And a Merry Christmas to All!

10 Things You Didn't Know About "A Christmas Story"

Among them the fact that Porkys led directly to this movie being made.

Clark said in an interview that he was constantly asking the studios he worked for if they would be interested in doing a Christmas comedy based on the funny childhood stories that Shepherd wrote for Playboy and later published in his book 'In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.' Everyone turned him down until his raunchy high school comedy 'Porky's' became a massive and unexpected success. Clark said 'Porky's' gave him a free pass to pick his own projects and 'A Christmas Story' was next on his to-do list.

Also the house in the movie is located in Cleveland and is now a museum. Here's a photo I took last year when I happened to be in town.

A Spinal Tap Greeting: Christmas With The Devil

Why Gary Gygax Didn't Celebrate Christmas

Here's is a note he wrote to a gaming magazine in 1969. He was a devout Jehovah's Witness and very much into historical research. Ironically his D&D gaming system would later be accused on being satanic by some fundamentalists.

Got out of Rochester in the nick of time, apparently. That dumbass what shot the firefighters - that was a short walk from my house!

43 Gygax said that Jesus was born in the autumn, but there may be reason to believe that he was born in April: http://www.eclipse.net/~molnar/ I haven't read the book, but the website is very interesting. The writer is an astronomer, but relies on ancient astrology for his theory. It's important to realize that prior to about 1600, astronomy and astrology were one and the same. Apparently there was a powerful horoscope for April 17, 6 B.C., and people back then took that very seriously.

83 The thread about Romney not wanting to be president got me thinking.

It will take a man with an iron constitution to go what needs to be done in DC - and I think Romney knows as much as we do he isn't that guy.

So why did he fight so hard to beat Newt and Santorum? Because McCain and Huckleberry played ugly in 2008. Romney didn't want the presidency nearly as much as he wanted the Republican nomination.

92 What is the point of Big Dog?

It seems like a horse can do anything it can do. Plus you don't need to repair a horse, whereas that thing will need a traveling mechanic.

It will also need fuel. A horse can just eat grass and other stuff found in the wild.

I don't see the point of Big Dog.

A horse won't hold up to enemy fire for long. Big Dog doesn't spook and has a higher resistance to damage than an animal. The point is being able to send it places you don't want to risk a human and cannot trust an animal to execute.

One of the real problems with "moderate Republicans" like Frum is exactly that.

Just home from the Christmas party at my mother-in-law's house.  Pissed off my prog sister-in-law after she started a rant that people shouldn't have military-style guns.  I told her that I owned an "military style" rifle and was a free citizen, not a serf, and had absolutely no intention of surrendering my firearm.

She then back-tracked a little and said that new "assault rifles" should be banned.  I told her that a ban on new sales will not prevent someone from shooting up a school; then what?  I said a "Gun Free Zone" is actually an "Unarmed Victim Zone" and I rather thought that some of the teachers that died trying to defend their students with their bare hands would have liked to have had a gun.

She got pissed and left abruptly.  So all-in-all a good night since I didn't have to listen to her anymore.

Bonus:  Every.Single.Person I came into contact with, employees or fellow shoppers, were kind and in great spirits.

So there was that.  Now the husband is playing an old Bing Crosby Christmas CD of my mom's.  The kittehs have grown bored with stealing the bows off packages and removing low-hanging ornaments.

I wouldn't go quite that far.

Romney is a liberal himself, but he didn't fight for the party's nod to intentionally lose.

160 Obama had lots of illegal foreign donations, and we _know_ about blatant corruption in Philly, Chicago, and parts of Virginia. As others have pointed out, the electoral vote could have gone for Mitt with less than half a million voters in swing states going the other way. How many of those crucial voters were citizens, alive, and voting their real names? We all know the Republicans were much more energized (hell -- terrified!) than in '08, and we know that some of Obama's key support groups were sagging, yet somehow the vote total came out almost exactly the same? It just doesn't add up. Sorry to harsh on everyone's Christmas cheer, but I think we're living under a sham democracy now. The return of the DC-X.

