time, but Germany had built up a massive reserve of ball bearings both local manufacture and imported from Italy Switzerland and Sweden.

Well, except that he was both a tactical and strategic idiot. He forbade his men to conduct fighting retreats, thus ensuring that the best of the German army and SS were killed.
He insisted on building tank destroyers instead of more vital tanks, and then he demanded that the same superstructure go on two different chassis. He used the first jet fighter as a bomber, and he diverted scarce resources into insane weapons like the Maus, a tank so heavy it couldn't cross any bridges without crushing them. German tanks were built to last decades, while the average tank had a combat lifespan of three weeks.
With Hitler in charge, the Germans were destined to lose, thank God.

They conducted exercises in '42? ... can't remember the details ... and erroneously concluded (it was a pre-conceived conclusion, I believe) that tanks were shit, and tank destroyers were the more important weapon. This influenced their armor decision-making from then on in WW2.

They have the numbers, but are at a definite hardware disadvantage. 5 years from now, China's advantage regarding the ability to throw hordes of young unmarried men without purpose, since they can't have jobs - since those went to children of the party, into battle may be enough to overcome all else. Never understood the tank-destroyer mania. U.S. tank destroyers had open turrets made of thin metal. You could kill the crews with a shrapnel shell or heavy machine-gun fire.
The speed of tank destroyers were supposed to save them, but how do you outrun artillery or machine-gun bullets?

Speaking for Tennesseeans, I'm willing to accept the dumbass taxes on consumer goods...to a point, being as we also do not have a state income tax. We have a 9.375% sales tax on nearly everything, and that should just be the end of it. Why, on an Earth where Ben Franklin himself declared "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." should a single cent be added to a purchase of beer or spirits? Isn't art supposed to free you to make what has yet to be made emotionally, esthetically, and physically?
That was a weak attempt at a joke. I've tried writing songs a time or two, so I have to imagine the visual arts are more difficult, if only because a musician can start over at any time, whereas paint is permanent. Is there a worse feeling while making something than the creeping suspicion that doing it just a little differently would be a little better?

Yes, China is starting to import a lot of food, and it looks like that will continue for a while. I saw a presentation last week that 5 different companies are investing $400-$500 million dollars in the next 2-5 years to expand grain export facilities in the Pacific Northwest (not sure if that was just U.S. Pac NW, or U.S. & Canadian Pac Nw) by about 450-585 million bushels. That is mostly due to expectations of increased exports to China.
And yes, the Chinese are using up their own arable land at a frightening pace. Not sure if it's currently mostly due to desertification, but about 10 years ago I saw an article saying they were losing arable land due to cities -- most of their arable land was in river valleys, which is where most of their cities were too, and they were expanding their cities over the top of their arable land.
And as Moe Lane commented, communists (and all central planners) are horrible at taking care of the land. P.J. O'Rourke made many observations along those lines when he was traveling in communist (and former communist) countries in the 1980s and 1990s.

Explorations of the Bismarck wreck by Robert Ballard turned up evidence that backed German claims that the ship was scuttled by the crew because the British hadn't done enough damage to sink it.
As I said, thankfully for history the Germans never developed an aircraft carrier

Mamma B, I'm an Irish-Catholic and come from a long line of them. Guiness was ours first in spite of their attempts to take it away. Let them think they have it, and it means they've made some kind of victory. I doubt they've done any such thing, seeing as modern manufacturing is not often informed of history. I'll continue to drink Guinness in Pub Cans or Draft at every opportunity. Their bottle offering is shit, and I recommend nobody try to drink them. There's not a glass in the world you can pour a Guinness pressurized bottle into which turns it into draft Guinness. What you get is a miserable hops-forward(!) flat version of a stout at first taste - the nose is unlike any pint you've ever had. The mouthfeel is awful, it has the metallic aftertaste of a bad red ale, and has nothing in common with a proper Guiness.

1. "Hey, at least that successful Mormon businessman didn't win."
2. "Didn't your lady parts warn you t...his would happen?"
3. "Look at the Bright Side, Gay marriage passed in four states."
4. "Hey, Big Bird still has a job. Isn't that the important thing?"
5. "I am sure Obama cares deeply about your situation. Maybe he'll send you a postcard from Hawaii."
6. "Well, look at the bright side, Rush Limbaugh is getting a massive tax increase."
7. "Hey! Now you'll have more time to play with your unicorn."
8. "Isn't it worth losing your job to know that religious organizations now have to pay for abortions and contraceptives?"
9. "Well, now you and Keith Olbermann have something else in common."
10. "Forward!"

American production was as such that no matter how many U-Boats that Doenitz got, we could produce far more than they could have shot down
The Sherman tank was considered to be a widow making piece of shit by all sides, but we made so many of them the superior quality of the Mark IV's, Tigers, and Panthers.
It also worked to our advantage that the Battle of Kursk cut down on the quantity of Wehrmacht tanks considerably

Spent three and a half years stationed in Iceland (was on Keflavik, with the squids). Loved that place....the people refuse to wear any color other than black and the women are gorgeous...although the men there REALLY don't like foreigners banging their women (more so than other countries).
Also, I'm not a big lamb eating guy, but you must get a lamb dog while you are there (with the frie onions and mustard). Best hotdog you will ever eat!

The American theory was the most airplanes per ship. The Essex class was designed before Pearl Harbor for such large air groups and more importantly to be series produced. So the US went for no armored hanger decks and wood over steel flight decks. So USS Franklin ended up being a gutted ship that never saw combat again.

WASHINGTON -- Your medical plan is facing an unexpected expense, so you probably are, too. It's a new, $63-per-head fee to cushion the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.
The charge, buried in a recent regulation, works out to tens of millions of dollars for the largest companies, employers say. Most of that is likely to be passed on to workers.

Japanese damage control never got better. Taiho sank more from the post torpedo explosions than the torpedo. Shinano, good gosh what were the Japanese thinking, sending an unfinished aircraft carrier without watertight doors out to sea where the rookie US submarine Archer-Fish got lucky and sank her.

It gives a really good, well-grounded, description of why the Japanese did what they did, when they did, at Midway. In other words, it wasn't all unicorn farts and sunshine, it was not a little rigid Japanese doctrine which lead to their mistakes.

Waterhouse, let me know what you think whenever you get around to the book. Weirddave at gmail dot com.
And Anna, they never did get any better at damage control, did they? Yorktown avoided Lexington's fate by changing damage control procedures, specifically WRT fuel lines, Taiho blew up because a junior officer vented gas fumes into the ship at large. One spark...BOOM! Funny that. On such minor details do empires swing.

But yeah the switch over to purging the fuel lines of all gas and filling them with CO2 was a major step forward. Still did not help Wasp when she caught Long Lance while fueling. BOOM. Major kudos has to go to the damage control parties who seemed to always perform miracles. Yorktown at Midway for shaking off two air attacks and still being able to carry the fight to the enemy.
As for location, Jackson, MS.

After the loss of Lexington and Yorktown, Wasp was transferred to the Pacific. Which brought Nimitz' up to four carriers - Saratoga, Enterprise, Hornet, and Wasp. The escort carrier Long Island was being used as an aircraft ferry. After supporting Operation Watchtower, Wasp was hit by a torpedo while refueling her aircraft. And she quickly went down.

Same thing with Molsen. Molsen tastes like crap south of New York. Up in Canada, it's pretty decent.
Same with Bud. Bud is bottled in Columbus, OH, which is closer to me than Miller or LaBatts, so it tastes a LOT better than either of those, down here.
Yuengling is also bottled closer to me down here, so it tastes a LOT better than Miller or Coors. Up north, Yuengling tastes like crap.
