When you drive in Russia literally anything can happen - and does. If you watch the full 13 minutes of this video you'll see that the Russian driver has to be prepared for sheep, drunks, tires, trees, elks, front loaders, gun fights, power lines, helicopters, and even jet planes at any moment.
I haven't seen this many cars entertainingly crashed since the Blues Brothers. And yes wanton destruction makes me all tingly and happy inside.
And if you're wondering why there are so many Russian drivers with dash-board cams, the answer is simple: insurance claims.
Dash-cam footage is the only real way to substantiate your claims in the court of law. Forget witnesses. Hit and runs are very common and insurance companies notoriously specialize in denying claims. Two-way insurance coverage is very expensive and almost completely unavailable for vehicles over ten years old-the drivers can only get basic liability. Get into a minor or major accident and expect the other party to lie to the police or better yet, flee after rear-ending you. Since your insurance won't pay unless the offender is found and sued, you'll see dash-cam videos of post hit and run pursuits for plate numbers.
Hillary Clinton: Israel Lacks Empathy towards the "Oppressed" Palestinians and The Limits of Empathy
Hillary on Israelis last week:
So, look, I'm not making excuses for the missed opportunities of the Israelis, or the lack of generosity, the lack of empathy that I think goes hand-in-hand with the suspicion. So, yes, there is more that the Israelis need to do to really demonstrate that they do understand the pain of an oppressed people in their minds, and they want to figure out, within the bounds of security and a Jewish democratic state, what can be accomplished.
But Evelyn Gordon of Commentary points out that it's often the critics of Israel who actually lack empathy:
I, too, think Israel's overseas supporters-on both sides of the political spectrum-ought to accord more respect to Israelis' democratic decisions than they sometimes do. But this isn't only because, as he rightly said, Israelis are the ones who ultimately bear the consequences of those decisions. It's because in making those decisions, Israelis often have knowledge that even the most supportive and best-informed non-Israelis lack....Many Westerners, because they have been raised on the value of empathy and genuinely try to practice it, truly believe they have succeeded; as an Israeli, I can't count how many times I've been told, "I understand, I really do." But the only honest answer is, "No, you don't."
If you've never lain awake night after night, unable to sleep, because you're tensely awaiting the siren that tells you a rocket has been launched and you have only seconds to take shelter, you do not understand the physical, mental and emotional devastation of living under constant rocket fire-even if (thanks in part to such precautions) it mercifully causes few casualties. If you've never woken up, morning after morning, dreading the moment when you have to turn on the radio and hear how many people have been killed overnight, all while praying nobody you know will be on the list, you don't how emotionally devastating a suicide bombing campaign can be even to those whose loved ones are mercifully spared. If you've never paid a shiva (condolence) call on a family that has been shattered by the loss of their bright, beautiful daughter in a terror attack, or of their soldier son in combat, you don't know what it's like to live constantly in the shadow of terror and war.
Reasonable people can obviously draw different conclusions from this knowledge...but whatever decision an Israeli reaches on these issues, he or she has made it with a bone-deep understanding of the price they will pay if the choice goes sour.
Meet Magic Wand, Iron Dome's Big Brother
The IDF is in the final stages of laying the groundwork to deploy the "Magic Wand" missile defense system in central Israel. The move to deploy the system comes on the heels of Israel's deployment of the Iron Dome missile defense system in the south, which has provided efficient, but limited protection from rockets fired by terrorists operating in Hamas-run Gaza into southern Israel.
If it works as advertised, Magic Wand will be able to operate in inclement weather and will fire intercepting missiles capable of changing course mid-flight. Whereas Iron Dome is intended to intercept short range rockets, Magic Wand is designed to intercept long-range missiles fired from Gaza and Lebanon.
The Iron Dome and Magic Wand are two of the three systems Israel is developing and deploying as part of its multilayered missile and rocket defense apparatus. A third system - "Arrow 3? - is designed to thwart ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere, which could potentially carry nuclear warheads.
But remember kids missile defense can never ever EVER work. Because Top Scientists say so.
For just $1275 this can be yours.

Is Watching a First-Run Movie From Your Couch Worth $500?
Well plus $35K in equipment:
We first brought word of Prima's audacious plans to let movie buffs enjoy first-run titles from the comfort of their home theaters for $500 a flick back in 2010. But it looks like the company is finally rolling out the service, with a hardware price tag that's risen from $20,000 to $35,000.
... And for just half a grand it will download a 1080P copy of a film the same day it's released in theaters across the country, with better image quality, sound, and color than a Blu-ray copy.

