Well a recent international Gallup poll attempted to answer this question.
The least emotional country in the world (at least according to self-reports) is Singapore - where only 36% of Singaporeans reported feeling any positive or negative emotions on a daily basis.
The Philippines, El Salvador and Bahrain were the most emotional countries with a large majority of the population experiencing emotions every day.
But having emotions doesn't mean they're necessarily fun ones or that they bring happiness:
In the Philippines - which ranked as the world's most emotional society, followed by El Salvador and Bahrain - analysts were quick to point out that being emotional doesn't necessarily equate with being happy. One reporter at GMA News stressed that the nation ranked 103rd out of 155 countries in the 2012 World Happiness Report - and that its 95 million inhabitants are said to be the most depressed in all of south-east Asia.
In fact the Danes are considered rather cool and unemotional yet have the highest consistent levels of happiness in the world:
Danes have more subdued, but more consistent, levels of positive affect as compared to Americans (Biswas-Diener et al., 2010). Although there should be little to no difference cross-culturally on intrinsic personality types such as introversion or extroversion, personality traits such as optimism and self-esteem are usually a product of one's environment, upbringing , and social groups.
There is little data on personality types of Danes; however, there exists data that suggests that Danes report more moderate changes in mood than people in the U.S. This could suggest a different, less emotional personality type for Danish people compared to Americans.
And how are Americans different? Well we go to 11... and sometimes -1:
In the U.S., people feel stronger feelings of positive emotions and have higher positive and the corresponding negative affect. I believe that this a contributing factor to higher levels of unhappiness.
Due to this, it seems that people from the U.S. are much more prone to having more peak experiences-more intense feelings of joy and excitement as well as anger and excitement.
Well I like to consider this just a side-effect of us having a bit too much joie de vive in our bloodstream which tends to convert over into a certain exuberant restlessness. Alcohol, boredom, and open spaces seem to help this process along.
Why Don't Americans Blame Someone for Bad Government?
Steve Teles has described our current system of government as a kludgeocracy - complex hacked kludges on top of more pieced together kludges. Most Americans agree it's too complex and inefficient yet can't quite identify who's at fault. The kludgeocracy seems to just grow on its own with no one in particular being responsible for it.
While liberals are harmed by the opacity of kludgeocracy's successes, conservatives are hurt by the lack of traceability of its failures. The fact that so much of our welfare state is jointly administered - either inter-governmentally or through contracting with private agents - makes it hard for Americans to attribute responsibility when things go wrong, thus leading blame to be spread over government in general, rather than affixed precisely, where such blame could do some good. The consequence of complexity, then, is diffuse cynicism, which is the opposite of the habit needed for good democratic citizenship.
...The last thirty years of American history have witnessed, at least rhetorically, a battle over the size of government.1 Yet that is not what the history books will say the next thirty years of American politics were about. With the frontiers of the state roughly fixed, the issues that will dominate American politics going forward will concern the complexity of government, rather than its sheer size.
CA Department of Education Fights School District for Daring to Spend Money on Children's Education
It used to be that whenever a man did something completely out of character or scandalous, people would refer to the saying 'Cherchez la femme' - look for the woman. Well perhaps this needs to be updated to a modern form: Whenever an organization does something utterly idiotic and against its own chartered purpose, cherchez la union.
Does Belafonte Think Conservatives Should Just 'Smell The Glove'?
Short answer: Yes.
What Happens When Your Parents Adopt A Murderer?
In 1984, in the quiet and modestly affluent suburb of Cape St. Clair, Maryland, a 17-year-old boy named Larry Swartz murdered both of his adoptive parents. In 1993, after serving nine years of his 12-year sentence, Larry was released from prison and came to live with us.
The reasons are never made clear in the article but I suspect the father really, really wanted a son - even a murdering one.
The Worst Movie Girlfriends of All Time
Jonah Goldberg starts the ball rolling by nominating Bruce Willis' girlfriend from Pulp Fiction:
Over on Twitter I started a conversation about bad girlfriends in movies, by noting that Bruce Willis's gal pal in Pulp Fiction is simply awful and deserves to be on any top-ten list of worst movie girlfriends. She forgets his watch. Cries at the drop of a hat. Goes off to a lavish breakfast while Willis is risking his life. Etc. This sparked other suggestions and a short-lived hashtag game #WorstMovieGirlfriends.
The Burger So Hot You Have To Sign a Waiver Before Eating It
When you have to wear gloves because you might get chemical burns from a spicy burger, maybe you've taken it a little too far.
Just one in ten of the 500 people who've taken the challenge have completed it so far, with Mr Bunce admitting he could only manage a quarter of the burger. He added: 'We did a four-week special of the Fallout Challenge, but after the special came to an end we had so many people asking to do it, it ended up becoming a permanent fixture on our menu.
'The sauce in the burger contains a variety of chillies including the Ghost Chilli and the Scotch Bonnet. But what gives the sauce a real kick is the Ghost Chilli extract which registers at 4.2 million Scoville units.
Yahoo group. That is all.
And my Twitter spew.

Ben Stiller's girlfriend in Meet the Parents.
She takes him to meet her parents and friends. During the entire time she never defends him, doesn't think twice about putting him in situations where he'll be the butt of jokes, doesn't give a second thought to whether he's enjoying anything, and apparently doesn't speak to anybody over the phone beforehand to make sure things go smoothly and they don't constantly embarrass the guy.