We could have been flying those for a decade already if NASA wasn't such a collection of fuckwits. The Air force made great progress and stayed under budget, then they handed the project over to NASA and they promptly burned the prototype and kind of forgot about the whole thing.

I was at a test in New Mexico where they executed a maneuver that had never been done before and is critical to a reusable orbiter. History made and then thrown in the trash.

Opening presents at our leisure, making waffles for breakfast, taking the boy sledding, not leaving the dogs alone all damned day, not listening to the union-employed or union-retired assholes in the family go on about how great a year they've had and showing off their expensive if useless toys, etc. Drinking a little wine 'cause we don't have to get behind the wheel. 311 "Nativity Poem -

Louise Gluck

It is the evening
of the birth of god.
Singing &
with gold instruments
the angels bear down
upon the barn, their wings
neither white
wax nor marble. So
they have been recorded:
burnished,
literal in the composed air,
they raise their harps above
the beasts likewise gathering,
the lambs & all the startled
silken chickens. . . . And Joseph,
off to one side, has touched
his cheek, meaning
he is weeping-

But how small he is, withdrawn
from the hollow of his mother's life,
the raw flesh bound
in linen as the stars yield
light to delight his sense
for whom there is no ornament."

I tell people I'm in favor of shutting down NASA and placing all remaining US operation beyond the atmosphere with the Air Force and Navy working with private enterprise. They looked shocked and ask me if against space exploration. I tell them no, just the opposite. NASA has been holding us back from getting anything worthwhile done since the Apollo program ended.

If I wanted to reduce the pace of space exploration to a minimum, I'd create a government agency with no real goals where all the nerds would be told they had to work or give up on their dreams. Keep all of the talent out of the free market and channeled into useless wanking.

Imagine where we'd be right now if in 195x the government had created an agency to deal with computers the way NASA handles space exploration.

385 Prior to my first trip to Baltimore/DC, I had someone warn me not to use my turn signals. The tactic here which will keep you the safest is to speed up to block any lane the potential for anyone else to come into your lane Never let anyone in in front of you. Because invariably they will squeeze in too quick,or in too small of a space, which in turn cause you to stand on your brakes, increasing the likelihood you will get rear-ended while the guy who actually caused the accident goes on his merry way. A contrary to BCs experience, it's not usually an Asian woman on a cell phone (although they are a dangerous species) but rather it's a black dude in a piece of shit Altima.

Well here's the thing about the rich having noble moments.  Cameron was attempting to tell a story happening aboard the sinking of the Titanic.  So those noble moments are likely based on first hand accounts of what the survivors say actually happened.  So since he wanted that historical aspect he had to include it.  In a movie like Avatar where he has no feeling to follow actual human behavior under those circumstances he can engage fully in his liberal classwarfare fantasy.

In the third and seventh Star Trek movies the emotional high point is not when people die, on camera or off. It's when the ships die. If I come across those movies when channel surfing I'll hang around for those scenes if they're less than ten minutes away. Otherwise, I'll move on.

447 Submarines get a bad rap. The first week underway is pretty cool. Then fresh things start going away. First no more salad (not that I ate rabbit food), then no milk, then no eggs, then no ice cream.

We used to have a pool for when the fresh stuff would go. Poor Chop would try his best, but we'd go through 12 cows easy before the stuff came even close to bad.

That was non-deployment. Deployment fresh was gone in 2 days

451 Merry Christmas

Eternal Green

A Christmas Eve
Long past and gone
The Yuletide Carol
Of a heart gone wrong

We voyeur here
Old Scrooge and young
The Spirits Three
And the wisdom wrung

As it unfolds
The Carol play
I shed a tear
For the heart once gay

Then as the nails
Of life drive in
And hang the heart
We see all manÂ’s sin

Dear Mister Scrooge
For you a prayer
Your broken heart
Be it mended here

Though stranded be
On rocky shoal
GodÂ’s lifeboat sent
Here to save us all

So sing with Joy
And raise the strain
Light trees of love
And redeem our pain

That we like Scrooge
May all walk free
Accept GodÂ’s gift
Of Eternal Green

Thanks, Adriane! Hope your paint dries quicker than you get tired of it!