When Deranged Homeowners And Youthful Criminals Collide
There really aren't any winners.
Smith was sitting in his basement when he heard footsteps around his house leading him to believe someone was attempting to get inside. Smith heard a window break in the upstairs of his residence and then footsteps walking down the hall. Smith said he shot Schaeffel as he was descending the basement stairs, then fired again into the teen's face as he lay on the floor looking at him. Smith was quoted in the complaint as telling an investigator, "I want him dead."Smith told investigators that he put Nicholas Brady Schaeffel's body on a tarp and dragged the body into his basement workshop before returning to his chair.
A few minutes later, Smith said he once again heard footsteps on the main floor of his home and then saw Haile Kifer descending his basement stairs. Smith waited until Kifer was halfway down the steps and then shot her. He said Kifer tumbled down the steps to the basement floor. Smith attempted to fire another shot at Kifer, however his mini 14 rifle jammed and he was unable to. Smith told investigators that Kifer laughed at him and acknowledged that her laughter upset him.
"If you're trying to shoot somebody and they laugh at you, you go again," Smith said in the complaint.
Smith then pulled a .22 caliber revolver he was carrying and shot Kifer several times in the chest. [...]
Smith said he then dragged Kifer's body into the office workshop and placed her body next to Schaeffel. Smith said that Kifer was still gasping for air so he shot her under the chin in what he described as "a good, clean finishing shot.

That's from World War I, when doughboys called lice cooties and transmitted them by touch.

Woman goes to her doc for advice. Tells him hubby has developed a penchant for anal sex.
Doc asks if she enjoys it. "Actually, yes, I do." Asks her if it hurts. "No, I rather like it."
Doc says, in that case, there's no reason you should not continue to practice anal sex, just be careful not to get pregnant.
The woman was mystified, "You can get pregnant from anal sex?"
Doc says, sure, where do you think people like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi come from?

I've been saying exactly THIS to my liberal friends for years -- I use high-def TVs as the example, and the ones who don't have their heads up their asses willingly get it. I had one hardcore lib actually realize trickle-down economics works (albeit not over 1 or 2 election cycles) and then he essentially said it fucked with his worldview so he wouldn't accept it. Rich people are the beta testers of the e-world. Get a fucking clue people.

I never saw Avatar. The ads made my toes curl in a sort of involuntary smarm-cringe.
The last time I went to a theater was in 2002, when I saw Signs, which I hated.
Since I write all day, it's hard to read for fun, so I'm building up a DVD collection. I tend to want to see good movies over and over, so I prefer owning copies. Most of my films are old, but there are quite a few new ones.
Since Hollywood makes all its money in the Third Word anyway, we can't starve the beast, so you may as well watch what you want to watch.

Cellphones are like this. 20 years ago when I got mine, it cost $150 and my plan was 30 minutes per month for $45. Long distance not included, and the phone fit into a lunchbox sized case.
Fast forward 20 years, I pay $45 a month for 900 minutes, , long distance included, voicemail, caller ID, and my phone fits into my pants pocket. And I paid $1 for the phone.

Hermano! For a while, saying in public that you hadn't seen it and had no plans to see it was like saying you didn't think we'd ever landed on the moon. People were left speechless and often got hostile.
Last night I watched my copy of The Big Clock, with Ray Milland and Charles Laughton. It's the movie that was the basis for No Way Out, with Kevin Costner. Both are great films, but the older movie is actually much more shocking.
If you've never seen Heartbreakers, you should check it out. It's easy to forget how supernaturally hot Jennifer Love Hewitt was at thirty, her perfect age.

What do you tip a bartender when he (or she) doesn't charge you for a drink?
For instance: tonight my wife and I had dinner at the bar of a nice local restaurant. We had seven drinks (wine and cocktails. Fuck you, I like to drink. Got a problem with that?). They charged us for three. Yes, we tip well and consider the bartenders as part of our social circle at this restaurant.

You should tip on what the total should have been or be a minch and tip the difference between the bill and the total if it is more.
It's called the buy-back and it's device used to attract regulars. It's also a way for bartenders to steal. Smart bars allow it but they keep an eye on it.

