Last night was the peak but you can still try to catch the Geminid Meteor Shower. SMOD is such a tease. Beer

So any of you morons try This Beer? 6 bottles for $84.99??? I don't care how good it is, it's not $84.99 good. Of course, in my view, the best beer is the cold one that's in your hand.
Westvleteren XII is produced by Trappist monks in Belgium and sold at the abbey of Saint Sixtus in the Belgian countryside. The beer can usually only be purchased by reservation at the abbey - and reservations are extremely hard to come by.
I suppose this would beat an O'Doul's if you had to drink something non-alcoholic at a party. Romulan Ale.

Bacon
Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival Sells Out In Less Than Four Minutes. Of course it did! Um, shouldn't the Iowa Pork Queen be holding some bacon or have a tiara made of bacon?

Dessert

I think I'm going to try this one during the holidays. Oreo-Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies. I'll use dark chocolate though. It's healthier for you.
Decembeaver
I guess having pink colors all over NFL teams for a month wasn't enough. Now we get Decembeaver. Women Get A Shot At Not Shaving For Cancer. I assume this means legs too?
Vodka
Behold, the power of vodka. Vodka Saves Two Circus Elephants From Freezing To Death In Siberia. Uh uh. Sure it did. I'm surprised the trainer shared his vodka.

What a day. First the Connecticut tragedy, then a call from my daughter tonight. She works as a caregiver to seniors still living at home. After the first of the year, her employers are moving everyone to part-time hours. Thanks loads, ObamaCare.

Emergency travel - how to make field expidate bio diesel fuel - so your car will run 50 - 100 - 200 miles - it will clog engine in time but you travel and you can get another car that is stranded and make more fuel -
find grease trap - fast food resturant etc.
use grease as is but will clog engine faster and when cold
much better
cook down grease after skimimg off solids - heat to thin - with covert fire if need be
need two chemicals methonel and lye
gas line anti- freeze store product is methonel
drain cleaner is lye
mix 5 parts cooking oil grease and 1 part chemicals
1 part which is gas anti freeze with 1/2 tablespoon of drain cleaner
put both chemicals in can and shake vigously a few minutes - carefull becomes hot
pour chemicals in cooking oil grease - filter with cloth - pour in gas tank

Thank heavan. I thought I was the only one who wondered, "Save the Pandas! Why?" Probably most of the species we are sweating to save have had a 'This is to notify you that you have failed the big kahuna of survival exams' stamped on them by Mother Nature a couple hundred years ago. No good swimming against that tide.

Hey, babygirl. I got nuthin', too sad a day. But, man, your poor son, shingles is fucked up. When I had it, I just had 3 little itchy red spots on my upper arm. When my mom had it, it was hell on earth. Isn't it really some other family's turn here at some point? Although, you think that and then you think about those angels in Connecticut and what their families have no hope of ever moving past. Not in a good mood here. BCochran, the pump every time unless you're shooting for sport and require major speed. Even a beginning level shooter can rack a pump nearly as fast as a semi cycles, so there's no advantage there for most uses (by which I mean they'll have the forearm forward and another round chambered before they reacquire a sight picture). Since a defensive weapon should have as few moving parts as possible, and there's not much out there as reliable as a pump shotgun with a proven design, I say go with the pump. I'm not sure what the need is for all the rails and crap on it, but that's a discussion of esthetics over function.

Someone posted on teh early open thread about making homeade almond joy bars and then went off w/o giving the recipe. Here is a couple from allrecipes. Bakers should feel to test and let me know which is better

unsweetened chocolate
1 14 oz can sweetend condensed milk
3 cups coconut
1 tsp vanilla, 1 pinch salt, 1 cup whole almonds
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In the top half a double boiler melt the chocolate and condensed milk, stirring frequently.
Pour the melted chocolate mixture
over the coconut. Stir in the vanilla and salt. Mix well until the
coconut is completely coated. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls onto the
prepared baking sheet. Press one whole almond into the top of each

The fact is, rock songs are only partly about what the "artist" intended them to be. The song's true meaning is always defined by the AUDIENCE. I think that's one of the things that makes rock an enduring part of the culture.