Of course, I have to share my own giant oopsie with paint. Right after we bought this house in 1997, we wanted to change its color and make sure it had a new coat of paint. So we got all these swatches and everything, and -- by odd coincidence -- ended up selecting a color that, when the paint was wet, was almost exactly the same color as the sun-bleached and thoroughly dry paint already on the house. After a few hours, it dried to the darker tint we wanted.

The first coat was a horror when it dried.

"Prior to my first trip to Baltimore/DC, I had someone warn me not to use my turn signals. "

Good God, that brings back memories. I lived in the DC area for many years. I consider myself lucky not to have died in a crash on the Beltway.

It was culture shock to move back to Wisconsin, where people actually slow down and let you change lanes when you put your turn signal on, rather than deliberately speeding up so you can't. In fact, people here use their directionals when they really don't have to, like when they move into a left-turn only lane. Just to make sure you know they're not going to make a right turn from the left lane. (I watched that vid about Russian drivers which was posted here a couple of weeks ago. Turning right from the left lane appears to be a popular move there.)

I don't think Midwesterners - urban ones, anyway - are always much more friendly than East Coasters. I'd give Southerners that award. But Midwesterners are more considerate drivers.

518 Re: Mr. Donelson telling the Tea Party it's not our country. Well, he's proably right. The pre-Civil War stock of the United States is probably already well outnumbered, and their cultural sway is over. And the lesson here for other nations is going to be this--think very carefully before you let in immigrants, because odds are your descendents will regret it. For it is the nature of man not to feel gratitude and adjust himself to what is there, but for him to eventually try to asset his own cultural dominance. So Mr. Donelson is perhaps right. It might be his nation not mine, Barack Obama's America, not mine. Trouble is, I don't sacrifice for that which is not mine, and though good ole Sam says I am part of this new America, I neither feel it, nor think I overly care too.

536 CBD: my condolences on the kid.  With ours, Mrs Chips and I made it clear from about 13 on that after he turned 18 his relationship with us depended on his actions.  If he was going to college or the military, he can stay at home when on vacation or leave.  If he decided to go to work instead we would let him stay with us for about 3 months so he could save money to set up his own place.  I told him that if high school ended and he was sitting on his ass, he had 48 hrs to clear out.  Mrs Chips is a scary Korean mom so Chips Jr knew that the 48 hr thing was serious.  He is now a freshman at K-state (where's teej?) and joined ROTC so he could pay for most of his school.  Good kid, still a pain in the ass.

Is Mrs CBD in agreement that Jr needs to straighten up? If so there are groups that can help you get Jr out of the house.  It really will be the best thing for him.  He has to make his own way, he just needs to see that.

Best wishes.  Be strong.

Posted by: BCochran1981 at December 25, 2012 12:22 AM (GEICT) No, you've got it all wrong. The wrapping paper and boxes go in the fire. Sure, it clogs the chimney a bit, but daddy doesn't have to lug 14 lawn bags of trash to the curb on Sunday night. Unless daddy has been into the nog a bit too much, in which case burning a present is a possibility. Might even be an accident.

566 Half the Facts You Know Are Probably Wrong
Old truths decay and new ones are born at an astonishing rate.

More daringly, Arbesman suggests, “Stop memorizing things and just give up. Our individual memories can be outsourced to the cloud.” Through the Internet, we can “search for any fact we need any time.” Really? The Web is great for finding an up-to-date list of the 10 biggest cities in the United States, but if the scientific literature is littered with wrong facts, then cyberspace is an enticing quagmire of falsehoods, propaganda, and just plain bunkum. There simply is no substitute for skepticism.

Toward the end of his book, Arbesman suggests that “exponential knowledge growth cannot continue forever.” Among the reasons he gives for the slowdown is that current growth rates imply that everyone on the planet would one day be a scientist.

