Forget the Mayans, Isaac Newton Had His Own End Of The World Prediction. In 2060. So you still have time to do whatever you need to. That is unless the Mayans were correct. Then you're screwed. Here's Why You're Going To Die In The Apocalypse.
1. The only food that can survive an apocalypse has been discontinued.

10 Common Items That Were Invented By Accident. Is the Slinky really considered a common item?
Vulcanized Rubber: Charles Goodyear had spent ages trying to find a way to make rubber resistant to heat and cold. After a number of failed attempts, he finally stumbled across a mixture that worked. Before turning out the lights one evening, he accidentally spilled some rubber, sulfur, and lead onto a stove resulting in a mixture that charred and hardened but could still be used.
Hockey

You know, if the NHL lockout continues, I just might have to give The Bikini Hockey League a shot.
Car Mileage
Is 200,000 Miles On Your Car The New Normal? I'd say yes. I didn't hit 200,000 on my last car but it was 14 years old and starting to cost some money to keep running so I'm driving a new 2013 Nissan Altima SL now. Like it so far. 36.5 MPG is mighty nice too. So how long are you guys gonna drive your current cars? What type of repair would make you buy a new one?
A little Christmas Video
Models should probably stick to modeling and leave the singin' to the pros. Entertaining nonetheless.
Happy Birthday History
Hmmm. I had no idea that It's Illegal To Sing 'Happy Birthday' In Public. I always wondered why chain restaurants never sang 'Happy Birthday' but instead sang something else.
There are about a million other confusing transactions in the story, but those are the basic facts, and why “Happy Birthday” is copyrighted; in fact, according to Snopes, the song brings in roughly $2 million in royalties annually for Warner.
Booze Study
Men Think They're More Attractive The More They Drink. Well no shit Sherlock. And the women look hotter too and you do stupid shit when you're drunk. I can't believe people spend money on studies like this.
Canoes

Before there were car backseats, there was the canoe. The Delightfully Sinful History Of Canoes.

And another reason to hate Obama, "Cash for Clunkers". This past year I had to replace a part on my seat that had broken, a repair that was needed to pass state inspection. Mopar no longer makes the part, and thanks to cash for clunkers, no junk yards had the part either. A part my repair guy said used to cost 75 bucks cost me $300 on eBay. So many cars that would have gotten scavenged for parts were just shredded up so that Obama could pay off the UAW.

I have become a believer in synthetic oil. I now run MobilOne in every thing I own and the only engine problem I ever had was back when I was still running conventional oil. The cost difference is noticeable, but well within the reasonable range especially as I really think it increases engine life.

On anything with a turbocharger, for sure. The synth won't polymerize more as its fed to the turbo shaft bearings.
If its a car that sits for extended periods, maybe no. The synth PAG oils are more prone to absorbing moisture than dead dinosaur oils. Anything run with some regularity on synth will boil out any minimal condensation and/or absorbed stuff after a few minutes of running.
I've seen stuff rust even when its run with the pricy Klotz synths if it sits for a long time in a humid environment.

"What type of repair would make you buy a new one?"
Well, we finally broke down and got new vehichles when both the oil and anti-freeze (?) in the Tempo had been leaking for some time and the driver's seat back had had to be propped up with a board for over a year. Mostly we were afraid we couldn't drive it back off the dealer's lot. But it was given to us and we'd driven it about seven years. When the fourth baby was born we also got a 20 year-old van (for cash) but only drove it about 2 years because the King-pins could no longer be aligned.
Both current vehichles have been paid off two years and have needed some repairs, but by G-d, I'm not changing until I absolutely have to. After all, eight-seat minivans don't grow on trees.

The synth oil itself is good for 100k+. Its the crappy filters that get farkled. A high-flow micron range filter (very pricy $100+) would allow for going 100k between changes.
Mobil wanted to advertise Mobil 1 as a 100k oil, but when they found out what a 100k filter would cost (prototypes that worked were actually contracted for and designed and built) they gave up on the idea.

Sounds like a great factory installed option for a new car. $100 for the filter would be lost in the noise, and I'd be willing to let the dealer change the oil at 100 kmiles.

Contrary to popular belief, Twinkies do not have the shelf life of gravel. The modern Twinkie is baked in 190-foot-long ovens operating around the clock. The Continental Baking Company forecasts sales and delivers only a few daysÂ’ supply. (Demand is remarkably stable. If youÂ’ve got a Twinkies monkey on your back, heÂ’s on a short leash.) Twinkies are discarded if they donÂ’t sell in four days.
I especially like the line about the monkey.

I love my car, 91,000 miles still running like new. I crunched the numbers though and even owning it 10 years, leasing would have still been cheaper a month. I'm basically gonna have to own it 20 years before I come out ahead.
Unless you plan on keeping the car for decades, is there really any benefit to owning over leasing?