Everything else being equal, "Back on the Chain Gang" is a really well-written song. Some of the other stuff The Pretenders did isn't all that great, but at least Ms. Hynde recognized that people that weren't like her were enjoying her music. Kinda the opposite of the bint (Missy Elliott - I can't remember) who went off on that "my songs aren't for white people" rant.

I've heard the Grammys likened to when your grandmother buys you an album for your birthday or something. She knows she's heard a lot about that album so she buys it thinking it must be good. It sucks, but she means well. The RnRHoF makes the concious decision to choose inductees that will increase their business - diversity, who has a great PR machine behind them, etc. It's all for the good of promoting the HoF, not recognizing talent and influence.

The record companies get behind both big time. They know that an artist winning a Grammy or getting into the HOF mean big sales for that artist. So they push their other artists into pushing certain bands for those things.
When that doesn't work, they just resort to good old fashioned bribery.

Turning the bottles, I'm sure you know, is what makes champagne so expensive. A few blow up each time, and, when I was learning anyway, several champagnistes were killed doing this job every year. It all adds up.
I have made these ales. No near-death experiences, but easily 3 - 4 times as much work, and much more time waiting, than other complex beers. $85 a six is way too expensive, and you should not pay that. You should make your own.
The best beer is free, just like the best laundry service, right? I don't think you should be able to say things like that if you can't fart at the same time.

I didn't know how Jackson was going to take a children's book and eventually seamlessly link it into the sophisticated and grim LOTR without killing its whimsy, but I think he's doing a pretty solid job.
Lucas, THIS is how you do a prequel.

My daughter in law knows I love deviled eggs and seldom get them. When the family gets together she usually brings a large plate of them, which I greatly appreciate. To relieve her of shelling the hard boiled eggs I bought a box of something called eggies. They are nylon egg shapped thingies you crack an egg into and boil the eggs. I hard boiled a couple eggs to try them out today. They are more of a pain in the ass than they are worth really. Then I got thinking about their potential. You could put food dye in them for green eggs and ham. You could add hot sauce to the egg white and red food dye as a warning and serve hard boiled. Put three yolks in on for a heart attack special. Put diced ham or pickle relish in them. I think this could be interesting. There is more potential for entertainment here than I thought at first.

Hate to break it to you but they are ursines and not related to racoons. They've checked the genetics of it and yes its a bear. I remember the "Panda is related to raccoons not bears" as a kid and by high school they had determined, yep, definitely a bear.

The party sees the Lonely Mountain. A thrush flies past them to the mountain. The camera seems to follow that thrush the whole way. Eventually the bird lands atop one of the giant dwarven statues at the entrance of a devastated great hall. The bird then picks up something in its beak and starts trying to break it against stone. Scene changes to the interior and camera pans over this fast sea of golden treasure. You hear the bird's actions reverberate in this vast space. Camera keeps panning to this one giant pile of coins that suddenly shifts, coins cascade off this giant eye, and then the eye opens. Followed by the credits.

Actually, there is still debate. Those who call pandas ursidae are forced to admit they branched off so long ago as to make it a very qualified classification. The closest living relative is the spectacled bear, which is also subject to classification controversy.
The red panda is officially in its own family, booted out of the ursidae and written out of the will.

My impression was that it was "more real than real," which can be a little disconcerting, but I think that worked for a fantasy story. It's slightly wooziness-inducing (the folks who talk about it making them sick are being overly dramatic, I think). It took a bit for me to get into it--the difference reminded me of when I go to my folks' house and watch their HDTV (I don't have one myself)--there's something about the motion of figures in HD that still throws me off. Similar thing here, although your mileage may vary.

