Happy New Years Eve All!
Put on the hat, grab a party cup and come on inside.
Bob Owens stopped by a local gun store and found it picked over.
They didn't know when they'd be getting anything back in stock, from magazines to rifles to pistols. Manufacturers were running full-bore, but couldn't come close to keeping up with market demand. It wasn't just the AR-15s, the AK-pattern rifles, the M1As, and the FALs that were sold out. It really hit me when I realized that the World War-era M1 Garands , M1 carbines, and Enfield .303s were gone, along with every last shell. Ubiquitous Mosin-Nagants-of which every gun store always seems to have 10-20-were gone. So was their ammo. Only a dust free space marked their passing. I've never seen anything like it.
Every weapon of military utility designed within the past 100+ years was gone. This isn't a society stocking up on certain guns because they fear they may be banned. This is a society preparing for war.
Or maybe just preparing for the unknown which can include war and chaos.
Ammo supplies are down 90% from pre-election levels.
More Upper-class Hippie Terrorists
The privileged daughter of a prominent city doctor, and her boyfriend - a Harvard grad and Occupy Wall Street activist - have been busted for allegedly having a cache of weapons and a bombmaking explosive in their Greenwich Village apartment.Morgan Gliedman - who is nine-months pregnant - and her baby daddy, Aaron Greene, 31, also had instructions on making bombs, including a stack of papers with a cover sheet titled, "The Terrorist Encyclopedia,'' sources told The Post yesterday.
People who know Greene say his political views are "extreme," the sources said.
Video Games - Mostly Good For You?
The number of aliens you kill may directly contribute to an improvement in your brain. This may not sound like a typical scientific discovery, but it has come from some of the world's finest neuroscience laboratories. In fact, it is the genuine outcome of studies on how action video games can improve your attention, mental control and visual skills. We're talking here about fast-moving titles such as Halo, Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto, which demand quick reflexes and instant decision-making. They're often portrayed as the most trashy, vapid and empty-headed forms of digital entertainment, but it looks as if they may be particularly good at sharpening your mental skills
But what about the violence?
With regard to violence, violent video games have been found to cause small, reliable but temporary increases in aggressive thoughts and behaviour in the lab - as have other forms of violent media, including films and the news. Also How to Play Any NES or SNES Game with Friends in Your Web Browser
But in terms of real-world violence "delinquent peers, depression and an abusive family environment account for actual violent incidents, while exposure to media violence seems to have only a minor and usually insignificant effect."
Remembering Birger Stronsheim and the Heroes of Telemark
In 1943 he and three other Norwegians parachuted into occupied Norway on a mission to destroy Germany's Norsk Hydro heavy water plant. A previous team had been captured, tortured and killed by German troops.
"They didn't reckon that they would get out alive," Mr. Stromsheim's son, also named Birger, recalled in an interview for this obituary. "They weren't sure of that. They were scared in some ways, but there was no panic."Stormy conditions helped muffle the explosion inside the building, and the men made it safely back across the gorge before the Nazis realized what had happened. Nazis searched the area for days afterward, but no shots were fired and no one was hurt in the second mission. Many years later, experts determined that the Nazis were far from being able to build a nuclear weapon.
Mr. Stromsheim, who grew up skiing, hiking and bicycling, was among several soldiers who made it to safety by skiing more than 200 miles to Sweden.
He died last month in Oslo at the age of 101.
Try to make them sexy:
"I want my future husband to be diligent about money," a 27-year-old woman says in an ad being run in free magazines promoting a fixed-rate, three-year note that Japan started selling last week. "Playboys are no good." She's one of five women featured in the page, which says "Men who hold JGBs are popular with women!!"
The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla.
And my twitter thang.

To continue the gun theme, I offer this excerpt from ann Barnhardt's site:
People are emailing me desperately asking me to write something on the move to ban and confiscate weapons, particularly Diane Feinstein's bill. Sorry, but I don't waste my time on such stupidity. Nothing and no one can take away your right to defend yourself, your family and your property. If you STILL don't get that, then I really can't help you. They can pass whatever horseshit laws they want to, and my response, and the response of every thinking person should consist of two words: seven letters, three "f"s. If there is any lesson in the fact that you people know who I am in the first place and read everything I write, it is the fact that if you go on offense and bayonet charge these S.O.B.'s, they'll fold. Burn a koran, and GIVE THEM YOUR ADDRESS. Charge!
Remember, there is no such thing as coercion. The government CANNOT disarm you. Only YOU can disarm you by capitulating to them. Buy a flag with an AR-15 on it and fly it outside your house. Post pictures of yourself with your weapons on the internet. QUIT COWERING. The fact that you people cower is the one and only reason these assholes in D.C. have any power at all - you GIVE IT TO THEM.
Happy New Year, Horde!