First, we were all going to be lawyers ... now, we will all be scientists.
I'm skeptical.

Establishment:
Of course you are, my bright little star...
I've miles and miles of files
Pretty files of your forefather's fruit
And now to suit our great computer
You're magnetic ink!

First Man:
I'm more than that
I know I am...
At least, I think I must be

Inner Man:
There you go, man
Keep as cool as you can
Face piles of trials with smiles
It riles them to believe
That you perceive
The web they weave...
And keep on thinking free

Something to remember, morons, about lefties. They can win elections, they can push their insanely wasteful and stupid agendas on us - but that doesn't make them happy. Because nothing can make them happy. They hope politics will fill the hole in their souls, but it doesn't - not for long. So they latch their hopes onto the next program, the next Great Leader, the next crusade. It won't work- ever.

So even when they win, they lose.

Thank the Good Lord you are not a leftist.

And, speaking of which, I wonder if there are any stats on the Band of Banned.....I'm speaking more out of intellectual curiosity than anything else -- there have been far more outright trolls banned than anyone who showed a spark of actual personality, and if the same tired meme has been the trigger numerous times, perhaps the meme could tell us something that could refine the speed and accuracy of the banhammer. Like finding statistically that someone is much more likely to say "fudgesickle" and get banned within 10 posts of saying "drumstick", there could be an alert whenever "drumstick" was used without "drum" or "chicken" or "turkey".

622 250 We'll be spending the day tomorrow with the lib life coach sis in law, whose daughter is the scrunt who insulted our son last year (out of ear-shot of me and my husband). Her crazy-assed mother just bragged in a family e-mail that she hired a medium, and "spoke" with my dead f-i-l and they had a "great conversation" and he gave her "fabulous" financial and business advice.

I just want to drive my head through the windshield on the way to ATL tomorrow. There is no hope. And these are The People of Obama.

640 Regarding the crziness of the world there was an old neighbor over tonight and we were talking about the school shootings. There is a kid with autism/aspbergers (and i am in no way saying there is a correlation) that was in her sons class. The kid is violent to most people. He kicked her son multiple times and also strangled him another time where the marks were still visible after two weeks. Another time he held a knife to a kids throat - the kid was in a wheelchair. That finally got him a suspension. My friend threatened to take her kid out and sue the school to pay for the expense so they put the attacker in another school. Anybody want to wager this will be a kid where 'there should have been a sign' down the road.

641 Okay a few items to get off my chest. 1. The chick in the picture on the overnight thread looking out the window and holding a brew is hawt. I'd have her screaming "I'm Santa's slut!" in no time. I know it is just a drawing. Just saying . . . 2. I really, really want the Queen of England to whack Obozo upside the head with her gloves the next time they meet and say, "Your father was and you are as thick as a plank! Now get me a grown up with a pair I can talk to." 3. The next time some Libtard tries to compare Christianity to Islam, tell him that Jesus washed His disciples' feet. Mo washed his follower's swords. 4. Saw a "homeless" guy this morning by a busy intersection holding up a sign saying he is hungry. About 10 yards away was his backpack and a little lunch cooler open with what appeared to be food in it. See this all the time on major, and now minor intersections. Every time I want to stop and beat their lazy asses silly. I am sick of the professional free shit crowd and the structures that have built up around them to promote their lifestyle. 5. I really, really, really hate whining students who do not study. Did you not hear me tell you, like, every day, that you need to study organic chemistry two to three hours per day every day to have any hope of passing, much less earning top marks. Well the world will always need strippers and guys who can swing a pick axe. 6. My son made my wife and I play the Cars app at the same time on our iPads, all three of them going at the same time and he's running back and forth telling us where to go and what to do. Priceless.

691 Got plenty to do wile away the night. Several new laptops to prep for CES. Lenovo is a big customer for us and they don't want us bringing any non-Lenovo gear with us for network monitoring. So we found a good sale on a suitable model that will get the job done for the right price. The only thing lacking is dual-band WiFi but we can add that via USB. We run dual-band networks and thus need our machines to be able to see it.