It happens whenever they make one aspect better. They have to up their game everywhere else. A lot of people in TV hated the transition to HD because a lot of stuff they used to get away with was now unacceptable. Aging actors couldn't hide behind makeup as readily. SFX got tougher to pull off on the cheap. Set design got a lot more demanding.
A show like Star Trek gets a lot more expensive when you expect most of the audience to be watching in 1080i. I once did some IT work for Babylonian Productions and got a tour of the stages in Sunland where most of B-5 was shot. The amazing thing about it was how generally shabby it really was. They used every trick they had to make everything look much better on TV than it did in real life.

There's a brewpub in Appleton, WI that makes a pumpkin stout that is so delicious, it would make a grown man cry.

So.....
Which is the biggest boost for these "artists"?....
a grammy....
getting into the hall of fame.... or.....
their unexpected demise.... ala Whitney Houston. Big sales all around, but, which is the best for the bottom line?
Posted by: Some Guy in Wisconsin at December 15, 2012 12:28 AM (LMtDw)
It is all three. Bonnie Raitt sold a decent amount of albums back in the 80's, but when she won the Grammy, her career took off with the mainstream.
The Hall of Fame is a little harder to gauge, but when someone you never have heard of makes the HOF, they get a nice bump in sales.
Death though, that is the biggie. Elvis and Michael Jackson were cash poor at the time of their deaths, but the huge influx of cash at their deaths allowed their families to hold on to their assets, and that is where the real cash is. Jackson owned the Beatle's catalog, but had to leverage it, with the influx, the lien on it goes away, and Jackson's kids get to grow up with Papa Joe beating their asses.
Hey TJ!

The kids are dead. Ditto the teachers.
The perp is dead and identified.
No other persons are known to be perps. There's no evidence of more than one shooter.
We know the names of the teacher/s in the class, and the students themselves.
A headcount has established all the surviving students and faculty.
We thus know the names of the missing.
A thousand photos have been taken of the crime scene. We have oral testimony of hundreds on-site.
IOW: We don't need no steenkin' blood trajectories to understand that a perp killed the kids and the school personnel.
So: why are the police NOT allowing the kids' bodies to be passed onto coroners and thence to their grieving parents?
In the UK school killings of fifteen years ago, the parents were allowed to sit with their dead children on the site, before they were carried off to the coroner.
So...why again are we Americans being subjected to officious technicalities when human feelings are sidelined ----especially when the forensics will yield NO useful evidence???

A guy jumped off a bridge onto the interstate here in town yesterday morning. 4 cars hit his body, the interstate was shut down for 6 hours while they processed the crime scene. The police are following protocol, it's not the humane thing to do, but they have to do it. They have to make sure what happened is what happened. It sucks, but the second they don't follow the proper procedures, someone goes free. Plus, there are 28 bodies. If they take just 30 minutes per body, that's 14 hours. I have a feeling they take more time than that with each body.
It isn't CSI where the process the crime scene, interview the witnesses, and make an arrest in an hour.

Just who is it who "goes free" here? Some unknown perp?
Since when does the later evidence of another perp VITIATE the work of the initial CSI team on the site?
You seem to think that because someone "missed something" that lets the new suspect off.

You keep hearing that because people make idiotic arguments. The same principle that is applied in theory in this case has been disproved repeatedly through history: Vietnam, Afghanistan (twice in 30 years), etc. There is a big difference between having that force available and actually using it. The USG using even tactical nukes within the country's borders would turn the entire populace against it, even those that supported a (more) repressive regime.

Well, the "third rate actor" has already fooled the majority of voters in this country into believing he's "likable" and "cares about them" much more than Rich and Evil Romney. Those same voters are undoubtably sure that Obama is crying into his pillow tonight because he cares about those dead kids, instead of coolly calculating how this can work to his political advantage.

You and the media have solved the case, so the cops should just quit investigating and turn the bodies over to the parents, or better yet, let the parents come in and see their children where they were killed.
Cripes, when a friend of mine committed suicide, the cops spent 6 hours at the scene going over everything. They have to be thorough, and it's not because of this case, it is because of all their other cases. It is because they want to make sure that they don't cut corners. Was it right for the police to shut the interstate here down for 6 hours during rush hour because some guy jumped off a bridge down on the road below where he was then hit by 4 cars? The cops then declared it a "crime scene". People saw him on the bridge, then watched him jump. But the police still had to investigate even though the cops thought that it was a suicide.

