So where are the best and worst places to survive zombie aka progressive apocalypse?

1. Texas with a survivability score of 67

With a low population density and more federally licensed firearms dealers, hospitals and Walmarts than any other state, Texas is an easy choice for best place to survive the zombie apocalypse. It also has more military bases than all but a handful of states, which will come in handy to protect your desert camp from zombie invasion, or, in the event that Fort Hood is lost, as a place to salvage supplies. If youÂ’re really worried about the ZA, a scouting trip to Texas could be a good idea.

And the worst state is:
50. Rhode Island with a survivability score of 14.75

And here it is, Rhode Island is hands down the worst place to survive the zombie apocalypse. Its population density is high, there are no mountains or guns, and, really, not much of anything else that would be useful either. So hereÂ’s some advice to Rhode Islanders, when the mysterious bitings/illnesses start, head south.

Swatting Flies

Fruit flies show why swatting at flies is often fruitless. You need to be at least a Level IV Ninja with +20 chop sticks to catch a fly man.

Higher Education

How do you miss the answer when every letter has already been filled in? Oh my.

Different War Game

This could be interesting. Typically in a war game, you play the hero, a soldier, an airman, etc that brings the fight to the bad guys. In the game This War Of Mine, you are instead playing the role of a survivor in war torn city. This War Of Mine turns war survivors' tales into game design.

Earthquake Shield

Seriously? A step towards a seismic cloak.

A large-scale experiment shows that a periodic array of boreholes embedded in the soil can deflect the energy of an incoming seismic wave.

Cheesy Horror Flick

Tired of Sharknado? How about giving Poseidon Rex a try.

Or you could check out the web series based on the comic book Enormous.

Well Duh!

I hope Gates is wrong but he's likely right. US response to Russia's use of force 'likely to lead to more conflict'. It does not help that the so-called Pacific pivot has been largely a nothing burger.

What Putin has done basically is to give the go-ahead to the Chinese and say, well, just take them by force if you think they belong to you. And I think that's a very bad message as well and is likely to lead to future crises and potentially armed conflict ...

One of the reasons that I think we should have reacted more strongly [after Russia took over Crimea] is because once you let those principles go by the wayside, you're probably in for more crises and conflict.

59 NDH, A few years ago I was trapped here alone in my house with a frigging squirrel, my older brother lives downstairs & I told him something made a mess of the DD box of blueberry muffins on my table. We looked everywhere & he went to see my mother. Of course the little rat came back out when I was alone. I heard his claws on kitchen floor. I had him behind small cabinet, one hand had Fantastik & the other had something that is equally bad if you get in eyes. I sprayed & he ran out. I turned on vacuum cleaner & stood in hallway with it pointed at it, it was behind my mother's curio full of expensive Hummels. I called a friend but he couldn't come over. I should have called next door neighbor, he grew up on a far & goes hunting. My older brother & I got it out the front door. I think all animals are afraid of vacuum cleaners.

I had no idea that Andy Richter was that good and Wolf Blitzer that retarded.  Some sidekick actor from a late night talk show schooled a serious journalist on tv so completely, I don't know how Wolf ever showed his face again.

Vacs are really good with buggies, especially if you put a whiff of diatomaceous earth in first. You can't put too much in, because it'll make you vacuum into a sub-micron filter and clog nearly instantly, but just a little, and all the little buggies get dusted when they get sucked in....and it gets into the joints of their exoskeleton so that they don't seal properly, whereupon they dehydrate.

96 "It does not help that the so-called Pacific pivot has been largely a nothing burger."

The US military is still largely set up for the classic Fulda Gap fight in Europe, trying to break the momentum of the Soviet shock armies. That was the dominant mode of thinking and training for so long that it's a difficult habit to break.

There really seems to be very little appreciation for the fundamentally different nature of Pacific Rim warfare. The vast distances, the paucity of safe rear areas to refit, the tiny number of easily targeted local bases.

Nor have the Pentagon ever fully appreciated how different an adversary the PRC are compared to the Soviet Union. The USA never was deeply economically intermeshed with the USSR. The USSR never understood things like Western financial markets and their potential panicked fragility.

I'm becoming hugely pessimistic about any thought of a Kennan-style "containment" of Chinese expansionism. There isn't adequate muscle left to contain, nor are there adequate brains to direct the absent muscle.

I would not be surprised to see places such as Australia and Siberia absorbed as Greater Chinese satrapies in the lifetimes of many of us here. And to see the USA slowly become a back of the pack, second-rate "regional power".

Wyoming with a survivability score of 48.75 That doesn't seem right to me...New York gets a higher score than Wyoming? Personally, I think I'd rather take my chances in a place like Wyoming, than New York. Because fewer people means fewer potential zombies. Never have had a tarantula around the house, though I see them sometimes while hiking around here in NorCal. Or find them crossing the road. They usually don't survive that.

They really aren't anything to be too worried about other than arachnophobic jitters. They're not very fast and, despite their size, they are not going to poison you with a bite.

(We do have some species here that certainly will do so. Notably black widows. They're a lot smaller than tarantulas. I move tarantulas to safety but I kill all black widows instantly on sight.)