Ninite comes in very handy for this. It gets about 50% of all the stuff we require installed in one command.

And to pass the time I've also got the second half of an anime series entitled Karin. The title character is a cute teenage vampire girl with a problem. She isn't a normal sort of vampire like her family. She likes food and sunlight and puts blood in her prey rather than drawing it out. Her 'victims' feel extraordinarily strong and cheerful afterward.

If Karin doesn't get rid of her excess blood it tends to build up until it spurts out her nose. This makes a bizarre counter to the Japanese convention of depicting males overcome with lust as having nosebleeds due to high blood pressure.

A new boy at school is the latest generation of a long line of vampire hunters but most of what they believe about vampires is complete nonsense. Worse, he is completely incapable of recognizing vampires and thinks Karin is the perfect woman whom he must do his utmost to woo.

719 I'm pretty much done with the politics business- to mangle one of Mom's quotes, "America made its bed- now they have to lie in it." Me, myself, and mine own. Cat ladies & Black Angels & yardmen. Maybe a few others. Merry Christmas to you all anyway.

721 Checking out one of the winning websites, White House Dossier, I learned that the first family flew its chef to Hawaii, and then went out to dinner at the fancy Japanese restaurant. No word yet on whether they ordered the $88 Australian Wagyu ribeye.

722 The house that served as a SET, was in Cleveland.  The Actual house was about two blocks North of my mothers birthplace, in Hammond.

725 Figures the HQ's x-mas photo would be racist and heteronormative. Dude looks like a 1% bank exec, and the photo is obviously staged to suggest that only traditionally attractive blond-haired women are worthy of his company. Probably going to have sex missionary style after that beer and spit out another little Yalie banker. Racists heternorms!1! Who's going to pay for my student loans and birth control??!?!?

726 If you stop at the Christmas Story house, consider getting a burger at the Rowley Inn across the intersection. It's a nice little neighborhood bar that opens early in the morning.

731 A Merry and white Christmas to you all, but this is Texas and the white stuff is hail.  If anybody has Allan's phone or email it's time for him to get fragile things like vehicles under protection.

732 I notice there's no Kwanzaa links ... let's delve a little deeper into the background of the father of that important institution then: Maulana Karenga (born Ronald McKinley Everett on July 14, 1941) is an African-American professor of Africana Studies, activist and author, best known as the creator of the pan-African and African-American holiday of Kwanzaa. Karenga was a major figure in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s and co-founded with Hakim Jamal the black nationalist and social change organization US, which means "Us Black people". In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felonious assault and false imprisonment. A May 14, 1971, article in the Los Angeles Times described the testimony of one of the victims: "Deborah Jones, who once was given the Swahili title of an African queen, said she and Gail Davis were whipped with an electrical cord and beaten with a karate baton after being ordered to remove their clothes. She testified that a hot soldering iron was placed in Miss Davis' mouth and placed against Miss Davis' face and that one of her own big toes was tightened in a vise. Karenga, head of US, also put detergent and running hoses in their mouths, she said. They also were hit on the heads with toasters." Karenga explained his actions by saying that one of the women he had tortured had attempted to assassinate him, but he had no evidence. Karenga argues that his imprisonment was political. Some scholars have raised similar questions. Obviously this speak-truth-to-power icon is a hero in my libtard community. Happy Kwanzaa everybody!!!

734 Merry Christmas everyone!

I've got both boys home.....one from the Army, the other from the Marines. My son in the Army is still in BT, but they gave everyone ten days leave for the holidays, (instead of the usual leave granted after completing BT), so it's a good Christmas here. It snowed last night, so everything is white and Christmasy looking....with more on the way tomorrow, apparently. I've already laid in the necessary supplies of beer, and.....well, just beer, so I'm good to go. Let it snow!

736 I'll bet there are many who dream of saying; "LS3, attack." "LS3, kill all humans." or "LS3, cook breakfast." And not necessarily in that order.

737 Obama"s numbers still trending up.
