Paul Krugman says in this Guardian piece that he "grew up wanting to be Hari Seldon, using my understanding of the mathematics of human behaviour to save civilisation." For those of you who have read one or more of the books in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, this makes a lot of sense.
I remember feeling the same way after reading Asimov's Foundation series. But then later I came to understand how complex (and even random) human behavior can be and how the mathematics of even deterministic systems often preclude meaningful long-term predictions. So Asimov-style psychohistory will probably always be science-fiction fantasy.
But as WRM points out Krugman has not only given up on the idea of psychohistory itself but today is now playing the role of Seldon's imperial enemies:
But there is an irony in Krugman's claim to have been inspired by Hari Seldon to take up social science: In his column in the NYT, he often comes off not so much like Seldon but like one of the Galactic Empire's elites, mistrustful of the Hari Seldons out there predicting the collapse of the "empire"-or, that is, the blue model. In "The Psychohistorians," the head of the imperial committee charged with prosecuting Seldon reaches an important decision. This politician intuitively understands that Seldon's theory of imperial decay is right, but as a card-carrying member of the elite he can't just let Seldon off the hook for his dangerous ideas. So he splits the difference: he reduces the sentence for Seldon and his followers from death or imprisonment to exile to the galactic hinterland of Terminus, where they can work out the plan to save civilization in peace.
That's pretty much what the blue intellectual establishment does today: it doesn't silence freethinkers but it pushes them out to the fringes.
[These are actually the old covers for the series but since my copies were hand-me-downs from my father they're the only ones I ever knew]
Why UofRI Professor Erik Loomis Should be Fired
Because of the incipient fascism in his writings.
You see the real reason why Loomis should be fired-or at the very least investigated for what he said-is that his comments are fascist. Bear in mind, I define fascism as nothing more than a lack of belief in democracy itself.*Consider for instance this comment by Loomis:
You are goddamn right we should politicize this tragedy. F__k the NRA. Wayne LaPierre should be in prison. [Cursing censored by me.]
So he believes that LaPierre should be imprisoned for what exactly? To the best of my knowledge, LaPierre has broken no laws. All he has done is advocate for a policy-reduced restrictions on gun ownership-that Loomis disagrees with. Advocacy of the criminalization of opinions you don't agree with is the very essence of fascism. He repeats that thought several times:
Wayne LaPierre is a criminal and should be in prison for complicity with murder. 27 counts.-
Dear rightwingers, to be clear, I don't want to see Wayne LaPierre dead. I want to see him in prison for the rest of his life. #nraterrorism
So What Do We Really Know About the Sandy Hook Shootings?
Even now a lot of the reporting seems to be guessing and just making shit up:
But as it turns out, a great deal of the reporting in the Newtown massacre was incorrect, whether merely irresponsible or purposefully misleading it's difficult to say. As far as we know now (which isn't very far), the killer's "mental illness" seems to not have been of the commitable variety, and there seems to have been no prior hints of his dangerousness. He took the guns from his mother, but how she stored them and how he obtained them is completely unknown. Reports from a friend or friends that she had taken her son to shooting ranges seem to be unsubstantiated as well (although he visited one, he apparently was alone at the time, and there doesn't seem to be a clear record of him shooting there).
Also can you predict future violence from mental patients? Not really says Theodore Dalrymple:
In fact, psychiatrists are no better than others at predicting violence by disturbed people, except possibly among the psychotic. They tend to overestimate the dangers, and in making predictions, they face the problem of the false positive and the false negative. In the case of a false positive, you think that someone is dangerous when he isn't; in the case of a false negative, that he is not dangerous when he is. False predictions of rare events (such as mass killings) generally outweigh true ones by a large factor-an important point to remember, especially if you wish to grant or withdraw civil liberties on the basis of such predictions.
Not long ago, I was asked to participate in an inquiry into a spate of murders committed by psychiatric patients. The killings seemed to be statistically abnormal (recalculation showed that they were not). We were asked to determine whether there was a single type of act, or omission, by the psychiatric services common to all the murders which might help explain them. ...Yet, except in one case, I found no evidence that the low standard of practice had actually resulted in a preventable killing, despite the immense power of the retrospectoscope-the medical instrument that provides us with wisdom after the event and that sometimes does lead to improvements in practice that saves lives, though at other times it provides us only with scapegoats.
8 US Sailors Suing TEPCO Over Fukushima Radiation
In March 2011, the USS Ronald Reagan participated in Operation Tomodachi, an American military effort to provide aid and assistance to Japanese tsunami victims. The aircraft carrier, which was equipped with advanced radiation detection devices, kept a safe distance from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. At one point, the media reported that the ship had been exposed to a tiny and non-dangerous amount of radiation:"The maximum potential radiation dose received by any ship's force personnel aboard the ship when it passed through the area was less than the radiation exposure received from about one month of exposure to natural background radiation from sources such as rocks, soil, and the sun."
The ship was apparently about 100 miles away from the plant, way beyond the evacuation distances recommended by both the Japanese government and U.S. government.
And now eight sailors aboard the ship are suing TEPCO over potential reduced lifespans due to radiation exposure. Given that the USS Ronald Reagan is itself nuclear-powered I'm pretty sure that the radiation exposure of the crew is carefully monitored and any dangerous levels would have been enough for the ship to move further away and follow decontamination procedures. So count me completely skeptical.
College Student Being Stalked by Parents
There are helicopter parents and then there parents who really really need a new hobby not involving their adult daughter.
A music theater student has won a stalking order against her parents who admitted they installed monitoring software on her computer and phone to ensure that she succeeded.David and Julie Ireland have been ordered to have no contact with their 21-year-old daughter - their only child - before September 23, 2013 and must keep 500 feet away from her at all times.
The unusual case concerns Aubrey Ireland, a musical theater major who regularly fills lead roles at Cincinnati's prestigious College-Conservatory of Music and has made the Dean's List every quarter.
Despite this success, her parents often drove 600 miles from their home in Leawood, Kansas, to visit her unannounced and to accuse her of promiscuity, of using drugs and of having mental issues.
They even informed her head of department that she had mental problems and that they were considering going to court to force her to get treatment, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
What Does the International Space Station Sound Like?