The girl picked to play Mary had larynxgitis so bad she couldn't even whisper. Mary's Angel had bronchitis. I had originally been Joseph's Angel, whose only role was to sing one solo. Guess what?
So, there I was, wearing a costume I can only describe as a knee-length handkerchief (and the sanctuary was freezing), pinned into wings, singing not only my small solo in "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night" but Mary's "Away in a Manger" and Mary's Angel's "What Child is This?", but I also got the job of coraling the little angels (with an assist from the hastily recruited Joseph's Angel who'd never done a Christmas pageant in her life), the little shepherds, and then the stage-director's job of elbow-waggling and stern looks to get the shepherds to make a hole for the Three Kings.
I was absolutely certain I'd made a horrible mess of the whole thing. I still don't know if it was good, bad or indifferent singing, all I remember is every other junior high girl ripping me to shreds.
I never did another thing on a stage, and I never will.

Yeah, but I can't control who I'm attracted to. Just not attracted to the youngsters. Now that I know Hewitt was only 21 in Heartbreakers, it changes how I see her.
When I was thirty-seven, I went to San Francisco to visit a friend. She wasn't home when I arrived, but her housemate let me in, and we sat and talked. She was about thirty and gorgeous. Looked just like Audrey Hepburn but with bright blue eyes. Since my pal didn't come home until the next day, I sat and talked with this woman all night. By the next day I was totally in love with her.
My friend then told me that Audrey was only eighteen. That changed everything. She was just too young for me. I thought of her as my little sister after that.
I found out later she was hot for me, but I wouldn't have been able to do anything about it. I liked her when she was thirty, not eighteen.

Although, I do kind of get this, at least in the mental sense. I find women's mental capacity for abstract thought and common sense greatly improved over 30, whereas under 30 their very tone of voice is as grating as a cat shrieking as a result of being trapped in the washing machine.
I denounce myself for my sexist remarks. I shall now say five Hail Vaginas and buy some poor women's studies major a few birth control pills.

If you put it on your credit card, your waiter is taxed on every penny of it, barring what he tips out the bus-boy, the hostess and the cook. And they're taxed on their (known) take, too.
Waiters are taxed at 10% anyway - that's the "tips" box on your W-2.
This is the summary version of the lesson I was given by a professional waiter, years ago.

No they can't since this is where the bar makes up for its loss leaders. McDonalds and Wendys do not make money on their hamburgers, they actually lose money on them. How they recoup those costs are from drinks and fries. If they gave out free fries and drinks to everyone, they close down.

A friend of mine was a minor reality TV personality for a few weeks in the late '90s. Being a young and sexy dude who was on TV, JLH hunted him down and boned him. Once. I understand that that was (and to a degree remains) her hobby. A lot of actresses get sent to dudes, but apparently she finds 'em.
Which is fine. But it's unusual. And it wouldn't give her the Marilyn-style "underbelly" eyes.
Quasi-disclaimer: I was never sure I believed dude's story--it was borderline preposterous, except that he was a sexy guy on TV--until I found out, years later, that his then implausible-seeming description of her ass was forensically accurate. I'm still not 100% on it, but the circumstantial case is... Yeah. She's friendly.

Posted by: yankeefifth at December 06, 2012 11:55 PM (Z9EHQ)
If you buy the bottle of booze, then you can give out drinks for free. If the owner says to give out the drinks for free, then it is not stealing. Deciding on your own that the bar makes too much money from that bottle and that you deserve some of it is no different than the hobo running into the bar and stealing the bottle.
How does the owner profit on employees giving out free drinks? I know that people think that if you keep giving out freebies that you will gain customers and keep them happy. It really doesn't work like that. Those customers get accustomed to receiving the free shit, and demand the free shit more and more. By giving the customers free shit, you have effectively set the price of that product to that customer at $0.00. If he doesn't keep getting it at that price, he gets pissed and leaves. Or he keeps voting for Obama.

I have done so, and will continue to, when I know it's justified. (OOoops! I guess I am being holier than thou!) I just wanted to make clear that, sticking it to the owner of the establishment, so that the bartender and you can do well, is not really very ethical. The fact that bars are a high-margin business has nothing to do with it. If I don't want to pay the margin I can always drink at home.
It's an interesting economic case study. I disagree that the assumed cost is $0.00, because the regular who is getting comped is also buying other products. And the bottom line doesn't care what is purchased, as long as it is at a sufficient margin to make a profit.

I was raised a Catholic and went to Catechism until I was a senior in high school, so I knew all about the Roman Ritual. It was pretty well known--at least where I went to church--that exorcisms were incredibly dangerous for priests.
It isn't just you; the parallels you mention are real, too. Both radical leftists and demons thrive on power, and you have to surrender your individuality to them.
"My name is Legion," said the demon to Christ, "for we are many."
It's all about collectivism. I've always hated and feared groupthink, because it comes way too close to demonic possession. It's not a coincidence that the most collectivist societies are the most amoral.