Might depend on how much driving you do. Don't leases typically have a yearly mileage limit that you're not supposed to go over?
Posted by: buzzion at December 15, 2012 06:55 PM (GULKT)
1.) Don't buy a new car. Let some other sucker take the immediate depreciation hit driving it off the lot;
2.) Make sure when you can see the front end of the car from the driver's seat;
3.) Make sure you can see out your right window when you have a passenger in the front;
4.) Make sure you can see around the rear columns (which is becoming impossible in most vehicles nowadays0;
5.) Air conditioning vents in the back are helpful if you ever have passengers/dogs riding in the back; and
6.) Don't buy a car that incurs $3,000 or higher in damage when accidentally hitting a parking bumper at idling speed because the front end is too low.

These days, yea, it would be. 20 years ago I guess it seemed prohibitive. The filter system my friend designed for Mobil was interesting. A huge glob of very fine stainless steel mesh that started out about the size of a cubic yard and then got squashed down to filter size. It was micron grade and had huge internal trapping surface are so it wouldn't clog easily.
My own personal drill on a brand new or rebuilt engine is dead dinosaur oil for the first 5-10 minutes of running, then drain the oil and a filter swap. After 5-10 minutes the old oil is gonna come out looking like metallic paint there so much metal in it. Do that again after a week or so and switch to synth. The dead dino oils seem to promote initial breakin and ring seating a bit better.

Just in case the law wants to stop your car. Public safety and all that.
And a GPS of course. So they won't have to go to the trouble of having to plant one on the frame to track you.
It will take about 10 years to turnover the majority of vehicles but by 2030, the gov will be able tell you when, where and how you may drive your car. And you won't be able to do squat about it.
It is a privilege you know.

2) the majority of wear and tear on our major highways is from trucks.
how about mandating some reorganization of the transportation rule and incentives to put more stuff on trains. (making them better money makers) and use trucks for local delivery. (the way it was originally imagined until the Teamsters came along.)
Oh yeah them. So much for efficiency and less wear and tear on roads.

The primary aim of modern warfare (in accordance with the principles of doublethink, this aim is simultaneously recognized and not recognized by the directing brains of the Inner Party) is to use up the products of the machine without raising the general standard of living. Ever since the end of the nineteenth century, the problem of what to do with the surplus of consumption goods has been latent in industrial society.

Yes. If the government takes your property, they must pay you. The taking in Kelo to pass along to a private developer sucked, but if New London took the property for a library, it would be for the "public good". New London just needs to pay "fair market value" for the taken property. If the government takes your guns, they should have to do that.

That makes me nervous since our "around town" car is an '04 Cavilier. I just had to have the starter replaced too. Were there any warning signs or anything I could keep an eye out for? Another problem with Cash-for-Clunkers is that there are going to be few reasonably priced older cars for new drivers. This means that I *really* want the Cavilier to survive so that Eldest Kidlet can use it as a learning car.

My understanding is that after all the court fees and back taxes they didn't get anything, but they would have gotten fair market value.
Even after this case, all the changes in eminent domain laws haven't done shit for cases like this. The legislatures all changed their eminent domain laws to make it sound like these types of takings can't be done, but the exceptions they made in these laws still allow Kelo style takings to be done. Instead of it being an industrial/office development, it becomes a park that is being downsized from the original plans, so they sell the surrounding property to MrDeveloper.

Oh, sure. Recent years have shown that. But when the axe finally falls, afterwards will be a different situation. The restrictions on ownership and buying will likely come first. The move to take what's already out there will follow later. IF they go that way.

Also, I got a smart phone yesterday and I've been playing with it a bit. From everything I have experienced thus far I can't imagine why anyone in their right minds would want to try to use the internet on the damn thing except in extreme situations (IE, I need directions to the nearest ammo store). I got it mostly to keep Youngest Son from tying up my phone talking to his little girly friend (he's getting my old one for Christmas) and to have an E-reader, it looks like it will be capable of that, but I can't say I'm extremely thrilled with the (lack of ) battery life.

In theory, ATF is only in possession of 4473's and dealer log books of those dealers that closed up shop, and supposedly NICS doesn't retain info on whoever checks has been run against if they were OK'd.
So, in theory, they'd have to round up a bunch of 4473's and log books from FFL's.
But that's all horse shit. You know the NICS check results are being retained somewhere, and now they got this online 4473 shit.
First they'll start the low hanging fruit - those states and cities that require local gun registration.

