Actually we already are and in fact the Federal Government is basically paid for by the top 5%.
And if more than few take their taxes elsewhere we are screwed e.g. France.
Well if you're the government you just take the money:
On April 15, 2011, a day that has been dubbed "Black Friday" in the poker community, the DOJ shut down the American operations of three major sites: PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Ultimate Bet....In January of this year, Full Tilt and the DOJ worked out an arrangement in which the DOJ took ownership of Full Tilt with the intention of selling it to raise funds to pay back American players. Seven months later, on July 31, PokerStars purchased Full Tilt from the DOJ. Businessweek estimated that the transaction would make $547 million for the U.S. government. At the time, the DOJ vowed to reimburse Full Tilt's U.S. players; Stars said that it would take responsibility for returning $184 million to non-American customers.
PokerStars followed through on its end of the deal and recently relaunched the Full Tilt site outside of the U.S.
And surprise, surprise the DOJ has returned exactly $0 of the US account holders' money.
According to Steven L. Kessler, an attorney based in New York City who specializes in forfeiture law."In one of its publications [the 'National Asset Forfeiture Strategic Plan 2008-2012'], the government talks about bringing in $2 billion in forfeitures and returning only $700 million." Recouping Full Tilt funds will be "a long, drawn-out process to the point that you will need to be out five or six or seven figures for it to be worth pursuing. The system is set up so that you are discouraged from going after your money..Plus, look at what you're exposing to get back what belongs to you. You have to wonder if it will turn into a tax case."
Celebrating New Years Dutch-Style
Apparently Carbidschieten (carbide shooting) is how the Netherlands ring in the new year.
Basically, a small chunk of calcium carbide and a little bit of water is placed in a metal milk churn. The carbide decomposes into acetylene and a flame is held up to a small hole in the milk churn. The resulting explosion sends the lid of the milk churn across a field and much fun is had by all.
The Next Gun Control Angle: Insurance
Megan McArdle discusses an idea making the rounds - requiring liability insurance to own firearms. I think she dismisses some of the concerns over this a little too easily but in the end she believes it would have a negligible effect on gun ownership. In terms of pure insurance I would agree since an NRA membership already gives you a certain amount of liability and theft coverage. Jazz Shaw seems to have completely missed the point that McArdle was estimating the effects of this policy if it were implemented.
The Journal News Doubles Down so their competitor, the Rockland County Times, Goes After Gannett Execs
Well since the Journal has seen fit to pierce the personal privacy of perfectly legal gun owners, I see why no reason why Journal News employees and Gannett executives shouldn't have their own privacy pierced. It's all available from public sources anyway so let them explain why their info is sacrosanct but private gun owners' is not.
DailyKOS: Hey Lets Have a War Against Gun Owners
And of you'll need a police-state apparatus to deal with all the NRA-criminals:
The very first thing we need is national registry. We need to know where the guns are, and who has them. Canada has a national firearms registry. We need to copy their model. We need a law demanding all firearms be registered to a national database. We need to know who has them and where they are. We need to make this as easy as possible for gun owners. The federal government provides the money and technical expertise, and the State police carry it out. Like a funded mandate..Now we get down to it. The registration period has passed. Now we have criminals without registered guns running around. Probably kooky types that "lost" them on a boat or something.
...I'm not so concerned with the guy who bought that bolt action Mauser a decade ago and doesn't have anything registered to his name. It's a pretty good possibility that he sold it, gave it away, or got rid of it somehow. And even if he didn't, that guy is not who I'm concerned with. I'm concerned that other guy who bought a half dozen assault weapons, registered two hunting rifles, and belongs to the NRA/GOA. He's the guy who warrants a raid.
Bob Owens Responds with What You'll See in the Rebellion
Let me explain, gun grabbers, how your confiscatory fantasy plays out. Let us imagine for a moment that a sweeping gun control bill similar to the one currently suggested is passed by the House and Senate, and signed into law by a contemptuous President. ...Tens of millions of Americans will refuse to comply with an order that is clearly a violation of the explicit intent of the Second Amendment. Among the most ardent opposing these measures will be military veterans, active duty servicemen, and local law enforcement officers....After a number of carefully-planned, highly-publicized, and successful raids by the government, one or more will invariably end "badly." Whether innocents are gunned down, a city block is burned to ash, or especially fierce resistance leads to a disastrously failed raid doesn't particularly matter. What matters is that when illusion of the government's invincibility and infallibility is broken, the hunters will become the hunted.
Unnamed citizens and federal agents will be the first to die, and they will die by the dozens and maybe hundreds, but famous politicians will soon join them in a spate of revenge killings, many of which will go unsolved.