12 Letters That Didn't Make the Alphabet
All of these sadly failed to make the cut - among them my favorite:
You’re probably familiar with this guy from old-fashioned Greek or Roman style text, especially the kind found in churches. It’s even still used stylistically in words today, like æther and æon.
What you may not know, however, is that at one time the ae grapheme (as it’s now known) was an honorary English letter back in the days of Old English. It still had the same pronunciation and everything, it was just considered to be part of the alphabet and called “æsc” or “ash” after the ash Futhark rune, for which it was used as a substitute when transcribing into Latin letters.

Loomis reminds me of a Psychology professor I had in Behavioral Psychology back in college.
What a self-satisfied prick. And a slob too, I'll bet.
Universities are full of people like thatl; above normal IQ, but socially backward and inept. Tends to think of themselves as superior, but has trouble functioning in the rest of society, and thinks that is because he is so much smarter than the rest of society, but really because he has retarded social skills.

I went to my favorit liquor store tonight to find everything was 40% off. It turns out that it is their last night in business. The owner is in his late 60's and can't take the tax hikes that are coming along with all of the regulatory crap. I've seen a few conservative bloggers arguing that he should not be fired, which perplexes me.
He's called for the death of a public figure, and the imprisonment of those that disagree with him.
Yet so many conservatives are so damn meek that even faced with an obvious case were we should be demanding a scalp, they demure.
This is a big part of the reason we lose. Most of our leadership has neither the will nor the ability to actually fight.