I have mentioned this before but so I apologize in advance, but I have
been wondering if the whole civil war thing might have been avoided if
the government had simply bought the slaves at a fair price instead of
pushing to free them without compensation.
Posted by: yankeefifth at December 16, 2012 12:32 AM (Z9EHQ)
===
1860 Census had about 4 million slaves. Auction price about $1000 / ea. So, about $4 billion needed to buy all. (assuming no price increases as supply dropped due to purchases leaving the available market)
Total yearly federal budget at that time -- about 80 million, or about 1/50th the amount needed. So, to take the economic route, taxes would have to be raised, and who would pay them?
In practice, it becomes a political impossibility. Slave owners would be the "beneficiaries" of sham transactions where they received their own taxes back, but the taking still occurred.
Everyone else would be steamed for another reason. Their taxes would be raised to pay slaveholders for behaving in a manner that they either could not afford, or of which they did not approve.
The constitutional process was available, but it was just never going to be politically possible.

In 1964 John Glenn was running for a Senate nomination. He was immensely popular, and regularly mentioned as a Presidential candidate. He had an altercation with a sliding glass door in a bathroom, fell, got cut, injured his inner ear, and spent a long time recuperating. It ended his campaign at the time. Later, of course, he ran against Metzenbaum again and again, and as things worked out he got into the Senate (even though he'd "never held a real job") in time to be implicated in the Savings and Loan scandal.
He wanted to be VP in1976 and President in 1984. The point is, every time his candidacy for anything came up, that bathroom fall became a major issue again. They let him back into the space program even with his inner ear damage, or whatever it really was, but never onto the top of the ballot. It's a mystery.
Now comes Hillary Clinton, falling down for odd reasons. In the hands of qualified name-callers and insinuators, she'll never be President. Whatever she's covering is worth that to her. Or, maybe she's sure the GOP can't attack her competently, although I have no idea where she'd get that notion.
Anyway I think Glenn's case is a more apt comparison than Ford's supposed clumsiness. In a just world, SNL would be advertising in Variety for her full-time pratfalling impersonator. Go upstairs to the network offices, and you'll find plenty already there.

might have been avoided if the government had simply bought the slaves at a fair price instead of pushing to free them without compensation."
***********
Where would the slave owners who sold their slaves to the government find replacement labor? Certainly not from Southern whites who would consider themselves as replacing negro slaves, especially if they were paid very little.
So stoop labor wages (to use the old term) would have to be high enough to attract new free laborers, white or black (mainly the latter).
That wage would necessarily have to be higher than the upkeep of wage-free slaves, and the increased costs would have to be reflected in the selling prices of the cotton and other crops bought by the mills, mostly in the UK.
If cotton from other slave-holding countries/colonies in the New World, as well as places like Egypt, was offered for less, the US plantations would lose in the world marketplace.
Southern plantations would see the offer to buy their slaves as a slow death for their businesses, wealth and influence.
From start to finish, slavery was all about economic advantage.

Durham NC, Jake. Thing is, the shitweasels in the statehouse had a chance to overturn this 1935 law with HB650, which was pretty sweeping legislation, but they chickened out and threw out the repeal of Chapter 157 along with deleting restaurant and parking lot carry. If you are packing in NC you can't take your gun in with you to any place that sells alcohol for consumption on-site (which leaves out most restaurants) and you can't have your gun even locked in your car in the parking lot anywhere it is posted. That means I can't legally drive to work armed because my place of employ is a Disarmed Victim Zone.

Shit, up here in Roanoke they just do an instant check, when it comes back clean, you walk out with your pistol. Down there, you have to have the permit to even have the gun, and if you do a private sale, you have to make sure the buyer has a permit. That fucking sucks.

Not quite, one must have either a pistol purchase permit OR a concealed weapons permit to buy a handgun. This was the primary reason for me to get my CWP, so I didn't have to ask the sheriff's permission to exercise a Constitutional right. Which is why chattel slavery would not survive the Industrial Revolution in the US. But that would have taken many years to force the issue. Many would have been content to wait if they saw it coming but it was science fiction then.
If malaria had never found its way to North America there would not have been importation of Africans. Once malaria got established in the NA mosquito population the only labor force available that had any resistance were Africans, who had been living with the problem for thousands of years.
Up until then, slavery in NA was largely Indians who'd been enslaved by other Indians and sold to colonists. The Indians had been practicing slavery for millenia with about the same geographic lines as were in place when the Civil War broke out. Southern slavery was a common thing long before any Europeans came to stay.

Same down here in Jawja. Also, no classes or certification to get a GWL (Georgia Weapons License), just fill out the paperwork at the Probate Court, pay the fee, then Johnny over to the local LEO for fingerprints. In rural counties like mine, you have your GWL in less than a week.