You know, we should probably do some 2013 predictions, either today or tomorrow.
Here's one from 2012. Oooo -- so close:
Mitt Romney will be the GOP nominee, and Marco Rubio the nominee for vice president. The Romney-Rubio ticket will win handily, an outcome made very easy to predict on election night when Pennsylvania goes Republican by a wide margin.

@16
Have another, they're small:
The House GOP majority will expand by a few seats, but the Senate GOP will pick up Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Montana, and one additional “surprise” seat while losing none. Scott Brown will win handily in Massachusetts.

Why do I get the feeling that they aren't concerned so much with WHAT somebody has, as they are are with WHO has them? One thing I concluded with leftists a long time ago, is that they aren't really anti guns. They're just fine with armed communits, socialists, various ethnic gangs and what have you. BTW, the Liberals said the registry was just going to cost a few million and it ended up costing two billion. (There was probably money laundering going on for the Liberals through it too.)
Handguns have been registered since IIRC 1921. I don't know how up-to-date it's kept for things like private sales between individuals. And just like liberal American states, tougher licensing laws here don't stop crimes or multiple shootings... oddly enough.

Whether or not Congress passes some ridiculous national gun registry, most of the Federal Circuits would strike it down. It would clearly be in contravention of the understanding of the 2nd Amendment.
The real test would then be what the Supreme Court would decide. So the fate of freedom will once again hang in the balance of a 5-4 vote, and whether Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy stay healthy for another 4 years.
People here have mocked Kennedy in the past, but I really sense that he dislikes Obama on a deep personal level.

How did the rich benefit more from that?
Part of being wealthy has always been that you could have stuff like security because in the days before there was such a thing as police the wealthy still had guards.
It is the poorest who have benefited the most as they now casually expect stuff to be provided that was solely in the realm of the wealthy not that long ago in the span of history.
And there is one huge fallacy in your list of 'Government paid' stuff:
The government has no money except what it confiscates by force of arms from those who actually create wealth. Whenever you say 'government paid' you really mean 'paid for by the wealthy without any say in how it is used or wasted.'
I'd rather have an elementary school run by a group of wealthy people with an eye towards producing future employees. They wouldn't place actual skills below 'self-esteem' in their priorities. Their school would be required to educate in practical matters first and foremost. Some commie wants the teachers to organize and start teaching socialism? Fire them all.

The FBI has just over 10,000 field agents and a lot of those aren't kick in the door types. ATF can't even put 5k in the field.

I bought a Saiga 7.62 x 39 sporter model rifle on the cheap a few years back. I am not a gunsmith, but I wanted it to look like an AK (the Russian company that makes the AK makes the Saiga [same lower], but the version I have looked like generic EBR). The main thing to keep in mind is the number of parts you have to swap out for American parts if you want it to still be federally legal. There's a million checklists online that will help you do it. I bought the right number and type of American parts and brought them to a gunsmith, and he did it for me. I bought unfinished wooden furniture and stained it a pretty awesome Russian red and replaced the plastic crap. It now looks like a (semiautomatic) AK, which it essentially is, and it takes AK mags.
It was a thing of beauty until that tragic boating accident.

Actually this little tidbit of stupidity claimed that it wasn't a semi-auto because she owned one and it doesn't fire more than six rounds. I pointed out that six was the number of rounds she loads into the magazine, so six is the number of rounds it can fire before reloading is necessary.
All of this was prefaced by the comment that "nobody should be allowed to own a semi-auto."

And it takes time and effort and meticulous attention to detail.
And used brass is starting to run low as dumbasses have been selling it as scrap (worth more as used brass). Depending on the caliber you may get 5-20 tries out of it, if you don't lose any. The projectiles are still the expensive part.