I read a lot of Clarke when I was young, and was always a little troubled by some of his morbid cynicism.
Later he moved to Ceylon (Sri Lanka now) and was fully revealed as a homosexual with a preference for young boys, which was tolerated in Sri Lanka. He even endured getting polio and being crippled to stay there.
While I still like some of his writings, Clarke is really not a healthy mind to evaluate. "Childhood's End" is one really depresssing book.
Asimov was at times funny and clever, but was also pretty full of his own bullshit. One of his bestest pals was Harlan Ellison. Harlan was also a clever writer at times, but really a bit of a sociopath.

But it is the left's dream isn't it? Everyone losing their individually to some collective that will "achieve great things".
Liberals are full of hate and evil, so they want to subsume the self to something that is not inherently vile. And now that they are materialists (more or less) and believe in nothing more then the physical the only way to achieve this dream is some sort of groupthink collective political action.

Some pretty good games today. Bowling Green/San Jose St. was good. I guess I'm glad the Spartans won. They had to fly all the way across the country and play in old rickety RFK stadium in DC in late December. The Duke/UCinc game was good until Duke remembered they are a basketball school. Hopefully UCLA/Baylor will be an entertaining shootout.

Robert Heinlein and Arthur Clarke actually worked in the same building for the US Navy during WWII and knew each other well. Also working in that building was Virginia, Robert's third (and last) wife. His "soul mate".
By all accounts, Virginia was a ginger and a real looker, too.
Heinlein was early on a "one worlder" who believed in World Government. He outgrew that eventually, and did, in fact, become something of a Libertarian (and he and Virginia were Methodists, too). "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is maybe his earliest reveal of what kind of Libertarian he was.
I think one of the telling things about Heinlein was that just about everyone who knew him thought he was a great guy. Philip Dick was a political opposite of Heinlein, but Heinlein befriended him, loaned him money when he was sick and had no income, and Philip Dick thought he was a prince of a guy.

An odd bit, this, where you have someone right where she wants you...almost...and you're not quite sure how you feel about that. You can either play it safe and retreat back into the shell she is dragging you out of...or you can risk total annihilation.
The down side to taking this risk is that occasionally you will be annihilated.
Totally worth it.

The NFL institutionally hates anyone who doesn't play their position in a cookie-cutter manner. It's hard to remember now, but Michael Vick was NFL Enemy #1 back when he first started simply because he could run very well, and they didn't do that in the sainted 1960s so it's obviously wrong.

Tammy, I've been feeling the same way. Christmas (Christmas!!) was like a chore for me, I wasn't feeling it. When I woke up the day after Christmas (otherwise known as "yesterday"), I had my usual chat with teh Big Guy and expressed my disbelief. And, I had a little epiphany. I thought, damn, there's been plague and pestilence and famine and horrific wars and who ever promised me that the age of innocence I grew up in would last forever? Nobody. There is nothing special about me or the rest of us. We're in for some dark days and there is absolutely nothing special about it. Just pull in and concentrate on what is close and good and realize that these are cycles that mankind goes through. We in the shit. We're not the first and we won't be the last. Will I live to see it get better? Probably not, but I can find plenty to be grateful for and I have resolved to narrow my field of vision and try to remain in that place of gratitude.
Yeah, I know, it sounds kinda stupid, but it was a real moment and I am going to try and roll with it.

Faster LBs will kill a scrambling QB. The only advantage that Tebow has is that he can run down a LB because he is so damned big and strong.
But the Jets will never use him, because Woody Johnson chose him without consulting Ryan and that idiot GM.

When an owner gets a player that the coach doesn't want, there is only 4 ways it will go:
1. Player sits on the bench, owner and fans get pissed, team doesn't win, coach gets fired.
2. Player plays, owner and fans are happy, team doesn't win, coach gets fired.
3. Player doesn't play, team wins, fans and owner are happy, but always wonder how much better it would have been with player. Rift between owner and coach starts, any struggle in the future gets the coach fired.
4. Player plays, team wins, fans and owner both estatic, coach gets fired because owner knows more.
This is why every coach wants input on player personnel. If they don't have what they need to win, they shouldn't be judged on their wins and losses. NFL teams can only dress 46 players for a game. The punter, kicker, QB, long snapper, backup QB, starting left tackle, are all set in stone, and most teams don't carry a 3rd QB on the 46 man roster because once you do that, you start having a hard time filling out a KO, KO return, punt and punt return teams. Once you realize that about 26 players are pretty much not going to play on those teams, you are left with 20 players. A 3rd QB to run the wildcat becomes a luxury that most teams don't want, so they would rather run the wildcat with a running back or wide receiver that can also play on all the special teams.