Wonder when they'll figure out that they're already out from under the umbrella without having been officially informed of same?

American nuclear capability has been being brutally cut to the bone. Warheads, delivery systems, trained personnel, everything. Barely enough to deter attacks on the CONUS. Much less upon distant allies. This is not the muscular Cold War era American strategic sector any longer.

This gap could have been, but has not been, filled by development of antiballistic missile systems. Starved for funding.

As for Australia building nukes, while the country has plenty of uranium, Aussies had better be prepared to come up a long, steep, expensive learning curve.

Right now, the Oz military-industrial sector can't competently build and operate even conventionally powered submarines -- reference the Collins Class disaster -- which are a comparatively simple technological proposition compared to becoming a nuclear weapons state.

190 As for Australia building nukes, while the country has plenty of uranium, Aussies had better be prepared to come up a long, steep, expensive learning curve.

Right now, the Oz military-industrial sector can't competently build and operate even conventionally powered submarines -- reference the Collins Class disaster -- which are a comparatively simple technological proposition compared to becoming a nuclear weapons state.

You have to stop thinking about realism at some point and go with fun instead. Either the game will just be survivor horror like Silent Hill, or if it's too bleak it'll just drive away all but the curious, and they might just play the demo.

That 'Earthquake Shield' seems like a pretty good idea...

But it would only work in areas where there is all-soil and not bedrock.

We've been having an 'earthquake swarm' here in Oklahoma.

And they don't seem to know why.

There are some really old fault lines, in the area where the quakes are happening.

But they aren't very big...and the quakes aren't happening right on the fault lines.

It's weird.

215 Posted by: Jenny Hates Her Phone but Likes Doggehs at April 12, 2014 10:55 PM (N7MTI), Getting a youngish adult dog from a good rescue can be perfect for people with kids. Many of these rescues foster the dog with people who know a lot about dogs. They know whether the dogs are good with kids, check out their temperaments, and can tell you whether they are house-broken and so on. So you end up with a dog that is past most of the puppy craziness, which is helpful if you have kids.

A sensible thought. It is pretty much recommended now for all smaller allies of the USA to decouple their military and foreign policies from that of America. Even though that will mean painful budget decisions about spending more on their own militaries.

A Suez moment is coming. One in which, like the Brits before us, Americans will suddenly have the shocking realization that, oh my goodness, we are not a global superpower any longer. We can no longer project force beyond certain points. If only because we can't financially afford to.

When that happens, the smaller allies who have not prepared themselves will be in for a huge shock of their own.

The man said that he hadn't realized how big it would get. Everything costs more with those giant breeds, food, vet bills, and grooming. They require more medication, because it's based on their size, and they require more anesthetic for surgery. I gotta say though, once that Great Dane was at its normal weight it was an impressive dog.

Heh, yeah...that was going around for a while, but it's been totally debunked.

It was caused by a 'report' done by a liberal professor at OU, who is a transplant from New York.

Or maybe she is from California...

Anyway...she started out with an agenda that she wanted to forward, and wrote a poorly sourced 'report' to try to back up her assertions.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey happens to have been researching the subject for decades.

They quickly issued a paper which thoroughly debunked her 'report'.

Creating earthquakes by fracking is like trying to demolish a skyscraper with a nail gun. Some people don't comprehend the scale involved between a geological formation like a fault line and and oil field.

The Leonard Geophysical Observatory in Leonard, OK is where the 'brains' of the Oklahoma Geological Survey hang out.

Here is there site:

http://www.okgeosurvey1.gov/

You can see a List there of the recent quakes in Oklahoma.

They used to map them...but their map is down right now.

You will see a link there named 'Research Page'...this will give you the PDFs of their research on 'Triggered and Induced Seismicity'.

Which is nerd talk for 'why fracking didn't do it'.

Wow, NDH...that sucks.

At least it looks like that rancher has the local sheriff on his side.

I remember some Executive Orders that Barky did...back in his first term...that gave some strange powers over Farmers, Ranchers and Farm Lands, to other government agencies.

Government agencies that have nothing to do with Farming or Ranching.

It was odd at the time...and went mostly unnoticed.

It's like Barky and his weasels are getting ready to do something.

Maybe sell off large tracts of what they deem to be 'govt land'?

I dunno.

But there had to be some sort of long-term reason behind why he did all those EO's in his first term.

Sympathies. My anti-bug regimen these days is long pants and long sleeves, with a field shirt that has buttoned epaulet straps on the shoulders.

Pants cuffs and wrist cuffs get, worn on the outside of the fabric, small stretch sweatbands saturated in uncut 100% DEET. A sweatband or sock or rag similarly treated goes under each epaulet strap.

This really cuts the nuisance biting way down.

And keeps the high concentration DEET away from the skin. There is some discussion in the medical literature about whether it might not be good for you at such elevated percentages.

Mind you, you will breathe in some of the DEET fumes from the rags on your shoulders. Some people react to that. Unavoidable.

Yeah, they're probably sharpening their knives at the IRS, as we speak.

They could come up with some 'back taxes' that they declare they owe...and come in and take his ranch that way.

They only backed down because there were too many people poking around with video cameras.