Thanks, MDLotS. Yeah. I'm not concerned with the cost, just availability. Hubby has the equipment, and loves the attention to detail (helped out by a kick-ass scale) but brass is a concern. I guess we'll just do it until we can't anymore. I predict our re-loading stuff will be stolen soon, anyway.

I also doubt that many gun owners have the means to wage a rebellion. Houses will be taken and assets will be frozen. How and where will they live, even if they were willing to throw everything else away.
Maybe ten percent of a resistance will be shooters. The rest will be busy supplying ammunition, food, safe houses, explosives, etc. And even those shooters won't have to do it full time. A couple of guys who go to work every day, go to church, and once in a while they go out and blow up a cop car, kill a politician or bomb a government building.
The US is too big for the Federal Government to successfully control without a massive increase in forces, especially since many state and local governments will be divided. Local police may not actively side with the resistance, but will look the other way to activities, especially if the rebels don't do anything locally. The only way that the Feds will be able to exert influence is to massively increase their forces, either through conscription or through foreign military forces. Either solution would be a disaster for them.

The Founders weren't keen on throwing a war against the then most powerful nation on the planet back then. It took many years of building frustration and offenses. And a major portion of the European colonist population did not side with the rebels. The war that created this nation was fought and openly supported by a minority of those living here.
Taking up arms against the Crown was a far less palatable idea then than now. We've made uprisings against tyranny a cultural touchstone. It permeates out popular fiction. Look how often dealing with a problem is sold as a War On X.
How many government employees are going to be happy with knowing they've become the guys they were thrilled to see killed by the truck load in Star Wars? Or that their kids see them as such?

John Locke:
And thus the Community perpetually retains a Supream Power of saving themselves from the attempts and designs of any Body, even of their Legislators, whenever they shall be so foolish, or so wicked, as to lay and carry on designs against the Liberties and Properties of the Subject. For no Man, or Society of Men, having a Power to deliver up their Preservation, or consequently the means of it, to the Absolute Will and arbitrary Dominion of another; whenever any one shall go about to bring them into such a Slavish Condition, they will always have a right to preserve what they have not a Power to part with; and to rid themselves of those who invade this Fundamental, Sacred, and unalterable Law of Self-Preservation, for which they enter'd into Society. And thus the Community may be said in this respect to be always the Supream Power, but not as considered under any Form of Government, because this Power of the People can never take place till the Government be dissolved.
We'll see if this principle means anything in practice. Soon, I fear.
Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) at December 30, 2012 07:12 PM (q4+Rx)
Those gangs do not an army make. They're a tiny minority in their own communities as wolves need a large multiple of sheep to get by. It would not take much to collapse their organizations, such as they are, because they are accustomed to dealing with police forces that go to great lengths to take them alive and preserve their civil rights.
If a bunch of Bloods start staging confiscation raids under the guise of home invasions, those who fight back are not going to be concerned wth reading them their Miranda rights. And how well do you expect the average bunch of gangbangers, who produce a remarkably low body count for the number of shots fired in cities like Los Angeles, to stand up against anyone who is former military or LEO and keeps in practice?

The wrong is strong in your post. The alphabet agencies are not nearly numerous enough to take on the populace that would resist. There are less than a million badged, gun carrying law enforcment nationwide. And they are not nearly as well armed, nor as well motivated, as the people they would be facing. And welfare addicts are welfare addicts because they don't want to do the work. Do you really think they are going to risk their lives?
Many gun owners would turn in their guns. But a sizable fraction would not. And they outnumber all of the LEO, Active Duty, and Reserves by a large margin. On their own ground, with the ability to cut off the supply lines the .gov depends on.
There is a reason the liberals fear the gun owning populace. And it isn't because they own guns.
Its because they cannot beat them in a stand up fight. And that is why they constantly attack them, trying to wear them down to managable levels. It hasn't worked.

Okay, here's one. My step-son was visiting over the holidays. He broached the subject of Sandy Hook and had some vague notions that "gun control" might be a good thing to keep horrible events like that from happening. I walked him through the issue from my perspective, since he acknowledged he didn't really know much about guns or gun owners, etc. He seemed receptive to the discussion.
Then- this same compassionate soul declared that the mother of the shooter got exactly what she deserved! I asked him if he knew some facts that weren't publicly available because there are a lot of unknowns and mis-reported facts about her involvement. I couldn't refrain from saying, "So you would just summarily execute her without any discovery of facts?" He said, "No, I didn't say I would shoot her, I said she deserved to be shot." My response- "Oh, so you would have someone else summarily execute her on your behalf." That was pretty much the end of the conversation.