Doesn't matter what the liquor cost is. That 80 cents of liquor is going to pay the rent, the kitchen staff's salary, the electricity, upkeep, etc. The hamburgers and chicken tenders don't pay that. The food is what gets the people to drink more, not the freebies. Thus the food doesn't have much of a profit margin built in. If restaruants thought giving out free drinks increased their profits, they would do what they do for tea and soft drinks, just give everyone free refills for a set price.

Hey remember when the expansions for those were supposed to come in something like 18 month increments? Wings of Liberty was released in July 2010. So we should have seen Heart of the Swarm in the beginning of this year. So its about a year late, and currently its got a planned release of March 2013. I fully expect that to get pushed back, and see this game as the big reason Blizzard cancelled their convention this year. Hey maybe part 3 will get released before 2020 at this rate. Note I said maybe.

Good point.
But...the economics of restaurants is complicated, and in a place like I was discussing the drink margin is huge...much bigger than the food margin. So they can afford to comp drinks, on the assumption that the volume will cover the loss on the freebies.
And that is not an excuse to cheat the restaurant. I strive to pay what I owe. but at what point am I absolved of responsibility? Should I chat with the owner about his bartenders' practices? Is that my responsibility?

That's sort of like MacArthur saying. "Old soldiers never die. They just fade away."
It's a great line that makes no sense whatsoever.
In Catechism class a nun told us about a Catholic Saint who was decapitated and picked up his own head kissed it. Everyone just looked at each other, thinking, "With what?"

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at December 07, 2012 12:17 AM (GsoHv)
But the food isn't sold at a profit, and in some cases at a loss. The drinks are how the bar or restaurant makes a profit. It is not the bartenders' call on giving out free drinks, it is the owner's. It doesn't matter if it is Joe's Bar or Applebee's. The margins are the same, the only difference is the volume.
As for the price being set, if you go to a bar where you get comped on the 4th drink, after a while, you start pushing for every 3rd drink. Soon it is every other drink, and finally, you want them all comped. You still leave the bartender a twenty for a tip whether you get 1 or 4 drinks, so the bartender doesn't give a shit, they made theirs. The value of the drink has dropped from the $5 on the menu to $3.50, then the value drops to $2.00, and finally to $0.00. I saw this with coupons. When people get used to getting coupons to use, they don't go to a particular place unless they have a coupon.

Only the owner actually knows what the margins are. A big chain restaurant may actually be a local franchisee that pays costs that a local restaurant doesn't pay.
As for your responsibility, you have none. It is up to the management of the establishment. If they are okay with their business practices, then they will be the ones to ultimately face the consequences. I would say enjoy the gravy train while it lasts, but don't be surprised if some changes get made or the gravy train gets derailed.

I worked for a company that owned a hotel and some restaruants years ago and it was quite shocking all the thinking that has to go into running a bar. The whole free drinks are great theory can really come back to haunt you. Some asshole came in, was drunk and went out and killed a guy. The hotel was sued. Because they were able to prove they didn't serve him, the hotel was found not liable. If an accident occurs like this, and the customer was given free drinks, everyone involved is well and truly fucked, especially the owner, and it doesn't matter if he knew or not.

The objective when firing a 5.56 round at a man is to incapacitate him. The best outcome is to wound him severely enough that he takes up the maximum amount of resources.
The objective when shooting at a deer is to kill it quickly and painlessly.
Unless you are a great shot, a 5.56 (.223) round isn't enough gun for a deer.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at December 06, 2012 09:27 PM (GsoHv)
Like the street drag racers used to say - "you gotta run what you brung".
Head shots would work fine on a deer with a .223. If you're hunting for the freezer, you don't care what their heads look like anyway.

Chest shot with a .30 caliber round at high velocity will kill a deer quickly about 95% of the time.

The BH and I enjoyed the hell out of St. Petersburg. It does have amazing similarities to the US in really odd ways. For instance, both (at one point) decided to put the capital of a continent-wide empire in an estuary on the edge closest to Europe in an undeveloped swamp. If you want the Russian take on Ukraine, take the Wayback Machine back to the program "Hee-Haw" -- the honeys, the straw in the hair, the odd accent.... It's actually uncanny -- especially when the letters start getting familiar: big octagonal red signs that say "CTOΠ" mean "STOP". It's pronounced the same

TheyÂ’re just trying to prepare you for the inevitable crash. Their ideas donÂ’t work and they know it, so now all they can do is try to make you think their failure is somehow a statement of principle. The dystopian post-Obama future depicted in Dan SimmonsÂ’ Flashback gets a little more plausible every minute.