It is interesting to observe how the government class tries to rule us.
They set up their penalties to have the maximal effect on members of the productive class - and this is a problem.
Are you a middle class father with a family to support? Wouldn't want anything to happen to that job would you if people found out you were a reichwinger?

I was trying to figure out a vertical feed a la Gatling gun, but the darn thing is a muzzle loader. It's also not very accurate. Maybe I need rifled spuds. For now it is better as a signal cannon than a weapon. But it's fun yelling "Fire in the hole!"

Well, we appear to be nearing a mini 'delay' deal of some sort. The agglomeration of headlines continues with Senate deals on and off, Biden proclaiming victory yet Senate Democrats are said not have consented (yet).
*WHITE HOUSE SAID TO REACH BUDGET DEAL WITH REPUBLICANS*SENATE FISCAL CLIFF VOTE POSSIBLE BY 10:30 P.M.: REID SPOKESMAN*SENATE DEMOCRATS SAID NOT TO HAVE CONSENTED TO DEALState of the idiocy appears to be: The 2-month sequester delay: cuts would come half from defense & half-non-defense. 2 month window to give all sides time for bigger deal. No debt ceiling resolution. Tax rises for 400/450k, Cap Gains/Dividend up to 20%, small rise in estate tax and restrictions on personal tax deductions. Simple - as we have said for a while - assuming this passes seamlessly, this is nothing but a can-kicking delay to the 'extraordinary' debt ceiling date - two words - Stop.Gap. And in two months, it's not just the sequester but the debt ceiling too. Enjoy your night.

I dunno what to do about this. It's her nose, not mine, but i have to look at it. it's HORRIBLE. Frankly, this is just a devastating cap to a fucking crushing year. I'd be less upset if she'd come home with "Thug Life" tattooed across her breasts. Now when I look at my wife, I don't see the beautiful woman I've loved for decades. I see the morning after a drunken night in Newark, looking down and desperately hoping that last week's penicillin shot is still hanging around.
And I'm stuck. There's nothing I can do. Number 1, as I said, it's not my nose. Number 2, if I ask her to take it out, I'm pretty sure that the throbbing infection that will inevitably take its place won't be an improvement. Finally, it's done, punctured, pierced. Her nose has a fucking hole in it. Nothing can change that. Seems my choices are either a stud or a scar.
Plus I'm the designated driver, so I can't even get drunk. What a brilliant fucking clusterfuck of an ending to a completely fucked year. Happy Damn New Year.

For the longest time, CZ 452's and "America" models had an accurate-looking hooded front, but it was soldered on and couldn't be changed out for a true globe sight without going back to the "factory." I considered the action to be match-grade, so their decision to limit their rifle to squirlz really puzzled me.

Well, played Monopoly with the fam and a friend of my son's tonight, and fortunately young Donald Trump (sore loser and ungracious winner) did not win (my younger son, a budding capitalist). I sabotaged him by trading with young Sigmund Freud (my older son).
My dog is nutz. I was out shoveling snow and moving wood to the front wood rack on the porch, and he was racing around with an apple in his mouth. My teenage sons made and anatomically correct "snowman" with two green apples as..... well , the male external genitals.
The dog thought the apple was a ball and wanted me to play catch with him. Eventually he bit it in half.

AR15: You can pick off prairie dogs at 300 meters all day long
AK47: You can pick off a deer pretty easy at 300 meters
Mosin-Nagant: You get out of your truck, see an elk on top of a hill, and realize you really can use iron sights that far.
AR15: You measure your misses by sub MOA measurements
AK47: You miss and, and aim a bit lower this time.
Mosin-Nagant: Even if you miss the shockwave of the bullet will kill the animal.
AR15: You are careful to keep in clean in the field.
AK47: You donÂ’t worry so much about some dirt getting in it.
Mosin-Nagant: It still has gritty grease inside it from when the Finnish army put it into storage.
AR15: Your bayonet will do an alright job of butchering your kill if needed.
AK47: The bayonet doubles as a decent hunting knife.
Mosin-Nagant: Your bayonet can be used to spit roast an entire pig.
AR15: Nice and light for carrying over obstructions.
AK47: Handy package for carrying over obstructions.
Mosin-Nagant: You can pole vault over obstructions.
AR15: CanÂ’t run dry or you get seizure.
AK47: Can run dry, but may cause laquered ammo to stick in chamber.
Mosin-Nagant: Just handling the bolt gives it enough oil to operate smoothly.
AR15: Melts IN the fire
AK47: Starts ON fire
Mosin-Nagant: Starts THE fire
AR15: With a custom barrel, Varmint Scope, and gunsmith trigger job, you can vaporize prairie dogs at 600 yards.
AK47: With a good rain, you can wait hidden in the mud at the side of a
watering hole and wait for the game to come to you for a shot within 10
yards.
Mosin-Nagant: With a solid shooting position, you can hit that deer on
the other side of the valleyÂ… and recover the bullet in the tree it was
standing in front of.
AR15: You can buy 100 round magazines that require dry-carbon lubricant.
AK47: You can do push-ups on your 30 round steel mag (Saw this in a SPETSNATZ documentary).