There are tens of millions of people that believe in the precepts put forth in the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. They may be currently outvoted at the ballot box by those Alexis DeTouquville warned us about in 1835, but they won't be outvoted from the rooftops.

Flip side of that is, how many in the ATF have children they are willing to sacrifice on the altar of their job, versus the right of the People to keep and bear arms.
Many of the men and women who fought for our independence were willing to put their children on the line, and did. Why should we be any different? How can we do any less? What is being proposed would disarm our children in the face of an ever more powerful government. Would you see them disarmed just when they need arms the most? Would you see them herded into camps? That is what happens to a disarmed populace. Time and time again; time immemorial.

What isn't being talked about is that the deal will also fund other ag subsidies, and especially the biggest spend in the bill, food stamps. The House had previously proposed a cut in food stamp spending of nearly 10%. The deal still has to be approved by both parts of Congress tomorrow which is not a certainty in the House.
But we know they will fold. They always do.
Related is this article about EBT fraud:
Earlier this year, an owner and a cashier at Glenwood Food Corp. in Canarsie, Brooklyn, were arrested for ringing up bogus transactions... A federal sting found the bodega was recording phony purchases on EBT cards, handing customers about 70 percent of the amount in cash — and pocketing the rest. Goods were rarely exchanged in the scam, which defrauded taxpayers out of $985,000 in two years...

Over..how? If the government is willing to burn children alive, and they have, why would you believe that the other side isn't willing to also. Or do you think the American Revolution was fought in neat lines along a well defined battlefield where everyone went back to their camps and had grog and song until it was time to fight again?
Both sides killed defenseless people, and yes, even babes in arms. Its war. Stuff happens. Or are you now marching on DC because our drone strikes have routinely killed children?
The moral high ground is nice to have if the media is on your side. But it isn't. It won't be.
But if you have the high ground on the battlefield... Well. Thats the place to be.

Its just that people want their cushy life and refuse to understand that there is true evil that will take it away. And they'll negotiate all the way until their blood runs in the gutter, astonished that it turned out that way. Astonished, even though history repeats, over and over and over again.
I saw a family of 4 just last week at the range. Cutest looking little blondie girls and mommie I ever did see. Requested a stool for the 10 year old so she could see over the counter on the lane. And there little Annie Oakley fired away on her 22 long rifle, hitting every target laid before her. Her little sister, all of age 7, stood behind in awed silence as big sissy fired down range. This family understands. They have empowered their little girls. I'll bet they're home schooled as well.
That is one way to approach whats coming. Another way is to tremble in fear, hoping to be eaten last.
Jenny's choice.

From what I gather, I could be wrong, but the subsidy doesn't expire. The calculation reverts to its original from 1949 and forces the price of delivering a gallon to be based on 1949 farming methods. In other words the Feds will subsidize milk at the cost of delivering the gallon by hand and will by law set the floor at that price. In 64 years these spineless shits couldn't update the original law to reflect farm modernization. Easier to pass a yearly fix and keep the dairy lobby's donations coming in. Why the hell are dairy farmers so special? The Chinese and chileans killed our apple farm by price gouging and no one in Washington even answered the phone.
Posted by: Exasperated Expat at December 31, 2012 12:18 AM (gkfSV)
The problem is -- like so many other problems -- the gov't screwed the pooch on the first iteration (New Deal), got bailed out by WWII rationing, then threw a bandaid on it in 1949, then passed a "temporary fix" in a farm bill, which "temporary fix" was extended by the "Bush Tax Cuts [and assorted congressional pork]". So now when the "temporary fix" is ended, things don't go back to a free market (which would work), but instead to the latest fix to the socialist garbage that was temporarily overridden by WWII.