Girl, I have just been thinking that we simply cannot go on this way, bitching and crabbing and depressed and angry. It's bad for the body and bad for the soul. And if the view isn't going to change, then the perspective has to. I just can't do it anymore, it's too dispiriting.

It certainly did but Rex compounded it by not going away from Sanchez earlier.
If he did they might, might have made the playoffs and now the team is going to be blown apart.
Posted by: General Woundwort at December 27, 2012 10:30 PM (zOP5o)
Jets don't have any talent on offense. No O line, no receivers, no running backs. If Tebow was in, the team would be losing. When the Jets were succesful several years ago, Sanchez had good talent at RB and WR. Now? No one.

Another sorta end-of-the-road for a business story: on Wednesday my brother-in-law and his partner fired all of their employees but one and are moving their thirty-one year-old business to the basement of his partner's house. They wanted to wait until after the New Year, but their office lease ends on December 31st so they couldn't delay any longer. Needless to say, the employees knew the company was struggling and cuts might be made, but they did not expect a wholesale slaughter. The truth was, they couldn't afford employees anymore, so they will be going back to doing everything themselves. My BIL and his partner spent yesterday and today moving out and cramming extra office furniture wherever they could find space for it.
So another handful or so of people out of jobs and another half-empty office building.
It can't be said often enough: Thanks, Obama!

I have been trying to stay positive. It is the everyday little things - like letting the lady in back of me in the grocery store get ahead of me because she only has a few items compared to mine. Saying a silent prayer for some stranger I see that looks sad/depressed. Playing with my doggeh and kitteh. Giving a co-worker a sincere compliment. Hugging my kids everyday and making sure that I tell them I love them. Smiling at a veteran and thanking them for their service to our country.
These are some of the things keeping me sane and not totally depressed.

Christmas was good. Working on a few things, neither of them fun, because both had one foot in the grave. One is a resurrection of a 1960's Martin that for no explainable reason somebody band sawed the face off the headstock, took the fingerboard off, and ripped the neck out of the body like they were pulling weeds. Its brutal.
The other thing is a late 1800's parlor guitar. The bracing was original ,so the top was sinking in real bad. I had to rebrace the entire top with new bracing, fixed a bunch of top cracks, remove all the 3 stooges repairs that were done over the years, and I have to make a new back, because the knucklehead before me ruined it. Yeah another gem.
Other than that, just partying my ass off through the holidays.

The director of this food-bank came to give the laborers a little background. This is a prosperous country town of about 2500 (and was when my mother lived near there during the Great Bipolarity of the 1930's), and she's almost apologetic that they're only supporting about 150 families. She's hoping to get permission to use the lab room to give some food-prep guidance, because "all our younger ones" only want boxed food -- Hamburger Helper was her example -- and she can get raw foodstuffs easily but can't afford brand-name pre-made food to give away.
Now, in the day, the high school graduation rate in this town was 90+%. The farmers are aggressively progressive scientific operators, and the townspersons staffed a stone quarry, a glass plant, a nuclear power plant, a beryllium works, all those cute little shops and car dealers, and the army that beat the Wehrmacht, with their crappy li'l old small town HS diplomas. Nine out of ten people walking around in this town learned to do basic chemical processes involving heat and catalysts -- in this room.
This room, that, with permission from the State, will now be used to teach grown-ups already on the federal dole how to cook dinner without pouring it out of a box.
What. The. Hell.

