Hans Christian Andersen - The Fir Tree

Out in the woods stood a nice little Fir Tree. The place he had was a very good one: the sun shone on him: as to fresh air, there was enough of that, and round him grew many large-sized comrades, pines as well as firs. But the little Fir wanted so very much to be a grown-up tree.

He did not think of the warm sun and of the fresh air; he did not care for the little cottage children that ran about and prattled when they were in the woods looking for wild-strawberries. The children often came with a whole pitcher full of berries, or a long row of them threaded on a straw, and sat down near the young tree and said, "Oh, how pretty he is! What a nice little fir!" But this was what the Tree could not bear to hear.

At the end of a year he had shot up a good deal, and after another year he was another long bit taller; for with fir trees one can always tell by the shoots how many years old they are.

"Oh! Were I but such a high tree as the others are," sighed he. "Then I should be able to spread out my branches, and with the tops to look into the wide world! Then would the birds build nests among my branches: and when there was a breeze, I could bend with as much stateliness as the others!"

Neither the sunbeams, nor the birds, nor the red clouds which morning and evening sailed above him, gave the little Tree any pleasure.

David Gregory: Either a Liar or a Deliberate Felon

It's illegal to possess a  high capacity magazine in DC - yes even for the MFM elite.

It may be even worse for Gregory and NBC News.  According to an e-mail received by The Patriots Perspective website, which originally broke the Gregory story, NBC News had inquired whether it was permitted to use the magazine and was told that it was not permitted.  The authenticity of the email has not been verified.

Merry Christmas Gunnery Sergeant Hartman Style

Operation Christmas Drop

Every year for 60 years the US Air Force has dropped gifts to the people of Micronesia.

This large-scale humanitarian mission had relatively humble beginnings. According to the 36th Wing historian, the exact origin of the operation is unknown, but legend has it that the first supplies were dropped around Christmas in 1952. An aircrew, assigned to the 54th Weather Squadron at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, flew a WB-29 aircraft over a tiny island and saw the villagers below. The crew then packed a box and sent it down on a parachute used for weather buoys. This became tradition and continued each year until Operation Christmas Drop was officially named and organized in 1958.

Looks like Elvis is proudly showing off a German Drilling, that is, a side-by-side shotgun, with a single rifle barrel nestled b'neath and b'tween the smoothbores.

Sure would like to know the history of the photo, and the provenance of the drilling!

Merry Christmas, y'all!

Conclusion: the anime Ghost Hunt did it first and did it better, especially in keeping all the necessary plot points necessary to understand the plot (and the final denouement). *throws up hands* Also, Harry Daniel looked like he didn't eat for the entire filming of the movie - I guess that's sort of the hollow look they were looking for, but I just wanted to stuff some food in him.

64 That menu is actually pretty interesting. Breakfast and Dinner (the midday meal which we call lunch) were the biggest meals. Tea was traditionally served at 4:00 PM if I'm not mistaken, and Supper, the evening meal, was a light meal. That makes sense. The morning and noon meals were the biggest ones. They were during the day when people were most active. The evening meal, supper, which we call dinner, was lighter since there is less activity at night.

I certainly hope the 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment in India had a nice Christmas in 1934.

Got into politics just a bit today when my lib older brother began with the class warfare and tax the rich talk. He brought up the Great Depression and I said it's been proven that FDR's policies prolonged the Depression. He said our dad (a long decreased Reagan dem) would disagree. Then he brought up "A Christmas Carol" and the workhouses - I said,"I'm quoting actual data (Amity Shole's book about the Depression) and your answer is a 19th century novel?" He got upset and left the room.

I am invited to celebrate New Year's Eve at my BIL's cottage in Northern Wisconsin. He is conservative but has many lib relatives. I ended up screaming "F you" at one of them during the run-up to the Walker recall election. I am debating if I really want to drive two hours on New Years Eve to argue with libs. Dealing with one today was enough.

81 Saw David Gregory in a restaurant in LA over about a month ago.  I knew he's tall (6' 4-6") but I was surprised at how skinny he is.  Not just the naturally thin build skinny, but the starve yourself diet kind of of skinny.  Had a kind of "twink" look to him.

82 It's violent and honest. When I say NSF 16, I'm a little old fashion about things, but I mean 16. My wife won't read it because she knows whats real and what isn't. She finds that part of my family very disturbing.