The "survival" part was the take-down space saving, making it fit in places like ejection seats or a boat compartment or a backpack. For home defense, this is not an issue, and a takedown doesn't make it for concealed carry. If you really need that function in a .22, go for the Marlin Papoose.
I reckon a lot of people will tell you that a .22 is not the gun for defense. I'll let them argue that out.

<blockquote>People are emailing me desperately asking me to write something on the move to ban and confiscate weapons, particularly Diane Feinstein's bill.

May I add something to Ann's quote:
I am reminded of a quote by Alexander Solzhenitsyn in his GULAG Archipelago that seems on point. It was about the greatest regret of those in the slave labor camps:
What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?
Part I The Prison Industry, Ch. 1 “Arrest” (p13, The Gulag Archipelago, Collins 1974)
That is a lesson to be learned.

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of meeting her and talking to her for a while. Noting that I am literally old enough to be her father and had no intent of getting a couple of drinks, or anything else, in her. The good Lady is a tiny thing, and yet is like a force of nature. She believes. And she is powerful strong. And yet she personally is surprisingly quiet and humble. If she took a liking to you, you would not forget it. And if she took a dislike to you .... y'all had better have your affairs in order.
Part of our conversation was for the time when the reason for the stocking up comes to pass. I was trying to convince her that she was valuable enough to be of more use in the rebuilding afterwards. She would have nothing to do with measures for her own protection. She does not have a microgram of compromise. If she should have to board Charon's Ferry, she will have one hell of a party of sideboys as an honor guard.
She wears the symbol of the Christian resistance to the French Revolution in the Vendee. The Revolutionary government anticipated the actions of Stalin, and tried to murder or starve all the Christians there. I see her as being ready to be a martyr if need be, but I also see the touch of St. Michael on her.

9mm are very marginal for stopping-power. They 'Over-Penetrate'.

Used to own one. It fired just fine, but I have a bum wrist that I broke twice and had to have surgically put back together, so it would ache after shooting a couple magazines. I ended up selling it to my dad. Currently I use my wife's CZ-75 P01 in 9mm, which doesn't seem to bother me, but I may end up getting a Walther P22 for target shooting.
Rifle-wise, I've got two Chicom Type 59s my grandfather brought back from Vietnam. One's too rusty to the point of being afraid to shoot it, but I'm considering having a gunsmith take a gander at the other one and maybe adding a modernized stock and magazine to it. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

As 2012 comes to a close and 2013 will open soon for America, remember to keep your own counsel, but don't take stock of your fears.
Yes, the future is going to really suck for a lot of people, and some of us alive now won't see the end of it. I hate to believe that the future is not going to be better than the past, because that is just not the American way.
But as a country, we have lost our way. Not everyone has lost their way, but we can't steer the boat for everybody, and the ones with their hands on the tiller now are determined to take it over the falls in hopes of wrecking it and rebuilding it their way.
The future is going to be a struggle, but the Sons of Liberty who made us a free country started out with much less, yet in the end won. Ir's not every man for himself yet, so try to find others around you that can be trusted, and be someone that others can trust in. I trust several of my neighbors (the former Marine across the street, the guy that works for AEP, and several others). Others, not so sure about because I think they are stealth Obamabots.
Ann Barnhart seems a little extreme at times, but yet she might turn out to be 100 per cent right (I hope not and that's not a knock on her). Anyone who has studied history and read about the collectivist movements of the last 100 years has plenty to worry about. It could get really bad, and literally millions of people who call themselves Americans WANT IT TO HAPPEN.
Be of good cheer, though. Keep your nerve, and know that this country will rise again, and have a new birth of Freedom. We have to believe that and just keep going.
New Year's Resolution: Be prepared, no matter what.