I don't remember the names, but I'd say the girlfriend the guy was on the phone with towards the end of Goodfellas, while the helicopter was circling.
He was yelling at her for blabbing about drugs and not maintaining proper opsec.
I once knew a girl like that, not to put too fine a point on it. It got to the point that I would cringe every time she called me. Posted by: rickl at December 13, 2012 10:44 PM
The girl "Lois" wasn't his girlfriend, she was the family babysitter who also worked for them as a drug courier. He told her not to use the house phone and she uses it anyway.

Problem is that we leave from Lee's Summit, so it's 45 minutes to the airport, and Rockport is one full bladder's distance from our home when I'm going to the ancestral grounds. NE City is a bit too far unless I want to start wearing Depends . . .

Hows this for an image. 25 years ago while at the mall I decided to stop in the food court and grab a slice of pizza for lunch. I sit down at a table in the food court, and a few tables over, a couple of 18 year old baby mamas decide to change their precious little angels' diapers, right on the table right in the middle of the food court.
My pizza went directly into the trash. I have never eaten at a food court since.

She's the worst movie girlfriend who's a plausible character. These other ones are all Movie Girlfriends. And the ones in Tarantino are intentionally so; he does Characters, not characters. But there's a factory somewhere out here in real life that builds a Nancy for every guy who owns a guitar.

One positive could have come from it. I was with the news anchor of the radio station that I had just gone to work at, and she was smoking hot, the same age as me and very single. But she was very much a fitness fanatic, so when I only took a couple of bites of the pizza then threw it away, she was impressed because she had her back to the diaper change. For the next several years she always wanted me to go with her when she was out doing appearances, but being a dumbass, I thought she just thought of me as a friend. I later found out she was very interested, but by that time we were both married. So we remained friends.
Did I mention she was a fitness fanatic? An ass you could bounce a quarter off of. She also got me to go do aerobics with her. She looked very nice in her aerobics gear, very nice.
Ummm, BRB.

Here is an e-mail I just Sent Speaker Boehner:
Dear Speaker Boehner,
Enough with the closed door meetings on fiscal cliff negotiations. Where is the transperancy? I demand that these discussions find the sanity of sunlight! I have been a contributor to Republicans and most specifically congressional Republicans that allow you to hold the position that you hold today, and I want nothing in return except for honesty, integrity and limited government from my elected officials, and neither my President, the Senate Majority Leader,...nor you, sir, seem to provide any of those qualities. And it is with a heavy heart that I see what is happening to our country, and see the side that is supposed to be on my side act scared of losing in future elections instead of what they should be scared of which is losing the greatest country the world has ever known. The bottom line is that the federal government cannot sustain the current spending rates and my son should not be burdened with unaccountable debt but should instead only be burdened with that of any 2-year-old of laughing and playing and loving and growing. Which side are you on!

"Take, for example, this quote translated into English from an article in the Prague newspaper Prager Zeitungon:
The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their president."

Damned if I know. My backlog spans multiple console generations. Like a junkie I picked up about 40 new games that were down around $10 on BF or since due to deals. But my play of recent titles is so light I'm relegated tot he casual category on that qualification.
At an educated guess I'd say Batman: Arkham City in terms of content value. I passed on both the GOTY versions of Uncharted 2 and 3 in favor of getting the regular ones real cheap because I discovered that pretty all of the added content was for multiplayer. Which would be completely wasted on me.

Hammerstein's very last lyric,"Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music, is invariably assumed to be a real Austrian folk song--indeed, a few years back, the White House went further, playing it at a state banquet for the Austrian president, under the impression that it was the country's national anthem.
Funny.

It gives it an odd sense of immensity which you might think was contraindicated in a quick pointing device.

The worse part of the movie was it ended. See a thrush fly off to the Lonely Mountain. It lands there and starts trying to crack a nut. This sound reverberates down into the Dwarven halls. Where it awakens Smaug who turns his head, gold cascades off, and his eye opens. Then the credits roll.
I could have been down for another 2.5 to 3 hours to finish the bleeping movie. Instead the credits rolled.

He added further: Our next four-week special will be to add a 50-ml HCl chaser instead of milk or iced tea... because people are increasingly stupid.

Rather than require 70 mm, due to the need to reduce cost, Trumbull's Showscan system used 65 mm celluloid at 48 FPS for capture and playback of the image. Trumbull then came up with a screenplay concept about replaying the experiences of one person into the mind of another. This would provide an excuse to have a movie packed with spectacular visual action sequences while being more than just a clip show. The story was given the title Brainstorm and went into production with Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood in the lead roles.
The production was almost lost entirely when the actress died suddenly by drowning under odd circumstances. Her scenes were only about 90% completed and the cloud hanging over the production meant that the studio was no longer willing to back the expensive proposition of Showscan as this meant equipping new projection systems in select theaters and a substantially higher cost per print than the typical release. The movie was completed with Natalie Wood being replaced by a stand-in who was mostly shot from behind to avoid showing her face. Some scenes were cut entirely. The movie was eventually released in conventional format after much delay.
Showscan languished without a showpiece to create audience awareness and build demand for further productions. It was mainly used in motion simulator rides in LBE (location based entertainment) venues in Las Vegas and other tourist destinations. The company got a special technical Oscar in 1993 and went through bankruptcy in 2002. Another company bought up the asset and is trying to promote a new digital standard today. James Cameron has announced his intention to have the Avatar sequels presented in either 48 or 60 FPS.
There you have it. What could have been one of the great innovations in theatrical films was derailed by the death of a single woman not directly involved with the technology.