113 Donna V., Everyone in my family made it for Christmas at my dad's and no politics were discussed. Most of my relatives are conservatives except for a retired union teacher sister in law and a nephew who has always been a low achieving douchebag. Usually we avoid confrontation and don't get into politics, but for a little over a year now the sister in law has gotten all union asshole on us. Today she didn't bring anything up. So it was great. The nephew is the type of dolt who makes one dumb decision after another, completely irresponsible, so of course, he's in favor of government programs that help losers at the expense of the taxpayers. My sister, his mother, is fed up with him, but there's really nothing she can do. He throws his money away on crap, then has to buy a car through J B Byrider because his credit is bad. 156 Because they're not going to arrest him. He's not a pleb. He's elite. Posted by: Not Ready to Unsock at December 25, 2012 11:14 PM (BgIBZ) They will determine the magazine was a prop or replica. They will "determine" this by asking MSNBC. I'd love to see Gregory do the perp walk, as well as the person who brought it to him, largely because "journalism" needs a class 5 attitude correction. They think they're doing God's Work by bringing leftism to the masses and bashing everything else, and they imagine they're above the law because of it. When Lyin' Sam Donaldson said the country wasn't the TEA Party's, it was "ours," he will explain later he meant all Americans, he actually meant him and people who think like him. About our only hope against the FSA is the arrogance of their "organizers."

165 I was going to post my great uncle's 1918 regimental Christmas card from the 75th Canadian Infantry Battalion but it looks like the anonymous picture hosting sites now want you to sign up for an account first and not just allow you to upload directly anonymously. (And 'image frog' that I had used for this in the past timed out while I was trying to access it.)

Its cover is similar to the one at the link including the regimental ribbon although in dark green, black and red for a "Rifle" regiment rather than in the red of the infantry. The inside is plain however with a list of battle honours on the one side and the Christmas greetings on the other signed in pencil by the Lt. Colonel.

It was sent to my grandmother as his closest next of kin as my great uncle had been KIA on Sept. 30, 1918 during the final 100 Days offensive.

177 So watched the Muppet Christmas Carol for the first time in over a decade. Damn, that really was as good as I remember. Michael Caine was great. That's how you do a Muppet movie. That insipid piece of shit that they released last year doesn't hold a candle. And watched A Christmas Story right after. Damn, I've seen that movie at least two hundred times (I might exaggerate a touch) and it never stops being awesome. Always something to enjoy about it. This viewing was all about the performances. Good gravy but the acting is above and beyond the acting in most Oscar winning performances (most of which, it seems, given for being able to cry on cue). No, I didn't watch it on TBS. Opted to catch my bluray copy. THAT'S how you watch a movie!

179 149 Hidy-ho, Morons.

My mother just forced me to watch some ridiculous dreck on Lifetime about a shrink (all of 25 years of age) in miniskirts who violates all the ethics codes and several state laws then falls in love with a patient who may or may not really be Santa Claus. Followed by the local nightly news, which didn't tell me anything useful except today's high temperature (which I could have located online in 15 seconds instead of sitting through four teasers and nine minutes of advertising).

I can't believe people do that shit on purpose. What a waste of life (compared to, say, hanging out on the internets talking about booze, amirite?!)

And I may be stuck here, there's a fucking blizzard back home.

217 These machine gun cartridges aren't the only problem. Some "gun nuts" use a machine called a "reloader" that can fill up these cartridges with shells at home. There are virtually no laws whatsoever to keep these people from loading their clips with armor piercing cop killer hollow point bullets. In addition, there is nothing to stop someone from using depleted uranium in their shells. These bullets are used by the US military to blow up tanks. If a child were to pick up a machine gun loaded with these cartridges, after they accidentally shot themselves in the head, the clip would go through all the walls of all the houses in the neighborhood. 234 Re: Elvis picture-- Well, since you are thinking of pudgy "Kings" and guns: It has occurred to me that if semiautomatics are banned it will actually be an opportunity. Oh, it will be a blatant violation of the Seond Amendment, that I grant you. But it will be an opportunity to do some much needed house-cleaning in society. You see, the argument for semi-automatic, and especially "assault rifle", bans will go something like this--there is just no *real* need for these sort of things in society. You don't *need* them to hunt, you don't need more than five shots to kill a deer, the people are not going to rise up in rebellion any time soon (true statement), you can defend yoyrself at home with a revolver, etc. etc. --and these may in fact all be hard things to argue against. Semi-autos and assault rifles may be *desired* by many, but they may not be absolutely *necessary* for society to function, and society will not immediately fall apart if they are denied--an argument I have trouble countering. Now, I think "not infringed" is a pretty clear statement and guideline, but politics, the rule of law, and the principle of right only rarely intersect, so I could see the "not really needed" argument winning. In which case my response would be...Good. Because, you see, there are some other things we can take a look at once we decide we can use the "desirement versus requirement" argument. Take the First Amendment. You don't really *need* to be able to look at pornography. The Republic will not fall apart if you can't get access to it. It's a desire, not a need, and it does have costs for society. The First Amendment is really about insuring ability to have political speech, but it is pornography, not political speech, that we have decided to make absolutist prohibition statements about the ability of government to regulate. Once we decide to ban the guns, perhaps we can take a look at some of these other non-essential interpertations of the Bill of Rights as well, that reflect things folks want to do that others think it woud be better if they couldn't. I thus suggest we look at the porn if we ban guns. That is, if we wish to be consistent on this whole desire of the individual versus societal desire for safety and order thing, thus being willing to infringe on the Bill of Rights deal. Now, it just could be, of course, that, this whole gun ban thing just could all be yet another exercise in the continuing attempt of the left to make everybody believe and behave as they do, via force of government action, with internal consistency be hanged. In which case, such imperium didn't work forever for the Puritans, it didn't work forever for the mainline Protestants, heck, it didn't work forever for the Soviets inside Russia. What makes the Progressives think they are going to keep what they have, much less expand it into an "unconditional surrender" victory that will serve to eliminate functional opposition, and enshrine Progressive values, for all time?