Got MrsCaniac a new laptop for Christmas, and when I was looking at the laptops, Windows 8 was so aggravating to try to figure out. Since she is very anti-technology, I had to make sure that whatever I got was as close to Windows Xp (what her old laptop was running) as possible. Windows 7 is somewhat similar, so she is happy.
I really believe that Microsoft has royally fucked this up by trying to tailor all of their products now for Windows 8, Surface tablet, and Windows phone. But I am probably wrong because I saw some tech analyst that said that computers are the past and we are moving into a tablet future.

Hamburger Helper is horrible. I hope someone shows them how to make things like split pea soup and bean soup. And potato soup that you throw some cheese and left over ham into.
Saute onions and celery and carrots, add minced garlic, add staple item of choice, and cover with water or broth. Viola, you have every basic soup recipe you ever need.

I'm always annoyed by the assertion that today's youth are "tech-savvy", because they're not. They have toys but no idea for the most part how to use them fully, or how they work. They just know buttonology, but it's enough to feed their need for the new shiny.

Besides the fact that Alton Brown is going to slap you, using the chem lab for a cooking class is the best place to do it. You have all the necessary safety equipment, a space large enough to hold everyone and arranged to best teach the hands on portion. Plus, a least a couple of these knuckleheads will end up burning something.

Well sure, a chemistry lab is a good and practical place to cook food, but that's not its intended purpose, which is why it would be a great place in a disaster/armageddon scenario to make your dinner if you didn't have access to a kitchen for whatever reason.
Besides, who knows what's been on those countertops previously.

I'm thinking of Galvani and his frog's legs, here. Or Goodyear's stove.
It could be safer to cook in a lab than, for instance, to do chemistry experiments on top of what used to happen in kitchens. Or, "abbatoirs," as they were once known.
Yes, I got a pretty strong "Omega Man" vibe about the whole project. That, and the thought that any scout above First Class could probably teach the cooking course to the tragically ignorant.

If they're using a 220/240 type standard that doesn't have a notion of neutral, then polarization makes no sense.
A 3rd prong for a ground would be useful though...
The US 15/20A standard plug is kinda weak mechanically. Too easy for the hot/neutral prongs to get bent and the ground prongs bust off too easy. Too late now though.
The Brit plug is sturdier, and some incorporate device fusing within the plug cap itself.
The US electric code is probably the best and safest on the planet for residential stuff.

I sort of thought that way, but with the changes I saw 25 years ago in the radio industry, I am beginning to think in 10 years, tablets will be the norm.
20 years ago when I joined the local Multiple Listing Service, the lockbox key was unchanged from 20 years earlier when my dad was a member of the MLS. 10 years ago we switched to an electronic key that was updated over the phone. 7 years ago to an electronic key that was updated over the internet. This summer we changed to a "key" that is an Android phone app that communicates via bluetooth.
25 years ago, the radio station I was at had an IBM System 34 that was used for accounting and commercial scheduling/invoicing. Period. 20 years ago it was replaced by a desktop unit, that did all of that plus whatever else we needed a computer for. 15 years ago computers started being used for production. 13 years ago computers became to norm for music storage and for music playing. 10 years ago, radio stations pretty much became computer automated.
If my accounting software ever goes to a tablet form, I would happily dump my laptop for the tablet.

This is what I call the Marvel Universe effect. Marvel had long had the habit of taking different IP they owned and retroactively stuffing it together in a single history. DC Comics tried the approach of having multiple realities that could be accessed from each other. That way they could have their cake and eat it too by having a stable of characters who first appeared in the late 30's and WWII era, and also the modern versions that were introduced in the late 50s, such as Green Lantern and Flash. Then there were all of the Fawcett characters like Capt. Marvel who were long kept off in their own universe.
Heinlein did it with his books by introducing dimension hopping to allow characters from different timeline to meet. Once you introduce multiple universes in which somewhere any fiction ever conceived is real, all bets are off.
The best way to deal with the Foundation books is to only consider the ones that have Asimov's name alone on the cover as true entries in the series. Everything else was forced and calculated for money more than quality.