Sorry, didn't see this earlier. Tough question. My child died at 3 months, so I'm not sure I'd like to see that happen at an older age either. Rips the heart out with a spoon, over and over and over again. Never ends.
Ruby Ridge happened in my "neighborhood" so to speak. The ATF was at fault, was rouge, and the Weaver family was literally ambushed by the federal government, shooting both Vicky and their son with sniper fire for a trumped up weapons charge trying to get them to turn evidence on the Neo Nazi compound at Hayden. Which, by the way, he had very little knowledge of.
At the age of 30? Perhaps I would relinquish, I'd be happy to surrender and hope they didn't beat my and my families brains out like they did in Cambodia.
At the age of 50? I'd hoped I'd educated my kids to the point where they could make a choice. Free? or Slave.
You make a good point. I would conclude that because of it, we will be disarmed come next November.

You need to learn more about the people who make up this administration. It isn't China or Cuba but it is a definitive step along the way. And there aren't that many steps once the government believes it enjoys an exclusive on coercive force.
Take a good long look at the people who raised and mentored Obama, and look at the miasma of murderous intent in which his beliefs were brewed. These are the hard core of the left that was pushing for a violent overthrow of the government throughout most of the 20th Century. Towards the latter half of the century they realized they could achieve their goals better by slowly infiltrating and replacing the government.
Leftist Hollywood has made HUAC to be the greatest home-grown villain of all time but rarely do they mention that many of those brought before Congress were in fact Communists and many in the pay of Moscow. (If Voldemort in the Harry Potter books was smarter he'd have spent decades subjecting the magic using community to books and movies decrying the terrible persecution of Death Eaters.)
Do you get annoyed at the prospect of being made to pay for other people's birth control? Well, Obama's science advisor, John Holdren, has gone much farther than that. He wrote a book advocated that the government forcibly administer birth control to the population at large and require licenses for having children.
There are now people in high office, in very high appointments, or just with access to those people, who once thought it acceptable to openly calculate how much of the US population would need to be killed outright to reach the state of government they thought preferable. Obama announced his first run for political office in the living room of such a person.
Look at the last 70 years and note all the incredibly bad policies that have become SOP for our government. All of this was push for by leftists playing a long game. Every time we give an inch they're already at work taking the next inch.
At some point you run out of space to retreat.

I'm not talking about dropping a bomb in a legit war and shit happens; I'm going from where you led---an ATF agent being forced to choose between his job and his child being "sacrificed on the alter of gun confiscation".
Maybe I'm nuts, but I do think that the right side is not near as willing to kill their innocent women-and-children countrymen as the wrong side.
Posted by: Jenny Tries Too Hard at December 31, 2012 12:21 AM (b+8h9)
Here is where you don't get it, ma'am. The ATF agent confiscating guns today guarantees your grandchild's enslavement. A disarmed populace has always ended up under the heel of totalitarianism. This has never been not true. So, you are willing to trade that ATF agents children's lives for your own grandchildren being shot in the back of the head at the edge of a ditch?
You live in the now. Its okay if we give up our guns now, because we don't have a totalitarian government. Yet. But you are willing to give up essential freedoms to make yourself feel better, and disregarding what will happen in the future. You are willing to gamble with their future in order to make yourself feel better.
Do I want that to happen to their kids? No. A million times, no. But if they make that choice, will it happen?
For my four current grandchildren, a million times yes. I will fight and die so they do not have to. I swore an oath to defend the US Constitution against ALL enemies, foreign and domestic.
Oh, and what is your definition of 'legit war'? Because I would be most inerested to know.

You know, Maet makes a good point when he puts on the brakes.
It is all to easy to launch on some "anonymous" Jenny person who may not share the same understanding of history that I might. You're people just like me.
My apologies if I was harsh in delivery of my opinions. We all love our kids. We all hope they have the same care-free upbringing we who were born in the 60's did.
I'm afraid your generation has much more difficult choices coming down the pike. We are all searching for the proper approach to the future, it is difficult, daunting and wrought with fear. Good luck.
That said, I've lived a good life. My future is not of this earth, so they can't really do much to me. I'll fight until then. Or so I hope. I could crumple in fear. I may shock myself and find myself to be a wicked coward. We'll see soon enough , I suppose.