254 I'm shocked that nobody on this smart military blog has mentioned that Charles Durning passed away at 89.  Called the king of the character actors, he was in films such as The Sting (the detective chasing Redford's character), Dog Day Afternoon, The Hindenburg (as Capt. Pruss, with Brian Dehenny as the Hindenburg), North Dallas Forty (the coach), Tootsie (romantically pursuing Dustin Hoffman), etc, etc, etc.

During WWII, Durning landed at Omaha beach, later was wounded and hospitalized, returned to combat and was in the Battle of the Bulge.  He was one of the few survivors of a massacre of POW's by the Germans at Malmedy.   He was awarded the Silver Star and 3 Purple Hearts.  One of the Purple Hearts was for bayonet wounds suffered in hand to hand combat.  Durning survived that attack by killing the German soldier with a rock.  He spent several years in and out of Army hospitals for both his physical and psychological wounds.  Apparently he had recurring nightmares about the war for the rest of his life.

Durning rarely talked about his combat experiences but was a supporter of activities to support veterans.  He participated in the National Memorial Day Concert from 2004 on.  This link is to his 2007 appearance (please excuse the beginning with Tom Hanks).  While Durning was an accomplished actor, he isn't acting in this video:

I live in LA and know many folks in the entertainment industry, including family members, and I have worked as an extra many times.  For the most part actors have always impressed me as frivolus folks.  Charles During, more than most, earned the right to be frivolus.  RIP PFC Charles Durning.

It's been quite a while since there was a decent one. "Pitch Black" comes to mind, but that's over a decade ago and is SF/horror, really. It concerns me that H/wood has either not seen fit to do some classic works, has dropped them into preproduction limbo or totally fucked up the story. "I, Robot" and "Bicentennial Man" and forever fucked now. "Rendezvous with Rama" will never get made and there's a bunch of great novels and short stories that don't seem to tickle hollywood's fancy. I don't count comicbook hero adaptations as SF movies.

270 Update on my friend.  They released him yesterday without pinpointing the bleed.  This morning at 3am I got a call he was back in the hospital.  He had another vomiting blood episode.  This time though, on Christmas day, they ran a cystoscope down his gullet, found the bleed and clamped it off.  He looked a heck of a lot better and stronger than I have seen him for a while.  Heck of a Christmas gift huh?  Kudos to the doctor and team that did this on Christmas day.  If they hadn't found the bleed I didn't expect him to live out the week.  This doesn't mean he is out of the woods.  He still has advanced hepatitus and the complications that come with it but medication may have the time to help now.  He isn't jaundiced yet.

There are very few stupid questions when talking guns - the shit gets arcane very fast.  When a barrel is "free-floated", what that means is that the barrel is only secured to its receiver (the part or parts that feed round in), with no contact to other fixed parts, e.g. the stock, or in the case of an AR patterned rifle, the handguard.  This tends to aid in accuracy.  Your assumption was 100% on the money.

My original comment re: free-float was in relation to the EBR AR-15, the curse of the American Gun Culture [ominous music].  You can easily float a barrel on those for way less than $500.  If you're into the long range game (full disclosure - I'm not), my understanding is that costs go up exponentially to squeeze out every last drop of performance.  If I missed your point, feel free to correct me.

This was my first thought as well.  Hidden W would reveal itself if one knew the exact volume of a pure gold bar of standard size, assuming the ability to measure the mass and volume of other bars to a very accurate and precise level.

354 Old Sailor Poet:

B dates as late as 1898: "Every distinct chemical compound occurring in inorganic nature, having a definite molecular structure or system of crystallization and well-defined physical properties, constitutes a mineral species"

The Victorian Ere scientists did not believe that anything was created by long-term processes. At that early date, Geologic science hadn't settled on continental drift, or an Earth that was older than 6000 years.