And also...asking questions about Dirty Harry Reed's connection to all this.

I stumbled across a video on Youtube, where a 'Land Broker' guy was telling how many times he'd been sent to Bundy to try to get him to sell his land.

Bundy's ranch has highway frontage.

I think I read where he's got 300 acres, himself...not a part of the 'Open Range' land where he had grazing rights.

And Bundy's land has been sought after for some time, by developers, as though it's a part of a puzzle that someone is putting together.

358 This writer knows nothing about Nebraskans. I would easily take my chances in Nebraska over Texas or California. I would guess at least half, if not more, of the state population have guns. Also, everyone knows that freezing weather slows zombies, so all we would have to do is wait it out until winter. The lower population actually works in our favor. This high population states will be the first to be overrun.

363 Here's another highlight of Al and Dave's show tonight: https://tinyurl.com/nugyf43 The video looks like a more coffeehouse-like setting, but tonight's concert was in a 658 seat theater that looked to be pretty much sold out. I was in the first row, having bought my ticket months ago upon receiving an e-mail alert. Afterwards, they hung around selling CDs, signing autographs and chatting with fans. All in all, a very pleasant evening. There was a time back in the 70s when he was playing arenas with a full band, but he has aged very gracefully and continues to write and record quality music and play small acoustic shows. And as you can tell, his voice hasn't changed a bit.

I have some of the fattest squirrels you'll ever see...gorging themselves in my bird feeders, willow.

They're fat, sassy and clowns.

I don't mind them so much...even when they tear up my feeders.

I have six feeders, and it's nothing to see twenty squirrels out there in the mornings, fighting over getting their time in a feeder.

Occasionally a hawk will swoop in and take one of them away.

But that's just the circle of life.

Hawks have to eat too.

And if they didn't thin out the herd...there would  be way too many of them.

424 Our government agencies have now been weaponized and are being used to persecute us. *** Re the Hage case, this is what one judge who heard the case had to say: Chief Judge Robert C. Jones of the Federal District Court of Nevada issued a blistering decision that charged officials of the BLM and other agencies with malicious and criminal conduct, and actually engaging in a decades-long “conspiracy” against the Hages. Judge Jones said he found that “the government and the agents of the government in that locale, sometime in the ’70s and ’80s, entered into a conspiracy, a literal, intentional conspiracy, to deprive the Hages of not only their permit grazing rights, for whatever reason, but also to deprive them of their vested property rights under the takings clause, and I find that that’s a sufficient basis to hold that there is irreparable harm if I don’t ... restrain the government from continuing in that conduct.” "In the present case,” declared Judge Jones, “the Government's actions over the past two decades shock the conscience of the Court."

Yeah, RWC...it does.

This is why I keep hoping for Rick Perry for President.

He's been the only one out there saying that he wants to "make the federal government as inconsequential in our lives as possible".

He understands our Food Producers...like none of the other potential candidates do.

And he's also not-a-lawyer.

433 Me being Croatian, the whole post-war brokering has a specific bad taste in my mouth. It welded certain slavic tribes that hadn't ever been in the same country in the entirety of their history together into One Yugoslavia, but under Serbian royalty and thumb seeing as they were on the side of the winners.

Posted by: Sister Sestina at April 13, 2014 01:38 AM (LtUE0)

The idea that Croatians were "unredeemed" Serbs languishing in Habsburg captivity was just part of the pre-WWI Serbian pan-Slav propaganda effort.  The first chapters of The Sleepwalkers by Clark does a masterful and meticulous job of documenting this chicanery, from the murder of King Alexander and Queen Draga of Serbia by fanatical Serbia nationalists in 1903 up until the declarations of war in July/August of 1914.

437 To be honest many Croatians bought into a certain amount of the Pan-Slavic romance. When you're in country with one group you make goo-goo eyes at the other; when you finally get with that other you realize hooooly crap, that was a bad move.

446 Been reading the Washington Post from August 1914.   As WWI was getting rolling the WashPo ran a very serious story reporting that an Italian scientist named Signor Ulivi had delivered to France his secret plans for the "F Ray".  This was, per the Wash Po, a secret device that would make any explosives in a 15 mile radius to spontaneously explode, whether on ship, ordnance wagon, or in a soldier's pocket. The Wash Po even had a nice illustration and promised the F Ray would end war forever.

Nice to know, some things never change.

453 The people that made Sharknado are making a zombie tv series this fall called Z Nation. It sounded kind of like the plot of The Last of Us with a small group transporting a guy that was immune from the zombie flu from NY to the last viral research lab left which conveniently is in California. On the one hand I expect it to be crap because it's the Sharknado company (The Asylum) and SyFy producing it, but on the other hand the project boss was behind Eureka which was a show I mostly enjoyed.

476 "In the comments, not the topic" OHH! You mean the posts? I hadn't really noticed. Sometimes I do read those things, even the ones that aren't ONT. Even Ace's! But they're like when I'm listening to Mark Levin on the radio, and they interrupt him to have "news" from ABC. I hope you're not saying Ace needs to be more Syrias. Last time that happened.... And the morning news threads have certainly covered this.