Around my parts, for decades it was easier to find a gun club than it was to find an instructor. Even now we get a lot of people who have taken a CCW course and nothing else, who join a club to get their real shooting education. If you have someone offering a basic course, pistol, rifle, or home defense, it's worth it. Speak the language, make a few friends, and they will be glad to let you shoot their guns until you find what you need.

Not sure they're not reading more into this than there really is...when I bought The Mister his Sig AR-10, the lady behind the counter told us that getting through to the phone number that she had to call for background checks was next to impossible. The sheer volume of phone calls they were receiving was making the wait time something like an hour. Fortunately, he and I both have carry permits, so we don't have to go through that every time we buy a gun.

I recall reading that at the time of the Revolution, one third of the country were pro-revolution, one third were Loyalists, and one third (the Honey Boo Boos of their day) were indifferent.
Maybe that's the way it always is - a minority of the people dragging the others with them, either for good (our Revolution) or evil (the Russian Revolution). And a sizable number of people who are simply dumb turds who can't see anything past their own noses.

Hey Jones in CO-
Your possum recipe on the other thread reminded me of a carp recipe my father used.
Take a large carp, nail it to a two-by-four, soak in a tub of brine for four hours. Prepare a bed of hot coals, preferably mesquite or hickory. Lay the board with the fish on top of the coals and cover with aluminum foil. Let simmer, or stew, for 60-90 minutes. Remove the board from the coals. Remove the fish from the board. Discard the carp. Eat the two-by-four.
Love ya dad! To EDS, God rest his soul 2003 and my mom JMS, God rest her soul 2012

Yes, the future is going to really suck for a lot of people, and some of us alive now won't see the end of it.
I'm hoping that includes Granny Piven, who doesn't live long enough to see the riots she's hoping for.

You're probably right, kbdabear, but it depends on what they were planning on targeting. A military base, like the Weather Underground? A GOP pol's home? A Christian church? Ah, yes, in that case, the NY Slimes will drool all over them.
The Times building (believe it or not, some lefties are so whacked out they think the Times is "right-wing")? A neighborhood filled with rich liberals? Well, now, that would be a very grave crime.

But, hey, THREE PERCENT with determination was enough to get it done, so we got that goin' for us, which is nice.

Maybe only 3 percent actually fought - but they had to get active assistance (food, shelter, funds) from others. So maybe that's where the one third figure comes from.

It'll be the person next door. A "cell" of one that avoids direct confrontation and contact and only does a couple of random acts of sabotage a year.
The most secure organization has only a single member who's plans will never be betrayed.
300M * 1/10th of 1% acting = 100k doing random acts of sabotage, or about 200k incidents/yr.
Even the smallest number of pissed off people, acting in small ways, very infrequently, would be draining.

That Mosin thing...is not spam, is absolute truth. I took my Mosin out hunting and didn't have to shoot it, I could stab the deer with the bayonet from my deerstand. Or at least I could have, if I had actually seen any deer. Of course I would have been shooting down towards the ground, so I had to bring climbing gear so I could climb down into the canyon that the bullet carved out to get the deer.
Maybe it is a good thing I didn't see any deer.

Gee, it's weird. I live in the city. I'm only a couple of blocks away from a row of bars and restaurants. I live near a college. And at midnight, I heard - NOTHING...no horns, or cheers at all. When the replacement refs muffed the call in the Packers-Seahawks game, I heard screaming all over the neighborhood. New Year's Eve - and there's not a peep?? Weird.
Perhaps all the trendy 20-somethings around here have suddenly realized they're screwed for life and have no reason to celebrate. Or maybe they're too stoned to cheer.

Any of you familiar with the Wise Company? They sell emergency food
provisions - stuff that will keep for 25 years (longer than MRE's - of
course they must be like 50% chemicals and preservatives, but heck, if I
need emergency meals in 20 years, I won't care). Seem reasonably priced
and the buckets they sell would be easier to store in an apartment than
boxes full of canned goods....