Lord Kelvin had calculated that the maximum burn time for the Sun, using the most efficient chemical processes known, was only 17,000 years, and thus spent most of his career trying to refute any evolutionary or geologic theories that concluded that the Earth was older than that.

To his credit, when he saw the numbers for energy production by Uranium fission, which would allow a body the size of the Sun to burn for at least tens of millions of years, he immediately recanted his earlier views.

365 Chemjeff: If a good faith bank bar is suspect ( e.i., passed through Chinese hands ), they drill the damned thing, and then re-weigh and re-mark the new post drilling weight on the bar.

The gold scrap gets sold to an assayer.

( or they just do absolutely nothing, and pretend the bar is still good, and hope some sucker buys it from them )

If there is a tungsten block in the center, drilling the bar will reveal it.

392 Any thoughts on .416 Barrett? When they first announced the cartridge, it sounded very promising in terms of BC. They said it would stay supersonic comparable to the big .50, but I haven't read anything regarding the round being fielded. Posted by: StPatrick_TN at December 26, 2012 01:38 AM (lJJMb) My understanding is the .416 has supply issues, as in out of stock alot plus it is expensive to shoot. the .408 Cheytac is in the same boat .338 is way more affordable than .416 and .408. There is some chance that the .375 is promising

They can't figure out which PC rules to follow and what trumps what right now.  Perhaps somebody can make a decision tree to explain what racism is acceptable and under what conditions.  Perhaps then the permanently aggrieved could have a tool to find common ground, or at least a common target, as soon as the creator of the tool was discovered.  Perhaps.

402 re: "Geologic science hadn't settled on continental drift, or an Earth that was older than 6000 years."

Aside from Ussher's famous guess, which seems to have been crafted with an eye to matching Johannes Kepler's contemporary estimate, earth's Biblically deduced age has pretty much always hovered around 8-10,000 years. Prior to the discovery of radioactivity, scientific/philosophic estimates of the earth's age ranged from 75,000 to infinite years. "6000 years" was a fleeting outlier, confined to Kepler fans and some Irish Catholics.

I hear a lot of people believe it now (and I doubt it), but back then, almost nobody did. The "Until [insert science-y thing here], people believed..." part of the "6000 years" story is just flattery of the storyteller and his audience. It never really happened (much).

Back in the 90's I was paying close attention to the FBI's LEO's killed/assaulted yearly reports.  They gave fairly detailed descriptions of the murders and particulars on the perps.

Looking through about 10 years worth, a consistent pattern emerged. ~30% of the cops that were murdered were killed by perps with prior arrests for murder.

444 The "convicted felon" thing is one of the problems we have.  Felony firearms charges get bargained away far too often and you're left with 1st degree misdemeanors for the record...which don't disqualify.

I think its impossible to get prosecutors to ever change, they want a high conviction rate, and they prefer it never goes to trial ending in a plea deal.

If we had a category of plea where someone cops to the felony for the purposes of a NICS check, but it isn't recorded elsewhere as a felony conviction and entails no additional jail time, we'd have a more effective NICS, and prosecutors can continue playing their bullshit stats games.

453 I'm actually somewhat pleased......had a discussion with the BH about relocating that wasn't adversarial. Didn't rise to the "RUN!" level, but gained some ground.

In case you're wondering about "RUN!" -- I live in California, real estate (half interest in my home) is my second largest asset group, and progressives have won an overwhelming majority in both houses of the state legislature -- there are no filibusters, supermajorities, or state constitutional issues to restrict them.....and they've had a serious bug up their behinds about Prop 13 since 1978.

I fully expect that the reverse of the Prop 13 effect will happen once the Progs start tampering with it -- real estate gained in value once purchasers could be certain of future cash-outflows for taxes. Just think about that in slo-mo.....an investor who is looking to invest would like to see a projection  with inflows for rent and outflows for depreciation, taxes, insurance, repairs, etc.. The more solid (with positive return), the more valuable. If taxes could be $10K this year and $20K the next, how would an investor value a deal? At the higher tax rate.....which means a lower price.

455 Killing Prop. 13 would be something to bring joy to Jerry Brown's tiny heart. It would be the crowning achievement of the nation;s dumbest electorate in bringing back the governor who fought the legislation that allow the state to remain functional as long as it did.

My freshly widowed mother would have been forced to sell the family home and leave the state if Prop. 13 hadn't passed back then. She would have made a considerable profit over what we'd paid for the house in 1974 but where would we have gone that wasn't a severe step down in the now inflated market? We would simply have been forced to go to another state, which meant one of three choice where my mother had family and history: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, or Florida. None of them hold a lot of appeal to me as a permanent state of residence.