I know we've brought this up before but some here tonight might not have seen it:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266425/
I cannot recommend this movie enough. It is such a perfect example of the nice neighbor who'd be OK with murdering millions to achieve his goals.
This movie dramatizes the events of the Wannsee Conference in which the Nazi's Final Solution was laid out for various government officials. The conference was supposed to be for the purpose of devising a solution but the gears were already in motion and the plan delivered as a fait accompli. A done deal.
A large portion of the details were unknown for decades as all copies of the official notes were ordered burned. One copy was mislaid or secretly kept and discovered many years later. This brought out details that shocked many historians. But the part that really makes it horrific is after the conference, when we watch Adolf Eichmann (Stanley Tucci) go home to his lovely wife and enjoy the remainder of a pleasant day bicycling with her.
I have no difficulty imagining a modern version of the Wannsee Conference with various Obama appointees in attendance.

Oh, and Jenny Tries Too Hard , you seem to think that only bona fide saints should be allowed to prevail in war. It doesn't work that way. War is hell. Ask any who have been there. Even the saints become sinners.
But they win. And you enjoy the freedoms they have spent their blood for. Virginal chiorboys weren't the ones on the front lines in any of our wars. Rough men, ready to do the business at hand, were the ones that did it. Again and again.
History isn't words in your history book. People died horrible deaths to make it.

A destructive failure doesn't take a lot of brains. The left has always been run by idiots who embrace schemes that are doomed to fail because they simply aren't suited to any group larger than an extend family or large tribe.
But that hasn't stopped them from murdering tens of millions while trying out their ideas and having the results ignored by later leftists.

But I still have faith in the thing that sets us apart from the rest of the world. I know we're all the same humans, but we Americans are the only ones who have enjoyed true liberty for our whole lives (until recently). For those of us my age and older, and some who are younger, this is embedded in our psyches, unlike any other people on the earth. I may be too optimistic, but I really do think there's a big difference. Like the great DP says: Liberty, In God We Trust, and E Pluribus Unum. No other country has had that, ever.

Holdren was the typical academic taking the wrong lesson from Plato's Republic. Nobody can say for sure if Plato was serious or making fun of his fellow philosophers who thought everything would be swell if there just granted absolute power, because after all they were the smarties who knew how everyone should live.
Holdren's vision is just Plato with early 70s technology woven into the narrative. Substitute climate change for overpopulation and you've got a quick update.

Well, if you want to bring God into it, I'll refer back to Genesis. There were two choices, Life and Knowledge. One meant an easy existence as an animal. The other meant awareness but having to overcome every difficulty by power of that awareness rather than expecting anyone to intervene on our behalf.
I'm not holding my breath waiting for divine intervention. The fact that I am capable of pondering the issue makes me responsible for my place in it. God may takes sides but there is little evidence of him taking action in recent centuries. That leaves this as a matter for humans to deal with for themselves.

Unfortunately, ma'am, you still think you can get your offspring out from under the Blitz, and they won't have to deal with the fallout. Because somehow you and yours are special. God does what He does, and not quite on your schedule.
But here is the thing. God has not shied from the killing of childern. At times he has demanded it.
But the reward has been free will. That has always been the goal. We determine our own Destiny. Our own Fate. That is the prize. And the price can be terrible. But it is always worth the cost.
Because we want our children to determine their own destiny. Not so that they should be bound by some desk jockeys' whim. Their own will.
Die for that? Why, yes. Yes I will.
Fight me for it? Try it, sweets.
I am skilled. And willing to die for it.
And you?

One of the aspects of the AIDS plight in Africa that casts doubt on the claim of how widespread the disease is, is that the population keeps growing. Some researchers have found it very difficult to make the numbers add up and conclude somebody is lying about either the mortality rate or the population level. One paper I saw suggested that if the deaths attributed to AIDS and wars were not greatly exaggerated, the average birth in Africa would need to be triplets to explain the continuing population growth.

Well, the precedent is now set. The Gov. CAN compel you to buy insurance. We know that much.
As conservatives we need to take advantage of this at the state level. Start compelling people to own guns, and impose taxes on anyone who doesn't and more taxes on anyone who doesn't maintain a concealed carry license. After all, if you aren't prepared to defend yourself, then you are freeloading off the rest of society who have to pay more for police to protect you.
The Second Amendment talks about a "well regulated militia"? Fine, then every male age 17-35 is now considered part of the state militia. Public schools are required to teach a year of weapons training, including use of a rifle, pistol and shotgun, as well as the basics of squad tactics. All men are required to attend a two month summer training session twice during their twenties.
Hell, require everyone to purchase "legal insurance" that pays the cost of an attorney if you are faced with a felony. That way the state doesn't have to pick up the cost of a public defender.
The list goes on and on...