BTW - you'd think New Year's Eve, a time of celebration and hopeful expectation would be the one night black folk would stop bitchin' about the White Man keeping them down.
Nope:
For many African American Christians, New Year’s Eve is a time to gather in “Watch Night” services commemorating their ancestors’ vigil150 years ago over whether President Lincoln would sign the Emancipation Proclamation. Because Lincoln did sign it on Jan. 1, 1863, declaring all slaves in confederate states “forever free,” the evening became a time of prayer, song, dance and celebration, Whitlock said.
“For us, it’s about the birth of freedom in 1863,” said Rev. Whitlock, pastor of Christ Our Redeemer Church, an African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Irvine. “And in 2013, we shall seek freedom from oppression and inner conflicts.”
Putting a modern twist on the freedom message, congregants will share stories of their liberation this year from alcoholism, drug abuse, poverty, poor health and other crippling conditions, Whitlock said.

However, not all slave states were in the Confederacy. Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri were Union states which still legally sanctioned slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation exempted those four states to keep them in the Union, and anyone who can read a map would know why it was vital that they did not defect.
The Emancipation Proclamation sure sounded moral and just, with lofty goals, but it didn't free any slaves.

And in a bizarre convolution of reality, they'll be worshiping BHO, who has more in common with Indonesians and Muslims than he does with them -- while ignoring the fact that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, Martin Luther King was a Republican, the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 was filibustered by 18 Democrats (and one Republican), the KKK was run by Democrats and the longest running Senator of the United States was a Democrat who once was Grand Kleegle in the KKK. But Republicans -- who support candidates like Allen West and Herman Cain -- are tagged by the MSM as "racist", while Dems who say that darker-hued individuals can't make it in the world without government assistance are deemed "caring".

Hey, how about a few New Year's resolutions?:
My New Year's Resolutions
Michael Moore - Oscar and Emmy-winning director
4. Stop saying, "I support the troops." I don't. I used to. I understand why so many enlisted after 9/11. Sadly, many of them were then trapped and sent off to invade Iraq. I felt for all of them. I understood those who joined because of a lousy economy. But at some point all individuals must answer for their actions, and now that we know our military leaders do things that have nothing to do with defending our lives, why would anyone sign up for this rogue organization?

Some bags of red winter wheat seed, stored in sealed plastic buckets is a good idea too.

New Year's prediction:
Hillary's miraculous recovery will be complete, AFTER a new Secretary of State is confirmed. Actual facts related to her purported medical treatment will be buried deeper than Webb Hubbell's prison diary. A new media-imposed prequalification for the 2016 election campaign narrative will emerge, i.e., having survived a "life-threatening" medical condition. In four years nobody will remember Benghazi, but they'll know that Hill was a hero when it counted.

On our trip to Saint Petersburg, Russia, our hotel had a breakfast buffet that included porridge. It wasn't just grains in water, there was like a stick of butter involved.....wasn't half bad, actually.
In St. P, it's important to stock up on breakfast because of the weird body effects. You'll visit a museum for some hours and come out not knowing what time it is -- and the sun will say "it's 2-ish in the afternoon" (when it's really 5:30).....but it lies. There can be 20+ hours of sunlight, and it could be almost dinnertime, but your body will try to put it off because of the time it's reading from the sun.

The thought of something so dishonorable never occurred to them.

Ookami is a very athletic girl who is part of a student club that runs a sort of bank. The capital is personal troubles. To get a loan of assistance with your problems you take a debt that can be expunged by helping somebody else for the bank. This gives Ookami many opportunities to beat the crap out of thugs with her boxing gloves that leaves smiling kitty patterns embossed on her victim's faces.
Like many highly athletic women, Ookami has a very, shall we say, slender build, and the narrator takes every opportunity to point this out. Which in turn reveals that Ookami can hear the narrator and would beat her senseless given the chance. Her closest friend is the same age but looks like a child and thus is also lacking in certain characteristics. In one bath house scene the narrator apologizes for the resulting inadequacy of the fan service and incurs the ire of both girls.
Very silly.

925Moronic scrunt in Time deeply concerned about the lack of strong female characters in The Hobbit, and in Tolkien's writings generally.
..........
There were several 'strong female characters' in Tolkein's writings.
But The Hobbit, as Ace mentioned in his review...is a lark, and as such is meant to be viewed separately from the other stories.
Were the film makers supposed to rewrite the basic story line to include characters that didn't exist in the original?
Oh wait.
In the interest of modern PC bullshit, I guess the answer to that is...'yes'.

Unless they keep to generalizations like...."Obama is a liar and a demagogue"...which is true every day of the week.