ACE'S PROPHESIES
What I can't understand is the simple hate, the hate for hate's sake, the hate of The Other for the sake of Self-Affirmation. I especially can't understand the hate coming from the sort of people who will insist to you, quite seriously, that they have essentially purged all primitive and dark emotion from themselves and now exist on an elevated Oprah/Chopra plane of pidgin Zen harmony and balance.
Likewise this sort of thing -- the "taking delight" or laughing at some kind of human flaw or sin -- is of such a de minimis or venial nature that I wonder if we overconcern ourselves with this sort of thing in order to avoid thinking too much about more serious things.

Read up to post 500 and something.
About the free drink thing: Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo
Evidentlly it's starting to bother you.
There are drinks and then there are drinks.
Four free drinks per trip, three trips a month, I wouldn't consider that a big deal.
Now, four free drinks per trip, three trips a day, that I would.
If the managers are as good as you think, AND you don't see anything illegal going on, AND you are not involved w/ the business.. then their money is their money.
If it continues to bother you, lay an equal lamount of money on the bar and tell the bartender it makes you feel uncomfortable to get free drinks.

Another thought..
About the freedrink thing: Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo
It was an open question about a personal situation.
I guess you don't know what the other patrons are getting free.
If you do, it has gone beyond personal, and I think you do need to speak to management.

"when you break and enter into people houses, you are taking the chance that you'll run into Leatherface."
Sorry. That's the liberal/progressive pov. To them, anyone with a gun is, by definition, 'leatherface.'
Stop spreading their propaganda for them, people.
Jeezus...you are stupid, aren't you?
See: Breaking and entering. Trespassing. Castle Doctrine. Stand your ground. Self-defense. You know, all that second amendment, constitutional stuff.

Instead of implying that a "deranged" homeowner shot and killed nice, middle-class and misunderstood teenagers...
How's about, 'hard working, middle-class, tax-paying homeowner defends his life and home against unknown and dangerous criminals who broke into his home.'
From 'Birthers' to 'there were no WMDS' to 'deranged' homeowner kills innocent teenagers, and much, much more, you keep buying into and spreading left-wing memes...for the same left-wing MSM you claim to hate, distrust and rail against.
The term 'birthers' was first coined on a left-wing progressive site much like JournaList, then spread to the MSM...and the day after that, Conservatives were using it...against other conservatives.
Evidence of WMDs in Iraq were found within the first few days after the invasion, but the MSM re-framed the issue to imply that because there were no *huge* warehouses or *huge* laboratory complexes *full* of WMDs, that there were no WMDs. Ignoring precursor chemicals found next to arty shells...which were staged to be used within half an hour of a sighting of US forces. (The US military was moving so hard and fast, the Iraqis didn't have the time to mix and load the weapons.)
...and WMD's, and evidence thereof were also found in rather large trucks... all throughout the earliest stages of the invasion. A couple of days later, conservatives were ignoring the evidence and repeating the MSM narrative. Later, you even ignored evidence of WMD's found in warehouses and complexes around Iraq...and denied that such factual evidence and proof wasn't really an indicator that there were WMD's in Iraq, after all. Which is what the MSM and the left wanted you to believe.
Now, a man, much like most of you, defends himself from unknown, and possibly -probably- dangerous criminals, in his own home...and you buy the MSM meme...that because he used a gun to defend himself, that he's 'deranged,' and you call him 'leatherface,' as in, 'anyone with a gun is automatically the author of horror and should be prosecuted for the good and safety of the nation.'
If you posit any other response, you're no defender of liberty, freedom, or The Constitution.
Because he didn't call the police and the parents of those pretty, young, innocent teenagers, immediately? He made a threat assesment, dealt with the threat, and then had to try to deal with the emotional aftermath of killing another human being...in self-defense. Now, he's deranged?
But...it's evil when the government tries to take second amendment rights away from Veterans? ...and when a man relies upon the second amendment, and defends his life, in his own home, he's 'deranged?' Do you hear what you're saying?
Collectivists. Statists. That's what you are.
Read "1984" again. You're not a 'Winston.' You're everyone else in the system he tried to escape.