Or it suggests that natural resistance is rising in sub-Saharan Africa....meaning that it can repeatedly arise there in non-affected populations and repeatedly devastate non-Africans in 1st-world countries.

There's a 30' x 30' overlook for that view at Castle Crags, with picnic tables and such. I'd bet that the web image and mine were shot within 25' of each other -- and, BTW, there's a far shot of Mount Shasta that's at about 120 degrees from this, over your right shoulder.
That's a pretty shot from Hawaii. The juxtaposition of the natural and man-made makes a nice hole for an anecdote to fall into.

Except it didn't and was never likely to do so. Widespread heterosexual AIDS is pretty much unknown outside Africa. The few places that do see it are mainly populated by the descendents of African slaves and may be largely attributable to IV drug use. This goes back to the theory that those descended from survivors of the Black Plague are more resistant and require overt behaviors to become infected, namely certain sexual practices, sharing of IV needles, and unmonitored blood transfusions.
Remember back in the 80s when mass outbreaks of AIDS among heterosexual non-junkies were due Real Soon Now? This was the ultimate ploy by fundraisers to get members of the low risk majority to care. A more rational suggestion would have been that solving the AIDS puzzle would also provide a great deal of improved understanding of things nearly everyone could benefit from having in the medical arsenal. But that wasn't as compelling as a looming threat to everyone rather than a tiny subset of the populace.
It took a unique combination of events for AIDS to become a problem in the developed world. The two big ones are air travel and gay rights activism. Neither was necessarily a problem on its own but the combination allowed very promiscuous gay men to visit places around the world and bring back their infections to share long before they got ill. The man long regarded as Patient Zero was a airline attendant who visited Africa several times for his job and was known to be very active sexually. He was probably not the first infected person in the US but the promiscuity in a society that newly allowed it is what theoretically did the trick of creating a critical mass of infections.

I suspect we're talking a bit past each other......I'm cognizant of the PR hype of AIDS and the facts, and how much each has been pitched to poor effect -- I do, after all, live just down the road from SF. But I'm also concerned that AIDS is a fairly mutable retrovirus and that evolutionary pressures can thus cause rapid differentiation. Similarly, with high human reproduction rates and low levels of survivors, human evolution can also move quite quickly.....all of which is present in Africa.
Posted by: cthulhu at December 30, 2012 10:54 PM (kaalw)
That is the charge leveled by those accusing the fundraisers of dishonesty. There are plenty of known diseases with similar profiles but are essentially unknown outside Africa. Which makes it very hard to get money from those in the developed world to work against those maladies.
So instead they invoke the old specter of widespread heterosexual AIDS and suggest it could burst out of Africa if we don't stop it there.

I'm not worried about it. For AIDs to become something genuinely scary to the majority of humans also requires it to become something that is self-limiting or harmless. From an evolutionary standpoint, the best way for HIV to achieve universal infection rates is to take the same path as many other viruses that nearly every human is host to: become highly communicable and essentially harmless.
How do you have high human reproduction rates and low levels of survivors unless the infection rate is very low? If not for the gay liberation movement, AIDS might still be known as GRID or still be so obscure as to not have a press friendly name. Preserved samples from patients who died of mystery conditions as far back as the 1950s have been found to be HIV infected.
It took a major societal shift to make AIDS a thing known to all. We know how to stop AIDS from spreading: Don't fuck strangers. Don't share needles. Don't perform blood sacrifices without gloves. Etc.

Yup, except for the fact that widespread AIDS did burst out of Africa onto an unwitting 1st-world transport system and rampage the globe.
I'm not big on whether it hits gays or straights -- there's folks I love and adore -- and hate and despise -- on either side. I don't react much to transmission -- sex (gay or straight or nouveau), transfusion, spit, whatever....but it's there.
Imagine how everyone felt about the Black Death after they got the lifecycle down with rats and fleas....*whew!*. Too bad it could go pneumonic and bypass all of that. HIV is dangerous, period.