Y5, I was just eyeballing spam cans of 7.62x54 tonight on CtD, you never really can have enough.
My 86 Toyota Celica ST has 236k on it, burns a quart of oil a week and goes there and back. I can do any work needed on it and I'll never sell it. The 94 Thunderbird has 137k and it just got a new transmission so along with the new brakes and suspension I put in I think its good for another 60k.

Not quite, one must have either a pistol purchase permit OR a concealed weapons permit to buy a handgun. This was the primary reason for me to get my CWP, so I didn't have to ask the sheriff's permission to exercise a Constitutional right. We are working to get that particular piece of Jim Crow legislation abolished as well.

In Idaho, no NICS background check with a valid CCL.
Just fill out the federal 4473 and pay.
quickest gun purchase I've seen is 8 minutes. in and out the door
Posted by: Jake in ID at December 16, 2012 01:30 AM (jfSqj)
I looked up Wake's, and it didn't have the CWP part on it, but to have to jump through all those hoops is kind of a bitch.
When I bought mine in Virginia, I was out in about an hour, and that was without a CWP or CCL. That included the background check by the State Police.

As you wish. In North America the 1.7 was a VW engine, in Europe they came with a variety of Peugeot engines, everything else (including the special-specials) were 2.2 Chrysler engines.

Yes it is, which is why we (GRNC, if you are a North Carolinian gun owner and not a member you really should be) are working on getting rid of purchase permits. Keep in mind many of the county rules were overturned with HB650 a couple of years ago.

Toyota Sienna XLE 2004. $2300 for new AC this summer, $275 for some O2 sensor shit in November, and last week $400 for brakes. The latter was completely my fault. Some hungover SCOAMF lover hit her the morning after the election so she's been in the shop for that this week. Went to pick her up and the seat wouldn't move back up. The body shop has her until they fix that because it worked when I dropped it off.
Next set of tires, she's a trade in.

Weekly/biweekly movie/TV reviews would be kinda neat.
Mary Poppins already posts great Hollyweird stories in the morning news thread, just clip the best ones and slap 'em up. Toss in a couple of reviews from some Morons with some halfway decent writing skills and there ya go.

Oh, one thing I bought was a data reader. This is the thing that you plug in to the connector under the steering wheel when your engine (or other warning) light comes on. It tells you what is the problem. And most importantly, it turns the fucking warning light off. Costs about $35, well worth it. This is good thing to have since about two thirds of the time the warning light tells you to bring it in to the dealer so they can charge you $200 to turn the warning light off. In other words, it is all bullshit and an income generator for the dealer.

It was never meant to rival an Imperial (pre-Dynasty/AP body, of course).
Were it not aimed at giving the impression of a contemporary car (hey, that show "Hunter" would be a great showcase!), like the VW Beetle, it could have become more iconic.

last year, new struts, shocks, brakes. All new EGR and water hose rubber under the hood. New leather on the front seats and headliner. Cost $3500
You can't buy a car like this anymore for under $36000

Re: car...
Have a 2001 Chevy Silverado, 166,000+ miles. Had a few things wear out (power steering pump, rear engine seal, pulley), but she has been an absolute tank other than parts wearing out that you would expect. Driven her as far as Texas (live in WA), and multiple times to Cali & Utah. Heated seats, hauls whatever is needed. LOVE HER - the way she feels, the way she drives, everything. Would rebuild her top to bottom before selling. When something is good, wears well and you're happy why trade it for an unknown? (That's not to say I wouldn't mind also owning oh, I don't know... a Porsche Panamera, but a girl can have several cars, right?)
Might get something newer in addition if the economy was better but don't see the point of having a car payment with Zero in the White House and SMOD looming.

Once the cars interior starts going to shit and the big expenses start to kick in it's time to trade in for a new one. I got a 7500 trade in for my Hyundai Santa Fe for a Honda Fit.
The Santa Fe was in need of new tires, struts, shocks, brakes, etc. I totaled up the cost of getting all of the work done and what I could get for it in trade in as is and it really was a no brainer.

We finally traded it in on a used Jeep Cheorkee, which I am currently driving. I hated to see her go, but there was no way to keep it and the body was just terrible. I was afraid that one day I would stop and the body would just break off and keep moving forward, like a cartoon.
That Ford Explorer made 5 trips to Missouri, 3 to Florida, and one to Virginia. We hauled furniture, bushes, and even a riding lawnmower in it. I just loved it, and if I ever see a 91 Explorer with a good body I will buy it just to have it.

In 1970, I purchased a Chevelle Malibu and drove it for 36 years and 676,000 miles before finally retiring it in 2006 when I bought the GT. One engine replacement at 345,000 miles...the original 350 and a restoration in 1999. It now has classic plates on it. I do all the work myself on the cars which, in my opinion, helps.