I want to toss this out...is there anyone right now, or have anyone close to them, that is being treated for a serious medical condition. I'd like to ear some feedback
The reason I'm asking is that I just spent a few days in the hospital and will have to go through some pretty serious surgery and I am being exposed to what is happening in the health care world ..and it ain't fucking pretty.
I have had issues with being able to get time with various specialists. It's the holiday season and many of the docs are off...but they did not go anywhere. I found out there all in the processes of moving their offices..and preparing for the changes of their practices having been bought out just prior to the new year and all the OgabeCare rules being implemented.
Many of them are being frank with me and saying that OgabeCare is really fucking everything up.
There will be few private practices in the future. Instead there will be a few corporate healthcare delivery entities that will be easier to control.

Yeah it is, Albie...from what my general practitioner doc tells me.
I'm lucky though, so far, and don't have a medical condition other than alergies.
But he's said that a lot of his other doctor friends are contemplating just ending their practices.
He's got his own private clinic though.
But I've noticed he's added some other doctors and near-doctors to his roster...and it's getting harder to get a same-day appointment when I call for one.

The problem with digital record keeping for doctors is the HIPAA laws are an impenetrable nightmare. I don't know of a single convalescent hospital of the dozens I've done IT work for that could pass an audit.
Dentists have it a bit easier if only because one company is the 800 pound gorilla of dental practice management packages. Being certified to support Dentrix is very lucrative. We looked into it after doing work for several practices. You have to spend several weeks attending classes at their HQ near Salt Lake City, UT. But first you have to get the approval of the guy who controls sales in your region and then pay about two grand for the privilege. We got the impression that som incumbent would have to die or retire before we'd be given consideration.
Posted by: epobirs at January 01, 2013 03:57 AM (kcfmt)
Hospital is working furiously to establish outpatient care for recovering patients so they won't have to be readmitted. (Government will penalize or not pay for patients readmitted with same condition.)
Surgical staff is overworked. Hard to get days off, schedule changes, etc. As nurses retire they are being replaced with some techs due to lower pay rate.
My doctors (BP and ortho) have joined their practices to large corporations. The offices are very large and you are run through like cattle, often not seeing a doc but a nurse practitioner or medical assistant.
It's going to get worse, so I would recommend getting whatever you need done as soon as possible. I think things are pretty much the same all over the country.

1. It makes Obamacare look bad
2. Probably some of the corporations are owned by dems
3. Many in the news media (in fact most, I would say) do not understand the medical professions in any way.
Probably when doctors are all in corporations (due to trying to keep practicing without going bankrupt) the press will suddenly develop an interest in "corporate medicine" and demonize them.

Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. The little pups got me up, so I dashed off a post for the headline thread. Except there is no headline thread. Which I should have figured. So here it is as a late addition to the overnight thread:
Today, for many, is a day to cradle your throbbing head and moan, “never again!” So here are a couple of drinking stories to go with your asparagus, Bloody Mary, ibuprofen or whatever helps get rid of that hangover:
After Camelot, Richard Harris’s film career was at its peak. So was his drinking. During an interview, he boasted that whenever he was in New York, he would make his way to a particular bar; if Vinny, the regular barman, was on shift when Harris walked in, he would make the star six double vodkas. The interviewer was unimpressed, and called it a “bullshit story.”
Harris’ face turned red with rage. “Right, then, let’s go,” he ordered. The two got into a taxi and drove to Third Avenue and the bar in question (whose name, sadly, I don’t know). As soon as Harris walked through the door, he caught the barman’s eye: “Vinny, my usual.” By the time the two sat down, six double vodkas were lined up on the bar.
Another legendary drinker – to the in-crowd of Hollywood – was Dr. Harry Wilson Martin, the husband of gossip columnist Louella Parsons. His specialty was venereal disease, and he served as the head of Twentieth Century-Fox’s medical department. Because of his position, Louella had private lines to a number of medical labs, particularly the ones who confirmed or denied pregnancies; very often, she knew an actress was pregnant before the girl herself knew.
Both “Lolly” and “Docky” threw down the booze at any opportunity. At one party, Martin drank so much he passed out on the floor and lay there in a drunken stupor while other guests stepped over him. When the host tried to help the stricken medico to his feet, Parsons slurred, “Let Docky alone. He has to operate in the morning.”
And then there’s the story of screenwriter Joseph Mankiewicz, who, loaded to the gills at a dinner party, did a Poppy Bush. “It’s all right,” he stuttered to the shocked hostess, “the white wine came up with the fish.”
And so here we go into 2013. Thanks for letting me tell a few stories and thanks for the knowledge and entertainment you all provide. It seems as though AoS is becoming the only sane place on the web. Long life and a happy year to you all.