I will state for you the fact that I was in FACT there in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 70's when AIDS made it's first showing. I will also state for the record that the BATH-HOUSES in San Francisco were the DE-FACTO GROUND ZERO SUPER INCUBATORS for AIDS and the then MAYOR MASCONE shut the bath-houses down because it was known that the gays were having up to 50+ per person sexual contacts PER NIGHT in said bath-houses.
I attest to this because I was in the medical field....the facts are in so much as the gay community wish to deny their history......FACTS!
I'm not a hater.......just wish the gay community would fess up to their history as they all know it to be true.

No, it didn't. The number of HIV infections in the US and similar countries was far less than the threat from other diseases. Once the blood supply was secured the real emergency was over. There would be no more Elizabeth Glasers infected by a transfusion and passing it on to her children during pregnancy, eventually killing all of them.
Once the blood transfusions became safe again, the chances of a heterosexual non-drug user becoming infected was exceedingly small.
Things like drug resistant tuberculosis are far more of a threat in that the chance of infection is far greater for the average person.
The Black Plague took out over a third of the European population. It created scenes we associate with apocalyptic movies where entire towns are completely deserted. AIDS at its worst was simply nothing like that level of threat. If it had just been needle sharing aka poor IV drug users it would never have become a big cause because it would have lacked a worthwhile celebrity body count and a highly affluent cadre of the Professionally Concerned to make it a big deal. There would have been a few heroin using rock stars succumbing but chances are most of them would OD and die of that before a disease was noted. (Who knows how many such might have been infected as it is?)
There are tons of nasty infectious agents out there and that is just the ones we know about. We can only estimate how many remain undiscovered.
You've likely read Richard Preston's books, The Hot Zone and Demon in the Freezer. If not, get them. They are great for inducing infectious disease paranoia and making you wonder how we ever made it this far. Ebola is an incredibly scary disease and we have no idea why a more virulent hasn't appeared and wiped out big swaths of humanity.
But I'm more concerned with those actively seeking to do me harm rather than the possibility of being felled by a natural occurrence. I can only do so much about the later by supporting research. Being concerned about the former is more a matter of personal responsibility.

At a guess, I'd apply the same rules as for condoms. Don't expect any material made from animal hide to be impermeable and prevent contact with skin or worse, breaks in the skin. Also, don't overestimate the size of your hands and end up with poor fitting gloves that fall off at a critical moment.
I've always been a bit put off by the very concept of sheepskin condoms. Seems like a gateway to bestiality. But then latex could be viewed as a gateway to RealDoll ownership.

And We Couldn't Be More Proud!
I'm hoping to check back in a year or two and see talk of maternity leave!

I'm thinking there are a lot of positive indicators here -- to start with, they're both nerds -- and she's willing to put up with him. That sounds like 80%+ right there.

I think I missed something somewhere.
No matter, I think it's awesome that Jefe has been, uh...itemized, for lack of a better term.

well, TV is okay, yeah
she is willing to put up with me, that is a big plus
but she has self esteem issues of her own that is for sure
we'll see

She's actually from Transylvania, and superficially resembles Velma from Scooby-doo.....though you can't take that last too far, 'cause she's not a secondary character in a cartoon, she's a real person. And she seems to enjoy the attention Chemjeff is throwing her way, and is responding enthusiastically.

Just okay? You've got a Transylvanian hottie succumbing to your personal chemistry, and things are just "okay"?

I have a 25...26...maybe 27 year old year old Quasar that my parents bought when I was a kid that has been in dire need of replacement for years. Despite all of its issues it still keeps going.
WAS planning on getting a Toshiba widescreen but...shit happens...
Huh? What were we talking about again?

I could see where this might be disconcerting, having long fought against the reverse issue......but it seems like a great starting point.

And, of course, another Groucho opportunity (from http://www.metafilter.com/67902/The-One-The-Only-Groucho-Marx):
"My favorite anecdote about Groucho is him relating his trouble with premature ejaculation to a close friend. His friend suggested Groucho use a desensitizing cream to help. Next time the friend saw Groucho, he asked him how the cream had worked. 'Terrible,' said Groucho. 'I came putting it on.'"