A few years back there was a boy complaining of pain in his foot. X-rays revealed a tooth growing there. The doctors speculated that the base cells that became the tooth wandered off from their intended location while he was gestating. Posted by: epobirs at December 15, 2012 01:53 AM (kcfmt)
It might was probably the residue from a "vanished twin" - an identical twin that died very early during the pregnancy. The book "Freaks" by Leslie Fiedler has a chapter on people born with extra limbs, a third nipple or a foot sticking out of their torso. Those body parts belonged to their twins. Since I was born an identical twin myself (my twin died 13 hours after we were born and I nearly died myself - I was 2 lbs. 8 oz. at birth) I found that book absolutely terrifying.
That any twins, particularly identical twins, are born whole and healthy is a real miracle. The womb is designed for one baby at a time. A mutliple birth pregnancy is automatically considered high risk. If a twin doesn't end up dying before birth (with the potential of it's body parts fusing onto the body of the viable twin), they are very likely to be born prematurely and extremely underweight. I work in a hospital with a very well-regarded neonatal ICU. Most of the 1 and 2 pound babies in there are twins or triplets (or babies born to drug addicts, but that's a different subject.)

I used to have that book! Also, Leslie Fiedler was frequently referenced in Philip Jose Farmer stories as a kind of ongoing in-joke. I guess they were buddies or something. I was surprised then to find out he was a real person.
I used to have several books on the subject, although I cannot say what created the interest. When I started working for John Strong selling balloons and eventually on the carny circuit, he was amazed at how much trivia I knew. He had spent his whole life immersed in this stuff, being the son of a circus owner, and knew a lot of the people who appeared in those books.
Two other good books were 'Very Special People' and 'We Who Are Not Like Others.' When I tracked down the latter volume to a book store in Toluca Lake, I was surprised to find out the woman who owned the store was the daughter of the author.

Clinton IS a wanker and a phoney - but he's a very American sort of phoney. I never voted for, or liked the man, but I always thought the source of his appeal was that Americans have long had a certain affection for the charming snake-oil or used car salesman. We knew Eddie Haskell was a lying BS artist, but we enjoyed it when Eddie showed up with his swarmy "Hello, Mrs. Cleaver." Clinton was Eddie Haskell in the WH.
But Obama? He strikes me as so humorless and so fundamentally anti-American that I truly am mystified by his appeal.

Sounds like the storyline currently running in the three Green Lantern books. (Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, and Green Lantern - New Guardians) The guys behind the Green Lantern Corps have decided that trying to get sentient life to behave properly is futile and are intent on replacing everybody in the universe with a new life form completely subservient to the Guardians' will.
Because it will be so much less messy that way.

While Mormons have some 'interesting' ideas, they are nothing compared to many other religions when it comes to weird.
JeremiadBullfrog makes a great point about modern physics. While the unplumbed mysteries of gravity are manifest, quantum mechanics and string theory are outright bizarre.
The universe is more amazing than we can imagine.
PS. I appear to live near a Mormon colony in Michigan with tons of neighbors who are of that persuasion. As a group, they are the nicest most reliable people I have ever had the pleasure to associate with despite their 'interesting' ideas.

Y'know, if being Mormon only consisted of eschewing drugs and alcohol, behaving decently toward people, wearing funny underwear, and talking about strange stuff on Sundays.....let's face it, the top 100 things to worry about with them are: 1-97, behaving decently toward people; 98-100, the funny underwear or whatever.

During that walk, we passed several schools, and not a small number of playgrounds full of children.
And in every case, there were armed adults standing guard over the small children.
Nothing overt, just a presence that ensured that anyone wishing harm to the children would face a determined and deadly defense.
Here...we create zones where a person with evil intent can be assured of defenseless targets.
